5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for Radiologists and Orthopedicians
Since its first edition, this book has imposed itself as a new classic must have in any radiologist or orthopedicians library.
It is an excellent comprehensive review of orthopedic radiology covering all imaging modalities and all pathological entinties.
It is done in an excellent clear text with extensive radiographs, hand-drawn diagrams and summurizing tables with lot of "never seen before" explanatory diagrams.

5-0 out of 5 stars reading orthopedic films made easy
This is an excellent resource for the non-radiologist. It gives you an idea of what an acceptable film should look like. It organizes your thoughts on what your looking at and what you should be looking for in your films. The photos are crisp, and to clarify subtle findings, out to the side drawings help highlight the feature of interest (very helpful). I will get a copy for my office this year. ... Read more

Book Description

This bestselling text provides students with the basic knowledge of medical language they need to communicate clearly with other health care team members. It presents not only medical terms built from word parts, but also those not built from word parts — which are sometimes omitted from other texts. Logically organized with a body system approach, this text also provides a brief review of anatomic terminology. A wealth of exercises helps students memorize word parts and their meanings, so they’ll be equipped to recognize and define new medical terms.* This proven approach starts with a foundation of word parts — prefixes, suffixes, and word roots — then builds words by combining the parts. * Also covers terms not built from word parts, and distinguishes them from those that are. * Chapter outlines at the beginning of each chapter list the content and page numbers, for quick and easy reference. * A set of 480 flashcards is packaged with the book, providing a valuable study tool. * An audio CD includes pronunciations and definitions for more than 3,000 medical terms. * The text, CD, flashcards, and audio CDs can be combined to form a powerful learning package for the student. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars WELL-WRITTEN AND BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED
This well-written and beautifully illustrated textbook was designed for medical students. It is comprehensive: with each chapter sectioned into technical, anatomical and pathological sub-headings.
"Clinical Radiology: The Essentials" embraced all aspects of diagnostic and interventional imaging techniques currently in use. It is a general mini-reference text whose aim is to provide students with all the tutorials that they may need during revision.
Still, experienced radiologists would appreciate its concise outlook, which makes it an ideal memory-refreshing tool.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Radiology!
I truly recommend this book to every medical student, specially to those doing a rotation in Radiology. The book is marvelously illustrated with hundreds of big and clear photos of every diagnostic imaging modality currently used, showing the most important technical, anatomic and radiologic considerations one must have when ordering and evaluating an imaging study. The book is very clearly written, goes to the point and takes into account almost every clinical situation one is likely to encounter in practice. I could even say it's enjoyable.

3-0 out of 5 stars read a while and say goodnight
Radiology is enriched by this summarizing book in a more or less satisfying manner. In my opinion, the author has found an average compromise between textbook and atlas of radiological pathology. Although you will find many good figures of typical laesions, it may happen that you have to search for them for a little while, because this book is lacking a conceice content of figures. If one was a bloody beginner in radiology, a more detailed description of normal findings would have been helpful. Nevertheless, if you are interested in reading and looking a couple of time when nothing else is to do that night, you can never be wrong with that book. Moreover, the price is fair in comparison to similar books even appeared at LWW. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book for your ACLS class!
I am an RN and I recently passed the ACLS course given at my hospital. It was a two day course that was more of an overview of the information than a teaching session. I work on a floor with very sick patients, but we rarely have a code situation. I wanted to take ACLS in order to feel more comfortable when a code does take place. If I had not done as much preparation before the course as I did, I doubt I would have passed. This book helped me immensely to prepare for the class and understand all the information needed. Deffinately get this book before the classes take place, because there is so much information in the study guide and you don't want to go into information overload. As far as I know, this book contains the most up to date information from the ACLS authorities. Get this book and Dale Dubin's "Rapid Interpretation of EKGs" for your next ACLS course, especially if it is the first time you're taking it. Good Luck!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Sorry. so so
If you are senior resident or higher in emergency medicine or internal medicine, this books seems to be too superficial for you. And most importantly it didn't reflect fully 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG'- milestone in the resuscitation medicine: various opinions, arguement and final consensus on the basic life support, newly changed tachycardia algorithm, management of atrial fibrillation, amiodarone in pulseless VT,VF and so on- in you wanna see more exactly, do 'guidelines 2000 for CPR and ECG' and annals of emergency medicine appendix booklet printed in 2000. all that changed will affect and change text sooner . but on the other hand, this book has nice advantages - easily readable and well-organized, detail explanation of pitfall and pearl in basic life support and good discussion themes and self-test question. Recommend for starter , ACLS instructor (manual) or physician not related with resuscitation field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than the AHA book
I am an ACLS and ACLS-EP instructor and highly recommend this book. Much more details than the AHA textbook, has an index, and is well written. Actually has a picture of WPW arrythmias, discusses Cardiac Glycosides as well as other things that an effective clinician needs to know. Honestly, if the AHA would let us, I would use this as the text instead of the official one. Unlike the official text this one is clear, has EKG's, and is helpful. If you are teaching ACLS this text is a MUST. If you are taking, this text is extremely helpful. If you have this, and read this, you will do much better than the rest of the class when it is time to test.
If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would give it a 7. (The AHA textbook is a 2)

