5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had this book sooner.
I am a physiatry resident, and I find this book indispensible. It truly fits into a pocket (unlike some "pocket books"), yet pasts so much information. It is perfect for consultation rotations, since it has something useful on almost every condition. I wish I knew about is a first year resident, but even as a senior resident I learn something from it every day.

Book Description

For the first time in the West, Chinese tui na massage techniques are brought together in an easy-to-use method for whole-body health.

The Handbook of Chinese Massage integrates classic tui na (meaning push and grasp) techniques used in the Orient for centuries into a revolutionary method for health and well-being. Traditional Chinese massage practitioners use specific individual techniques to treat a wide variety of ailments--techniques demonstrated in this book. But after years of study in China, Indonesia, and Thailand, Maria Mercati has taken these separate techniques and combined them into a whole-body treatment never before seen in East or West. Tuina massage stimulates the flow of qi, vital energy, in healthy individuals as well as sick ones. It requires no special equipment and is simple enough to do at home or in a chair at work.

The Handbook of Chinese Massage includes step-by-step instructions for each of the fifteen unique tui na techniques, many of which are unfamiliar to Western massage practitioners.

More than 100 color photographs and diagrams clearly show where to place your hands on the body and where to find the key meridians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference , must buy
I am a massage therapist and found this book to be very helpful as reference for the non-western portion of the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. It had lots of information on meridians and the five element theory. It was also written quite clear and was quite easy to clear. I also used the followng which is also on amazon:
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi (Vol 1, Vol 2, Vol 3).
The last 3 books were right on target with the type of informatioin ask on this national test. All 4 books are must buys.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great techniques
I loved the different techniques in this book. It teaches the the law of the five elements and it presents detailed diagrams of the meridian channels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Starter book
Ms Mercati gives the reader a good overview of this style of massage. One problem many books on Eastern medicine concepts is that the scientific paradigm of qi, yin-yang, etc is difficult to grasp for someone who has been educated on Western scientific principles. This book starts with an introduction to the Eastern principles in a more understandable, concise fashion. This makes it good for a massage therapist who wants to expand his repertoire. At times, the anatomical descriptions are inaccurate eg: referring to the malleolus as an "ankle bone"; however, the informal style of the book keeps it interesting and readable, as well as informative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and detailed.
This is the book that got me started in pursuing my career. Maria expains every technique and concept with great detail. Outstanding diagrams and descriptions of meridians and points. Client evaluations and treatments are also included. A must for the professional Massage Therapist. ... Read more

Although packed with good information, this text was just too big to fit in a ward coat, and held too much information to be utilized effectively, unlike other books in the series. There are better quick-review resources out there for use on the wards.

2-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK
I have to say that I was extremely disappointed by this examiniation review book. Each chapter basically contains pages and pages of lists - and THAT IS ALL....if I needed a list of the rotator cuff muscles or the cranial nerves I could just as easily consult my anatomy text thank you. This review boasts 6 practice examinations, but once you have taken one of them, you have pretty much taken them all....why???...because she repeats the same questions over and over, even WITHIN THE SAME TEST!!!! This book is very poorly written and shows an overall lack of effort on the author's part. A friend who graduated a few years ago showed me his copy (a previous edition) and guess what - it included the exact same practice tests as well...looks like Ms. Meyer has been repackaging the same review book for years with no changes. Thanks for nothing....

If you want a REAL examination review, do the online review offered by the FSBPT...the same people who create the test....

5-0 out of 5 stars "the book" on exercise physiology
I am a Personal Training manager with a Physical Education undergraduate degree and Health Preservation and Rehabilitation graduate degree.
I consider that the science of exercise physiology should constitute the basic knowledge for anybody who wants to understands the way the human body functionates and acutely and chronicaly adapts to the exercise stimuli.
No matter you are(or preparing to become) a PE teacher, sport medicine specialist, personal trainer, physical therapist, athletic coach, etc, you should understand the science of exercise physiology.
Dr. McArdle's " Exercise physiology" is definetely one of the most complete books ever writen on the subject. With miriads of grafics and pictures, and tons of scientific research descriptions and results, the book is quite pleasing to read and very convincing.
With more than 1000 pages, definetelly worths its price and even more. Contains as much information as you could find in 3-4 good scientific books and much more than the complete colection of "Muscle and Fitness" starting from 1970.
You can find detailed informations together with all the book ilustrations and even 4 complete chapters at: www.connection.LWW.com/go/mcardle

