5-0 out of 5 stars Just what you need!
I wanted to know all the inner workings of applying and getting into nursing school. AND, I wanted to know how to actually make it through once I got in. This book has it all! From the reality of whether or not nurisng is for me to how to "get in." Plus, study tips, a specific breakdown of what to expect in school and very detailed advice on how to succed in it. I'm talking about details like how to prepare for tests, how to make the most of clinical experiences, and even how to get financial aid! Also,this book explains all about preparing for the licensing exam, and even how to write a "cover letter" and handle job interviews. THOROUGH! Vey thorough. I will refer to it for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent & Full of Info for Students of ALL Ages
At first I thought, hmmm...this is kinda skinny for 25 bucks. But now my only complaint is,
WHAT TOOK YOU SO LONG, STEPH? This book answered every question you'd ever want to ask
but probably couldn't find the answer to in one place.

It is great! If you don't have much experience in healthcare, and want to be a nurse, this is the book to
get! There are a few others out there, but this one is straight to the point, gives concrete ideas, even
talks about going the LPN route.

Even if you have an idea of what it's like to go to college, or know the classes you'll be taking, the
hoops you have to jump thru, etc., Stephanie actually tells you what'll be like when you have your first
clinical day. She tells you seemingly inconsequential details like the supplies you might be expected to
buy before you actually start your clinicals. That may be a small thing, but if you're tight on a budget
and just approaching your pre-reqs, isn't that a handy thing to know? She spells out what a big time
commitment it will be, how hard it is, etc., but also tells you that you can do it if you just get
FOCUSED.

And she tells you how to focus, gives study strategies, note taking tips, how to use study groups. I plan
on reading this section to my son who just began high school and needs help with his study habits. We
will both benefit from committing this one to memory.

She also explains what different specialties of nursing means. Didn't you always wonder what Nursing
Informatics was all about (obviously something about information, but what kind?). She tells you what
the classes that are usually standard in most schools of nursing are about (like what the hec is
"Foundations in Nursing"? Is it the beginning of nursing? The history, or what? It is actually just the
"basics").

Financial Aid is covered in this book not so much as to tell you where to go and what to do (altho some of this is there) because truly, as the book advises, your school will steer you in the right direction and it lists some places you can try for additional help. But did you know some grants, loans and scholarships can help with your living expenses? Important information to know if you're a single parent who is wondering how they will go to school, feed the family and have time to study.

Taking the NCLEX is spelled out in detail as well as what to do if you don't pass the first time....or the
second.

You can't go wrong with this book and I can't say enough good things about it. Everything from
making your application to the school and what they're looking for to going on to graduate studies is
included in this volume. Plus everything in between. If you are either a traditional high school student
who wonders what the whole education process of a nurse is, or you're a 50-something wanna-be
nurse going back to school after 30 years, you will profit from this book immensely. Absolutely worth
$... and then some! It will keep you from tossing and turning and agonizing over things Stephanie has
thoroughly spelled out in this terrific book! ... Read more

Book Description

"This is a useful text for the seasoned practitioner seeking a greater understanding of nursing philosophies. If other volumes in the series also summarize the contributions of key theorists and/or present the basis of nursing theory, the rationale for gaining an understanding of the professional theories, and the relationship of the theories to practice, the series as a whole would be very beneficial to the student nurse and the practitioner in professional nursing."

--Health Values

"This book presents in detail 12 leading nursing theories. Complex material is presented in interesting ways, usually contextualized within both the theorist’s background and related theoretical material. With allegiant reference to the original works of the theorists, the book informs with a forthright presentation that is concise, substantive, and thorough. . . . This is a commendably useful and usable presentation of nursing theory. It condenses the most relevant aspects of each theoretical approach, related research, and clinical and nonclinical applications. Often with pithy conciseness, it helps fill a need for ready access to diverse and complex material."

