A must for professionals in disability law and medicine
The 5th Edition is the Rosetta Stone for evaluating permanent impairment. It is invaluable in workers' compensation, where many states, provinces and several countries either mandate its use or treat this work as an authorativie source of impairment evaluation. It may also come to have utility in ADA cases, especially with its emphasis on activities of daily living, and as a predicate to demonstrating the significance or insignificance of an impairment's effect on major life activities after Toyota vs Williams. The vision chapter represents the AMA's first major, published revision to the science and knowledge of eye impairments since the early 1900's.

Nice Charts
Although my copy came with 10 pages of errata sheets stuck in the front of it (presumably cured in the 5th version), I still got a lot out of reading through this book. The descriptions of impairment are de regeur reading for coming up with convincing settlement demands for soft tissue injuries. Someone's shoulder hurts? How do you say they have lost 20% of their upper body use as a result? Why not 90% of one finger, 50% of one hand, and 80% of one arm? Multiple impairments like these can be descriptively segmented to more fully elaborate what a patient is feeling, and how they are limited in daily activities. Best I've Seen
Rapid Interpretation of EKG's is the best book on the subject that I've seen. Dale Dubin starts from the very basics and moves onto understanding the important aspects of EKG interpretation. It doesn't surprise me why this book is a pre-requisite to many ACLS courses and why it is recommended reading in countless other books and courses.

The text is in a fill in the blanks type format and doesn't cram too much information together. The important topics are covered: Arrhythmias, Blocks, Infarction, Axis, the Autonomic Nervous System, and EKG tracings are some of the chapters included. The pace is slow and steady but not to the point where it sacrifices quality. It takes a little while to get used to but it solid nevertheless. The pictures used are simple as well. There is a lot of content in this book and would make a great tool for those getting into the field of EKG's.

I was surprised as to the quality of the actual book. The pages are of better quality than the average medical textbook. This book is a great buy and worth the money.

Awesome!
This book is excellent. It got me through paramedic class, without it I was lost. You won't be disappointed. For $15.00 this is one of the best investments you could make.

Wonderful book for med students or anyone who needs to learn
This is a wonderful book for nursing or medical students, or anyone who needs to learn EKGs/ECGs. I'm a physician and read EKGs every day and I've never seen another text that was able to teach me the necessary concepts so painlessly. Yes, it *IS* written as if the reader is a third grader and I'm sure that offends some people who have spent their life in school or who want to make people believe that EKG reading is some magical art. Personally I enjoy being taken by the hand and shown everything like it was the first time I'd seen it. I think the teaching method presented here is quit effective for the average Joe or Josephine. Reading EKGs is not magic and this book shows you that anyone *can* really do it. I would strongly encourage anyone who has had trouble grasping the concept of EKGs to pick this book up, and that includes physicians, nurses, students, EMTs, medical technicians, respiratory therapists, heck, ANYONE who wants to learn to read EKGs! Still a must have for primary providers
I previously lauded the 3rd edition. Now I am extremely impressed by the latest edition. There are more pictures and elaborate details about diagnosis and treatment. But what I consider the best improvement are the expanded tables in each chapter. These tables detail recommended evaluations, treatments and differential diagnosis.
THE BEST GOT BETTER

Detailed yet practical
I have used this book both for Dermatology class, in my dermatology rotation and in other rotations. It is a great resourse to just look up information. It has great pictures and is easy to sit and read and understand.

I can say I have definately gotten my money out of this book.

A must have for the primary care provider...
...for it is easy to use, written very clearly and it has wonderful pictures.
From the moment it was recommeded to me as a student to now, I have used it just about everyday.
Just as an example, Habif has a wonderful chapter on Acne that allows the primary care provider to manage this condition from its mildest to the more complicated forms. He describes the condition and the treatment options giving us a great resource for care.

Simply the best
This book receives a rating of five stars. It is clearly written, easy to understand, comprehensive, and contains practical information accompanied by hundreds of clear color photographs. This book is very helpful to me in my practice and I refer to it often. It really is a standard of excellence. I can't recommend the book more highly.

