4-0 out of 5 stars Handy pocket guide
I agree with the reviewer from Dec.2003 - the pocket survival guides are not intended to be an authoritative reference on anything, especially not the science of surgery. But in its mission to provide house officers with a useful and quick reference on basic surgical issues, this book succeeds. Very compact & useful to have in your lab coat pocket while on call.

4-0 out of 5 stars A NEAR-PERFECT CHOICE
Stedman's Medical Dictionary is a near-perfect lexicon that should serve the needs of anyone interested in medical language. With it, you are assured of simple but precise definition of terms. Although its biggest shortcoming is having fewer entries than the Dorland's, its colourful illustrative figures are far better than the black and white charts that the Dorland's boast of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have Doctors
As both doctor and founder of a EchoScribe Inc, a leading internet based medical transcription company, (www.echoscribe.com) I must recomend Stedmans as the dictionary that all physicians must own. There is also the PDA version that is also a good carry. It not only provides a quick reference, but in writing medical letters, and transcribing documents, this book is a "medical must have."

5-0 out of 5 stars The most useful dictionary in ur office
I have been using this great dictionary since I joined medical school. Even now as a doctor, I still use it when I'm stuck with a meaning of a medical word. Features include:

- Numerous colored illustrations including ADAM Anatomical Art, new diagnostic plates e.g. imaging and clinical and microscopic plates.
- Common medical abbreviations.
- Highly organized vocabularies.
- Highly organized entries and cross-references.
- Special reference to medical eponyms.
- Shows the difference between British and American spellings.
- Pronunciation key.
- Easy & simple Wordfinder.
- Genus Finder.
- A-Z vocabularies.
- Origins of the medical words e.g. Latin, Greek etc. which attracts me for the most ! Learning the origins of the medical words can be a boon to learning medical language. It makes remembering medical terms easier.
- Appendices including: Table of elements & their atomic weights, Comparative temperature scales, Temperature equivalents, Weights & measures, Symbols, Laboratory reference range values, Blood groups, Diagnosis related groups, Certified Regional Poison Control Centers, CDC Universal Precautions, AIDS - resources (By State), AIDS Hotlines (By State), and AIDS education & training centers (By region).
- 27th Edition comes in 2098 pages, and was published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins company (great company by the way!), 2000.

I wish there could be Stedman's Dictionary on PDA handhelds (e.g. Palm) in the future.
I strongly advise medical students and other health care workers to use this invaluable dictionary. 10/10

5-0 out of 5 stars It's got it all!
Studying pharmacy, I often come across huge medical terms that aren't in my scope of education. I do, however, need to know what they mean right now. Lucky for me, this dictionary is very comprehensive. There is an excellent word finder section and a very useful section on medical abbreviations, common symbols and all kinds of other helpful stuff.
The one drawback to this book is its size. It is a little big and heavy to cart around from school to home but other than that - the perfect assistant!

5-0 out of 5 stars Endless list of medical terms.
This is a great medical dictionary that has every possible medical term. It is 2,000 pages of great illustrations, easy to understand definitions and very complete. You have other medical dictionaries but Stedman's beat them all hands down. You get this medical dictionary, you very likely may not need another. Stedman's will cover all your medical terminology needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
Spanish is my first language. I took classes in medical terminology in Spanish, however, there are times when I just forget a certain word and I resort to this book for help.
This book has helped me translate many teaching materials we use and give to patients in the hospital. I have used this book for many years and will continue to use it.
Highly recomend it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but with problems
I work as a medical interpreter and use this as my main reference tool. I particularly love the anatomical diagrams, and that the dictionary gives regional usage of words. One very serious problem though - when there is more than one option for a translation, the choices are listed in alphabetical order with no consideration for which choice is the most frequently used. So, I might have to try out a number of words before I hit on the one that the patient understands (I'm also studying for a certification exam and have no way of knowing which of several choices is likely to be on the test). It's common practice in dictionaries to list the most commonly used choice first - this would have been much more helpful. I'm currently shopping for another dictionary that doesn't have this problem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Start
The first half of this book is in English, translated to Spanish, under the Alphabet headings. Very good, very concise. The next section is again in English, with medical terminology and the spanish counterpart, diagrams of body systems with Eng-Span conversions, and skeleton. Second half of book is the same as first, only, its Spanish to English. Very helpful book. Good start for someone like me who is just learning the Spanish language.

