Book Description

This new Second Edition addresses the latest in picture archiving and communications systems (PACS), from the electronic patient record to the full range of topics in digital imaging. In contrast to the previous edition, this updated text uses the framework of image informatics, not physics or engineering principles, to explain PACS. This book is the only resource that thoroughly covers the critical issues of hardware/software design and implementation in a systematic and easily comprehensible manner.
The new edition features additional chapters on web-based PACS, security, integrating the healthcare enterprise, clinical management systems, and the electronic patient record.
It addresses how PACS can improve workflow, therapy, and treatment, and discusses integration of PACS in hospitals. Offering a clear guide for those purchasing and installing PACS, it is written in clear, non-technical language by a widely acknowledged pioneer in the field and does not assume advanced knowledge of physics, engineering, or math principles. The text also contains substantive new treatment of key topics in image informatics, including light imaging, digital radiography, teleconsultation, and image archive servers.

1-0 out of 5 stars carlton and adler radiographic imaging
This book does have good content but for those of you who are in your first semesters of Radiology technology it clearly does not simplify the information. It does not produce good examples or diagrams to make learning easy. It is also very cut and dry and makes it very difficult to read. It has no glossary and is poor in producing definitions. I highly recommend Bushong not only is the book fun to read but makes some of the more complex principles easier to understand. The workbook is really great also to help you prepare for your test and the end of the chapter quesions are nice because it helps to check see if you got the understanding of the chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great first book
I find this one a "better" overall textbook than Christensen and Bushong. More inspiring, cosier and fairly well written. Downside : I personally found myself wanting some radiation physics tables that I had to find elsewhere ("Medical Imaging Physics"), and think the authors left out many interesting aspects physics wise, but your average student might find this works out just fine. Almost perfect starter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text for students
Overall, this is an excellent text for radiography students and also physician residents in radiology. The text is comprehensive and easy to understand. We particularly like the abundance of drawings and tables. The special imaging chapters are very detailed and provide excellent information for students and others who use this text for reference purposes. The chapter on mammography is particularly good as it is the only chapter of its kind in any textbook. This chapter is excellent for those programs that teach comprehensive mammography. The mammography art and images are superb. Seasoned radiography educators are authors of this text and that makes this a unique book and one that is accurate technically.

4-0 out of 5 stars overall good basic understanding
I instruct Radiography Physics for 1st and 2nd year radiography students. I have found this book to be one of the easier ones to understand for basic priciples. Excellent learning or review tool. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook, gain something new everytime I read it
Must have for anyone interested in MSK, worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Radiology residents needed a book like this.
If you like the Requisites series of texts, this book is for you. Let's face it, the average radiology resident can't wade through Stoller or Berquist and expect to remember much. This book takes musculoskeletal MR and breaks it down into a Requisites-format book of manageable length. Boxes indicating "key points" abound, and the pictures are of high quality. The length is appropriate for an introductory MSK MR rotation.

On the minus side, the book is definitely not an exhaustive reference text. The knee chapter is relatively short, especially given the huge volumes of knee MRs radiologists are seeing. Also, the authors are a bit too opinionated about which sequences to use in some chapters - a more evidence-based and less anecdotal approach to tailoring exams would have been more useful.

Overall, highly recommended for radiology residents who are encountering MSK MR for the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars The missing link
This is a very good text especially for the cost.

True to the authors intentions, the text presents practical aspects of interpreting musculoskeletal magnetic resonance studies. The text is perfectly suited to radiology residents, fellows and radiologists interpreting routine mri's. Essential technical information including suggestions for protocols are provided as well as an organized approach to interpretation.

I liked the sequence of normal descriptions immediately followed by associated pathology. There were sufficient images of excellent quality. Illustrations and diagrams are well thought out and "boxes" with core information are also present for those of us who just want the essential list! Definitely an easily read text. One should realize that this, however, is not a reference text! A musculoskeletal radiologist or individual with special interest in this area will likely find this too superficial. But the authors intentions are not to replace Resnick or Stoller's excellent reference texts.

