5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny
The person who thinks the price of this book is insanity is obviously not a medical professional. Compared to the usual price of a medical text with color illustrations, its a steal.

This outstanding atlas belongs in every office that provides healthcare to children. I've used it continuously since the first edition came out when I was in pediatric residency training a dozen years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars Deserves 6 stars
I can say, without any hesitation, that this is the ONE book that EVERY professional that cares for children should have at his or her disposal. Drs. Zitelli and Davis have produced yet another incredible version of this book, which illustrates almost every important physical finding in pediatrics. This is an indispensible resource that I find myself using constantly, both as a reference and as a guide for parents, who often find the illustrations of diseases helpful in understanding their child's problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for medical residents/MDs
If you are in the medical profession and looking for a great pediatrics reference atlas, this is it. The photos are incredibly helpful in showing common and less common ailments, and after spending some time studying the atlas at random, I have later been able to make diagnoses because I had seen something similar in this atlas. Extremely user-friendly, and fascinating just to browse. Less useful if you're looking for a specific book on dermatology as that comprises just a portion of this book. This was the top book on my "wish list" when I started looking for medical books.

With this Third Edition, Barlow and Durand continue to offer students and professors a text that successfully blends sophisticated research (including new prevention coverage) and approachability within the most widely recognized method of discussing psychopathology. Going beyond simply describing different schools of thought on psychological disorders, David Barlow and V. Mark Durand delve deeper by exploring the interactions of various forces that contribute to psychopathology. Their consistent organizational structure, which enhances comprehension, along with integrated case studies (95% from authors' own files), a conversational writing style, and a variety of study tools, make their text the most balanced learning resource available. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars DSM-IV explained (maybe).
Using DSM-IV criteria throughout, the authors manage to provide a succinct analysis of psychopathology, as seen from a transtheoretical perspective.

The research alone quoted throughout makes this book a valuable resource, but combined with an engaging writing style and top-notch structure, it promises to secure Barlow and Durand's position as authors-to-beat when it comes to the field of Abnormal Psychology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory book
Very thorough treatment of the subject from well rounded, expert authors. Text assumes no previous knowledge, and is quite lengthy because of its comprehensive nature. I have used it many times as a reference text after taking a course in which it was required.

A team of renowned clinicians, anatomists, and basic scientists have radically transformed this classic resource to incorporate all of the newest anatomical knowledge...reorganized it by body region to parallel clinical practice...and added many new surface anatomy, radiologic anatomy, and microanatomy images to complement the exquisite artwork that the book is known for. In addition, a new, multimedia package enables users to consult the printed book... access a dynamic, continuously updated web site...or explore a CD-ROM containing all of the book's images plus 9 fully rotatable, strippable anatomical models. 5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" Written By A Harvard Surgeon
If you have ever been a surgical patient, or expect you might become one in the future, I highly recommend that you read Dr. Atul Gawande's "Complications: A Surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science". If you are a medical student, I highly recommend that you read the book twice - once for you and then again for your patients.

Gawande, as a seventh year Harvard surgical resident, offers reflective insight regarding his observations and experience as a surgeon. From failed attempts to insert a central line as a new resident, to his pride of attending his first medical conference with more senior house personnel, readers easily share in his frustrations, delights, and challenges.

This book will encourage you to appreciate the ethical dilemmas surgeons face as they evaluate new procedures and self-police their own performance and that of their peers. Gawande reveals that even surgeons are mystified by the amazing human body and sometimes cannot explain how or why our bodies react the way they do to surgery.

This book should not be mistaken for a gruesome account of risky surgical procedures performed late at night by sleepy-eyed residents. Gawande's descriptions of his patients and their surgical cases are detailed, but he provides them as intellectual case-in-points rather than the yellow journalism of blood and guts shown on TV and in the movies.

This book will make you think...sometimes harder than you want to...it may even make you realize that surgery is not perfect and neither are even the best surgeons.

A real page turner and a fast read. Don't cheat yourself by skipping over this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Essay Collection from Surgeon, New Yorker author
This book is basically a collection of essays Gawande has published in the New Yorker, where he is a staff writer, along with a few from Slate. His writing style is similar to that of Malcolm Gladwell, Jerome Groopman, and other New Yorker authors of the David Remnick era - intelligent and clear.

Gawande is a surgical resident, so he is experienced enough to have insight into the medical profession and practices of surgeons, but still new enough in the field to bring a keen critical mind and the clarity of a relative outsider's perspective. Also, his compassion is one of his distinct qualities and shines through in the writing.

