5-0 out of 5 stars Another great tool for the practioner's tool box.
Research suggests that an ever increasing number of practioners are relying on tools such as this to help formulate treatment plans.

As a graduate student, what I find useful about this book is that after you study a particular disorder---from the DSM-IV-TR itself, a good psychopathology text (see Davison & Neal's Abnormal Psychology), and the DSM's Diagnostic Criteria handbook, The Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner completes the loop.

I bought this book after taking a case studies class where the instructor did an absolutely miserable job in showing us the rhyme and reason behind a good treatment plan. Not satisfied that I knew enough about this critically important piece in the counseling process, I did some research and found this book to be the most highly regarded in this genre.

As subsequent classes deal with child and adolescent psychopathology, family psychopathology, etc. etc. I will be getting the treatment plans that correspond with these issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You.
Just what I needed, such a time saver now I can actually use my brain power to help not just write about it--Thanks again.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best book
If you are in the Human Service field. This book is a must. It has helped me so much. I've had this book for over 7 years and if you are learning to write service plans, you will need to get this book and the others as well. Believe me, get this book. It is worth the price and beneficial as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very focused, great for instruction, keeps things moving.
Excellent for learning how to write treatment plans, as well as for generating more alternatives for interventions. Working with the client to select the most important goals and most compelling interventions helps the client to take a more active approach to the tasks, and increases hope. The intro section teaches how to write a treatment plan, very good for grad students. I don't bill insurance, so instead of DSM-IV diagnosis as the sixth element, I write evaluation benchmarks. Another reviewer feared a cookbooky approach that reduces the human element in counseling/therapy. I disagree; developing and writing a treatment plan with a client helps to clarify what he/she really wants, instructs the client on the therapeutic process, and keeps in mind the desired outcomes. It keeps things moving forward. The transparency of the process keeps the counselor/therapist from being a mysterious expert figure, and empowers the client; some counselors/therapists may not like that, though. Those of us who work in time-limited settings can't afford months of wandering through a mysterious fog. Planning and goal-setting in therapy is part of the human process, not separate from it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Quick Reference for Busy Clinicians
Psychotherapists often complain about the high cost of doing business with managed care companies--but the real plea behind the complaint is that we want to spend more time with clients and less time with paperwork. This book creates a framework for doing just that. The experienced, competent clinician who finds him- or herself strangely inarticulate when faced with a blank OTR will find a helpful link between theory, technique, and individual needs that will help in carifying goals, determining specific interventions, and measuring success. When I use it with clients, I find the therapeutic alliance is strengthened, problems and obstacles are clarified, and underlying issues often surface in unexpected ways. A great find for busy clinicians. ... Read more

My Current Pediatric Dx and Tx gets used every day in class. If you are required another book for classes, add this book as a supplament.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERIOR METHODOLOGY; VERY COMPREHENSIVE
Designed by experts, and with care; "Current Pediatric Diagnosis & Treatment" is one book that both paediatricians and GPs know too well. It covered every aspect of child's health-care in a way that would arouse envy in other texts. Its superior methodology is one factor that has kept its name above others. The authors of this book deserve tons of commendations. They did a fantastic job. Every chapter of the book speaks for them!
Its illustrations are utterly comprehensive; and the frequency with which its information is updated ensure that only the most current advances in paediatrics are included.
Very welcomed! Books of this quality would ensure that doctors (and medics) will always live upto their respective billings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Children won't seem a problem with this book
Everyone recommended big fat books of pediatrics, with lots of words and little answers. But this book is all you want and need to know about in your pediatrics rotations. With diagnostic essentials, getting through diseases just gets a lot easier, and with therapeutical answers, it just builds good doctors. I specially liked the chapter on antimicrobials and vaccines, so essential in pediatric care. Definitely a must have for a good medical student with lot to learn and too little time (at the end, that's what medicine is all about). All my medschool classmates just wanted to have my book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surgeon's best friend
If you only have time to read one book, this is the one. Every topic is boiled down to only the pure gold. All the useless facts that you can't remember anyway are left out. Presented in an easy to understand, easy to remember format. This is really all you need. I plan on reading every new issue when available. By the way, I've read Schwartz, Norton, Sabiston, and ACS over the past few years. All are good, but I already work long enough hours for my free time to be spent reading such lengthy texts.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, But:
This is an easy to read surgery text with up to date techniques and tests; however, there are numerous errors in the text. For the most part they are simple ones, easily reasoned out (i.e. gastric pH decreased with PPIs); but, for a seventh edition this kind of sloppiness calls into question the integrity of rest of the text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
Excellent text overall and in details. Very helpful in everyday practice and in Board preparation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for boards
This is the book which any surgeon studying for the general surgery oral boards MUST read. It covers a broad range of practical information.

