I appreciate the hard scientific information: how our bodies work, how various procedures and substances affect them, the latest developments in health care. I also appreciated reading that things that I have long considered normal, like pregnancy, are indeed natural processes and not diseases or disabilities. But I didn't appreciate hearing that most medical problems are rooted in dysfunctional emotional states. While I think that there are some conditions that are amenable to a psychotherapeutic approach, I KNOW that the hideous cramps I suffered all through my young girlhood, from age 11 to about 27, were a lot more than merely a function of my ambivalence toward my burgeoning womanhood. And while this isn't my problem, the idea that an enlightened female doctor would tell an infertile woman that her infertility is caused by her own psychological state vis a vis parenthood is absolutely horrifying. As is the idea that grapefruit-sized ovarian cysts can be reduced by changing the way we regard ourselves in a patriarchal society. And the idea that most of our plumbing problems are rooted in our victimhood reverses all the gains in strength and self-confidence we've made in the past 30 years. And the less said about her friend the "medical intuitive," the better! I recommend this book only to women who are grounded, strong in their sense of self as non-victims, and well-versed enough in medical knowledge to winnow through the junk and glean the good medical information. For the rest, I think it could be quite damaging.
this book covers quite a bit of ground: from the special relationship between the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle to birth/miscarriage to menopause. it is not a book advocating one way or another, but rather explores and considers how a woman's health is affected by many things, both from within and without the body. she also talks about many things a woman can do to improve her health, in accessible and realistic terms. I found especially useful the chapter on birth stories. Her discussion of labor and delivery allowed me to understand birthing on a deeper level, beyond the "pain," and provided me with more confidence and trust in my body and in the process of giving birth (which I was able to do without any medication). I loved the "wave" metaphor, that each contraction can be experienced as a wave that one dives under (mentally) to avoid being thrashed around. lastly, this is one of a very few number of books that celebrates women and womanhood. just the title itself tells you so much. i think every woman would do well to have it on her shelf or next to her bed to consult from time to time.
If you are looking purely for an objective scientific book on women's health then don't bother with this. There is a lot of scientific info but there's a lot of "non-science" as well. Read the lowest reviews first which fairly summarise the weaknesses of this text. I agree that this book comes across as flaky in places however it is a breakthrough work in terms of systematically exploring the integration of mind and body and the effect of this balance on health. While I applaud the effort to make people realise how their mental state can impact their health, the other side of that sword is that women feel they are to blame for having the "wrong state of mind" which leads to poor health. For instance in one story a woman became infertile because, in the author's opinion, she didn't feel her husband was the right person to have children with. If you're pragmatic you can hear this story, consider if it applies to you and discard it if it doesn't fit. But some women could develop a guilt complex over something that is upsetting on its own without the added blame. Ultimately, the problem with this kind of thinking is that it leads to a vicious worry cycle: you worry that you might not have the right state of mind for good health... and then you worry that your worrying risks your health further! But to ignore this altogether also poses risk. Stress does cause disease and an integrated approach to health cannot exist without considering a person's state of mind. Because this book provides significant medical information, the reader could be lead into taking all the author's opinions as fact. Take the opinions as just that and you will find the book enjoyable. It is informative and thought provoking. ... Read more

"I have been teaching yoga to people of all ages for over 25 years. One of the most common reasons people begin a yoga class is to get rid of their aches and pains. I can say with complete confidence that of all the books I've read on therapeutic exercise for back and neck pain relief, Dr. Schatz book offers by far the most effective, individualized approach to a healthy back. Back Care Basics goes beyond generic exercises and takes into account each person's special circumstances. It is a lifesaver for people caught in the viscious cycle of pain and fear. I have referred to it countless times creating yoga based exercise programs for people in chronic pain. In fact, almost my entire copy is highlighted or underlined! If you or someone you love is suffering from back or neck pain, I encourage you to educate yourself by reading this book. I also hope that other health professionals working with people with back problems--chiropractors, massage and physical therapists, acupuncturists, etc., will read this book and leave it in their waiting room. Chiropractors tell me that patients who are practicing yoga rarely have acute back pain and their adjustments hold longer. People with back and neck problems benefit more from other therapies if they practice the gentle yoga program taught in Back Care Basics.
Her diagnostic tests allow you to immediately identify your problem areas. The recommended exercises are clearly illustrated. You get exercises that are custom-made for your body. Of course, the magic happens when you actually do the exercises. I saw remarkable results in my posture the very first day I started doing the exercises. The neck and shoulder tightness has also improved. Dr. Schatz is an expert in this area, and this is not designed as "quick fix." This is a sound program to be followed over time. However, I must admit I was astounded at the speed at which I saw improvement. If you have any back or neck pain, or poor posture, you absolutely must get this book. It will improve your health dramatically. Thank you, Dr. Schatz for this magnificent book.
This book is wonderful and has allowed me to assess what exercises I need to do and how to move, lift, and sit to avoid problems. I have read at least 20 books on back care and this is the ONE!! It is not for those who want a "quick read" as you must read several sections in order and then assess your personal condition. However, the results for me have been truly amazing in about 3 weeks time.
One word of caution: This book is not (nor does it pretend to be) a substitute for getting a proper diagnosis and, if needed, seeing a physical therapist for advice. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Book Description The author has meticulously updated every chapter of the previous edition, adding new illustrative case examples and discussing the most recent research findings and concepts in psychodynamic psychiatry. It introduces the basic principles of psychodynamic psychiatry and the four fundamental theoretical frameworks derived from psychoanalytic theory: ego psychology, object relations theory, self psychology, and attachment theory. Drawing on the latest breakthroughs in neuroscience to validate the latest psychodynamic thinking, the author includes neuroanatomical illustrations that highlight the need to integrate psychoanalytic theories of development with brain development and the impact of environment on gene expression. The eminently practical Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is organized into three distinct sections based on DSM-IV diagnoses: The fourth edition of Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice details the theory of psychodynamic psychotherapy and the adaptation of psychodynamic thinking to specific disorders. As such, it is an ideal companion to Dr. Gabbard's Long-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy: A Basic Text, which details the techniques of dynamic psychotherapy. The bestselling Psychodynamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice is the definitive reference for training programs of all kinds at all levels. This new edition provides a clear synthesis of diagnostic understanding and treatment unmatched in the literature. Marked by Dr. Gabbard's distinctly lucid and compelling prose, it is the ultimate psychiatric guide for the busy clinician and mental health student.

