Book Description

What forces lead to changes in governance among medical schools and their associated teaching hospitals? To what extent do such changes affect how well those schools and hospitals do their work? In this book, John A. Kastor, M.D., focuses on the academic medical centers of the University of Pennsylvania and the Johns Hopkins University, two institutions that underwent dramatic change in governance during the late 1990s.

Drawing on extensive interviews with more than three hundred administrators, physicians, and other medical professionals at Penn, Hopkins, and elsewhere, Kastor identifies the factors that influenced changes in governance at these two institutions. Chief among these, he finds, are structure, personality conflicts, and current events. This book will be of interest to administrators of teaching hospitals as well as professionals in health policy and management. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Resource!
I purchased this book several years ago when I started counting carbohydrates. A nutritionist recommened it as being the most comprehensive resource of its kind. I have found it invaluable. The fact that is not only contains prepackaged food, but fresh foods, meats, homemade items and even some common restaurants (along with many many other catagories), makes it THE perfect resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
This book is for those of us on special diets that do not want 'special' books telling us what to eat, but neglecting to tell us what not to eat, or for those of us who just want to judge for ourselves what is good (or bad) for us. This book contains very complete information, including canned foods by brand, candy, gum, alcohol beverages, foods prepared in many ways, virtually any foods, even poi. The values listed include alcohol, calories, water, protein, carbohydrates, sugar, dietary fiber, fat, saturated fatty acids, monosaturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, cholesterol, vitamins A(RE), A(IU), C, B-1, B-2, B-4, B-12, D, E, E (as alpha-tocopherol), K, niacin, folic acid, pantothenic acid. Also sodium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, potassium, phosphorus, iron, copper. Amino acids, caffeine, gluten, iodine, pectin, phytosterol, purines, salicylates, selenium, theobromine. What more could the dietary conscious want?

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowes & Church Food Values of Portions Commonly Used
I have been a diabetic for many years. My new doctor advised me to get this book so that I could count carbohydrates more accurately. It is a great book for diabetics. My new doctor can now treat me more efficiently. Thanks.

5-0 out of 5 stars At last
Too many food guides for diabetics give food equivelants in volume (i.e. cups) measure. When comparing spaghetti to ziti or large cubes to small cubes, the amount contained by a cup varies significantly. Bowes & Church's, (the first book in which I found the nutritive values by weight) had lacked sugar and monounsatured fatty acids data. That deficiency is now corrected. Some food catagories have been expanded (i.e. Varieties of summer squash are now separately listed). This is definitely the best compendium of food nutrient content that I have found.

5-0 out of 5 stars I have not found a more comprehensive food value guide
This book follows in the tradition of the prior editions which I wore out from use. It has a fabulous index and lists foods as the title states, in commonly used portions so you can put your calculator away. ... Read more

Amazon.com's Best of 2001

Early in 1998, New York Times science reporter and author Gina Kolata happened to be seated at a banquet next to the Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson. When Kolata asked Watson what was new in the world of science, he replied, "Judah Folkman and angiogenesis, that's what's new. Judah is going to cure cancer in two years."

Folkman, a longtime physician and medical researcher at Harvard University and Children's Hospital, was caught off guard by the excited news reports that followed Watson's remark, but there was good reason for excitement. For nearly four decades, when not busy doing such things as inventing the heart pacemaker and attending to hundreds of patients, Folkman had been puzzling out a peculiarity of tumors: at some point during their formation, they sent forth chemical signals that in effect "recruited" blood vessels to feed them. If those signals could be intercepted through well-targeted drugs, Folkman reasoned, and the blood supply to cancerous formations thus interrupted, then the tumors themselves might be starved to death, or at least to dormancy.

In this book, Newsday writer Robert Cooke offers an accessible account of Folkman's work on angiogenesis, or the formation of blood vessels, which may well point the way to new treatments for cancer and related illnesses. Following Folkman's roundabout trail, one marked by considerable resistance on the part of doubtful colleagues, readers will gain a sense of how medical research is conducted--and, almost certainly, a sense of wonder at the medical breakthroughs that, as James Watson hinted, are just around the corner. --Gregory McNamee ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Odyssey of Medical Innovation
This book clearly deserves many more than five stars.

