a biomedical "Bible"
Dr. McCandless has outdone herself with this one. There's so much "sugar coating" in the autism community, it's refreshing to be treated as a "professional parent" rather than a frail flower. She gives precise info that is being used by 1000's of parents of children with autism every day. This woman and this book has saved my son's outlook on life. She's given me the inspiration to be a better, more informed parent. There is no hand holding here, there is no "get you through it" chapter. There ARE hundreds of pages of vital information that every parent even CONSIDERING biomedical intervention can not be without. Another review complained of "coldness and lack of humanity"... couldn't be further from the truth. She's didn't write the book to be your emotional counselor, she wrote it to help YOUR child and HER grand daughter. There is not one ounce of blame or assumption on any page of this book. If the previous reviewer read that, she was reading from her own emotions, not the words in this book. Dr. McCandless never claims to make your child "un" autistic, she give YOU the info to make better judgement calls in your child's biomedical health. If you pick only one book, pick this one....you will not get any better.

Excellent Reference for Biomedical Interventions
Children with Starving Brains describes what is wrong with ASD children and what you can do to improve the child's condition even if your child's physician knows very little about autism. It is written in clear and understandable "layman's" terms, making it my most used resource. I highly recommend it to parents and to the child's physician.

Useful book.
This is a nice overview of urology. The chapters are a quick read and well put together. This is a good intro to the diagnosis, and treatment of urologic diseases. While this is a good book for people at all levels of medical education, I think it is best for upper level medical students and interns.

Fina a new life through just one book!
This book is beyond words to review it properly. MFR treatment with the John Barnes, PT system, and the wisdom in this book have literally given me a new life, taken me from being almost wheelchair bound, to being mobile, no longer housebound, and to now live with what pain has not YET been eliminated. I would not have believed the book, but I really DO, it has happened to me. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It will help you find peace, comfort and the path to a new life.

A MUST for Healing...
This is the most profound book that I have ever read. It will "over and beyond" meet the needs of medical professionals, as well as the needs of their patients, regarding fascia constrictions and the affects those constrictions have on the body. Also, it goes into great depth regarding the correlation of how all wounds encountered in life affect our bodies and not just our minds...an extension of fixing the complete self in gains of becoming a whole self. You will not be able to lay this book down if you truly have a fascia problem, as story after story illustrate the healing powers of Myofascial Release. I contacted the John Barnes facilities for information on healing for myself before I even finished reading the book. WOW, its like being in one of the seminars!
I bought this book, intending to read it slowly and digest all the wisdom it encompassed. Instead, I found myself voractiously attacking the book, unable to slow down. I'm in my second reading now. But if you've taken any of John Barnes' seminars, you'll feel like you've come home, and if you've never taken any seminars or experienced being a patient of MFR, its a wonderful introduction to the heart and soul of myofasical release. I can't recommend it highly enough!

A Rosetta Stone for those coping with dis-ease.
For anyone curious about myofascial release, its benefits and applications for health and healing,this book is a marvelous start for what can be an extraordinary journey. Definetly worth the money...
I am a US citizen and a caribbean medical student. I was deathly afraid of the CSA--primarily because of the idea that failing it meant another $1200. I studied with a classmate of mine for about 2 months and then studied with a family member for another month (although studying with someone is not required--you can do it on your own). We role-played each case and did the write-ups all under the CSA timed conditions. This is really important! The book is great but just make sure you time each session--both the data gathering and the write-ups. You need to memorize the order of a H&P if you haven't already. When you get to the exam you will be able to take what you learned from the book and pass. The book allows you to hit the high points of what you should get out of the encounter without wasting too much time. The only negative about the book is that some questions that should be asked in some of the cases are omitted. Just make sure that you systematically go through the book and time it.

A good resource for CSA prep
Although it doesn't have the real CSA format, it is worth studying. It can help you get insight about the CSA. It also has a lot of high-yield complaints that can appear on the real CSA. You can practice thorough history taking and physical exam with the checklist. A must for CSA/CSE candidates!

