4-0 out of 5 stars helpful to anyone trying to diagnose mental illness
This is a highly practical reminder book for conducting mental illness diagnosis interviews. It is well-written and well-organized. Probably will be most useful for medical students and psychiatry residents, but may also help young and possibly even experienced psychiatrists. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy-dandy little notebook.
This interview guide is the perfect companion to the novice practitioner. Zimmerman has condensed the interview sequence of the major disorders so that you can logically follow, and intentionally interview a client.

This book is a little pricey for its size, but the content is A-1.

3-0 out of 5 stars A quick handy guide
I felt that this little pocket guide was really easy to read and helpful, especially when I needed to specify questions for certain interviewing sessions with clients. I would recommend it to anyone who needs a little extra help with difficult clients. Great for Students! ... Read more

Book Description

The leading resource on identifying children’s problems through play therapy—completely revised The first edition of Play Diagnosis and Assessment was the first volume of its kind to provide a comprehensive overview of the diagnosis and assessment of children through play. Over the past several years, numerous changes within the field have encouraged the development of improved techniques that surpass traditional assessment protocols and methods, such as new scales, more focused procedures, and instruments with higher levels of reliability and validity than have been previously established. Now, this classic book has been updated to address and reflect these ongoing changes. Focusing on the needs of the clinician, this new edition presents empirically tested diagnostic tools and describes improvements to existing play therapy assessment instruments, such as new testing instruments for time-limited therapy and early intervention assessment tools for young children. The book is divided into six sections:

  • Developmental Play Assessments
  • Diagnostic Play Assessments
  • Parent-Child Interaction Play Assessments
  • Family Play Assessments
  • Peer Interaction Play Assessments
  • Projective Play Assessments
The procedures described in each section target a variety of ages and populations, representing some of the most valuable, informative, and sensitive contributions to the field. Integrating formal research with clinical methods, Play Diagnosis and Assessment, Second Edition is the definitive resource for clinicians dedicated to the identification of children’s problems and the best ways to intervene through the lighthearted and productive use of play therapy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Material, But.............
The Coreys have enormous understanding of group processes and the book contains a lot of very valuable material. BUT, the Coreys also use about three times as many words as necessary to make each point. They repeat the same ideas over and over again, making the book very tedious to read. It is valuable reading, however, if you can suffer through all the verbiage.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great little reference book
As a case manager for people who have serious mental illnesses and co-occurring disorders, I like this smaller, handy guide to the cumbersome DSM-IV. It covers the basics without going into nitpicking detail. I use it instead of the regular DSM-IV. If I need the regular DSM-IV, then I borrow a co-worker's. Book Description

After almost three years in print and more than 100,000 copies sold, The Bipolar Child has made an indelible mark on the field of psychiatry and has become the resource that families rely on. Now in the first book about early-onset bipolar disorder is completely revised and expanded.

Bipolar disorder--manic depression--was once thought to be rare in children. Now researchers are discovering that not only can bipolar disorder begin very early in life, but also that it is much more common than ever imagined. Yet the illness is often misdiagnosed or overlooked. Why?Bipolar disorder manifests itself differently in children than in adults, and in children there is an overlap of symptoms with other childhood psychiatric disorders. As a result, these kids may be given any number of psychiatric labels: "ADHD," "Depressed," "Oppositional Defiant Disorder," "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder," or "Separation Anxiety Disorder." Too often they are treated with stimulants or antidepressants--medications that can actually worsen the bipolar condition.

Since the publication of the first edition, thousands of families have gotten to the root of their children’s behaviors, and found the answers they were looking for in The Bipolar Child. Drawing upon recent advances in the fields of neuroscience and genetics, the Papoloses convey what is known and not known about the illness. They comprehensively detail the diagnosis, tell how to find good treatment and medications, and advise parents about ways to advocate effectively for their children at school. Included in these pages is the first Individual Education Plan--IEP--ever published for a bipolar child. The book also offers critical information about the stages of adolescence, hospitalization, the world of insurance, and the psychological impact the illness has on the child. New to this edition are information on promising new mood-stabilizing drugs and omega-3 fatty acids, more advice on getting appropriate school accommodations, and a full discussion about the complexities of family life when more than one family member has the illness. A critical new chapter deals with the deficits in the area of executive functions that have recently been identified as a common feature of a bipolar disorder. This chapter walks parents through a neuropsychological testing and–for the first time–recommends a specific battery of tests that should be administered to these children and adolescents.