FYI -- When I took my boards, everyone told me to read Schwartz for the written and Cameron for the orals; I did that and passed (I think) easily. Although I think some of the new textbooks such as Dr. Greenfield's give Schwartz a run for the money, no other book challenges Cameron for studying for the oral boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars an excellent book!
If the first edition was brilhant this 2nd edition is a must in the field of diagnostic ultrasound. There is an answer of vitually any subject, all with a table with a brief resume. Fotographs are very clear and cover almost every topic. The editors may be proud of its creation, a definitive book in this ever changing and growing medical speciality.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE diagnostic ultrasound texbook
The second edition updates an already definitive textbook of diagnostic ultrasound. The contributors are all luminaries in the field, many having authored their own texts. Dr. Rumack has been able to edit the book into a comprehensive yet readable text. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
Best book on the subject, goes hand-in-hand with Guyton's book. Common pathologies of each system or organ is described sometimes with nice colored pictures. Explanations are very simple and easy to understand. Each system is first explained in terms of structure and physiology and than followings chapters in that section takes on pathologies of the system or its components, number of chapters depending on the system complexity. It is a perfect book for pathology or parallel book with physiology to understand physiology with its applications.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's not so bad if you know what you're getting into.
I'm glad that you've come. It shows that you believe in looking ahead and being prepared. A little bit of that action would have saved General Custer and his men a whole lotta' headache. With a bit of luck, reading this review will do the same for you. Hopefully (because you'll be ready for what's coming), by the time you finish this book you won't want to put a bullet through your head and forcibly remove your own scalp (in that order). My initial reaction to the book wasn't as bad as it might be for others (I have a high tolerance for pain and boredom), however I would like to do my best to prevent any Dubliners-induced tragedies. I will admit, when I first read this book I did not enjoy it at all. I don't know about you folks, but I enjoy a book where at least some of the characters have at least one redeeming quality. You're hard up to find so sweet a gem in this anthology. From open to close the reader is bombarded with every class of loser imaginable. If it's not some gutless nobody without the heart to even attempt to go after his dreams, it's a drunk who beats his children. Of course there was that one part where Ransom got into a fistfight with Satan-oh, wait. That was from a book I enjoyed (C.S. Lewis's Perelandra-check it out). Let's not get confused about this. Saying that I did not enjoy the book does not imply that I do not like it. Often in life, things look entirely different in retrospect. Dubliners is one of those things. James Joyce wrote this book at about the time he expatriated. There have to be some pretty powerful feelings behind a decision to leave one's own country. In this book you get a glimpse of what he saw, the things that he dealt with everyday. You see the world that he put up with, and you see it through his eyes. In that regard, this is one of the most powerful pieces produced in recent times. Nevertheless, I write book reviews with people like my dad in mind. If it gets too real or hits too close to home, he won't take it. You can visualize it like this: Quigley Down Under = Good; Dingoes Ate My Baby = Bad. If he doesn't get a huge kick out of it, he will have nothing to do with it. So, if you're looking for huge explosions, karate chops, or campfire flatulence, this is not the book for you. On the other hand, if you like 'em slow, powerful, subtle, and poignant (and moderately depressing-cough, Tess of the D'Urbervilles, cough) Dubliners is your sack of oats, Mr. Ed. I find myself caught in the middle of the two types: which means that if it can blow up and move me at the same time, I'm sold-kinda' like a Tchaikovsky finale. The book is classic-quality literature; I won't deny that. I'm just saying that it's not for everyone. It's definitely not my dad's cup of tea (technically, nothing is his 'cup of tea.' He won't touch the stuff. He says it makes him gassy-but I digress).

