Book Description

Get an inside view of muscles in action! Like having an X ray as you work out, Women’s Strength Training Anatomy features full-color, detailed anatomical drawings of exercises for strengthening and toning the legs, buttocks, abs, and back.

Descriptions of proper technique work in tandem with the illustrations to promote clear understanding of how to maximize the efficiency and effectiveness of each exercise. Variations of these movements isolate specific muscles and help you achieve targeted results. Based on the anatomical features unique to women, this book caters to the mechanics and musculature of the female form like no other book on the market.

The former editor in chief of the French magazine PowerMag, author and illustrator Frédéric Delavier is currently a journalist for the French magazine Le Monde du Muscle and a contributor to several other muscle publications, including Men’s Health Germany. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, as far as it goes
If this book included the upper body (and more back exercises--deadlifts and back extensions are at the very end as an afterthought) I'd have given it at least 4 stars, if not 5.

I liked the idea of a strength training book for women that addressed our physiological differences, had great illustrations of which muscles are involved in each exercise, and showed women doing real exercises like deep squats, good mornings, etc.

Unfortunately, I didn't look at the small bit of the title which tells you it addresses lower body only. Where are the chest, shoulders, arms and the rest of the back?

Have to agree with the reviewer who mentioned the hip adduction illustration. Bare chest and, of course, nothing on the lower torso since the illustration is showing us the muscles involved. Given the legs wide position of the hip adduction machine, this picture seemed more sexual.

Maybe the author is planning Part 2 that will include the upper body.

Again, I feel the back was sorely overlooked here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Marketing lies
This book is actually a partial reprint of Delavier's complete book, "Strength Training Anatomy," which includes both upper and lower body workout illustrations. But in that book, almost all of the upper body illustrations are of men working out -- so I'm guessing they just took the second half of that book and repackaged it "for women" (though I haven't actually read this book).

The complete book is a good collection of exercises. I would definitely recommend it, even with its sometimes unnecessarily sexually graphic illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
This book is a great help for training trouble spots. It covers training the lower body (back, abs, legs and butt). It gives many exercises for each body area (27 butt, 37 legs, 34 abs and 6 for back) each with a perfectly drawn illustration showing the muscles effected by the exercise and clear explanation on how to correctly perform the exercise. Most of the exercises can be done with minimal equiptment (free weights and bands) at home, only a few cover gym machines. This book does not give routines or diet plans. After 10 years of gym training I am now training at home. This no nonsense book has been an invaluable source of exercises and information for training (especially trouble spots) without the use of gym equiptment. Highly recommended!

1-0 out of 5 stars insulting and demeaning
I wanted to write a quick review for this book. While the information is valuable and accurate, this type of information can easily be found in any checkout counter "beauty magazine". The reason I am taking the time to write this is bacause any woman who wants to know about her anatomy and how it works in relation to work and exercise in a gym is definately going to raise her eyebrows at the way the women in this book are posed and drawn. Albeit some nudity is necessary to demonstrate the use of certain muscles, (strip away some skin as well), but in some of the examples it is ludicrous for me to believe that the artist isn't using a slight pornographic eye. For instance,on page 69 (is that an accident?) the woman is doing adductors at a machine and she is completely nude! This is a difficult machine for alot of people to use because of the obvious position it puts you in, then the "artist" draws only this woman completely nude. You can be rest assured you will see at least one nude breast on every other page. It was very funny to look at, but as far as a book to walk around with at the gym, I will pass thank you. If a man even picked up this book at the gym he would be called a pervert! In conclusion, I want to reinforce my statement to pass on this degrading book supposedly for women to help us with our workouts. Well, I wasn't fooled. This book gets two thumbs down and line the kitty litter with its pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference and teaching aid for personal trainers
I'm a personal trainer and found this book to be a great learning aid for my personal trainer national certification exam. The pictures are just great. They are transparent in the way they show you the muscles. For example, when doing a lat pull, it shows you the muscles that are being contracted. Also, the pictures are quite detailed and very descriptive. In this way, not only it helped me to be a good personal trainer but it was a great reference for my national certification exam. I also used the following which cut my study time in half for my national certification fitness exam: Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology by Patrick Leonardi
This book made anatomy and physiology much easier to understand and helped me to get passing grades. I give both books 10 stars ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars where's the beef
I've been running for 35 years and coaching for many so I expected to pick up a book that would give some insight into a young runner's mind or some biomechanical needs of a young runner. The book is a cursory view of coaching and training. It's fine if you are just starting out with no background. But where's the meat and potatoes?