The Bipolar Child is rich with the voices of parents, siblings, and the children themselves, opening up the long-closed world of the families struggling with this condition. Already proven, in its original edition, to be an invaluable resource for parents whose children suffer from mood disorders, as well as the professionals who treat and educate them, this book will prove to have major public health significance.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bipolar Child and Matt the Moody Hermit Crab
I consider this book to be my "Bible" when it comes to questions, information and concerns about children with early onset bipolar disorder. I reference it often and I'm so glad the Papolos's have taken the time to meet and talk with so many people who have children with bipolar disorder. Their information and recommendations are based on information that comes directly from the perspective of parents-something so often missing in books about mental illness in children. I would also recommend that children read Matt the Moody Hermit Crab by Caroline McGee. While there are many books out there for adults, there are not many written for children with this disease. Ms. McGee's book was the first one I was able to find that was appropriate for my son's age and reading level.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish this book had been around when my son was 3
While many people believe that Bipolar disorder cannot be diagnosed in children, the psychiatric community is now determining that many times the diagnosis' that were given as ADHD have been incorrect and were actually the behaviors of Childhood Onset Bipolar Disorder. While I knew my child was Bipolar because of family history, I could not convince the professionals who were "helping us" and I did not know what I was supposed to do to help him. I wish this book had been around when my son was three years old and could have guided my husband and I. We went through years of dysfunctional behavior, spiraling downward until we could no longer cope with our child's behavior and finally sent him to a therapeutic residential school for 2 1/2 years beginning at age 12 1/2. While suicide is the ultimate loss of a child, sending them away in the hopes that they will get their head together, never knowing if the therapy will take, always wondering if people are being kind to your child, missing important stages of development, not sharing those few moments of sunlight and happiness that you can snatch when they are in a good mood, is devastating. My heart felt as if it had been ripped out of my chest and I was a walking zombie for the first year and one-half. People who say that parents and teachers can "manage" this type of child without the appropriate medications and think that the average onset is still in adulthood are fooling themselves and doing irreparable harm to their children. Had this book been available 12 1/2 years ago, our story might have been different. Our child might have been able to stay at home and share our lives instead of being sent away because we could no longer "manage" him. Don't fool yourselves-learn all that you can about this disorder and this book will help you start that steep learning curve.

5-0 out of 5 stars What's in a name
It's a very comprehensive book directed at parents but containing a lot of technical information about neuroscience within its 440 pages. Part II "Inside the brain and mind" would be heavy going for anyone without a medical or scientific background although the writing is admirably lucid.
I did not find any arrors of fact but readers should be aware that the Papolos's extend the diagnosis of bipolar disorder beyond what is generally accepted. They may be right but at present there is no objective test like a blood test or an X-ray to prove the diagnosis. It is often suspected when a child is made worse by drugs in the Ritalin class, which is a tough way to make a diagnosis. A strong family history of classical manic-depressive illness as described by Kraepelin is another clue. Most diagnoses of childhood mental ilnesses are fuzzy. (The DSM criteria have aroused a lot of sharp satirical comment). One result is that that a lot of the medication use is empirical "let's try this and see."
The Papalos's also emphasize the possibility that treatment of depression with an anti-depressant drug can precipitate mania. This can happen in adults but its implications for treatment are controversial.
They tend to be over-optimistic about the effects of many anti-convulsant drugs and perhaps give too much credence to single reports of spectacular improvement.
I appreciated their harrowing but warmly sympathetic descriptions of life with a severely mentally ill child and how to cope with the well-meaning (or ill-meaning) critics who say things like "give him to me for a week and he'll be different child."
It's a very practical book for parents in the the United States in dealing with questions like the costs of treatment. The advice about gaming the system and the the complexities of IDEA and IEP etc is particularly good although it is so detailed and specific that it would not help much in other countires, even Canada.