Mandatory for all survivalists
This book MUST be in a survivalist library! It is the authoritive guide to identifying, diagnosing and treating human illness. You'll find nearly all the collected current knowledge of modern medicine within these pages.

Along with the Bible, this book is the single most important literary resource you can own. The Merck Manual is broken up into sections categorized along types of afflictions and causes, followed by appropriate treatments. Sometimes the language is clinical and can be difficult to follow without an understanding of the terms but most laymen can grasp enough to administer correct emergency medical care when necessary.

The Merck manual also proves useful when confronting your doctor about your condition or that of a loved one, it enables you to understand the diagnosis and treatment sufficiently to determine if there may be a mistake or a possible side-effect your doctor might not be willing to admit to.

I also recommend "Where there is no Doctor" and "Where there is no Dentist" to accompany this great book.

The Bible of Medicine
Dubbed the Bible of Medicine, the Merck manual is a book condensed enough to cover all the major aspects of of medicine in a text written that even though is targeted towards health care practitioners, can also be used by that layman. Written first at the end of the 19th century, the manual covers nearly most of everything in the medical field. From why epilepsy occurs to that dreadful itchy rash, the topics are concise, up to the point and easy to understand. Even though a home edition exists, the black book can be used by educated people to know anything they would like to know, with the exception of surgery.

The book is divided into an alphabetical scheme, where all the topics are featured in that order. However that can be confusing as such since the subtopics are not arranged that way. Case in point, if you wanted to search for Candidiasis of the skin, you should not search under C, but S for skin disorders and then follow things through. This can be confusing at first, but then again, this is not an encyclopedia or dictionary of medical terms. The great thing about the book is the way everything is covered in the basic schema of background, signs and symptoms and then therapy. This helps people understand the topic in the right sense and actually makes it stick to your mind for a long time. The book is also good enough to mention the doses of the drugs used to treat an ailment.

No medical clinician should be out there practicing without the Merck Manual on his desk. This is a quick reference that is essential in the day of evidence based medicine and where the patient is educated enough to be a part of his or her treatment plan and not just the silent recepient. The book can be found in the hard copy format and is available for the PALM, which makes it the best reference carried in a doctor's pocket.

Here's what I think...
A great medical reference book that has been around forever. Probably more for medical professionals than the lay person though. Also recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" if you have back pain from lifting patients around all day like I do.

The best compact summary of internal medicine
It's amazing to me that a book like this could still be current. In many ways the Merck Manual is a relic from another age, when doctors had to fit their entire medical libraries and equipment in a stagecoach and specialists were unheard of outside the largest cities.

It remains a wonderful travel reference for the physician, great vacation reading for the medical student, and an affordable way for the educated layman to pursue a personal interest in medicine.

A layman who wants to tackle the Merck Manual in its entirety will need a good college science background and a medical dictionary. While this book is very well written, it is quite dense and often assumes a basic knowledge of the medical sciences.

The Merck manual is probably the only serious medical textbook that is affordable for the general reader. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in medicine--those considering medical school will probably find it especially valuable.

Why do so few people own and use this book?
This book has been a classic and a mirror on medical knowledge
since its first publication in 1899. By studying the various
editions of the very many years it has been in existance, you obtain a look into the past and evolution of human knowledge.
The publication is regularly issued and is now it its 17th edition.

As the very many other reviews have stated it is an incomparable work for its small overall dimensions containing over 2832 pages in an easy to carry design and format. The paper is of high quality, very thin and long lasting capable of withstanding much abuse.