--Doody’s Nursing and Allied Health Book Review

Addressing many of the primary conceptual frameworks and theories in nursing, Foundations of Nursing Theory offers concise, informative descriptions of nursing’s philosophical origins. This compilation of works from the acclaimed series Notes on Nursing Theories not only covers the development, assumptions, and broad applications of each doctrine but provides specific examples of how it pertains to both practice and research. In addition, each of the 12 chapters concludes with a glossary of terms and a bibliography of the classic works, critiques, and research related to that theory and its author.

Invaluable to both students and professionals, this encompassing volume will foster a greater understanding--and utilization--of these essential nursing philosophies.

Book Description

This book covers 30% of statistical methods used for 90% of medical studies. It opens with databases from clinical medicine and uses such data throughout to give multiple worked-out illustrations for every method. In contrast to a traditional text, it provides two parts: (I) an introductory text for students in medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and other health care fields, and (II) a reference manual to support practicing clinicians in reading medical literature or conducting research study. The textbook part starts at ground zero in mathematics and covers only the basic concepts and the most frequently seen methods in biostatistics, following the philosophy that what the student remembers five years after the course is the important issue, not what is forgotten. The reference part is written to allow topic hop-about rather than a required sequence of reading. It is well indexed to find topics and terms. A great effort has been made to make it user friendly and the foreword has been written by VADM Richard Nelson M.D., Surgeon General of the Navy and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

Key Features
* Easy-to-follow format includes medical examples, step-by-step methods, and check-yourself exercises
* Includes a summary of formulas, method algorithms, and check lists in a back section
* Thorough discussion on required sample size
* Covers germane topics honed through multiple lecture series to hospital staff and residents
* Facilitates scanning and review by leading off each paragraph with its topic or gist in italics
* Covers important topics omitted in most biostatistics texts:
* Multiple, curvlinear, and logarithmic regression
* Survival methods
* Sequential analysis
* Time series
* Number Needed to Treat
* Meta-analysis

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information for the non-biostatician
Comprehensive, succinct with relevant examples that make the teaching points clear to even a non-biostatician like myself.
I have used this book in helping me to design clinical studies and it was extraordinarily useful! Thank you Dr Riffenburgh.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very fun book
.
What can be said that Dr. Chernik has not already written?

I am learning my statistics for epidemiological purposes and laboratory methods. This book is fun because the descriptions of the tests are succinct and it is replete with examples using medical data. I have been using it as a quick reference for statistical methods that I read about in journal articles, but have not had formal training in or experience with. This book is complementary to by basic stats book. This book is a must for amateur biostatisticians.

4-0 out of 5 stars new approach to teach stats to health professionals
This very recent book is already getting rave reviews from health professionals particularly in the US Navy where Dr. Riffenburgh is known. I recently met Dr. Riffenburgh at an ASA chapter meeting in San Diego and again at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Indianapolis this past August. The Foreword by Vice Admiral Richard Nelson sets the stage for the book and praises Dr. Riffenburgh.

I am a biostatistician working in the medical device industry. Last year I taught an introductory course to health science majors at Cal State Long Beach. Had Dr. Riffenburgh's book been out I may have used it. In the future if I teach the course again before my own book comes out I would use it.

Dr. Riffenburgh has a wealth of experience working on clinical trials and medical problems that require statistical analysis. He has a good fundamental understanding of statistical methods and a sense from his experience as to what topics are important to medical researchers. Although he was not formally trained as a statistician he understands statistical methods and the subtleties of the subject. He is sympathetic to the students who do not have strong math backgrounds and conveys the ideas clearly to them with the aid of several carefully selected data sets.

The book is very unique in that it is constructed to be two books in one. He wants to meet the needs of students who need to understand the basics of biostatistics so that they can appreciate, understand and evaluate the medical literature. Part I, consisting of chapters 1 through 9 is designed for them. The second need is for a reference text for physicians and other medical researchers who will need to use statistical methods in their work and publications. Chapters 10 through 21 are designed for them. As he states in his preface the text is aimed to be a 30/90 book. By this he means that it covers 30% of the statistical methods in common use but based on survey articles of methods used in medical journals it covers 90% of those techniques. He claims that 82% are covered in Part I and the remaining 8% in Part II.