If you are a regular New Yorker reader, you probably have already read all of these essays. The brilliant essay about why doctors make mistakes is included, as well as memorable essays about when good doctors go bad, and how the practice of autopsy goes in and out of fashion. The only one that was new to me was the one about a surgeons' convention, which was entertaining but not crucial reading. It is nice to have them all in once place, but unless you are a completist or a rabid Gawande fan, I'd recommend getting it from the library or waiting for the paperback.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This book was on my "suggested" reading list for my first year of medical school. I was dreading this list, so I started with this book first. I was extremely surprised to find this book easy to read, entertaining, and enlightening. I managed to read it in less than a day, and it left me with many impression on what to really expect when I undergo my training as a physician and beyond when I am really going to be expected to be a machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complications
One must think to themselves whether or not they trust the man behind the mask. Before reading this book I had never given second thought as to putting my life in my doctor's hands, however that quickly changed.

In the book COMPLICATIONS: A SURGEON'S NOTES ON AN IMPERFECT SCIENCE by Atul Gawande many successes and failures are explored through out his journey as a surgical resident. These stories are interesting as well as informational. As a person in the emergency medical field as well I realized that I see things on a daily basis that parallel the experience as a resident. This book contains multiple essays written by Gawande and it is an easy read if you can stomach the gruesome details. I would recommend this book to anyone especially those in a health care field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Without failures, there are no successes.
Atul Gawande's book Complications: A surgeon's Notes on an Imperfect Science is a gruesomely descriptive account of the path to becoming a good doctor through the successes and failures of being a medical resident. To those with weak stomachs, this book can be difficult to read at times. However, it shows the true humanism of even the most trusted in society. Without failures, there are no successes.

The book begins by describing a trauma incident, involving a young man who had been shot. He was hooked up to a catheter when it was discovered that he was internally bleeding, so he was told that he needed immediate surgery. He was put under, and his chest was opened up. The surgeons looked for a hole or excess blood in his bladder or rectum. What was found? Nothing. Not even a bullet was found. About a week later, a bullet was found in a completely different spot than where it had entered. How can one, as a surgeon, explain this rare phenomenon? Sometimes there are mistakes or misjudgments, and other times there are just bizarre occurrences.

The book is beneficial to read, since all people are patients at one time or another in life. Yes, with successes in medicine, there can always be strange and rare mistakes. However, through reading this book, one can learn that being educated about their health and asking questions no matter how trivial is not only beneficial to the patient; it is beneficial to the resident. This book forces us to nurture an understanding between the doctor and the patient, even in times of trouble. No one wants to be the patient that the resident is "practicing on," but how can we have experienced doctors if no risks are taken? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Graduate Nursing Student
I found the book vague and unclear. It was recommended as a "reference" book for a graduate level pathophysiology course and it was the first book I returned. There are several other books on pathophysiology that are on the market for about the same price or a bit more that are MUCH more thorough and useful for undergraduate, graduate or medical student reference. I would NOT recommend this book for anyone looking at any type of indepth medical information.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very confusing book for USMLE prep
Hi there first of all I would like to say that I am from Brazil, Recife, Pernambuco. I went to a university called UPE, FESP which is in the north east part of Brazil. I bought this book because I thought that it would complement BRS pathology'
But it really didn't so as I thought that it would;
I mean it does but its like discussing too much one some points so its just not really a good book for the USMLE step1 prep; I was actually led to think that because of something I had read on the first aid book that said that '
Really did not like the book at all for the usmle prep. Although you can see that it's a very well made book and they put their hearts into making it but it's just not good enough for the boards.
It's not serving me any good I barely opened it since I bought it and I got their latest edition it was sort of a waste of money for me' I think that this book might be of value for the students at UCSF that are taking classes on introduction to medicine or something like that'
But for the usmle? Forget it'!!!
It's really confusing, and there are no simple index for a particular disease, meaning If you look for something in specific it will be related with some many things that you wont see it right there; there won't be simple diseases listed there for you to look at like that'
Every time I go look for something its not there or it's in contest with something else makes you loose so much time looking at it to find it' It's a very good book but not to be used as a complement to BRS pathology unless you're taking the class.
Hope that this was of help to some of you'
Dr.Claudio A.G.Monteiro Filho.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best anesthesia text for medical students
This is the best text for medical students and first year residents that I have reviewed. It starts from "ground zero", presuming no knowledge of anesthesia, and builds upon a basic science background (especially in areas like pharmacology) to incorporate material learned during the first two years of medical school. My favorite part of the text are the pearls of knowledge that appear throughout the chapters to highlight information. These highlights include tables of important anatomical/ physiological facts, or drug dosing information; as well as extremely useful differential diagnoses for monitor failures or values outside of the normal range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memorize this Book
This book was written for the medical student and a CBY level resident. It is required reading at many medical schools for 3rd year medical students on their anesthesiology clerkship. The goal of this text is to provide the new anesthesiology trainee with enough essential introductory information to provide a solid foundation on which to build a sound and thorough understanding of anesthesiology. The text is very concise and is expertly written.