The breadth of the subject matter contained therein is beyond the reach of most other medical books except perhaps the excellent medical text entitled "Wilderness Medicine" authored by Auerbach. However the extremely well done full size Auerbach publication is not something you would carry while the Merck Manual is just for that type of instant reference, easy carry availability.
While the Merck Manual is not and does not pretend to discuss surgery in any depth nor teach any surgical procedures it certainly indicates when surgery is a treatment and does discuss various surgical therapy. An example is Hydrocephalus where within a short space accurate and useful discussion is imparted as to etiology and surgical remedies.
This book also contains excellent chapters on Pharmacodynamics and Clinical Pharmacology. This is unusual in a general medical text. There are very few medical conditions not addressed in this publication.
I do not understand why in the United States the Merck Manual is not found on the desk of most physicians. Perhaps its extraordinary overall scope is not as useful as more targeted texts to the specialty practiced. Certainly specialized publications, which Merck is not, are the method to conduct in depth research but to have in such a simple one volume format a fully comprehensive general medical text is a pleasure to possess and use.
Every medical practitioner should own one. For those who love well done books, it makes wonderful recreational reading as does the Auerbach Wilderness Medicine. Another book to keep nearby is DeGowin and Degowin's "Bedside Diagnostic Examination" which easily fits in a coat pocket.... ... Read more

What you need to understand surgery in a concise way
Surgery, like everything in medicine, has a language of it's own. And when you, as a medical student, get to the surgical wards, you'll need a book to understand what is going on around you. Written in a pleasant way, it is divided in three practical sections: Surgery's general principles, general surgery and surgical specialities, just like in med school.
They give you a refreshment on basic sciences concepts critical for understanding surgical pathologies and then they tell you essentials of diagnosis and treatment of such pathologies.
Therefore, I recommend the book for medical students and General Practitioners who will need to answer the "Should I call the surgeon ? "question. Not very good descriptions on surgical procedures, and I would like it to have better illustrations, but I think it's worth the money.

Pleasant Reading!
This book provides a great review in all subjects of surgery in a concise way. The reading is easy and pleasant. Although, the last edition is from 1994, it's been still up-to-date. Great purchase!

A Must Have
A well written and edited book. Contains material that is quite focussed and essential, specially for those preparing for examinations. Although written more than seven years back it contains facts that some of the very popular books mentioned only lately in their recent editions.

That it is not coming out with another edition is a serious drawback. For this reason it is fast loosing the edge it has over other books.

Other shortcoming is lack of colored illustrations and photographs.

Not a textbook of surgery
I think this book might be helpful for those people who are looking for a book that gives you the surgical point of view of the disease, it doesn't focus exclusively on the surgical procedures and treatment, but it takes its time to explain a little more about the pathophysiology, symptoms and signs etc., of the illness,it's more like a book to start with.

Children won't seem a problem with this book
Everyone recommended big fat books of pediatrics, with lots of words and little answers. But this book is all you want and need to know about in your pediatrics rotations. With diagnostic essentials, getting through diseases just gets a lot easier, and with therapeutical answers, it just builds good doctors. I specially liked the chapter on antimicrobials and vaccines, so essential in pediatric care. Definitely a must have for a good medical student with lot to learn and too little time (at the end, that's what medicine is all about). All my medschool classmates just wanted to have my book.

Excellent book for chiropractic students
I used this book along with Mosby's Physical Examination book and easily passed my Physical Diagnosis class in chiropractic college. These two book also served as excellent references for Parts II, III and IV of the national chiropractic boards. I also found Dr. Leonardi's National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers, to be an excellent source for the boards. I also found Leonardi's Part III Study Guide and Part IV study guides to be right on the mark. These books helped me with passing the boards. Bates Book is needed as a great building block for learning Physical Examination--Heart, head and Neck, Chest and lungs, abdomen etc.

Good, but maybe you'll want better.
This is an excellent and thorough text on the physical exam. The only problem is that its based on "the way things have always been done" instead of emerging controlled trials evaluating H+P techniques objectively. You might consider purchasing one of the new evidence-based medicine physical exam texts that are beginning to pop up (Ask your docs about recommendations). Preview them first, because not all of them teach the actual techniques or present the differential diagnosis of findings as well as Bates. They do, however, actually include numbers (percentages, Likelihood ratios, etc) to tell you how sensitive and specific (read how useful) these methods really are. These numbers will be critical to you later in evidence-based practice (which is not what all physicians now practice) in order to determine the pre- and post-test (lab, X-ray, etc.) probabilities of your differential diagnoses.
Buying an evidence-based text now would save you from having to buy both like I did.

