Book Description

For kindergartners and first graders who need extra work on their early literacy skills, this proven plan for teaching phonemic awareness and letter-sound correspondence is a teacher's best friend. Expert researchers created this developmentally sequenced, 11-week program in order to give students repeated opportunities to practice and enhance their beginning reading and spelling abilities. Each of the 44, 15 to 20 minute lessons features a "say-it-and-move-it" activity, a letter name and sound instruction exercise, and phonological awareness practice.

Perfect for small groups or individual instruction, this program is easy for teachers to use and understand because detailed scripted instructions and reproducible materials - such as picture cards, letter cards, and games - are provided. And teachers have the flexibility to shorten or extend the amount of time it takes for a student to complete the program. With this all-in-one resource, educators will have everything they need to get their students off to a great start in reading. ... Read more

Book Description

Medicolegal investigation of death is the most crucial and significant function of the medical examiner within the criminal justice system. The medical examiner is primarily concerned with violent, sudden, unexpected, and suspicious deaths and is responsible for determining the cause and manner of death, identifying the deceased, determining the approximate time of death and injury, collecting evidence from the body, issuing the death certificate, and documenting these events through an official autopsy report. The basis of the medicolegal investigation is forensic pathology.Written for both medical and investigative professionals, Forensic Pathology, Second Edition presents an overview of medicolegal investigative systems. Completely updated, the book examines investigative techniques and procedures that lead to obtaining accurate conclusions of death by homicide, accident, or suicide. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sourcebook for readers
This book, originally loaned to me by a police professional, is an excellent resource for a variety of readers who are involved with criminal investigations but don't really have all the tools and training of a full-time medical examiner. In my case, as a crime author, the text was an invaluable reference, putting some highly technical material into easily digested context. The collection of photographs, while occasionally grisly, provides an excellent visual reference. Recommended for laymen of all kinds who need a good reference work on forensic pathology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Textbook Style Book
This book didn't beat around the bush at all. It took you right into the morbid details of death. Every subject I can think of regarding death was explained in this book. The pictures were mostly black and white but the detail in them was still enough to stir my stomach.

This book went from babies to burns, from rapes to stabbings, from gunshots to suffocation. It told you how things were done and why evidence was placed the way that it was.

This book was in textbook form and I believe that it is actually used for students to learn with. In saying that, you can not only learn with this book but you can also keep yourself interested with having some death questions answered.

Overall, a wonderful book for someone looking to get into the forensic field, or for someone just interested in death and how some things happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference Book
One cannot help comparing this book with "Spitz and Fisher's Medicolegal Investigation of Death", which is in the same price range.

This book is smaller and thinner, but it covers more exotic cases in the field, such as crucifixion and an asphyxiation by python. It also contains more data from academic research.

While "Spitz and Fisher" is generally considered the required textbook for students and the ultimate authority in courtrooms, this one by Messrs. Di Maio (father and son) should be the required reference book for students in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
This reference book covers developmental, clinical, educational, family, and intervention issues of concern to teachers working with children with disabilities. Written by doctors, it thoroughly explores issues than impact child development starting from conception through adulthood. Factors that can cause disabilities, current methods of treatment, commonly used medications, and guidelines for intervention are addressed.

This comprehensive reference book will be invaluable tool to access when teaching children with disabilities and parents. Appendixes provide a through list of resources, and glossary of terms so non-experts, like myself, can avoid getting lost in a morass of acronyms. Brookes Publishing provides a companion website which I expect to consult for the most current information and up-to-the-minute research.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Introductory Book
Batshaw's Children with Disabilities is a "must have" book for anyone who works with children with disabilities...almost. Written by doctors for those in the medical professional most of the recommended interventions come from a decidedly medical model. It is, on the other hand, fairly comprehensive with sections dealing with genetics, development, developmental disabilities, and interventions with the bulk of the book dealing with specific disabilities from the obscure (Fragile X Syndrome) to the more common (AD/HD). I have not found Appendix A or B particularly useful (Glossary and Syndromes of Inborn Errors of Metabolism) but turn to Appendix C and D frequently (Commonly Used Medication and Resources for Children with Disabilities) Finally, while the book offers a nice mix of theory and application, I would like to see (maybe in a 5th Edition?) the incorporation of some of the so-called "new brain research." Nevertheless, I still turn to this book several times each month. ... Read more