Dr. Folkman's War contains many valuable insights including how to: Raise children to be outstanding people; be an astute observer about nature to unlock new lessons; pioneer in a new field of science; and be persistent about something important. When the history of medicine in the twentieth century is written, Dr. Judah Folkman will be considered one of the most important figures. This book is the most accessible and complete source of information about his remarkable life and accomplishments.

Dr. Folkman's research to date "has found applications in twenty-six diseases as varied as cancer, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, psoriasis, arthritis, and endometriosis." "Ordinarily, researchers working in any of these fields do not communicate with each other."

Angiogenesis looks at the way that capillaries are formed in response to the body's biochemistry to help and harm health. Tumors depend on this action to get the blood supply they need to grow. Wounds also rely on a similar mechanism to grow scar tissue.

I have been following Dr. Folkman's career for over twenty-five years, and heard him speak about angiogenesis just a little over two years ago. Because I felt I was well-informed, I almost skipped this book. That would have been a major mistake on my part. Dr. Folkman's War contained much new and interesting information that helped me to better understand the lessons of Dr. Folkman's life, as well as the future implications of angiogenesis.

Unknown to me, Dr. Folkman had also played a role as an innovator in implantable pacemakers, time-released drug implants, and specialized types of heart surgery before he began his serious assault on angiogenesis.

The discoveries had their beginning in 1961 when he was a draftee in a Navy lab in Bethesda, Maryland. He noticed that tumors could not grow unless they first recruited their own capillaries to bring an increased blood supply. "Over time, he convinced himself that there had to be some way to block the growth of those blood vessels." He was right, but it took a long time before he knew any of the answers.

In brief opening comments about the book, former surgeon general C. Everett Koop, M.D. and Sc.D. observed how this new science evolved. "In the 1970s, laboratory scientists didn't believe any of it." " . . . [T]he critics' objections were hushed for good in 1989." "In the 1990s, the criticisms came chiefly from the clinical side, and the pharmaceutical companies didn't want anything to do with angiogenesis."

The story is a very heart-warming one. Dr. Folkman's father was a rabbi who asked each member of the family each night what she or he had learned that day. He also constantly implored his son to "Be a credit to your people." His father clearly thought that Dr. Folkman would also become a rabbi. Having announced his attention to become a physician, his father told him, "You can be a rabbi-like doctor." This injunction was one he took to heart, often seeking out his father's counsel on how to console the families of his patients.

His first taste of how close mortality is to all of us was when his first two children inherited cystic fibrosis. The younger of the two died, and the older one needed lots of special care to deal with infections. This probably made him a better doctor, by helping him see things more from the patients' points of view.

Space constraints keep me from discussing the book's description of how angiogenesis developed, but if you like stories about trail-blazing research, you will be amply rewarded. The key hurdles are described, along with the blind alleys that were followed. Anyone reading this will see how important it is to add new skills to the study of any new subject.

I was particularly interested in the way that press reports tended to harm the progress of angiogenesis, either by annoying other scientists, attracting hucksters, or delaying key deals with potential partners. We often think about freedom of speech being helpful, but here the case is a mixed one.

My only disappointment with the book is that it does not provide as much clinical data about the drugs under testing now as has been made public. That material would have made for fascinating reading. There are also natural substances that can cause a tumor to shrink, and clinical studies have been very successful in growing and shrinking tumors for some time.

I suspect that some member of your family will live a longer, healthier life due to future treatments soon to be available using angiogenesis. This book is a great way to learn more about the subject now, so you can encourage exploration of these experimental therapies where possibly appropriate. If anyone in your family now has cancer, this book is must reading for you!

Dr. Folkman summarized the book nicely as follows: "Success can often arrive dressed as failure." "If your idea succeeds everybody says you're persistent. If it doesn't succceed, you're stubborn."

May we all live longer and healthier lives due to the emerging medical treatments using angiogenesis . . . that were helped by Dr. Folkman's persistence!

5-0 out of 5 stars Persistence & vision overcomes dogma an ignorance.
Through long, arduous practice, Buddhists believe it is possible to remove the lens of self-interest and dogma to perceive "absolute reality," with "automatic compassion." After reading Robert Cooke's biography one believes that Dr. Judah Folkman has never looked at medicine any other way.

