5-0 out of 5 stars Another fantastic book by Dr. Stoelting!
I must agree with Dr. Alqasaim; this book is excellent. Diagrams are well-done, as are the chapters - en tota.

The book has two distinct sections. The first half of the book is dedicated to the subject of pharmachology, and the second, physiology. This is not a large broad-based text.

Additionally, this is not a book to take the place of the old basic science "stand-by's" like Goodman & Gilman's, or Guyton. However, this book is highly useful for review in those aforesaid subjects, as related to the practice of Anesthesiology.

Absolutely well thought-out and executed.

A must-have for your home/office medical library.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Basic Information
I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book, as I have high expectations of a book from Dr. Stoelting. However, I found that this book contains only basic information. It is good for a quick reference, but if you are looking for in-depth information about a specific topic, you will have to look elsewhere.

Book Description

"Operative Strategy" is the advance plan that the surgeon develops to anticipate and avoid technical pitfalls and potential danger points of an operation. The goal is to make each surgical procedure safe and without complications. Completely revised and now under the editorship of Carol E.H. Scott-Conner, Chassin's Operative Strategies in General Surgery: An Expositive Atlas, Third Edition provides a clear exposition of all basic procedures including surgery of the digestive tract, breast, abdominal wall, selected head and neck, and endocrine system. Surgery is currently in a state of transition, and many procedures are being performed by minimally-invasive means. While some might argue that "old" operations should be discarded, no operations have been deleted from the text, thus providing the reader with a repository of rare techniques in addition to cutting-edge, minimally invasive approaches. In addition, nineteen new chapters have been added, including discussions of: -laparoscopic basics -laparoscopic nissen fundoplication -laparoscopic esophagomyotomy -laparoscopic plication of perforated ulcer -laparoscopic appendectomy -mesh repair of inguinal hernia -laparoscopic repair of inguinal hernia

Over 1000 elegant illustrations by Caspar Henselmann accompany this text, an indispensable reference for all surgical residents and practicing surgeons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chassin's Operative Strategy in Genral Surgery- A Must Read
I know that Zollinger's and Sabiston are the standard reccommended readings. If you have the money to go ahead and get them, but if you are on a budget like most residents the one book you can't pass up is Chassin's. It is clear, current, offers basic tips and explains common pitfalls. The diagrams and pictures are fabulous. You will definately be prepared for any OR case if you review this book the night before.

5-0 out of 5 stars For surgical trainees
Good books on operative surgery are difficult to find. This book offers a much clearer understanding of operative general surgery. The detailed text is aided with helpful illustrations. It describes many of the pitfalls that surgeons encounter in day to day practice. The price may be off-putting but to the serious surgical trainee, they will see this book as an invaluable investment. ... Read more

As a member of the Danish Society for Surgery of the Hand, I have spent a lot of time browsing this text-book which has become the bible of many hand-surgeon world-over. Book Description

The collection of ten absorbing tales by master psychotherapist Irvin D. Yalom uncovers the mysteries, frustrations, pathos, and humor at the heart of the therapeutic encounter.  In recounting his patients' dilemmas, Yalom not only gives us a rare and enthralling glimpse into their personal desires and motivations but also tells us his own story as he struggles to reconcile his all-too human responses with his sensibility as a psychiatrist.  Not since Freud has an author done so much to clarify what goes on between a psychotherapist and a patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the Therapist, Patient, or Humanist
This book should be required reading for anybody either undergoing psychotherapy or providing it. Irvin Yalom uses his experience with ten clients to illustrate how people change in therapy. Sometimes the change comes out of brilliant insights, sometimes it comes from the therapist's mistakes. Either way, Yalom's integrity in relating these vignettes helps the reader understand the process better.

If you're not in therapy, perhaps this book will help you understand yourself and your internal processes a bit better. Which of Yalom's patients do you identify with? Which to you totally reject? Either of those patients, and Yalom's treatment of them, has something to teach you.