Book Description

Up-to-date, challenging, and provocative, this best-selling book, the acknowledged standard in the field, is a practical manual for dealing with the ethical issues that all professionals confront at the various stages in their development. The authors engage readers in a thoughtful, caring dialogue about crucial matters in the helping professions, such as: How do the therapist's values and life experiences affect the therapeutic process? *What are the rights and responsibilities of client and helper? How can helping professionals determine their own level of competence? * How can therapists provide quality services for culturally diverse populations?* What are some major ethical issues facing practitioners in marital and family therapy? in group work? in community agencies? in private practice? Emphasizing that ethical decision making is an ongoing process with no easy answers, the book offers a paradigm for decision-making and provides readers with the knowledge and understanding they need to effectively think through issues. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Ethics Text on the Market to Date
As a Counselor Educator and Counseling Psychologist, I feel that "Issues and Ethics In the Helping Professions" is one of the most nicely organized and well-written texts on counseling ethics ever written. I cannot think of another text I would choose over it to teach ethics to developing counselors. This text serves as an excellent source for the overview of ethical issues in counseling and related fields, as well as a guide to further reading. Corey, Corey, and Callanan expect readers to become involved in learning to deal with ethical and professional issues most directly influenced by the actual practice of counseling. The authors produce numerous useful examples for thought and discussion as well as well designed activities for the classroom setting. Even an instructor selects another text for her or his ethics course, the student should definitely consider purchasing this text as an ethics resource. This edition has also put more emphasis on the learning needs of School Counselors than past editions, although I hope to see it develop in this arena in the 6th edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required or not, read this book!
This book was required in my graduate psychology ethics course, and I found it to be extremely helpful. Covers such topics as confidentiality, multiple relationships, diversity issues, and personal values as they relate to the counseling profession. Extremely helpful were the pre-chapter self-inventories for each topic, which give you a chance to think about what is written after them from your own frame of reference. This book dealt with issues that I had never even considered before, and I consider myself to be fairly well-educated in the subject of counseling psychology. I recommend it to anyone who is in a graduate program, to undergraduates who plan to enter the field, and to anyone currently practicing who was sent out to work with little or no formal ethics training. ... Healthy, vibrant skin depends more on what you put in your cheeks than what you rub on them, says dermatologist Nicholas Perricone. In The Perricone Prescription, fresh salmon tops the list of must-eat foods for total body rejuvenation. In fact, it is the star of Perricone's "Three-Day Nutritional Face-Lift," a convincing trial run for those who are a bit hedgy about committing to his 28-day diet and his supplement, skin care, and exercise regimen.

Perricone's clear explanation about the adverse effects of inflammatory foods persuasively argues for shunning destructive, low-fat favorites (including watermelon, carrots, and bagels) and "culinary horrors" like pizza, pasta, and beef. Better to eat anti-inflammatory choices (those with a glycemic index of 50 or less) like salmon, halibut, and trout. While the book's mega list of recommended supplements is a bit hard to swallow (literally and figuratively), the supportive information Perricone supplies about each is certainly helpful.

Another detailed grocery list--this time for topical anti-inflammatories--addresses skin care, and his wrinkle-free fitness plan promotes flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. Finally, a handful of savory recipes offers respite to those who only know how to broil. So, despite all the salmon (and the angry kids whose parents have purged their high-glycemic kitchens), Perricone's prescription doesn't sound fishy at all. --Liane Emory Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perricone Prescription
Perricone (The Wrinkle Cure), a professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School, believes that relatively simple changes in eating can effect dramatic changes in physical appearance and well-being. He has created a month-long program broken up into daily menus as well as a more restrictive three-day regimen designed to produce immediate results. Perricone's guiding principle, which he explains in some depth, is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level, which, he believes, causes the skin to age and is also linked to degenerative disease. Perricone suggests that protein and some fat is essential for everyone. He is particularly keen on the benefits of fish. Certain foods high in carbohydrates cereals, breads, bananas are taboo in this plan because of their high glycemic index; they cause a spike in blood sugar and prompt the body's insulin response, which stores rather than burns fat and causes inflammation. Perricone also recommends an exercise regimen, and nearly a third of the book is devoted to a discussion of antioxidants, vitamin supplements and creams. Some may question his nutritional theories, and others may find the diet difficult to stick to, with its almost total restriction of starchy foods. Still, Perricone is a proponent of Barry Sears's The Zone, and readers who have followed that book and Perricone's own bestselling earlier volume will probably appreciate this one. (Aug.) Forecast: Given the author's track record with his previous book, there's little doubt that this one will hit the lists especially with the help of media attention and the summer publication, when many people are suffering from the effects of too much sun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fringe Benefits!
While the focus of The Perricone Prescription is anti-aging, I derived a fringe benefit from it...weight loss! I tend to believe that this result was produced not only by the physiological regimen, but by a psychological effect. Most "weight loss" books place all their emphasis on the desired goal, i.e., weight loss. We try too hard and are at times discouraged when we don't achieve the desired results. With The Perricone Prescription, the focus is shifted to improving your skin, so the pressure to lose weight is not there. Not only has my skin improved, I've lost weight and have kept it off.