Still looking for a good physical exam book
This book was written for no one in mind. It reads as a single run-on sentence from page one to the end. You cannot learn physical exam from it (or from any other book -- you simply have to practice) and Bates is a rather mediocre reference if you need to find out how to examine this or that.

Physical exam is a dying art and I'm yet to find a semi-decent modern text on the subject.

Excellent Physical Examination textbook.
I am a first year medical student and use this book in our physical diagnosis course. I found this book easy to read with good illustrations. Diagrams were useful in understanding the text. I found the heart sounds CD to be extremely useful in understanding the cardiac cycle and how it relates to heart murmurs. I haven't seen other physical diagnosis textbooks but I can say that this one is very user friendly.

Errors, errors, and more errors!
This book at one time was good I am told, but the 8th edition (2002) is now outdated with many errors. The CD on heart sounds which is included is insulting to medical students. The book has terrible photographs which make the patients look jaundiced or cyanotic. I am sorry I bought it. There is no question that Swartz's book on physical diagnosis is the best. Swartz has a great free CD on the complete physical exam which is included with the book. ... Read more

A masterpiece of medical anthropology

The Spirit Catches You is a must read for anyone whose work involves contact with people from a very different little understood culture. This is a tale of what happened to a beautiful Hmong child when fear and misunderstanding between her parents and the medical community of Merced resulted in a tragic, and very likely avoidable, outcome.

A Heartbreaking Tale of Cultural Clashes
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman is a wonderful book that explores the complex subject of cultural competence in the U.S. health care system. It raises awareness for the urgent need of health care providers who have knowledge about other cultures (specifically non-Western cultures) and are also willing to adapt to the cultural traditions and beliefs of their patients.

This narrative tells us the story of Lia Lee, an epileptic child born to a Hmong family who immigrated to the U.S. After a series of unfortunate events that stemmed from cultural clashes between the hospital and the Lee family, Lia eventually ended up brain dead in a comatose state. The lack of communication between the doctors and the Lee family, in addition to their inability to understand each other, linguistically and culturally, made cooperation impossible, and eventually ended up with devastating results.

From the beginning, Nao Kao and Foua Lee (Lia's father and mother) had difficulties with adapting to the ways of the Western medical system. Lia was the first child that was born in the United States. She was also the first to be born in a hospital, as traditionally Hmong women gave birth at home without the assistance of medicine. As a result, Foua was unaccustomed to the all of the events that occur in a hospital when a baby is born. For instance, once Lia was out of the womb, she was whisked away by the nurses and given all kinds of medical tests to determine if she was healthy or not. Being that this was Foua's fourteenth child, Foua was used to having the baby in her arms immediately after birth and caring for her from then on. Having this abrupt separation between mother and child was not normal to her.

Also, there is a Hmong cultural tradition that women follow soon after birth. The act of burying the placenta has cultural significance that is related to one's soul and life after death. Foua, however, did not get to bury Lia's placenta; it was incinerated at the hospital. Not that she would have been able to even ask anyone about it because there was no one present during her delivery who spoke Hmong. Thus, this was another traditional Hmong practice that conflicted with the practices of Western medicine.

As the story progresses, you see the endless struggle that plays out between the Lees and the doctors at the hospital. One only wishes that the providers would be more sensitive to the beliefs and traditions of the Hmong culture. Sadly, this never comes to fruition as the story ends up in tragedy.

The book goes into great detail about the Hmong culture and the history of the Hmong people. Sometimes, however, this seems to distract the reader from the main story of Lia. Although this information is placed in the book to provide the reader with a better understanding of the Hmong, it seems a bit too much at times. However, overall this book was quite an engrossing read. The story pulls you in and makes you become a part of the Lee family's ordeal with the Western medical system. This is a highly recommended book for anyone, especially those who are interested in cross-cultural interactions between doctors and patients.

