Magnesium is one of the most important nutrients for human health, yet it may be the most overlooked -- despite the fact that the majority of Americans suffer from magnesium deficiency. As Dr. Mildred Seelig -- probably the world's leading expert on the role of magnesium in human health -- points out in this invaluable book magnesium deficiency is a major cause of both heart disease and diabetes as well as a significant number of other common ailments. If you are one of the majority of Americans who suffer from magnesium deficiency you undoubtedly suffer from numerous unpleasant symptoms and are at serious risk of dying prematurely. Yet you can alleviate these symptoms and remove this risk simply by taking supplemental magnesium as recommended by Dr. Seelig. As a research chemist, I beg you to get this book and follow Dr. Seelig's advice. Your health, and even your life, may be at stake if you don't. This is one of the most important books currently available. I wish that everyone, including every physician, would read it and heed it's advice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition in pregnancy and lactation
My edition is now an antique so this review is not current. I was fortunate enough to have the author as instructor in a course with the same title at UW School of Nursing in 1980 and I can safely say it is the single course which has made a daily difference in my life ever since. Worthington-Roberts has great integrity and this permeates a piece of professional literature in a way one seldom sees. I was thrilled to see that the book is available in a current edition and would recommend anything by this author on the subject of maternal and child nutrition without reservation. Today I practice as a staff midwife and breastfeeding specialist in a hospital in Norway but still find English language sources to be the best on such topics as this. There are now many, many books on pregnancy, breastfeeding and lactation, but there will always be a place on my bookshelf for this one.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a lay text. A book for professionals in physiology only
The only thing I got out of the book was that a lactating mother needs more protein and the increase can be satisfied by drinking 3-31/2 cups more milk a day. There was also a need for more folic acid and some other vitamins that can be supplied by eating more green leafy vegetables. I was hoping for practical daily nutrition suggestions and there were none. ... Read more

I bought this book as required for my organic synthesis course. I am dissapointed with how little detail is given for each mechanism. Also the examples given are also very difficult to work out and no solution is givenfor each example.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good book.
March's book is a tome, so I'm not sure how you could not use most of the same kinds of reactions that March uses.March's book is comprehensive, but Mundy and Ellerd's book is not bad because it is not comprehensive.Itis what it says it is- a complilation of name reactions. It doesn't gointo as much detail as March does, but it puts the name reactions in a niceformat, and that's just fine and dandy if that's how you're trying to goabout things. They put the name reactions in alphabetical order, give ageneric reaction, a mechanism, and many examples of that kind of reaction.

Book Description

The Huang Di nei jing su wen, known familiarly as the Su wen, is a seminal text of ancient Chinese medicine, yet until now there has been no comprehensive, detailed analysis of its development and contents. At last Paul U. Unschuld offers entry into this still-vital artifact of China's cultural and intellectual past.

Unschuld traces the history of the Su wen to its origins in the final centuries B.C.E., when numerous authors wrote short medical essays to explain the foundations of human health and illness on the basis of the newly developed vessel theory. He examines the meaning of the title and the way the work has been received throughout Chinese medical history, both before and after the eleventh century when the text as it is known today emerged. Unschuld's survey of the contents includes illuminating discussions of the yin-yang and five-agents doctrines, the perception of the human body and its organs, qi and blood, pathogenic agents, concepts of disease and diagnosis, and a variety of therapies, including the new technique of acupuncture. An extensive appendix, furthermore, offers a detailed introduction to the complicated climatological theories of Wu yun liu qi ("five periods and six qi"), which were added to the Su wen by Wang Bing in the Tang era.