Bottom line is I definitely recommend it for the price because it fills the gap between an intro book and the heavy duty texts just as it intends to...it is the missing link. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable radiographic reference!
Although the title of this book sounds extremely dry, unapproachable, and cumbersome, this book is a well-organized compilation of every type of unusual looking radiograph for every part of the human body. In my job as an Army physical therapist, I commonly have to screen plain radiographs. This reference has been invaluable to myself and others that work in my clinic, especially when evaluating foot and ankle films. There are several (more than a dozen) accessory bones that may be present, and these are all very well mapped out, each with a radiographic example, explanation, and key points to consider when evaluating each specific view. Excellent reference text!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have recently received my book and am thrilled. I have seen it at several pain meetings, but hadn't pulled the trigger on which pain book would give me my most bang for the book (Waldman, Raj, etc.). Image-Guided Spine Intervention is an excellent book and accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do, that is being a "how-to" book with superb imaging. In fact, I have yet to see a book that has more clear images than this book. While there are a few things that are missing in this book (discographic manometry, kyphoplasty-although the book came out just as this was emerging), all in the book is well worth the price. Reading Dr. Petersohn's commentary I wonder if we received the same book. The book is a "how-to" book and therefore is not intended to give clinical algorithms, although I admit it would make it an even more comprehensive book. The authors made the patient positioning understandable by referring to the projection with relation to the patient as opposed to the direction of the x-ray beam, which can be confusing. Perhaps in future editions, both positioning techniques can be given. With cervical transforaminal injections, one does not need a limiting AP projection to make sure one does not have cord or subdural penetration. If you follow their positioning and technique and intentionally hit the superior articular process, then walk a few mm anteriorly, you will necessarily be in the correct position, which is confirmed with contrast. For thoracic facet injections, previous reports including Dreyfuss demonstrate that one needs to start well inferior to the facet joint and angle cephalad in order to enter the coronally oriented thoracic facets. This book describes a technique, which demonstrates that this does not need to be done and that one can take a straight AP approach (proven with a CT injection) and still get the contrast into the entire joint. Dr. Chua's thoracic medial branch anatomy was just published this last year and post-dates this book. I agree there is no reason to give steroid after a facet denervation. The chapter on pharmacology was adequate for all pain practitioners. The book never sets out to be something to study for the boards. The statement "may be appropropriate for radiologists or physiatrists" sounds fairly hostile as well. As for discography, their approach to lumbar discography is reasonable. NASS and ISIS are only GUIDELINES not standards and there is no proof that there is an increased infection rate with single STYLETTED needle discography vs. double needle technique. They do not complain about L5-S1 access, rather that it is more difficult and that double-needle technique is often unnecessary. It makes sense to perform discography with a single needle since the new intradiscal procedures are performed that way. The authors do not list "pseudoarthrosis" as a contraindication to discography, but do list a solid posterolateral bone fusion as one due to lack of access.
I, too, am looking forward to a second edition that may have more clinical algorithms; more interventional techniques and those things that the authors may find have changed or should be improved on. However, I think this book is an excellent first attempt and is a much-needed book no matter who wrote it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Image-guided Spine - An introduction only
This is a laudable first effort which will undoubtedly be much improved on a second edition. The first edition is a welcome breath of air to help teach new residents and fellows the basics of needle manipulation, anatomy and spinal imaging, but falls short in many of the finer clinical points, mostly due to out of date or limited scope of references. There is no comprehensive discussion of appropriate clinical algorithims for selection of interventional techniques for clinical evaluation and treatment except for some superfical surgical commentary (see below). Consideration of the clinical neurosurgical and orthopedic spine surgery literature as well as the interventional pain literature is limited, although this bias is understandable in a book written by radiologists.

Patient positioning is described only in reference to the operating table, not to the more usual surgical position descriptors that most interventional physicians and surgeons commonly employ. A simple discussion on segmental anatomicaly enumeration and transitional anatomy would be a welcome addition.