5-0 out of 5 stars Footsoldiers In The Battle To Comfort Children
One might argue that the authors attempted to squeeze too much information between one set of covers. It does seem that there are actually two books here: one, a medical analysis of the etiology of Bipolar Disorder, particularly early onset in very young children; and another book guiding parents in recognizing the symptoms and navigating the medical, insurance, and governmental mazes to obtain treatment for their children. Be that as it may, the authors have written a very provocative treatment of Bipolar Disorder that brings into print what psychiatrists, mental health professionals, and many parents have been concerned about for some time. For the past decade or so, there has been growing concern about the precision of children's diagnoses vis-à-vis Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. While many parents and school officials wonder if the ADHD diagnosis is rendered too often, there is another school of thought emerging that as many as a third of ADHD diagnoses are in reality cases of early onset Bipolar Disorder.

The authors are not alarmists; their stance, research, and professional networking is mainstream. But this work is alarming. It argues from the testimony of hundreds of parents connected to the authors from around the country by the Internet, that their children were much more violently ill than DSM-IV criteria for ADHD would admit, and that traditional ADHD treatments were not working, in fact making the situations worse. Admitting that the ADHD/bipolar differential is tricky for the diagnostician, the authors have arrived at useful clinical clues. For example, when a hyperactive child breaks something, more often than not he is angry with himself for his clumsiness. The bipolar child, on the other hand, often demonstrates an outward rage or anger with his destructive actions directed at family and peers. The Papoloses note also that bipolar children are more inclined to night terrors and violent imagination in story telling and art work.

The authors point out that pediatric pharmacology in the treatment of early-onset Bipolar Disorder is extremely critical and presents a wide array of problems. As noted above, Bipolar Disorder can be mistaken for ADHD. The standard medication for the latter has been stimulants, which unfortunately will severely aggravate the manic tendencies of the bipolar client. Other clients may present as depressed, and even though the FDA has severely cautioned against the use of SSRI's with depressed children, it has not forbidden their use outright. In children and adults, SSRI's have been found to trigger manic episodes where the depressed mood was a feature of misdiagnosed Bipolar Disorder.

Even when the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder is correctly made, the medication problems for children are significant. Over the years the common practice has been the use of such mood stabilizers as Lithium and Depakote. These medications have required regular blood work, which has made compliance an issue with children who naturally despise needles. More recently, anticonvulsant and atypical psychotic medications have proven useful in severe cases. However, these medications involve significant side effects ranging from aggravated weight gain and acne to such extremes as facial distortions and the other trademark symptoms of psychotic medications. The Papoloses examine each medication, pro and con, to assist parents and practitioners in treating and educating their clients.

Parents are reminded that dating back to 1973 federal law has mandated the educational opportunities of children with mental disorders. In a similar vein, children's rights to medical treatment, including institutionalization for weeks or months, are also reviewed under the provisions of Medicare and Medicaid, among other plans. The authors are thorough in spelling out the rights and the best procedures to follow in dealing with the bureaucracies of government, schools, and insurance companies. A number of useful organizations, with phone numbers and web sites, are provided. However, in the two states whose budgets I monitor, New York and Florida, Medicaid funding for children has been significantly reduced due to strapped state budgets. At this writing, California is considering wholesale reduction of service as well. Consequently, even those parents who are faithful to the advice rendered by the Papoloses may have difficulty in accessing service. The authors' advice here, while correct may be a bit too rosy in the present health care environment. In addition, I attempted to use several of the web sites, and some of them have been disbanded.

But in the final analysis, this work fulfills what I think were the intentions of the authors. First, it provides assurances to parents that the bizarre and deeply troubling behavior of their children may have organic causes for which they are not responsible. Caregivers are reminded that they are not alone, that they have rights, and most importantly, that there are support groups and practitioners who are beginning to understand the scope of their problems. Second, this work is successful in encouraging practitioners to think more expansively about the pervasiveness of early-onset Bipolar Disorder. Until fairly recently popular wisdom had that Bipolar Disorder was "a grownup's disorder." Today any practitioner will tell you that in the absence of significant personal and family history, the establishment of a bipolar diagnosis is extremely difficult. So much the more for children, particularly when we are not conditioned to routinely look for manic depressive features.

