A must have for any Nursing student
I can't tell you how invaluable this book is to me. It is safe to say I would be lost without it. I am in a bridge nursing program (RN-Masters) and have never worked in the medical feild before. Upper division textbooks are usually unhelpful because they contain no glossary at the back of the book. If your books are the same way this book is a necessity!

Definitions are in plain english rather than crazy medical jargon so you rarely have to filp pages to define words in the definition of the original word in question. Even better are the multitude of pictures and diagrams that really solidify your understanding of select terms.

There are some additional niceties specifially for nurses or nursing students. The appendix is filled with useful nursing guides such as:
1. Nutrition and dietary refrence values
2. Herbal medicines and their uses
3. Normal refrence laboratory values
4. Prefixes and suffixes
5. Latin and Greek nomenclature
6. Medical abbreviations
7. Units of measurement
8. Mini English-Spanish-French dictionary inclusive of specific medical phrases that may be used on the job
9. Classification of poisons and poisoning, including pathology, symptoms, and medical treatment
10. Addresses for health care resources and organizations, and nursing organizations
11. NIC and NOC lists
12. Nursing diagnosis
13. Conceptual models and theories of nursing

Those additional resources alone are worth the price of this book. You may be on a tight budget, but this is one book you cannot afford to be without.

Indispensable for Professionals, Students, & Laypeople
This dictionary has enough information to be useful for even the most learned medical professional and is still simple enough to use to be accessible to any mildly educated member of society. The dictionary is much more than simply a dictionary. Consisting of the vocabulary section and then some appendices, this 2270-page godsend is chockfull of definitions, examples, full-color diagrams, charts, diagnoses, and more. The preface to the dictionary actually lists all of the features of this cyclopedic dictionary, so I will regurgitate it here:

The book comes with a trial subscription to Taber's Online. This is my only complaint. Taber's Online does not appear to have received the thorough thought that the printed version did. I found that it was generally unhelpful, but you don't have to pay any extra for it, so I'm not complaining, just commenting. Overall, I would strongly recommend buying the Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary.

who needs a dictionary
THIS DICTIONARY WAS OKAY. I BOUGHT IT AS A MEDICAL STUDENT THINKING IT WOULD BE USEFUL, IT WAS NOT. I GUESS IT WOULD BE USEFUL FOR PEOPLE OUT OF THE MEDICAL FIELD WHO WANT TO LOOK SOMETHING UP BUT WAS NOT USEFUL FOR ME.

A useful and comprehensive resource
I used this dictionary for many courses in the allied health discipline. I especially liked the way the dictionary categorized diseases by etiology, symptoms, course, and treatment. The appendices and illustrations were useful as well. One drawback to the dictionary is that some of the terms are hard to find; sometimes, one must flip back and forth while it leads you on a wild goose chase. As a whole, Taber's is an excellent pick for anyone choosing health as a clinical practice.

Couldn't be better
This book is a must have for new medical students. In the first 2 yrs of nedical school you will be hit with zillions of new tems and this dictionary is small and complete. A style manual you will rarely close
The specific goal of the American Medical Association Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors is to codify and collect the myriad instructions, rules, and dictums that AMA applies to the many journals, books, and other publications that are printed under its imprint. The more general goal, perhaps not stated, is to broaden the influence of those standards so they encompass more of the medical publishing community.

The book, developed by a committee of writers, editors, and publishers, is organized around five major categories, Preparing an Article for Publication, Style, Terminology, Measurement and Quantitation, and Technical Information. Each of these categories is, in turn, broken down into chapters that probe various aspects of each category. Finding information is easy, and the writers have used examples generously to make the points clear.

The first section, Preparing an Article for Publication, is, naturally slanted more toward authors and those who toil to prepare author's manuscripts for publication. There are many guidelines offering advice that ranges from preparing the abstract to preparing any of six different types of acknowledgments. Editors and copy editors would do well to review this chapter as well. The section on citing Web sites alone is crucial reading.

