5-0 out of 5 stars The best book out there on the subject!
It seems that after twenty years, this integral story vital to our understanding and improving of modern medicine is being told. Everyone interested in health and healing must read this book. In it, Dr. Berkson recounts his tales from his own personal experiences from treating patients dealing with a wide array of health problems with this amazing antioxidant. The author explains the mechanisms of alpha lipoic acid and the significance it can play in the treatment of cancer, diabetes, and numerous other diseases. Dr. Berkson also diagnoses an easy to follow and effective protocol to healthy living. The author is obviously the premier authority in this field and spins his tale with remarkably clear and engaging prose. The message of this book is simple: alpha lipoic acid has saved lives before and, as more people are educated on it's uses, there are many more lives that will be saved and improved. A must read for anyone remotely interested in the exciting field of modern integrative medicine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and helpful and true, written by himself.
In the introductory of The Alpha Lipoic Acid book, written by Dr. Burt Berkson, my husband John and I, Eunice Goostree, are the people that Dr. Burt were refering to. We ate the Amanita Verna Mushroom and John nearly died. Thioctic Acid, liquid form of Alpha Lipoic Acid is all that saved us. When the chief of staff at the hospital gave up on us, Dr. Berkson KNEW that he could save us and to the amazement of all others, we are alive and well.I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Berkson, his books, his ethics, his compassion and his determination to save his patients even when all of the odds were against him. We love you Dr. Berkson.

We have been to Dr. Berkson's office, and he is a marvelous Dr.!! You should have some kind of review to let people know about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Add ALA to your daily supplements!
Dr. Berkson has put his research and findings into terms that all can
understand. I had hepititis and recovered, but suffered from minor
liver malfunctions which triggered constipation and poor digestion of
fats. Merely the addition of Alpha Lipoic Acid has helped restore my
liver function and aleviated my problems. I've gained much usable
information from his book about preventing heart disease, a family
problem....I am thankful that I have finally found a supplement that
has helped me with those continuing liver related problems.

Book Description

The field of cost-effectiveness analysis has lacked an entry-level textbook until now. Designing and Conducting Cost-Effectiveness Analyses in Medicine and Health Care is a hands-on guide for conducting economic analyses that closely follows the recommendations of the Panel on Cost-Effectiveness in Health and Medicine. Step by step, Dr. Muennig outlines the theory and practice of cost-effectiveness and shows how to develop an original research question, retrieve data, design a decision analysis tree, calculate quality-adjusted life years, and test for error in analysis. The book provides clear and detailed instruction and includes a review of the epidemiological and biostatistical skills students need to conduct cost-effectiveness analyses. While the book is designed for students, it includes advanced topics for policymakers, community health experts, and preventive medicine residents who are interested in the field. The book uses a worked example to walk the reader through the process of designing and conducting an analysis and provides links to all of the major Internet-accessible sources of government data. This book will be a welcome addition to the library of students and seasoned researchers alike. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good guided tour of cost-effectiveness analyses
This book was really well-written in that everything was laid out clearly and consistently. I could basically choose my level of involvement, since the author explicitly delineates what each chapter and each exercise is for. The book was especially helpful in helping me choose which statistical methods of analysis would best fit the data set and research question I was working on; no other books I looked up did this in a readable way. Also, what really impressed me is the fact that the book made all the exercises not only seem, but actually feel, easy (or at least logical), and it wasn't until the end that I realized that I had built a decent foundation in cost-effectiveness analysis. The lessons were cumulative, so that the process of doing the problem sets actually felt fulfilling. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Well written but not the best solution for the USMLE step 2
This book will help medical students to test their knowledge on major topics of biostatistics, epidemiology, preventive medicine and public health. The explanations are of appropriate length and content. As an international medical graduate, I found the parts on the provision of health services and legal and ethical issues very useful. However, in my opinion, this book lacks an organized approach of each subject tested. Questions appear rather at random making it hard to perform a systematic review. In addition, I would not recommend this book for the preparation of the USMLE step 2 examination as preventive medicine is a low-yield topic in this examination and reviewing from this source is time-consuming and not that efficient. I also think most of the questions contained in this book and especially those on biostatistics do not reflect the style of the USMLE step 2 examination. There are few clinical vignettes whereas almost all questions in the USMLE step 2 examination are now of this type. In conclusion, this is a good book to test one's knowledge on biostatistics, epidemiology and preventive medicine and public health but it is not the best choice one could make while studying for the USMLE step 2 examination. ... The latest printing of the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services includes the "3rd edition" addendum. The 3rd edition updates are new recommendations that in some cases replace chapters from the 2nd edition and the rest are entirely new.

The 2nd edition is presented intact with the 3rd provided as an appendix of 14 additional chapters.

