The text is clearly written and technical terms are explained. A particular strength is close-up photos of the genital areas of a variety of men. Each of these is paired with a line drawing of the same scale based on that photograph and showing the underlying anatomy. This arrangement makes it easy to relate what one sees on the table during a session with what one is feeling beneath the skin as one works. Other chapters on foetal and juvenile genital development, posture, and sexuality are also very informative. I have no hesitation at all in giving this excellent book five stars.

Book Description Reviews (6)
For those who are in training to become a Doctor a premium is placed on easily-accessible, highly accurate and important information. I remember going through my clinical rotations and thinking that I needed a "pocket" book for every medical rotation to supplement my massive 20-pound, $100 texts while I was on the wards and in the clinic. Early into my OB/GYN Residency I got the hot scoop - THIS is the book to keep in your lab-coat if you're practicing OB/GYN. By the time I was a chief resident this book had saved me time and heartache and saved my patients from my blunders over and over. Like all "pocket" texts, this one doesn't contain lengthy discussions. But it DOES contain what you need to get through that night on OB/GYN call. And the next one.... and the next. The treatment for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (and hundreds of other common clinical situations)- before it's burned into your brain it's right here at your fingertips. It even gives you concise "go-by's" for how to dictate your operative reports for the most common OB/GYN surgeries. Since I got my first one a decade ago I've never NOT had a copy of this in my lab coat. I use it infrequently now, but when young trainees seem to need a push towards a clue - I push them towards this little gem.
This revision is definitely worth the investment, with updated information in all the disciplines within the field. New additions include the B-Lynch suture, expanded cancer staging and treatment algorhythms as well as expanded information on HRT. I highly reccomend picking up the 5th edition to add to your pocket!!

Book Description If you think so, you're wrong -- hormones control our sex drives and direct our love lives. In The Alchemy of Love and Lust, Dr. Theresa Crenshaw, a renowned sex therapist and researcher, unmasks the hidden agendas of our hormones as we progress through different sexual stages -- from adolescence through old age. Along with well-known hormones, Dr. Crenshaw introduces lesser known but potent influences that make up our "sex soup." The effects of these chemicals working together and individually offer insight into some compelling issues: Romantics needn't worry that science will eliminate the mystery of attraction. To the contrary, this program helps us discover romance, rekindle it, and keep it alive. Filled with often surprising information, The Alchemy of Love and Lust explains the effects of our sex hormones and gives us specific, practical suggestions on how to monitor them. Reviews (9)
Unfortunately, she neglects other factors (and there are so many that make up human choices in love and sex: psychology, for example - and whether or not a couple has a single thing besides the kids to talk about after twenty-five years of marriage) that for me the information loses any authority it might have had. In addition, she has an ax to subtly grind, and it is that men and women in their fifties (and older) have the very best chance for sexual compatability - for a set of specific chemical and biologically determined reasons. This information would seem to argue for couples staying together, but as we know, there are many other factors beyond sexual compatability (which is often fully present in couples who are literally coming apart - in every other way) that must contribute to couples' happiness - not to mention fidelity. This book has interesting information about biochemicals' influence on our sex and love lives. You will doubtless recognize yourself and your mate in some of her descriptions, but as science it should be taken with a large grain of salt.

| 51. The Male Biological Clock : The Startling News About Aging, Sexuality, and Fertility in Men by Harry Fisch, Stephen Braun | |

Book Description Say "biological clock" and most people think "women." Yet men have biological clocks too, reveals Dr. Harry Fisch, one of the country's leading experts in male infertility and author of this groundbreaking new book, The Male Biological Clock. Men's clocks tick at a different rate from women's and of course cause an entirely different set of bodily and behavioral changes over the course of a lifetime. But while men's clocks don't strike a "midnight" toll heralding an end to fertility the way menopause does for women, male fertility, testosterone levels, and sexuality all do decline with age. Dr. Fisch's book emphasizes that even young men can have testosterone levels as low as those of much older men, leading to infertility, sexual problems, and other serious health issues. Another startling revelation is that men over thirty-five are twice as likely to be infertile as men younger than twenty-five. In addition, as men age, the quality of their sperm declines significantly, giving rise to an increased chance of a Down syndrome baby, other genetic abnormalities, and miscarriage. Every couple should know all the risks and issues facing men, because these affect two of the most important things in their life: their ability to have children and their capacity to have good sex. The Male Biological Clock is must reading for every man and every couple who is struggling to have children or improve their sex life. Many of Dr. Harry Fisch's findings are startling -- beginning with the fact that infertility is not mostly a women's problem -- and he offers many helpful suggestions for how to deal with declining testosterone, changing sexual needs, and the fertility industry. We have all heard stories of men becoming fathers in their seventies or even eighties, yet most of us are unaware that these are dangerously deceptive exceptions. Older men face a number of increased risks as fathers, and often find their sex lives and well-being changing considerably. The good news: Much can be done to slow down and even reverse the effects of a man's biological clock. The Male Biological Clock tells you what you need to know and how you can achieve optimal fertility and sexuality.

As previously noted by the other reviewers, Skin Flutes and Velvet Gloves is an entertaining thumb through and equally compelling slow study. So sit back, relax, and open yourself to some new ideas, interesting trivia, and perhaps some erotic day dreaming. Dr. Terri Hamilton did an extraordinary job! I'd like to shake her hand, as well as pick her brain. Indeed, she is a woman who knows her stuff. So, where is the next book?
a number of my students have not only found this book enlightening, but impetus for further study (as least in regard to the broader subject of human sexuality and it's role in psychology/society) especially important is the fact that this particular volume covers both genders--something no other offering in this field can boast. i readily give "Skin Flutes & Velvet Glove" a 5+ star rating because it supplies a substantial and impressive amount of information in a well-written and amusing fashion. i hope dr. hamilton will continue to impart her unique, intelligent 'voice' upon those of us who find her works so delightful. how nice to read something that is just...so nicely written, so full of wonderful information, and so capable of giving us more than a few laughs along the way!! BRAVO!
The list of names along with the interesting history of genital nicknaming certainly makes for great conversation fodder -- but Skin Flutes & Velvet Gloves takes the reader far beyond this superficial falderal by delving into such topics as the connection between modern-day religion and ancient genital worship; the history of circumcision (more disturbing than one might imagine); odd (really odd!) things folks do to their own 'flutes' and 'gloves'; just to name a few. Dr. Hamilton also provides clear and fascinating info about genitals in general (nice chapters on male/female anatomy - the section on "the black rose" was mind boggling!) Engaging yet easy read, memorable/unusual factoids, highly entertaining... highly recommended!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Lengthy chapters focus on treating your symptoms with simple, natural solutions. Adding protein and exercise, avoiding sugar binges and alcohol, and training yourself with relaxation techniques can bring impressive results with far fewer negative side effects than prescription medications. Still, authors Diana Taylor and Stacey Colino do thoroughly address using antidepressants, herbs, and nutritional supplements, while cautioning readers that some remedies are still being researched or require a consultation with a physician. A detailed chapter titled "Putting the Pieces Together" helps you simply use what you've learned to design the best possible program that will make your Dr. Jekyll/Ms. Hyde transformation a thing of the past. --Jill Lightner Reviews (3)
