5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful dermatopathology book
Wonderfull book, it has a summary table for each entity very useful for fast look, a lot of color images of great cuality and a text concise, precise and exact.

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive dermatopathology reference; easy to read.
It took quite some time for me to choose a dermatopatholgy reference. Most of my fellow pathology residents have been using Lever's book, mainly because that's what we have available. I decided to go out on a limb and try this brand new book. I'm quite glad I did. This book is a pleasure to use. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. My only criticism is that the index and table of contents could be more helpful. By the way, my colleagues are also glad I purchased this book. I hardly get to see it anymore! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best echo reference
Great tables of normal/abnormal values and diagnostic criteria (more complete than Otto and Mayo manual).Especially useful for practical echo reporting. The book does assume a basic working knowledge of echocardiography: beginner should use this book in conjunction with the Otto or Mayo text.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is THE Emergency Book to Own
Practical, concise and to the point, easy to find what you need and reasonably priced. Need I say more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Just get it!
I had the first edition; it was very good. This is a different book; much better. Tiny letters, no drawings, 574 pages, information on virtually every emergency you can think of. And good information, right to the point, no words wasted. It reviews 99 emergency syndromes in dogs or cats, 40 intoxications, and emergencies in 14 different exotic pets (including fish). Every item includes at least diagnosis, prognosis , and treatment, and has all the details and alternatives that you may need in an emergency situation. There is a certain amount af repetition but this allows one to use any chapter with complete independence from the others (that is what you want in an emergency). Not all syndromes may be real emergencies, but all need some quick medical response, and this books makes them easier and (I am sure) better. When I face an emergency, just feeling this book next to me is reassuring. Bravo, Signe, you wrote a great book and made a big favor to our profession!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of the best
This book represents a milestone for small animal emergencies. When you have a dog or a cat dying in front of you, there is no time for complicated explanations, you need an answer RIGHT AWAY!!! This book -believe it or not- is very fun to read, I read the whole thing in 3 or 4 days. I greatly recommend it !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've worn this book out!
Almost every day someone in the practice grabs this book from the shelf and invariably it contains the information they require. It is practical, accurate and concise - not much point in an emergency book which takes 20 pages to cover each topic! It lives in the real world repeatedly pointing out that it might be advisable to inform clients about cost and prognosis before going ahead with risky and expensive procedures. And there is so much more than emergency procedures in here - lists of drug dosages, brief overviews of exotic animals, fomulae - and every topic in short sharp style. I'll soon buy a new one as my current copy is stuck with tape and held together by an elastic band. Not ten out of ten though - it could usefully be published in a more robust form ... Read more

Book Description

A fully revised and updated edition of this unique and authoritative reference The award-winning A Guide to Treatments that Work , published in 1998, was the first book to assemble the numerous advances in both clinical psychology and psychiatry into one accessible volume. It immediately established itself as an indispensable reference for all mental health practitioners. Now in a fully updated edition,A Guide to Treatments that Work, Second Edition brings together, once again, a distinguished group of psychiatrists and clinical psychologists to take stock of which treatments and interventions actually work, which don't, and what still remains beyond the scope of our current knowledge. The new edition has been extensively revised to take account of recent drug developments and advances in psychotherapeutic interventions. Incorporating a wealth of new information, these eminent researchers and clinicians thoroughly review all available outcome data and clinical trials and provide detailed specification of methods and procedures to ensure effective treatment for each major DSM-IV disorder. As an interdisciplinary work that integrates information from both clinical psychology and psychiatry, this new edition will continue to serve as an essential volume for practitioners of every kind: psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers, counselors, and mental health consultants. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Bible for Evidenced Based Therapy
Nathan and Gorman have provided mental health practitioners with an essential reference. No practitioner of psychotherapy or psychiatric chemotherapy can afford not to buy this book (purchase price notwithstanding). This compendium reviews treatments for major psychological disorders and offers effect size estimates for the benefits of treatment (i.e., how much better off are people after treatment than if they got no treatment at all). In addition, the authors summarize the quality of the research on which their reviews are based. They not only examine psychologically based treatments, but also medication treatments for some disorders. All practitioners and consumers should read this. As a faculty member in a clinical psychology graduate training program, I recommended this book to my students as optional reading - and almost all of them bought it because they found it invaluable. I hope this authors will choose to update this book every ten years ago (it is very recent, so it needs no updating now). If they do, I have no doubt that Nathan and Gorman will come to be inextricably associated with this monumentally practical work, the way that Gray is associated with Anatomy. Kudos to the authors for giving us this essential reference.