In an epilogue, Unschuld writes about the break with tradition and innovative style of thought represented by the Su wen. For the first time, health care took the form of "medicine," in that it focused on environmental conditions, climatic agents, and behavior as causal in the emergence of disease and on the importance of natural laws in explaining illness. Unschuld points out that much of what we surmise about the human organism is simply a projection, reflecting dominant values and social goals, and he constructs a hypothesis to explain the formation and acceptance of basic notions of health and disease in a given society. Reading the Su wen, he says, not only offers a better understanding of the roots of Chinese medicine as an integrated aspect of Chinese civilization; it also provides a much needed starting point for discussions of the differences and parallels between European and Chinese ways of dealing with illness and the risk of early death.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lost in the Contradictions of Misunderstanding
Robert Feld is welcome to embrace Unschuld's highly scholarly, hard to read, disjointed text. My primary point is that this is NOT the Nei Jing, it is not the text, it is not readable as such, and it is not a guide for would-be doctors interested in practicing based on Nei Jing. That much should be more clear in the description of the book, but it is not. It should be called "Essays on Nei Jing."

As for feeling buised over a lack of 'modern' solutions, something I never mentioned, or an under-esteemed 'holism'--the main point is that the original holistic theory is obscured behind the great many errors in the Nei Jing.

This is in fact a late stage text, not a nacent one, the assumptions of scholars aside. References to Mawangdui texts as the beginning are themselves fallacious. The origin of the system, and its holism, are deeper, older, and not contradictory like the Nei Jing essays. They reflect a holistic system of knowledge heavily obscured in the late-stage texts we (and all of Chinese history) received.

So, the 'scoffing.' Those who find Unschuld's tone abrasive, and we are many, will use this term to refer to the haughty modern scholarly quality that exudes from the pages; the debunker's knife, if you will. Though modern knowledge advances through dividing and studying the parts, there are other methods of studying nature, and certainly these ideas were not fabricated in a modern-worldview workshop. They were not put together in pieces, and animated by the fuel of superstition, as Unschuld often makes it seem.

I look forward to Unschuld's further works, including the forthcoming full translation of the text, and any ideas he has about the relative age of the various essays. Following a path of 'dividing instead of lumping,' they are not that dear to my heart, just to my mind. But what else are scholars to do? The elephant is not known to those who feel a wall under their hand.

5-0 out of 5 stars We need more scholarly books like this
Unschuld is thorough and thought-provoking. I will read the Suwen a little differently now, after reading Unschuld's book.

I don't agree with every conclusion the author makes, but I love mulling over the issues he brings up.

Yes, this book is scholarly, and you may need a dictionary here and there. But is that a bad thing?

It is not for someone who just wants to practice in blissful ignorance. It is not for a beginning student. It is not for someone who wants to mystify Chinese medicine.

It is for those who want to find deeper ways of looking at our medicine, and for those who like a little challenge to their own way of thinking. I will happily pre-order any book Unschuld writes.

5-0 out of 5 stars An important resource on the history of Chinese medicine
An important scholarly review of a milestone medical classic, Professor Unschuld is his usual through self in presenting this material with copious references to support his conclusions. The acutal translation of the Su Wen is to follow in three volumes, this book reviews sources and cultural influences that helped shape the Su Wen. Considering the complex nature of the material in that work, this book is invaluable to the understanding of the Su Wen itself.

While not a book for the general public looking for lay information on Chinese medicine, this is a must read for those interested in the history of medicine, Chinese culture, and the influence prevailing cultural paradigms can have on even medical thought. Students and practitioners of Chinese medicine should also find this book valuable as there is so little documented information on the roots of this rapidly growing healing tradition.

I would also like to add that I do not believe Unschuld set out to do a hatchet job on holistic concepts as one reviewer seemed to think. I am a supporter of such concepts and do not always agree with everything Unschuld concludes. I feel however, that although one may disagree with some of his conclusions, one cannot argue with the scholarly rigor with which he supports those conclusions. This is a great book for the right audiance and will undoubtedly stand as a valuable reference for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Researching the Origins
Mr. Iannone is free to dislike any book or any author, and to say so. However, his review so misrepresents the "Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen: Nature, Knowledge, Imagery in an Ancient Chinese Medical Text" that it demands a response. Mr. Iannone's description of this excellent text is so far from the facts and purposes of the text that readers who had not seen the text could not know its content, or understand its intent. We learn what Mr. Iannone thinks but nearly nothing of the book itself.

