5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship
This is a concise book, perfect for MSIIIs starting their IM Clerkship; it is also great for Step 2 review and the Medicine Shelf. MSIIIs can use this as an IM starting point and fill in the details concerning their own patients using Harrison's, Up to Date, or Current Medical Diagnosis and Treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful but not by itself
First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book that gives you the key facts about many diseases. This is information that will help you answer questions during rounds and on exams. It's very well done, with nice illustrations. It's easy to get through, which is important since there's so much to learn during the Internal Medicine rotation (and not enough time!). I also recommend:

1) Practical Guide to the Care of the Medical Patient by Ferri because you need something to help you take care of patients. First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship isn't great for managing patients or working them up

2) Tarascon Pocket Pharmacopoeia because you need something for drug information (if you have epocrates, then you don't necessarily need this). First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship doesn't have much about drugs. Another plus is it's fairly cheap.

3) Internal Medicine Clerkship: 150 Biggest Mistakes because you need something that gives you the nuts and bolts of the rotation. This book tells you how to preround, give great oral case presentations, prepare complete write-ups, and impress during attending rounds. A lot of tips on how to get great evaluations. Not much of this is is in First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship.

4) Access to uptodate or some other medicine reference to help you work up patients.

5) Pretest book - you need to do questions before the shelf exam.

Bottom line is First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship is a great book but you need other things to help you do well during the rotation. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars First Aid for the Medicine clerkship
The best book I have used in medical so far. Questions I was pimped on during rounds, issues relevent to patient management, weird physical exam findings, strange syndromes (Felty's anyone?)were all covered in this book. I pretty much memorized the whole book, and all my attendings and residents during my medicine clerkship commented that my fund of knowledge was excellent. Everyone gave me honors, and it was literally all because of this book. Probably not adequate enough for the NBME shelf exam however, but combine it with some old kaplan step 2 questions and honoring that should be no sweat either. GET THIS BOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book. Maybe only book you need for this clerkship.
Great book. It's like a potent offering of what you need to know for your Medicine clerkship. It is highly distilled, has quick easy-to-read facts/pearls, and leaves out the crud. I lost mine but I am constantly wanting to go back and review it. I may just buy it again, even though I am done with my Medicine rotation and I am pursuing Surgery as a career. ... Read more

You know it as the masterwork in its field...and now, you can own the newest, most up-to-date version of this classic text: Adams and Victor's PRINCIPLES OF NEUROLOGY,7th Edition. This remarkable volume now incorporates the latest findings in the growing areas of neurology even as it retains its authority, comprehensive scope, and popular, easy-use format.

Approaches neurologic disease just as you would approach the patient!

Adams and Victor's PRINCIPLES OF NEUROLOGY, 7th Edition, begins with a detailed exposition of the symptoms and signs of disordered nervous function, just as you would begin with symptoms as presented by a patient. The text logically proceeds to syndromes and then to a description of all the main categories and types of disease that express themselves by each syndrome. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on the subject, for what it is
This is a very comprehensive book on the subject of neurology. Unfortunately, I was only interested in about 25% of the book's contents---those dealing with mental illness. Maybe I should have bought Neurology for Psychiatrists, but that book is smaller, so this one probably has almost as much psychiatric information anyway. Unlike many of the other reviewers, I actually LIKE the amount of detail in this book, although since I don't have an M.D. or a Ph.D. I could not understand all of it. I did also notice from the other reviews that there is a demand for a for user-friendly book dealing with Neurology, that parents can read to help understand their child's neurological deficits. Well, I have the solution! My book, The Failures of American Medicine (available at Amazon for [price]), contains five chapters on mental illness, and is both technical and relatively easy to read. I hope I have provided an answer for the parents who are struggling to find understandable information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Among the best....
This text is not easy to read, but it packs a lot of information. You can almost guarantee that this book will provide useful info on any neurological disease. It is one of the best reference books for general neurology. I also find its end-chapter references to be fairly complete. One criticism is that it does not offer too many tables or illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment on the review from Orleans
The sentiments expressed by the father are admirable, if somewhat inaccurate in areas. But I don't think parents should be asked to read *this* book - it's a specialist medical textbook! By all means, laypersons should read up on medical issues affectin their lives. But I think more efficient methods would be to read patient summaries etc - literature written speciffically so laypeople can *understand* what they are reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN ENDURING CLASSIC
This text, one of the finest works ever written on nervous pathology and the varied clinical manifestations they evoke, continues to occupy its eminent position in the field. A work by legends, it has become one on its own - no other textbook in existence elucidates neurological disease with such clarity and honesty.

Magnificent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many parents should read this
This is a standard medical textbook written for med students and residents; for laypeople it is not easy reading. However, millions of parents should read it, even if it's difficult.