I passed just because of this book
I felt for an IMG this book is very useful and I am sure the success of this book will continue with introduction of CSE for US graduates. I would not have passed CSA without the help of this book

best buy for the money
CSA is very expensive and I didn't want to fail it. I prepared for a month with this book and felt I didn't need to read anything else. With this book and the video that ECFMG gives out, I passed without breaking a sweat. I felt comfortable during the exam, and knew what to do. The cases are very similar to what you really get on the exam, and they tell you in the book exactly what you need to do. VERY GOOD BOOK!

all you really need for CSA!!!
I prepared CSA in ten days. This book was AWESOME!!! I got four cases very similar to the ones in the book, and the others were close enough to know exactly how to approach them. The second edition as an appendix on the patient's note, which I found very useful. I honestly didn't consult any other source for the CSA and I'm happy to say this book was worth every penny.

My only advice is that you WORK WITH A PARTNER. Have a friend play your standarized patient, ask questions according to the guidelines given, and do your physical exam. It is a lot more fun and you practice on time management. This book provides the answers to your standarized patient, so he/she doesn't have to know anything about medicine. It also discusses DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS and the basic labs that should be ordered (and why!). It also stresses the importance of good communication skills and empathetic approach. Different cases will measure different things (like one case is purely communication skills and others are mainly history taking, whereas there are a few that only focus on physical exam). The trick is that you never know what each case will measure, so if you want to "pass", you have to do everything well!

In the real CSA, you don't get cards that tell you about findings on the physical exam, so whatever you don't see in a standarized patient, you have to assume as normal. This is the only inaccuracy of the book, but it's a minor detail if you are aware of it.

Time management: start timing yourself the moment you begin reading the introduction to the patient. Knock on the door (I used a spare room in my house to practice), and come in. Introduce yourself and get to the history taking and physical exam. This you should do in 15 minutes (even if the book sometimes gives you 10 minutes for the easy cases). Have someone (or an alarm clock) tell you when 10 minutes have passed, so you will know it's time to wrap up. Walk out the door after 15 minutes. You will be given 10 minutes to write the patient's note. A template of the note is provided in the book, but it is better to use the one given by ECFMG once you apply to the CSA.

Like I said, I think this book is more than enough for CSA. I also had the 40 cases that are out there on the web and they were not nearly as organized and clear. I ended up not even reading them. ... Read more

Excellent 12 Lead ECG Book for All Levels
This is by far the best book for learning and refining 12-lead ECG interpretation skills that I have read. The material is structured so that it can be used as a classroom text or as a self-guided teaching tool. Within the book, Garcia and Holtz divide the material into three clearly marked levels from a basic review of cardiac physiology through an advanced level of ECG interpretation. The text is written in an easy-to-read, conversational style and the graphics and ECG tracings are some of the best I've ever seen in this kind of book. On top of this, Garcia and Holtz have included plenty of useful diagnostic pearls throughout each chapter, making this a highly readable and educational book. I use levels one and two to teach my paramedic students the fundamentals of 12-lead ECG interpretation. I also recommend Garcia and Miller's "Arrhythmia Recognition: The Art of Interpretation" (ISBN 0763722464) as a rhythm interpretation reference.

Excellent study guide
This book is hands down the best book on EKG interpretation I've ever used. Garcia and Holtz start you from the basics and go no where but up to the top, all the while drilling in the concepts with repeat practice EKGs. This is what makes it extremely practical - you'll be able to put the information you learn to use right away. If you're just starting to learn about EKGs, this book is well worth the cost

Simply The Best!
I have been teaching 12 Lead ECGs and Acute Coronary Syndromes for several years now, and I have read just about every book available on the topic. I can tell you without a doubt that this is the most comprehensive 12 lead book I have ever owned. Garcia and Holtz have truly done a service to the medical communtiy by compiling this book.

I love the way this book is arranged. Part I of the book (about 70 pages) deals with anatomy, physiology, basic rhythm interpretation, and the nuts and bolts of electrocardiography. Part II of the book (the remaining 600 plus pages) deals with the art of interpretation. Garcia and Holtz are innovative. Explanations are color coded into various levels of difficulty. If you are new to 12 leads, you can stick to level 1 explanations (blue). If you're getting the hang of things, or have some experience already, you can take it to level 2 (green). Or, if you're at the physician level, you're sure to enjoy the level III commentary (orange). This makes _12-Lead ECG The Art of Interpretation_ the gift that keeps on giving as you become more proficient at 12 lead interpretation.

If you're only interested in identifying acute myocardial infarction, then you might want to consider Tim Phalen's book. It will tell you everything you need to know. However, if you really want to learn how to read a 12 lead ECG, then this book is definitely for you. Whether it's atrial enlargemt, a depolarization abnormality, drug effect, ischemia, or just about anything else you can think of, you're likely to find several outstanding examples in this book.