I suspect, but cannot prove, that many researchers will not read deeply beyond the opening chapter, feeling that the remaining sections are more the province of copy editors and journal editors. Perhaps there is some merit to that line of thinking, but all authors in the medical sciences would benefit from the copious advice here, and the better writers, I'm sure, do follow the principles of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and usage set forth in the section on style. Common mistakes, such as confusing case and patient, redundancies, and the ever so ticklish topic of race/ethnicity are some of the many points discussed thoroughly.

The section on terminology is so mind-bogglingly detailed that all one can hope to do is remember that the AMA Style Guide will almost always have the answer if you have a question about an abbreviation (how many times is something mistakenly called an acronym instead of an initialism?), medical nomenclature (a huge chapter that is the heart of the book), or eponyms (which, thanks to this guide may now be a topic we can quit haggling over).

Measurement and Quantitation continue to be a bane for many writers and editors, though without delving too much into specifics, let's say that this section will answer most questions but not without careful reading and perhaps a look at the Chicago Manual of Style for a bit clearer presentation on this topic. The chapter on statistics, unique to this guide, notes how to express confidence intervals, confirms that the word Student in Student t test is capitalized (sorry, but this text editor on Amazon.com does not display the italic t), provides a list of statistical symbols and abbreviations, and offers valuable tips about displaying equations. And those examples barely hint at the wealth of information here.

A final section on technical information provides a thumbnail guide to good layout and design of printed materials, worthy sets both of copyediting marks and proofreading marks (which are no doubt often photocopied and posted in a visible location), an excellent primer on how to edit hard copy, and a glossary of publishing terms.

If you are a medical writer or editor, odds are that you already either have a copy of this guide or you borrow one from a colleague. If you are an aspiring medical communicator, you will need your own copy so you can mark in it, attach tabs, and leave open on your desk.

Meets my needs
I imagine there may be a better thesaurus out there somewhere, but this one meets my everyday needs just fine.

Merriam-Webster disappoints for once
This will do if you only use a thesaurus occasionally but it won't do for the rest of us. The usually superlative Merriam-Webster product line missed the beat with this one. Although Roget's is a bit more time consuming to use, it is infinitely more rewarding than this volume. I was very disappointed at the small number of synonyms found for each entry in Merriam. In Roget, you can easily find many words that differ by only the slightest and most subtle shade of meaning. In this book, if it isn't an exact match, you won't know about it. I also saw no point to including antonyms in a thesaurus. I would have preferred many more synonyms included in the space used for antonyms.

THE single best tool to improve your writing
Most other dictionary-format thesauri (Roget’s II, for instance) simply won’t give you what you want on the first try. If, for instance, you want a more decorous word for “smelly” you’re brusquely told to “see MALODOROUS”. This means that most of the words you are likely to be looking up require a time-wasting two step process: first find the word you want to replace, then find the main entry for that concept. By the time you’ve finished flipping back and forth through the pages you’ve forgotten what it is your looking for.

The Webster’s version is a thousand times more convenient. If you look up a specific word you’re guaranteed to find about a dozen or so of the most common synonyms right there (funky, stinky, rank, etc.). This first entry is probably all you’ll need and it constitutes the main time-saving benefit of this edition. But there’s more. The real verbomaniacs among us get referred to the main entry of the concept. Here you’ll find the mother lode of words, often numbering into the dozens and ranging from the most commonplace to the ridiculously obscure (e.g. mephitic, olid, or stenchful). You’ll also find related terms (vile, rotten, pestilential), contrasting terms (deoderized, fresh, clean), and antonyms (fragrent, sweet) all in the same place, just as you would in Roget’s conceptually arranged International edition. Like I said, most writers are sure to find what they need on the first try.

The only other thesaurus that approaches this one is the Random House Collegiate, but I don’t think that one has definitions; this one does. I’m also pretty sure this one has more words than Random House, Roget’s 21st Century, or any other.

Don't waste your time
This book is too verbose, painful to read, out of date, and will simply gain dust on your bookshelf until you finally throw it away. Don't waste your money on this piece of junk. As worthless as the MEDEX program Ballweg heads, I'd say.

