5-0 out of 5 stars clinically helpful
Although I've only taken one strain/counterstrain course (for the extremities) I use this text frequently in the clinic. The photos are clear and I can easily duplicate the positions for the neck/back although I've had no specific course instruction on those areas. Many times the techniques from this book have helped when other things haven't worked. Definitely worth checking this one out.

Sharon Butler was working as a massage therapist and Hellerwork practitioner when shedeveloped carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. Unable to sleep through the night because of the pain andconcerned about her livelihood, she built upon her knowledge of connective tissue anddeveloped a series of stretching exercises to gently relieve the tension in her body. After daily stretching inthis way, her pain soon subsided. To prove that these exercises weren't just a fluke, Butler intentionallyoverworked her body to bring back her symptoms. While this may not have been the smartest move, herstretching program again relieved her pain.

The magic behind her powerful exercises is their focus on fascial tissue. Fascia, which is stronger thansteel, holds the body together. It wraps around muscle fibers, bones, and tendons. (If you've ever looked atan uncooked piece of chicken and noticed the glistening white layer over the meat, you've seen fascia.) Inpeople who overwork their bodies, the fascia hardens, a natural response to prevent future injury.Unfortunately, this stiffness worsens with repeated insults to the body. Muscles, nerves, and tendons tenseup and inflame even more and may even adhere to each other. Metabolic waste products can build up andbecome trapped instead of being carried away by the lymph system, and even more pressure is placed onthe affected body tissues.

Enter Butler's exercises. The book is arranged to let you pick and choose the correct stretches to suit yourneeds. Too much typing, guitar playing, or gardening? Stiff neck, tingling fingers, sore upper arms, or allthree? However you developed your repetitive strain injury and whatever your upper-body symptoms (or ifyou're smart and you'd like to prevent such problems), there are multiple stretches in Conquering CarpalTunnel Syndrome to suit your needs. The book is arranged to help users develop a personalizedstretching program with more than 40 stretches for the upper body, forearms, wrists, fingers, and thumbs tochoose from. Butler thoroughly explains the importance of stretching and the correct (and incorrect) way todo it, and the exercises are lucidly illustrated. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty great relief for me
After 3 years of suffering RSI from working at a PC, I was desperate, and had tried regular medicine, and even acupuncture (this last, I'm still on, and it works) but the best relief I have found was from the series of exercises found on this book. From upper-body to hand-fingers, this book (Comprised of mostly full-page illustrations) helps you relieve the symptons of your RSI. I can't say I don't have any pain anymore, but I can say it has greatly reduced, and improving.
There is little text in this book, dealing mostly with how you should do the repetitions and how to avoid further injury, then it is right ot the action with the diagrams and instructions for every exercise.
If you have an RSI try this book, and also check for your posture while working, seating, and standing. I have a great non-commercial link about this for you, write me if you want it.

Health and peace to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable for anyone suffering from RSI
This is the book I return to again and again, since the exercises, which are gentle and easy to do, really do help on tense and injured muscles and tissue. The book is very much focused on the drawings of the exercises with helpful text on the sides and references to important intro text scattered throughout to help you remember the essentials of safe stretching. Very easy to use book, and the exercies do help! If you need more information in general about RSI, the physiology of it and treatments, I have found "It is not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!" to be a very informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book!
If you have an RSI, get this book. (Also, I just found out that Sharon Butler has a web site: http://www.selfcare4rsi.com. I'm definitely going to check it out.)

This book presents information on RSIs not found elsewhere. It begins with a concise but thorough discussion of the role of fascia in the development of RSIs. From my personal experience with over a dozen MDs, many doctors, even hand specialists, don't understand the role of fascia in these injuries. As a result, despite their good intentions, they can't effectively help many RSI sufferers. Neither can many well-intentioned physical therapists.

Also, never before had I heard of the concept of the "stretch point," which is the secret of success for this program. I suspect that people who don't get results with this program have not applied this concept but are stretching too hard and fast, only worsening their symptoms.

Besides helping you figure out which stretches to do for your symptoms, there's a "Prevention by Profession" section that lists various professions and the suggested stretches to do for them. It's not just computer users who get these injuries!

If I was able to recover from my disabling RSI, so can you. Good luck with your recovery!

2-0 out of 5 stars Caused more pain
The good: The exercises are categorized and easy to understand. The exercises probably are effective for most people.

The bad: Following the exercises precisely for three weeks, I felt much more numbness and weakness. For some, these stretches may actually exacerbate the problem.

Beware, and begin slowly. If you are one who finds benefit, then gradually increase the number of stretches and the time you spend stretching. If, however, your symptons increase, slow down or stop.

Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Godsend
As a chiropractor, I can, and frequently do, heartily recommend this brilliant book to people with all kinds of aches and pains so that they can heal themselves. One of the most striking things about this book is it's simple design that makes it very easy to use. Within 15 minutes of picking up this book you can understand what a "stretch point" is (don't skip that part) and begin doing stretches geared specifically to your symptoms. What a great contribution Sharon Butler has made to healthcare!