5-0 out of 5 stars disease at it's best
As a graduating student in Homoeopathic medicine this is without a doubt the best general book I have read so far in this field. It uses a great variation of diagrams, charts, pictures and text, thus allowing for differing styles of absorption. It's subjct headings are broken into logical chapters and the recent addition of chapters for infant and elderly pathology is a fine improvement. The text is friendly and well written but remains professional. It also come with an A drive disk carrying a basic exam based round the books content. This is the first book I would recommend to students starting in this field.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book for FPGEE
I found this book very helpful for my Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination. It has covered a lot of important topics in one book. I recommend this book for licensure examination.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
This book is a Godsend! I was given the opportunity to write the Evaluation Exam for the PEBC in Canada and I had no idea where I was going to get all the information I needed to study. This book is really a 'Comprehensive Review' of what was done at University (and sometimes, what was NOT done too!). There are a few errors in the text which you should keep in mind (don't accept everything as truth without questioning statements occasionally. If you are wide awake, you will spot them. All in all, a brilliant book. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars keep looking
As a neuroscience graduate student, I was extremely excited to read this book and to keep it as a reference but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations for either task. Given Kandel's outstanding contributions to our understanding of learning, I hoped his book would have similar standards. Most notable of several flaws is that the individual chapters, each being individually authored, were poorly edited and did not provide an integrated picture of the field. Further, some graphs were mislabeled, and in several chapters, this text engaged in the annoying practice of introducing and using new terminology early on and then defining this jargon at the end of the chapter. The material on vision was thorough but audition and the vestibulochlear systems were very skimpy. If you are interested in learning anything about motor systems, I'd recommend you pass this book up for Michael Zigmond's Fundamentals of Neuroscience.

5-0 out of 5 stars advanced neurosciences
This is a tremendous book. I've been using it for teaching since the 2nd edition. I don't know where or how Dr. Kandel (a brand-new Nobel winner) and his co-authors find the time to update this along with all the other writing and research they do, but it's great that they do. The illustrations have caught up to the computer age and are even better than before. The price is astonishing for a medical or graduate school textbook - really a great value.

3-0 out of 5 stars A useful reference, but not a good text
This massive book has lots of useful information and informative figures, and the decent index makes it highly likely that you will find what you need. However, using it as a textbook for a course is a ridiculous thing to do, especially if it's an undergraduate course. The amount of material is simply overwhelming, and it would discourage students from pursuing a career in neural science. If you are a neurobiology teacher and am considering using this text in your course, please reconsider. In my opinion (as a neurobiology teacher), a concise and readable text is far more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars Introduction to Neurosciences
I used this in medical school, then graduate school, finding the length and quality improve with succeeding editions of the volume. Very well known chapter editors create a 'Scientific American-like' view of the Basic Neurosciences. This book is grossly inadequate if you want to pass medical and graduate school exams. It's like a "candy-coated" atlas of neuroscience. There are not many rigorous equations to learn in the book. For that you will need From Neuron to Brain or even a higher book such as Theoretical Neuroscience. The strength of this book is the beautiful color illustrations. Its weakness is that it does not cover "hard-core" electrophysiology. Ohm's Law and the cable theory of the squid giant axon are covered, but where is Heisenberg-James' Theory of the quantum vesicle, and Boolean algebra. No mention. Also, where is Bayes Theorem and a discussion of probabilistic Populations of Neurons. Entropy is not discussed. Ballistic, and Biofeedback are not discussed. Magnetic Stimulation and fMRI are alluded to but not incorporated as valid tools in the study of the Nervous System. I have not really used this book since graduate school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource!
Kandel's monumental 4th Edition text is chock-full of updated figures, pictures, and descritive mechanisms within its 9 parts.

This textbook would function extremely well as the primary resource for an intermediate-level Neuroscience course (graduate school).

It is well-organized and adequately referenced. The histological figures, MRI scans, and related clinical measures are especially impressive and helpful for supporting the information presented in the text.

This textbook does a fine job with balancing basic information with highly technical concepts. However, and understandably so, due to the voluminous, ever-expanding and ever-evolving nature of neural science, the text does not contain much regarding synaptic plasticity nor circadian rhythms.