The Papoloses also discuss the troubling prospect that disorders of mood are gradually increasing in scope and intensity in America and appearing at earlier ages than ever before. I do not expect that this contention will go unchallenged. But if the authors are anywhere near correct in this contention, our research into the causes and treatment of many children's mental disorders, which now appear inherited and to emanate from the frontal regions of the brain, must accelerate not only for the safety of our children and families, but as a humane gesture to their suffering.

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of really helpful info
This book is such a wonderful resource, I cannot count how many times I have pulled it out to look up information. Some of it is a bit technical for me, but it reassured me that I was not a bad parent, that I was not alone, and that there are professionals out there working on helping kids like mine.

I also recommend "If Your Child Is Bipolar." Between these two books, I feel like I have the information and support I need to really make a difference in the life of my child and the rest of my families' as well.

Thank you to Dr. Papalos for all that he is doing to help our kids! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Proberly the worst book I have efter tried to read.
I am a medical student in Denmark.
We are forces to use this book, and I don't understand why.
The build up of the book is unstructurial, it contains a lot of errors, and in the chapter about immunopathology, the auther makes a complete mess of the immunsystem, with in two pages.
I will recorment any other book then this, if you are going for basic, structiural knowlege.
The book simply needs restructuring, where you have a proper introduction to a subject, then more in deep with the subject, and end the end, how this is show is different diseases, and if possiable in the end of the chaptor, a breaf review of what you have learned, and the different characteristic of a disease.

Pathology is an exiting and very important subject, and it deserves a better handeling then what this books does.

Book Description

Regarded as the "Bible" of mammalian embryo manipulation techniques since the 1986 publication of the first edition of Manipulating the Mouse Embryo: A Laboratory Manual, the third edition of this essential laboratory resource has now been completely reorganized, rewritten, and updated by a new cast of authors. The result is a compilation of new, cutting–edge protocols that include embryonic stem cell production and genetic manipulation, mouse chimeras, mouse cloning, assisted reproduction strategies (including intracytoplasmic sperm injection and in vitro fertilization), whole embryo culture systems, electroporation, embryo and gamete cryopreservation and rederivation, and gene expression, as well as more extensive background information on the use of these techniques. The "gold standard" techniques for applying recombinant DNA technology to investigations of mammalian embryonic development included in the first two editions of this book are also updated and recast, as is the summary of the current state of understanding of mouse development at the molecular level. This book is the premier authoritative and comprehensive source of technical and theoretical guidance for mouse developmental biologists and geneticists and is an essential resource for newcomers to these fields. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected
Zollinger's features very good illustrations and notes (including postoperative care) for nearly every imaginable procedure in gastrointestinal surgery (including exotic and complex operations such as total pancreatectomy and Klatskin tumor resections), short of bariatric surgery. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, fundoplication and splenectomy are covered as well.

However, information is sorely lacking on breast surgery (all we get are descriptions of modified radical mastectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy; useful, but no mention of conservative breast surgery), head and neck surgery (limited to near-total thyroidectomy and radical neck dissection) and thoracic surgery (posterolateral thoracotomy and that's it). No information *at all* on urology (as a resident, I'd gladly trade my plates on total pancreatectomy for a few on nephrectomy, nephrostomy and cystostomy). Gynecologic and vascular procedures are adequately covered.

In my copy, there is nothing on page 391 (Plate CLXXXIII on posterolateral thoracotomy is blank).