But the emperors of the scientific establishment have never dealt kindly with the boys who can't see their robes, as Cooke points out with several examples. (The Hungarian doctor who demonstrated that deaths from childbirth fever could be eliminated if doctors washed their hands was hounded by his colleages to suicide.) Dr. Folkman's heresy was the observation that tumors can't grow without stimulating healthy tissues to supply new blood vessels.

Fortunately for all of us, Dr. Folkman's vision has been matched by his persistence in pursuing it. In following Dr. Folkman's path from his boyhood in Ohio as the son of a rabbi, to Harvard where he gained his self-confidence, to the Navy research lab where his angiogenesis hypothesis first formed, and back to Boston as a pediatric surgeon-scientist, Cooke makes what might have been a difficult and technical story into an epic adventure.

In keeping with the fashion that writing a biography in chronological order is boring and passe, Cooke instead follows parallel thematic threads in Dr. Folkman's storied career. I personally found the resulting forward and backward jumps in time distracting, but not insurmountable.

It would have been enough if this were merely a story of scientific progress and the triumph of a new idea over entrenched dogma, but it is also the story of a man whose vision is matched by his devotion to his patients. It should be required reading for all prospective medical students.

Now angiogenesis-based therapies for cancer, atherosclerosis, blindness and arthritis are on the verge of exploding on the scene and Dr. Folkman's lab at Children's Hospital Boston is ground-zero. He and the generation of doctors and researchers that he has helped to train are revolutionizing huge swaths of medicine. When it happens it will seem like it was overnight, but those of us who have read Robert Cooke's book will know it was a lifetime in the making.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Folkman is my hero -- a story better than SeaBiscuit!
This book by Robert Cooke is incredible! Mr. Cooke is able to explain to the average layperson the medical concepts of angeiogeneis conceived by the most under-valued person of our time: Dr. Judah Folkman. Dr. Folkman is to cancer what Salk was to Polio! Personally, Dr. Judah Folkman is my hero! A real hero, deserving of the Nobel Prize....and I don't speak lightly. I am a cancer patient that has recently learned that my cancer (thought was beat) has advanced to my lungs. The ONLY therapy for me is in an ANGIOGENESIS drug therapy program for a drug currently in study and labeled as "PI-88." I am just so confident this drug will work. I am the only patient with my type of cancer cell (adenoid cystic carninoma), so I am a little bit more of a lab rat for this program.

God Bless Dr. Folkman and h is incredible perserverance! His story should be a movie----a tale better than SeaBiscuit! He is my SeaBiscuit!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cure for cancer?
Chances are someone close to you has succumbed to the ravages of cancer, while you and the medical establishment could only sit by and watch the process reach its inevitable conclusion. The good news is, for nearly 40 years, Dr. Judah Folkman has been pursuing a cure for cancer -- or at least a way to fight tumors more effectively than chemotherapy or radiation -- that only until very recently has garnered serious attention. Dr. Folkman's theory is called angiogenesis, the process by which cancer cells emit an agent which triggers the growth of blood vessels to feed the growth of the cancer itself. For years Dr. Folkman's idea was basically scoffed at as the flailings of an amateur researcher, but Cooke shows how Dr. Folkman has perservered -- while maintaining his brilliant career as a physician -- and eventually, through a slow accumulation of experimental evidence, as well as the discovery of several antiangionesis agents, turned opinion around. Throughout this engaging and fascinating retelling of Folkman's journey, Cooke also provides an eye-opening account of the workings of academia, medical research, and their relationships to those Orwellian biotech companies you keep hearing about. The science is clear and vivid, the battle to defeat cancer inspiring, and the promise of victory -- thankfully, finally -- just around the corner.

2-0 out of 5 stars interesting story, but ......
I work in this field of research. I do like the story of the persistance and creativity of Judah Folkman. However, the author stumbles in describing some of the science and the intellectual contributions of others that led to some of the Folkman lab's discoveries. After reading the reviewers' praise for Mr. Cooke's "detailed research " on the book's back cover, I was diappointed by some obvious errors in the book. I believe that most of the innaccuracies are the unfortunate result of the author's failure to corroborate all of his facts. He may have been in a hurry to get the book out, but I wish that he had taken a little more time to get the science and other facts straight. ... Read more

Book Description

Managing depression safely, naturally, and without side effects

For years scientists have searched for a treatment to relieve the pain of depression and other mood disorders -- one that's safe enough for nursing mothers, children, and the elderly -- without the side effects associated with medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, and lithium. Thanks to Dr. Andrew Stoll's groundbreaking research, that search may well be over.