Not only does this book deliver sound nutritional advice, it is effective on many levels. I have had a lifelong battle with weight and nothing has worked. This book was an epiphany for me because it details the science of how our bodies (skin included) react to foods and supplements. I must admit that the advice was easy for me to follow since I love fish, particularly salmon, and since I have a Mediterranean heritage, my diet has always included olives, olive oil, and seafood. Getting rid of the high glycemic foods, though, permitted me to turn the corner. NO ONE ever guesses my correct age...everyone thinks I'm at least 10 years younger than I am.

I highly recommend this book...sound medical advice from a renowned dermatologist. How can you go wrong?

3-0 out of 5 stars Get a healthy glow in 3 days.
This book is pretty much about eating clean, low glycemic carbs and healthy fats. Too many of the wrong foods (bad carbs, salt, sugar) cause inflammation (insulin spike) and cause tissues to become irritated (hold water, puffiness). After following the Three-Day Nutritional Face Lift Menu(without the supplements) my face isn't puffy when I wake, my eyes aren't bloodshot and my skin is J.Lo luminious.

LOTS of supplements are prescribed which to "make it easy for you..." he sells overpriced supplements on his website at the hefty price tag of $195 for 45 days.

This is a good diet to follow if you are do Body-for-LIFE, South Beach or Atkins. I can't argue that its a bad plan. The recipes are very simple, clean and delicious. Can get expensive, but if you live near a Trader Joe's you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

The program can easily be summed up below -- he posts this on his website. Or try the eDiets.com version which is very simple to follow.

The Three-Day Menu
You will be eating close to the same thing each day. Remember to always eat your protein first. Though this diet has some variety, a restricted diet is often easier to handle since you are not confronted by too many choices.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is Farmed Salmon Safe to eat?
The problem with this diet is that Dr. Perricone recommends you eat only wild salmon. I had to ask myself right away what's wrong with eating farmed salmon and why won't Dr. Perricone recommend eating it as an alternative? With all the wild salmon you're supposed to eat, this diet gets very cost prohibitive very fast.

If consumers knew what was in farmed salmon they might think twice about eating it more than once a month. Recent studies show that farmed salmon bought at markets on the East and West coasts were found to be contaminated with PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, at an average level far higher than any other protein source, including other seafood. PCBs are insidious and have been identified as probable human carcinogens.

This diet works as long as you can afford to eat wild salmon numerous times a week. The consumer friendly alternative is the L.A. Shape Diet - it even recommends some of the same supplements. I have had great results by combining the L.A. shape diet with Perricone's recommended supplements and lotions. Just get smart and find the discount versions of Perricone's brands to get the benefit of great skin without dropping a lot of cash.

5-0 out of 5 stars The doctorsecret is now out.
Hi fellow antiWrinkle and antiagers!
I wrote this before on a different book review. The book is really a good menu or instruction set. It is written well and very enlightning. I'm sure it was made to promote his products but I found several websites that sell the stuff at a better price. doctorsecret.com or even ebay. The process is the best one written so far. I often hear I look 10-15 years younger. At this rate I'll be 16 again soon. Dr Perricone is handsome and intelligent, that helps in the selling. The Glycolic acid treatment proceedure or Serum CEster described are the best.
Thanks and good luck. ... Read more

Book Description

Michael Chorost became a cyborg on October 1, 2001, the day his new ear was booted up. Born hard of hearing in 1964, he went completely deaf in his thirties. Rather than live in silence, he chose to have a computer surgically embedded in his skull to artificially restore his hearing.

This is the story of Chorost's journey -- from deafness to hearing, from human to cyborg -- and how it transformed him. The melding of silicon and flesh has long been the stuff of science fiction. But as Chorost reveals in this witty, poignant, and illuminating memoir, fantasy is now giving way to reality.

Chorost found his new body mystifyingly mechanical: kitchen magnets stuck to his head, and he could plug himself directly into a CD player. His hearing was routinely upgraded with new software. All this forced him to confront complex questions about humans in the machine age: When the senses become programmable, can we trust what they tell us about the world? Will cochlear implants destroy the signing deaf community? And above all, are cyborgs still human?

A brilliant dispatch from the technological frontier, Rebuilt is also an ode to sound. Whether Chorost is adjusting his software in a desperate attempt to make the world sound "right" again, exploring the neurobiology of the ear, or reflecting on the simple pleasure of his mother's voice, he invites us to think about what we hear -- and how we experience the world -- in an altogether new way.

Brimming with insight and written with dry, self-deprecating humor, this quirky coming-of-age story unveils, in a way no other book has, the magnificent possibilities of a new technological era.