Part I is an elementary text that is written in a tutorial fashion and introduces concepts through the data examples. It is well written and does a good job of explaining important ideas such as the difference between clinical and statistical significance, the interpretation of confidence intervals and the idea that the classical statistical approach to hypothesis testing is designed to reject the null hypothesis and not to "prove" it. Consequently he warns the readers not to conclude that the null hypothesis is accepted just because a particular test does not reject it.

Part I covers most important elementary topics. Part II repeats much of the material in Part I but presents it a little differently. In these chapters the material is presented in easy to use reference style using a lot more formulae. The level of the second half is a little higher and includes some more advanced topics (the other 8%). Topics covered in Part II but not Part I include sequential methods, meta-analysis, time series methods and survival analysis. Actually survival analysis is briefly discussed in Part I under epidemiological studies.

Another unique feature is the section of chapter summaries at the end of the book. This is sort of a Reader's Digest summary of the book that highlights the key results for those who want a reference source but may not have the patience to read through the material or those who after taking the course want a quick refresher. I have never seen this done before but I think it may have some value.

I believe that Dr. Riffenburgh has succeeded in his goals and I admire the fresh approach that he has taken. It is very difficult to avoid much of the basic mathematics without losing some of the important concepts and foundation to the subject.

Many authors that try, fail miserably. On the other hand authors that include too much mathematics scare off many of the students that the text is targeted for. Riffenburgh with this book and Motulsky with his book "Intuitive Biostatistics" have both carefully crafted a text that succeeds in this goal.

I did give the book four stars instead of five. This is because I think there are a few important topics in biostatistics that are not included or are covered too briefly. These include equivalence testing, group sequential methods, intention-to-treat analysis, methods for handling missing data and longitudinal data analysis.

The author deserves recognition for including important topics such as meta-analyses, non-parametric methods, logistic regression, sensitivity and specificity and survival analysis methods. These topics are often omitted from elementary courses but are all important in biostatistical applications.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Stats Book Ever...for those afraid of stats !
Dr. Riffenburgh has done an excellent job of "capturing" his audience and drawing them in without fear or confusion. Statistics can be overwhelming for the health professional and he has given them the tools to prepare proposals using statistical applications easy to understand and employ. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to any professional, novice or seasoned to the research process as a tool for success in the research process. Members of my research team in the Navy are using this book with ease and confidence. Thank you Dr. Riffenburgh for making a painful process very enjoyable and empowering !

5-0 out of 5 stars On R. H. Riffenburgh; Statistics in Medicine
I remember statistics in medical school in most unfavorable terms. That nightmare text has long been relegated to the dusty Zerox paper box in the garage. Now, enter Dr. Riffenburgh's textbook: Statistics in Medicine. This text is user friendly, laid out in a thoughtful fashion, has plenty of examples of how to apply all of those mysterious tests and is complete enough for the hard core bioresearcher. Bravo! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Probably not the authors' fault
This was the prescribed textbook for a class I took in nursing school. I found it very difficult and unpleasant to read, as did most of my classmates. Halfway through the semester, someone introduced me to another book by the same authors, called "Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults & Children" (4th edition, ISBN 0-323-01438-0). This book is twice as long as "Understanding Pathophysiology" and is much easier to understand. It is a sheer pleasure to read. I would give it five stars without hesitation.

I suspect that "Understanding Pathophysiology" is a condensation of "Pathophysiology: The Biologic Basis for Disease in Adults & Children" and that the publishers mistakenly thought they were making things easier for students by leaving some details out.