The human brain is so complex that no two of us have identical capabilities or limitations; but we all have limitations. Most of us are fortunate to have limitations slight enough so that we learn just with the usual help of parents, friends, teachers and community to transcend or work around our limitations and lead full, productive lives as adults. However, a significant fraction of children have limitations severe enough to need extra help. There's where the trouble starts.

The problems usually get noticed in nursery school, kindergarten or first grade. Unfortunately, most such children's problems get pigeonholed into one of a small number of descriptive phrases, such as "hyperactive", "dyslexic", "autistic", "attention deficit disorder", "adacemically challenged", or some such. By and large, these descriptions are usually grossly correct descriptions of observed behavior, but they are frequently incomplete, and distressingly often they are wrong. For example, it is essentially impossible for a neurologist working with a psychiatrist to determine whether a child less than six years old is actually autistic, but four- and five-year olds are routinely labelled "autistic." And once these labels are applied, they tend to stick; this can lead to incomplete help, or help of the wrong kind.

These failures are not the fault of teachers, social workers, psychologists or physicians. They come about because accurate differential diagnosis of the hundreds of different neurological and biochemical problems that can cause behavioral problems is extraordinarily difficult, requiring more extended observation, and in many cases more psychological and neurological testing, than can be made available to all the children with problems. But if the problem is misdiagnosed or incompletely diagnosed, the help that's given to the child is unlikely to be as effective as if an accurate diagnosis were known.

Parents cannot replace professionals, but they can and should supplement professionals in these situations. Parents observe their children in a wider variety of circumstances, and for more of the time, than any professional can hope to do. By propiding accurate descriptions of the variations in a child's behavior depending on the circumstances in which the child is placed, parents can greatly assist neurologists and psychologists in making an accurate diagnosis.

But what's relevant? Every professional is used to being deluged with irrelevancies from his or her clients. To be able to provide information that's relevant and helpful, the parents need to have some idea of how the brain works, the ways in which brain function can be impaired, the extent to which children compensate for such impairments on their own, and what behaviors may indicate a problem that falls partly or completely outside the conventional pigeonholes. For parents whose young children are said to have intellectual or emotional problems of any sort, this book is *MUST* reading, even if it takes a year to read it. The basic knowledge of neurology given in this book is enough to let parents decide whether the behaviors they see are fully consistent with the label that's being pinned on the child, or whether further exploration, and perhaps different treatment or assistance, may be called for.

This still leaves the problem of where such parents can go for more advice and help; that I can't provide an answer to. But at least the parents in such cases can search for additional professional advice.

In short, if your young child has a problem in school, read this book, no matter how hard it is or how long it takes you! ... Read more

Book Description

This definitive reference work replaces Konigsmark and Gorlin's Genetic and Metabolic Deafness (1976). Whereas the earlier volume covered 151 genetic conditions related to hearing loss, this work covers 435. As before, the authors first discuss isolated hereditary hearing loss and then present hearing loss syndromes such as those involving the nervous system, eye, external ear and musculoskeletal system. The discussions are authoritative, practical and well-illustrated, and those of the most important syndromes are very detailed. Introductory chapters deal with the history of the field, clinical approach, embryology of the ear, tooth anomalies and hearing loss, and related endocrine and metabolic disorders. Throughout, the authors pay careful attention to nomenclature and classification. This will be an invaluable resource for all professionals concerned with genetic hearing loss, including medical geneticists, audiologists and otolaryngologists. ... Read more

Book Description

In the midst of a worldwide epidemic of autism, ADD, and ADHD, this book is a message of hope to parents embarking on the challenging journey of finding proper medical care for their Autism Spectrum Disorder children. Genetic susceptibility activated by "triggers" such as pesticides and heavy metals in vaccines can lead to immune system impairment, gut dysfunction, and pathogen invasion such as yeast and viruses in many children.

This is the first book written by an experienced clinician that gives a step-by-step treatment guide for parents and doctors based on the understanding that ASD is a complex biomedical illness resulting in significant brain malnutrition. Dr. McCandless, whose grandchild with autism has inspired her "broad spectrum approach," describes important diagnostic tools needed to select appropriate treatment programs. Her book explains major therapies newly available and identifies safe and effective options for parents and physicians working together to improve the health of these special children.