It's well worth the investment.

Something for Everyone
This is an excellent book. It is well laid out and easy to follow with enough information to satisfy most potential users, regardless of knowledge base.
I highly recommend this book if you are serious about learning 12 lead interpritation. If you are strictly looking for rhythm interpritation, there are better.

One of the best EKG books available, esp for med students
This book is fantastic, and in my opinion is of a much better quality and more user-friendly than the Dubin text ("Rapid Interpretation of EKGs") that is so widely lauded. For a start, Dr. Garcia and Mr. Holtz have a wonderful, friendly, amusing, down-to-earth style of writing that is without the pretense so common among books geared to medical professionals. The three level system is great for prioritizing the material into what you absolutely must know versus things that are nice to know but can wait. Level 1 breaks down the basics into the true basics, assumes you know nothing (or almost nothing, which is a significant number of 3rd year med students like me! After cramming so much for so long, there's bound to be brain leakage...) Levels 2 and 3 are great, but are probably beyond the scope of anything a med student is likely to see on a shelf exam or even the USMLE Steps 1 and 2. Could be wrong, but that's the impression I have so far. If you have the time, it certainly can't hurt. At any rate, this book is a very easy read, full of nice big pictures and pretty colors (great for tired eyes and visual learners in general), and is perhaps the only book I've read on the subject thus far that has actually stuck with me! At the very least, make this a strongly recommended buy to your school's librarian, but you'll probably want a copy for yourself as well. ... Read more

Precision movement matters!
Having harrassed the author for close to four years I am pleased to say that this text represents what might best described an a "hinge in history". I agree that the concepts and examination items might be challenging for those used to a "cookbook" strategy but I am sure Shirley will agree that she did NOT invent anatomy or kinesiology! Systematic clinical examination, identifying movement deviations from mechanical precision and optimising efficient movement patterns are not large leaps of logic. Major car manufacturers and airlines have been doing this for years; analyse patterns of wear and tear on components and see what lasts the longest! However, humans in their comfortable/familiar patterns don't invest in the valid and rational practice of prevention and damage analysis. I know UK colleagues will take the path of least resistance when trying out the exam items within this book and say "Well it doesn't predict chronicity!" or "What about psychosocial factors?". To them and the pain biology fanatics I say this...when viruses, bacteria, trauma, genetics and family relationships have been analysed, what are the three primary drivers of nociception? Bogduk delineated the mechanical deformation model of nociception; Sahrmann has now thrown down the gauntlet with the movement paradigm to support or negate. Roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and join those of us liberated from surreal Southern Hemisphere skeleton pushing. Active rehabilitation with empiricism, determinism and a healthy cynicism! This text gives content and not just theory/process models - try telling a student that clinical reasoning is a valid model when they don't know what to look for!

Long awaited text for expert practice
Physical therapists like myself have been waiting for a text from the author for over 10 years. Definitely a text for someone well versed in the anatomy and mechaincs of the musculoskeletal system. This text is written in clear categories and deals with problems in three general areas. It takes effort and analytic thinking to understand the myriad of motions listed in the text. A CD with actual demonstrations would help immensely in seeing all the factors the author is illustrating. The introduction covers very complex ideas made as simple as possible by the author. I would recommend this text for any movement specialist but I would caveat my recommendation with the warning that hard work is needed to really grasp the techniques listed in this text. Primary guide for Otoacoustic Emissions
Otoacoustic emissions are covered in this text more thoroughly than in any other I've seen, from the different types of emissions, to measurement systems, to potential uses for the data collected (e.g. UNHS, ototoxicity monitoring etc.). a towering text on adult echocardiography
this is a comprehensive text aimed at the cardiologist. all aspects of echo is covered. initial portion of book is devoted to man and machine. successive chapters cover various diseases like vulvular, ischaemic, cardiomyopathy etc in detail. easier to understand concise forms are found in harrison's textbook of medicine and in braunwald diseases of heart. the book has a large number of pictures and doppler tracings. hemodynamics are covered in length , although pisa is not. new edition is eagerly awaited.