Martin Sussman has been teaching vision improvement for a long time! I attended his EYECLASSES Seminar in 1979, and his extensive experience shines through clearly in this well-thought-out book. Sussman offers a beautiful summary of "vision". It includes physical eyesight, emotional seeing, and inner vision. Physical sight involves more than 20/20 acuity. It includes the main skills of central-peripheral integration, teamwork between the eyes, and focusing. Inner vision is the mind's eye, in all its different aspects, including imagination, memory, dreams, attitudes and visualization. Emotional seeing refers to the eyes as both a way to express how we feel and a way to connect to other people. "The eyes are so often called 'the windows to the soul'; better vision is a way to heal, clarify and open these windows, allowing us to be open to a deeper connection to others and to give and receive more easily and fully." The book uses affirmations extensively and offers easy-to-use instruction for explring vision and its connection to life in general. The author offers simple guidelines to structure your program, such as deciding what glasses to use and how to use them, setting up a place and time to practice, and begin with an 8-week first stage. New guidance and activities are offered for a second stage for those who choose to continue beyond the 8 weeks. ... Read more

Book Description Reviews (5)
My only complaint is that the book has no photos that display the tissues as we actually see them in surgical pathology. For example, when I look at pictures of the histology of the colon, I would like to see a few shots of biopsied tissue rather than tissue that has been nicely sectioned from a colectomy specimen. Often, the tissue received for histology review is just a small fragment that is frequently missing some layers or may be crushed in areas, and it would be beneficial to see photos of the histologic appearance of these tissue fragments. That being said, the book is sometimes helpful in its written descriptions of artifact that may occur during tissue processing, and there are a few photos to go along with these descriptions. Perhaps I'm a little greedy in my desire for more photos, but someone once said that a picture is worth a thousand words! Don't buy this book to learn pathology; buy it to learn normal histology.

The book is loaded with examples of real life encounters of psychopaths, primarily those interviewed by Dr. Hare's research within prisons. However there are also a number of victims accounts and the tales they tell may sound a bit familiar to someone in any reader's life. Dr. Hare obviously stands by his own research and his standardization tool for assessing psychopaths, the pyschopathy checklist. He details the difference between psychopathy and other other afflictions. He also gets to the hard truth..... we can recognize psychopaths among us, we can study them, we can even hope that we can develop ways to manage them, but we can never cure them. The book is loaded with side stories and events that make it a gripping read without dumbing it down. The only complaint I had is that there wasnt more in depth case studies and empirical research to back his assertions. It is an ideal read for anyone interested in psychology, criminology, or any of the behavioral sciences. You wont be dissapointed.
This is a great read for those who are interested in criminal psych / criminal justice!
The disorder appears in early adolescence but criminal behavior and substance abuse often abate with age, usually by the fourth or fifth decade of life. It may have a genetic or hereditary determinant and afflicts mainly men. The diagnosis is controversial and regarded by some scholar as scientifically unfounded. Psychopaths regard other people as objects to be manipulated and instruments of gratification and utility. They have no discernible conscience, are devoid of empathy and find it difficult to perceive other people's nonverbal cues, needs, emotions, and preferences. Consequently, the psychopath rejects other people's rights and his commensurate obligations. He is impulsive, reckless, irresponsible and unable to postpone gratification. He often rationalizes his behavior showing an utter absence of remorse for hurting or defrauding others. Their (primitive) defence mechanisms include splitting (they view the world - and people in it - as "all good" or "all evil"), projection (attribute their own shortcomings unto others) and projective identification (force others to behave the way they expect them to). The psychopath fails to comply with social norms. Hence the criminal acts, the deceitfulness and identity theft, the use of aliases, the constant lying, and the conning of even his nearest and dearest for gain or pleasure. Psychopaths are unreliable and do not honor their undertakings, obligations, contracts, and responsibilities. They rarely hold a job for long or repay their debts. They are vindictive, remorseless, ruthless, driven, dangerous, aggressive, violent, irritable, and, sometimes, prone to magical thinking. They seldom plan for the long and medium terms, believing themselves to be immune to the consequences of their own actions. Sam Vaknin, author of "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited". ...
