Published in 2000. The title "for speech, language and hearing" means the systems of respiration, nerve and audition. Very clear and instructive text. This book includes a CD-ROM, with which program one can learn the basis of the anatomy and physiology, so to speak, the structures and its functions of human organs just by clicking. Although this program is designed for WINDOWS95/98, there is no problem for WINDOWS2000. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Physicist
We recently purchased this book and I find it extremely well written and useful. I would call it super for a physicist doing medical imaging research. The book reads like a reference text for a researcher. There are no cartoons or homework problems. The second edition is very up to date. The book could use some references to advanced information sources as it is a bit short on physics/mathematics details.

5-0 out of 5 stars suitable for teaching medical physicist wannabes now
I currently own the first edition of this book, and after flipping throug this new expanded 2nd edition, I'll be upgrading soon. The first book is an excellent text to use for teaching radiology residents the principles of medical imaging. Now, this second edition with greatly expanded content and pictures looks like it would be suitable for teaching a course to medical physics students. All sections appear to be significantly expanded with the additional detail needed for medical physicists. Still excellent for residents, but might go into a little more detail than they need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kudos for an excellent textbook.
Opening the pages to this textbook is like stepping into a classroom. These authors obviously are not only experts in their respective subspecialties of medical physics, but they are also seasoned teachers of the art and science of this field of medicine. This is easily evidenced by the clarity of thought and completeness with which they treat each topic in this comprehensive, easily readable textbook. I highly recommend this textbook to all who have a need for such a clear, concise teaching of the many aspects of medical physics covered in this work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Physics Review
This text book is the most up to date and comprehensive text book available for radiology residents preparing for the ABR exam as of this date 3/12/2002. I have recommended this text for my most serious students and they have done quite well on the ABR exam. ( Most have scored in the > 90th percentile in the U.S.) For residents who want to just pass the exam, I recommend Sprawls text.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for third year surgery clerkship
This book is just the right length for an aspiring surgeon to read during their surgery clerkship. If surgery isn't your bag then it's probably a bit much but is excellent as a reference for your patient's surgical issues. When compared against many of the larger texts such as Sabiston it doesn't seem to be missing much of the important information that I needed to write review papers or add to informal presentations. But it is much cheaper and less bulky, and thus ideal for medical students. I used this book along with the "Essentials of Surgical Specialties" volume.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the shelf
A perfect concise text for medical students on their surgery rotation. This book helped me do better on my surgery shelf than I have on any other shelf exam. Read the whole thing and take notes as you do.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lawrence-True Essentials of Surgery
I inititally bought this text in my second year of medical school. It was both an exceptionally detailed text and also a good reference on a wide variety of subjects. I have continued to use it into my surgical residency and expect to do so until I finish. My only detractions are that on occasion it is too densely packed with information, and that the section on peptic ulcer disease and the surgical treatment of the same is a little dated. Otherwise, any topic that a student needs to know about on a general surgical service is _well_ covered by this text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The encyclopedic bible of urology
This book is the most extensive single source of urologic information available. It covers all basic aspects of urology in a fairly complete manner. The main drawbacks are:
1)Reference authors quoted directly in text. This makes the book fairly diffcult to read in a fluid manner and adds extra length to the already lengthy text. Gillenwater is a much more readble text.
2)Some chapters need a better overall framework. The best example of this is the chapter on adrenal pathology which does not provide a very good thorough to the asymptomatic adrenal mass, by far the most common adrenal problem.
3)Often excessive discussion regarding all the studies for and against an issue. I feel that it would be better to state that an issue is unresolved and then list some appropriate ways of attacking the problem.
4)Certain chapters are written in the 1st person. The chapter on the technique of radical retropubic prostatectomy is a personal account and not a reference chapter. MAny innovations from other centers are missing making this chapter somewhat biased.

Overall an excellent and authoratative view or urology

5-0 out of 5 stars The bible of Urology....
If you need to know urology, then you need this set of book. This edition is set up very well. The 4 books make it easier to look up info. It covers all the major topics in urology and is as up to date as any book can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book in urology
This is indeed the best urological textbook, or better to call it the bible of urology , I can not wait for the next edition

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Excellent
This is a thourough urology review, meanwhile contains contraversial aspects in your front.