Book Description

Arthritis is usually considered a disease of older adults, but nearly 300,000 children in the United States suffer from some form of arthritis or rheumatic disease, such as juvenile arthritis (JRA), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, or Kawasaki disease. Yet until now very little information has been available to guide parents and doctors in properly diagnosing such children. Here is a readable, reliable guide to the common causes of bone, joint, muscle, and arthritis pain in children, designed to help parents and physicians understand these disorders, arrive at the proper diagnosis, and choose the most effective treatment. In this comprehensive resource, Dr. Thomas Lehman--the head of one of the most prestigious pediatric rheumatology programs in the world--offers easy-to-understand information on the causes, symptoms, tests, and treatments for a wide variety of rheumatic diseases and childhood pain. Dr. Lehman writes with great clarity, providing numerous case examples that illustrate the topic at hand and offering practical, down-to-earth advice. Equally important, he answers the questions that parents are most likely to ask: What should they observe in their children? What questions should they ask their doctor? Which tests are necessary? What risk factors should they be aware of? And how can they help their children cope with the social and psychological aspects of their illness. The book summarizes diagnostic tests, discusses the most effective medications, and discusses physical therapy, alternative therapy, and surgical options that are available. Clearly written, thorough, authoritative, and up-to-date, It's Not Just Growing Pains is the definitive resource available on the subject for parents and health care professionals, helping them to understand the children's pain and find the best available care. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR ALL PARENTS WHOSE CHILDREN PLAY SPORTS
I highly recommend this book for all parents. It provides
amazing up to date information regarding different types of sports injuries and how a parent may be pushing their child
into hurting themselves and not realize this fact. And, more importantly it allows a parent to distinguish between what he/she may think is a sports injury, but may actually be a chronic degenerative condition such as juvenile arthritis. Autoimmune conditions run in my family and my 7 year old neice has recently beed diagnosed with polyarticular arthritis.
This book has become a bible for our family. Dr. Lehman's approach not only covers medical issues but social issues as well. Thank you to him for providing such valuable information
and answers to all of us parents who always have so many questions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've ever read
This was a really great book. Very clearly written with good explanations and analogies to explain some stuff that other doctors I have talked to have made needlessly complicated. It really helped me understand why kids get joint pain and about my younger brothers arthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars This really helped me to understand
Wow!! This book is full of common sense practical advice that I never found anywhere else. A big help to me in understanding my child's problems and how to make sure she's getting good care. I strongly recommend this book to any parent of a child with arthritis or a related condition. It will help you figure out what's wrong and how to get the best results. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Musculoskeletal Scanning: Unchartered Territory
This is a great hands-on tool. I worked side by side with another sonographer while we attempted to scan pathological joints (rotator cuffs, knees, elbows, etc.). The images in this book were great references for identifying anatomy while we scanned. It would be nice, as an addition, to have side-by-side comparisons of normal versus abnormal images of joints. This is my only complaint. Otherwise, very user friendly for both the experienced musculoskeletal scanner and for the novice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
I found the information quite thorough. It is written in a user-friendly way, easy to understand. I bought this book because it was listed as a reference for the chiropractic practice part 2 exam. This book helped me with the locations of the trigger points. Sometimes the chiro boards like to ask questions on trigger points. However, Leonardi's book: National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers and National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations are excellent for board exam preparation. These three books are needed for the part II and Part III of the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in drug-free pain relief!
As a Clinical Massage Therapist at a hospital, I use these books almost daily. In fact, I just ordered my second set. . . The first is so threadbare it's barely usable. ANYTIME I have a patient with a pain that I can't immediately identify I grab my Travell's. This set is an absolute BIBLE for anyone in the health care industry. Travell and Simons have esentially written "The Instruction Manual" for elliminating myofascial pain by going to it's source!

Janet Travell, MD and David Simons, MD were absolute pioneers when it came to myofascial pain and it's treatment. What makes these books even more amazing is that they were written a full quarter of a century before doctors even acknowledged that myofascial pain actually exsisted. . . What makes them interesting is that, in this, the most current edition, they have re-evaluated about 65% of the sites that before would only be considered for cortizone or saline injection and now recommend these areas be attended to by a Massage Therapist. They even go into strong detail as to stroke, direction and stretching. There are still plenty of sites that they recommend for injection, but only in a last resort situation.

The chapters are laid out in an incredibly easy to understand manner, though that's not even the beauty of the book's design. If you know the name of the muscle in question, you simply look inside the front cover; the muscle are all listed with their coresponding page numbers next to them. Don't know the name or not sure which muscle it is in the group? No problem. You again open the front cover and there, in 5th grade simplicity, are charts for all the areas covered in the book. Flip to the area in question and look through the diagrams. When you find (in the super well drawn diagrams) the pain you are trying to treat, you are given, not only several treatment plans, but etiology and most likely direct verve aggravation associated with the pain.

My only problem with the set is that the book are not as well bound as maybe they could be for the price. You'll notice, however, that it didn't have enough of an impact on me to give it any less that a perfect score.

