Clear, concise, and covers most current knowledge..
A short, biceps-friendly "textbook" on reproduction that covers most of the current knowledge in the field. Very well organized, and beautifully set up. Look at those colorful pictures and diagrams. I enjoy reading this book very much. But, when we were preparing for our endocrinology exam, we found something in table 3.4, p.39, on luteinizing hormone structure - it says that the beta-subunit of LH has two carobohydrate chains (instead of one?). Hopefully it's just a small typo. Well, nobody's perfect. I still give it nine out of ten.

Practical, informative, fascinating
This is a superb book. It is written particularly for Rolfers, but is essential reading for any other body worker as well. Since studying this book on my own, I have become much more confident doing pelvic massage with male clients. Having detailed knowledge of the underlying structures allows me to explain to men what I'm doing and why. Clients can be informally instructed at the same time they are made more comfortable with touch in this area. For this reason, the book is valuable for all men who want to learn about their own bodies.

The text is clearly written and technical terms are explained. A particular strength is close-up photos of the genital areas of a variety of men. Each of these is paired with a line drawing of the same scale based on that photograph and showing the underlying anatomy. This arrangement makes it easy to relate what one sees on the table during a session with what one is feeling beneath the skin as one works.

Other chapters on foetal and juvenile genital development, posture, and sexuality are also very informative.

I have no hesitation at all in giving this excellent book five stars.

Penis, Male Pelvis and Pubic Area: Explored in Depth
The author has written an intelligent, frank and provoking book about the area of the body least talked about in an intelligent, frank and provoking manner. I consider this book essential for anyone in the "body work" field. It is a well written authoritive work by a scientist well versed in anatomy, physiology, and somatics. An excellent and important book for any Medical Doctor, Psychologist or Physical Therapist yet easily understood and enjoyed by someone with a less scientific mind. In fact, I consider this book a "MUST READ" for P.T.'s, Massage Therapists, and all body workers, consultants and trainers who work with men. I would also consider this book an excellent primer for any one (woman OR man) involved in a sexual, romantic, or loving relationship with a male. It is the equivalent of the famous "Our Bodies Our Selves" only about men. I recommend this book with highest praises!

Incredible...
This book hits on a subject that is rarely ever spoken of. It addresses issues of the male anatomy that I've long suspected were problematic, but on which I could never find any information. The book is informative and eye opening. If you're male, you should read this!

Letting Go of Tension in the Pelvis
Schultz's work breaks through barriers. By treating a formerly taboo area in body work--the male pelvis--he demonstrates how the lack of attention to that area has only increased the tension that our culture has inculcated in men. Professionally, with diagrams and photos, he shows how bodyworkers can assist their clients in releasing the pelvic tightness that has accumulated over the years for social psychological reasons. This hands on book is a must read for all bodyworkers and is obviously based on a lifetime of experience in the field. He ends with a discussion of healthy male sexuality as opposed to the sexual and postural dysfunction that can result from unhealthy pelvic tension and its resulting malformation. ... Read more

Ok, but a tad melodramatic
This was the first pregnancy book I read. Frankly, I found it a bit scary. The authors clearly had a very hard time with conception and with their small-town North Carolina doctors. That seems to have made them a tad fanatical about moms-to-be doing *everything* "right" or they'll never have a child. And I'm not sure the authros' (expectation and) experience of homophobia is particularly informative for those of us in more progressive settings. I very much appreciate the info. Finally, A Laymen's Edition!
Truely a remarkable accomplishment! Forget the "Idiot's Guide" and get this book. Simple, to the point, and none of that high tech medical jargon that confusses people. I learned more reading this book than any of the others I read before my wife and I started trying to have a baby.

understanding hormones influence in Love
Everyone should read this book before they think they are madly in love. It will help anyone discern whether it is the chemistry of our hormones or real love, or maybe both. In our lives it is often "hard to see the forest for the trees". This would help alot of people avoid making life mistakes.

Chemical determinism is not enough
The author of this book contributes interesting material on the important biochemicals (dopamine, estrogen, progesterone, LHRH, testosterone, prolactin, oxytocin, and others) that influence and help to regulate the universe we think of as "human sexuality." You will learn more than a few things. It seems that a working knowledge of high levels of testosterone can teach us quite a lot. (Women, proceed with caution!)

Unfortunately, she neglects other factors (and there are so many that make up human choices in love and sex: psychology, for example - and whether or not a couple has a single thing besides the kids to talk about after twenty-five years of marriage) that for me the information loses any authority it might have had.

In addition, she has an ax to subtly grind, and it is that men and women in their fifties (and older) have the very best chance for sexual compatability - for a set of specific chemical and biologically determined reasons. This information would seem to argue for couples staying together, but as we know, there are many other factors beyond sexual compatability (which is often fully present in couples who are literally coming apart - in every other way) that must contribute to couples' happiness - not to mention fidelity.

This book has interesting information about biochemicals' influence on our sex and love lives. You will doubtless recognize yourself and your mate in some of her descriptions, but as science it should be taken with a large grain of salt.

Chemical Bonding...
The insight of how the range of hormones effects the F/M relationship was wonderful! Hormones is what makes love happen...It explains how these hormones control our thought, how we perform, and the part they play in our associations from birth on up. This book also gives information about Progesterone's and Estrogens and the use of these in Hormone Replacement Therapy. It helps you see and understand the actual chemical bonding which happens between F/M.

good book for sex ed course
This is a really impressive work. Dr. Crenshaw can really write about her subject matter. I have used the book is sexual behavior classes on the college level, and my students uniformly approve. the book is well-written and clear, and makes a fairly difficult subject matter easily understood. A top notch job.