5-0 out of 5 stars what it means to be human
I got home at 7:30pm frantic because my flight to Singapore was to
depart at 6am, and found my preordered copy of "Rebuilt" from Amazon
on the stoop.I hadn't packed and still had tons of email to go, on
top of a couple of administrative emergencies.I was hoping to get
to bed by 10pm.But instead, I stayed up until 1:30am reading
Rebuilt, left in the morning with god-knows-what-all in my luggage,
and finished it on the plane having not slept in transit at all.
This book is seriously good. It's the first book that's ever made
anything related to postmodern literary theory interesting to me.I
laughed out loud at least a half dozen times.

Yes, the book is by someone who's literally experienced one of the
first mindmelds with a computer. Yes, the book has to do with
deafness. Yes, the book looks at literature, and philosophy. But it's
really one man's story and something that touches every one of us,
which is what it means to be human--alone, together, and with
our technologies. What a masterpiece.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Amazingly Personal Look At Health and Technology
I was skeptical at first when I was given this book but once I started the book I was amazed. I went in thinking what's the big deal about getting a cochlear implant and left trying to figure out "what is reality". Chorost does a great job infusing the book with his wit. He does seem to be uniquely qualified to write about this topic (with his background in technology). The book shines when he writes about his personal experiences. Two Thumbs Up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everybody should read this book
This book isn't perfect. If I was Chorost's editor, I'd have told him to cut a few things & beef up other parts (and particularly told him "Less about the girls, more about the code"!Chorost seems to have underrated the interesting-ness of his insights as a guy who knows about software and overrated the interest of online dating; cf. "Genes, Girls and Gamow," a similar exercise...).But that said, this is one of the most striking and memorable books I've read for ages.Chorost is the perfect person to write this book, and his insights into the wonders & difficulties of the cochlear implant should be required reading for EVERYBODY who has an interest in biotechnology, language, education, neurology, etc.A real must-read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding textbook, gain something new everytime I read it
Must have for anyone interested in MSK, worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Radiology residents needed a book like this.
If you like the Requisites series of texts, this book is for you. Let's face it, the average radiology resident can't wade through Stoller or Berquist and expect to remember much. This book takes musculoskeletal MR and breaks it down into a Requisites-format book of manageable length. Boxes indicating "key points" abound, and the pictures are of high quality. The length is appropriate for an introductory MSK MR rotation.

On the minus side, the book is definitely not an exhaustive reference text. The knee chapter is relatively short, especially given the huge volumes of knee MRs radiologists are seeing. Also, the authors are a bit too opinionated about which sequences to use in some chapters - a more evidence-based and less anecdotal approach to tailoring exams would have been more useful.

Overall, highly recommended for radiology residents who are encountering MSK MR for the first time.

4-0 out of 5 stars The missing link
This is a very good text especially for the cost.

True to the authors intentions, the text presents practical aspects of interpreting musculoskeletal magnetic resonance studies. The text is perfectly suited to radiology residents, fellows and radiologists interpreting routine mri's. Essential technical information including suggestions for protocols are provided as well as an organized approach to interpretation.

I liked the sequence of normal descriptions immediately followed by associated pathology. There were sufficient images of excellent quality. Illustrations and diagrams are well thought out and "boxes" with core information are also present for those of us who just want the essential list! Definitely an easily read text. One should realize that this, however, is not a reference text! A musculoskeletal radiologist or individual with special interest in this area will likely find this too superficial. But the authors intentions are not to replace Resnick or Stoller's excellent reference texts.

Bottom line is I definitely recommend it for the price because it fills the gap between an intro book and the heavy duty texts just as it intends to...it is the missing link. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must read BEFORE your child gets vaccinated...invaluable!
This book encourages parents "...to be equal partners with doctors in deciding which vaccines their children should get and when they should get them." The way this book achieves this goal is by offering important medical information in easy to understand terms. "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You..." provides detailed info on the various vaccines currently required/suggested by state and federal governments; reviewing indepth the history of the diseases and related vaccines, ingredients used to make and preserve the vaccines, background studies and recent research available on a variety of the vaccines and also a risk/benefit analysis per vaccination. What this book offers (that your doctor's office may not) is a look at both sides of the vaccination issue and gives YOU a well-rounded resource package so you can best decide when/what vaccines to give your child. Factors that can influence your decision include any known allergies, reactions to previous vaccinations, family history of autoimmune diseases and more. Also a help to parents is a list of precautions parents can take when their children get vaccinated and also a recommended schedule (that differs from the government's) for childhood vaccinations. This alternative vaccination timeline allows you to operate within the guidelines of the government mandate that all children receive a certain number of shots prior to entering school, but attempts to spread out the vaccinations for minimum exposure to risk and negative side effects. Did you know many vaccines used today include ingredients such as mercury, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol (a main ingredient in antifreeze) and more? Would you consume those poisons? Of course not, but vaccine manufacturers (and the CDC and FDA) seem to think it's okay for our kids to receive these poisons ad nauseam. Fortunately, each of today's required vaccinations come with a mercury-free alternative, but many doctors are still using those with mercury and you must request the safer alternative. Research and vaccination injury reporting systems indicate possible and/or obvious links to multiple adverse effects including irreparable diseases and death, but many doctors, educators and government institutions refuse to consider those possibilities, as it may endanger the successful mass-vaccination programs currently employed in this country. Included in this book is a discussion of the possible exemptions available to parents, which may include religious, medical or philosophical, depending upon the state in which you live. If you're not willing to trust this author's approach, there's a list of multiple resources at the end of the book allowing you to do your own research and form your own further educated opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! A comprehensive plan to tackle vaccination concerns
Dr. Stephanie Cave does an outstanding job explaining the ins and outs of the vaccine controversy. As a new parent, I never realized the importance of researching the effects of vaccines until my child suffered a reaction. Every new parent should study this book. The choice to vaccinate your child should be a personal one and should be made only when the parent has thoroughly educated themselves on the subject. Dr. Cave makes that process easier with simple explanations for a complicated medical issue. She also provides a proactive plan for a safer vaccination protocol to guide parents on the best way possible to protect their children from both the diseases the vaccines may prevent and the side effects they may cause. This information has been needed for a long time! Thanks Dr. Cave.