So, as a resident, Zollinger's won't be quite as useful as I expected, given the limited range of non-gastrointestinal general surgical procedures covered. However, I suspect I will make good use of its excellent in-depth coverage of gastrointestinal surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic, artistic
Truely one of the most successful books of the kind, the strucure is well designed, the operations included cover a eide range of procedures, and most noticeble is the very high quality of the explanatory figures, sometimes by just brawsing through them you get 80% of what to do... the text is well written and concise. You will find many approaches for each operation. of course it will be impossible to gather all the surgical craft in one book. but this one succeeds in collecting a large chunk of it. i highly recommend it for all juniors and postgrads alike. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent buy
This is, in my opinion THE BOOK for a pathologist dealing with dermatopathology. The writing is clear and crisp and I appreciate the morphologically-oriented classifications, instead of the more common admixture of ethiologic, morphologic and topographic attempts of classification, many of the categories meaning little to the morphologist.

5-0 out of 5 stars "A tour de force of dermatopathology"...
Weedon's Skin Pathology is a must-have for any pathologist in practice or in training. This book is considered a standard reference in dermatopathology. "A tour de force of dermatopathology", as British Journal of Biomedical Science puts it. The updated version of this book contains more than 1,800 full-color illustration. As a pathologist in training, I highly recommend this book to fellow residents and pathologist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading
I believe this book ought to be required reading for anyone who's considering becoming a parent, considering being born to a parent or a pair of them, contemplating being a brother, sister aunt or uncle or maybe having a wife, husband or friend.

The book is about power, manipulation, boundaries, lies and evil as they exist within ourselves and the people around us. They don't require that we believe in them to exist, but if we're able to recognize them for what they are it helps. Recognizing it doesn't make it easy, but it makes it possible.

Peck's premises mightn't be entirely correct, as some suggest. But whether it's 'evil' or merely something not evil that could get a job being evil if there was such an occupation, Peck's approach works.

I recommend this book for anyone who knows, loves, cares about and lives with the agonies of the phenomenon Peck calls 'evil'.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag of religion, science, and self-help
This book was controversial when it was published in 1983, and it is interesting to examine Dr. Peck's arguments and conclusions in light of the past twenty years. The book's major premise is that the phenomena of human evil should be studied as a branch of psychiatry, subject to the strict scrutiny and observance of science. Peck maintains that we have only a very dim view of how evil operates, and what forms it takes, because the scientific community has always refused to make the necessary value judgements to discern good from evil. We need to find a healthy middle ground between religious and psychiatric schools of thought. Peck supports his theories with many anecdotal stories from practicing psychiatry in government, military, and private settings.

These case studies are the best part of the book, even if you do not agree with Peck's conclusions. They present fascinating examples of the depths of evil in some "everyday people" and how these people manipulate others to avoid being exposed. Peck makes an interesting deduction that evil results from the twin forces of laziness and intense narcissism. As a liberal Christian, he describes (and encourages) using exorcisms to heal patients of demonic possession. Unfortunately, his political views obviously biased his perceptions of the military and the Vietnam War, which he discusses at length in a chapter on "group evil".

Overall, the book is a mixed bag of theology, science, and self-help. Personally, I do not believe narcissistic parents should be labeled as "evil," while mass-murdering psychotics are merely "sick". Nor do I accept Peck's opinions (which he presents as fact) about Satan, Hell, and the salvation of non-Christians. But the call for the scientific community to engage in a systematic study of evil has proved beneficial, since it has resulted in increased use of psychiatry in law enforcement and criminal rehabilitation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but flawed
The author writes from a mainstream Christian perspective, which is certainly legitimate. He describes certain case studies where the patients suffered from extreme narcissism. I am not convinced that all the cases represent the narcissistic form of evil that Peck tries to define; some may instead be exhibiting psychopathy or types of schizophrenia. In one case, for example, the pathology exhibited itself as victimless if one exempts the patient herself from victim status.

Peck sets forth a case for a scientific study of evil and writes engagingly about mental illness and the naming of evil. He also investigates the phenomena of possession and exorcism. It becomes quite interesting when he looks at the fiction of J R R Tolkien and the work of Erich Fromm and Martin Buber and when he discusses the three major theological models of evil, i.e. the nondualism of certain Eastern faiths, the integrated dualism espoused by Buber and the traditional Christian one of diabolic dualism as he terms it.