Best Book on Subject on the Market!
Very impressed with this book, especially compared to the others on the market covering this general subject. The roles of the various hormones in male/female relationships was especially valuable and insightful. Best of all, the author would sometimes tell you what science doesn't know! How humble and honest. Her acknowledged speculations were also fascinating. Might just save your relationship. Another reviewer criticized it for not being a "relationship" book. They missed the point that hormones make a "relationship" - otherwise its just a room mate situation. Remember the saying "Love conquers all." ? How much fun was this? Well, let me tell you...
This is the end-all, totally agreeable ...book. A truly fun and informative read. And, if you are like me, with the proverbial mind's eye, that pictures whatever is being digested through the auditory and ocular senses; well then, you'll find this tome better than most big screen movies. But, then again, the illustrations within it are marvelous, as refined and elegant as the literary style.

As previously noted by the other reviewers, Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves is an entertaining thumb through and equally compelling slow study. So sit back, relax, and open yourself to some new ideas, interesting trivia, and perhaps some erotic day dreaming. Dr. Terri Hamilton did an extraordinary job! I'd like to shake her hand, as well as pick her brain. Indeed, she is a woman who knows her stuff. So, where is the next book?

AMAZING & AMUSING...GREAT RESOURCE!!!
my background is not dissimilar to that of dr. hamilton's, and, as such, i am often asked to recommend reading material (by students and clients alike) related to the subject of human sexuality. rarely have i come across something so well-compiled as Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves. my goodness, the research is nothing short of phenomenal -- allowing the author to fill her pages with rich, full and, i might add, entertaining content.

a number of my students have not only found this book enlightening, but impetus for further study (as least in regard to the broader subject of human sexuality and it's role in psychology/society) especially important is the fact that this particular volume covers both genders--something no other offering in this field can boast.

i readily give "Skin Flutes & Velvet Glove" a 5+ star rating because it supplies a substantial and impressive amount of information in a well-written and amusing fashion. i hope dr. hamilton will continue to impart her unique, intelligent 'voice' upon those of us who find her works so delightful. how nice to read something that is just...so nicely written, so full of wonderful information, and so capable of giving us more than a few laughs along the way!! BRAVO!

Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves
In spite of its price (new hardcover), this book was well worth it. I'm currently reading it for the second time. I own many books on genitalia, and this is by far the best. I liked the mix of facts and fun. It's an historical treasure for anyone wanting to research the topic. The "Dicktionary" and the bibliography are particularly useful. Dr. Hamilton is to be commended for this very useful (and entertaining) book!

Everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask!
This book is hilarious! Dr. Hamilton is as humorous as she is serious and factual in presenting the sometimes awkward subject of sex and genitals. This is not material covered in Med. School for sure. I learned more from this book than I've ever learned from any medical text, "street knowledge" or "sex ed." Dr. Hamilton has written a fun, humorous, fact-filled book about almost anything and everything one has ever wondered about the organs between our legs. Because of her use of the coloquial and straight-forward, no nonsense talk approach of the subject matter...I wouldn't recommend this as a "sex ed." book for teens as much as I would recommend that every parent own a copy of this book to be better educated on the subject matter. This book is written with wit, humor and facts in a very comfortable format...While the title may be vulgar to some...the book is anything but. I enjoyed this read with a smile and occassional belly laugh, mainly because Dr. Hamilton presented answers or facts to questions I thought were too warped to ever contemplate finding an answer to. I highly recommend this book for anyone remotely curious about their private parts (or other's for that matter!).

Fun, Fresh, Fascinating!
I first learned about Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves from my girlfriend...literally! We were at a dinner party and someone mentioned some obscure acronym for male genitalia and the next thing I knew, my sweetie launched into a litany of one liners about "spare legs, squirmin' Hermans, big Macs, baloney ponys, trouser trouts, skin flutes..." and so on. We were hysterical if not a bit 'shocked' (especially after she treated us to an equally impressive list of nicknames for female genitals).

The list of names along with the interesting history of genital nicknaming certainly makes for great conversation fodder -- but Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves takes the reader far beyond this superficial falderal by delving into such topics as the connection between modern-day religion and ancient genital worship; the history of circumcision (more disturbing than one might imagine); odd (really odd!) things folks do to their own 'flutes' and 'gloves'; just to name a few. Dr. Hamilton also provides clear and fascinating info about genitals in general (nice chapters on male/female anatomy - the section on "the black rose" was mind boggling!)

excellent resource for women, clinicians, and educators
Taylor and Colino have written an excellent research-based guide to managing PMS. I have used the examples and guides found in the book to teach women in the clinical setting, and I have used it to teach nurse practitioner students about options for PMS management. I particularly like the straight forward suggestions that target healthy lifestyle choices. Women who follow the diet, exercise, and stress management guidelines that effectively manage symptoms of PMS have the added benefit of knowing they are contributing to their overall health. Thank you for this wonderful contribution to women's health.

Every woman should read this book!
I am a menopausal mother with a pubescent daughter. Both of us are free of hormonal troubles, thanks largely to the advice of this terrific book. It is so full of facts and figures, from both regular and alternative medicine. It covers every possible scenario. I can't imagine anyone that couldn't find a solution for their specific needs. This book is easy to use because each chapter relates to your specific interest, or you can read it cover to cover, which I suggest, since it has great advice on living a successful, healthful, stress free life. I particularly like how, at the end of a chapter, you're given ways to assess your condition and "to do" lists that help solve specific problems.