5-0 out of 5 stars Filled to the Rim with Good Science
As a physical therapist/exercise trainer I'm constantly bombarded with books on exercise. This textbook addresses much of what an exercise physiologist knows with solid science, clearly written, enlivened with quiet good humor as evidenced by appealing asides. "The lungs of an average-sized person would cover a surface of 60 to 80 square meters," the authors tell us, which is what you'd expect from a textbook. Then they go on to note this area would be sufficient to cover "almost half a tennis court or an entire badminton court!" giving us not one but two vivid analogies to make the information more memorable. This largess speaks of authors who are not just able scientists, but apt teachers. This generosity extends to the wonderful illustrations (although some of them abound in a somewhat distracting rainbow of superfluous background colors). The common sense discussion of many popular fitness subjects, from exercise selection to steroids to nutrition, make it not just a classic text but good reading for any consumer reeling from the latest fitness marketing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowhow behind fitness
This book is a great help in understanding what is happening within the body conerning sports training and nutrition. It is based on uncountable research studies and presented in a very readable form with ample graphics illustrations. The book helped me not only to understand more, but also to improve fitness and even loose some weight. It goes very far beyond compared to what one gets told in fitness centers. The main approach of the book is based on energy considerations. Understanding how the body handles energy makes it possible to describe the effects of exercising and performance much more deeply. I would recommend this book to every exerciser, who likes to improve physically and understand background matters. Basically, it's a textbook for sports students. But people outside, like myself, can greatly benefit from it, as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars NBAF 'very best' - must have
If you only own 1 book it should be this one (excellent reference for 'Flame Wars'). A good physiology book is a must if you wish to be 'educated' on exercise and nutrition. Understanding how and why the human body works is very important if you plan to train others or be your best. If you buy 1000 bodybuilding, fitness and health newsstand magazines they will still not contain the information you will find in one good human physiology book, and this is one of the very best. If you want to be able to hold intelligent conversations on the internet than you should have several books on physiology - I can't stress this enough. Learn about the food we eat and what happens to it after it's eaten. Learn all the reactions in the body, when and why they take place and how they effect your training, learn what makes muscle grow. If you want real facts get any good physiology book. Knowledge is power - learn the truth - you will find the real secrets in a good physiology book. In general these books are expensive, but worth it. You might also check for used copies at college bookstores, medical institutions or used book sales. NBAF 'very best'. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best
When I tell people that I'm a massage student, the predictable response is: "Think of me if you need anyone to practice on...". As I observe my desk piled high with books and search my schedule in vain for a free hour to massage my husband, this seems like the dumbest/most insensitive thing anyone could possibly say to me.
The Educated Heart deals with issues such as these: of boundaries as a massage student and how to approach people that are reluctant to pay the full price for massage therapy. In fact, this easy-to-read book is packed with insights and simple explanations of complex concepts (e.g. dual relationships, projection). If I had just one book in my massage collection, it would be this. I recommend it be required reading in every massage school.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent business advice
Despite the fact that she's my sister, Nina has a firm grasp of the theoretical issues, years of practical experience, and the ability to understand and relate to the problems of the individual practioner. She addresses real issues that affect business success in a extremely readable format. This book provides body work professionals with a much needed business counselor.

5-0 out of 5 stars at last, ethical guidelines to body work
At last, a professional wrote ethical guidelines for bodyworkers. Her sense of humor, candid stories and writing style add to the author's invaluable advise to practioners who "touch" many, many people everyday. Thank you, Nina!

4-0 out of 5 stars Sifu Lam has done it again
After reading Sifu (Master or Teacher) Lam's earlier work "The Way of Energy" I bought this book because it deals more with the healing aspect of Qigong (chi kung).

I happen to have an intense interest in natural forms of healing.

I have two complaints against this book

1. Sifu Lam neglects to include an illustration of where the meridians (energy pathways) occur on the body. "The Way of Energy" also neglects this information.

2. On page 109 Sifu Lam implies that Qigong (chi kung) exercizes will improve visual acuity. This is true providing that the visual deteioration is caused by lack of blood flow to the eyes. However deformity of the lens in problems like astygmatism will not be helped.

After studying the exercize regimen in this book, I noticed that this book only includes the first five Zhan Zhaung (Jan Jong) poses listed in the earlier book "The Way of Energy", and the fact that he has changed the name for some of the poses.

On page 150 Sifu Lam cautions readers to pay attention to the subtle signals their body sends to them. I agree with this 100%!

Overall: this book is a very good place to start, but IMHO "The Way of Energy" is the better book.

If I may be of assistance feel free to E-Mail me.