5-0 out of 5 stars Balanced & well researched
I have been reading much research on immunizations. Most authors sway one direction or the other. Stephanie Cave doesn't promote nor dissuade the reader from the decision. She merely lays out the pros & cons. If you choose not to she tells you how to obtain an exemption in your state. Most importantly she provides detailed information, for those wanting to vaccinate,on how to administer them while reducing risks. This is the first book that I have seen providing a "safe" vaccination schedule. The schedule does not follow the CDC's recommendations but, gets the job done.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book good start but not an end
This is a good book for parents who want simple facts that are easy to understand. It is a good start to researching the pro's and con's of vaccinations but should not be the end. The book has many good facts, and some opinions. She covers almost all subjects of concern but not all thoroughly. I would definitely recommend this book as a starting place. If you want a book of scientific facts, studies and medical information then you probably want Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective? By Neil Z. Miller. His book is full of scientific facts on BOTH sides, with point and counter point information referencing medical journals, scientific studies and other documented facts. If you choose to read a few books on the subject then be sure to pick up What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations. by Stephanie Cave, but if you only read one get Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective? By Neil Z. Miller.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biased opinion, only one side of the story
The author presents their opinions on vaccinations, then discusses a few studies to support only their opinion. Very one-sided and biased. This book came recommended, but left me very disappointed. Read some of the other good books on this topic by Neustaedter or Miller to get the rest of the story. ... Read more

Book Description

A groundbreaking yet simple set of exercises that will flatten the dreaded "mummy tummy"-regardless of a woman's age or when she had a baby.

Pregnancy naturally separates a mother's outermost abdominal muscles to make room for her growing uterus. Called a diastasis, this separation doesn't fully close up in 98 percent of new moms. The larger the diastasis, the weaker the muscles and the greater chance for mom to develop back problems down the road. Of perhaps greater concern for moms, new and veteran alike, the larger the diastasis, the bigger the belly that just won't seem to go away after baby's delivery!

Lose Your Mummy Tummy introduces the Tupler Technique, a set of deceptively simple abdominal and breathing exercises that decrease the diastasis and result in a firmer, flatter, and stronger belly. Like Kegels-those all-important and privately-practiced pregnancy exercises-the Tupler Technique can be practiced almost anywhere and at anytime. Including illustrations for a 15 or a 30-minute at-home exercise routine, Lose Your Mummy Tummy ensures:

A tighter, flatter stomach

A smaller waistline

A reduction or elimination of back pain

The ability to safely lift your baby and heavy objects

More energy

Better posture

The perfect preparation for your next pregnancy

5-0 out of 5 stars informative and actually somewhat fun
I found this book to provide excellent supplemental info to the "DSM-IV-TR" itself. Written case studies, though no substitute for living, breathing subjects, actually provide a good deal of help in learning to apply the diagnoses in the "DSM-IV-TR". Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn how to properly apply these diagnoses or learn more about psychiatry in general. I found it actually kind of fun. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm OK, you're OK, this book is great!
Well, never thought I would recommend a book like this one, but there has never BEEN a book quite like it. Recall once seeing a renowned Rorschacer examine vignettes like this manual does, and it was great. We enjoyed it, and learned from it.

My recent books read include "Exploration & Empire" by Goetzmann, a history of topography, so you know I enoy plain stuff.

Many of the sympton analyses in this book surprised me, but after careful thought, realized they were beneficial.

