Book Description

Fracture management is fundamental to Orthopaedic practice. This book's easy-to-use format helps diagnose, classify, and most importantly, manage the fractures and ligamentous injuries most likely to be seen in clinical practice. Organized by anatomic region, the text enables the user to form a diagnosis based on physical and radiographic findings, then focuses on the basic principles of fracture management using an array of superb line drawings and X-rays. Chapters cover the anatomy surrounding the fracture, various possible mechanisms of injury, classification of fractures, clinical evaluation, indications and treatment (operative and non-operative), results, late complications, and summary/reflections. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for PGY-1's and 2's in orthopaedics, ER residents
For the busy orthopaedic surgery and ER residents, this pocket "text" provides pertinent information regarding common fractures with focus on surgical options and relevant anatomy. Though not as detailed as other texts (i.e. Skeletal Trauma by Browner et al., and Hoppenfeld's Surgical Exposures...), the handbook comes close to providing the necessary information for appropriate evaluation and treatment of the patient with an orthopaedic injury. The second edition is a significant improvement over the first and would highly recommend this even for non-surgical physicians in private practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars great resource
This is a good book for everyday use. The format is brief yet helpful. It is a good book for residents, physician assistants and students in the early stages. I use it also to refresh my memory when I encounter something I have not seen in awhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handbook of Fractures
Excellent text! I reviewed a friends copy and had to have one for myself. The text is well organized into the various musculoskeletal regions with thorough explinations of common and not so common injuries, including the recommended treatment. The illustrations are easily understood and add a great deal to the effectivness of this book. It is designed to fit into a lab coat pocket, and will make a handy reference. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good book for basic student knowledge
This is an excellent text for PT students or for the PT with no acute orthopedic experience. It provides basic and fundamental information. I do not recommend it for the therapist with experience; it is too elementary.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for students, fair for clinicians
This text may be of benefit to the student physical therapist, when he/she is familiarizing himself with general ortho protocols. However, generally this information is clearly outlined by the referring orthopedic surgeon. I do not recommend this book to experienced clinicians, as the information is very remedial. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not too good...
I found many inconsistencies plus questions from this book are not like the licensure questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled potential
This book has the right idea-practice questions. It is stuffed full of questions which is great practice; however, it has no other asset. It does provide test answers, but not explanations. There is a HEAVY emphasis on PNF, Brunnstrom, terminology and Medical Science. Also, I found at least 1 question that was repeated twice in the same chapter.

1-0 out of 5 stars Preparing for the Physical Therapist Licensure Exam
I did not think this book was very helpful. The sample test are nothing like the actual exam. I feel this is misleading. I also noted conflicting information throughout the book. However, the questions on the disk were more accurate. I would not recommend this book to anyone!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Preparing for the PT licensure exam
I recently took the PT exam and found that this book did not help me one bit. Not one question on the exam was similar to any of the questions found in this book. The disk did not work on my computer. I found several discrepancies and wrong answers. Totally worthless book and waste of money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Preparing for the Physical Therapy Licensure Exam
While this book did help direct my thinking in studying for the board exam, I found there were many questions that had mistakes and the answers provided inaccurate information. I also was unable to download the sample tests on the enclosed disc, maybe because my computer operates with Windows 98. It was frusterating not to have the practice. ... Read more

Book Description

Destined to become a classic text and reference, Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery shows you how to use imaging techniques to improve posture and alignment and release excess tension. The book’s 195 illustrations will help you visualize the images and exercises and show you how to use them in a variety of contexts.

Part I of Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery discusses the origins and uses of imagery and includes 36 exercises that demonstrate dynamic alignment in practice. You’ll explore the importance of posture and dynamic alignment and discover how to use imagery to affect body movement.

Part II explains the biomechanical and anatomical principles behind complex imagery and illustrates 52 exercises to bring these principles to life. You’ll learn how to use basic physics to create a strong yet fluid balance in your muscles and joints.

Part III provides 250 anatomical imagery exercises to help you fine-tune alignments and increase body awareness. The exercises focus on different regions of the body--the pelvis, hips, knees, lower legs, spine, shoulders, arms, hands, head, and neck--as well as on breathing. You can select specific images to address individual needs or follow the sequence presented in the book.

And Part IV provides 23 holistic exercises to sculpt and improve alignment in various positions--standing, supine, and sitting. These exercises will help you establish a body image that facilitates dynamic alignment and releases excess tension.

By practicing the techniques described in Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery, you’ll tap into the power of imagery and create better movement. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Deal With Gravity
Gravity is the most influencial force in our lives. Eric Franklin's Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery deals how to move in the gravity field.

I am not a professial dancer. But I am approaching walking the 4.0 minute mile using body images in Franklin's book as a guide for good alignment. This imagery that moves your body parts better keeps your interest. It is fun. Right now I am working on hip motions images.