Now in a second edition, the book has new material and includes an index. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a biomedical "Bible"
Dr. McCandless has outdone herself with this one. There's so much "sugar coating" in the autism community, it's refreshing to be treated as a "professional parent" rather than a frail flower. She gives precise info that is being used by 1000's of parents of children with autism every day. This woman and this book has saved my son's outlook on life. She's given me the inspiration to be a better, more informed parent. There is no hand holding here, there is no "get you through it" chapter. There ARE hundreds of pages of vital information that every parent even CONSIDERING biomedical intervention can not be without. Another review complained of "coldness and lack of humanity"... couldn't be further from the truth. She's didn't write the book to be your emotional counselor, she wrote it to help YOUR child and HER grand daughter. There is not one ounce of blame or assumption on any page of this book. If the previous reviewer read that, she was reading from her own emotions, not the words in this book. Dr. McCandless never claims to make your child "un" autistic, she give YOU the info to make better judgement calls in your child's biomedical health. If you pick only one book, pick this one....you will not get any better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents and Practitioners: The help you are seeking is here.
Please do yourself, your child, or your patients the monumental favor of reading, living, and practicing this book. Children with Starving Brains is an easy to read and comprehensive guide to the painfully complex issues surounding the causation, gastrointestinal pathology, toxicity, and evaluation process of working with children with Austism Spectrum Disorders.

The book then deals extensively with the steps involved in healing the injuries. Dr. McCandless walks the reader through gastrointestinal healing measures, removing heavy metals, restoring proper immune function, and healing the STARVING brain.

You will shake your head in amazement both at the amount of helpful and hopeful information in this book, as well as in absolute awe at the lack of comprehension that most medical, dental, and nursing practitioners have concerning the contemporary state of causation, pathology, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

I work in a practice that has successfully treated almost 100 children utilizing the principles outlined by Dr. McCandless. All the children have improved to varying degrees. Some have almost totally "recovered", others have shown islands of significant improvement, but ALL have responded positively.

This is good, progressive, modern health care. It is not "alternative" treatment. It is correct treatment to address an acute illness or "insult" to a child's entire brain, body, and self. These interventions have also proven tremendously helpful in our treatment of 200 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

I especially appeal to my nursing colleagues: READ THIS BOOK. In so many situations, We are the professionals advising mothers about conception and prenatal care; administering immunizations; counseling parents about the use of antibiotics; teaching about dental care; providing care in pediatrician's offices, or in our own pediatric, psychiatric, and general health care practices. If we do not avail ourselves of this information, we are part of the problem, and NOT part of the answer. If we are ignorant of the issues surrounding vulnerbility and causation, we are directly contributing to the epidemic of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

In the future, we will look back on the pioneering work of Jaquelyn McCandless, and her colleagues such as Teresa Binstock, and the innovative professionals associated with DAN! and similar organizations, and know that this was indeed a turning point in the history of medicine and nursing.

We have purchased several dozen copies of this book and have distributed it to parents and professionals, and they have been amazed. Parents intuitively know there is much truth to be found in this book. Professionals who read it with an open mind often come around and start to pay attention to data rather than dogma.

Invest a few hours reading this book. It will change the life of someone you love, or someone with whose care and development you are entrusted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with ANSWERS AND WHERE TO START!!
Finally, no doom and gloom. Families with ASD kids - a manual on HOW TO. FINALLY! If you want BIOMEDICAL answers and a clear direction on why and how - this book is for you.

Be sure to provide behavioral and biomedical intervention for your child on the spectrum. Both together make all the difference in the world.

(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference for Biomedical Interventions
Children with Starving Brains describes what is wrong with ASD children and what you can do to improve the child's condition even if your child's physician knows very little about autism. It is written in clear and understandable "layman's" terms, making it my most used resource. I highly recommend it to parents and to the child's physician.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful guidebook for parents and physicians
Thank you Dr. McCandless for this incredible book that guides both parents and physicians in treatment that can make such a difference with our children. The information in this book is priceless for those whose lives have been changed by an autism diagnosis. The explanations and treatment are wonderful for both the lay person and the clinician. My son is recovering so very fast from Autism and it is due to the interventions that are outlined in this book. Dr. McCandless has dedicated her life and practice as a physician to working with autistic children and her commitment and dedication are helping thousands to improve and recover. Thank you Dr. McCandless for this incredible guidebook and for your dedication to helping these children. This book gives both the parent and the physician a clear road map to follow and explains in detail the many complicated "pieces of the puzzle". It is a must read for any family affected by this disease and recommended by many physicians nationwide who work with Autistic children using biomedical interventions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent illustrated guide to muscles.
Strength Training Anatomy is an excellent guide to your body's muscles. The book is in full color and is divided into the following sections: arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs, buttocks, and abs. Within each section there are at least 15 exercise demonstrations targeting the various muscle groups. What makes this book good? Apart from doing chest exercises, for example, this book educates the user on different types of exercises along with proper technique and its impact on the muscle. So the end result is that you are able to design your routine to give you not only mass, but importantly the "cut" look. I recommend this book along with The Workout Log, which Amazon also carries, to keep track of your progress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Execllent Anatomical Reference for Weight Training
This book is an excellent weight training reference for insight into the anatomy of the major muscle groups, and the exercises best suited to train specific muscles.

The book is broken down into seven major muscle groups: arms, shoulders, chest, back, legs, buttocks, and abdomen. Within each muscle group are multiple exercises, each comprised of detailed anotomical illustrations, instructions on performing the exercises, and key information such as variations (for specific focus on particular muscles) and warnings (to aviod injury).