Stoll found that omega-3 fatty acids, already known for their importance in preventing heart disease, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancer, also play a crucial role in mental health. They regulate and enhance mood, sharpen memory, and even aid concentration and learning. Though these remarkable substances are abundant in common fish oils and other foods, the average Western diet includes far too few of the most common sources. Fortunately, our deficient diets and attendant depression can be reversed. The Omega-3 Connection provides readers with all the information they need to restore their natural balance of omega-3 fatty acids, including

  • Which omega-3-rich foods to eat
  • The most effective over-the-counter supplements
  • How to integrate flaxseed and fish oils into diet and medication plans
  • Simple recipes, supplement doses and sources, and more ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Brain Development... Without Postpartum Depression
Numerous studies have found that babies who are breastfed are smarter and healthier than babies who are bottle-fed. Now, Dr. Stoll suggests that the missing ingredient in infant formula is Omega 3 fatty acids, an essential building block for every baby's growing brain.

The down side for mothers has been that pregnancy and breast-feeding sap the mother's body, leaving her deficient in Omega 3 fatty acids... which may lead to postpartum depression. As a mother-to-be who has a history of minor depression, I was very concerned when I started to slip into anxiety spells late in my seventh month (shortly after my baby began the serious brain-building of late gestation). I began taking supplements as recommended in this book, and my mood was significantly better within a few days. After the baby was born, I had no postpartum depression.

I'm excited and I want to share the good news that my baby has Omega 3s to develop his brain... and I don't have to suffer from depression or anxiety!

4-0 out of 5 stars Facinating info, but have yet to see results with omega-3s
I read Andrew Stoll's The Omega-3 Connection about three months ago along with Donald O. Rudin's Omega-3 Oils: A Practical Guide. Stoll's book makes a strong case for the mood enhancing qualities of omega-3 oils, particularly fish oils. Dr. Stoll details convincing evidence that omega-3 oils can be helpful in treating depression, bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, ADHD, everyday stress, and even schizophrenia. Always searching for "natural" ways to treat my own anxiety and depression, I felt extremely hopeful after reading this book and ordered Stoll's OmegaBrite fish oil capsule product. After two months at 2.5 grams of OmegaBrite per day, I still have not noticed a significant difference in my mood. There are times when I think omega-3s have a mild antidepressant effect, but the feeling is so mild that I am not sure if I am imagining this or it is actually happening. I am still willing to believe that omega-3s (and Stoll's OmegaBrite product) are important in the treatment of mood disorders. However, they have not worked for me at this point so the jury is still out.

4-0 out of 5 stars good guide, but smacks of marketing
This book does present a persuasive case for the efficacy of Omega-3 in treating depression. But there's a little too much of "so you should buy our product, because it's the BEST omega-3 on the market!!!" Yes, your company's omega-3 tablets are of great quality and high concentration. But excessive promotion detracts from the scientific message of the book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good source of information
Stoll needs an editor--much of the material is repeated one or more times and often cut-and-paste is in evidence. There is much tangential information that won't be of interest to everyone in order to pad it into a full-length book. Still, it is a good source of information regarding sources of omega-3 oils and how much to take.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Read
This book is essential for anyone wanting to try using Omega-3 supplements for the treatment of bipolar and depression. Discussion on past clinical trials, information on what to look for in Omega-3 when buying and more are covered in the book. Very easy to read for everyone I think as it is not a bunch of medical verbage, more common language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness for this book
Acid/Base Made Simple was a very valuable guide during all four years of med school -- it saved me more than a few times from embarassing gaps in knowledge. Three of my residents said that they still use it as their primary reference when they encounter acid/base physiology problems. The explanations were crystal clear and the topics addressed are all clinically important ones that come up again and again in the hospital. The book has excellent diagrams, but its strongest point I thought was it's writing style. In contrast to many books on the subject, this one is written in a casual, almost conversational style that makes it so much easier to read and learn. This is one of the few books that has earned a spot on my bookshelf and will not be sold at the end of med school!