It is critical to note that Dr. Unschuld scoffs at nothing. Dr. Unschuld apparently fails to treat the theme of "holistic" Chinese medicine with the hands-off reverence Mr. Iannone apparently demands. But this is Mr. Iannone's ax to grind and scoffing at holism is neither Dr. Unchuld's theme nor a fair description of the text. Chinese medicine evolved to serve the universal desire for a long and happy life not to answer the fragmentation of modern life the philosophy of holism attempts to address. To accuse Dr. Unschuld of scoffing at his sources is no different than accusing the ancient Chinese of failing to satisfy the needs of a time and place they could not have imagined. Not only were the social and philosophical milieu to which holism responds two millenia in the future but China in the era of the "Huang Di Nei Jing" had its own philosophies and these, Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism, are the philosophical currents Dr. Unschuld's research considers, not because he scoffs at holism, but because these were the concerns of the culture from which the "Huang Di Nei Jing" derives.

While Mr. Iannone clearly feels that some darling of his own desire has been abused, that is again Mr. Iannone's response, not a description of the text. Indeed, perhaps the most considerable disservice in Mr. Iannone's review is the impression it gives readers that Dr. Unschuld's "Huang Di Nei Jing" is merely an opinion piece, not more than a viewpoint. It is not. It is the result of the largest East-West scholarly enterprise ever undertaken; it is the result of the largest collection of artifacts and textual references ever assembled in regard to a seminal Chinese text. It is the result of expertise drawn from many sources, many scholars and disciplines. The text does indeed point-out contradictions within the corpus of the surviving text but these are described as windows into the creation of an as-yet unfinished human enterprise, not the debunking of a philosophy of the distant future.

The "full text" (as if ancient documents were books to be pulled from a shelf) is not present, not as Mr. Iannone implies, to hide some holistic gem, but because this is the introductory volume, the preface if you will, of a multi-volume series that will include, not only textual sources but concordances, indexes and further commentaries. What the review hides from the reader is that direct quotations of the sources are plentiful, well-referenced and perfectly directed to the themes discussed.

What the "Huang Di Nei Jing Su Wen: Nature, Knowledge, Imagery in an Ancient Chinese Medical Text" accomplishes is an overview of what has been revealed by a vast research into the extant sources. It is not a text for everyone; it is certainly not a text for someone hoping to resolve the contradictions and difficulties of life in technological societies. It is however an ideal book for those who would look at Chinese medicine through its sources. For those who want to see the roots of
today's Chinese medicine rich with the patina of an ancient time and uncensored by modern fashion and commercial expectation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another required work by Unschuld
This is not a book to read if one wants to learn or understand the roots of Chinese medicine, but it is excellent if one is researching the many ways in which scholars can scoff at ancient thought.

If you are thick-enough skinned through broad study to withstand his caustic, debunker's conclusions, it is a very worthwhile book to have--if for no other reason than for the appended material on the seven or eight chapters added hundreds of years later to the Han-era Su Wen--from which have been derived a range of complex chronological acupuncture applications of curiosity to some.

Like his earlier Nan Jing translation, this is a scholarly work that is thick as paste at catching the holistic argument for the theory. In that book, Unschuld was comprehensive but maddeningly inconclusive--damning through a show of the controversies about interpretation over the centuries--while notably not supplying the relevant chronological data (there is some information in the preface). In this text, Su Wen, he damns through a show of contradictions in the text itself, prefering the view that there is after all no 'right' answer, since this is primitive sympathetic magic and little more. This latest work reeks with the haughtiness and grandeur of 'real' medical knowledge.