Was especially interested in "borderline" type stuff and the OCD sections which showed how OCD can be on both axis I and II.

This book taught me once again that while we all have personality "traits" only the mentally have a DSM number assigned to our excesses.

Was especially inspired by parts about "organic" dysfunctions, so you know it was inspirational. Have a friend with OPD (310.10 explosice type) and became more sensitive to the difficulty adjusting when you are not maladaptive to begin with.

Love to complain, but can't find anything to fault this book. Buy it, read it and if you don't have a place for it in your library, pass it on.

5-0 out of 5 stars The DSM IV-TR in Action!
The Case Book was an optional selection for a psychopathology course I am currently enrolled in. I am glad I spent the money to get it because to a novice like myself, the vignettes are very helpful in understanding the arcane world of DSM IV-TR diagnosis.

This book is truly a "learning companion." Concepts and terminology are illustrated by real-life clinical situations, which can be enormously helpful for clinician and student alike to see how the DSM IV-TR plays out in the real world.

The New England Journal of Medicine said that this book is "educational and fun to read," and I would have to agree on both counts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Review for USMLE STEP-3
If I could rate this book higher, I would. Although written for the Family Practice Boards it was an excellent review for USMLE STEP-3. All the areas that are presented appear on the USMLE exam. Of course one will have to suppliment this book with other sources, but not much. It was particularly helpful with the accompanying questions. It seems like alot of pages to read, but the style makes it fast reading, and consequently comprehension. If you have limited time, funds, even medical knowledge--this is the one book to purchase

3-0 out of 5 stars Swanson's Family Practice Review
Overall the book has a great format. It covers topics well and it is interesting to read -- unlike many others. It addresses why the right answers are right and the wrong answers are wrong for the multiple choice questions. Some books only address the right answers. CAUTION: there are quite a few errors and it is not up to date on many topics. Hormone replacement therapy does not protect from heart disease. Many references are from the late 80s, some from mid to late 90s and occasionally 2000 or later. If the reader has been keeping up with the recent changes in the medical field these errors will be obvious. I still like this book because it is easier and more fun to read than others. If you need this for more than just review and plan to use this to learn family practice -- get a different book. Be very cautious of those other reviewers that gave this book 5 stars.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good concept but loads of errors - buyer beware
I have never written an Amazon review but I thought I'd share my reservations about this book that I got to prepare USMLE step 3. As many others have commented, the concept is excellent, the case-questions-summary format really good to facilitate retention of the material. However, I am amazed at the huge number of mistakes that this manuscript contains. Some of the errors are so bizarre that they are unlikely to fool anyone, for example the recommendation to treat hypertension with "betablockers with intracarotid sodium amytal" (!!) (p.26, apparently they mean intrinsic sympathomimetic activity). Others are much more dangerous for your exam and your potential patients, like using "a PTT of 1.2 to 1.5" to monitor warfarin (should be PT or INR, p.35), stating that "one random glucose exceeding 125 mg/dl" defines diabetes (p. 95, should be two), treating status epliepticus with 50 mg dextrose (should be 50%, p.126), saying that "MCV<100" characterizes megaloblasic anemia (should be >100) etc. etc. In the adult medicine section I picked up an error like that every 4 pages or so - so imagine how many I must have missed!
In summary, I think this is a good concept bogged down by what I assume is sloppy proofreading. I would not trust this book to review material I am not very familiar with and I returned the book. I hope they'll do better in the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Review
Great Step III or Family Med review book. Very dense but excellent content. Note that some of the HTN guidelines are based on JNC VI (Joint National Committee on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure) and JNV VII was published in Fall of 03 so a few of the recommendations have been adjusted.

1-0 out of 5 stars A CME Rip-off
Potential buyer's of this review book should be aware that it was published in 2000 and is seriously out-of date.

I thought that the advertised web site would make up for that deficiency by being more up to date . . . it is not.

Most disturbingly, the advertised "75 hours in Category 1 CEM credits" are simply not available. When I sent in my check to register for these credits, it was returned "address unknown."

Stay away from this rip-off! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Another sign of decay in the SLP field
It is another sign of deterioration in the field of Speech-Language Pathology when the person elected to head the national organization in a time of crisis specializes in a medical procedure, rather than speech and language therapy. The field is in danger of losing even more of its focus and credibility than it already has. Unless SLP's concentrate on the core essentials of slp practice and find and refine treatment methods that have clinical research to back up their efficacy, the future is dim. Branching out into medical methods, as Logemann has done, is irrelevant to the serious needs of slp practice today. That Logemann was elected to head our national organization is a bad sign - not because of any merit or lack of it on her part but because the field seems to have no sense of what direction it should have. In the end, it seems to be a battle among three divisions in our field: those who are simply quacks and who are totally unconcerned with efficacy and who want the field to remain on an intuitive and "artistic/creative" level, those who want to rush into medical procedures that have nothing to do with speech and language problems, and those who want to concentrate on the core essentials of the speech and language disorders which our clients bring to us but who want to junk the quack treatments that discredit the field. What happens in the next few years, and the leadership we are given will determine if the field has a future.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too bad this stuff doesn't work
Insurance companies are being ripped off every year for millions in order to pay for a therapy that does not work. Speech therapists need to be held accountable to the same degree that physicians are.

