4-0 out of 5 stars Appropriate to the athlete
I have not read this book, but the reviews indicate it is for the current athlete with an injury. One reviewer unfairly slammed Marilyn Moffat's book since it was not right for him. I read and evaluated her Physical Therapy book from the library as a guide for my 84 year old father. He was a super fit elderly sculler who wore out his beach volleyball playing granddaughters double sculling for 2 hours at a shot, and was in the hospital for 14 months recovering from surgery to reduce intracranial bleeding, which was followed by seizures, pneumonia, and kidney failure. He essentially woke up a year later a live but terribly weak shadow of himself. He needs rehabilitation from, literally zero strength. He is learning to walk, talk, and eat, and more. He's gone from feeling like 40 to feeling like a hundred, but with no long slide of good memories. Very discouraging. Her book will help me start him back to a pleasant final years, from a zero base. I will buy that book to help him. I may be able to use this book for myself, but he could not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exactly what I needed . . .
An excellent book. At the age of 40 I pay for my active lifestyle with some aches and pains; this book is helping me live pain free. Unlike many PT type books, Levy is specific with his advice, not making you waste your time on dozens of stretches and exercises. He'll lead you directly to what you need to know to fix the problem. Other books seem shy about recommending specific exercises for specific problems; Levy's not. I ordered several of these types of books at once and eventually resold all the others. This is the one I kept.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCEPTIONAL MATERIAL ON FITNESS & SPORTS INJURIES
Alan Levy has done a fantastic job in putting together so much in one book. It has nearly everything an athlete requires to not only stay in shape but also treating all kinds of injuries from little niggles to those that need surgery. And its all been bonded together in a very organized and methodical manner.

To begin with Dr. Levy emphasizes the importance of warming up and stretching before and after workouts and shows how to do this. Next, he explains about nutrition for athletes. After that he lays out the benefits of and what it really means to stay healthy. This is followed by First-Aid for sports.

Starting with the fifth chapter he provides detailed information about what to know about the various parts of the body, their intricacies, and how they are used in sports and precisely what occurs with them when we feel pain or discomfort. For example, chapter 10 is about the Thigh and Hip, Chapter 6 for the Shoulder, and so on. In addition, he suggests various ways of diagnosing injuries correctly and how best to treat them. Whether an economical ready-made arch support will work, or one must see a qualified physician for a particular problem, Dr. Levy seems one not to miss a trick.

Then there is a chapter each on a specific sport and the most likely injuries to take place in every one of those and what all can be done to prevent them but if they do happen, then how to treat them. From Baseball to Running, Golf to Skiing, it has everything.

At the end he also suggests what to look for in a Sports Specialist.

Its only drawback is that understanding some of the material can be a daunting task as the lay person does not possess the expertise of Dr. Levy in Sports medicine.

And last but not the least, my knee ailment got cured courtesy of following the treatment plan outlined in the Sports Injury Handbook. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I and any other hockey player needed
I had an idea of what I thought nutrition and being in shape was as a hockey player.....until I read this book. I bought this book looking to improve my game and that is exactly what has happened. Peter Twist takes his experience as a National Hockey League conditioning coach and gives us the same advice that he gives the pros. I strongly recommend this book to coaches and all players serious about taking their game to a higher level

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't found a better source for ice hockey conditioning
Peter Twist covers all aspects of conditioning to play hockey regardless of the level of play. He dedicates a significant amount of text to youth hockey players. This book is an essential read for youth hockey coaches, although it can be best applied to high school and above. Athletes that can adopt his methods, including nutritional guidance will have the edge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Complete Conditioning for Ice Hockey
This book is fantastic. The book is very complete, from beginning to end on the training and conditioning aspect. Not only did it include the fitness portion, but also nutrition, which I was surprised to see.

My only complaint is that each and every exersize should have photos. Most do, but not all of them. There are some exersizes that are not 100% clear on the proper technique.

Other than that it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Myriad of Exercises
Peter Twist says it right in the beginning, there is nothing quite like hockey. That makes it really tough to get in shape to play. Even if you're already in great shape, you're game could improve dramatically if you got into hockey shape. That is exactly what Twist tries to do.

The book is organized in such a way that the later chapters build upon the previous chapters. He begins by talking about energy and how we burn fuels different ways when playing hockey. Then he goes into stretching and strength training. If you have ever spent any time around a gym, you'll already know how to perform these movements. The payoff for this book is the plyometric. These are techniques used to help improve your agility and explosive movements. Let's face it, the team that can consistently get to the puck first usually wins. These exercises will provide you with a quick jump giving you an extra step over your opponent and the puck.

Twist writes simply, and his instructions are easy to follow. He uses photos generously when trying to explain complex movements. Both on-ice and off-ice exercises are provided so you don't have to be at the rink or have precious ice time to get into shape.