Great Drug Guide!
I am a 3rd semester nursing student and I absolutely love this drug guide. I have used others before, but this one is the best. It has the best IV drug administration info. It has side effects listed as the most life threatening in bold, and the most frequent in underlines. That makes it easy to wade through all of the possible side effects to the most likely and the most threatening that you may need to know for patient care and, of course, when getting quized by clinical instructors :) When my friends can't find a drug or a detail about administration they always ask for my book or my PDA (i have this version on my PDA also). This is the best drug book I have seen; it also has nursing diagnoses and great patient teaching instructions.

Davis's Drug guide report from the field
Im currently a RN student and many of the students in my class including myself use this book. I've actually used 3 different brands but this book stands above all. It lets the reader know important points about the drugs and does not confuse as some of the other books have done w/elaborate terminology. Davis keeps it simple and its well designed. Software isn't bad as well but I find myself using the book more often when I look up the drugs.

Getting out of date every day - Not a Mac CD
I use this in nursing school and am finding a new edition is needed. Many new drugs commonly used are not in this eighth edition. I also am disappointed that they advertise the CD rom as Windows or Mac - clearly not usable in the Macintosh. :(

This is the only drug book you will need
I have bought four different drug books since I began nursing school ...I sold the other three after I started using this one.
The disc is great for finding information for clinicals....and plan on keeping it after I graduate....well done!

I teach nursing, and this DAVIS Drug Guide for Nurses is a must-have for all my students as they learn how to professionally administer medications to their clients.
All nurses should have a convenient system to use when the occasion arises that a nurse gives a medication that they are unfamilair with...I found that this DAVIS Guide is a quick and easy way to investigate the medication, it's indications, contraindications, nursing considerations and idiosyncrasies. Adverse reactions and normal dosing ranges are included for all medications .....
There is also caution advised to prevent medication errors....near misses are always preferred over real errors any day. How the heart skips a beat whenever that happens!
Nurses NEVER intend to make errors, and this book gives a cautionary tale in the beginning - to help professionals understand the grave seriousness of it all.
It's never too late to buy an informative drug guide, and here I recommend this book to ALL --- professional or not.
It's cruicial that all people who give medications or take them understand the actions of the medications comprehensively.

great books!
Some 15 years ago, I bought the 54 volume version of the great books of the western civilization -and spent ten years reading them (aside from making a living and raising two children). These books have affected my life in various ways, all very positive I believe. If my comment can at least encourage one person in the world to go ahead and read this extraordinary collection, I would be very happy. The publishers have been wise in avoiding footnotes and erudite biographical notes, and of course, in the selection of the works. R Roose from Mexico City

A Reasonable Investment
My brother bought this collection when we were eight - a ridiculous request to any parent, undoubtedly - but whatever their reasons it still rests with us today, well-thumbed, especially the Syntopicons. The beauty of this collection is that it's a good introduction to aesthetics, to history and western thought. It generally captures the milestones - big or small - that permeates in influence over the world today. In America there is a growing redudancy to Freud, and Darwin relies on its PRs, extentionists who carry on his legacy in different colors. These are just some superficial examples. The only danger is that the reader may have to take a lot of effort in seeing how it has evolved and been adapted - to update themselves and not get caught with the raw material. as we grow up ( I'm eighteen now, my brother twenty one ) we still find it profound and delightful, and as we read, we learn to respect it more, we grow to liking it, like a blur picture that slowly comes into focus as the years unravel. It was a juvenile effort to cram such intellectual backbones before we hit puberty - but it doesn't come to any loss. The only problem I have with it is that it is in its core text, without much explanation besides the Syntopicon and a book that accompanies it ( timelines, etc) and I think they overlook some great people, like John Donne and include some ideas that are rather diluted in application today, like Spinoza. Of course, that's in my humble opinion, and well - it's debatable among the academias. It's a good book, with patience and some commitment it's rewarding, I'm sure.

good start...
I used this set of books to cure myself of various dimensions of my own illiteracy.

Suffering from a lack, perhaps, of desirable introductions featured in other editions of the same works, the consistency of printed style makes it slightly more accessible for a serious reader. The overall aesthetics of the set may add to speed and comprehension.

I would not necessarily, however, read every word : page thru, and see what catches your eye ...

