Book Description REAL ANSWERS TO CLERKSHIP QUESTIONS The Student-to-Student Guide Reviews (5)
1) Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient by Ferri because you need something to help you take care of patients. First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship isn't great for managing patients or working them up 2) Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia because you need something for drug information (if you have epocrates, then you don't necessarily need this). First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship doesn't have much about drugs. Another plus is it's fairly cheap. 3) Internal Medicine Clerkship: 150 Biggest Mistakes because you need something that gives you the nuts and bolts of the rotation. This book tells you how to preround, give great oral case presentations, prepare complete write-ups, and impress during attending rounds. A lot of tips on how to get great evaluations. Not much of this is is in First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship. 4) Access to uptodate or some other medicine reference to help you work up patients. 5) Pretest book - you need to do questions before the shelf exam. Bottom line is First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book but you need other things to help you do well during the rotation. Good luck!

Book Description Approaches neurologic disease just as you would approach the patient! Adams and Victor's PRINCIPLES OF NEUROLOGY, 7th Edition, begins with a detailed exposition of the symptoms and signs of disordered nervous function, just as you would begin with symptoms as presented by a patient. The text logically proceeds to syndromes and then to a description of all the main categories and types of disease that express themselves by each syndrome. Reviews (7)
Magnificent.
The human brain is so complex that no two of us have identical capabilities or limitations; but we all have limitations. Most of us are fortunate to have limitations slight enough so that we learn just with the usual help of parents, friends, teachers and community to transcend or work around our limitations and lead full, productive lives as adults. However, a significant fraction of children have limitations severe enough to need extra help. There's where the trouble starts. The problems usually get noticed in nursery school, kindergarten or first grade. Unfortunately, most such children's problems get pigeonholed into one of a small number of descriptive phrases, such as "hyperactive", "dyslexic", "autistic", "attention deficit disorder", "adacemically challenged", or some such. By and large, these descriptions are usually grossly correct descriptions of observed behavior, but they are frequently incomplete, and distressingly often they are wrong. For example, it is essentially impossible for a neurologist working with a psychiatrist to determine whether a child less than six years old is actually autistic, but four- and five-year olds are routinely labelled "autistic." And once these labels are applied, they tend to stick; this can lead to incomplete help, or help of the wrong kind. These failures are not the fault of teachers, social workers, psychologists or physicians. They come about because accurate differential diagnosis of the hundreds of different neurological and biochemical problems that can cause behavioral problems is extraordinarily difficult, requiring more extended observation, and in many cases more psychological and neurological testing, than can be made available to all the children with problems. But if the problem is misdiagnosed or incompletely diagnosed, the help that's given to the child is unlikely to be as effective as if an accurate diagnosis were known. Parents cannot replace professionals, but they can and should supplement professionals in these situations. Parents observe their children in a wider variety of circumstances, and for more of the time, than any professional can hope to do. By propiding accurate descriptions of the variations in a child's behavior depending on the circumstances in which the child is placed, parents can greatly assist neurologists and psychologists in making an accurate diagnosis. But what's relevant? Every professional is used to being deluged with irrelevancies from his or her clients. To be able to provide information that's relevant and helpful, the parents need to have some idea of how the brain works, the ways in which brain function can be impaired, the extent to which children compensate for such impairments on their own, and what behaviors may indicate a problem that falls partly or completely outside the conventional pigeonholes. For parents whose young children are said to have intellectual or emotional problems of any sort, this book is *MUST* reading, even if it takes a year to read it. The basic knowledge of neurology given in this book is enough to let parents decide whether the behaviors they see are fully consistent with the label that's being pinned on the child, or whether further exploration, and perhaps different treatment or assistance, may be called for. This still leaves the problem of where such parents can go for more advice and help; that I can't provide an answer to. But at least the parents in such cases can search for additional professional advice. In short, if your young child has a problem in school, read this book, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes you! ... Read more