4-0 out of 5 stars a useful and clear book
As a big fan of master Chuen's previous book, The Way of Energy, I eagerly sought out this book when I learned it was available. It is a very useful companion book to his earlier one, and it stands well on its own, too. It is a bit simpler in style and information, but contains additional useful practices and other interesting tidbits. It seems geared toward a reading audience that would be more interested in a less intense chi kung regime than that in The Way of Energy. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I should have taken it easy with the hype
All of the 5 star reviews of this book made me expect more than I should have, and I was bound for disappointment. First of all, this book has got some big dimensions, so, uh, well I wasn't expecting the pages to be so large and atlas like. I didn't get very much from this book, and the problem might be that I am healthy. I do wear glasses though, so I am currently trying to fix me peepers to a flatter lense. There isn't very much when it comes to the eye exercises though, so let me just give a summary so you can get started right away:
-try to relax your eyes, forehead, jaw, neck, etc. as often as possible (you will notice an improvement after a few days of relieving the constant unconscious squeezing)
-exercise your eyes by alternating viewing bright objects (the sun with CLOSED eyelids) and darkness (palming, where you cover your eyes with your palms and blocking out all light)
-palming. I don't know how, but it works. I cover my eyes with my palms for about 10 minutes a day and my vision has improved slightly in just a few days. Might be related to reiki. I also seen palming recommended in a book instructing how to gain scrying vision.
That's what I have used from the eye fixing chapter, the only other thing that seems of use for healthy people is the beginning chapter on improving your breathing capacity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and definitive: you can create your own miracle
Meir Schneider has truly walked the walk. I have been involved in the alternative healing field for over 18 years and this book is all you need to begin your journey of healing yourself. Working with visualization, exercises, breathing, everything about your life and your habits is addressed in this book. If you are seriously ill or someone you love is, go get this book and start working right away. You will get better. This book is empowering, but if you don't want to spend the time and do the work, you won't use it. This is for those who are eager and ready to take charge of their health and their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Handbook of Self Healing
An essential reference for those who take full responsibility for their health, fitness, and well-being. Detailed discussions cover all the major body systems-skeletal, muscular, nerves, circulatory,etc.- and many debilitating diseases - osteoporosis, diabetes, among others. The suggestions and exercises are thoroughly explained and illustrated. An empowering work. This book would be a wonderful gift for anyone interested in maintaining and improving their health.

5-0 out of 5 stars You don't need to wear eyeglasses!
Once in a while, I find a book so unique and so valuable that I tell all my friends and family about it. THE HANDBOOK OF SELF-HEALING is such a book, since it is valuable for everyone wishing to either prevent health problems or regain good health.

Author Meir Schneider cured himself of congenital blindness as a teenager, and discovered many ways to optimize the body's strength, flexibility and sensitivity. He now has a California driver's license, and tells people that they don't need to wear eyeglasses! This book is full of Schneider's wonderful suggestions for improving whole-body health (not just the eyes) through exercises, visualization, meditation, breathing, and stretching (among other things).

This book contains separate sections which provide a wealth of information for people suffering from work, music, computer, or sports-related pains and injuries -- as well as heart problems, headaches, arthritis, back pain, muscular dystrophy, diabetes mellitus, posture problems, polio, multiple sclerosis, and vision problems.

I highly recommend this book for anyone wishing to learn how to help their body be the best it can be!

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book MUST be in your library in rehabilitation medicine
I can not imagine a more thorough book on rehabilitation regardless of the supposed handicapping condition. Meir has seen and helped and trained others to assist those who appear to be hopelessly handicapped to participate fully in life once again. Having conquered severe blindness (he has an up to date legal drivers permit) to the utter amazement still of all those who examine his eyes and read his history, he went on to learn to educate others about achieving their own individual awareness of their healing path. Any serious student of rehabilitation and those with handicapping conditions cannot afford to miss this book. It will change their lives forever! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Misleading answers???
When taking the exams on the CD some of the answers are marked incorrectly. Then the explanation shows that you chose correctly though it is marked as INCORRECT and some of the incorrect answers are therefor also marked CORRECT but the explanation points to the other answer that is marked INCORRECT though actually right.

Poor review by the proofreaders and author makes this CD a poor choice. The book is better than the CD and can be helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for the practicing physician and student
Pretty good book though I was surprised about the author's comment about the late, great osteopath Larry Jones who actually developed positional release through strain/counterstrain.I remember Larry as being a friendly, helpful chap who was much more flexible regarding his techniques rather than the rigid clinician that the author describes. Regardless, the British Osteopath Chaitow goes into details of the various positional release techniques such as strain/counterstrain, functional release etc. which helps clarifies all the terminology. Chaitow also has a video which is a good acompaniment to the book. Kind of wish I had this for the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's THE book !
On a very complete way, once more, Chaitow shows on Positional Release Techiniques important ways to restablish functional state of different structure, such as muscle spasm, enhacing circulation and more. A very fine book that will be usefull for many manual trehapists. If you have any doubt, don't wait more, acquire it ! ... Read more