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and informative, a good reference manual.
I am a Cross Country Coach for Lakeshore Middle School in Stevensville, MI and am building a program. I found the "Training for Young Distance Runners" book to be very helpful. I have found the section on Psychology right on target. I have a son that runs High School Cross Country who runs year around and after a successful summer road racing season started the Cross Country Season doing very poorly. Using the Psychology section helped me get him back on track. The Nutrition section has also been helpful for some of my runners. I give the book a two thumbs up.

4-0 out of 5 stars good guide
I liked how this booked emphasized how important mental training should be integrated into a good, solid training prog. The scientific aspect is easy to understand though not nearly as thorough or complex as Martin and Coe's book. The training is very conservative, but the strength training advice was very helpful. ... Read more

Book Description

Put science to work for you in the pool to swim stronger and faster than ever! Swimming Fastest is a fully revised and updated version of Swimming Faster, widely considered by coaches and swimmers as one of the best books ever written on competitive swimming. Author Ernest Maglischo reveals the science behind the training methods that led his teams to 13 NCAA Division II national championships.

Swimming Fastest is the definitive reference on stroke technique and training methods. In addition to explaining what swimmers should do, Maglishco explains why techniques and training are to be executed a certain way.

A primary feature in the book is a thorough and insightful technique analyses of the four primary strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. Accompanying the text are more than 500 photographs and illustrations, including photos of world-class swimmers demonstrating picture-perfect form. Supporting the technical instruction is a complete explanation of the physiological basis for the most effective training methods, including detailed sample workouts and training programs for each event.

Swimming Fastest will benefit every serious swimmer and swimming coach. Gain new knowledge, refine technique, maximize training, and trim precious seconds off previous record times. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pointers for the Competitive Swimmer
Every little meticulous detail of the stroke adds up to a faster time. Maglischo knows every trick in the book--he WROTE the book--to improving a swimmer's technique. As swimming philosophy changes, Maglischo adapts and is open to the new scientific discoveries that shape the winning techniques of swimmers like Michael Phelps and Ed Moses.

Were you ever taught to swim with your head up? Coaches used to teach swimmers to crank their necks so that the water breaks right over the goggles, on the forehead, because they saw that the fastest swimmers rode very high in the water. Maglischo points out that this is an illusion. The fastest swimmers are going so fast that their heads raise slightly, like a jet ski with its nose out of the water. Instead, you should keep your head in alignment with your spine for more efficiency and less strain on the neck.

This is the kind of ingenius revelation that Maglischo offers in Swimming Fastest.

Note: this is NOT for the beginning swimmer. It is dense, mathematical, and technical. It is not a "how-to" book.

With that in mind, buy Swimming Fastest and expand your understanding of the sport.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very advanced book. Not for beginners
I am a novice swimmer. I can swim breastroke, but poorly and I got this book to improve. Mistake.
This book is very advanced. You can see that it is well documented, researched to a level close to academic style. The book is really concerned with speed, and is directed to coaches and swimmers who are starting to compete.
Although you could potentially take this book without having ever swum before and learn from here, in practice I don't recommend it: there are far too many details and seeing the forest is terribly hard because of the trees.
I found particularly hard to understand the movements from the drawings and pictures. I would expect drawings to show the whole body at different stages, instead you get the arms in one drawing and the legs in another drawing. Each drawing is subdivided in three quadrants: 1) seen from the front 2) seen from the side 3) seen from below. The WHOLE movement is depicted in ONE drawing: the only thing depicted is the path you should be following with the hands (respectively, legs). It is left to you to figure out how to achieve the movement puzzling together the three quadrants and the (very detailed) explanations in the text.
You can then read the section on how put the legs and arms together and you have the whole thing. But it is too hard for a novice, in my opinion.
Being a graduate student myself, I see how such a precise description could be invaluable to athletes, but in the same way as you would not start studing physics from a PhD level text book, you are better off not starting to learn swimming from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!
This is the third (and we hope not the last) edition of "Swimming faster". Professor Maglischo wrote again an improved "version". We can only thank him and congratulate him for this landmark work. The book offers important help to the problem of drag or lift dominated propulsion and Dr. Maglischo explains his thesis (the one we saw in ASCA periodicals in 1999 and in some of his lectures/interviews).