If you are in therapy, notice how Yalom treats his patients, how he thinks about them. How does this compare to your relationship with your therapist? Do you experience the same challenges, the same caring, the same dynamic? Or do you just show up and whine for an hour?

As a therapist, I found Yalom's work particularly brave. Who would write a book about their mistakes? Yet, from his mistakes, I find myself learning--and also better enabled to learn from my mistakes. Reading Love's Executioner helped to keep me from sitting on that God-like Throne and remember to be a human being with my clients; a fellow sufferer, an ally in the healing process.

And if the idea of therapy seems not to apply to you, then you may simply find this book a fascinating story about how a thoughtful and insightful man deals with the sorrows, wounds, and needs of other human beings. These stories impart a powerful understanding of human relationships, whether you're involved in therapy or not.

Five stars for candor and courage. Five stars for a sharp writing style that holds attention better than most "case studies," and five stars for choosing stories that speak to the depths of people's hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love's Executioner
This book was written by a man of great courage. He has openly and honestly exposed all of his personal and professional weaknesses. As a therapist myself, it was refreshing to read an honest representation of what actually occurs in therapy rather than a self-serving and white-washed version of what happened. The strength of this book is in Yalom's ability to express the intricacies of the therapeutic process, the stages that each therapeutic relationship can go through, and its impact on both therapist and client. Another strength, is Yalom's willingness to openly expose his own therapeutic failures. I have learnt a great deal from him about what actually works in therapy. I have also re-learnt the value of not inflicting one's own biases on one's own clients. This problem can be solved by either resolving one's own issues, or referring the client to someone else who may better suit the client's needs. Yalom openly confronted what occurs when a therapist persists with a client, when they are unable to create an effective therapeutic relationship. No-one is perfect, not even the great Yalom. In exposing his own weaknesses, Yalom risks being misunderstood or even ridiculed. However, by taking this risk, Yalom offers the reader the opportunity to thoroughly examine the therapeutic process itself, what works and what fails for therapists and clients alike. It was a great read, I couldn't put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars please? what is wrong with you people?
If any of you reader-critic people think you're encountering a therapist or Doctor or friend who sees you without judgement--then you're simply fooling yourselves. Anyone who pretends they've got no judgement of you is selling you something. Even the holiest of humans judge--I'm sure of it. Get over yourselves--we are limited, we are not perfect. Yalom speaks the truth about his countertransference and that is a gift to all who are involved in the therapeutic enterprise. It is when we deny the shadow that we are in real trouble. Fat may not disgust everyone it is true--but this is Yalom's experience, and this is what he gives us unabashedly. Can you not find it within yourselves to allow him his feelings? Unconditional positive regard can only happen with full acknowledgement of all projections good and bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars A word about some of the negative reviews...
It seems that there's more than a bit of transferance occuring with some of the reviewers here. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinions but some of the reviewers here seem to have either missed the point of Dr. Yalom's stories or are simply incapable of seeing past their entrenched prejudices and preconceptions.

Some readers are apparently unable to come to grips with one of the central theses of Yalom's book, which is that the therapist is just as human and prone to error and prejudice as his patients. If anything, Yalom is almost embarrassingly honest about his often extremely negative reactions to many of his patients. He doesn't candy-coat any of it. In this book we get Irvin Yalom, M.D., warts and all, just as he promises in his introduction.

The critics who cannot accept a "human" doctor are symptomatic of the greater societal damand that medical professionals should be (no, MUST be) above all emotion save those of the most magnanimous and saintly variety. We expect doctors to be godlike, above pettiness and messy "unseemly" thoughts and feelings. Bah. Hogwash.

Dr. Yalom's triumph here is the explosion of such myths. He is not St. Yalom, ministering from his pedestal of medical and moral perfection. He is Irvin Yalom the Man, as prone to judgment as any of us. His unflinching self-criticism and honesty -- with his patients, himself, and his readers -- is what makes this such a remarkable book and Yalom such a remarkable therapist.