Where the author goes wrong in a big way, is in his study of the My Lai atrocity or rather the conclusions he draws from it: his suggestion for a military draft (involuntary service) and his criticism of specialisation. Here he reveals some utopian notions that I find very questionable. A compulsory draft goes against the principles of individual freedom and besides, utopian schemes invariably turns out evil. The good doctor should know that by now. The coercion involved in society laying that sort of claim on the individual is a totalitarian concept that is by definition evil.

Another misconception that I noticed is that Dr Peck still thinks that psychotherapy is a universally good idea, notwithstanding all evidence to the contrary. In addition, he claims that most psychologists are kind, gentle people. That has not been the case in my personal experience or in the literature. It would not surprise me if narcissism were as prevalent amongst psychotherapists as it is in the general population.

In this way Dr Peck acts as an apologist for psychotherapy as he also did with his mega selling book The Road Less Travelled. No doubt this therapy has helped some people but it is not the panacea Dr Peck would like to make it. With all of the above provisos, I still recommend this book. People Of The Lie contains enough that is thought provoking and does provide some original insights while asking some provocative questions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ouch!
Having read "The Road less traveled" - I was sure I'd love to read "People of the lie" but only later I realised that in this book M.Scott Peck spoke his obscure thoughts that none but him can understand!
I felt really bad reading about his former patients and being so judgemental towards them without any strong good reasons. Especially with the patient named George!

M. Scott Peck warned us that this book is dangerous. Perhaps he meant stupid but he just couldn't say that for his own book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Only a platform
I read this book, and right away could see the Dean for whom I had worked, he is truly an evil man. He is so wrapped up in himself, and will not listen to anything about other people. He treats others like they do not exist. I personally feel sorry for his wife. I remember one time the accreditors were there to accredit the U., he kept turning the conversation back to himself. I'm surprised the U. was accredited. It was a good day when that evil man retired.

However, I believe the author could have left out the pages concerning the Vietnam war. He is using this book as a platform to bad mouth the Vietnam War. His comments are not appropriate to the subject, He is implying the men who went to Vietnam and did what they did and didn't report it as evil, perhaps it was because they knew that Johnson was running the war, and if they said anything they'd be immediately Court Marshalled. LBJ did not take kindly to criticism.

The reason I gave this book one star is I believe the author is using it as a platform to voice his displeasure against the Vietnam War. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A&L 5th Edition Very Disappointing!
I purchased this review to help prepare for the ARRT Reinstatement exam following my return to the field, and though I felt that it covered the core content well I was extremely disappointed that so many of the questions, both in the book and on the CD-ROM, had incorrect answers. The expanation of the answers even explained HOW the *correct* answer was incorrect!! Maybe the editors should have taken a little more time! I became very frustrated with this and gave it up for a (more expensive and much more worth it) Kettering Review. Would never recommend this review... especially to new grads taking the ARRT for the first time!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the CD-ROM.
I just took the registry exam in April of 2004. Honestly, I didn't use this book all that much. There are so many typos that it is hard to read and some of them change the meaning of the questions. Some of the questions contradict each other. Some say to use gonadal shielding on all exams on all patients - even pelvis routines. Others will say the right answer is to only use it when the gonads are within a certain distance from the primary beam or when shielding won't interfere with imaging the pertinent anatomy. That makes it difficult to study. I did use the CD-ROM that was included. It helped me to know how I would do on the actual exam. For instance, it helped me to know that I needed to slow down and read the whole question.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mary
Just took the registry in May 2004. This study guide was of very little use. The questions on the real registry are structured totally different than the way the book presents the material. Very little positioning questions or anatomy on the real registry. Only about 40% of the registry questions are covered in this book. Keep your textbooks and save your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Text- 60% of test questions were word for word
I was a little apprehensive about taking the computerized exam, but after studying out the the PREP text and taking the exams in this book, i felt confident. However, when i took the test, i realized that i had seen the majority of questions from the practice tests. I knew the answers before i finished reading the questions. I passed the registry easily. On the other hand, there are several versions of the computer test and other class members of mine received far different questions. All and all the book gave a great feel for the quality and level of difficulty of test questions. HIGHLY RECCOMMENDED.