That said, I still think this textbook is one of the most valuable tools that you could include in your academic armamentarium. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Book!
"Information Technology Control and Audit" is an outstanding book! It provides a step by step of IS auditing process and tremendous amount of up to date information on IT control as well as audit related issues. This book provides information starting from the importance of control and auditability, audit role in Computer Information System, the use of Computer-Assisted Audit Tools and Techniques in audit, and the complexities of CIS operations and control issues. The appendixes of this book are also valuable. We can find audit cases that are related to real life situation, professional standards applying to IT, and samples of audit program on them. This book is really worth to read. If you can only keep one book with you, this book is the one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you want to explore IT auditing?
The book "Information Technology Control and Audit" is a good reference not only for the beginners, but also for professionals in Information Systems auditing field. All aspects concerning Information Systems auditing are completely covered in the book, including the most current issues in the Information Systems auditing field such as security and privacy of Information Systems. Other aspects of Information Systems auditing are well laid out, starting from the importance of control and auditability, the development process, application risks and controls, the complexities of CIS operations, and other emerging issues on Information Systems auditing. On the appendix, there are cases to challenge our mind to think about real life situation. Standards and guidelines to professionally establish Information Technology is included as part of the appendix too. Therefore, I strongly recommend this book for those individuals who look for current issues and guidelines on Information Systems auditing field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book For Audit and Control
I will take CISA on coming Saturday, in fact, this is my reference material, I found that those materials are very comprehensive and it quotes some practical cases and examples to illustrate the concept. Meanwhile, I found that some sample CISA questions are obtained from there, that's reason I persist to complete it.

In addition, the most important point is that it provides some useful appendix like Sample Audit Program and Audit Cases Excercises, it is readily helpful.

It do helps me to enrich myself in MIS techniques and review what I have experienced in the past once I have adopted an audit and control mindset.

The 2nd edition is released and you could refer it as below:

For those who know nothing about auditing, this book provides a clear understanding of what auditing is. This book has great references to organizations affiliated with the field. The examples in the book are useful for understanding how to write an auditing program, with step - by - step methods on how to start an audit. Overall, two thumbs up for those who want to know what auditing is all about. Highly recommended.

Do you know a child who plays too rough, is uncoordinated, hates being touched, is ultra-sensitive (or unusually insensitive) to noise or sensations of heat and cold? Many pediatricians and other experts are beginning to recognize a link between some of these apparently unrelated behavior patterns.Children with perfectly normal "far senses" (such as sight and hearing) may have, because of a poorly integrated nervous system, serious problems with their "near senses," including touch, balance, and internal muscle sensation. It's called Sensory Integration Dysfunction, or SI. The announcement of yet another new syndrome is bound to raise skeptical eyebrows--and with good reason. (How do we know which child really has SI, and which one just happens to share some of the same symptoms?) Author Carol Stock Kranowitz argues convincingly, however, that for some children SI is a real disorder, and that it is devastating partly because it so often looks like nothing so much as "being difficult." And, whatever the scientific status of SI, Kranowitz carefully details many routines and remedies that will help children--and the parents of children--who exhibit the behaviors described. This book is a must-read for all doctors, pediatricians, and (perhaps especially) childcare workers.--Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars finally, an explanation!
When my son, at age 2, was evaluated by professionals in our city's Early Intervention program, and diagnosed as having sensory issues along with some developmental delays (fine motor and speech) and apraxia, I had no idea what they were talking about. Our OT suggested I read The Out-of-Sync-Child and click, I got it. Suddenly all these "quirky" behaviors of my son's made sense: The intense craving for movement like swinging or jumping (while other kids in the swings smiled, he was hysterically whooping, and when other kids needed quiet time before bed, he needed to jump to exhaustion). The vigorous head shaking. The penchant for lying on the floor or the sidewalk, particularly in the middle of a tantrum. He pushed puzzle pieces so hard they'd pop out of place, smack a drum or xylophone so hard that he'd almost break the beater. His focus was terrible--and yet, if we "overstimulated" him by playing airplane or crushing him with pillows, suddenly his focus would be terrific. After reading this book, I understood that he has problems processing proprioceptive and vestibular sensations--these are senses I didn't even know we have. Now that my husband and I understand the importance of giving him the stimulation he needs, we can see a huge improvement. The behaviors have lessened and his focus is a thousand times better. I can't recommend this enough to anyone who suspects their child has sensory issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for anyone who has children in their lives!
What was once seen as unexplainable outbursts, violent temper tantrums, instances of complete withdrawal and other "bad behavior" are finally explained from the viewpoint of a child with SI. Parents and teachers alike will discover that these children are simply interacting and reacting to a world that assaults him/her with overwhelming sensations.

Where punishment has been ineffective, this book steps in to fill the gap. It teaches parents and other caregivers not only what Sensory Integration Disorder is and how it affects a child but what possible triggers may exist and how to address them.