5-0 out of 5 stars herramienta maravillosa
Se la recomiendo a todos los hispanos que necesiten ayuda para empezar en el mundo de la salud

4-0 out of 5 stars has terms that other dictionaries don't
this is a pretty solid dictionary... i use this as my primary reference as a medical interpreter and translator. it's small enough to carry around in a satchel, but not really a pocket reference... for its size, it lists a number of terms that i did not find in colleagues' dictionaries.
the slang listings are extensive, although not practically useful. most patients are familiar with both slang and some formal description of medical terminology, and so i think that the space they used up here with slang could have been better spent. overall, however, this is a wonderful and accessible volume for health professionals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely Board Specific
I first encountered this book when it was called "Biostatistics for the Boards" when I took the course from Dr. Glaser when he was teaching at the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Glaser was an exceptionally good and popular teacher and the book reflects his "no-nonsense" style. At first I thought it was a "dumbed down" statistics book as I had taken a full year of stats in college and my previous books had been huge and heavy textbooks. However, I soon found that the reason Dr. Glaser's book was so brief was that he concentrates only on the type of concepts and questions you will find on the USMLE step 1. The chapters are short and it is easy to review each one many times to firmly plant the info into long term memory. I had no problems at all with the stats on the USMLE. This book presents exactly what you need to answer all the questions on the USMLE without having you waste a lot of time studying things you will never use.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best source for USMLE
Are you one of those people that are scared of Biostatistics? Fear no more!! This book is for you. It explains everything in a very smart and simple way. Plenty of examples and tests help you to master the subject. If you study this book well, you will "understand" biostatistics and you don't have to memorize nonsense informations. two thumbs up!

4-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLY GREAT

5-0 out of 5 stars Statistics in a Nutshell

For those who struggle with beginning and intermediate statistics classes, it's a jewel. ... Read more

Antonio Colombo's Tips and Tricks attempts to summarize in a few sessions a number of practical concepts that, with practice, have guided and advanced the skills of an interventional cardiologist through 15 years in the cath lab. The objective is to convey practical points frequently not discussed in formal presentations. The material and the approach presented on these four CD-ROMs cannot always be defined as 'standard practice': they are an opinionated view of one person. The topics covered in 47 cases are those that Dr Colombo considers most relevant in interventional cardiology. Also included are two appendices: stent selection; and, pharmacology in restenosis prevention. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book but missing one very important thing?!?!?!?
This is a great learning tool for the beginning transcriptionist. It is easy to read and flows well. I am very excited about the learning opportunity it provides. There is only one very large problem. You need the CD-ROM that should come with the book. This version does not include the CR-ROM. The ISBN # for the same book with the CD included is 0 13 018735 6 and you will have to special order it from Amazon. If you don't you will have to order the CD seperately. That is if you can find it (I tried with no luck) and it is not cheap. The book with the CD included is much more cost effective. I hope this information helps. ... Read more

A male homicide victim with a shotgun blast to the chest. A female drug addict who has overdosed on crack cocaine. An elderly woman with deep stab wounds to the neck. A two-year-old motor vehicle accident victim with blunt head trauma. For forensic pathologists, police detectives, and crime scene investigators, dealing with death and injury is a daily routine. But even after investigating thousands of drownings, shootings, stabbings, electrocutions, overdoses, and traffic accidents, most professionals in the investigative fields still haven't seen it all.Originally published on CD-ROM, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology addresses much of the basic information which forensic pathologists and other investigators deal with on a day to day basis. Packed with 780 full-color, captioned photographs, this atlas examines everything from time of death and decomposition, to identification, to causes of death from blunt trauma, firearm injuries, asphyxia, cutting and stabbing injuries, and more. The atlas shows the various causes of death and injury with case -- "visuals" to help investigators understand the work they perform.Indeed, with its exhaustive coverage, the Color Atlas of Forensic Pathology will provideinvestigators with valuable insight into the many different causes of death and injury they must deal with and how the manners of death are diagnosed. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book on the subject.
This was the worst purchase I have ever made. This is a poorly illustrated coffee table book on death. There is no educational value. Although it is obvious that the author (Jay Dix) had great cases during his career, they are very poorly photographed, and the publisher has done a pitiful job of reproducing them. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellnet
I must agree with all the three prior reviews. The author has an easygoing style that I greatly enjoyed learning from. The pages are small in size and the font is rather big; which allows to finish this guidebook in few hours, and repeated.