... and add such readings as Joyce's ULYSSES, FINNEGAN'S WAKE, Prousts' REMEMBRANCE, and Musil's MAN WITHOUT QUALITIES. Great Books lists abound. . .

...of course, one ought not to stop there . . . supplement your "great books" with the "missing features" included in Dr.Eliots' earlier five foot shelf of Harvard Classics.

... any student lavishing several hours on each of the classic volumes included in these sets would be well-prepared, to a considerable extent, for any college curriculum. The best medical dictionary.
Dorland's and Stedman's are the two premier medical dictionaries. Any physician or other person who requires frequent reference to medical definitions should probably own both (I do). Both books have occasional errors; each book has terms that the other lacks; and each book has some definitions that are superior to the those in the other. However, if you purchase only one, I recommend Dorland's. In my opinion, Dorland's has definitions for more terms, better definitions and fewer errors.

Dorland's: a big disappointment
As a medical textbook author, I felt a need to add Dorland's to my increasing collection of medical dictionaries, so I ordered a copy from Amazon.com. Now that I have used it for a couple of weeks, I can remember why I chose Stedman's back when my budget was more limited and I compared the two dictionaries with an eye to buying just one of them. I am repeatedly disappointed when I look up terms in Dorland's. Pronunciations are often lacking (e.g., for the cranial foramina and skeletal muscles), the illustrations are meager and inferior to Stedman's, and many terms are missing. Dorland's doesn't even define first-, second-, and third-degree burns, for example, and the levator labii superioris muscle and levator labii superioris alaeque nasi are completely missing from both the body of the dictionary and the appendix of muscle tables. Such omissions reflect either inexcusable carelessness or inexplicable editorial caprice. A professional writer or physician should have Dorland's on hand as a backup source. I find it useful for corroborating some facts and getting alternative meanings of words. But I still go to Stedman's as my first resort; it does a far better job. For a student or professional person with budget for just one good medical dictionary, I recommend Stedman's or the more economical but very good Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary.

The 30th edition of Dorland's is a real delight.
I'm not in a position to criticize anyone who prefers Mosby's or Stedman's dictionaries; however I have used all three and found the 30th ed. of Dorland's to be my personal favorite.

1. Anyone who uses books regularly knows the importance of a dictionary's binding and printing. Dorland's has a beautiful layout, easy-to-read font, and subtle and effective illustrations. The paper is top quality, and few books these days are so well bound. The book stays open at any page and when shut feels like a brick. The binding doesn't flex and the pages don't sag.

2. I am not a specialist, but I haven't found any word from a medical textbook that wasn't easy to locate and very well defined. The quality of the illustrations is really striking--particularly for anatomical terms. I find an excess of pictures and photographs distracting in a dictionary, and Dorland's are always well-chosen and relevant.

3. The CD-ROM/registration code is a nice plus. I can't comment on the PDA feature, but the access to the internet version of Dorland's is an incredible time saver if one happens to be working at the computer.

I love this dictionary. If I had time I'd read it cover to cover. The only downside is the size. There's definitely a place for Taber's or some other compact dictionary for travel, etc.

P.S.-- Thanks to Ken Saladin for his excellent critical review. The editors at Dorland's must have been listening too, since the 30th edition has all the terms he listed as missing (and hopefully others as well!)

Must Have Reference
This dictionary is a must have reference for anybody working in a health profession or related field. I've been using it since I began medical school, and there have been extremely few occasions when a word that I don't know or need to spell has not been listed. It's thorough, concise, and easy to use. Highly reccomended for beginners and experts alike.