The text, like the field, is technically based and is not light reading -- in that respect, the title (as well as the book's nickname outside of Indiana as "Baby Miller") may be somewhat misleading to people who may be lured into the false hope of expecting to easily learn the essentials of a very complex medical specialty. Face it -- there is no "Anesthesiology for Dummies" textbook, and there is no *easy* way to learn everything that there is to know to understand the specialty of anesthesiology. Although this book does not provide in-depth coverage of any specific topics, and it is not highly referenced, it does nevertheless provide all of the basic science information that is necessary to provide a rock-solid foundation upon which to build one's clinical knowledge. In that respect, this is a truly *outstanding* introductory textbook.

I bought the first edition of this book as a 3rd year medical student on my anesthesia clerkship. In the course of my anesthesia residency, I bought *three* copies of the second edition of this textbook. As one progresses to various levels of proficiency in anesthesiology, this book will remain a valuable resource, albeit for different reasons. I now have many copies of this book in my library, each of which have been highlighted with different objectives in mind:

This textbook has the highest per page density of examination questions for the In-Service/ABA Written Exams of any textbook in print. I memorized the first edition of this book as a 3rd year medical student for my anesthesia clerkship. I read the second edition of this book as a CBY intern with only 10 days of anesthesiology residency training and scored in the 95th percentile of CBY-level residents on the exam. As a resident you should own a copy of this book and skim through it after each of your in-service exams, highlighting examination questions for later review. After doing this for 4 years you'll have a very consise compendium of written board examination questions. Passing the written boards isn't as hard as many people think. Hint, hint.

The book also provides a very concise review of important facts for the practicing anesthesiologist who wants to review the field in a very time-efficient manner. In this regard, it would also be very helpful to a board certified anesthesiologist who is looking for a concise but thorough review of the basic foundations of anesthetic practice, perhaps for studying for the CDQ exam.

This book is well-recommended for the beginning resident in anesthesiology. It is no substitute for reference texts such as Miller and Barash, which become significantly more valuable to an anesthesiology trainee as their knowledge of the specialty begins to blossom.

I would advise against the recommendation of the reviewer from Sacramento who advises avoiding this book to save for a copy of Miller or Barash. You need to buy this book in addition to buying Miller AND Barash. The Miller and Barash reference texts are too detailed and overwhelming for the novice anesthesiology trainee, and finding basic information in them would be like searching for a needle in a haystack. In contrast, this text provides a very brief, and concise yet very dense presentation of information. If you read this text and find youself struggling through an unreadable collection of disjointed facts, maybe anesthesia isn't for you. People who are successful in the speciality love this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for Med Students and 1st year residents
This book is good for warming-up to the majors(big Miller), it can help to get doing basic anesthesia. Just don't think you'll pass boards and know all of anesthesia by just reading this.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor choice for intro book
as a first year clinical anesthesiology resident, i was told to get this book. I wish I had saved the money for the Lange book. This book was a disjointed collection of facts that were difficult to absorb. In an attempt at brevity, they sacrificed readability. I found myself struggling through many of the chapters and was hard pressed to say I truly understood what I had just read. As I have further progressed in my reading, I feel that the authors should have explained key basic concepts rather than condense "big miller." Not a good beginner book...Would get Lange book and save money for the big miller or barash. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic tool to have beside you !
After 2 years at university, you tend to rely upon certain sources for inspiration to carry on. This book was designed to teach and entertain symbiotically. The new format leads the reader into a pattern of thought that they can use in clinical practice. A must, to further your knowledge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb learning tool
I bought the first edition of this book in 1984. It was superb then and hard to imagine it could be improved. The fourth edition shows what can be done by a knowlegable ophthalmologist who has carefully thought out how to make learning the topic as easy as possible. Having been in practice for over a decade, I know that the photos in the book really do give a realistic representation of an actual patient. The text is comprehensive and explains each clinical condition completely but not verbosely. I have really been stunned by the excellence of this book and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Through their thoughtful and accurate balance of developmental, clinical-diagnostic, and experimental approaches to child and adolescent psychopathology, Eric Mash and David Wolfe's ABNORMAL CHILD PSYCHOLOGY remains the most authoritative, scholarly book in today's abnormal child psychology market. Appropriate for novice and expert alike, this book traces the developmental course of each disorder and shows how biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors interact with a child's environment. Since one of the best ways to introduce students to a particular problem of childhood or adolescence is to first describe a real child, the authors begin each chapter with engaging first-person accounts and case histories of a child with a particular disorder. This child is then referred to throughout the entire chapter, illustrating the categorical and dimensional approaches used to describe disorders, as well as bringing life to the theories Mash and Wolfe present. Embracing today's world with leading-edge coverage of the DSM-IV-TR and dimensional approaches to classification, Mash and Wolfe's comprehensive introduction covers many topics: evidence-based assessment and treatment, contemporary research and cutting-edge theories related to the predominantly inattentive ADHD subtype, early-onset and the developmental propensity model of conduct disorder, the triple vulnerability model of anxiety, the tripartite model in children, depression, and autism. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Great Content; Bad Layout
The content of this book is unsurpassed. The research and breadth of topics covered is phenomenal. The writing is layman and very easy to read.