3-0 out of 5 stars In defense of victimhood...
I straddle the fence between faith in allopathic (Western) medicine and a more wholistic approach. So I bought this book eagerly. I have been both intrigued and disappointed.

I appreciate the hard scientific information: how our bodies work, how various procedures and substances affect them, the latest developments in health care. I also appreciated reading that things that I have long considered normal, like pregnancy, are indeed natural processes and not diseases or disabilities. But I didn't appreciate hearing that most medical problems are rooted in dysfunctional emotional states. While I think that there are some conditions that are amenable to a psychotherapeutic approach, I KNOW that the hideous cramps I suffered all through my young girlhood, from age 11 to about 27, were a lot more than merely a function of my ambivalence toward my burgeoning womanhood. And while this isn't my problem, the idea that an enlightened female doctor would tell an infertile woman that her infertility is caused by her own psychological state vis a vis parenthood is absolutely horrifying. As is the idea that grapefruit-sized ovarian cysts can be reduced by changing the way we regard ourselves in a patriarchal society. And the idea that most of our plumbing problems are rooted in our victimhood reverses all the gains in strength and self-confidence we've made in the past 30 years. And the less said about her friend the "medical intuitive," the better!

I recommend this book only to women who are grounded, strong in their sense of self as non-victims, and well-versed enough in medical knowledge to winnow through the junk and glean the good medical information. For the rest, I think it could be quite damaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars at last, a book focused on all aspects of women's health
what a brilliant, sensitive, informed, and thoughtful way to approach health issues particular to women. (Dartmouth Medical School-educated, if I recall correctly) Dr. Northrup truly combines the "Western" with the more "Eastern" approach to health, and she does it in a very balanced way.

this book covers quite a bit of ground: from the special relationship between the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle to birth/miscarriage to menopause. it is not a book advocating one way or another, but rather explores and considers how a woman's health is affected by many things, both from within and without the body. she also talks about many things a woman can do to improve her health, in accessible and realistic terms.

I found especially useful the chapter on birth stories. Her discussion of labor and delivery allowed me to understand birthing on a deeper level, beyond the "pain," and provided me with more confidence and trust in my body and in the process of giving birth (which I was able to do without any medication). I loved the "wave" metaphor, that each contraction can be experienced as a wave that one dives under (mentally) to avoid being thrashed around.

lastly, this is one of a very few number of books that celebrates women and womanhood. just the title itself tells you so much. i think every woman would do well to have it on her shelf or next to her bed to consult from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for every woman
I got this book as a gift 2 years ago and it has been an amazing discovery of so many things about me!
This book speaks to me as I am sure it will for every woman.
A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book will teach you to think of your health and your whole self in a new way. Revolutionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Edged Sword
This is the first major book to look at women's health systematically from a holistic perspective. My sister, an ND, gave this to me many years ago. I have referred to it many times since I first read it and my friends always want to borrow it. It's a great reference.

If you are looking purely for an objective scientific book on women's health then don't bother with this. There is a lot of scientific info but there's a lot of "non-science" as well. Read the lowest reviews first which fairly summarise the weaknesses of this text. I agree that this book comes across as flaky in places however it is a breakthrough work in terms of systematically exploring the integration of mind and body and the effect of this balance on health.

While I applaud the effort to make people realise how their mental state can impact their health, the other side of that sword is that women feel they are to blame for having the "wrong state of mind" which leads to poor health.

For instance in one story a woman became infertile because, in the author's opinion, she didn't feel her husband was the right person to have children with. If you're pragmatic you can hear this story, consider if it applies to you and discard it if it doesn't fit. But some women could develop a guilt complex over something that is upsetting on its own without the added blame.