How much do I like it? I bought five copies to give to my children so they could share good alignment with my grandchildren. So, they all will know how to deal with and make peace with gravity. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not very practical
Everyone seems to buy this book as a reflex, but I hardly have used it in the last year I've had it as a PMR resident. It can be helpful sometimes when preparing a brief topical discussion, but it is not specific enough in terms of what should be done clinically. It's so big it's difficult to take it anywhere with you if you need to study for the boards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clinician's Critique: Acute Care Handbook for P. T.
Congratulations to the authors of this valuable reference text! The Acute Care Handbook is, first of all, anything but a "handbook" in the traditional sense. It is lengthy and detailed, qualities which would make a more leisure-oriented read a sure bet for the bedside table. But, this useful book is not for dozing through. Rather, it makes for much easier quick searches or in-depth reviews of most topics critical to effective acute care physical therapists.

Two brief observations that might strengthen the utility of this reference book: First, a chapter on "Trauma or Multi-Trauma Patients" would be beneficial. Also, increased use of illustrations would enhance the book's impact.

Overall, though, this text has been a wonderful addition to my reference library. If you are an acute care therapist now, going to be one soon, or just need to "brush up" on this phase of rehabilitation, this book will definitely meet your reference needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Standard of the Profession
The Mercy Center Guidelines reflect the highest standard of care in the chiropractic profession.

1-0 out of 5 stars OUTDATED AND CONSENSUS ONLY
This is merely a consensus of a limited number of people, many of whom do not practice and others with apparent private agendas. One of the supposed contributors was deceased long before it was even published. Makes me wonder how they even published it.... Pretty much a waste of time and paper.

1-0 out of 5 stars This text misrepresents its worth, full of legal holes.
This small group of 'experts' on chiropractic completely misrepresented the facts involved. They set out with an obvious purpose and this book is their attempt at a professiopnal takeover. A new guidelines book has recently been published and has been approved by the National Guideline Clearinghouse (a branch of US gov't). If this subject interests you, get the other one and save yourself some money.

4-0 out of 5 stars The largest consent of proceedures with the Profession.
A group of well respected Chiropractors got together to determine which techniques and proceedures are accepted and which are not. It is gives general guildelines for treatment protocols. Read by most Chiropractors, used (or abused) by many insurance companies. Not very interesting for those not in the field. I wish the medical specialties would have the same. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth and informative course
This book has been very informative and I have gained a deeper knowledge of trigger point therapy. I would recommend this book and would like to purchase the video that accompanies this text.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb 'Hands-On' Manual
It is with great pleasure that I write this review and strongly recommend this 'new-approach' book to any PT, OT, Chiro, MD or Massage Therapist.
Not only does it have a great amount of theoretical detail, but VERY EASY and effective cinical applications . This is esp. helpful in a medical system that is surely not getting easier! This book offers great help in that it is a 'Hands-On-In-The-Cinic' Manual that IS USED, believe me!

Keep this up Dr. Kostopoulos and Rizopoulos. You have set the bar a notch higher with your effort.
Can't wait for the next book!

A Satisfied PT-customer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb 'Hands-On Manual'!
I gladly submit a review of this great book. I strongly recommend it to any Manual Therapist (OT/PT/Massage Therapists/MD's/Chiro's et al), for it has such a practical 'Hands-On' approach.

It is substantiated by more than enough clinical information, research details and moreover TONS OF CLINICAL APPLICATIONS.

I am totally Gung-Ho about this new approach, which fits perfectly into a somewhat challenging medical system.

Congrats Dr. Kostopoulos and Rizopoulos!
Well Done ....when is the follow-up due .... give us more!

Best Wishes
Another Satisfied PT client.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Info, Very Easy to Follow!
This is an excellent book, both for the beginning myofascial therapist as well as the seasoned practitioner. The book begins with several chapters of foundational information including historical basis for trigger point therapy, review of the physiology of muscle contraction, description of trigger point formation, myofascial diagnosis and myofascial treatment.
The second section of the book deals with the evaluation and treatment of individual muscles and is divided into body segments (cervical spine, upper extremity, lower extremity, jaw, etc.). Each muscle has two full pages of information including referred pain patterns, most likely location of trigger points, stretch technique, and biomechanics of injury. The manual features numerous full color photographs both in the theoretical section and especially in the treatment section which serve to clarify the written material.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have worked with trigger point therapy for over 8 years, and still found many new and helpful things in the manual. The concepts contained in the book are based on the most current research and writings, including those of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons. The authors have also elaborated on their own contributions to the field of myofascial therapy, including use of biomechanics of injury as a diagnostic aid, assessment for positive stretch sign, and an integrated treatment model.
The text contains very technical material, yet is very easy to read without being oversimplified. Review questions are included at the end of every chapter.
If you are a new therapist just starting to learn about myofascial pain, or an experienced clinician looking for clarification or new ideas, I give The Manual of Trigger Point and Myofascial Therapy my highest recommendation.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best clinical books I have ever read!!!
This is one of the best books I have read in Trigger Point Therapy. It includes color illustrations and pictures for each technique described. I would recommend this book for everyone interested to learn or learn more about myofascial dysfunction. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Cervical Text
This book offers great explanations and anatomical illustrations related to cervical dysfunction. Photos of dissections are accompanied by clearly marked drawings that make this text a very thorough musculoskeletal review of the neck. I found the text to be easy to follow. The functional assessment section is lengthy and thorough, though the differential diagnosis section is quite brief. Treatment of neck disorders is also not thoroughly explored. The addition of cervical segmental stability principles and techniques would make this book invaluable. As it is, it is a good addition to a physiotherapist's library. ... Read more