5-0 out of 5 stars Maglischo Even Better
-
Swimming theory has advanced significantly since Dr.
Ernest Maglischo wrote Swimming Faster 1982 and
Swimming Even Faster 1993. He opens Swimming
Fastest with an acknowledgement that his views on
propulsion have changed significantly with each
successive book. He writes this book in a more
personal voice than the 'third person authoritative'
style of the previous weighty tome, and I find it
much more readable.

In the largely rewritten and well-illustrated
section on Technique, Maglischo describes his latest
beliefs on effective swimming technique. In some
cases, he allows for differing techniques or styles
of swimming, but general favors one method.

Although he generally agrees with the drag-reducing
fundamentals and front-quadrant stroke timing of the
very popular style coached by Bill Boomer, Emmett
Hines and Terry Laughlin and exemplified by the
efficient, long-reaching front crawl styles of Alex
Popov and Ian Thorpe, he offers much criticism of
what he calls "Stretch-Out" swimming, in which he
says that the emphasis is on stretching forward too
long, and swimming a catch-up style, to increase
stroke length rather than speed.

His less-revised section on Training includes
improved illustrations and sample training routines
used by Janet Evans, Susie O'Neill, Brooke Bennett,
Kieren Perkins, Mike Barrowman, Alex Popov, Penny
Heyns, Tom Dolan and Summer Sanders. It includes
the most thorough look at breathing strategies I
have ever read.

His brief Racing section presents numerous splits of
races by the swimmers mentioned above, at various
distances and strokes.

Essentially, Maglischo has vastly improved what was
already the most thorough and highly-regarded book
in the field. ... Read more

I am an amatuer athlete and constantly try to update my skills. I have read a number of Sports Psyc. Books and feel this book is a little weak. To much reliance on the same old stuff. Good stories, somewhat inspirational. The best book I've read to date is an Amazon recommendation titled, The Mental Edge. Excellent application of techniques that are the cutting edge.

Me gustaria saber si existe una edición en español del libro de Terry Orlick. Desde ahora muchas gracias

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical-user-friendly psychology of performance manual.
Terry Orlick manages to weave anecdotal examples of how the mind can be the difference between performance and "peak performance". This book is packed with practical exercises, check lists and "how-to's" to learn and apply the mechanics/techniques of sports psychology. Nifty quotes at the beginning of each chapter. WARNING: It won't turn miracles. It will not give you talent you never had or replace hard work.

If you've ever found yourself belaboring a performance error, regularly using negative self-talk or "choking" in those key situations... then this book is for you.

It does require a belief... the belief that mental training will work. "Belief is the mother of reality." ... Read more

Book Description

Protein, and the amino acids of which it is composed, is an important part of athletes' diets, and the subject of a great deal of discussion and controversy. Amino Acids and Protein for the Athlete-The Anabolic Edge is the first single volume devoted to this important topic. In addition to basic information about protein and amino acids, this very timely book describes the anabolic effects of high-protein diets, the values of different food proteins, the differences among various protein foods, the advantages of specific proteins, processes to maximize the value of protein, and the biological and pharmacological effects of certain amino acids.A world-caliber athlete for two decades, Dr. Di Pasquale has won the World Championship and dozens of national and international competitions, including the World Games, Pan American Games, North American Championships, and Canadian Championships, all in the game of powerlifting. Written by this recognized expert on sports nutrition, the book will appeal to both sports professionals who need to maximize strength and endurance and weekend warriors who want to understand the science behind the role of amino acids and protein in athletic performance. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Just What I Was Looking For.
This is a terrific book. Yes, it's technical, but if you managed to get through moderately advanced High School science courses, or if you hacked college, don't sweat it, you'll get it. Di Pasquale--an M.D.--gives much in-depth, detailed information on the metabolism, physiological effects of, and potential for excercise enhancement of amino acids, proteins, and their effect on body hormones. Di Pasquale knows that the reader wants to apply the information to athletic performance. He talks about both anaerobic and aerobic excercise, but since he is a former powerlifting champion, he zeroes in on anaerobic excercise (e.g., bodybuilding, powerlifting), which is very refreshing. You also get summary detail toward the end of the book that gives sample supplement doses and critical timing of dosing to maximize results. Di Pasquale also weighs in on other non-amino acid supplements that affect anabolism (or purport to) such as Pyruvate, HMB, etc. (There's no info on steroids, so forget about that.) Overall a terrific advance for bodybuilders and worth it if you want to get away from all the hype and zero in on some science. This book is for the thinking bodybuider. Naturals, in particular, have much to gain.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent information
This book, while a bit technical, is not beyond the understanding of anyone with even the slightest knowledge of nutrition. It is comprehensive, well documented, and offers a total explanation about how protein and amino acids interact with exercise to promote muscular development. It is the best book on the subject in current existence.