It may seem paradoxical, but I think it would take less time to read the big book than the small one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Analyze this
Rather than giving my opinion on this book, I would like to quote a typical paragraph. If you like it, you will probably like the book, but if you don't, you probably won't:

"An altered level of arousal (awareness) with acute onset may be caused by various factors (i.e. structural arousal alteration, metabolic arousal alteration, psychogenic arousal alteration). Structural causes are divided according to whether the original location of the pathologic condition is above or below the tentorial plate. Pathologic processes include infectious, vascular, neoplastic, traumatic, congenital (developmental), degenerative, polygenic, and metabolic causes. Metabolic causes are further divided into hypoxia, electrolyte disturbances, hypoglycemia, drugs, and toxins (both endogenous and exogenous). All the systemic diseases that eventually produce nervous system dysfunction are part of this metabolic category. Alterations in arousal range from slight drowsiness to coma" (page 356).

5-0 out of 5 stars A postive guide in a complex world.
Understanding pathophysiology requires years of study and practice, believe me I know. As a practicing RN/APRN and pathophysiology teacher at a local college - I have come to rely on Huether & McCance to guide myself and students through this complex subject. Give the book and authors the credit due for making sense of a difficult and oft times frustrating topic. "Understanding Pathophysiology" is everything the title promotes it to be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Graduate nursing student
Of all books that I read in undergraduate and graduate schools this one is the winner in dullness and difficulty reading. Instead of presenting already complex topics in more comprehansible way, this book just makes matters worse. If you are a student and this book is a requirement, well- good luck. If you are instructor- read this book before you make it a requirement. The only way this book may be a worthwhile to read if you are planning to write pathophysiology book and want to know what writing style to avoid.

2-0 out of 5 stars good info, bad organization
The information in this book is great, but the organization and editing is horrid. I would be reading along and the text would wander off onto other subjects and eventually drift back to where it started.

If you have to have this book, try and find another one that makes more sense to your head if this one doesn't. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nursing: the humanistic imperativ
This is the book that in a comprehensive and clear mode opens doors to qualitative research in nursing. As a nursing research teacher I find this book indispensable when we think of qualitative research. Here we can really understand: philosophy and theory of the foundations of the qualitative research; conducting the qualitative research and essencial elements, ethical requirements; phenomenology; grounded theory; etnography; historical research; the action research; all these metodologies apllied to nursing; triangulation as a qualitative research strategy (I don't know any other book that goes so deep and understandable in this field as this one); practical guide for sharing qualitative research results. For all this, it contents 344 pages of indispensable knowledge for nursing and nursing research ... Read more

Book Description

The kit that helped thousands of researchers and students do better survey research in the 90's has been completely updated and revised for the issues of the 21st century!

"The Survey Kit is an easy-to-understand, easy-to-follow, comprehensive guide for the novice survey researcher. In addition, it provides useful information about some qualitative research techniques such as interviews, focus groups, observational analysis, and content analysis. Pedagogical features in each volume such as checklists, reasonable resources needed, tips, and decision matrices help students focus on important aspects of the survey process and provide them with a sense of real life application. Detailed discussions of personal interviewing (survey and in-depth), focus group techniques, and risks and odds are welcome additions to the new volumes."

--Juanita M. Firestone, University of Texas, San Antonio

New to the Second Edition:

* Separate volumes on in-person interviews and telephone interviews

* Data management

* Literacy and language issues

* Qualitative survey research techniques, including focus group interviewing and content analysis

* Survey ethics, including the ethical principles to use in survey development and the characteristics of survey research misconduct

* Factorial design and conjoint analysis

* Cultural considerations

* Translation of interviews into other languages

* CAPI interviews

* Sample size and power

* Creating a complete code book

* The use of database management and statistical programs

* Internet surveys

* The characteristics of good web reporting

* A glossary in each volume

"What impressed me most is that the presentation of all the books is clear enough that I could use them both in a course and for independent study coursework. I often have doctoral students who want to do surveys for their dissertations, but who have not taken any coursework. I am confident that with some help, they could use the kit independently."

--Karen Evans Stout, Educational Policy & Administration, University of Minnesota

"Fink has compiled an orderly, accurate, developmentally logical approach to this frequently used method in the social sciences. She has presented the conceptual steps followed by examples; and, at the end of each chapter are questions and Web resources for the students. In addition to this clear scholarly presentation, the pedagogical features of the textbook are useful for classroom discussion and exercises as well as assignments."

