2-0 out of 5 stars very small book
A useful book but at times will leave you wondering -- paid a stupid expensive price for the one at the campus bookstore ($70) but for the price of this the same content is present in the Dana Oakes book on mechanical ventilation, and more.

If you're not actually planning on spinning the knobs on the ventilator, it's not a bad little book, but if you're more involved in the upkeep of the machine, it'll leave you wanting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Rapid interpretations of Ventilator Waveforms
A must for the general internist seeking a better understanding of mechanical ventilation or anyone new to the critical care field. This along, with "Guide to Mechanical Ventilation and Intensive Respiratory Care" by Pierce, is a great, and painless, way to get started.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent little book jammed packed with information!
"Rapid Interpretation of Ventilator Waveforms" is a 132 page introductory text on ventilator waveforms by three well known professors from Georgia State University, Jonathan Waugh, Vijay Deshpande, and Robert Harwood. They have put together a systematic presentation of waveform analysis starting from simple flow, pressure, and volume changes all the way to flow volume loops and troubleshooting problems in the clinical setting. This is an excellent little book jammed packed with information that can be carried around in your lab coat when doing clinicals or when analyzing ventilator waveforms on the job. The book has hundreds of waveform examples with clear and easy to understand explanations. This is one of the few complete books available on ventilator waveform analysis and at only $29.00 it is definitely a must have book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Practitioner Exam Review for Respiratory Care
This exam review text is well researched. It is very thorough in its content, following the format of the National Board for Respiratory Care's national exam. The book is divided into components for pre-testing without prior review, into review by specific areas of practice, and into the "real" exam, followed by in-depth explanations of the basis for the correctly keyed answers. Such an approach has been very helpful in preparing graduates of two year Respiratory Care programs for successful passing of the advanced national exam. As an instructor of Respiratory Care, I find this book to be more rigorous than the exam itself. While this book's exam questions are not the exact questons as administered by the national testing agency, they more than adequately represent the content of the exam. This very specialized book belongs in the hands of serious national exam candidates. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs
The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.

I found the CD-ROM included was very buggy in my computer. While it was helpful to see everything happening at once, the videos' content should have been more closely watched, since during a chapter about mechanical ventilation saying bag at around a rate of 40, will clearly show the person at the head ventilating at a rate of closer to 70 or 80.

5-0 out of 5 stars best so far
I'm going to make it short. I just passed my neo resuscitation recertification because of this book. What makes this book so special is its illustrations (each illustration is worth 1000 words or so)and its flowing text.If you need this type of book, than I believe this one is the best so far on American market; there is one better in Europe and Australia, but they have slightly diferent guidelines which may be better than ours, but hey, maybe one they we get to the point where we have world guidelines. Believe me, I have researched alot to find the best book on this topic, and this book is it. I recommend it to all MDs, critical RNs, neonatal respiratory therapists(RRT-NPS)and other medical staff that is often in contact with little bambinos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Improved Version
Text flows well and I was able to ace the course. Great reference to keep in your locker at work for review, too

5-0 out of 5 stars Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy
NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Learning tool!
Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation provides very easy to follow information as well as hands-on excercises in the practice of Neonatal Resucitation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Guide for the lung
This book was well worth the money! It was concise and helped me understand topics that were very confusing in lecture (ventilation/perfusion relationship). Plus it is a fast easy read. In 4 days I was able to read the book, understand all the important concepts and ace the exam.

5-0 out of 5 stars -- perfect --
This book was short and concise. Extra gibberish was omitted - the remnants were a beautiful combination of text and explanations to often confusing topics. This book is perfect for any one studying respiration. This book is intended for med school students, but it is written in such a fashion that anyone could pick it up and read it. Reviewing? Cramming? Learning? This book will solve all your problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars A short Introduction
This is a compact and simple introductory book about the subject.
It covers the structure, function and illnesses of the Respiratory system. It does not have nice or clear pictures like some new print books on shiny pages but information is there. Consider it as an extention of your Physiology book on the Respiratory Systems.I found the charts that shows the changes in based on changes in variables very helpfull.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth buying
This is an excellent introduction to respiratory physiology suitable for medical students.

It is concise and good for last-minute revising but written in a style that is very easy on the reader. The organisation of the chapters is perfect.

My only criticism is that the oxygen and CO2 dissociation curves are not very accurately drawn, but the book is otherwise full of useful diagrams.

Well worth adding to your collection.