As new chapters become available, they will be provided in subsequent printings.

Book Description

"Before a heart attack or stroke 'happens' to you, read this important book. It just might save your life."-Edward Philbin, M.D., George Pataki Chair in Cardiology, Chief, Division of Cardiology Albany Medical Center

Do you have a history of heart problems in your family?
Do you have even slightly elevated blood pressure?
Has your cholesterol ever been a bit high?

If you can answer yes to even one of these questions, you need to read this book. Because by following Dr. Jonathan Sackner Bernstein's breakthrough plan, you could cut your individual risk of heart attack in half-even if you don't start an exercise program or change your diet.

Under Dr. Sackner Bernstein's plan, you will be screened for heart disease with a few doctor-ordered blood tests. Then, depending on the findings, you will be treated with up to four tested and safe medications: an aspirin, an ACE-inhibitor, a statin, and a beta-blocker. The scientific evidence for this strategy is overwhelming: the medications work, they stave off heart disease, and they bring heart health back.

Explaining the science as well as how to talk to your doctor about his or her necessary involvement, Before It Happens to You will help you identify your heart issues. Providing both prevention advice and treatment advice, it can and will save lives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book to save a life
Few books can change lives like this one will. Even fewer books can save a life. Give this as a gift to anyone who is ignoring the fact that his or her blood pressure or weight is a little high or that they have high cholesterol. This book explains it all in simple non-medical terms. The advice--if you can't successfully exercise and diet (and many of us can't), take the drugs, but don't ignore the numbers--is something to live by. One sour note--drugs can't do it all and shouldn't be expected to--there should be a more thorough explanation of how diet and exercise help or replace the need for drugs. I also wonder if the author has a large financial stock holding in drug companies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Proactive health care
This is a clearly written, thought-provoking book that makes a compelling case for the proactive use of drug therapy to ward off heart disease. Bernstein's suggestions are practical and easy to follow, right down to advice as to how to discuss these ideas with a family doctor. A must-read for everyone who isn't content with the current state of reactive, status-quo health care as managed by insurance companies!

5-0 out of 5 stars Before It Happens to You: A Breakthrough Program for Reversi
Bernstein (director, clinical research and the Heart Failure Prevention Program, Northshore Hosp., Long Island, NY) provides a realistic take on treating early heart disease by lowering high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Given that heart disease is America's top killer and that most people will not change the lifestyle risks that could help prevent cardiovascular events, his prescription-that most adults over 40 "will be able to achieve optimal [cardiovascular] health by using a customized mix ofaspirin, statins, beta-blockers and/or ACE inhibitors"-makes sense. Under his plan, a few simple blood tests can help doctors determine which combination of medications works best for individual patients. Well written and well organized, Bernstein's book offers clear explanations of scientific research that will help public library patrons understand heart disease, diagnostic tests, and test results. Those looking for a book that emphasizes diet therapy for cardiovascular health should read John P. Cooke's The Cardiovascular Cure

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceedingly useful as a basic primer for healthy living
Before It Happens To You: A Breakthrough Program For Reversing Or Preventing Heart Disease by Jonathan Sackner Bernstein (Director of Clinical Re-search and Director of the Heart Failure Prevention Program at North Shore University Hospital in New York) is a straightforward guide to working with one's doctor and making healthier lifestyle changes for one's personal needs in order to keep one's heart healthier and less susceptible to problems such as heart attack or stroke. A no-nonsense account which is especially appropriate for non-specialist general readers of all background and occupations, Before It Happens To You is exceedingly useful as a basic primer for healthy living and highly recommended for community library Health & Medicine reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative, Usable Immediately
I found this book very easy and informative reading. For those of us just starting out in the "healthy heart" investigation, it seems to be a clearly written how-to manual of an "immediately usable" alternative. I personally cannot find the time to exercise as necessary to maintain a really healthy system, and along with at least a good diet this seems like a safe program with pretty immediate benefits. The challenge will come in presenting this to my doctor, but Dr. Sackner Bernstein has anticipated this with a great section on how to discuss it with your physician and how to be firm in the face of some expected skepticism. He has either provided proven data in the book that I can show my doctor, and/or has given some sources that I plan to use to make my case. I'm looking forward to getting these test done and seeing the benefits from the program. I've already recommended the book/program to some friends and they seem to feel the same as I do. ... It is an invaluable and comprehensive resource for any clinicain interested in wellness and prevention. It draws on expertise from leaders in the field and offers a breadth of evidence-based information on health promotion. The text includes multi-cultural perspectives which is an added benefit. 1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly written, difficult to read/
I am in nursing school and this is the worst book I have ha to read in my college career. It is difficult to read and much of the information is old. One reason it is hard to read is that 75% of the text is referencing to other research work and it disrupts the reading flow. Do not buy this book!