Ultimately, the problem with this kind of thinking is that it leads to a vicious worry cycle: you worry that you might not have the right state of mind for good health... and then you worry that your worrying risks your health further! But to ignore this altogether also poses risk. Stress does cause disease and an integrated approach to health cannot exist without considering a person's state of mind.

Because this book provides significant medical information, the reader could be lead into taking all the author's opinions as fact. Take the opinions as just that and you will find the book enjoyable. It is informative and thought provoking. ... Read more

The book organizes the crucial and most elemental information, combining clear instructional figures and tables with clinically relevant text. 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text for emergency med residents
I'm a second year emergency med resident, and I love this book. It's written for and aimed at emergency physicians. There are a lot of black and white photos of x-rays, CTs, and some ultrasound. There are also many hand-drawn illustrations that highlight what the radiograph photos are showing. Because this book is written by EM docs, there is a focus on clinical treatment. The text really focuses on what's important in interpreting and managing pts with these radiographic findings. There are a lot of photos, illustrations, and easy-to-read useful tables. I only wish that there were more ultrasound photos, but despite that criticism, I can confidently recommend this book to any serious EM resident.

5-0 out of 5 stars RADIOLOGY FOR EMERGENCY PHYSICIANS
Schwartz's Emergency Radiology was written by emergency physicians and it shows. It serves its mission well, that is, to teach radiology as it pertains to emergency physicians (from the foot to the brain, from CT scans to plain films) as well as serve as a valuable reference in the busy ED. High-yield radiographic images and anatomical schematics correlate nicely with the well-written text. The authors assume very little as the book relies on basic pathophysiology and general medical descriptives (understood by even beginning medical students) rather than the obscure terminology of most radiology texts (which are written by radiologists). The book goes further to correlate abnormal radiographic findings with the incidence of actual significant pathology, making it an exceptionally useful tool in this day and age of cost-effective resource utilization. Medical students will find it very readable and extremely valuable in its basic foundations. (I personally wish I had this as a student). Seasoned attendings in any field (maybe even radiologists!) will find definite practical value as well. In summary, this unique textbook comes highly recommended by this emergency resident who prefers to truly understand the pathophysiology behind radiographic findings and its clinical relevance without unnecessary details. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A lifesaver for people with back and neck pain!
Suza Francina, author, The New Yoga for People Over 50, Mayor Pro-Tem from Ojai, California, writes:

"I have been teaching yoga to people of all ages for over 25 years. One of the most common reasons people begin a yoga class is to get rid of their aches and pains. I can say with complete confidence that of all the books I've read on therapeutic exercise for back and neck pain relief, Dr. Schatz book offers by far the most effective, individualized approach to a healthy back.

Back Care Basics goes beyond generic exercises and takes into account each person's special circumstances. It is a lifesaver for people caught in the viscious cycle of pain and fear. I have referred to it countless times creating yoga based exercise programs for people in chronic pain. In fact, almost my entire copy is highlighted or underlined!

If you or someone you love is suffering from back or neck pain, I encourage you to educate yourself by reading this book. I also hope that other health professionals working with people with back problems--chiropractors, massage and physical therapists, acupuncturists, etc., will read this book and leave it in their waiting room. Chiropractors tell me that patients who are practicing yoga rarely have acute back pain and their adjustments hold longer. People with back and neck problems benefit more from other therapies if they practice the gentle yoga program taught in Back Care Basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immediate Results
I had heard lots of wonderful things about this book for the last few years. Then I bought a copy. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Dr. Schatz has compiled a book which is a must for anyone with back pain or neck pain.

Her diagnostic tests allow you to immediately identify your problem areas. The recommended exercises are clearly illustrated. You get exercises that are custom-made for your body.

Of course, the magic happens when you actually do the exercises. I saw remarkable results in my posture the very first day I started doing the exercises. The neck and shoulder tightness has also improved.

Dr. Schatz is an expert in this area, and this is not designed as "quick fix." This is a sound program to be followed over time. However, I must admit I was astounded at the speed at which I saw improvement.