Throughout the world, healing therapies using oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide are commonly used to treat a wide array of diseases, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, and arthritis. However, in the United States, these highly effective and inexpensive therapies have been largely ignored. Dr. Pavel Yutsis explains the difference between oxygenation and oxidation, and describes the four main types of oxygen therapy-Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Hydrogen Peroxide Therapy, Ozone Therapy, and Photoluminescence, or Ultraviolet Irradiation of Blood (UVIB)-and how these therapies are administered. Oxygen to the Rescue provides both the findings of scientific research and anecdotal evidence demonstrating that these underused therapies deserve to be acknowledged among frontline medicine in the United States. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!!!
This is by far the best book on respiratory care. No other book comes even close even though there is a major mistake in this new 8th edition: in the disease section, Tuberculosis is missing (editors/publisher mistake?) even though it is placed as one of the chapters in the contents sections. Huge mistake, but still the best book. There is also quite a few mistakes in referencing as the Respiratory Care journal and Clinics in Respiratory Care have been mixed up often, but that is the least of my concernes as I hardly ever follow references. This book is In full color, has great section on ventilatory support, respiratory anatomy and physiology is superb, blood gases also, sleep studies, basically everything. Could have made bronchoscopy more detailed, but I gueass the book will be too big. I personally would like to see next 9th ed. this to be expanded even more and for the Mosby respiratory care equipment book by Cairo to be encoorporated into Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. This book can be of use for all that need to learn or be familiar with respiratory care.

5-0 out of 5 stars newer edition
A new 8th edition has been published. But this is definately the Bible of Respiratory Care.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is the "Bible of Respiratory Therapy" as once said by my professor. It's a great learning tool that should be used at all colleges offering the respiratory program. I'll always keep this book around no matter what.

5-0 out of 5 stars Respiratory Therapy at its finest
The Egan's manual for respiratory therapy is the most benificial learning tool and reference manual that I have come across in all of my career. The information in this book is not only easy to understand but layed out in a manner that makes finding what you need an easy task. It gives a thorough review of all the important clinical data and physical characteristics needed to become a competent practitioner. The information in this book is explained in a very simple form which makes it easy to understand and retain the material that is covered. I would recommend this book as a refence tool to any student pursuing a career as a nurse, respiratory therapist, or physician. While this book may apply specific emphasis to the respiratory related field, it will reinforce your nursing or medicinal background by examining disease processes from a cardiopulmonary standpoint. This book has been a valuable learning tool and greatly aided me in both respiratory and nursing related classes and God willing as medical student. Best wishes to all and I hope you enjoy your read.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
This book is simply ; THE BEST RESPIRATORY PRACTICE BOOK out there. It covers all areas of respiratory practice with one exception: it does not cover individual mechanical ventilators which is good and bad. GOOD = book not as heavy; BAD = must buy a respiratory equipment book in addition to this one. BUT, THIS IS STILL THE BEST RESPIRATORY PRACTICE TEXTBOOK ANYWAY, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for All Health Care Professionals
I found this book to be the most beneficial with respect to understanding respiratory care. I am currently a Pediatric resident in Nevada. This book helped me on several occasions when I was on call and I am grateful to the authors. The book contains all relevant material and omits unnecessary detail that other books have had in abundance. This book could be frustrating for someone who has no understanding of ventilator support, however, would be more than adequate for any health care professionals including nurses, respiratory therapists or medical students looking to tie up the loose ends. After I purchased the book, several other residents I work with opted to purchase it as well. Good luck!