I liken this to the literary world
Fadiman in a journalistic style of writing captures how different belief systems class in the world of the hmong and American medicine. What strikes me about this book is that it is translatable to the literary world. Madness is a much talked about subject in the genius of writing, but madness is run from by the Literati. The world is different now. As Alexandra Johson and others stated on memoir back in the late 90's, writing is more about having a writer with an agent, that is once was where a writer had a therapist. To wit: madness is perceived as an illness, when it used to be perceived by the writing world as a gift to the creation of art. Now in the writing world where agent matters, you get books like punctuation in Shoots and Leaves rather than about being and what it is like to BE in this day and age. And what's also true about this book and the American Medicine is that the doctor's like the literati are well meaning.

The need for empathy
As a student looking to go to medical school, I found this book to be an eye opening experience. It really points out the need for empathy for other cultures, languages and religions in the medical establishment. Although I know I am more open minded than most pre-med students, I think that anyone who reads this book can develop an appreciation for culture and religion as it relates to health and healing. It is a great read and I recommend it for all pre-med students.

Sometimes Prejudice Isn't Evil, Only Ignorant
I may be too optimistic, but I've grown to believe that bigotry isn't always practiced by bad people, but often by good people ignorant of cultures other than their own. This was certainly the situation in the case that Anne Fadiman writes about. People from two cultures, each believing they are correct, clash and a small child gets caught in the middle.

Prejudice begins to break down in the light of true communication. Unfortunately for this child, true communcation was too big of a hurdle to cross. Fortunately for the reader, we can learn from reading about this experience.

The most artfully illustrated book on cytology of the 90's
Dr. Demay's book is a superbly well illustrated work on cytopathology and this alone would classify it as a worthwhile buy. But Dr. Demay goes beyond and presents to the reader an excellent text, skillfully intertwined with comprehensive and carefully prepared pictures, discussing cytopathology in an accessible and very insightful manner most of time. This book is a basic addition for a cytopathologists' library.

A good text for allied health and nursing students.
This is an excellent introduction to health care ethics. Covers theory and principles and ethical decision-making in the first several chapters and the major issues in health care in the remaining chapters. The writers don't bog down in discussing these issues as do some current texts in bioethics. Very readable. Does not have cases so if one uses this for instruction a book with a collection of cases is needed (i.e. Cases Studies in Allied Health Ethics by Veatch and Flack). ... Read more

This is the best I've seen
I'm a medical student whose school uses Bates' guide... I must say that this book FAR surpasses Bates. Not only is the information complete, but the pictures and "jewels" it presents are wonderful. This is also better than the Schwartz (which I own also). If I could choose all over which book to buy of the three, I would DEFINITELY buy this one.

Excellent book, superior picture and graphic, good explanations, If you want to buy an excellent book of semiology...here it is. The CD bring usefull information, and friendly interface for students. A recomendation for the Authors could be insert video of each maneuver and sign, as well as clinical interviews of each capital syndrome.

Very good information for those willing to dig
These books contain a great deal of advanced spiritual information. The Berg's state that it is information that can stand alone, but since it is a detailed explanation of the deeper meanings of God's law, it is really necessary to have a background in that law. It would be wise to read the five books of the Torah first, although they have notes in the text referring to the appropriate texts of the law the Zohar section is discussing.

Most Christians will take exception to much of what the Zohar has to teach, but that is because of their own misunderstanding of the law and the ultimate sacrifice it required. Once there is an adequate background in the law and its spiritual meaning (Romans 7:14), the Zohar will begin to take on a great deal of meaning for the Christian, and his eyes will be opened in ways, and to truths that cannot be found in church teaching, and may not easily be discovered from the Bible. "He who has ears, let him hear," Matt. 13:9. "For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it," Matt 13:17.