I STRONGLY recommend this book for ANY health care practitioner that deals with pain control and alleviation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force
Janet Travell MD and David Simons MD spent a lifetime studying the patterns and treatment of muscular and soft tissue pain in patients. It is a specialty in itself, and provides an amazingly detailed review of anatomy. These books are the bible on the subject written by the "mother" and "father" of the specialty. There will hardly be a day in the professional life of a busy primary care practitioner, rheumatologist, orthopedist, neurologist, physiatrist or physical therapist when these books will not be used. The more one knows of this field, the more revelations one gets into those difficult chronic pain patients. The etiology and muscular complexity of the huge field of "tension headache" syndromes now become clear. With these books you will have the tools to diagnose and treat effectively (usually dramatically) the entire spectrum of myofascial pain from head to toe, muscle by muscle. Why do so few physicians know of this vital area of medicine?

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Text
The Trigger Point Manual is a two volume set detailing the current state of knowledge of trigger points and myofascial pain for both the upper body, vol. 1, and the lower extremities, vol. 2. It also contains fascinating analysis of how muscles work in different situations, offering insight into aspects of human movement. These wonderful books are essential reading for all manual therapists.

5-0 out of 5 stars All MD's,DDS's,PT's,DO's&DC's Should Study & Use This Book!
Literally millions of patients in pain could be helped if they and their health care professionals understood myofascial trigger points and referred pain, the concepts so thoroughly documented in the "Trigger Point Manual" by Travell and Simons. For example, over 80 percent of patients with TMJ disorder (TMD) experience myofascial pain. With a knowledgeable provider diagnosing, plus utilizing the patient's own self-help abilities for a home- care program, billions of dollars could be saved in unnecessary medications and procedures. Travell and Simons have given health care professionals a path to walk. This book should be required reading in all institutions of learning. -- This text refers to the Hardcover edition. ... It has a good section on identifying artifacts and evaluating the adequacy of the scans. There's not much description of secondary causes of osteoporosis but that information can be obtained elsewhere. In all, a good learning and reference book, esp. for physicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Clinical Bible for Osteoporosis
This is the single most important resourse that any physician performing DEXA scans should have in his or her library. It is a reference used frequently and is a great review of the state of the art of bone density. Two copies are useful, if the first is misplaced. A must read for physicians starting the bone densitometry business. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the money!
I'm an Advanced Practitioner of Massage Therapy and find this book VERY helpful. The Muscle Energy Techniques (M.E.T.s) are explained very thoroughly, and the accompanying drawings, and or pictures, are very helpful. While familiar with the M.E.T.s, having this book as a reference for all the upper body muscles, and their positioning for the best M.E.T. applications, is very rewarding. I'd recommend this book highly to anyone that has a basic understanding of the therapeutic aspects of massage and M.E.T.s.
Mr. Chiatow and Ms. Delany, PLEASE!!! I can't wait for the next volume! I'm sure the Lower Body will be as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques - Vol. I
This is a really clearly written, concise book, with drawings and pictures of muscle positions, trigger points, etc. I bought the Jane Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Books before this one came out, and for the money wish I had bought the Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Tech. Book. Unless you are a Physician, who wants to inject the patient's trigger points with a saline solution, and then you better be very exact in your aim with the needle, I think the Clinical Application of Neurom. Tech. Book is a much more practical, useful, hands on, straight forward book that addresses all the trigger points, origins and insertions of the muscles in a very user friendly way. Until this book came out, Jane Travell's was the only great reference guide; but what patient really likes injections? Now this book surpasses Dr. Travells, in that all the material in it is useful and usable. Can't wait for Vol. II, Lower Body, to come out. ... Read more

Book Description

Fibromyalgia is a form of chronic neuromuscular pain, a pain-amplification syndrome brought on by abnormal interactions between hormones, the immune system, neurotransmitters, and the autonomic nervous system, that afflicts six million Americans every year. Often misdiagnosed, and widely misunderstood, the majority of patients are turned away from doctors or treated for depression. This guide offers expert advice to sufferers of this painful syndrome and gives them the education they need to get the help they require but rarely get. In their earlier books, Making Sense of Fibromyalgia and All About Fibromyalgia, noted medical writer Janice Wallace and Dr. Daniel Wallace, a leading expert on this disorder, provided comprehensive guides--for both patients and professionals--to this little known and poorly understood syndrome. Now, in Fibromyalgia, the Wallaces provide an inviting and succinct version of the syndrome they have studied, laid out in clear and accessible language. The authors provide a clear, concise explanation of the syndrome and its symptoms, and also outline the recent advances in treatments. Fibromyalgia addresses a desperate need for concise, accessible information on this syndrome and offers reassurance to patients and their families. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars .
I would give the book more stars if it was openly listed as an update of their earlier book, "Making Sense of Fibromyalgia." There is very little difference in the two books. On it's own, it's a good resource for understanding current thoughts on the causes for the symptoms, medical and complementary treatments, and ways to minimize its effect on your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good buy.
This is an excellent book. Don't be intimidated by the science. It's good as a reference for the fibro patient. I have fibro myself and it helped me to understand the disease and how to help myself. ... Read more