5-0 out of 5 stars The classic text for dysphagia
Logemann and dysphagia are synonymous. Anyone even thinking of working with dysphagia patients needs this book in their library. Everyone refers to it. Everyone teaches from it. Everyone uses it when they need to brush up on their dysphagia knowledge. So what are you waiting for? Buy it!! Unlike many technical writers, Logemann writes well and only uses as much jargon as is absolutely necessary. I found this readable and as invaluable as I had been told that it was. There are only a few truly seminal researchers/therapists in the field of speech-language pathology and Logemann is one of them. ... Read more

I don't normally put my medical textbooks out for display, but I like to use this one as a conversation piece. Each chapter is well reasoned, concise, and suprisingly entertaining. The chapter entitled "Pharmacology of Hetastarch and Pentastarch" had me weeping. Med students - this book will help you fly through boards. Lay people - this book is a suprisingly good read. You know, I don't know this "Ron Faust," but I'm sure we would be instant friends if we ever met. I'd love to share a bottle of courvasier in front of a warm fire and discuss the finer points of anesthesiology with this man. My wife is sick of me talking about him.

Book Description

Forensic Pathology: Principles and Practice is an extensively illustrated reference book that contains more than 1800 color photographs accompanied by well-considered text that thoroughly explains representative topics, and also provides abundant, up-to-date references for further reading. This well-written volume uses a case-oriented format to address, explain and guide the reader through the varied topics encountered by forensic pathologists. It will benefit not only the experienced forensic pathologist, but also the hospital pathologist who occasionally performs medicolegal autopsies. Doctors in training and those law enforcement officials investigating the broad spectrum of sudden, unexpected and violent deaths that may fall within the jurisdiction of medicolegal death investigators will also find this an invaluable resource.

* Large, colorful photographs which beautifully illustrate the concepts outlined in the text.
* Sample descriptions of pathological lesions which serve to aid pathologists in reporting their findings to law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and others involved in investigations of sudden death.
* 'Do and Don't' sections at the end of each chapter which provide guidance for handling the types of cases examined within preceding sections.

Book Description

Anyone interested in psychotherapy or personal growth will rejoice at the publication of The Gift of Therapy, a masterwork from one of today's most accomplished psychological thinkers.

From his thirty-five years as a practicing psychiatrist and as an award-winning author, Irvin D. Yalom imparts his unique wisdom in The Gift of Therapy. This remarkable guidebook for successful therapy is, as Yalom remarks, "an idiosyncratic mÉlange of ideas and techniques that I have found useful in my work. These ideas are so personal, opinionated, and occasionally original that the reader is unlikely to encounter them elsewhere. I selected the eighty-five categories in this volume randomly guided by my passion for the task rather than any particular order or system."

At once startlingly profound and irresistibly practical, Yalom's insights will help enrich the therapeutic process for a new generation of patients and counselors.

5-0 out of 5 stars For both patients/clients and therapists.
If all of my psychotherapy patients read this book at the start of therapy, I think that treatment would progress faster and go deeper. This is a perfect book for therapists to give to their patients, friends, and families, to promote understanding of just what goes on in the consulting room. One caveat (which Irv acknowledges himself): this book is about patients who are very high functioning. Serious mental illness, suicide, etc. are mentioned only in passing. Young clinicians who unthinkingly apply Dr. Yalom's advice not to use psychiatric diagnoses could find themselves in a lot of trouble when working with a less fortunate patient population.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift from a Therapist
As a practicing psychotherapist myself, I have always wanted to know what goes on exactly in the therapy sessions of this field's great practitioners. There is no doubt to all in the field, that Irv Yalom IS one of those great therapists, (as evidenced by the volume of works he has produced and their indisupted impact on the field of therapy on subjects as diverse as Existential Psychotherapy, Group Therapy, the relationships between therapist and patient, treating cancer patients, and Nietzsche). Here at last, it is laid out for me fascinatingly and with great clarity. The humanity and wisdom of this therapist are combined to illustrate how an abundance of life's problems are explored and treated. THis is an excellent guide to therapists and I think would be equally compelling reading to patients as well, in their quest to discover what goes on in the minds of their therapists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple Tips for a Complex Field
Psychiatrist and Stanford Professor Yalom does it again in this existential psychotheraputic tip sheet designed for counselors and therapists (as well as therapists in training). With more than 80 one- to four- page "chapters" in just 250 pages, it's like having the "therapist's therapist" on your shoulder. This is Yalom's swan song and is grounded in more than thirty-five years of experience in facing life with clients in the here and now. Mazel Tov!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Therapy
The Gift of Therapy
by Irvin Yalom, M.D.
Reviewed by Suzanne M. Retzinger, Ph.D.