3-0 out of 5 stars A mediocre book without a Phd in the sciences
This book had good points and bad points.some of the information contained was applicable for self educated bodybuilders but unfortunately for the most part their was a plethora of technical information that is difficult to comprehend.I have the upmost admiration for mauro di pasquale but i feel this book was written with medical practitioners in mind and not average bodybuilders

I lead canoe trips in northern Canada for the Science Museum of Minnesota. Many of our expeditions take us above the Arctic Circle. Forgey understands that "evacuation", per se, is often not an option in a genuine wilderness setting. This book clearly and quickly pinpoints solutions to problems and tells you how to deal with them. Forgey provides a host of medical options: you can choose sophisticated Rx medicines, or stick with over-the-counter stuff. "Doc" lays out all options and provides alternatives. A superb index provides fast reference to problems--and, this handy little book fits right in your backpack. It's worth every penny--and each new revision is more thorough than the last. How can you make the best textbook in the field of sport and exercise physiology better? Leave it to authors Jack Wilmore and David Costill, two of the field’s most respected scholars, to do so. The thoroughly revised second edition of Physiology of Sport and Exercise redefines the discipline’s standard for textbooks.

Improved features
Here’s what makes Physiology of Sport and Exercise an even better resource:

· A better organization of the field’s subject matter
· Dynamic graphic presentations—featuring four-color photographs, graphs, and illustrations—that complement the text and encourage a deeper understanding
· Clarity of language and reader-friendly presentation of information including color-coded chapters, chapter outlines, key terms and points, summary boxes, study questions, glossary and index
· Thoroughly updated information based on the latest research findings
· A new student study guide that features active learning exercises
· Metric as well as imperial measurements

Supporting materials
The new edition includes dramatically improved and expanded supporting ancillary materials to help instructors teach the course.

The text’s supporting materials include the following:

· An electronic Instructor Guide new to this edition, free with course adoptions
· A revised and improved Test Bank, free with course adoptions
· A much expanded Graphics Package for PowerPoint or slide presentations, free with course adoptions

Plus, instructors have the added convenience of being able to travel to a website to retrieve some of the course’s ancillary materials.

Organization of the text
The logical order of the text has been retained, and it provides a comprehensive overview of the field without being overwhelming. Wilmore and Costill thoroughly explain all concepts so students can comprehend rather than simply memorize. The text masterfully provides a solid foundation of basic physiology from which to better interpret and understand sport and exercise physiology.

In Parts I through III, the authors review the major body systems and examine the body's acute response to exercise and its chronic response to training. In Part IV, students learn how the environment affects these responses. Part V examines various approaches used to optimize performance. Part VI focuses on unique concerns of special populations involved in physical activity, and Part VII examines the importance of physical activity to lifelong health.

Updated information
The second edition has been updated to include current information regarding the following:
· Structure and compartmentalization of myofibrils and the sliding filament theory
· Neuromuscular factors and individual muscle fiber hypertrophy with resistance training
· Ergogenic aids including L-tryphtophan, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), L-carnitine, creatine, chromium, and glycerol
· Recent results from longitudinal studies of older athletes
· And much more!

Now you can offer your students the very best textbook available for bringing the field of sport and exercise physiology to life. Physiology of Sport and Exercise—a powerful and engaging learning tool—offers students a jump start in their studies. And with adoption, you’ll receive an excellent package of teaching materials free. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reference material
This book is excellent consolidation of reference material which is sensibly divided into logical chapters.