If you have any back or neck pain, or poor posture, you absolutely must get this book. It will improve your health dramatically. Thank you, Dr. Schatz for this magnificent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heal thyself !
My sciatic pain had been relieved to some degree by a chiropractor and my general practioner handed me one page of exercises and did not seem to want to deal with my back pain; "Lose weight and walk...have a nice day" It was then that I researched this book and purchased it.

This book is wonderful and has allowed me to assess what exercises I need to do and how to move, lift, and sit to avoid problems. I have read at least 20 books on back care and this is the ONE!! It is not for those who want a "quick read" as you must read several sections in order and then assess your personal condition. However, the results for me have been truly amazing in about 3 weeks time.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent material
This book contains yoga based routines that helped my lower back pain a great deal. The author brings her medical background and her yoga background together to produce a wonderful resourse for the lower back pain sufferer. If you're like most lower back pain sufferers, you'll find that in order to get control of your pain, you need to do more than visit a physical therapist or chiropractor; you need to find a system of therapy that addresses your specific problems. This book is a good place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great guide to back health and treatment
This is an excellent guide to understanding and treating (and preventing) a variety of common back and neck ailments. Three things make this book great: 1. Its accessibility - the explanations are simple and clear, and the exercises/positions can be performed by almost anyone, regardless of ability/flexibility. 2. It's realistic: It doesn't go overboard and intimidate or discourage with too many exercises. 3. The author knows what she's talking about.

One word of caution: This book is not (nor does it pretend to be) a substitute for getting a proper diagnosis and, if needed, seeing a physical therapist for advice.

Highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description

This new edition of the classic psychodynamic psychiatry text Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice continues its tradition as the most readable, scholarly, and practical introduction to psychodynamic theory and practice available. Kept within arm's reach of all mental health professionals, this invaluable "one-stop" reference will prepare you to teach students and treat patients more effectively with its truly integrative psychodynamic approach.

The author has meticulously updated every chapter of the previous edition, adding new illustrative case examples and discussing the most recent research findings and concepts in psychodynamic psychiatry. It introduces the basic principles of psychodynamic psychiatry and the four fundamental theoretical frameworks derived from psychoanalytic theory: ego psychology, object relations theory, self psychology, and attachment theory. Drawing on the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience to validate the latest psychodynamic thinking, the author includes neuroanatomical illustrations that highlight the need to integrate psychoanalytic theories of development with brain development and the impact of environment on gene expression.

The eminently practical Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is organized into three distinct sections based on DSM-IV diagnoses:

  • Section I, Basic Principles and Treatment Approaches in Dynamic Psychiatry, begins by laying a foundation in psychoanalytic theory. It focuses on how to apply psychoanalytic theory to specific types of evaluation and treatment, including psychodynamic assessment, brief therapy, individual and group psychotherapy, family and marital therapy, pharmacotherapy, and hospital/partial hospital treatment.
  • Section II, Dynamic Approaches to Axis I Disorders, covers the major psychiatric disorders and discusses how to apply psychodynamic understanding to the treatment of patients with these disorders.
  • Section III, Dynamic Approaches to Axis II Disorders, provides a psychodynamic understanding of personality disorders and covers in detail the principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy for these conditions.

The fourth edition of Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice details the theory of psychodynamic psychotherapy and the adaptation of psychodynamic thinking to specific disorders. As such, it is an ideal companion to Dr. Gabbard's Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Basic Text, which details the techniques of dynamic psychotherapy.

The bestselling Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is the definitive reference for training programs of all kinds at all levels. This new edition provides a clear synthesis of diagnostic understanding and treatment unmatched in the literature. Marked by Dr. Gabbard's distinctly lucid and compelling prose, it is the ultimate psychiatric guide for the busy clinician and mental health student. ... Read more

Book Description

Newly appointed principal research investigators have to recruit, motivate, and lead a research team, manage personnel and institutional responsibilities, and compete for funding, while maintaining the outstanding scientific record that got them their position in the first place. Small wonder, then, that many principal investigators feel ill-prepared. In this book, a successor to her best-selling manual for new recruits to experimental science, At the Bench, Kathy Barker provides a guide for newly appointed leaders of research teams, and those who aspire to that role. With extensive use of interviews and a text enlivened with quotes and real-life examples, Dr. Barker discusses a wide range of management challenges and the skills that promote success. Her book is a unique and much-needed contribution to the literature of science. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic for the new professor
I love this book and only wish it was published when I was first starting a faculty position. Definitely a biologist's perspective (and a lab-oriented one at that), but it covers many of the trials and tribulations of starting a new faculty position: setting up a lab, assessing priorities, making hires, managing committees, managing colleagues, etc.