Dorland's - Keystone for transcription!
If you are a medical transcriptionist or just a family looking for ONE good medical journal to keep in your house (that is IF you have at least a nursing or transcription background) the Dorland's is your book! While all the other books go out of date every year to year and a half, the Dorland's is the Standard that DOESN'T! Buy it and see why even though they update the Dorland's every few years, even doctors keep their old Dorland's from medical school for years and years without updating! It's the best around! Practical Guide to Natural Medicines is better!
I'm a former practicing pharmacist, now a health promotion educator who must, for my lectures, keep up to date on the rapidly emerging information (peer reviewed research & commercial publications, internet, etc.) about medicinals, vitamins, minerals, supplements, herbs, natural remedies, etc. available to public with and without a prescription. My goal is to ferret out fact from fiction. I believe THE AMERICAN PHARMACEUTICAL ASSOCIATION PRACTICAL GUIDE TO NATURAL MEDICINES is a MUCH BETTER (a FIVE star) resource--especially since it's a 1999 publication that cites sources including German monographs that are basis of PDR. The description of APA Guide, on Amazon.com, does not do this book justice. Once I got PRACTICAL GUIDE TO NATURAL MEDICINES I no longer used PDR.

PDR for Herbal Medicines
I just received this book. I'm a family physician and I get lot of questions about herbal products. This is the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference source on herbal medicines. I found infromation on new interactions between St. John Wort and cyclosporine, AIDS drugs, and others. I would strongly recommend other physicians to get this book.

This was published by Medical Economics and no author is listed. If you're a true herbalist, expect this book to be slanted to the drug cartel's viewpoint.

Andrew Bentley (Alfalfa and Buckwheat) aptly pointed out that info is left out and it says some data is not available, but it is.

Jerry Cott in his review points out their report on St. John's Wort. Do you really think this was not done on purpose? Imagine the dollars lost if people stopped taking the drugs that this herb will sometimes help.

Be sure to read what the pharmacist said. I applaud you as your lively hood depends on this type of manipulation of the truth.

Best Herbal Reference
This is the most complete reference for herbal medicines that I have seen.It contains many common names as well as Latin names. Being a Certified Pharmacy Technician for 15 years this is a must have. There are probably 100 questions a month on what the side effects and interactions are of various herbal medicines. It is an invaluable reference guide for all pharmacies!

Pdr has produced a benchmark!
Haven previosuly used herbal medicines, and being an inqusitive person by nature, I simply had to examine this reference work, i.e., PDR for Herbal Medicines (1st Ed). What Pdr has accomplished is no small feat. They have taken the most used and common herbal medecines and put them all in one vollume. Want to find out about St. Johns Wort and its effects and side effects. Then this source is the right answer and it will supply the answer. very handy manual
i found your book excellent in bedside procedures and normal values but unfortunately i have not found enough guides in clinical pictures (diagnosis)and full investigations for separate disease entities to help in query bizzare clinical presentations in our wards

Great reference book
I highly recommend this text for third year medical students. It properly assumes that the third year medical student knows next to nothing about clinical medicine and proceeds to explain abbreviations, commonly used drugs, procedures, protocols on rounds, and a whole host of useful things needed to survive and thrive in the hospital setting. I used it not only in medical school, but during my residency as well (especially during the first two years), especially when learning critical care medicine. Definitely shell out a few bucks and buy this book before you start your clinical rotations during medical school.

A great little reference book
As a case manager for people who have serious mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders, I like this smaller, handy guide to the cumbersome DSM-IV. It covers the basics without going into nitpicking detail. I use it instead of the regular DSM-IV. If I need the regular DSM-IV, then I borrow a co-worker's. But for me, this is much better reading, more concise, and, best of all, takes up less desk space!

Too Verbose and Unorganized for Medical School
The book is disjointed and doesn't do a good job explaining the pathways- especially when you get to the Cranial Nerves. I agree with the other medical student reviewing this book- too verbose and way too confusing for most medical students. I think professors like to believe it's a good book b/c it goes into laborious details. However, neuro is hard enough without. I wouldn't waste my time b/c you will get more confused simply trying to read the book! Stick woth the notes and a concise study guide.

Great writing style
This was a great source, not as a formal neuroanatomy text, but for an understanding of clinical cases. It has great illustrations, is extremely well-organized, and the writing is not cluttered with anatomical connections. Lastly, the details of the neurological and mental status exams were helpful.

Neuroanatomy through clinical cases
I have used this book for the clinical medicine portion of my Neuroscience course. It is excellently written and provides explicit memorable clinical examples and casefindings useful for the medical student or resident. A companion web site guides the student though all aspects of the neurological exam by media presentations and examples. I highly recommend the use of this text for Neuroanatomy and Neurology review.