There are twelve chapters. The firsts provide sensible advices about choosing "better" words, sentences, tables, graphs. I found chapter six about Spelling and Grammar, Punctuation rich with great advices. Other chapters advice about how to choose the right journal. The author was straightforward in the chapters about clinical report, review article, letters to the editor etc and ethics. Really, I was impressed by the eighth chapter " how to get more writing done".

Briefly I learned a lot from this concise guidebook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guidelines
Great guidelines, easy to follow and good explanations & examples. Also, debunks some of the grammatical rules that we were taught... "ending sentences w/ prepositions". Recommended reading for both writers, ghost writers, and medical practicioners who outsource some of their writing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent summary of Medical Writing
I recently purchased Robert Ile's Guidebook to Better Medical Writing and was very pleasantly surprised. He takes a concise, nononsense approach to the subject and provides readers with a series of excellent tips. He covers the basics of writing very well but also includes info on how to write case reports, clinical results, review papers, etc. I have found his book to be helpful in my own medical writing and editing consulting service. At first glance, you might find the textbook by Robert Iles, Guidebook to Better Medical Writing, deceptively simple. However, this authoritative handbook tells you in straightforward language everything you need to know about developing a clear, persuasive paper that stands a good chance of publication by a peer-reviewed medical journal. Mr. Iles also takes you through the process of manuscript submission, outlining strategies for acceptance. This is the best basic manual on medical writing I have seen in over thirty years as a medical writer and teacher. I plan to use this excellent guidebook in my seminars and courses on medical writing from now on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as a teacher and a resource
I used this text for an online course in medical terminology and was more than satisfied with the results. The author structured the book in such a way that it appeals to all learning styles--visual, auditory (using the audio CD or tape), and even movement (using the accompanying CD interactive exercises). Programmed learning is employed by the author and is a very effective way of teaching this "new language." I would recommend this book to anyone entering the allied health fields.

5-0 out of 5 stars _Quick and Easy_ Does It
I once knew a fellow who told me that he spoke only eleven *modern* languages fluently. When he told me, I wished that I could touch his hand and what he knew would osmose to me.

Of course learning a new language is not that easy. And except for the fact that one does not have to learn a new grammar, learning a new terminology is the same. It takes *work*. What can make these learning processes easier is having a teacher who knows how to organize the material so that learning associations come more readily.

There's no osmosis. Peggy Leonard does an outstanding job of organizing the material so that one can most easliy learn medical terminology. _Quick and Easy_ does it. ... Read more

The sparse information in WOUND CARE about caring for wounds and preventing them is superb, but the manual is primarily a catalogue of products. The type of material provided in WOUND CARE can be found in the detail sheets packed with wound care products. I found the book a disappointment.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wound Care, A Clinical Guide
This book is an excellent nursing resource for wound care. The opening provides a quick review of wounds and the healing process. It then moves on to proper wound assessment techniques, staging, and measurement. A section is dedicated to describing product types used for the prevention of decubitis ulcers. What I found most helpful in the nursing field was the wound care product descriptions. The book gives a general overview of product types and catagories then procedes to list specific brand name products. Each product is pictured for easier identification. The sizes of each product are listed along with the action, indications, contra-indications, and application/removal methods. This is excellent for product comparison as well as referral. I would suggest this for any nurse interested in wound care. It would also be a great reference book for nursing units that treat various wounds.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much focus on products and not enough on wound care
Received this book as a CEU offering. It seemed 3/4 of the book was on products. In some ways this was helpful as a comparison reference, but in this day of managed care, I can't use all these products. Would have liked more information on wound healing

3-0 out of 5 stars a list of wound care products, not a text on doing woundcare
if you're looking for a comprehensive listing of wound care products (dressings, gels, etc.) then this book is a good resource. my only complaint is that it is misleadingly titled. only a brief, introductory section of the book actually discusses wound care, and it does it in such a short space that it is useless to the beginner (because it lacks detail and specificity) and useless to the experienced clinician (because it lacks in-depth analysis and meaningful references). it certainly does list just about every single wound product you can mention, though. it should have been titled "the wound care product PDR"

5-0 out of 5 stars Product information is wonderful
I am a wound care specialist, in the home care setting, this book has been very beneficial . I use this book as a PDR for wound care products. This book is also a wonderful teaching/ educational aide to those not familer w/ wound care products. ... Read more