Unlike Unschuld's Nan Jing, his Su Wen is not at all 'readable' as such...it is a collection of essays on issues. The full text or anything like it is NOT present, though there are copious quotations used throughout to demonstrate contradictions, in order to show the developmental confusion of the authors. These confusions are certainly there: but Unschuld is certain in his view that they are nacent--that the theory is not much older than the Su Wen itself.

Three stars, because if you need it, you can bear with it, but if you are looking for something else, this ain't it! ... Read more

Book Description

At a time of increased interest and renewed shock over the Tuskegee syphilis experiments, Acres of Skin sheds light on yet another dark episode of American medical history. In this disturbing expose, Allen M. Hornblum tells the story of Philadelphia's Holmesburg Prison. For more than two decades, from the mid-1950s through the mid-1970s, inmates were used, in exchange for a few dollars, as guinea pigs in a host of medical experiments.
Based on in-depth interviews with dozens of prisoners as well as the doctors and prison officials who performed or enforced these experimental tests, Hornblum paints a disturbing portrait of abuse, moral indifference, and greed. Cantral to this account are the millions of dollars many of America's leading drug and consumer goods companies made available for the all too eager doctors seeking fame and fortune through their medical experiments.

In addition to testing innocuous commerical products such as detergents, shampoos and diet drinks, the experiments at Holmesburg evolved into a far more dangerous corrupted human laboratory. Hundreds of prisoners were subjected to painful skin hardening experiments, fingernail extraction studies, chemical warfare agents, and frighteningly high does of dioxin and radioactive isotopes. Many of the test subjects became ill, required hospitalization and are scarred for life. However, as prisoners were viewed by corporate America and US government as valuable "raw materials" for product development.

In often graphic detail, Acres of Skin exposes what really happened behind the locked doors of this American prison where men were treated like laboratory animals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Shocking Expose Relevant in Today's World
And you thought that horrible "medical" experiments on humans only took place in Germany and Japan during World War II?This exhaustively researched and documented book about using prisoners in Pennsylvania as guinea pigs to test the safety and efficacy of various types of medical, pharmacutical, cosmetic, and military products during the post-war years was an enormous surprise to this reader.

How so many highly respected and educated Americans could take part in these such immoral behavior is extremely instructive in light of the involvement of American military reservists in the recent Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq.Apparently normal human beings taking part in abberant behavior as a result of certain unusual circumstances, occurred in Nazi Germany and Japan during the war, in Pennsylvania during the post-war years, and now at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq.Although the physicians and scientists in this book were studying the effects of pharmacuticals on human beings, often with horrific results, this book is a fascinating study of the persons conducting the experiments and how they came to justify their actions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fluff
My god man. How much fluff can you put into one book. Mr. Hornblum, I have so much information to attain and so many books waiting on a list to be read that anything with useless time wasting fluff, aka long drawn out paragraphs, automatically goes on my "how not to write a book" list. I am sorry but your book made me more frustrated than enlightened, with all of your redundant repeats of what people said, told in eight differing ways, I am not sure if you thought the audience needed this much repeating or if you just needed to add a couple 20 pages to the final draft for appearances. But nonetheless I cannot sit and waste my precious time reading words of nothingness when there is an eternity of usefull information sitting out there waiting for me. *No arrogance intended, "I" as in us, humans.* I just don't see any excuse for this. Out of the 100% of book I would say there is about 25-35% of usefull concise information in it. Au Revoir`

I know the author of the book. He has a strong personality, the same time a kind and loving person! He went through many difficulties for publishing this book but none stopped him from revealing the truth!

4-0 out of 5 stars Shocking!
We are all aware of the nuclear experiments done during the cold war, right? Well insight shows from this book that many prisoners and people of lower social classes were experimental guinea pigs in the name of Modern Science. It is horrifying to read, and yet interesting at the same time. We also brought over experimental Nazi Doctors from the Holocaust to help the US Government on some experiments and were even given alias names to keep their identities and whereabouts secret. This is even happening today believe it or not, and it is horrifying to think what they have done during the Cold War, I come to think, what ... are they doing now? It's a scary thought!