Book Description

`This gripping narrative not only documents the history of humankind's interaction with a clever virus, it brings to the forefront the much and understated and underused role of communication in HIV and AIDS prevention, care and treatment. Singhal and Rogers remind us that our global environment is shaped by powerful communication means and methods that, if properly harnessed, can help defeat the plague of the 21st century' - Neil McKee, Senior Technical Advisor for HIV//AIDS and Adolescent Health, Johns Hopkins University

`This book is an important contribution to AIDS education globally. The rich and diverse cases analyze, humanize and contextualize the continuum of HIV//AIDS prevention, care and support. Researchers and practitioners will find this book most useful' - Collins Airhihenbuwa, Professor of Bio-Behavioural Health, Penn State University

`Educating people about AIDS is one of the biggest communication challenges that we face today. This remarkable book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the challenges and ways to overcome it. Thorough and hopeful, this is one of those books that can actually make a difference in this world' - Emanuel Rosen, author of 'The Anatomy of Buzz'

`A thoroughly readable and inspiring book by two of the world's foremost health communication experts. Accessible and personalised, it is a "must-read" for all those interested in AIDS prevention, care and support' - Shereen Usdin, Co-Founder of the Soul City Institute of Health and Development Communication, South Africa

`This book provides a comprehensive analysis of the strategies related to HIV//AIDS communications. It is published at a critical moment as the world increasingly realizes the role of communication in the fight against HIV//AIDS' - Rafael Obregon, Social Communication Advisor, Pan American Health Organization

HIV//AIDS is a matter of global concern. The world is now more than 20 years into the HIV//AIDS crisis with no vaccine in sight, and relatively few effective and sustainable prevention programs. Although the rate of HIV infection and AIDS deaths has declined in the richer nations of the developed world, infection rates are soaring in developing countries. AIDS is now the leading cause of death in Africa, and the fourth leading cause of death globally.

The purpose of this book is to synthesize critical lessons about effective HIV//AIDS prevention programmes, with a major emphasis on communication strategies. The authors feel that despite the growing AIDS crisis, the world is making poor use of behaviour change and communication strategies for HIV//AIDS prevention. To begin with, the role of communication strategies in HIV prevention, care and support has been grossly underestimated. Prevention is shortchanged, despite the fact that no cure for AIDS has been found, and the cost of anti-retroviral therapy is out of reach for most who need it. Many communication strategies are culturally inappropriate, so they may offend public sensitivities, which is easy to do when dealing with a sensitive topic that involves sex, stigma and death.

Combating AIDS: Communicaton Strategies in Action focuses on communication strategies that could mobilize political action, target high-risk groups, and overcome stigma. The authors have also described and analyzed the value of entertainment-education strategy in HIV prevention and care, highlighting the use of popular, long-running television and radio soap operas to engage audiences emotionally and create a forum for public debate and discussion.

Focusing on the work being carried out by the individuals and organizations, this book humanizes the AIDS epidemic. Interesting, informative, and readable, this unique book will be of interest to those in the field of community and public health, social medicine, social work and public policy, as well as media professionals and voluntary agencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insightful & thoughtful... a book every parent should read.
A friend of mine bought this book for me as a gift and I think it's one of the best gifts I've ever received. I'm a mother of an adolescent girl and learning how children think and learn about health has been really elightening. It's made me think a lot about my own daughter and how both the media and the people in her life have been shaping her views of health. I think this book is especially helpful and insightful today given that more and more children are learning and aquiring poor health behaviors at a much earlier age. ... Read more

Book Description

With much of the research on HIV risk being done on men, a gap exists in the literature on how women's behavior increases their risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, especially with regard to women who have suffered childhood sexual abuse or family trauma. Women with a past history of abuse or trauma often feel powerless and therefore have less ability to make safe sexual decisions for themselves. This book addresses these women specifically, as they are particularly vulnerable to a host of risky behaviors, such as engaging in unprotected sex, a lack of assertiveness about practicing safe sex, and a tendency to choose partners with high incidents of HIV infection. Utilizing longitudinal research, the authors have identified the mediational nature of the process of how traumatic events in childhood lead to increased HIV risk as adults. The book: Approaches the outcomes of childhood maltreatment systematically, Demonstrates for the first time the need to examine the mediators of abuse, the indirect paths from childhood experiences to adult behaviors, Offers useful measures of HIV risk based on risky behaviors, Presents a feminist analysis of cultural norms that support HIV risk in women. The research presented clarifies present conceptualizations of interpersonal power, and gender's impact on the process and negotiation of, and desire to engage in, safer sexual practices. Knowing the importance of mediators will enable counselors and therapists to intervene on these variables at an early stage, thereby helping to reduce the incidence of subsequent risky behavior. ...