Perhaps the greatest contribution of this book is not to teach adults how to counter sensory overload but to help adults teach the child to cope with this common disorder that will be with him/her throughout his/her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars From an Educator's Viewpoint
The Out-of-Sync Child was a text book for one of my early childhood education courses. This is a wonderful tool for both educators and parents. I feel this book gives hope to parents and techniques for teachers to help make all children feel comfortable in the classroom. Working with preschool children, I feel it is my duty to make sure every child's learning style is taken into consideration. I feel it is imparative for parent, teacher, and occupational therapist to work as a team.

My first experience with a child with SI dysfunction was last school year. His Mother was open and receptive and that was a huge factor in this child's progress. I was amazed at his development due to Mom keeping him with an OT over the summer. He went from almost no language to making eye contact and having complete conversations. I have been so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with this child and every time I see him, I tell him just how proud I am of him!

I highly recommend the companion book The Out-of-Sync Child Had Fun. This book is filled with wonderful activities for SI children as well as all children. I am looking forward to including them into our curriculum next year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Light in the darkness
A child with sensory integration disorder spends most of his life uncomfortable in his own skin. The Out-of-Sync Child is an excellent resource for parents whose children suffer from this crippling neurological condition, and demonstrates the devastation that can come from having "the volume control" on one or more of the senses (including the sense that allows the average blindfolded person to eat with a fork without impaling his own cheek) set too high or too low. My own 29-month-old has been seen by child psychiatrists, speech therapists, audiologists and occupational therapists. The growing consensus is that he suffers from this debilitating -- but manageable -- condition. The Out-of-Sync Child has helped us not only understand our son better, but also to understand the evaluation process better. Why does the evaluator care that my son wakes up frequently in the night? What does it mean that he loves bear hugs but lashes out at a gentle touch? I have only one quarrel with this book, and perhaps I am asking too much of the authors: The hardest thing about having a child with sensory integration disorder -- and there are many hard things about having a child with sensory integration disorder -- is that you can't explain the disorder to onlookers in a five-sentence paragraph. Because of that, it is easy to decide that the disorder does not exist."Dag-blammit," people say, "in my day you made children sit still in school and if a child didn't sit still, it was because the parents were poor disciplinarians, and if he can't wear a polyester shirt, it's because he's spoiled." Why is my 2.5-year-old wearing a leash? Why is he such a handful that we cannot entrust him to anyone but us, his parents? Why would he die of dehydration before he would drink anything but milk out of anything but a bottle? We cannot explain sensory integration disorder in a sound-bite, but at least, thanks to this book, we have understanding of our son's multifaceted, complicated disorder, and we are delighted to find in the book some immediate solutions for helping him -- and us -- cope. The treatment of choice for S.I. Disorder is occupational therapy, and many treatments must be carried on at home. We have applied many of the suggestions in the book and have seen improvement in our child over a matter of days. And for parents just beginning the odyssey with their child, this book can help understand the evaluation process even if their child turns out to be suffering from some other disorder. A must-read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good start
This book brought a lot of answers to a set of parents who were confused on what exactly Sensory Integration Dysfunction was. The only thing I would have added was more advice on how to cope as parents. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth the money
I found this book to be very helpful in my studying for step 2. I felt like the book did a good job of breaking down the presentation, differential dx, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. As always with the first aid series, the mnemonics are helpful. I really liked the rapid review section that allowed one to quickly review all key concepts from each section. The emergency medicine section was also extremely helpful. One drawback would be the lack of a surgery section as surgery is one of the subjects tested on the boards. Overall, I think this is definitely worth the money. Another book I found to be helpful was Boards and Wards.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than the previous
First Aid for the USMLE Step 2, on its new edition brings readers preparing for the Step 2 of the American Boards a better book than previous issues. Content has been revised and expanded, and, although worse than the Step 1 equivalent, it is still the best book available to prepare for Step 2. It is excelent for last minute review, and also contains a very helpful analysis of other available board review books. Major problem is the abusive use of abbreviations that are not explained in the appendix.