Waiting for my brother to complete his three-hour dialysis, I browsed the bookshelf provided for the waiting. I came across Love's Executioner and read it for the first time. I had read Yalom's Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy text in grad school - like all requirements. Now he grabbed me by the shoulders and forced me to listen - inspired, I had to read more and found The Gift of Therapy (2003, Perennial edition; 263 pages $12.95).

Yalom is the first, of many that I've read on the therapeutic relationship, who doesn't "talk" about the therapeutic relationship - but "shows" it - a path for the bold to venture, a real connection between therapist and patient. My interest in his work lies in his openness about his own feelings and how he uses them therapeutically. Nothing, he says, "takes precedence over care and maintenance of my relationship to the patient,... and how we regard each other." Most patients come to therapy starving for intimacy, their conflicts being precisely in this area - and it is the therapeutic relationship, itself, that creates change.

For this reason, the "blank screen" model is far from what Yalom sees as effective patient therapist relationship; he sees therapist opaqueness as counterproductive. Because of the alienated nature of many clients' lives, the here and now space between therapist and patient is what matters. It's about the space that we create with our clients and how we use that space - "the betweenness". Yalom spells out 3 levels of therapist transparency that can be productive or not, asking of each, "is this disclosure in the best interest of the client?".

Standardization, he believes, renders therapy less effective, threatening therapist spontaneity. Therapy is a journey - and in Yalom's view the therapist and client are "fellow travelers". Whatever relationship there is, we build together with our clients. Be "prepared to go wherever the patient goes" - The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose (Walt Whitman - Song of the Open Road).

The relationship is key - I know - I've heard this from the beginning: in school, supervision, exam study courses, yatta, yatta, yatta. But at the same time I hear "don't get too close", or "reveal anything about yourself", "god forbid you touch a client" - a double message - the unspoken message: hold your nose, close your eyes, use a 10-foot pole. In my first career - research - I learned to jump in with all I have - open my eyes, my ears and each and every sense, throw away that pole. Yalom breathes life into therapy by attending to the inbetweens, the emotions that arise in this space and discussion of this process with the patient.

Western culture is awash in alienation; therapy is a process that can renew intimacy for those who choose this path. It is a "dress rehearsal for life", says Yalom. Affect and analysis are altering sequences, microcosms of our patients' lives that must be examined for lasting change to occur. Feelings, thoughts, words along with their analysis are not taboo; they are the stuff of intimacy. We must not confuse intimacy with sex, Yalom says. Sex is always inappropriate with clients, intimacy is not.

Yalom expresses his concern with the direction the mental health field has taken. With the growing alienation in our world, people are becoming less important. Even in our profession we see fewer sessions provided by HMO's, medication in place of human contact, focus on technique, fear of intimacy because of lawsuits. In this age of pharmaceuticals, HMOs, and lawsuits, is the relationship being lost? This book (as well as his others) is a wakeup call, a reminder for us all - the experienced as well and the novice - that we are in the business of healing relationships and not to loose them in the shuffle.

Since that first day at the dialysis center where I found Love's Executioner, I've read much of what Yalom has written. It's not only the brilliance of what he writes that draws me in, but the way he writes that touches me. His books are "serious, down to earth, and pulse with levity and life".

Yalom's book The Gift of Therapy is a gift to therapists past, present, and future. Like Yalom, we need to 'show' and not 'tell' our clients the road to connectedness. My hope is that this, and other works like this, will not be lost in a world so desperately in need of human connection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real answers to real questions in clinical social work
This book gives the most honest, real, ethical and human answers to some of the most common questions young therapists ask (and seasoned ones, too, I have been told!) With a beautiful framework and combination of Gestalt and Person-Centered therapy styles, Yalom clearly and concisely addresses issues like: When your client weeps, occupational hazards, answering questions your client asks, taking patients further than you have gone, acknowledging your errors, discussing death with clients, taking notes in session, and giving yourself time between appointments, etc., etc.

The short chapters make it a realistic read for the very busy college student or therapist - to read in entirety or to read selectively on issues that are important for them.

I felt so much relief reading this book - specific answers and assurances about day-to-day occurances in the field (counseling, psychotherapy or clinical social work). I love all the examples he gives, and the range of ethical and appropriate solutions to the issues . . . his lack of personal bias.

This book is well worth the time and money - at least three times over! ... Read more