5-0 out of 5 stars Acid-Base, fluids and Electrolytes made ridiculously simple
I think Acid - Base and Electrolytes is one of the most challenging topics in Medicine . During my second year in Med. School our Head of the Department of Nephrology, on the first day of the course said that if there is one book I would like you all to follow is Acid-Base , Fluids and electrolytes made ridiculously simple. After reading this book I will say that our chief was absolutely on the money . This is a Classic book , not only for medical students but also for residents. There are many different clinical cases and the explanation on each of the cases is great . I think the most important aspect of the book is that it is an easy read .

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me.
I'm a first year PA student about to enter into the second clinical year. This "Ridculously Simple" book saved me during our nephrology unit. It made difficult topics accessible and in plain English; the questions section at the end of each chapter helps to bring concepts together clinically. I struggled with kidneys and ended up acing the test, mostly due to this book...I hear from many medical students/PA's they often refer to this book during their internal medicine rotations. Lastly, I found the neuroanatamy book by the same publishers equally as helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for the basics...
Not a bad book for the basics. It will get you by, but it does not replace a good physiology text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but could be excellent!
Ok well it seems that everyone loved this book. This is an excellent basics approach to the kidney topic. It has excellent clinical applications for hyper/hypo kal and natrimia. It also has a great section on approaching acid-base problems in a 3 step system. This was a wonderful inclusion. The one problem for those wanting to know about physiology, this book doesn't contain it! NOTHING on clearance, GFR, or Renal blood flow! If it had this it would be a 5 star. It is a complete power house if you buy it and Lippencott's physiology board review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
This is a very entertaining and interesting book about human cadavers--what happens when you die, the history of dissection, the University of Tennessee "body farm," what dead bodies can tell you about airline crashes, how bodies are used for impact testing, flaws in Dr. Pierre Barbet's studies of crucifixion found by Frederick Zugibe, the process of "organ recovery" from "beating-heart cadavers" for transplants, the survival of severed heads (guillotine and transplantation), mummies and cannibalism, etc. Roach writes in a somewhat flippant style that somehow seems appropriate for the topic, it's never quite irreverent.
My only complaint: p. 126: Roach seems to think that the FAA should force the implementation of safety measures that come out negative on a cost-benefit analysis (given the value of human life at $2.7 million, if shoulder harnesses save 15 lives over 20 years, that's not enough if it costs $669 million to implement). What she fails to recognize is the opportunity cost of such spending--$669 million spent to save 15 lives over 20 years could save thousands of lives if spent elsewhere instead. There is no infinite fund of money available to save lives at any cost.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speaking with the Dead
Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers is a very original if somewhat disturbing read. If you ever wondered what happens to a body when it dies, if you ever wondered what kind of research is being done on corpses, if you ever wondered what happens if you "donate" your body to science, then this is the book for you. If any of these topics sent a shiver down your spine (or did much worst), then I advise you to stay far away from this one.

The real charm of the book is that, while being very informative and straight to the point, Roach's writing is often humorous in a morbid way that often brought a smile to my lips. She remarks some things that I would never had even thought of and makes some jokes that, done by any other author, could have seem tasteless (in fact, her humour is what makes this book such a fascinating read).

There wasn't a single chapter in this little tome that I didn't find fascinating, but some stood out more than others. In How To Know If You're Dead, Roach examines the different theories about the human soul to try and locate its presence (is it in the heart? the brain? the liver?). In Beyond the Black Box, she explains what happens to someone who is victim of a plane crash and how experts determine the cause of the crash. In Lifer After Death, Roach explains the different stages of decomposition. And in Just A Head, Roach examines the very strange subject of decapitation.

If this all sounds morbid, well, it is. But Roach's book is so well researched and informative that it all goes down easy for the reader. Roach never shies away from the truth, no matter how gruesome it may get.

Is this one for everyone? Not nearly. The topic will put off some, while the vivid imagery with turn off many others. But if you have the heart (and stomach) to take this one in, the ride will make you discover things you never knew about death, and will confirm or finally put to rest other assumptions you could have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fun and VERY different
When you look up the term "Off the beaten path" in the dictionary, you will, without a doubt, see a copy of this book. Who would have thought a book on this subject would have been successful? Stiff is, without a doubt, a bizarre yet remarkably engaging read: not surprising since Roach is such a terrific writer. The author possesses the ingenious ability of being able to make digestible the most repulsive of subjects. Curious, yet not callus, Roach manages to ask-and yes, answer-questions often best left unspoken (keeping in mind public decorum). Furthermore, Roach is hilarious. If you like weird, funny, and not-for-the squeamish books, try "The Bark of the Dogwood--a tour of southern homes and gardens. Equally parts funny, morose, insightful, and well-done.