That being said, the book as a textbook stinks. There are too many pictures, sidebars, subheaders, etc... It's hard to read about a topic when there are interruptions on every page that are interesting but not entirely needed. Each section lasts for about a page, so assigning reading is difficult.

DO NOT BUY!

5-0 out of 5 stars First-rate resource for student and practitioner alike.
A first-rate resource that looks at child and adolescent psychopathology that looks at pathology from a developmental, clinical, diagnostic, and experimental perspective. Sections discuss abnormal child psychology, behavioral disorders, emotional disorders, developmental and learning disorders, and problems related to physical and mental health.

This book is logically formatted, easy to understand, yet deep enough to take student and practitioner alike to the next level in their understanding of child and adolescent psychopathology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid Information, Solid Advice!
I am 41, already have osteoporosis, and was in desperate need of some reliable information on hormone therapy. I read this book from cover to cover like a novel. It makes hormones and their effects so much easier to understand. Now I know how to recognize deficiencies and excesses of the most important hormones. Based on Dr. Reiss's recommendations for working with a physician, I found a doctor that understands my needs, conducted thorough testing, and is prescribing exactly what I need. I bring this book with me to the doctor's office, and I refer to it regularly now. It's going to be one of the most well-used books in my home library. Thank you, Dr. Reiss!

Every Doctor and woman should read this. I can't wait to get started on Dr. Weiss'recomendations. I now have hope!

5-0 out of 5 stars Congratulations Brent & Kevin!!! A really excellent work!
The new edition 2003 of this book compared with the old one of 1996, has a lot of new chapters in rehabilitation with a lot of photos of rehabilitation exercises and methods writting by an excellent, well - known physical therapist Kevin Wilk. It covers a lot of topics in modern Orthopaedic rehabilitation. With personal experiences of 25 years treating patients, I recomend this book to all Physical Therapists in Greece!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an outstanding reference of rehabilitation protocols
Clinical Orthopedic Rehabilitation offers numerous protocols for specific injuries and surgical techniques. It is an excellent supplement to basic rehabilitation books. Information on the basic principles of rehabilitation is limited but it a great tool for an experienced certified athletic trainer or physical therapist to use in developing and implementing protocols. 5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource
The second edition (2001) of this work is indeed an outstanding resource. My daily work includes imaging of sports and musculoskeletal injuries. I find this book frequently useful to supplement deficiencies in my knowledge and experience, and a most useful companion to the second edition (2001) of "Musculoskeletal Ultrasound" by Marnix van Holsbeeck and Joseph Introcaso.

Highly recommended as a workbench resource to those interested in imaging of sports injuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for physical therapists - incredible value
This is an astounding book. When was the last time you saw a 900+ page hard cover book packed with useful photographs and excellent line drawings...The practical advice in this book is unparalleled. No wonder it is an international best-seller. It arrived quickly and well packed from Amazon. Keep up the good work and thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sports Medicine Book I've Ever Used!
The Second edition of Clinical Sports Medicine is the best reference book I have come across as an athletic therapist and professional fitness and lifestyle consultant. I find it very easy to navigate with great illustrations and information. The references are all very recent and evidence-based so you feel confident in following the authors' recommendations. It is particularly good value at 67 US dollars - most hardcover books of this size are about twice that price. The corresponding website has updated information, including relevant published papers, which I find quite helpful also. These authors have really done a fabulous job of classifying sports medicine information in a logical and easy-to-use format. I highly recommend it to anyone in the sports, fitness, and/or health fields!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd edition already a big hit
Author review (sorry about the 5 stars, I couldn't submit without entering something there!)