3-0 out of 5 stars can be much better
... This book lacks much info to be considered adequate source for the "middle of the night" reference as one reviewver below or above states. Its also "weird" that the four reviewers before me are all from Michigan I believe that since the authors went through the efort of publishing this pocketbook, they should have given much more effort to make it more useful. There is almost no immediately helpful info in this book for the clinician RT or MD (especially if paying [money amount] for a spiral booklet which can easily be made at home for [money amount]) If you need to get a good pocket reference on MV, then you should get Oakes' Ventilator Management [came out in late 2002]; this book has at least 50 times more info [and useful too] than the booklet described here. Its amazing that Hasan and Pappas book sells pretty good ; it must have been those 4-5 reviewrs that did good promo job for the authors. Believe me, I'm not trying to bash this pocketbook. If you dont believe me, buy it and most likely wil regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review book
As as Emergency Physician I found this to be an excellent pocket reference. Although it is primarily geared to the PICU/ICU setting I found the book easy to read and extremely helpful. The principles addressed on acute ventilator management were excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars No.1
This new 8th ed is even better than 7th ed (superb use of very nice fonts, very nice glossy paper and much stronger covers that do not bend as it was the case in 7th ed). It is full of information with alot of info based on very important guidelines developed by American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) and American Thoracic Sociaty (ATS). If you need the most authorative textbook on pulmonary function tests then this is it without a doubt. I usually prefer hardcover books, but since this book has pretty decent thick softcovers it should be OK for those that also prefer hardcovers. I recommend this excellent book for all that need to learn/review/teach PFTs and have a good reference on this subject such as pulmonologists, respiratory therapists/physiologists, and other MDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Written Textbook
I teach Respiratory Therapy, and specifically Pulmonary Functions. I have found Ruppel's text to be very comprehensive and easy for students to read. He has written a book for the technologist, not the physician. The informations is well researched and correct according to the established standards set up by the American Thoracic Society and the American College of Chest Physicians. I have read other popular Respiratory Therapy Text that have apparently never heard of these standards. I am in anticipation of the release of his 8th edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Reference Book
THIS IS A GOOD REFERNCE BOOK FOR STUDENTS AS WELL AS RESEARCHERS.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ruppel 7th Edn
Agree with previous reviewers that it is a good text. We use it as a text for our undergraduate and postgraduate Respiratory Science programs at Charles Sturt University in Australia.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Ruppel edition an asset for RT student or staff!

3-0 out of 5 stars decent
Good book on mechanical ventilation but cannot compare to some other books on this subject such as or mechanical ventilation by MacIntyre and Branson or Tobin's book. If you are a clinician dealing with ventilators this is a book that you may find of use. The thing that I don't like about this book is that it is softcover (which may not bother you) and that the author basically wrote almost the whole book by referencing extensively from various medical journals which makes reading harder as almost after each sentence the is superscript reference to look for. The author could have used a few sentences of own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A major expansion & refinement of the previous edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hyperbaric Medicine for Neurological Conditions
Nothing is more traumatic and challenging than brain injury: for the brain is our master conductor, the place where self resides. For those who suffer any kind of deficit in brain function - whether from autism, stroke, learning disorders, sports-injuries, spinal cord injuries, near-drowning or traumatic brain injury - it often seems there is no answer, and no hope.

But there is hope. New findings in neuroscience prove that the brain continues to develop new neurons throughout life, that the brain can grow new connections, and that with proper treatment the seemingly intractable cases of brain injury can improve remarkably. One treatment that has proven quite effective is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy - a treatment in which patients breathe pure oxygen inside a special chamber with a slightly increased amout of atmospheric pressure (less pressure than an airplane). In many cases those who suffer from these conditions show great improvement in speech, memory, social and cognitive abilities after undergoing a series of hyperbaric oxygen treatments.

In head injuries if cerebral blood flow is interrupted a negative chain reaction is started. The lack of oxygen, or hypoxia, disturbs, neuron metabolism within the alarmingly short time of just 6 seconds. neurons begin to die without blood flow. In serious injury or heart attack or significant stroke, for instance, measurable activity in the cerebral cortex - our thinking brain - can cease within 2 minutes and brain damage begins within 5 minutes. Within 10 minutes, the brain stem, responsable for our basic motor functions stops. Brain and heart tissue deprived of its oxygen supply may undergo necrosis or infarction. However, hyperbaric oxygen treatment has proven itself to help awaken the sleeping neurons in the ischemic penumbral areas of the injured brain, allowing new growth of neurons, and healing of the brain and body. Overall, there is a decrease of cerebral edema, an increase in cerebral blood flow and an increase in oxygen to the neurons which help to maintain proper cellular function. This accounts for the "miracles" that we often see with hyperbaric treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is also used for respiratory conditions, carbon monoxide poisoning, wound healing and for divers with decompression sickness.

"Oxygen is to the brain what rain is to the desert ~ it creates an oasis in life".

Review:

The book is well written, and makes heavy medical science easy to read. It explains the medical and physiological science of hyperbaric oxygen treatments ("HBOT") in some detail, but was written for you and me to read and understand. It reviews HBOT for many different diseases and conditions, including MS, stroke, arthritis etc. The commonality for these diseases and their response to HBOT is they each have systemic circulatory problems and an immune response, with disruption of cellular metabolism as root problems in their etiology.

It is very helpful for parents and patients to understand whether or not HBOT would be a viable treatment alternative. It also discusses how HBOT affects the condition, or disease, and whether the treatments are curative (carbon dioxide poisoning), or simply maintain the current state (multiple sclerosis).