If you're the sort who feels a psychic need to see doctors as superhuman this book will prove very disturbing to you. Those realistic enough to know this is ridiculous fantasy will be enlightening, entertained, and touched.

1-0 out of 5 stars physician, heal thyself, & look in the mirror too!
i've read dr. yalom's book twice now. i couldn't agree more with the other reviewers who are taken aback by his disgust for his patients. different reviewers admired his "bravery," but i, as a humanist and also someone in the medical profession, think he uses his book almost as anintellectually masturbatory confessional.

i have always been fat and though it is "nice" to know the truth of the contempt that many people hold for fat people, it is difficult to read this coming from a psychotherapist who uses his overweight patient only, it seems, to massage his psyche. i expect more. i expect compassion, empathy, MATURITY, and the ability to accept and even enjoy people's differences. yalom missed the boat here. i wouldn't pay him a dime for analysis. there are so many better, more mature, less projecting, less narcissistic therapists out there. nu, you've been warned! :-) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent First Read
This is an excellent introductory text book in radiology. It contains excellent images and covers the key fundamentals in radiology. It would be ideal for the PGY1 or PGY2 resident to read through to gain familarity in radiology before moving on to the major reference texts. Very readable book that does not overwhelm the junior resident with needless minutia.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental of Diagnostic Radiology
This is the single excellent book for Radiology Residents and General Radiologists. Seperate sections on US and NM are the best parts of this book. CT Scan and MRI are dispersed with the General Radiology. If the authors create seperate sections of CT and MRI like US and NM in the next edition, the book will become the only perfect book in General Radiology. This book contains treasure of knowledge for the Radiology residents and racticing General Radiologists.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise but not enough for residency.
Not a bad overview of most subjects, but some areas are lacking. The bone trauma subsection is particularly scant, excluding all of the fracture grading schemes. Additionally, while somewhat dedicated to differential generating, you don't really get a feel for what is actually common.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The new version has an ultrasound section which is more extensive than the first edition. The book is sound and an excellent review. It is certainly the new review book as opposed to other texts. It is good for residents and practicing radiologists. I am finished with residency and fellowship and it is a handy reference book! (2nd edition)

5-0 out of 5 stars best radiologic "all in one"-book ever written

A revolutionary approach to child protection work. This book focuses on the question, "How can child protection professionals actually build partnerships with parents where there is suspected or substantiated child abuse or neglect?" It brings the solution-oriented model to child protection work, expanding the investigation of risk to encompass signs of safety that can be built upon to stabilize and strengthen the child's and family's situation. For child protection workers, who are involved with vulnerable, at-risk children in volatile situations, it provides practical, hands-on strategies for building a partnership with parents, which may, in the long run, prevent abuse and family dissolution. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A mass-marketed version of an already-existing technology
Yamuna Zake invented this technology over a decade ago; her company Yamuna Body Rolling sells a line of balls for body rolling. Amazon sells the Yamuna book. Ball Dynamics has sold a line of similar balls for many years. In my area, local stores sell these balls.

Both of these systems have 3 balls of varying diameter; they did that because that's what they found works! The systems also include a pump to allow for getting a precise pressure in the balls. I cannot imagine how such a system would work without having a pump to alter the pressure.

Both the Yamuna and BDI balls are much more thick-skinned than the "miracle" ball. This is crucial for providing padding for the body when rolling. Using a thin-skinned ball is like doing Pilates matwork with no mat!

Finally, I strongly recommend getting hands-on instruction to start with any kind of technology like this. This kind of deep-muscle work is challenging technology; 'tis quite useful to get experienced help while learning it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little Balls- You Will Be Convinced Once You've Tried!
When I first saw this set of 2 small, blue-green balls, I really wondered whether they were any good. Decided to take a chance, and I am sure glad I did. Propped myself over these 2 semi-inflated balls on the floor and it was sheer bliss as my own body weight sank upon them.