Well Organized and Illustrated. Simply An Exceptional Text.
Every once in a while a special textbook comes along that makes a subject an utter delight to learn; "Neuroanatomy Through Clinical Cases" is most definitely such a text. The merits of this book are just too many to enumerate but I will provide some specific examples of its strengths.

The book has great detail but the strength of its organization is what makes this aspect an asset rather than a liability. Most chapters have a 'Brief Anatomical Study Guide' at the beginning that rivals the content of most traditional Neuroanatomy texts. These sections are well illustrated with great descriptions. Furthermore this traditional approach is clearly delineated from the clinical content in the chapter which is marked with 'KCC' (Key Clinical Concept). Every clinical point in my Neuroscience course was covered in this book making it an invaluable resource for clarification. Sure there is WAY more clinical content in the book than in my course but because the sections are marked clearly it's easy to find specific vignettes. Each chapter ends with specific clinical problems that are discussed in full with ample radiographic images. The clinical cases for me served to test, clarify and reinforce the material presented in the brief anatomical study guide. They are no doubt the most 'fun' part of the book (thinking in Med School...OMG!!).

Overall, rather than read through the same material trying to memorize (ala syllabus), going through the brief guide then the clinical concepts and finally the problems provided the necessary repetition yet also allowed for an innovative and engaging approach to learning.

The author should really be applauded for his diligence and enthusiasm, it truly is infectious. The presence of numerous mnemonics and analogies (eg/ The Putamen-Globus Palladus ice cream cone analogy) show the type of effort and commitment to teaching that students crave. Also I really liked the bold highlighting of certain key words and phrases, it makes it so much easier to review. Simply by reading the bold terms and the surrounding text much of the key material can be assimilated (good for the Boards).

Our assigned text was Nolte which is a great ATLAS (not much more) but this is an exemplary TEXT. The many illustrations in Blumenfeld's book emphasized concepts and were structured to be high yield. Nolte had more gross specimens and slides. So I used Blumenfeld exclusively for the written and the Nolte atlas (not the text!) for lab.

Excellent book - But it could use a "cosmetic" update
Good subject coverage, knowledgeable author, and plenty of uncluttered figures makes this book very worthwhile. The only thing missing from this excellent book is an update. Although this is the third edition (1998), almost all of the equipment photographs are from the early-to-mid 1970's. An extensive and broad Suggested Reading section follows most chapters but again far far too many references are to early 1970's books and manuals. An update could earn this book a 5+ rating. ... Not quite what I expected
Zollinger's features very good illustrations and notes (including postoperative care) for nearly every imaginable procedure in gastrointestinal surgery (including exotic and complex operations such as total pancreatectomy and Klatskin tumor resections), short of bariatric surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, fundoplication and splenectomy are covered as well.

However, information is sorely lacking on breast surgery (all we get are descriptions of modified radical mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy; useful, but no mention of conservative breast surgery), head and neck surgery (limited to near-total thyroidectomy and radical neck dissection) and thoracic surgery (posterolateral thoracotomy and that's it). No information *at all* on urology (as a resident, I'd gladly trade my plates on total pancreatectomy for a few on nephrectomy, nephrostomy and cystostomy). Gynecologic and vascular procedures are adequately covered.

In my copy, there is nothing on page 391 (Plate CLXXXIII on posterolateral thoracotomy is blank).

So, as a resident, Zollinger's won't be quite as useful as I expected, given the limited range of non-gastrointestinal general surgical procedures covered. However, I suspect I will make good use of its excellent in-depth coverage of gastrointestinal surgery.