1-0 out of 5 stars DISAPPOINTED--4TH ED.
Our program has used this review book for 3 editions and liked it. Our students who began using the new 4th ed. complained that there were NO references to Bontrager in the anatomy and positioning sections. We use Bontrager as our primary textbook and the elimination of this major radiography text as a reference is disappointing and puzzling. Our students are also encouraged to buy Merrill's and the majority do. The students use the 9th ed of Merrill's and the refs are for the 8th ed. Merrill's has been out for over a year. The majority of refs were for a new book by Cornuelle. How are students suppose to find information in a text that is only in the library and one that is not a major textbook in use at this time (at least we know of nobody who uses it)? The author has done a major disservice to radiography students. As a result, we will not use this text any longer. ... Read more

A book chronicling one of the worst human disasters in recorded history really has no business being entertaining. But John Kelly's The Great Mortality is a page-turner despite its grim subject matter and graphic detail. Credit Kelly's animated prose and uncanny ability to drop his reader smack in the middle of the 14th century, as a heretofore unknown menace stalks Eurasia from "from the China Sea to the sleepy fishing villages of coastal Portugal [producing] suffering and death on a scale that, even after two world wars and twenty-seven million AIDS deaths worldwide, remains astonishing." Take Kelly's vivid description of London in the fall of 1348: "A nighttime walk across Medieval London would probably take only twenty minutes or so, but traversing the daytime city was a different matter.... Imagine a shopping mall where everyone shouts, no one washes, front teeth are uncommon and the shopping music is provided by the slaughterhouse up the road." Yikes, and that's before just about everything with a pulse starts dying and piling up in the streets, reducing the population of Europe by anywhere from a third to 60 percent in a few short years. In addition to taking readers on a walking tour through plague-ravaged Europe, Kelly heaps on the ancillary information and every last bit of it is captivating. We get a thorough breakdown of the three types of plagues that prey on humans; a detailed account of how the plague traveled from nation to nation (initially by boat via flea-infested rats); how floods (and the appalling hygiene of medieval people) made Europe so susceptible to the disease; how the plague triggered a new social hierarchy favoring women and the proletariat but also sparked vicious anti-Semitism; and especially, how the plague forever changed the way people viewed the church. Engrossing, accessible, and brimming with first-hand accounts drawn from the Middle Ages, The Great Mortality illuminates and inspires. History just doesn't get better than that. --Kim Hughes ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Attempt to Take Us Back
I have read a great number of books on the Black Death of varying approaches ranging from the scientific (trying to identify the exact identity of the illness, its symptoms and its vectors) to the social (trying to give a sense of the human impact of the disease).Within this ranges of approaches some have written more readable accounts than others. In The Great Mortality, Mr. Kelly definitely leans more towards the social approach and, as a writer, he is. . .not bad.

The title itself indicates Mr. Kelly's desire to give us a feel of the times.Terming this plague "the Black Death" is actually quite a modern designation.Writers in the day more accurately called the event "the Great Mortality."

In terms of the focus of the book, Mr. Kelly traces the progress of the mortality from the steppes of Asia through Italy, Spain, France, England and spaces far flung and in between.Always, he tries to track its logical progress and, always, he tries to give us a sense of its impact on the people by quoting from writings and statistics of the time.Much of this primary source material is fascinating though it is sometimes feast or famine.England, for example, seems to get more attention simply because it is from there that we have more records of the time.Still, there is a lot of good stuff here about a lot of places and events.

The problem with this book is that, overall, it gives the impression of a certain vagueness. There is an expected amount of uncertainty dealing with an historical event so many centuries ago; however, as a reader, I like to get the sense that the author I'm reading has a certain confidence in his assertions and his sources.Mr. Kelly's anecdotes get quite circular as he recounts tale after tale of death and the medieval writer's tendency toward hyperbole can make things difficult but he rarely draws conclusions and is sometimes unclear when he does.He often quotes things like death rates for different regions but always in ranges and rarely spells out why he decides to settle on a certain figure. He notes the extraordinarily high death rate for clergy in England and implies that this is because of their care for the people but then hints that they might not really have been doing there jobs so well after all. This kind of writing can get a bit unsettling.