Several glaring defects are apparent: The section on cervical injections does not discuss limiting AP radiographic landmarks for transforaminal injections (to avoid spinal cord or sub-dural injection) nor does it discuss the importance of the transforaminal ligaments in contrast distribution. The discussion of how to establish the optimal degree of fluoroscopic obliquity for cervical injections for both good imaging and patient safety is inadequate for the difficulty of the task. The thoracic facet injection section is incomplete, failing to including Paul Dreyfuss's procedural description or Chua's data on the locations of the mid-thoracic medial branches.

In a sample procedure note for radiofrequency rhizotomy, they routinely include postoperative injection of steroid, a technique of uncertain and, to my knowledge, unpublished efficacy. The authors should specifically acknowledge when they recommend or reference such matters as controversial or unsupported.

The section on pharmacology may be appropropriate for radiologists or physiatrists, but it is grossly inadequate for anesthesiologists. It is inadequate for preparation for the CAQ Pain Management Examination.

The discusssions of discographic technique are dated, incomplete and do not adequately reflect or reference the standards of ISIS or NASS (or the breadth of these groups published reviews on these topics). The recognized use of discography to study possible symptomatic pseudarthrosis is listed wrongly as a contraindication. Most of the authors complaints about the difficulty of L5-S1 discography can be resolved with use of double-needle technique, which the authors disparage without adequate rationale. There is inadequate detail paid to current literature on discography and the mechanism of discogenic pain generation which appear in the surgical and anesthesia literature. There is no clinical information on the history of trauma and production of annular injury. Discussion of the controversy over the inferential extension of clinically valid information from lumbar discography to its use in studying cervical or thoracic structures which would be welcome, if only to add balance to the discussion of technique. At a minimum, the anatomic differences of the cervical and thoracic discs should be discussed.

They have not explicitly discussed intervention of any sort in the post-instrumentation or post-fused spine, which benefits greatly from double-needle techniques.

The discussion of IDET is lengthy, obsessive in procedural details, but in many ways, entirely too superficial to guide a neophyte in an unsupervised setting.

The sugical comment sections, ostensibly added to provide clinical gravitas, are monolithic, gratuitous and fail to provide clinical relevance to the text.

The section on vertebroplasty is rambling, but adquate. Nonetheless, the book is recommended to residents and first year fellows as a secondary text and should be acquired by departmental libraries, especially if they budget to buy the second edition, which I'm certain will be much better. I would not generally recommend this book to my X-ray technologists although the CT illustrations are very well done - it simply doesn't justify the price of the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Xiulu Ruan, MD
I would like to thank and congratulate Dr. Fenton and Dr. Czervionke for the wonderful work in making this book available to all spine intervention specialists. I am a Physiatrist, currently receiving pain management fellowship training in the Dept. of Anesthesiology, Univ. of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Of all the interventional pain management books I have read, "Image- Guided Spine Intervention" is the best. The fine details of relavent anatomic consideration supplimented by numerous high quality illustrations, three-dimensional surface rendered CT images, MR images, step-by-step illustrations of needle placement as well as state-of-the-art radiographic images all make ths book a must-to-have for those who want to become spine interventionists. The Chapters on SNRB, Transforaminal ESI, RFA, Discogrphy, IDET are totally outstanding. My personal experience with reading this book as well as utilizing the technique taught during procedures has been incredible. Additionally, the inclusion of possible complications, routine postprocedure care, patient follow up, sample dictation and CPT codes for the procedures dicussed makes it a very practical manual as well. I could not be happier with this most wonderful book! ... Read more

Book Description

In the past five years, the development of new imaging technologies that make possible faster and more accurate diagnoses has significantly improved the imaging of disease and injury. This new edition of Squire's Fundamentals of Radiology describes and illustrates these new techniques to prepare medical students and other radiology learners to provide the most optimal and up-to-date imaging management for their patients. Not only are new diagnostic techniques outlined, such as the multidetector computed tomography diagnosis of pulmonary embolism and the diffusion-weighted magnetic-resonance imaging of stroke, but hundreds of new diagnostic images have been included to illustrate the radiological characteristics of common diseases with state-of-the-art computed radiography, ultrasound, multidetector computed tomography, and magnetic-resonance images. The text has been completely reviewed and updated to present the latest and best strategies in diagnostic imaging.