5-0 out of 5 stars Check out the 4th Edition
According to some friends who graduated over the past couple years, the previous editions of First Aid for the USMLE Step 2 were not worth the money; so I almost bypassed this new edition while browsing in the bookstore, but I'm glad I glanced through it and then decided to buy it. I used this book in conjunction with the Underground Clinical Vignettes by the same authors (kind of pricey at about $200 for the set, but surprisingly worth it; the cases are--usually--keyed to the main text). After spending a total of approximately 120 hours with these books (about four hours a night for the month prior to the exam), I raised my score from 194/79 on Step I to 228/92 on Step II. To me, that was well worth the +/- $250 it cost to purchase the package.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved me on Step 2
Quite simply the most high yield text for Step 2. It's all there, and it's in a manner that's not terribly painful to get through multiple times. I used this and one question book for Step 2 with great results.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better.
This book comprises the pretty comprehensive chapters of Dermatology, Neurology and Statistics. Obg is okay there. Surgery amd IM are weak. However, It is still worth to be considered. ... Read more

Book Description

DSM-IV presents a challenging task for all clinicians. Just reviewing the diagnostic standards is time consuming and often confusing even for the most experienced practitioner; and what is more, learning the standards alone does not immediately translate into clinical application.

This book helps professionals quickly learn how to apply the diagnostic criteria to patients. Every DSM-IV diagnosis is simplified and clearly interpreted, emphasizing what the clinician needs to know most when making a diagnosis. Case vignettes, extensive evaluations, and the author's informed commentary combine to enable mental health practitioners to readily incorporate DSM-IV into practice.

Taking the reader step-by-step through the diagnostic process for every DSM-IV category, the author clearly explains how to derive a complete, five-axis diagnosis. Each set of criteria is discussed in detail, illustrated by a vivid clinical vignette and interpreted in lucid terms. With this logical organization, the book provides a full course in diagnostic thinking, presented by a master clinician who has evaluated and treated over 15,000 patients.

Among the many helpful features:

*QUICK GUIDES in each chapter concisely outline every diagnosis, cross-referencing disorders that can result in similar symptoms. This feature alone provides a complete catalog of which symptoms define a disorder, and how these relate to other disorders.

*TIPS throughout the text highlight crucial diagnostic information.

*CLINICAL VIGNETTES richly illustrate the work and serve as the principal teaching device. Over 100 detailed case histories provide a framework for understanding the diagnostic criteria, giving the reader a genuine sense of each disorder.

*EVALUATION of the patient is clearly described in each vignette. The author identifies the most likely of the differential diagnoses, shows how the patient fits the criteria, and explains why other diagnoses are unlikely.

* CODING NOTES follow many criteria lists, supplying additional information about coding, subtypes, and specifiers when relevant.

An indispensableresource for clinical practice, this book is also ideal for mental health professionals preparing for licensing exams. It serves as a valuable introductory text for students needing to develop a framework for diagnostic understanding.

4-0 out of 5 stars A practical explanation of the DSM-IV
This book provides a practical explanation of the "DSM-IV" that will appeal to anyone who wants a thorough, simplified description of this complex book. I'm only giving it four stars because I don't think it provides an explanation of the latest changes made in the "DSM-IV-TR". The book will nonetheless appeal to nearly anyone seeking to improve their grasp of psychiatry, not just psychiatrists in training. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

4-0 out of 5 stars The DSM-IV Made Easy
I do not know how I would have gotten through my first experience having to use the DSM as a diagnostic tool for my graduate work in psychopathology without this book. I used it to work up all my case presentations, and they were always accurate. Thank you, James Morrison!

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes the DSM-IV a bit more palatable (no small feat)
This book summarizes the major taxonomies of the DSM-IV, and includes scenarios illustrating most of the major categories and sub-pathologies. Unlike the standard texts which seems to have been developed by a group of obsessive compulsive personalities or, as a character in a recent play claims, "a coven," this one has some humanity to it, and it's even funny at times. If you're a student it may also reduce physical disorders such as aching backs, and dislocated shoulders which the original may cause if you have to lug it around your university. Did the original text creators ever consider this? It also has a nicer cover. It also may save you money since the DSM-V is no doubt lurking on the horizon, not having been revised for 8 years or so.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable resource!
This is a great resource for anyone who is interested in more illustrative examples of the various diagnoses than is provided by the DSM-IV. Morrison's use of interesting vignettes will keep your attention, and make differential diagnosis a lot more fun! After reading this book, any diagnostician will be much more informed as to how to recognize the various disorders and the nuances between the differentials.