Truely one of the most successful books of the kind, the strucure is well designed, the operations included cover a eide range of procedures, and most noticeble is the very high quality of the explanatory figures, sometimes by just brawsing through them you get 80% of what to do... the text is well written and concise. You will find many approaches for each operation. of course it will be impossible to gather all the surgical craft in one book. but this one succeeds in collecting a large chunk of it. i highly recommend it for all juniors and postgrads alike. ... Cancer can now be cured, not just treated

We are not accustomed to thinking about a cure for cancer. We think of remission as the only possibility. But this book is not about remission. It is about a cure. This is possible because in 1990 Dr. Clark discovered the true cause of cancer. The cause is a certain parasite, for which I have found evidence in every cancer case regardless of the type of cancer. So lung cancer is not caused by smoking, colon cancer is not caused by a low roughage diet, breast cancer is not caused by a fatty diet, retinal blastoma is not caused b y a rare gene, and pancreatic cancer is not caused by alcohol consumption. Although these are all contributing factors, they are not THE cause. Once the true cause was found the cure became obvious. but would it work? I set a goal of 100 cases to be cured of cancer before publishing my findings. Clarks book gives what she claims is a cure for cancer. However, the book must be read carefully to make sure that one is getting the full meaning of what she is saying. Her approach is a herbal and bioelectric one. But this is not new. After reading the mixed reviews all I can say is that one is better off experimenting himself. Some criticize this book claiming that if such a cure were found Clark would be lauded by the world and the medical community. This is false and a fallacy from the argument of authority. One must go by evidence and nothing else. Many geniuses and note worthy discoveries have been ignored, without investigation. The history of science is full of examples. The author deserves to be heard, since in the search for truth nothing can be discarded, but investigated as completely as possible. Sadly, this is not the case with much of scientific research. One must investigate things himself and Dr. Clark gives people the oppurtunity to do so.

Think outside the square
Yes, I have read the book. No, I have not had cancer - simply an interest in herbal medicine & simple therapies that can be easily and cheaply applied by those who love someone who is suffering.

People have said that the names in case studies have been changed so it is difficult to follow up (insinuating perhaps these 'case studies' are not real people?). I regard this complaint as minor - what book with case studies DOESN'T change the names to protect privacy?

I read the book & found it very interesting - I guess I wonder what would be found out if the regular researchers (eg unis etc) spent only 1/20 of the amount they spend on developing new technology in simply researching (with an open mind) what Hulda proposes. But just imagine if it was found that what she says is true! They would all be out of a job! No more research needed - just the ability to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health by following some simple steps.
My thoughts were - the causes really do seem plausible enough. And I know that if I were diagnosed with cancer I would be more than willing to spend a few dollars on some herbs to follow the program before proceeding with western hit or miss approaches. I guess when you read a testimony of someone who says "I" or "My mother" had cancer, followed the program & got well... what more can you say? Two or three witnesses should be listened to - usually ordinary people, they have nothing to gain or lose from their testimony - no profit, no glory. Can you say the same for others who speak against Hulda's findings?

I thought I would comment on this book after reading the dismisals of it as a quacky hoax. True, Dr. Clark makes very strong claims that sound weird to the western mind that is used to alopathic medicine ruling our lives, but I think that if you're in a desparate situation and 'normal' medical procedures aren't helping you, you'd be a little dumb to not at least be willing to learn about other lines of thought. When I first started reading Dr. Hulda's theories, I also thought she was just paranoid and trying to tell you that you everything was dangerous. But when you have no other alternatives, you start to be willing to try things you once thought were ridiculous. I can, however, affirm the validity of many of her ideas that resonate with common-knowledge nutrition and herbology. Also, bioelectric testing is definitely not her idea-- it's being widely practiced in Europe and I have witnessed its reliability on myself. A natropathic doctor used it to correctly diagnose and then treat various viruses that I had that were not appearing in normal bloodwork (as often is the case) and symptoms cleared up. All this to say, don't write off something that sounds strange without being open-minded enough to try it yourself. Notice that the reviewers who had loads of negative things to say didn't say they'd actually tried these things themselves.

The Most Irresponsible Book I Have Ever Read
Although I believe that alternative forms of medicine should not be dismissed out of hand, this book provides no useful documentation on its results at all. The book claims that all cancers are caused by a parasitic worm which can be killed with a simple home-made contraption. Although I thought the claim was far-fetched, I was interested to read the patient's histories.