The set consist of 2 approximately 4 inch (11 cm) diameter therapy balls (re-inflatable) and a pocket-sized 296 page insruction book packed in a transparent casing. The balls are approx. a half-inch (1 cm) thick each, and are not as thin-skinned as might be imagined. The book says that the balls are built tough, and are good for up to 300 pounds, and I believe the claim is sustainable.

In my opinion, these 2 little balls are fantastic value for money for what they are capable of, and you would be surprised how nice it feels once you prop your tired body over them at the end of a long day. Although these are therapy balls, you may also want to use them as I frequently do - a simple and 'fun' way of giving your body a much needed self-massage, merely by placing them at strategic locations beneath your body and resting over them.

By the way, I am not one of Ms. Elaine Petrone's student, since I am writing from half a world away. But, I am definitely her fan now after being convinced by these 2 little 'Miracle' balls! Go www.elainepetrone.com for more info.

My advice: considering their low price, get them while they are available, as these little balls are 'hot' - they were all sold out on Amazon.com until recently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye on the prize!
I have just begun these miracle ball excercizes and i see an improvment after only 1 week with being able to breathe better. I still have soreness in my back, but i refuse to quit. This book explains everything to a "t" and is easy to follow and the pictures are extremely detailed and helpful! I have recommended this set to everyone i know as a means of stress relief and muscle toning and spinal elongation. It all just makes so much sense! Letting gravity do the work and breathing! How EZ is that?
Also, my one year old loves to chase the little balls around the living room and loves having Momma at his level when i lay on the floor as he plays...just a cute added bonus!!
Thank you ELaine! I won't give up..i have my eye on the prize..less pain..less stress!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elaine Petrone is my teacher
Elaine Petrone is my teacher. I had the privilege of taking classes with her over the course of many years. If you can't take personal classes with her, then her book is the next best thing. Her book and her work derive from her personal centeredness and calm. Whatever the current state of your body and mind, following Elaine's work will make you feel and look better. Elaine synthesizes work from many traditions and teachers and creates gentle physical exercise that stretches and realigns the body. Far better than therapy, buy the book and then follow Elaine's method. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A standard text
If you practice in the behavioral sciences, this book should be on your shelf. Features updated information on the diagnosis and treatment of all the DSM diagnoses as well as interesting historical information. Takes what's in the DSM and expands on it at some length, including psychotherapeutic and pharmacological interventions. Written with a surprisingly even hand towards all interventions, I have found it more useful than the DSM most of the time, especially in guiding treatment decisions. My only complaint is their decision to drop material on some of the older medications. Still, a terrific resource for the working pracitioner!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gold Standard in Psychiatry
This is a superb book for both the psychiatric and mental health prfessional reader and for the general public. It is well-written, thoroughly referenced and totally up-to-date. With the revolution in drug treament the authors provide a comprehensive survey of all drugs used in psychiatry. They also cover the psychodynamic concepts of Freud, Jung, Erikson and other theorists. This book is a must for anyone interested in this field.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent work but there is another one better
I find this a concise and useful summary of the current state of development of Psychiarty.

However personally I prefer the Shorter Oxford Textbook of Psychiarty a little bit more.