5-0 out of 5 stars The basis for any urology library
Medicine is obviously a rapidly evolving field and most medical texts receive a periodic retooling. All revisions should be as thorough and meaningful as the Seventh edition of Campbell's. The text has been sucessfully expanded where appropriate and each section further honed. Figures are elegant, pertinent, and well rendered. The references are all encompassing and as current as one can expect in a volume such as this. If there are any hesitations about updating from the sixth edition (which was also a vast improvement from the fifth) I hope to assuage them, encourage the reader and congratulate the authors. ... Book Description

As cytopathology knowledge has grown more expansive, so have cytopathology reference texts. Practical Principles Of Cytopathology breaks the trend by providing all the diagnostic information every pathologist needs for everyday consultation, in one easy-to-carry volume.

Already famous for his precise, yet uncomplicated style, Dr DeMay continues the standard of excellence he established in The Art and Science of Cytopathology in this completely functional and easy-to-use reference. Practical Principles of Cytopathology addresses all major organ systems in twenty information-packed chapters. More than 1,200 beautifully reproduced color images provide visual demonstration within one page of the text they illustrate. It presents clinical correlation and practical, vital information that bridges the gap between practice areas. And it does it in a volume that is a mere 2 kilograms - making it the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference that can be carried anywhere.

Practical Principles of Cytopathology is more than a repository of facts. It offers practical information, useful instruction, and valuable advise that every cytopathologist can use everyday.

Cytopathologists, surgical pathologists, cytotechnologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, and surgeons seeking immediate consultation will all rely on Practical Principles of Cytopathology as their at-hand diagnostic tool. No cytology laboratory, surgical center, or medical library is complete without Practical Principles of Cytopathology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have.
I like to call this book "baby DeMay". It's very well organized, great pictures, and a whole lot easier to haul off the shelf than the Big Daddy DeMays. Excellent as a quick reference and/or a study tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars A concise but comprehensive book with great images
This book, like its big brother (The Art and Science of Cytopathology, by the same author), is well written, even fun to read. It includes virtually the entire realm of morphologic cytopathology in a concise, portable format. It is well organized with separate chapters for the Pap smear, fluids and organ systems in some cases and individual organs in others. It even includes a chapter on gonads and a microbiology chapter covering many "bugs" that can be seen in cytologic specimens. The images are of excellent quality (as we have come to expect from Dr. DeMay) and include appropriate examples of specimens stained with Papanicolaou and Diff-Quick methods, in addition to some illustrative H&E histology. This book is an excellent addition to the library of the pathology resident, cytotechnologist and even practicing pathologist for a quick consultation, and I enthusiastically recommend it. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you're getting pimped at rounds, but....
Surgical Recall is great for those "pimp" questions at rounds and actually not bad for oral and written exams. However, to truly get the most out of a surgery rotation (even if you're not a surgical hopeful), you should read a unified text rather than a handbook of tidbits and pearls. That said, make sure you get this book because the authors knows how to zero you in on the important HIGHLIGHTS. Fill in the blanks with a great text (Not Lawerance! I used Sabiston and the baby Sabiston) and you'll shine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of its series
Although i don't like (Recall Series) much, but i've changed my idea after i used this book!! As 5th medical student, i highly recommend this book to be used in your surgery rotation. Together with (NMS Surgery), you will be smart..:)

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for third year surgery clerkship
This book is light enough to carry with you in your white coat, and not too burdensome in terms of details. As with all Recall books this is written in question and answer format which works better for some people than for others. If you are interested in going into surgery, or feel that you like to have massive quantities of relevant knowledge at hand at all times during your rotations I would recommend instead the Mount Reid handbook which is packed with much more information and has a better index all for about the same weight. But for those students who wish to just learn the basics necessary to do well in surgery this book works well and highlights all of the essential information needed on the wards and in the shelf exam.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for rounds, need extra for the shelf exam!
Everybody seems to love this text, and it is extremely useful at the hospital for those 5-10 free minutes to prepare on on of your cases/patients. Warning: My friends that read only this book and listened the the lectures did poorly on the shelf exam. I suggest reading The Essentials of General Surgery text by Lawrence, which I checked out of the library, cover to cover. This was an excellent text that is in depth enough to prepare you for the shelf, but short enough that you can read the entire thing in about 6 weeks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Surgical recall review
The one thing that other reviews fail to mention - don't buy the 3rd edition (2002) unless someone else is paying for it - like the military. The 2nd edition (1998) can be found at places like half.com and used through Amazon at less than $10 including shipping. The differences between the 2 editions is minimal - so many of these medical books are only updated to ensure higher sales - students are always worried that they are buying out of date information and so will pay the extra. ... Book Description

