5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent text for the novice and experienced clinician
The text "Mobilisation of the Nervous System" is an excellent text for both the novice and experienced Physical Therapist. I bought this book to review for the Orthopedic Clinical Specialist exam, and have found it very helpful. The text does an excellent job of describing general anatomical and physiological reasoning behind commonly used evaluation and treatment techniques, as well as describing these techniques in detail. The illustrations and descriptions are good, so that if you are not practiced at these techniques you will be able to clearly see the proper postioning that is required. I would recommend this text for anyone who wants to update their clincal skills or for new Physical Therapists that want to learn more about this aspect of Physical Therapy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must buy for every massage therapist
I'm a massage therapist and used part of this book to study for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCETMB). This book is really helpful for showing you how to take a client history. This book is needed because it shows you the legalities and proper way to run a massage business. Documenation protects you in cases of audits and also is a source for assessing the client's progress and contraindications. I also studied the following for the National Certification Exam:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers (Volume 1), (Volume 2), and (Volume 3)
(Author: Patrick Leonardi)
The last 3 books helped me to prepare for the type of questions encountered on the national certification examination. I highly recommend all 4 books. I passed the first time with the help of these books

5-0 out of 5 stars obsession with documentation is now the future of massage...
Her first edition of "Hands Heal" was a collection of forms used for charting massage therapy sessions. When I saw the new book on the shelf being three times as thick as the first I thought "Oh my what more can be done with charting!" I now understand her obsession with charting. It is not just charting your sessions, but learning to communicate what you do, so the medical community and the public will begin to understand massage therapy as a healing modality. Communication starts with the therapeutic relationship with the client. Healing begins when the client becomes involved in the process. Then you can pass the information along to all parties involved - the lawyers, the doctors, whoever. If you document every treatment, you will be able to find out what is working and what is not with each individual. Documentation can assist you in builing your practice and support the massage profession as a whole. I particularly liked the section on ethics as she supports the idea of peer groups, mentoring and supervision as a means of development for the practitioner. I believe the future of the profession lies in those areas.
If you are a massage therapist in any state, this will guide you to a successful practice whether you are involved in billing insurance companies or not. ... Read more

Book Description

Childhood can be an exciting time, full of joyous exploration, new skills, friends, and imaginative play. It can also be very frightening, especially when children have experiences that threaten their feelings of safety and well-being. Even common traumatic childhood events can deeply affect children's normal healthy development, their self-esteem, and their families. Many behavioral problems stemming from common traumatic events could require years of psychotherapy or medication. That is, they did -- until the advent of EMDR. Developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR had already helped thousands of adult clients when Joan Lovett experienced its healing power firsthand.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) is a comprehensive therapeutic approach that helps patients release disturbing thoughts and emotions that originate in traumatic experiences. Experiences can be traumatic in the commonly accepted sense -- abuse, disasters, violence -- but children may also perceive and respond to more ordinary events as very threatening. A playground accident, the loss of a loved one, school problems, or choking on a piece of popcorn can be a part of growing up. They can also be critical incidents that cause a child to view him- or herself as helpless or powerless, to become fearful, and to develop debilitating behavioral problems.

In Small Wonders: Healing Childhood Trauma with EMDR, Joan Lovett, M.D., shares engaging clinical stories -- mysteries involving children who present her with puzzling and disturbing behaviors. She imaginatively focuses her knowledge of pediatrics, play therapy, and EMDR to alleviate the real-life ordeals of real-life children.

Featuring a foreword by Francine Shapiro, Small Wonders is the most comprehensive and insightful book to explore the potential of EMDR for child therapy. This enlightening book is intended for parents who are concerned with having their children feel confident, for adults who want insights into the way the events of their childhood shaped their self-image, and for professionals who want to know more about EMDR and how it can be adapted to meet the special needs of traumatized children. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend!
Easy to read and helpful for understanding the process of EMDR. I would have to agree with the previous reviewer Laura M that PEACEFUL HEART : A Woman's Journey to Healing is a must-read. Aimee Jo Martin's story clearly illustrates and details her journey with successful EMDR treatments. Quite powerful if you want to really see how effective EMDR can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful insight
What a wonderfully honest book! It shares the heartbreak of what rape does to the human soul. I also highly recommend reading Peaceful Heart: A Woman's Journey of Healing, by Aimee Jo Martin....a book that is a true testament to the human spirit.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent case history guide to EMDR with children
Dr. Lovett, the clinical detective (behavioral pediatrician) writes poignant analyses of her work with childhood traumas great and small, in which she applies the bilateral stimulation techniques of EMDR. Her writing style is easy to read, and demonstrates the relative rapidity of trauma resolution when EMDR is properly interwoven into more traditional therapy. Her book is a valuable guide for clinicians skilled in the EMDR technique, as well as informative for parents considering such treatment for their child. As an EMDR therapist who teaches workshops on treating children, I highly recommend this engaging volume. Frances Klaff Ph.D.