It covers every area of sport performance in well-documented and example-driven text, colour diagrams and graphical representations. It is a generic reference book, which does not focus on specific sports activities, but uses examples from a wide range of sports to demonstrate the body's response to exercise, training and the passage of time.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a detailed overview of the physiological responses to training, or needs specific answers to questions. An excellent index and layout also makes this a good reference book for looking up quick answers to problems. Absolutely worth the cost. Only criticism... there is a slightly schizophrenic approach to units of measure, reflecting the US imperial measurements, Keep a calculator handy to convert to SI units (eg Kgs, Kms, etc)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to exercise physiology
This book is well-illustrated and easy to read, but it is really a basic text, not the end-all. For example, in the section on nutrition, the authors recommend that carbohydrates should constitute 50% of an athlete's daily calories, and yet they neglect the fact that so many people in this country do not tolerate carbohydrates well. Nutrition really needs to be adjusted to the individual's metabolism and needs, and there is really no one set magic formula that will work for everyone. But, if you keep that in mind and are looking for a good introductory text, this will serve admirably.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Exercise Book
A good physiology exercise book is so important to understanding the body and how all of the different systems work together. This book does a great job of explaining concepts by colorful graphics and pictures. If your an advid athlete like myself you will enjoy this book. I was always chasing the new fads in exercise or trying the latest diet to trim down, they never worked. You must first understand some of the complexities of the human body. Likewise, if you want to tweak your car's engine you must first understand some of the most basic principles of a car engine before adding expensive and useless gadgets. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars worth a buy if you do not mind typos
Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques is an alternative to Travell's Trigger Point Manual if you do not do TP injections. It has great pictures, well explained treatment techniques (if you are up to date with your anatomy and medical terms) and lots of references. The disadvantage are typos (the editor must have had a bad day and was unable to write the German words for the references right, but also some English words are off!) Parts of the text are repeated in the book twice, what I thought is unnecessary and only adds to the number of pages but not the quality of content.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for the money!
I'm an Advanced Practitioner of Massage Therapy and find this book VERY helpful. The Muscle Energy Techniques (M.E.T.s) are explained very thoroughly, and the accompanying drawings, and or pictures, are very helpful. While familiar with the M.E.T.s, having this book as a reference for all the upper body muscles, and their positioning for the best M.E.T. applications, is very rewarding. I'd recommend this book highly to anyone that has a basic understanding of the therapeutic aspects of massage and M.E.T.s.
Mr. Chiatow and Ms. Delany, PLEASE!!! I can't wait for the next volume! I'm sure the Lower Body will be as good!

5-0 out of 5 stars Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Techniques - Vol. I
This is a really clearly written, concise book, with drawings and pictures of muscle positions, trigger points, etc. I bought the Jane Travell Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction Books before this one came out, and for the money wish I had bought the Clinical Application of Neuromuscular Tech. Book. Unless you are a Physician, who wants to inject the patient's trigger points with a saline solution, and then you better be very exact in your aim with the needle, I think the Clinical Application of Neurom. Tech. Book is a much more practical, useful, hands on, straight forward book that addresses all the trigger points, origins and insertions of the muscles in a very user friendly way. Until this book came out, Jane Travell's was the only great reference guide; but what patient really likes injections? Now this book surpasses Dr. Travells, in that all the material in it is useful and usable. Can't wait for Vol. II, Lower Body, to come out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Triathlon 101 Delivers what is promised
As the name implies, and the introduction states, this book is for the novice. It is excellent for that purpose. It provides a lot of encouragement and basic advice. If you haven't run a triathlon, this is a great place to start. Other books on triathlon are more technical and may be intimidating. Triathlon 101 should also benefit someone who has tried one or two triathalons and wants to learn how to train smarter. But an experienced person would probably find the content too light.

Triathlon 101 provides minimal details about equipment and technique. Rather it focuses on encouraging and training novices. The recommended training schedules are applicable to all levels but are most detailed for the beginner. The focus is on injury prevention through gradual increases in intensity. The book has many sidebars which chronical stories of people who have over come adversity to move on to become leading ironman triathletes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the first time triathlete
This book helps beginers understand what triathlon is about and is a perfect intro to training for a sprint distance event. First timers will probably need more specific books if they want to train for olympic distance triathlons and sharpen their technical skills (especially for swimming where I would recommend Total Immersion: the revolutionary way to swim better, faster, and easier by T.Laughlin and J.Delves). This book made me love triathlon! I recommend it to anybody who wants to start in multisports.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I needed
I've been running and biking for years, but I wasn't sure I was up to a tri. This book gave me just what I needed to get started. I even picked up some useful tips on biking, which is genereally my strong suit. This is a book I'll go back to again and again. I highly recommend it for the beginning triathlete.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its title
As the title suggests, this is a great book for getting a comprehensive review of what it takes to run your first triathlon. If you are looking for one book that will cover all three areas of training and describe what it is really like to compete in a triathlon, this is it.