New interventional radiology procedures have been added, including vertebroplasty, a percutaneous injection treatment of painful spinal compression fractures; uterine artery embolization, a surgical alternative to hysterectomy in women with painful or bleeding uterine fibroids; and radiofrequency ablation, a percutaneous technique for treating unresectable tumors in the liver and other organs with probes that superheat and thus destroy cancer cells.

A new chapter on advances in diagnostic imaging describes many cutting-edge imaging technologies, such as three-dimensional and digital imaging, functional magnetic-resonance imaging, PET-CT (positron emission tomography combined with computed tomography), cardiac calcium CT scoring, multidetector gated cardiac CT, and molecular imaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars I will buy it
I am a medical student taking my radiology elective (finally) in the spring of my fourth year. Our department loaned the book to us during the rotation. I've found it to be one of those few books that I will actually purchase to have on my shelf at home (and I'm NOT going into radiology). It is written in a pleasing, conversational manner. The illustrations are of high quality. The discussions are at just the right level for an introduction to radiology. And there are many little "problems" presented throughout the text for the student to puzzle over. The answers are either listed in back, or turn up later in the "conversation" within a few pages. Although it seems long (over 500 pp?), it is mostly pictures. I highly recommend the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great introduction book
It is a very well written basic introductory book. This book is a must for any medical student interested in imaging. To get the most out of a radiology elective, suggest reading this book cover to cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I used this as my main text during my radiology rotation as a medical student.

I loved it. read it cover to cover and found it to be very easy to read and every page was worthwhile.

I would HIGHLY recommend it to medical students who want to gain solid introductory skills in radiology. I now feel that I can look at just about any imaging study and either make an easy diagnosis or follow the readings of radiologists with ease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Squire's Radiology
This book is very useful to anyone in or interested in a medical career. It is not only relevant to the medical profession but to the general public as well. Information contained in this book will educate the public about procedures that could or have already been performed on them. As a high school graduate about to enter into the Pre-medical program...I have found it useful in learning about the various forms of radiologic imaging. The book goes into great detail about how each form of imaging works...perhaps this is one of its weaknesses...it goes into far greater detail than anyone who hasn't had advanced medical training would need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly readable, a book to grow with
New to radiology, I found this book helpful, and an asset to my clinical training. Also, just an enjoyable read, with "unknowns" to test your knowledge as you go along. Excellent as a reference for those in other areas, and a good basic for the beginner in radiology -- probably the best "first" book to get. Highly recommend. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Only useful if you already have some background in radiology
Many of the "ridiculously simple" books are excellent starting points, but I am sorry to say that this book is not one of them. It has too few "normals", and too few images in general. Many of the pictures are just simple schematics, which are basically useless in practice unless you already have some idea of what the actual radiographs look like. If you already have some knowledge of radiology this book is a nice refresher, but if you're starting from ground zero I recommend The Wolf Files and/or a standard textbook instead of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent briefing, fast introduction
As neurology resident, I had to at head MRI, and CT. Yes there are great detailed review books and textbooks, but the chapter in this amazing book about both CT, MRI of head was "savior" for me. In my first few weeks, I needed something fast to read and most importantly to make this "dry" topic enjoyable which I easily found in those 20 pages.. I believe that not just Students should read it, but every resident doing neurology or rotating in Neurology, it is only 20 pages, easy to digest, and hard to be forgotten. I will add that I scanned the other chapters, Chest, Abdomen I found them very enjoyable too. Another success of this series

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, pertinent, excellent
I used this short text as a companion to my 4th year clinical radiology elective. The brief chapters focused on the common aspects of radiology, i.e., chest, abdomen, c-spine, axial skeleton, limbs, and head CT. It hammered home the key points of the lectures and cases which we were presented with on a daily basis. It is easy to read and understand and the radiographs are clear, unlike many texts which inadequately try to reproduce images on paper. I read this easily within a week, putting forth only 15-30 minutes of effort a night, and it certainly could be absorbed in one sitting. Really a must for 3rd and 4th year students as well as interns.