5-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing stories of recovery from trauma!
This is a well-written book about a pediatrician's experience with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming) as a healing tool for people suffering from the results of traumatic incidents. It would appeal to laymen as well as professionals. The intriguing stories are like little mysteries, which unravel in a hopeful way. The author experienced a serious car accident and was finally helped to overcome some puzzling symptoms with EMDR. She got training in the technique and began using it (with great success) in her practice. This book is alive with vignettes of children with problems that no one has been able to fix, but who have responded to EMDR. This compelling book would appeal to anyone interested in a short term method of overcoming limiting behaviors. ... Read more

Written by an experienced professional musician and teacher of the Alexander Technique, this volume is the first to deal specifically with the application of the Technique to music- making. Introducing the musician to the principles and procedures evolved by F. M. Alexander (1869-1955), the book contains practical advice related to all areas of musical activity, from technique, sound production, and interpretation, to daily practice, rehearsal routines, and the mitigating of stage fright and health problems. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not just for Cellists
This book is an excellent and precise treatment of the Alexander Technique. Although his examples are primarily for Cellists, Pianists, and singers, there's much that would apply to any musician. Occasionally academic, this book is well worth the patience. A moderate number of pictures are present.

3-0 out of 5 stars Stiff-necked
My teacher recommended this book as The Book To Read if I wanted to read a book about Alexander Technique as I was taking lessons. Obviously it's a book that works wonderfully for many people. I was disappointed, though. I found the book rigid and very dismissive of approaches the author didn't absolutely agree with, and obsessed with bolstering itself with citations and quotes. It almost deifies Alexander, and talks very specifically of positions etc. The impression I have of Alexander Technique from my lessons is completely different: it's about being open rather than closed to alternatives.

And yes, I had heard that Alexander lessons are infinitely better than books. I absolutely agree after reading this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Musicians Read This!
Indirect Procedures stands by itself in the world of Alexander Technique books. Written by a cellist and Alexander teacher, it is the only book I know of exclusively devoted to musicians' issues. At the same time, it is a comprehensive introduction to the principles and practice of Alexander Technique with some photo illustrations. One caveat - Indirect Procedures is not light reading and this certainly sets it apart from most self-improvement books. It is thorough and detailed and very serious.

This book addresses virtually all of the habits of muscle use that can lead muscians down the road to injuries and limited playing and performing. Beginning with my conservatory training 30 years ago, I learned that the most important part of making music was "delivering the goods." Mastering repertoire was the name of the game. If my arms hurt or my wrists ached, that was just part of being a musician. It was inevitable. Now we know it isn't. And De Alcantara's book shows musicians ways to understand movement, habit, and posture that can transform music-making from a high stress and often painful event back to the joy that it was when they began playing.

This book is particularly useful for musicians who don't have access to an Alexander teacher and would like to incorporate some of the technique into their approach to music. It is also an aid to those who are working with an Alexander teacher who is less experienced with musicians. The book is dry and detailed but absolutely invaluable if you really want to make Alexander Technique a serious part of your musical life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, well-written book on the Alexander Technique
This is an outstanding book for those who wish to gain a deeper and more finely tuned understanding of the subtleties of the Alexander Technique. It is beautifully written and engrossing. The mechanics of the Alexander Technique are well reviewed . The strength of the book, however, is the contemplative and insightful approach to the intellectual, emotional, and creative aspects of the Technique, the understanding of which is vital to its mastery. I recommend this book very highly, but not as a first book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, thorough, thought-provoking
This is not a review but a question: why is this book listed as a children's 3-page paperback? Or is there a children's book by the same name? The one I read had about 400 pages and definitely was geared for adults: very useful, very thorough, very thought-provoking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what a PT needs....not intended for lay person
I'm sorry to hear that this book was a disappointment to one of the reviewers as he or she did not feel it was appropriate to use for laypersons...but it was not intended for that. I have used this book in the clinic during one of my internships and intend on purchasing it soon. It has a lot of useful information that a PT can keep right at their finger tips. I highly recommend this book and am looking forward to having my own copy.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Primary Care people
I ordered this book sight unseen. It was disappointing for a primary care person who needs a reference to common therapies for common conditions. A lack of diagrams and explanation of physical therapy modalities that would be useful to patients is unfortunate. It covers a lot of ground but in a very cursory way. The assessment and treatment sections are sizeable lists of test and maneuvers with with no explanation of what each one is. It may well be a fine resource for a physical therapist, but I wouldn't recommend it to a primary care provider. I ended up returning the copy I ordered.