--Kathy Sexton-Radek, Human Services, Elmhurst College

Besides the scholarship, what makes The Survey Kit so effective? The great learning aids! Each volume has checklists, warnings of what to avoid, examples of what works and what doesn’t work, reasonable resources, and new for this edition, exercises with answers and a glossary at the end of each volume.

"Two of the most useful tools in the series are a section on ‘Reasonable Resources’ and how to plan for surveying. The series does a good job of outlining most everything in between, providing checklists for the user’s convenience."

--Patrick R. Powaser, Personnel Psychology

In addition, The Survey Kit is effective for use with students:

"Students found the Survey Kit helpful as they developed their questionnaires in the Evaluation course. Some of these questionnaires later received more revisions and were used for their Thesis or Directed Research Project."

--Bonnie Rader, Family & Consumer Sciences, California State University, Long Beach

"The Survey Kit is very well written, clear and concise, easy to read and yet carries a wealth of information. I and most of the students like the Survey Kit very much."

--Shanker Menon, University of Sarasota

4-0 out of 5 stars I disagree!
I wasn't going to review this series, but I have to say the above review is completely off base. The survey kit was a very necessary tool for my graduate thesis... especially in cleaning up the mess that the original survey designers created by NOT using the kit. I will say that unless you have a need for the ENTIRE kit, just buy specific books from it (Try searching "survey kit").

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth the Money
Avoid this series at all costs! It is too simplistic to actually help you design or conduct a survey. A better strategy would be to select a few volumes from the Sage Applied Social Research Methods Series. (See Lavarakas, Fowler, and Mangione volumes.) I have seen Undergraduate text books that do a better job explaining survey research methods.

Given its price, the Survey Kit is a horrible waste of money. This is disappointing given the normally high quality of Sage products. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent prep!!
I see the other's reviews for the book and am very surprised. I couldn't have been happier with this book. I purchased a few books to help me prepare for my nursing school entrance exam, but this one is my favorite. It definitely helped me the most. I do feel that it made the entrance exam out to be more difficult than it actually was, but that was a real positive for me. I was actually over prepared for the exam, and therefore did really awesome on it and credit my success to this book. It has excellent reviews for math (which I really, really needed!) and English. It is an excellent, thorough preparation guide. I can't see how you can not do well on the entrance exam if you really utilize this book. Highly recommended!

3-0 out of 5 stars not the real deal
The material covered is on the ATI TEAS entrance exam, however, it is presented in a different text style. There are no critical thinking or reasoning questions for you to practice. Science and math need those sections added to this book. If you are rusty on all areas of math, science & reading it will help refresh you. Depending on the type of test you have to take, I would consider additional or another source of help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Didn't cut the mustard here!
... I want the best. This book, although they were not involved in the test that we took had me reviewing for stuff that had nothing to do with what I was taking. Which is why I give it the stars I did. However, check out the certain aspects of this book, and get other sources if you wish to ace this test. Call me a person who definitely learned from experience.

3-0 out of 5 stars Extensive math and science and vocab.reviews
There were two reasons I didn't give this book 5 stars. First off I took the NET test, this book seems to be geared more towards the more extensive ACT type tests. The NET mostly focuses on fractions, decimals and precents. This book went from theses basic math problems to trig. so it was a bit overkill for the net test. The other reason I didnt give it 5 stars...there were about a half a dozen mistakes in the book but they are obvious and wont lead you astray. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Reading,Understanding, and Applying Nursing Research
This book is useful as a broad overview for undergraduate Nursing and Health Education students. The chapters aid the beginner to learn the basic research steps and give examples on application of the principles. Clarification is needed on the distinctions between qualitative studies and quantitative studies, which faculty can augment in lectures. I have used this book with over 100 students and only a few students have been confused by the more difficult concepts, such as analysis of data and measurement techniques. Overall, it has been a good basic primer. ... Read more