5-0 out of 5 stars On my way to a colonoscopy...
...I was chatting with the nurses and told them that I've been reading a fascinating book that they might be interested in. When I told them the title, a couple squirmed and the one who was going to assist at my procedure wanted some details, immediately. I thought my timing was probably a little off, but being a risk-taker, I offered a few stories. As the medication began to lull me into the twilight zone, I heard her say that she wanted to read the book and that she would take care of me (!) I lived to write this review and will be sending her a copy of the book as a thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Read
This book is so informative, funny, thorough, reverent, and all around amazing... so much so that I am recommending it to all of my friends. Like a previous post stated, Roach's prose really makes you feel as if she is your best friend (she is hysterical!), and her in-depth look at the 'curious lives' of cadavers leaves little to the imagination. Be sure to read all of the footnotes... some of the witiest comments that I have ever read are waiting within. Overall, this book is so, so good in everyway! Get it now... you won't regret it. ... Book Description

Overcoming suspicion, ridicule, and outright opposition from the American Medical Association, the osteopathic medical profession today serves the health needs of more than thirty million Americans. The DOs chronicles the development of this controversial medical movement from the nineteenth century to the present. Historian Norman Gevitz describes the philosophy and practice of osteopathy, as well as its impact on medical care. From the theories underlying the use of spinal manipulation developed by osteopathy's founder, Andrew Taylor Still, Gevitz traces the movement's early success, despite attacks from the orthodox medical community, and details the internal struggles to broaden osteopathy's scope to include the full range of pharmaceuticals and surgery. He also recounts the efforts of osteopathic colleges to achieve parity with institutions granting M.D. degrees and looks at the continuing effort by osteopathic physicians and surgeons to achieve greater recognition and visibility.

In print continuously since 1982, The DOs has now been thoroughly updated and expanded to include two new chapters addressing recent and current challenges and to bring the history of the profession up to the beginning of the new millennium. ... Read more

This is a one stop book. Renal physiology and Acid-Base Balance is explained in detail and in simple terms. Author provides various scenarios for each condition. Implications of each change in renal physiology is described in many occasions.book is divided into four section and after brief introduction major part of the book is about regulation of water and electrolyte and best part is the final chapter where acid-base disorders are explained with physiologic concepts. Relatively thick book on a single subject and therefore coverage is very good yet it is it is very easy to read and understand.Another good part is that each chapter has few questions and you can check yourself with answers provided at the end of the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review of How the Kidney Works
This book describes renal physiology and the regulation of water and electrolyte balance and then reviews various disorders of the above. The author takes a difficult subject and puts it into simple terms and gives excellent examples of the clinical implication of various renal physiologic mechanisms. There are several problems and solutions for each disorder, and these are also helpful in solidifying knowledge. The detail and physiology probably make this book most suitable for clinical and research fellows in nephrology but medical students and residents would find it useful as well. The price makes the book a real value given the amount of excellent information the book contains. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Very Best Nutrition Book
I own other nutrition books, and this is my favorite! In nursing school, my nutrition instructor, who was a registered dietitician with many years of experience, said that this was the best nutrition book on the market. Compared to the other books I have seen, I would agree. It is a wealth of information and includes both American and Canadian guidelines. There is a wonderful food composition table appendix included in the book that is very thorough nutritionally. The book covers carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and amino acids, digestion and absorption, metabolism and energy balance, overweight, underweight, and weight control, vitamins, water and minerals, nutrition through lifespan: pregnancy and infancy, childhood and adolescence, later adulthood, and many chapters on nutrition for health care issues such as renal failure, and diabetes mellitus. If I were not a nurse, I would want to own this book just for my own personal reference. I would advise anyone, whether in health care or not, to pick up a copy of this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Readable, in-depth discussion of nutrition and metabolism.
Currently, many people are becoming seriously interested in the role of nutrition in human health. Fortunately, there are many good books on nutrition and health for the interested lay person. But once one begins to understand the extreme importance of nutrition for achieving and maintaining good health where can a seriously interested lay person turn for more detailed information? The answer is to this book. Yes, this book requires some serious study, but it is quite well written and does not require a degree in chemistry or biology to follow. A dilligent lay person can gain much valuable information from it. If you are really serious about understanding the role of nutrition in human health I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best advanced nutrition book I know.
If you want (or need) to go deep into nutrition, this is the book. Very well organized and researched information. Covers in depth nutritional physiology and biochemistry. I used this book in an advanced undergraduate nutrition course and I consider it one of my prized possessions. If there is a better book on the subject, I would like to know about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best biochemical nutrition textbook!
I am a graduate student who majors in Nutrition. This is a best biochemical nutrition textbook I ever read! What I like about this textbook is: (1) relatively light weight (575 pages) for this type of textbook, yet very comprehensive. It contains from basic physiology and biochemistry to a current field such as antioxidant nutrition; (2) a large amount of well summarized figures (almost every page has al least one figure); (3) plain English; (4) each chapter concludes with annotated bibliography so that you could use this book as a sort of literature review on a specific field; (5) well-made index, so that you could use this as a sort of encyclopedia of nutrition. Title says "advanced", but I recommend this book to undergraduate students who look for explanation on the biochemistry basis in the nutrition field. ... Read more