The worst part of the job is often maintaining harmony in the lab (which, of course, we're never taught in graduate school), and Barker has great advice on building or rebuilding lab morale, dealing with lab member disputes, and the dreaded firing process. I recommend this book wholeheartedly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be caught without it!
This book is extremely useful for all levels of scientists. An intresting read that will leave you feeling a whole lot wiser.

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding primer to managing a laboratory
Scientific faculty are chosen for their ability to do science; not to manage it. Indeed, many young scientists fail precisely because they are unable to shift from the bench to the office. Kathy Barker's book provides a wealth of information for new investigators. The advice, gleaned from interviews with a great many scientists, from Nobel laureates to those that have failed miserably, provides an outstanding road map for those embarking on this critical new phase of their career. No postdoc will leave my lab without receiving a copy as a parting gift.

1-0 out of 5 stars waste your money on something else
I guess you will only need the trivial advice presented in this book if you lack any common sense or if you should not have become a principial investigator in the first place. I found this book more or less useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for all research lab heads
This is a fantastic book. The author interviewed about a hundred new and seasoned lab leaders, and not only summarizes their advice clearly and succinctly, but also includes lots of anonymous quotations presenting a spectrum of opinions on any particular issue. And the book covers _many_ issues of interest to those setting up a lab, and those who wish to improve the way they run their lab. It focuses mostly on academic labs, but also presents some issues peculiar to industry. It really goes into every detail about people-managing issues.
Each chapter has tens of references to other useful books and articles. Kathy really did her homework. I can say nothing bad about the book. Get it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vision improves more than 25%
When I started this program, my perscription was -4.75 in each eye with enough astigmatism that I had to wear glasses to correct it. Now, three months later, I wear contacts at -3.50 and no correction for astigmatism and am seeing 20/20. I have hope that someday I might not need lenses at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really good book.
This book explains everthing about you eyesight and the way you can improve it. I recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hooray for this book!
I don't wear glasses and want to keep it that way! I'm 36 and noticing problems when I'm reading. Mr. Sussman's book is inspiring and easy to understand. His program is simple to follow, but very effective. It really helped me "see" the psychological reasons behind my vision limitations (as well as ways to help myself) and also tought me about good eyesight habits that will keep me from needing glasses in the future. Thank you, Mr. Sussman, for such a practical and holistic program!

5-0 out of 5 stars Doctor recommends The Program
I will be 79 this summer and have been coping with glaucoma for 12 years. My doctor recommended that I try the techniques in The Program for Better Vision, which he said could help to improve circulation, which in turn can lower intra-ocular pressure. This seems to be happening and my last 'vision field' tests showed remarkable improvement - some of my lost peripheral vision has returned.
I'm extremely gratified that I found your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most user-friendly book on vision ever written
In one of the most user-friendly books ever written on vision, Martin Sussman guides us on a path to understand and improve vision through personal change and a few minutes each day of activities.

Martin Sussman has been teaching vision improvement for a long time! I attended his EYECLASSES Seminar in 1979, and his extensive experience shines through clearly in this well-thought-out book.

Sussman offers a beautiful summary of "vision". It includes physical eyesight, emotional seeing, and inner vision. Physical sight involves more than 20/20 acuity. It includes the main skills of central-peripheral integration, teamwork between the eyes, and focusing.

Inner vision is the mind's eye, in all its different aspects, including imagination, memory, dreams, attitudes and visualization.

Emotional seeing refers to the eyes as both a way to express how we feel and a way to connect to other people. "The eyes are so often called 'the windows to the soul'; better vision is a way to heal, clarify and open these windows, allowing us to be open to a deeper connection to others and to give and receive more easily and fully."