Although the author is an experienced triathlete, he avoids the tendency to digress too much into personal reflections, which many of the biography-style guides to triathlon do. The practical advice about equipment is very helpful and not tied to specific products. I found the section that talked about "the frugal triathlete" to be very refreshing.

The information on workouts is definitely enough to get anyone started, no matter what your background. I'm a swimmer who has never run before, and I am so pleased to be able to follow the "initiation" workouts for non-runners. The blank templates for workout schedules are also very handy.

This is a perfect book to get started with and is likely to remain relevant for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it!
This book was easy to understand and enjoyable to read. It was kept light and entertaining for a beginner like myself. It helped me to prepare for my first triathlon. A good buy! ... Read more

Book Description

The first authoritative guide for keeping female athletes healthy and injury free

Women's and girls' participation in sports grows exponentially every year, and everyone knows that women's bodies are constructed differently from men's, yet there have been no books on sports injury and health specific to a female athlete's needs.

Until now.

In The Female Athlete's Body Book, Dr. Gloria Beim--orthopedic surgeon, physician for the U.S. National Track Cycling Team, and accomplished athlete--presents the first authoritative sourcebook for every female athlete who wants to get in the game and stay there. She provides sound advice on an array of concerns including:

  • How to minimize injury while enhancing sports performance
  • Nutrition and training for top performance and lifelong health
  • The specific needs of younger, pregnant, and mature athletes
  • How to fight menstrual problems, bone loss, and eating disorders
  • What to do when an injury occurs

5-0 out of 5 stars If you're an active woman, you should read this book...
I was so impressed with both the amount of information in this book and the ease of finding information specific to a certain body part or sport. It reads like a casual conversation with a trusted trainer/doctor--all the medical terms are explained well in "normal peoplese" language--and yet it's very comprehensive and does focus both on the prevention and treatment of common sports and activity injuries in females.

I played 3 sports in high school, did intramurals in college, and have participated in various adult leagues and other physical activities ever since my college graduation 5 years ago. I seriously wish that someone had given me this book 10 or 15 years ago, so I could have been doing more to protect my body and optimize my performance all this time... and I am buying more copies of this book to give out to all of my active girlfriends for their next holiday/birthday.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book!!
I'm an athlete. Reading this book helped me to understand how to avoid common injuries associated with the sports I play that I had previously experienced and how to prevent them. It was so well written and easy to read. Thank you Dr. Beim! Now when I participate in any sport, I can do so with the added knowledge of preventing injury.

5-0 out of 5 stars One just for us!
Finally a book just for woman athletes! I have had sports related injuries in the past and now I know what to do to prevent them. I thought the information was great and presented in a concise and easy to follow manner. I recommend this book to highly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for the serious athlete.
While this book may be great if someone is just getting started at a certain sport, it doesn't help if you have already been doing that sport for a while. This is because you probably already know all of the things in the book.

Also, more than half the book covers individual sports; if you don't actually play all of these sports (as most of us don't), then a good portion of the book will be useless. (And if the sport you play isn't actually covered in the book, then most of the book is useless.)

Overall, I was disappointed because I am an athlete and hoped that the book would be geared more toward serious athletes, not beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read!
This book is awesome! I just read the section on knee injuries and learned what I should have known last year before I underwent ACL reconstruction. Dr Beim's explanations are very clear and readable. This is the kind of information you need to be your own advocate when visiting the doc to discuss your injury. It's so important to be armed with this kind of powerful information when you are choosing a surgeon. I sure wish I had read this book and knew what to ask my Doc BEFORE my surgery. I'm sure it would have saved me from having to go under the knife twice!
I highly recommend this book for every active female who wants to be proactive in her own health care choices! It's also a pearl for learning how to listen to your body to prevent alot of those self-induced, over use injuries so common to the average athlete.