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable tool in tackling the complexity of DSM IV.
Morrison does an excellent job of breaking down the complex difficulties of diagnosis into a manageable, thorough and above all readable guide. Where DSM - IV is daunting and impersonal, DSM-IV Made Easy guides the reader with an evident understanding of the difficulties faced not only by the uninitiated but also the experienced. Well written vignettes help bring DSM's disorders to life and step by step diagnoses are invaluable tools in learning to apply DSM's vast criteria. This book is organized, detailed, accessible and all but essential in wading through the tricky waters of DSM IV. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous reviews are outdated!
The previous 3 reviews were written before the release of this new edition. Still the best single book to read for the oral Boards. All clinicians should own a copy and refer to it often.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why this used to be a good book.
As an attending/assistant professor of anesthesiology I frequently recommend books for residents to read. I still recommend this book, but with the caveat that much of the information is outdated and some of it is no longer even held to be fact. The underlying theme of the book - that comorbid states influence anesthesia and vice versa - is still true. I tell residents to get a used copy or wait until a new edition comes out.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book needs a new edition
Eight years is a long time in the field of anesthesiology. This book would be an invaluable resource IF it wasn't so outdated, but as it is, it talks about too many drugs that are no longer used, and has nothing about many drugs that are commonly used today. IMHO, a current edition of a major anesthesiology text (most of the big name texts have a new edition in the last 1-2 years) is a more useful reference. FWIW, this review is from the perspective of a first-year anesthesiology resident. YMMV.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great account of close calls and tense trials with viruses
I think that Richard Preston deserves all five stars for this thrilling book on real life experiences with deadly Ebola Viruses. He took an accumulation of true stories and turned it into an interesting and spellbinding book that hardly seems true. This book is easy to follow, even though the whole is scientific. Preston balanced the scientific language and factuality with an interesting plot and rounded characters as in a fictional book. Preston went into painstaking details to turn the Reston operation and other experiments into lament terms that all readers might comprehend. His magnificent writing style also came through in his account of nurse Mayinga's journey through the city and how catastrophic the event actually might have been. I really enjoyed the amount of effort Preston put forth in describing what Ebola and Marburg actually do to the body, prior to and during death. Although the book was very good, I do think that Richard Preston might have left out the entire fourth part. It had no real influence on the situation at Kitum Cave or what the reader thought of Africa. With all things considered, I strongly advise this book be read by everyone and I will certainly recommend this book to everybody I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entering the "Hot Zone"
It starts with a simple headache. Then maybe you get a nosebleed. After a few days, you know you are extremely sick. The lining of your stomach and the top layer of your tongue literally fall off. Your organs turn into mush. Excessive bleeding from every natural opening in your body occurs. And since your blood can't clot, the bleeding won't stop. Black vomit mixed with blood gushes from your mouth. Then, you die painfully with a mask-like expression on your face.

This doesn't even sound like it could exist, does it? Well it does. It is death by a virus known as Ebola. It is especially contagious in monkeys and can jump species over to humans.

The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, describes outbreaks of this and other "hot" viruses in locations around the world, including a city near Washington, D.C. Virus experts in the Army need to unravel the Ebola mystery and try to protect the public from this vicious disease.

Preston has taken a true story and unveiled its horror. I couldn't believe how descriptive his writing is. If you want to read a true modern day thriller, then this is an awesome pick. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to reading more from Richard Preston.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
After months of stuffy old British classics we read THE HOT ZONE by Richard Preston in my sophomore English class. What a breath of fresh air! The book reads like a novel, but is full of fascinating information about ebola. Whether you're a biology buff or just want a good beach read, this is a great book. I highly recommend this(...)

4-0 out of 5 stars Good
This book happened to be my Physics book to read and i thought it would just be some people trying to track down this deadly virus. I thought it would all be fiction and i'd wright a report and get a good grade. Turns out, this book is fiction, one of the scariest books i've read, and one of the few books that at parts i couldn't put down!

Some parts didn't appeal to me as much as others (Thats why i give it a 4). I really liked the book and will encourage people to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cant put this down; master thriller story
This is one of the most exciting books you will ever read. And the scary thing is that the story is true. This page-turner will grip you from the onset and leave you will a chill down yor spine when you realize the nature of the world of virology.

Preston makes the story flow well from beginning to end. He makes feel like you are right in the middle of the story .. almost like you have a role to play. It wont take you long to read this book, and it is written in a comfortable style.

Anyone with an interest in viruses, microbiology, public health, or who just want a good reality thriller should read this book. You will not be disappointed! ... Read more