Given the medical histories in the book, it's impossible to say that there is any truth to the claims. In most cases, the author does not verify that the tumors have shrunken or gone away using an ultrasound or MRI or biopsy. The only way she tests for a "cure" is using a machine of her own design. The purpose of the machine is to test for a chemical created by the parasitic worm. If the chemical is not there, then the author declares the patient cured without checking to see if the tumor is gone or receding. This lack of independent verification is completely unforgiveable.

On top of that in all of the case histories, there are no long term follow-ups with the patients. In fact, some of the patients are monitored for just a few days and declared as cured. We really do not know if the patients are cured and healthy or dead; they are not followed after their therapy with the author.

I believe that this book is nothing more than a hoax to capitalize on people who are in desperate circumstances. If you are a cancer victim, ask yourself if you want to pin your hopes on someone who will declare you cured without even checking if your tumor is gone.

Worth Considering
I was so fascinated by this book and The Cure for All Diseases that I completed most of the steps even though I don't have cancer and it doesn't run in my family. I have no idea if the parasite herbs had any effect but the results of the liver cleanse are undeniable: I got rid of over two thousand liver stones (commonly called "gallstones"), most the size of peas and a couple the size of grapes, without surgery. Doctors would tell you this is impossible, but this relatively easy procedure has dramatic results, I highly recommend doing it.

I did the dental cleanup, and I'm really glad I got all that mercury out of my mouth, but it didn't seem to help my depression. The only thing that has helped me is a deep colon cleanse (not in the book), hard work and exercise.

As for the electronic "zapper", I built one, which was kind of fun, and used it, but I really can't say that it had any effect on me, and it failed to shorten the duration of a cold. Her explanation of the synchrometer is science way outside of anything that modern medicine recognizes, but before it is dismissed out of hand, as some of the reviewers here have done, it should be thoroughly tested clinically. Unfortunately that will probably never happen.

By drawing attention to environmental pollution and the ways to avoid it, Dr. Clark points us in the right direction to better overall health. This is an area most doctors totally ignore, when it is easier and more profitable to push pills. 5 Stars to the 10th Power
All I can say is GET THIS BOOK! I wish I had it last semester, but it saved my life for anatomy at the tail end of last semester, and is carrying me through anatomy 2 and the rest of nursing school.

Must have for any medical student.
I'm a nursing student, and I use this book all of the time. Keep it next to you when you study, there are going to be tons of words that you don't know in your studies. Don't be the student that knows the answer but doesn't know what it means.

Mosby's Dictionary
A very handy reference book for anyone in the medical profession. It allows you to find information quickly and answers basic questions about diagnoses, signs and symptoms and medical terms. It is written in clear and concise language. It has colorful and descriptive pictures. I wish I had this in nursing school years ago!! Recently, I've used it as an RN in Home Healthcare practice and as a coding/compliance auditor when reviewing documentation. Overall, it has saved me a lot of time and allowed me to look up details that I didn't know easily. I keep it with me as part of my essential books.

Buy this book if you want to really learn your medical terms
I bought this book as a requirement for an independent study course. I wasn't required to buy the sixth edition but I did just the same and I found I made the right decision. I found the material easy to read with a friendly tone and an extremely useful presentation. The layout of the chapters and the excercises provided helped me to clearly understand, use, and learn the terms. I worked on this book without the aid of a teacher or classroom setting and I feel this book has made the difference between just memorizing material for a later test and really knowing the terms. Also, the CD-ROM that comes with this book made an excellent reference aid and a perfect way to test and reinforce my knowledge. (Clicking on the "figure" button in the multi-media program yielded some interesting surprises) As a result of using this book, I was able to achieve an excellent mark in the Medical Terminology module of my independent study course. I would recommend it to anyone who wants or needs to know their medical terms for any health related field.

Great Way to Learn Medical Terminology
This book by Chabner is designed to help the premedical professional learn terminology by teaching how to break words apart and decode their meaning. Each chapter has a review of a specific topic and provides many opportunities, at the end of each chapter, to practice and review the material covered. The CD is the best part because it helps break up some of the monotony of learning the numerous prefixes, suffixes and word roots. The end of the book provides appendices for medical abbreviations, formulas and measurement. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to learn medical terminology.