"The key to successful weight loss doesn't require magic, grit and determination, or the moral character of a saint. It's much simpler," asserts Jane Kirby, R.D., in Dieting for Dummies, a fact-filled, fad-free dieting resource. The author represents the American Dietetic Association, a trustworthy source of scientifically sound nutrition and food information. You'll learn basic, reliable facts about all facets of weight loss, including helpful information about eating disorders, overweight children, dietary guidelines, fat replacers, calorie-shaving substitutions, a comparison of weight-loss programs, and an exposé of diet fads and scams (including some bestselling diet books). The book is organized into sections on your healthy weight; developing a healthy relationship with food; a plan for healthful living (including exercise); shopping, cooking, and dining out; and enlisting outside help. An excellent chapter on eating out spells out exactly what you should and shouldn't eat at restaurants of different kinds. As you'd expect from a For Dummies book, the writing is lively, friendly, and down-to-earth. The content is reliable and organized into accessible, easily skimmed chunks, with plenty of bulleted lists and charts making the information easy to grasp. If you've been confused by controversial diets or seduced by weight-loss fads-of-the-moment, read this book cover to cover. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and quick results!
When I bought this book I was a little skeptical whether or not it was worth the money. I have read numerous books on dieting, ect and I never really understood what they were trying to teach, but this one really hit the nail on the head, so to speak.

It shows you how to cut back safely and how not to cut too much and why. It also explains in easy terms why your body works a certain way and how to obtain what you want. For example, it explains how many calories you would need to cut back to lose X amount of weight in X amount of time. It has information on weight groups, the food pyramid, healthy weights and even a section in the back with foods listed and how many calories and fat they contain. So far I have been following the suggestions and have lost just about 40 pounds so I would definately say its worth the money! Its not hard to stick to (believe me, I HATE dieting) and you don't feel hungry all the time. It shows you how to start eating right and how to indulge when you crave. Its definately not a diehard-drop-the-weight-now book in any means. Learning how to eat right and how to eat your favorite foods and how to learn when to say when. I have since learned how to eat better and how your body sends signals when its full, truly full, and when its really hungry and not just craving that piece of cake you were eyeing. LOL... A way to finally lose the weight and how to maintain it is what I was looking for without pills and fad diets, and this is the book. Definately not a book for 'dummies'...

4-0 out of 5 stars Dieting for Dummies
I think this book is an excellent resource. I completely dissagree with the customer from Ann Arbor. As the title indicates, this book is intended to give the general public basic background about healthy eating and weight loss. This sound, research-based information is sorely needed in response to fad diet claims so prominent these days. And, by the way, eggs do not cause heart disease, and neither does dietary cholesterol. It is well known that saturated fat is the culprit. Maybe you should have read the book instead of returned it?

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great
I am really learning a lot about my eating habits and better choices/ways to eat from this book. It's easy to read and has an easy to follow format that is addictive in itself. I'm making life changes and this book was right on time to help me in that pursuit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative read
This book was my first read from the for dummies series. I found it informative. Although some of the content was a repeat of what I have already read as a chronic dieter, I still found the information helpful. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who would like to learn the ins and outs without the mumbo jumbo. It also has helpful nutritional info at the back.