5-0 out of 5 stars New York Times is wrong: very solid book.
I looked up the negative New York Times book review to see what Higbie's problem was. She thinks Hornblum is biased because he supports "prison reform." The book sticks quite close to the issue of medical experiments in prison, which must be at the very least something in prison in need of "reform". Higbie is also offended by the comparison to Nazi medical practices. But that's not exaggeration by Hornblum. As the book relates, the Nazi doctors at Nuremberg successfully avoided the death penalty by arguing that their own pointless torture experiments were similar to that conducted by U.S. doctors in U.S. prisons.

It's an excellent book. The book focuses on the specific prison, but has a lengthy chapter on experiments on prisoners throughout the U.S.

My only real criticism is the optimistic ending of chapter 3 that the FDA banned prisoner experimentation in the 1980s. As far as I can tell, the regulation was suspended at passage and then repealed in 1997. Fifty years after Nuremberg, experiments on prisoners unable to give informed consent continues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars also good book for enthusiasts
I am only an enthusiast who feels almost seek of all wrong information about nutrition. Finally I got this book and recommend it warmly.

First to clear some things: if you are looking for fun book with popular style go away! This book is purely scientific and dedicated to specialized schools.

But if you have patience, and if you have some basic chemistry knowledge, and if you are willing to do effort to do your best reasoning to pull SOME of the information from this book (because you will not understand everything), make good notes about it, then and only then, you will be able to: understand roughly what happens when you eat something or at least have some sort of impression where is science got to in researching the processes! So if you are out of this field like me, be ready NOT to understand most of the formulas, but what you WILL understand is so huge that you should buy this book and devote a month or two to consistent and careful reading - it will pay off many times!

Beware jet, the absorption and metabolism processes are very complex and still not understood completely, but after this book you will put to trash most of your so called information from magazines and popular books. The book is written by about 50 doctors and revised by about 50 other doctors, seemingly the experts in the appropriate fields. Also you will find very good chapters on energy balance that would lead you directly to very important conclusions about various diets.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete and objective nutrition source I have seen
If you want ALL the scientific facts about nutrition and metabolism, you need this textbook. In researching the metabolic effects of a low carbohydrate diet, I found the answers in this text because of the objectivity and completeness of the information presented. Other very popular nutrition texts were no help because they focus only on the politically correct high carb, low fat diet research, and do not even mention studies performed on diets with varying combinations of carbohydrate and fat. As a physician I was never taught that saturated fat in the diet raises HDL (good) cholesterol. This text, but not others, explains why. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Clinicians & Public Healh Professionals
George Rosen's chronology of the development of public health in A History of Public Health is a MUST read for not only public health professionals, but clinicians, health administrators and any one even remotely interested in how mankind has responded to the threat of infectious disease. His very detailed presentation of the facts takes the reader back to the study of Hippocrates as he wrote the epic writings of EPIDEMICS I, EPIDEMICS II, and AIRS, WATERS AND PLACES. By placing the reader within the historical context of the period he is reviewing, the reader gains a better understanding and appreciation for the actions (or in some cases, IN-actions) of key individuals and governments. Mr. Rosen very eloquently describes how this area of PUBLIC HEALTH is actually a multi-disciplinary science, which consists of medicine, social science and others (such as engineering, public administration and economics). Rosen's unique style of presenting the facts is very direct, concise and full of detail. His thorough examination of the elements that contributed to what we know as PUBLIC HEALTH today, is thorough and informative. If there must be one weakness of the book, it is that this is a complete chronology of public health as viewed through a WESTERN, positivist view. Very little is mentioned on Eastern, traditionalist medicine in any form or fashion. However, one of the most comprehensive books on this subject ever written and one that is a MUST for all involved in the public health field.