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplement to the AHA ACLS provider manual
I bought this book because the AHA book just didn't have enough info for me. This book is very easy to read and gives tons of information which really helps put the total ACLS picture together. If you plan on taking ACLS or just want to know more about the hear this is a great book to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent ACLS resource
I'm a SICU nurse and I highly recommend Ms. Aehlert's book. It is by far the best book you will find on the market that will get you ready for ACLS. It's much better than the AHA course book for ACLS. This is an excellent resource and has now become an indispensable part of my reference library. I'm not a novice; I just completed my 4th ACLS class with excellent results, thanks to this book. Buy it before you take ACLS and you will not be disappointed. ... Read more

Detailed lesion descriptions and over 300 photographs and diagrams facilitate disease recognition and each condition is placed in context with discussion of its history, antiquity, etiology, epidemiology, geography, and natural history. 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful reference on botanical safety
This book vastly improves on the 1st edition, which had some questionable listings of various herbs, the basis of which are now explained. Overall this book covers a lot of herbs in rational categories and references everything. I have used it as a textbook in my drug-herb interactions courses and students have consistently found it a handy reference. Excellent work from a true botanical scholar. The only flaw is a tendency to extrapolate too much from in vitro work while occasionally failing to cite relevant human literature, and a tendency to ignore beneficial interactions in favor of citing negative ones (understandable but it gives a somewhat false impression).

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have to save your life
I know that my review title may seem dramatic, but I have personal knowledge of supplements endangering a loved one's life.
My sister-in-law's mother is extremely into natural supplements, BUT she would only read the gushing, wonderful benefits described by those who promote the supplements. She gave her 75 year-old husband a supplement, which in and of itself would be okay. BUT, the poor guy was on prescription medicine which adversely mixed with the simple supplement. He was admitted to hospital and was critical all due to the mix.

SO, IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE, ENSURE THAT YOU VERIFY THAT YOUR NATURAL SUPPLEMENT ARE NOT CONTRAINDICATED PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES.

This book is a LIFE-SAVER in that respect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reference for both physician and home use
This is a much-needed and very usable reference for the health professional and educated lay person alike. While natural substances are generally very safe, it's important for both physician and patient to be aware that there are potentially serious effects from using certain herbals along with prescription drugs. As a Doctor of Naturopathy, I refer to this book often.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great home care reference
Admitting a patient to homecare...I have a list of prescribed Rx's BUT THE PT ALSO TAKES SEVERAL (OR MORE!) herbals which can have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the prescribed meds. This book has already helped..now I have a clue as to why the Coumadin therapy either isn't working as it should or is acting too too powerfully. The Doc's I call are interested in the references as this is new ground for them as well. I keep it in my car to use when instructing pts about their medications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, but a little too detailed
This IS the most comprehensive drug information resource. The monographs are very detailed, and organized in a logical manner. Because it is SO inclusive, we use it as a back up and not on the front line. At times, it can be too cumbersome when you need a quick reference. However, it is a must for every pharmacist to have as a complete source to check and double check.

The DI Essentials is a great alternative for a quicker, more easy to use reference for front line pharmacists, physicians, and nursing staff.

This is a "must have" text for any student of medicine. It has all the information one needs for ward rounds, presentations, and exams. Medicine is an ever-evolving field and this book keeps up with all the latest developments. The references are conveniently given at the end of each section so the student can easily look up the most relevant articles. I especially like the "Essentials of Diagnosis" that precedes each disease entity and summarizes the key points. However this book is very much clinical/management-oriented. It does not have pictures/slides nor does it cover pathophysiology (for that, Harrison's is a better book).

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Thorough
Current Medicine is right up there among the top few reference books. It has excellent chapters in Cardiology, Infectious diseases and Respiratory medicine. One of the key features is the references of the latest articles at the end of every topic that is covered. This is book is worth every cent that is spent to buy it, a truly productive investment of time and money....a must buy for students who want to ace their exams.