The 2nd edition (2001) is now readily available world-wide. It contains 7 new chapters and every chapter has been fully updated. It contains practical guidelines for shoulder pain management (with Ben Kibler), new management of anterior knee pain (with Jenny McConnell)and guidelines as to how to teach pelvic stability for patients in treatment of back pain. It includes a complete update of management of tendon injuries incorporating recent advances in treatment (with Jill Cook, Hakan Alfredson, etc). Medical chapters include updates on drugs in sport, managing heat illness and ethics in sport. Large, practical chapters describe sports medicine care for the female athlete, the pediatric athlete, the disabled athlete and seniors. At less than $...dollars, this 918 page hard-cover 2nd edition, with over 900 illustrations, is extremely good value. We would argue the best value of any clinical sports medicine text, and this is reflected by this edition selling almost 10,000 copies already.

The clinical sports medicine website (...) has the full table of contents and the first 2 pages of another 8 chapters. Also, it has a complete chapter that can be downloaded (Achilles pain) and a large chunk of the shoulder pain chapter. There are additional references with weblinks on the 'reading room' icon. This site has direct links to Amazon.com for ordering etc. If you are a physical therapist, athletic trainer, massage therapist, or primary care physician you will be most interested in the website.

The New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine recently reviewed this edition and said 'The world's best sports medicine book just got better'....Check it out for yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent practical book for clinicians
This very practical book that uses symptom-oriented chapters to provide very helpful guidance to anyone who sees sports medicine patients. It is useful for physical therapists (like me) but my colleagues who are doctors and masseurs also use it. I thoroughly recommend it and find its illustrations of physical examination particularly useful. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great educational book
I actually work in Central Sterile Processing. I found this book very useful with the information of surgical procedures, anotomy charts , surgical instruments. Plus it is very clear on its format, easy to understand and follow. This book will answer many questions that students going for surgical technology need or simple just like me, a person who works with surgical instruments on the daily basis.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't spend the money
This text is horable, there is info that is wrong. I am ST student . I would buy Alexdars it's the best book around.

5-0 out of 5 stars great
I bought this book based on comments from other buyers and the book is great. In fact my teacher also purchased this book and it's so much better than our school text book. I like how in depth this book goes and the variety of surgical procedures it has.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an excellent book if you are a surgical technology student. I bought this book in addition to my required book for school becuase it was so much better than the required book. It is very descriptive and has lots of helpful pictures. The AST has done a wondeful job with this text book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of information for the Surgical Technologist student
This book is full of information that is helpful. I am in my second term of taking a Surgical Technology course. We just start the real meat of the course... from patient position, drapes, and starting in a couple of weeks gi surgery. This book has it all and the instruments used in the major and minor tray. We have now the Alexander's which is good for the breakdown of different surgerical procedures but when it comes to the Surgical Tech's role there is not much. I'm glad that the AST has finally written a book. It will come handy now and throughout my career as a Surgical Tech. Kudos to AST...well done! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Never has so much said so little
This thing is a beast! It's difficult to read - the space between lines is so short, you feel like you're reading the same line over and over. The material repeats itself quite often - so much that the book could use some editing. I guess the authors get paid by the word. As a nursing student in an ADN program with absolutely no interest in the field of Pediatric Nursing, I resented having to lug this turkey around. I'm sure it's treasured by pediatric nurses and educators world wide, but if you've got to buy it, get a used one or an older edition. No need in breaking your bank account and your back!

5-0 out of 5 stars 7th Edition worth its weight in gold
Whaley and Wongs updated bible for paediatric nurses is essential reading now it has gone in to its seventh edition, Those who had the 1995 version will already be familiar with the fully comprehensive care plans and evidence based practice rigorously detailed within the book, but 2002's new edition not only updates knowledge but also improves clarity using excellent illustrations, and also includes an entire new chapter regarding community care- an issue at the forefront of modern nursing. This is a core text for all students and qualified nurses alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars antsy nursing student
I have a hard time reading some books that are required in nursing school. However this book is exceptional! I loved this reader friendly textbook. It is very easy to understand. I wish more of my books were like this one. Thank you Donna Wong.