However, these are quibbles in what is basically a well written account. As a math & science teacher, my tastes tend more towards the scientific accounts of the plague but I found this book quite enjoyable.I wouldn't say Mr. Kelly manages to take us back to the fourteenth century but he gives us a taste of it and definitely gives us a logical and informative look back.I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb recapitulation of when much of the world died
This book is scary, even though modern technology has dramatically reduced the probability of such an event repeating. For decades, any mention of massive worldwide deaths was in the context of a nuclear war. However, many people have always considered it more likely that a wave of death that kills hundreds of millions will be a plague rather than a war. It is also very likely that the onset of such a deadly plague will ignite many wars, as people try to flee the infected areas and those in other areas try to keep the infected away.
There is no more effective barometer of how devastating the Black Death was than to read that the relative number of deaths in Europe can be compared to the numbers that would be killed in an all-out nuclear war. The only difference would be that the Black Death left the fundamental infrastructure intact. The statistics regarding the percentages that died of plague are in dispute; there is a hard minimum of 40% and an estimated maximum of 70%. In many cases, death also came very quickly; people suddenly grew sick and died in a matter of hours. Experts in forensic medicine have postulated that the cycle of illness reinforced itself. As more people got sick and those that could, fled the plague areas, there was no one left to tend to the sick. The mortality rate would most likely have been much lower if there had been someone to do things like fetching water for those who were ill.
It was fascinating to read the data on how the plague moved across the earth. The best evidence is that it originated in central Asia and moved outward in all directions from there. While we in the west tend to speak only of the consequences to Western Europe, the devastation was just as severe in the areas of Asia where it could easily spread. Kelly is to be commended for at least mentioning these facts, although most of his data involves what was happening in Europe. An amazing fact is that the population of China declined from approximately 120 million in 1200 to approximately 60 million in 1400. Not all of this was due to plague, but much of it was.
Another amazing fact is that even though around 50% of the population suddenly died, the societies remained largely intact. There are many possible reasons for this; Kelly puts the most likely forward. The survivors were in a state of shock and one of the few remaining stable structures in their life was the social order. It is also the case that they had no idea what was causing the plague, so there was a limited fear of carriers from the outside.
One of the most interesting results of the plague is how it eventually overturned the social order. Labor costs skyrocketed after it was over, completely changing the social structure. With fewer people, food prices dropped and it was necessary for people to make more with less human labor. The wave of deaths also meant that the median age of the population rose, so that those still alive could not do as much labor. It also caused the birth of public health facilities, it was amusing to read the origin of the phrase, "look out below." Before the contents of a chamber pot was thrown into the street, it was necessary for the thrower to yell, "Look out below" three times.
Reading this book is a bit unnerving, because we all know that similar dangers still exist. The flu pandemic after World War I killed millions and new dangers such as SARS and the Ebola virus are regularly in the news. The sudden mutation of a microbe into a much more virulent form is an ever-present danger, it happened at least once and it could happen again. This is an excellent recapitulation of what could be the greatest natural disaster in the history of the human species. Hopefully, that will remain the case.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Plague as a Living Thing
Kelly has written a wonderful book describing the causes and effect of the Great Mortality of 1347-1350.To me the most striking aspect of the book is the author's representation of the plague not just as a bacterial organism but as a living force that acts to disrupt culture and civilization. While I found that I wasn't interested so much in the human affairs such as the trial of Queen Joanna in Avignone, I was completely absorbed as the author discussed the ecological upheavals that took place leading up to the plague's entry into Europe as well as the socio-economic factors that spread it.This leads to a personification of the spread of the disease that is powerful and gripping in its intensity. It is almost as if one is reading a thriller where the plague's spread is the antagonist stalking an unsuspecting victim.

This book is a very good treatment of not only the plague but of the series of events and combination of factors that lead to the significant decline of Europe following its initial blossomingin the 13th century.