4-0 out of 5 stars LOTS of information...perhaps a bit too detailed
Professionals and the truely interested will appreciate this book for its extensivly packed-full-of-information chapters. Current DSM criteria and DSM case studies are illustrated throughout. Bulleted outlines, black and white pictures, and colored boxes help break up the endless text. Downfalls: The pages are thin, and the print is smaller than most texts, and the book is very heavy and not one most would chose to tote around. It is detailed with both Pscyh 101 and Ph.D level information that is great for advanced students who REALLY want to learn all there is to know. However, for those just trying to get through a psychopathology course, the book is a bit too extensive and the long chapters are a bit overwhelming Exams off this book need to be created with care and understanding as so much information is contained in the chapters that it is difficult for students to distinquish between whats important for an exam and what is more information than you really need to know at that point. Student have trouble remembering the tiny details and oftentimes miss information that more advanced professionals have already learned and take for granted. Give a study guide to reduce exam anxiety and give multiple exams. Okay text book but not for courses only giving midterm and final exams. You really weekly exams to keep students on track and not overwhelmed. EXCELLENT resouce book personal growth or research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive
This a very comprehensive textbook (even though it says synopsis) of psychiatry. I have heard it is great preparation for the psych boards. However, it is quite dry and at times dense and difficult to read. A great book but I wish it was easier to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best so Far!
As a future EMT-B student I wanted to buy some books prior to my course beginning. I bought Mosby's, Aehlert's, and Brady's books. I finally got to this one (being the last I was to read), and have to say this is the best Ive seen so far. With clear concise text, and abundance of knowledge, real life situations, and amazing pictures (which Aehlert's has almost none of), I must say that this book is not only the most informative, but is also the most user friendly. It has a great index, glossary, and the anatomy pictures are cut outs of REAL humans. I mean it just doesn't get any better than this. I just found out a few days ago this is the book my instructor is going to use, and for a good reason!

4-0 out of 5 stars A decent book, but a little confusing in parts.
I am an EMT-B instructor in West Virginia and have used this edition to teach my classes. I have found it to be a great improvement over previous editions. The text is easy to read, comprehensive and all-in-all an excellent text on EMT-B. My only gripe with the book is that it makes prehospital patient assessment somewhat confusing for new students. The book breaks patient assessment up into several chapters, giving the reader the impression that assessment is both difficult and complicated. This lack of single-chapter continuity coupled with the trepidation many new students bring to this module creates the impression that patient assessment is a disjointed, randomized activity. I have to tell my students that for patient assessment, these chapters are a good reference, but that I will tell them just how easy assessment is; TAKE NOTES!

If Brady would spend a little more time examining this module, I feel as though they can make it a little less imposing and a little more readable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Workbook
I used this workbook in conjuction with the Emergency Care Book, to prepare for the state registry EMT-B test, and the NREMT-B test. This is a MUST have if you are using the Emergency Care Book. Questions are nearly identical in wording and phrasing to the NREMT-B exam, and the inclusion of practice homework problems add even more preparation oppertunities. DO NOT BUY THE EMERGENCY CARE BOOK, WITHOUT THIS WORKBOOK!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, VERY good...
I am a current EMT-B student and currently use this book as text. The book is indeed easy to read, and has a lot of features to help a student prepare for that dreadful exam. I reccomend buying the workbook as well, to really solidify the knowledge gained by reading. In my class the tests are easy in comparison to the questions in the workbook, this is why I recommend buying the workbook. Also, using all of the features incorporated in this book will, with out any doubt, prepare you for the test. The assessment chapters are mangled as the instructor's review says, but there is a great graphic in the front of the book and being how assessment is SO VITAL, one should visualize it on their own and practice till its like tieing a shoe. All in all a quality well thought out book, with tons of features.

5-0 out of 5 stars You think they are all the same....
But they aren't. This was my required reading. I doubled up and purchased two others just in case. I found that I liked this one the best and just wasted my money on the other two. This book is very well organized and since all of the content to review for the NREMT is the same, that's what it is all about.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent intro for readers with some math background
This book is a welcome introduction for readers who are comfortable with basic differential equations and vector calculus. As an applied mathematician interested in learning the fundamentals of MRI, I had grown quite frustrated with the simplified literature on one hand ("MRI for technologists", "MRI for medical people", "MRI for dummies"...) and the professional literature on the other, which is directed at people already immersed in the study of MR technology. In contrast, this book is an excellent introduction to the subject for applied mathematicians (though this may not have been the intended audience), as it makes no assumptions regarding reader's science background and thus explains thoroughly all relevant E+M, physics and signal processing. But most importantly, it does so without cutting mathematical corners. This results in a far more lucid and logical exposition than books which try to protect the reader for his/her own good. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Still excellent at 3 years old...
Even though this book was published in 2001, it is still an irreplaceable source of info in my lab. The pictures and tables are wonderful. The only drawback is that is lacks info on a few cell lines (THP1, for example).