5-0 out of 5 stars Current Medical Diagnoses and Treatment 2003
This book packs in all the important aspects of client treatment into each section. The headings are a little hard to see when skimming, but the information is excellent. A must have for Nurse Practitioner school!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best!
Very concise, covering a large number of conditions with information about clinical features, diagnosis and treatment... just the best medical book for students, residents and general prationers.

Book Description

Until now, there hasn't been a single, authoritative work that clarifies and informs the lay reader about advances in the practice of modern medicine. The American Medical Association Encyclopedia of Medicine, in filling that need, proves itself the definitive source of knowledge and reassurance for every American home. In short, it is a medical information powerhouse, written in jargon-free language by a special team of medical writers and presented in an exceptionally usable A-to-Z format -- the most thorough and up-to-the-minute medical reference text yet prepared for the general American public, as well as for libraries and schools.

It's unique subject coverage includes: new drugs; special tests; common, rare, and recently-identified diseases, disorders and conditions; state-of-the-art surgical procedures; conflicting or varying opinions; the translation of esoteric terminology -- all complex areas of contemporary medicine that may prove confusing to anyone, even when consulting a physician.

The broad scope of The American Medical Association Encyclopedia of Medicine encompasses:

*Over 5,000 entries with 2,200 illustrations.
*Medical terms defined in clear, easy-to-understand language alphabetically arranged.
*Listings of 2,200 common and uncommon disorders, diseases, conditions and cures; over 300 symptoms; 2,500 drugs -- in generic, brand-name and major groupings; 600 tests, procedures and surgical operations.
*Illustrated features on the anatomy of the body's organs and systems.
*Four-color introductory section, offering an overview of the latest advances in diagnosis, healing and curing.
*Anatomically-correct drawings, X rays, specialists' photographs and charts, diagrams and scans.
*Extensive cross-referencing within articles to their main entries, "see alsos" for further information, and "signpost" articles to give overviews of certain subjects.
*General index to main entries, sub-entries and illustrations.

The American Medical Association Encyclopedia of Medicine is, along with the diagnostically oriented AMA Family Medical Guide and the specialized, comprehensive AMA Guide to Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drugs, an authoritative major component of The American Medical Association Home Reference Library, the distinguished series that belongs in every home.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comparison with other medical encyclopias
Compared with the AMA Family Medical Guide, this text is easier to use, because of A-Z arrangement; more thorough, because it has more text, fewer illustrations--although its many illustrations are a definite plus; and more advanced, that is, with less information on general medical education. Both are 5-stars: which you buy depends on what your purposes are. If you want a medical reference book for general use, for instance, the encylopedia would probably be better; if you want it for family care, the guide would probably be better. Both the guide and encylopedia can be compared usefully with the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons Complete Home Medical Guide. This is also 5 stars. It is arranged differently from both the AMA books--more a guide than an A-Z arrangement, however--and its authorship is also different: articles are written by separate authors, top authorities in their fields, instead of by a general editor. This has certain advantages and disadvantages, from the point of view of coverage, and, in general, it makes for a more advanced text, although it is still broad and readable for the college-educated public. Another important difference between the Columbia guide and both AMA texts is that the Columbia guide includes a great many more references to outside sources: for instance, it lists hospitals that are certified for the treatment of various conditions, poison control centers in states, associations that focus on research and treatment for various diseases; it also includes more bibliographic material throughout. The Columbia guide could be used to supplement both the AMA texts, or used by itself. It certainly should not be allowed to go out of print.

5-0 out of 5 stars The American Medical Association Encyclopedia Of Medicine
This was a very informative book. It will help me a great deal in adding to my collection of medical reference books for my medical transcription career. The price was also a fair price for the information contained inside.

2-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Too Old
I didn't realize that this book has not been updated since its copyright--1989. The date of information probably is 1988 or earlier. While this book is clear and well-organized, anything that's 14 years old has little credibility with me. I feel that I made a mistake in getting it.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMA Enclopedia of Medicine
I have loved this book since I purchased in 1990. I have gone to it over and over again. The only problem I have with it is....It is rather outdated. My husband has Hepatitis C. That wasn't even know back there. It was Non A and Non B!! Time they updated their wonderful book. Any information about this? Thanks very much

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference; would like an update!
I have turned to this encyclopedia again and again over the last 10 years and have found it to be an excellent resouce to help guide me through medical problems. It is a concise and clear guide. However, I'd love an updated version! ... Read more