5-0 out of 5 stars a simply wonderfull book that captivates
I have not come across a history book in the medical field that is so scholarly and so readable. The fact that George Rosen cared so deeply about contemporary health problems shine through this well referenced volume. It should be on the shelves of every public health practitioner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
Beverages in Nutrition and Health has been an excellent reference for my work in the food industry as a formulator of nutritional beverages and food products.Anyone interested in health, nutrition and food sciences will be brought up to date on a broad scope of beverage topics including nutritional research, developmental and clinical medicine, beverage manufacturing, government regulations and marketing trends.I appreciated the wide range of expertise and viewpoints presented by the contributing authors. It truly covers a full spectrum: fruit and tomato juices, coffee, tea, cocoa, milk, alcohol, infant formula, bottled water, soft drinks, weight management, elderly nutritional support, rehydration, sport and performance beverages. It is not a stuffy text at all!Instead, it is a refreshing and relevant mix of research, government and industry voices that speak on the past, present and future evolution of beverages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nutrition of beverages fills a gap!
This unique and well-written book reviews the health effects of a wide variety of beverages, including alcohol, human milk, cow's milk, water, fruit and vegetable juices, coffee, tea, cocoa, soft drinks, and sport drinks. A book about beverages, and not foods, is unusual, but fills a much needed gap in the fields of food science and nutrition. It is essential reading for individuals in the food and beverage industry. As an academic who conducts research about the impact of diet on health, I find this an excellent resource on beverages.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
We all drinks beverages every day. Yet, surprising as it may seem, there is no single book that focuses on this subject. This book is therefore a very welcome arrival on the food scene. The authors of this book are international experts on their areas. The book is wide in scope, covering the major types of beverages. But at the same time the reader is given enough detail to learn what the topic is all about as well as recent developments. The book is an invaluable aid for those involved in new product development. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ
This book is an eye-opener. Robert Cohen explains in "layman-ese" why humans have no real need for cow's milk. He also demonstrates that the people in power in our government are more interested in lining their pockets than they are in our health. The conflicts of interest and levels of corruption within the FDA and USDA are frightening. I already had some education in nutrition and had my doubts about dairy products, but this book has raised another concern....I now think twice about ANY label that I read or about any "claims" made by our government or the mainstream media. Even those who are sucked in by the dairy industry advertising and are skeptical of dairy "critics" will be convinced with the overwhelming evidence that Robert Cohen presents. He is very thorough and has the documents and references to back himself up. Anyone who has a real interest in being healthy should read this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lacking content
I recently became interested in learning more about milk when I stumbled upon a website claiming that milk is horrible for you. I ended up purchasing this book so that I could learn about the dangers of milk.
I was disappointed with this book, because it is not a very good introduction to the topic. It is a short summary, and although references are given, the book lacks explanation for most of the symptoms listed. This book would be more appropriate for children/teenagers. If you are looking for a thorough and convincing investigation into the hazards of drinking milk, this is not your book. At least, it didn't convince me. Also, in my opinion, the price for this book is about twice what it should be.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Science - Buyer Beware
Natural milk -- without growth hormones, antibiotics, and other additives -- is one of the most perfect foods on Earth. Numerous societies around the world keep dairy livestock, drink a lot of milk each day, and are a whole lot healthier than the average American. The world's nomadic pastoralists and agro-pastoralists who drink large amounts of plain milk every day tend to have longer, stronger bones and sturdier teeth, lack osteoporosis, live longer, and have rosy complexions. The difference is the growth hormones and other dangerous additives that the modern milk industry feeds and injects cattle. It's not the MILK that causes disease, but the CHEMICALS in milk. I repeat: the MILK is GOOD for you, but the ADDITIVES are deadly. This book would have you throw out the baby with the bath, which is ridiculous! You don't have to stop drinking milk in order to avoid the problems caused by milk additives, if you simply buy milk that doesn't have any additives in it!!! Does that make sense, or does that make sense? It turns out this author wants people to stop drinking milk because he is an animal rights activist and has some sort of very odd ideological agenda involving abhorrence of milk in general. Milk is GOOD FOR YOU! Just make sure you drink organic milk that clearly states there are no growth hormones, antibiotics, etc. in it! Commercial milk with all the additives truly is deadly--so are a host of other foods with additives. But natural milk the way God made it is healthy and a perfect food. It is a shame that this author has written a book that is bound to confuse people about milk. Organic milk and raw milk do not have any chemicals in them, and are really good for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep a copy on your desk to educate friends & coworkers.
Succinct, enjoyable, quickly assimilated - a gratifying and possibly life-saving read. This book provides a fun and quick overview of the evidence and allegations against cow's milk. Don't be fooled by the cover and title, this book is too technical for young readers, although they'll enjoy the pictures while an adult absorbs and relates the information.