The book uses affirmations extensively and offers easy-to-use instruction for explring vision and its connection to life in general.

The author offers simple guidelines to structure your program, such as deciding what glasses to use and how to use them, setting up a place and time to practice, and begin with an 8-week first stage. New guidance and activities are offered for a second stage for those who choose to continue beyond the 8 weeks. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What is a Pathology intern?
Practical, helpful, useful book. An excellent, wise choice; you won't be disappointed.
I'm a bit puzzled by a phrase in the previous reviewer's review, however: What is a pathology intern?
As someone who did a year of internal medicine (that is, an internship) before going on to pathology residency, and who now works with pathology residents, I'd like to point out that, as far as I can tell, there is no comparison between the first year in internal medicine, or surgery, or pediatrics (that is, the internship), and the first year of pathology training (called simply the first year of residency).
My internship year was the first year that the term "internship" was officially supposed to be NOT used; rather, we were to be referred to as "first-postgraduate-year" or "level I" residents, or something like that.
Typical foolishness from folks with too much free time.
Guess what: we were still referred to as; were still treated as; still referred to ourselves as; and still worked the ridiculously, unreasonably, brutally long hours of: ...interns.
Anyway, a great book - buy it, and use it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great choice for the Pathology intern
If you are a pathology intern or resident, this book was written just for you. How many of us graduate from medical school and remember basic histology? My guess would be few to none. The book is organized into sections based on organ systems and further subdivided into chapters on specific organs within those systems. It provides a "refresher" about the embryology and gross appearance of a particular organ before launching into the histology, and most people could probably use the review. The color pictures are excellent, and, in my opinion, a MUST for any book detailing histology; black and white photos just don't help me very much at this early stage in my career because they don't convey the details the way color photos do.

My only complaint is that the book has no photos that display the tissues as we actually see them in surgical pathology. For example, when I look at pictures of the histology of the colon, I would like to see a few shots of biopsied tissue rather than tissue that has been nicely sectioned from a colectomy specimen. Often, the tissue received for histology review is just a small fragment that is frequently missing some layers or may be crushed in areas, and it would be beneficial to see photos of the histologic appearance of these tissue fragments. That being said, the book is sometimes helpful in its written descriptions of artifact that may occur during tissue processing, and there are a few photos to go along with these descriptions. Perhaps I'm a little greedy in my desire for more photos, but someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words!

Don't buy this book to learn pathology; buy it to learn normal histology.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive, too voluminous, a bit boring, not great.
It is not easy to write a good histology book. Most histologists are not pathologists, and do not know a bit about real histology. These guys are M.D.'s, but because there many of them, the book is not a great success. E.g. there is no Toker cell, try to find a Merkel cell (not in the index, present in text).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great text for path residents
One of the most difficult parts of starting a path residency is knowing what is normal. This book is perfect as a review book and also during the residency.
I have reffered to it many times and feel it is an indispensible part of a pathologists library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible when you need a comprehensive histology source
This is a well organized text/atlas of histology that includes a modicum of histopathology as well. In my experience as a PGY-3 pathology resident, I don't refer to it very often, but when I do I find it to be indespensible. I have not come across any histology book that is quite so comprehensive. In addition, it serves as a fairly good quality atlas. My only criticism is that I would have liked to see more charts and tables with regard to immunohistochemistry and special stains. ... Book Description

Most people are both repelled and intrigued by the images of cold-blooded, conscienceless murderers that increasingly populate our movies, television programs, and newspaper headlines. With their flagrant criminal violation of society's rules, serial killers like Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy are among the most dramatic examples of the psychopath. Individuals with thispersonality disorder are fully aware of the consequences of their actions and know the difference between right and wrong, yet they are terrifyingly self-centered, remorseless, and unable to care about the feelings of others. Perhaps most frightening, they often seem completely normal to unsuspecting targets--and they do not always ply theirtrade by killing. Presenting a compelling portrait of these dangerous men andwomen based on 25 years of distinguished scientific research, Dr. Robert D. Harevividly describes a world of con artists, hustlers, rapists, and other predators who charm, lie, and manipulate their way through life. Are psychopaths mad, or simply bad? How can they be recognized? And how can we protect ourselves? This book provides solid information and surprising insights for anyone seeking to understand this devastating condition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative AND Entertaining
More often than not, a book that centers around anything psychological is well researched but boring to the point of tears. Dr. Hare escapes this trap and entertains and simultaneously informs the reader.