5-0 out of 5 stars You gotta start somewhere?!
One of the best of the "Ridiculous" series. Helps the reader get a handle on radiology at a level we only wish residents and attendings would put forth!! A bargain!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great jumpstart!
As a 3rd year med student, this book filled in the blanks I seemed to have missed 1st year in the radiographic part of my anatomy class. It contains the important basics accompanied by lots of clear radiographs illustrating the points under discussion. With good pictures and pertinent text only, you can count on what is in this text to be what you need to know to handle the basics. I found the skeletal section particularly helpful, as well as the introduction help master the concepts quickly. This book really helped expedite my learning, and additionally, my enjoyment of the topic. As a "getting the basics" text to help with tests, clinical rounds in 3rd and 4th year, and boards, I would recommend this book highly. I only wish I had known about it for 1st year! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The final Armada!
As a professional neuroradiologist, I recommend this book to all radiologists, neurologists and neurosurgeons who wish to choose just one book in the field of cerebral angiography. In this era of MRA and CTA, this book can give readers not too much, not too little knowledge about normal anatomy and pathological findings. Figures were clearly drawn and clinical DSA images were carefully chosen. Maybe those who wish to become professional neurointerventionists prefer those historical books edited by Dr. Newton, but I suppose even such people would love this book and read it daily. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent basic text but...
This remains an excellent textbook on neuroradiology. I think it should still be an essential read for a neuroradiology fellow. It is probably a little too much for a resident to "read through" during his/her neurorad rotations. The pictures are of high quality. But, the text book has one big drawback in that it is becoming more and more outdated. There is no significant mention of Diffusion/perfusion/PET imaging. I found this book to be a valuable read to gain knowlegde of the basics of neuroradiology. It bridges the gap between less detailed books such as the Mosby Handbook Series (also by A. Osborn) and a more complete reference text like Atlas' MRI of the Brain and Spine. This is still an excellent book to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars No new edition is forthcoming
I agree that this book is awesome. Those of us waiting for an update are doomed to disappointment, however. Dr. Osborne has been teaching at AFIP regularly, and has stated many times that her literary efforts will henceforth be dedicated to electronic-based media (eg Palm-Pilot), and that she is not planning any new editions of this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated....
This is a very good neuroradiology text. It is useful for those studying radiology as well as neurology. Illustrations and tables are wonderful. The brief pathophysiology of diseases is very useful. However, it is a bit incomplete because it has not been revised. It does not have PET or MR SPECT.

5-0 out of 5 stars But:
To quote a reviewr below: "I hope that Anne Osborne will come up with a new edition after more than 7 years".

No kidding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!! Wish the new edition comes out!
A great book. Excellent tables and summaries. Must read for all neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology residents. Although, it is getting too old and I hope that Anne Osborne will come up with a new edition after more than 7 years. ... Read more

Book Description

The recent progress of medical imaging due to CT, MRI, and the three-dimensional reconstruction of cerebral structures calls for a better understanding of the anatomy of the brain. Therefore, this book comprises serial sections - 2 mm thick - of the cerebral hemispheres and diencephalon in the coronal, sagittal, and axial planes. So as to point out the level of the sections more accurately, each section is shown from different angles emphasizing the surrounding hemisphere surfaces. This three-dimensional approach has proven to be extremely useful to apprehend the difficult anatomy of the gyri and sulci of the brain. Certain complex cerebral structures such as the occipital lobe, the deep grey matter (basal ganglia and thalamus), and the vascularization are demonstrated in greater detail. The second edition of this successful atlas has been completely revised and updated. 44 serial sections have been added showing the brain in much greater detail. Mostly two MRI views of improved quality are presented with almost every section. A chapter on the vascular anatomy of the brain with beautiful color drawings has been added. ... Read more