Book Description This is the first book written by an experienced clinician that gives a step-by-step treatment guide for parents and doctors based on the understanding that ASD is a complex biomedical illness resulting in significant brain malnutrition. Dr. McCandless, whose grandchild with autism has inspired her "broad spectrum approach," describes important diagnostic tools needed to select appropriate treatment programs. Her book explains major therapies newly available and identifies safe and effective options for parents and physicians working together to improve the health of these special children. Now in a second edition, the book has new material and includes an index. Reviews (28)
The book then deals extensively with the steps involved in healing the injuries. Dr. McCandless walks the reader through gastrointestinal healing measures, removing heavy metals, restoring proper immune function, and healing the STARVING brain. You will shake your head in amazement both at the amount of helpful and hopeful information in this book, as well as in absolute awe at the lack of comprehension that most medical, dental, and nursing practitioners have concerning the contemporary state of causation, pathology, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders. I work in a practice that has successfully treated almost 100 children utilizing the principles outlined by Dr. McCandless. All the children have improved to varying degrees. Some have almost totally "recovered", others have shown islands of significant improvement, but ALL have responded positively. This is good, progressive, modern health care. It is not "alternative" treatment. It is correct treatment to address an acute illness or "insult" to a child's entire brain, body, and self. These interventions have also proven tremendously helpful in our treatment of 200 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders. I especially appeal to my nursing colleagues: READ THIS BOOK. In so many situations, We are the professionals advising mothers about conception and prenatal care; administering immunizations; counseling parents about the use of antibiotics; teaching about dental care; providing care in pediatrician's offices, or in our own pediatric, psychiatric, and general health care practices. If we do not avail ourselves of this information, we are part of the problem, and NOT part of the answer. If we are ignorant of the issues surrounding vulnerbility and causation, we are directly contributing to the epidemic of Autism Spectrum Disorders. In the future, we will look back on the pioneering work of Jaquelyn McCandless, and her colleagues such as Teresa Binstock, and the innovative professionals associated with DAN! and similar organizations, and know that this was indeed a turning point in the history of medicine and nursing. We have purchased several dozen copies of this book and have distributed it to parents and professionals, and they have been amazed. Parents intuitively know there is much truth to be found in this book. Professionals who read it with an open mind often come around and start to pay attention to data rather than dogma. Invest a few hours reading this book. It will change the life of someone you love, or someone with whose care and development you are entrusted.
Be sure to provide behavioral and biomedical intervention for your child on the spectrum. Both together make all the difference in the world. (...)

Book Description The former editor-in-chief of the French magazine PowerMag, author and illustrator Frédéric Delavier is currently a journalist for the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle and a contributor to several other muscle publications, including Mens Health Germany. Reviews (80)
The book is broken down into seven major muscle groups: arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs, buttocks, and abdomen. Within each muscle group are multiple exercises, each comprised of detailed anotomical illustrations, instructions on performing the exercises, and key information such as variations (for specific focus on particular muscles) and warnings (to aviod injury). Using this book, one could easily select a variety of exercises to build a total body workout program. The selection of exercises also allows for some routine variation to keep one's workout from getting stale. The illustrations are of an exellent quality, as are the materials. The pages are of heavyweight paper, with a semi-glossy finish. Although I rated this title highly, I did so with the understanding that it suits a very specific purpose, and is not a general purpose introduction or guide to weight training. This is an ANATOMY REFERENCE, specific to selected weight training exercises. It does not contain any other information concerning weight training, diet, exercise, etc. In fact, there is not even a brief introduction by the author, simply the reference material itself. But, in terms of its intended purpose, it is an excellent reference. If you already have some sort of "Bodybuilding Encyclopedia", you probably already posess much of the information contained in this title. Having no interest in the history, self-promotion, and general testosterone driven attitudes of many of those types of titles (as well as the phonebook sized package), I much prefer this concise book as an exercise reference.
I saw the book in the gym once, which surprised me because it is not a training book. It does not tell you how to choose a sequence of exercises on a particular day or for a particular goal. You would not need to carry the book to the gym to remember the steps of execution of an exercise. The best usage for the book is enhancing you guessing of hitting a particular muscle with a specific exercise. The exercise list in this book in not inclusive or perfect and only depicts what the author perceives as common. For example, the book does not tell you whether to choose machines or freestyle exercises, nor does it tell you how to perform a compound exercise that eliminates many unnecessary separate and partial exercises.
I've had friends come over only to pick this book up and sit there, gazing like cows at an oncoming train. It's that good. I believe it's a must for someone who is strongly into weight training/ bodybuilding, or any of the names you prefer to use. ... Read more

I have been out of school for about 3 years and I still occassionally refer to this book when encountering some classes of drugs and this is a great reference to have. I would highly recommend this text to anyone, that is especially if you can't be in one of his classes.
Section I is a self contained unit in pharmacokinetics with enough detail for any non-prescribing rehab professional. I am sure prescribing clinicians would also find these explanations clear and helpful in deciphering the more involved pharmacology texts. Section II: CNS, deals with not only the pharmacology but offers an excellent review of the CNS organization and neurotransmitters. I very much enjoyed the section explaining the blood-brain barrier which is clear and removes all mystery. The clinical case studies offered for each specific class of drugs are very realistic and offer a fine teaching tool for the case based academician. Every section not only teach! ! es the pharmacology involved but reviews all normal and abnormal physiology content involved. Sections cover pain medications, antibiotics, cardiopulmonary classes including antihypertensives, endocrinology and oncology. This reference text is far more extensive than is reflected in this brief review. I highly recommend this text as a stand alone text in the classroom and as a post-graduate reference for the clinician's bookshelf. A copy alongside of the PDR in the clinic would be a well used reference. ... Read more