This new Second Edition addresses the latest in picture archiving and communications systems (PACS), from the electronic patient record to the full range of topics in digital imaging. In contrast to the previous edition, this updated text uses the framework of image informatics, not physics or engineering principles, to explain PACS. This book is the only resource that thoroughly covers the critical issues of hardware/software design and implementation in a systematic and easily comprehensible manner.
The new edition features additional chapters on web-based PACS, security, integrating the healthcare enterprise, clinical management systems, and the electronic patient record.
It addresses how PACS can improve workflow, therapy, and treatment, and discusses integration of PACS in hospitals. Offering a clear guide for those purchasing and installing PACS, it is written in clear, non-technical language by a widely acknowledged pioneer in the field and does not assume advanced knowledge of physics, engineering, or math principles. The text also contains substantive new treatment of key topics in image informatics, including light imaging, digital radiography, teleconsultation, and image archive servers.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is it
This book is great. Never before and I suspect never agin has so much information been put in one book. The book explains the manufacturing of mdma, along with its stroger and weaker counter parts. the book tells you what the color of the reactions are going to be. you cant go wrong!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book but some downfalls!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read Total Synthesis 2. In the book strike tells the reader, Step by Step, How to prefrom the manufactor of MDA, MDMA, MDEA, and whatever. I think tweak. All I wanted was to see the MDA/MDMA. (XTC) :)

Anyhow, I have not tried anything he wrote but I learned alot from his writings and could picture step by step what to get and how to do it. He has Pictures to show you what things look like and what to buy.

The only thing I did not like in this book is that some of his examples on synthesising these drugs are NOT TESTED and really have NO MERIT. If he did not perform the operations how would he really know they work in further case why even write them down and sell it in a book.

Thanks Strike, Great book

1-0 out of 5 stars interesting
quite interesting. in health class we watched a special that had been on nbc and it was about extasy and strike. so i thought i check this out. noone would want this if they saw the tape of the kids from arizona on extasy and they used strikes book. strikes name is hobart huson or something like that and it's really sad that he's doing this but it evidently does give all the info you need but i wouldn't reccomend it

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow enough said!!
If you ever wanted to know the insight on how all these drugs were made this is it. He goes threw everything you need with great examples and detail. This is a very all around good informational book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful adjunct
Total Synthesis II is an informative book on the production of a variety of psychoactive phenylamines, detailing several of the more common processes used to synthesise common psychoactive phenylamines. The beginning of the book has some fairly accurate descriptions of general lab techniques used for organic chemistry work. There is a section which describes some of the more common methods used to obtain the precursors and general reagents required to synthesise a variety of organic chemicals.

Whilst this book attempts to convey to the layman all the necessary knowledge required to manufacture amphetamines, most notably MDMA, it does little to explain the specifics of the chemistry being used. Despite claims to the contrary, it is my contention that this book alone does not provide enough information for your average speed or goog head to manufacture amphetamines in reasonable yields, or at all. This book does provide a useful compendium of current techniques and starting materials, which should be interesting to both law enforcement officials, and those inquisitive souls possessed of the necessary perseverence to garner an education in organic chemistry, and general lab practice. The book makes litle mention of the hazardous nature of many of the production techniques: hazardous to both the "chemist" and the end user, and it is likely that the sorts of people who will buy this book for the purposes of setting up commercial drug labs will injure or kill themselves using some of the techniques herein. This book does achieve the laudable goal of providing useful information to those people already possessed of a working knowlegde of organic chemistry and lab technique, also providing insufficient information for those people who just want to get rich quick by illegal means. This is noteworthy, because one of the main contributing factors in the illegality of drugs is the frequency of ignorant production by people not dedicated enough to understand that with which they play. A useful book, with an unusual narrative style. ... Read more

I have been teaching a graduate course in cleft palate and craniofacial anomalies for 20+ years. I am thrilled with Dr. Kummer's text. Students love it! The information is complex enough to be useful to an experienced team member, yet the novice reader is given sufficient background information to be able to grow with the text. Exceptionally thorough and highly recommended! ... Read more