For those unfamiliar with the huge and undeniable body of evidence against cow's milk, I hope this book to be an eye-opener that leads its readers to further research the topic for themselves. Every statement in this book is followed by a solid reference; mostly science journal references. Being only an overview, the volume of references in "Milk A - Z" touches only the tip of the iceberg.

For those familiar with the mound of studies about milk's dangers, this book is a great overview, and brings up at least a few new points to nearly any health conscious reader. Because the evidence and number of studies against milk are so overwhelming, I've found it difficult to even begin to recall or portray all of the allegations to those uneducated. "Milk A - Z" will be a great book to have on hand for every friend or patient I attempt to begin educating about milk's dangers. My husband and I both plan to keep a copy out in open view on our desks at work to open the eyes of all lookyloos.

"A - Z" even has a fun quiz at the end. I'm going to give a copy of this book to my child's school. They've already been resistant to my bringing in science journal studies to refute the milk propaganda they give my kid annually. I wonder whether they'll shelf this book?

5-0 out of 5 stars SIMPLE & TRUE
Whoever doesn't believe in Mr. Cohen's book (*laughing*). Good Luck later on in life because no one really cares if you drink it or not. It is *YOUR* choice to drink milk and you'll soon enough be a victim to these diseases.

On the otherhand, you can choose a safer choice and completely abolish dairy products. What about all the other third-world countries? Do they drink milk? I personally stopped dairy products and have noticed one improvement - NO ACNE.

Keep drinking milk and make sure you come give me a *KISS* when you end up with osteoporosis, weak bones, kidney stones, calcium deficiency, hypertension, colon cancer. END ... Read more

Book Description

Biotechnology instructors require currency, sound pedagogy and a brief objective introduction to a broad range of topics and technologies. Students need an accessible and clear presentation along with hot topics and real-world examples. Susan Barnum meets all these requirements and needs in this second edition of her enormously popular text, BIOTECHNOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION, Second Edition.Barnum offers a broad view of biotechnology, integrating historical and modern topics. She then describes the processes and methods used to manipulate living organisms or the substances and products from these organisms for medical, agricultural, and industrial purposes. Using case studies and examples, the author rounds out discussions by detailing the technology and how it is applied, including discussions on the implications of biotechnology in such areas as gene therapy, medicine, agriculture, marine biology, and forensics.More complex and difficult-to-teach topics are given special coverage, by providing outlines, bulleted lists, and tables for simplifying and clarifying topics such as immunology, construction of recombinant DNA molecules, relevant lab techniques, monoclonal antibodies, and plant transformation/regeneration. Besides the addition of color, this new edition places more information in boxes to focus on the process of science, the accomplishments of researchers in the field, and real-world examples of biotechnology. In addition, Susan Barnum extends her already excellent objective coverage of the ethical and social implications of biotechnology by focusing on the most relevant topics in a sidebar in each chapter. Commercial, economical, and medical effects of current biotechnology practices are also made clearer and more relevant for students. ... Read more