5-0 out of 5 stars A SUPERB Manual of Basic Cell CultureTechnique
I purchased this book a year ago to use in a clinical virology laboratory. Although many of the recipes used in my field are essentially set, this book allowed for broad learning in the skill of cell culture. I learned many principles of cell culture that were poorly explained or not mentioned in clinical literature and books.

This book is well laid out, the chapters well written, and the information is comprehensive. Subjects include (besides the usual stuff of cell culture) chapters covering equipment materials, safety, contamination, scale up, a reagent appendix, and supplier's listing.

This book is an excellent choice for the serious beginner. The expert will certainly find this book of value because even experts are only expert at what they do routinely and there is so much to know. This would be a great training source for research or clinical laboratories who perform cell culture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the people doing the cell related work
This book gives us comprehesive review on new techniques in cell cultures. It is a good guidance to the people who is doing the cell-based techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference book
This book is a superb reference book. It is useful for a beginning or an experienced tissue culture practitioner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most important book in my library.
Every certified athletic trainer, primary care physician, coach, or anyone else who has contact with the injured athlete should own this book. I use this text every day. It is the most useful resource in my professional library. This book is so easy to understand it makes an excellent text for parents of active young people. Dr. Rouzier's book is a "home run".

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Office Should Have This Book!
Dr. Rouzier's book is exactly what I had been trying to find.My patients always used to ask, "Can you write that down for me?" after I finished explaining their condition and assigned home exercises.Trying to create my own handouts had been on my "To Do" list for years.I have looked at other products but they were either too expensive (most of which were large computer software programs) and or more than I wanted or needed in my practice. This book is perfect--and Dr. Rouzier has done all the work for you."The Sports Medicine Patient Advisor" is well written, has an easy-to-use layout, includes great graphics and information, and the best thing--encourages making copies of the handouts to give to your patients.I use it every day in my Chiropractic practice. It also saves me time because I can now briefly review my diagnosis with a patient and then just give them the handout--and the patients love them too. This book will pay for itself with your first patient. It is also a great reference for the non-doctor athlete to have on their own shelf. You will love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Active Family? You Need this Book!
My husband and son are mountain bike maniacs.I keep this book in the kitchen! It has been a very useful resource for diagnosing and treating all sorts of aches and pains associated not only with sports activities, but just everyday living. The Patient Advisor is broken down by body parts and written in plain English. The illustrations are very clear and straightforward.I've learned a lot of biology from reading this book. It's been a worthwhile investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sports Medicine Advisor: A Must for Nurse Practitioners
I have found Sports Medicine Advisor extremely helpful in my practice as an NP. My peers consult it regularly. It really helps patients understand their injuries and it gives them an important role in their own recovery. They can take some control over their rehabilitation, have a better understanding of what happened to them, and how to prevent recurrence of their injuries.

As an NP educator, I have recommended the book to my students for the past four years in two of my courses. It is on my bibliography and I endorse it wholeheartedly. It is a unique, easily understood text for both the beginner and the more expert.

Students are eager for information around orthopedic and sports injuries and this text provides them with a practical, common sense approach to evaluation and management of orthopedic injuries. Students don't always buy books that are recommended, but they have embraced this book as essential to their learning and a valuable resource for their clinical practice. They also see that their preceptors in clinical practice use the book very frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Sports Medicine
This is a great book for a variety of reasons. The patient handouts are clear, concise, and well illustrated. It is a must for any primary care physician who has an active interest in sports medicine.