Using this book, one could easily select a variety of exercises to build a total body workout program. The selection of exercises also allows for some routine variation to keep one's workout from getting stale.

The illustrations are of an exellent quality, as are the materials. The pages are of heavyweight paper, with a semi-glossy finish.

Although I rated this title highly, I did so with the understanding that it suits a very specific purpose, and is not a general purpose introduction or guide to weight training. This is an ANATOMY REFERENCE, specific to selected weight training exercises. It does not contain any other information concerning weight training, diet, exercise, etc. In fact, there is not even a brief introduction by the author, simply the reference material itself. But, in terms of its intended purpose, it is an excellent reference. If you already have some sort of "Bodybuilding Encyclopedia", you probably already posess much of the information contained in this title. Having no interest in the history, self-promotion, and general testosterone driven attitudes of many of those types of titles (as well as the phonebook sized package), I much prefer this concise book as an exercise reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need this reference
This is a great book. It's not an overall workout guide; rather, it gives detailed information on a wide variety of weight exercises, with beautiful anatomical illustrations that show exactly what parts of what muscles are involved in each one. If you're lifting weights and you want to really know what you're doing, this is an absolutely essential reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great regional anatomy, poor on training strategy
The artwork in this book is very impressive. It attests to the incredible patience and dedication of its author. The book shows almost all working muscles and helps you (if you are familiar with muscle anatomy) to figure ways to discern your points of weakness and strength. Thus, it is most beneficial to people who studied anatomy yet need a reminder to evaluate their exercise selection.

I saw the book in the gym once, which surprised me because it is not a training book. It does not tell you how to choose a sequence of exercises on a particular day or for a particular goal. You would not need to carry the book to the gym to remember the steps of execution of an exercise. The best usage for the book is enhancing you guessing of hitting a particular muscle with a specific exercise.

The exercise list in this book in not inclusive or perfect and only depicts what the author perceives as common. For example, the book does not tell you whether to choose machines or freestyle exercises, nor does it tell you how to perform a compound exercise that eliminates many unnecessary separate and partial exercises.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enough to make anyone a humanist.
I've had this book for a while now, and time after time, even when I'm not looking for workout information, I just like to look at the amazingly drawn pictures that Mr. Delavier's book is filled with, simply because, I think it's a marvel. I can't begin to say how it has helped me concentrate on muscles during workouts, and retain perfect (or near perfect) form. That's quite important, and this book does deliver that.

I've had friends come over only to pick this book up and sit there, gazing like cows at an oncoming train. It's that good. I believe it's a must for someone who is strongly into weight training/ bodybuilding, or any of the names you prefer to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text
Charles Ciccone who wrote this text was my teacher in physical therapy school at Ithaca College. Throughout college, everyone knew that if the class was taught by him we would all have an easy time understanding all of the concepts. He was a great teacher who really knew how to explain even the more difficult topics and pharmacology was no exception. This textbook was extrememly useful as it not only explains what types of drugs have specific effects on the body and it's systems, but it is particularly detailed in describing the impact that the drugs may have on rehab. Even in class, this was one aspect that he reinforced. He explained that the reason for talking about certain classes of drugs and then giving a few examples is because the drug world is always changing and so are the names. This way he has provided a wealth of knowledge and in a very easy to understand manner.

I have been out of school for about 3 years and I still occassionally refer to this book when encountering some classes of drugs and this is a great reference to have. I would highly recommend this text to anyone, that is especially if you can't be in one of his classes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive pharmacology text for all rehab professionals.
Pharmacology in Rehabilitation by C.D. Ciccone is an all inclusive text and post-graduate reference on drugs, pharmakokinetics, action/side effects/interactions. Of paramount interest and use is the section within each class of drugs entitled "special considerations in rehabilitation."

Section I is a self contained unit in pharmacokinetics with enough detail for any non-prescribing rehab professional. I am sure prescribing clinicians would also find these explanations clear and helpful in deciphering the more involved pharmacology texts.

Section II: CNS, deals with not only the pharmacology but offers an excellent review of the CNS organization and neurotransmitters. I very much enjoyed the section explaining the blood-brain barrier which is clear and removes all mystery. The clinical case studies offered for each specific class of drugs are very realistic and offer a fine teaching tool for the case based academician.

Every section not only teach! ! es the pharmacology involved but reviews all normal and abnormal physiology content involved. Sections cover pain medications, antibiotics, cardiopulmonary classes including antihypertensives, endocrinology and oncology.

This reference text is far more extensive than is reflected in this brief review.

I highly recommend this text as a stand alone text in the classroom and as a post-graduate reference for the clinician's bookshelf. A copy alongside of the PDR in the clinic would be a well used reference. ... Read more