The book is loaded with examples of real life encounters of psychopaths, primarily those interviewed by Dr. Hare's research within prisons. However there are also a number of victims accounts and the tales they tell may sound a bit familiar to someone in any reader's life.

Dr. Hare obviously stands by his own research and his standardization tool for assessing psychopaths, the pyschopathy checklist. He details the difference between psychopathy and other other afflictions. He also gets to the hard truth..... we can recognize psychopaths among us, we can study them, we can even hope that we can develop ways to manage them, but we can never cure them.

The book is loaded with side stories and events that make it a gripping read without dumbing it down. The only complaint I had is that there wasnt more in depth case studies and empirical research to back his assertions. It is an ideal read for anyone interested in psychology, criminology, or any of the behavioral sciences. You wont be dissapointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Whoever Fights Psychopaths!
WOW. I just finished reading this book & I must say, it was a thorough read. Dr. Hare covered a wide range of levels of the psychopath, how to deal with a psychopath if you love one, how to view the "ethics" or "morals" of this type of criminal, & he gave plenty of case studies.

This is a great read for those who are interested in criminal psych / criminal justice!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book that needs to be sentenced!
This book is written inside out. It is has been written from inside the mind of a psychopath catching their every thought. It took me two years to read 220 pages, I could only read a couple of pages at a time. For those of you who have had a "Social Predator" come through your life, this book is terrifying. For those of you who have no knowledge of a pychopaths behavior, purchase extra copies of Dr. Hare's book. When I finally put this book down I was left with only one question. "When is Dr. Hare going to write a recovery book for the victims, who are living outside the minds of these "Social Predators."

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but wordy and repetitive
I can appreciate that the author did not have easy access to a broad representation of sociopathic individuals in the general population, instead most of his interviews and anecdotes were from prisoners. But the material became repetitious and I found myself skimming ahead looking for different kinds of examples. Instead it was another inmate with a similar scam. Most sociopaths are not behind bars according to the author but he did not discuss the ones on the loose at any length, yet these are the ones I would encounter. I would like to know how the "respectable" ones who ply their trade in society do it, what to look for and how to avoid their games.
This book is useful but limited. It's worth a skim.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Text on the Psychopath
In this seminal textbook, David Hare, distinguishes psychopathy from mere antisocial behavior, the main criterion used by the DSM-IV-TR to diagnose the Antisocial Personality Disorder.

The disorder appears in early adolescence but criminal behavior and substance abuse often abate with age, usually by the fourth or fifth decade of life. It may have a genetic or hereditary determinant and afflicts mainly men. The diagnosis is controversial and regarded by some scholar as scientifically unfounded.

Psychopaths regard other people as objects to be manipulated and instruments of gratification and utility. They have no discernible conscience, are devoid of empathy and find it difficult to perceive other people's nonverbal cues, needs, emotions, and preferences. Consequently, the psychopath rejects other people's rights and his commensurate obligations. He is impulsive, reckless, irresponsible and unable to postpone gratification. He often rationalizes his behavior showing an utter absence of remorse for hurting or defrauding others.

Their (primitive) defence mechanisms include splitting (they view the world - and people in it - as "all good" or "all evil"), projection (attribute their own shortcomings unto others) and projective identification (force others to behave the way they expect them to).

The psychopath fails to comply with social norms. Hence the criminal acts, the deceitfulness and identity theft, the use of aliases, the constant lying, and the conning of even his nearest and dearest for gain or pleasure. Psychopaths are unreliable and do not honor their undertakings, obligations, contracts, and responsibilities. They rarely hold a job for long or repay their debts. They are vindictive, remorseless, ruthless, driven, dangerous, aggressive, violent, irritable, and, sometimes, prone to magical thinking. They seldom plan for the long and medium terms, believing themselves to be immune to the consequences of their own actions. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited". ...