If you have a child, or relative who has had a stroke, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis (yes- MS), order this book NOW! Learn all you can about HBOT, its applications to your loved one's condition. When you consider all the pain, agony, lost income and costs associated with currently insurance approved therapies, and the dismal results achieved, spend a few dollars and an hour to read the relevant parts of the book and think outside the box, a little. HBOT is not laetrile. HBOT is a well established (everywhere else in the world) and basic technology that enables your body to get a boost to naturally repair itself through its own natural physiological response to oxygen under pressure. HBOT is used every day in the US for wound care - which has much of the same basis as neurological wound care (stroke, asphyxia, or brain injury).

The Author

Dr. Neubauer is one of the world's top experts on HBOT and his work, efforts and patient care are well-respected by other top HBOT experts. He is known and respected as the "Grandfather of HBOT for neurological conditions". While at his center for my daughter's treatments I met a number of HBOT experts who visit him to confer and continue research and had the privilege of reading letters from many more HBOT physician- scientists from UK, Canada, Italy, China, Russia, the US, etc.

HBOT Summaries

HBOT is used worldwide for various injuries including various poisonings, and crushed wound injuries (sic - car accidents, etc.). HBOT is used in many advanced countries including UK, Italy, Russia, Japan and China (and many poorer countries) for treating closed wound brain injuries from birth, accidents, or strokes. HBOT is not accepted by the US medical community, yet, due to the lack of double-blinded studies as well as due to the lack of understanding of the underlying physiology. Note: the underlying physiology of approximately 50% of the drugs listed in the Physician's Desk Reference are poorly understood.

HBOT has been clinically demonstrated to be effective in treating a variety of closed wound brain damage injuries by enabling the body to re-establish damaged blood vessels, and by "waking up" neurons made dormant from injuries. Recent Russian studies show some of the underlying physiological mechanisms (for neurological injuries) appear to be the elimination of the deficit and restoration of CO2 formation and consequently the autoregulation of the O2 transport to the neuron (using minimized hyperbaric treatments - 1.1 - 1.2 ATA). Essentially, correcting the effects of oxygen deprivation from the injury by re-establishing micro-circulatory and intra-cellular O2 / CO2 metabolisms. The disrupted neuronal metabolisms appear throughout the "penumbra" of the brain injury. This helps explain Dr. Neubauer's theory "waking up" of sleeping/dormant neurons.

Personal Experience

My daughter (Rebecca, five yo) has extremely severe cerebral palsy (died at birth for 35 minutes, life support for 6 days; no viable EEG, etc.). Going into the HBOT therapies, I was excited and hopeful. But, not prepared for how I was amazed at her response, as well as the improvement in her brain (SPECT) scans. I had several leading doctors (cardiologists and pediatric neurologists) read her SPECT scan results and each expert was astounded at the changes. Rebecca gained metabolic activity in 80%+ of the areas that were previously inactive/dormant prior to HBOT treatments. Rebecca clearly demonstrated the physical ability improvements corresponding with SPECT scan improvements. Her improved physical control, coordination and motor learning were easily measured and noted by every therapist and doctor who regularly works with her.

HBOT for CP children

For children, HBOT is not a miracle cure. Children must grow, develop and mature through stages. Each stage provides a neurological basis for developing into the following stage. HBOT enables the patient to revitalize damaged, but living but otherwise non-functional neurons. However, once those neurons are revitalized, they need input on how to develop, where to establish connections, and how to be integrated into the brain and body's general system. Thus, HBOT must be co-treated with physical therapies.

Recent HBOT Clinical Findings Dr. Neubauer's recent International Symposium on HBOT for CP and the Brain Injured Child (July 25-28, 2001) presented numerous positive clinical research findings on HBOT for brain injuries. While there is substantial work to be done to better understand the underlying metabolic and physiological principles of what happens on the cellular and systemic levels, there is very little doubt about the efficacy of HBOT for treating neurologic injuries and conditions.

Many HBOT Center Medical Directors can name cortically blind CP patients who have gained sight after 40-150 HBOT treatments. This is exceptionally objective clinical information that should be pursued.

To make it short, this is the best book on respiratory diseases out there for respiratorists and medical students. You want a quick review of respiratory A&P, PFTs, CXR, Hemodynamic and other assessment skills/techniques plus most importand adult and neo/ped pulmonary diseases, then you got to get this book. On top of all that, it has unbeliavably beautiful color illustrations of each disease which makes absorbing and understanding the material so much easier. The only flaw (for me anyway) is that this book is not hard cover and I think it should be considering its size and price. Written by MD and RT, good combo for a respiratory oriented book. STRONGLY recommend. ... Read more