A classic

Dr. Dawson's text sets the standard for predictably understanding cause and effect relationship. Predictable, excellent dentistry requires a "global" view of cause and effect. Easy to reference, easy to help treat
I'm a Physician Assistant student working in a busy military hospital.This book is absolutely wonderful if you're looking for a quick diagnosis and treatment to common skin diseases.It's easy to reference, there are diagrams showing lesion distribution as well as beautiful pictures of common presentations, and an easy-to-reference treatment section.This won't cover everything, and you'll have to use a more comprehensive derm book for "zebras", but on the whole it's an excellent reference book in a general care environment.

perfect for general practice
I am a family resident doing a rotation in dermatology and this is the book i am using.It is simple enough that you don't need an extensive background in derm to understand it, but it is complete enough to provide all the info you need.great pictures, clear explanations (skin/non skin findings, progression of the disease, treatment...)The color coded pictures of usual distribution are incredibly useful!
It is probably not enough for a derm resident, but for a rotation through derm, or for general practice, this is what you need.

By far the best for your money!
I use this book in my primary care clinic all the time, and it's enormously useful -- much better than Fitzgerald. It has good pictures of the typical presentations, not only the most severe cases. The pictures of the usual distribution of lesions are also very helpful. The recommendations for treatment are clearly laid out. I highly recommend it!

Great photos, great dermatological synopsis
Those practitioners looking for a good overview of many dermatological conditions, with up to date treatments have found a pear in this Habib edition.This book stays on my desk or in a room - where I peruse through pictures or show patients pictures of others with their condition.Most dermatological atlas or text are incredibly expensive.The price makes this edition a MUST BUY.

Partial Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems
I think this book is Possibly the best Mathematic book for Engineer I've ever read. This is due to the fact that the material is so much clear and the examples are so easy to follow. The book's explanation is precise and accurate. The exercises on every chapter are helpful. I practise almost most of the exercise problems. In fact, I score an "A" on the first Test. I will recommend it to everyone without hesitation.

Initial impressions
Nakhle: Just a quick note to thank you for your book! It arrived Thursday, and I've been reading it and doing the exercises both on paper and in Mathematica 3.0. After a quick review of the whole book and a thorough reading of the first 70 pages so far, I can say I just love it! If I'd only had a book like this in college and graduate school I'd have become a much better electrical engineer. Yours is one of the best expositions of both Fourier series and partial differential equations I've used. Although I haven't gotten very far into the boundary value problems and the orthogonal functions areas of the book yet, my initial review indicates they will be excellent also. I am enjoying your book immensely, and I thank you very much for it. I'll update this with a more thorough review when I have a chance to finish the book, but I wanted to share my initial impressions so others might weigh them into their own decisions to get this excellent book.

A clear introduction to PDEs, Fourier series
This text not only provides a simple and easy-to- read-the-first-time guide to solving PDEs with Fourier series, it also is chock-full with all the necessary details and includes many interesting problems. I took a course out of this book as a sophomore in college and found it very interesting and useful. The style and difficulty is very similar to a typical undergraduate ordinary differential equations book, except this is better organized.

The subjects include a small bit on characteristics for first-order equations, a chapter on trigonometric series, PDEs in rectangular, polar, and spherical systems and associated eigenfunction expansions, Sturm-Liouville theory, the fourier transform, Laplace/Hankel transforms for PDEs, grid-type numerical methods, sampling & discrete Fourier analysis, and quantum mechanics (the Schrödinger equation).

This book is definitely great for applied mathematicians, physicists, or engineers who really need a solid introduction to the topic, written by someone who knows all the details. Any treatment in "mathematical physics" courses on PDEs will fall short of this book's content.

Of particular importance are the inclusion of special sections for Bessel functions, Legendre polynomials, associated Legendre functions, spherical harmonics, etc. All the details of solution and many exercises are included.

The most interesting parts of the book are towards the end, with the Sampling Theorem and discrete Fourier transform; and the proof of Heisenberg's uncertainty principle.

This book is also useful for more theoretical mathematicians or mathematical physicists who need an introduction to PDEs before taking a more difficult course on general theory.

In short, I think that even though this book is of great utility to non-mathematicians, it is proper to learn these concepts and techniques in a proper math setting where care is taken. This text is a solid foundation for confident application and a springboard towards more advanced subjects. ... Read more

Essential reading for psychotherapists
Decoding the Ethics Code is must reading for psychotherapists from all the mental health guilds. Celia Fisher was a member of the APA committee that drafted the 2002 revision of the Ethical Code, and there is nothing like going to the source.