4-0 out of 5 stars good book

I was excited to finally receive the book, and see that it lived up to my expectations. As a resident I had a copy of Mark Miller's review book in my backpack at all times. When I saw that he had authored an atlas of sports medicine I placed my order before the edition was published.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on the Money
I purchased this book as a "sequel" to another Liz Applegate book, Eat Smart, Play Hard. This is a must read for anyone interested in performing his/her best at a favorite physical activity or simply desiring a more healthy lifestyle. Since making a few changes to my diet I have lost weight and improved my performance during my endurance activities. What you eat and when you eat it truly matters. Like anything else, there is no magic here. You won't instantly smoke all your buddies on your next group bike ride if you make some changes to your diet. However, you can maximize your current abilities and set the stage for more physical gains. I have never felt better both during and post exercise. No fad diets will be found here. What you will find is a common sense approach to a lifestyle that is centered around healthy eating and exercise. Ms. Applegate is both encouraging of a healthy diet and realistic enough to know people need to have "comfort" foods every once in awhile. This book stands above the "fad diet of the week" chaos cluttering the bookstores. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Examples ... No Backing
Let's start out with the good: there are lots of exercises, many of them creative, to give the athlete or coach new tools to use in their program. Michael Boyle brings lots of experience to the table through his involvement at his training facility.

But I was also very dissappointed with this book as it has no research backing and is opinionated. The entire book has only has 7 references, none of them being research articles.

Boyle states that functional training is based on the "latest scientific research" yet there is no research presented in the book at all. He states that he wanted it to be simple and to be able to be read and used by diverse people. I am not sure if he purposely left out research or not but it is research that truly tells me if something works or not. My conclusion with his findings are that he derived them from his experiences and from the books he cites in his references.

Boyle also seems to hold a grudge against exercise physiologists and is in love with physical therapists. He concludes that problems with top amateur and professional athletes' training regimens in the 80's were due to the dumbfounded exercise physiologists that teams employed. Not only is it harsh to generalize to all exercise physiologists, it's also just not right. On the contrary, all throughout the book though he quotes numerous physical therapists about how revolutionary their ideas are.

The book has plenty of pictures of exercises which is great. Unfortunately, photos showing action or movement have this ghost figure overtop of the regular figure that make the whole picture hard to decipher. I have no idea what some of the exercises are because the motion picture obscures the regular photo leaving it useless to me.

On pg. 86, Boyle addresses the problem of when to train abs. He states that some people argue for training abs at the end of the workout because otherwise you would be fatiguing muscles important in stability. He disagrees with this but gives no reason why but continues on with what he believes is the best progression.

Another opinion that is brought up is how athletes focus on "mirror muscles." I guess you can't both look good and perform well.

Overall, I think the book could have been better. I think Boyle pretty much just wrote about his experiences throughout his career without thinking about any backing for his thoughts. Many thoughts are incomplete and opinioned with not much backing. The exercises are great for incorporating into a program for diversity but I was not sold on how great the performance enhancing aspects of functional training are from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for Athletes
If you're a sports athlete, don't train like a bodybuilder. Michael Boyle does an excellent job of explaining the difference and why it's so important. He gives easy to follow instructions to assess your current functional strength and identify your weaknesses. He then describes how to evaluate your sport and consider your strengths and weaknesses so you can develop an individualized training program to improve your sports performance. He gives instructions on how to begin and how to advance, with lots of pictures and detailed instructions on how to do each exercise. Really an excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great training book for anyone who wants to become better
Michael Boyle has done a great job with this book. This is the best and most informative book on the market. The exercises and progressions are easy to follow. I strongly recommend this book. It goes nicely with Gray Cook's "Athletic Body in Balance".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have never written a review before but this book was so good I wanted to make others aware. Finally someone has written a book about functional training that makes sense and shows practical progressions.
I could never understand why I was always pulling my hamstrings on the court in spite of doing tons of machine leg curls. This book does a great job of explaining why using machines make you good at lifting a lot of weight on that machine, but doesn't help your athletic performance. Excellent explanations without bogging you down with technical jargon. The exercise progressions are clearly explained. The only small deficiency in my mind is that I would like to see a healthy shoulders section (although he does touch on this in various places).
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the most current techniques in athletic training. Far, far better than Rosemarie Gionta Alfieri's mess of a book and much more accesible and practical than Gambetta's Guide to Functional Training. So far I haven't seen anything else like it on the market. I hope there will be more books like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Functional Training for Sports
I am currentley a high school strength coach who has been in the field for 17 years. I have integrated many of the exercises in this book into our program. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best book about resistance training
As an exercise science major in college and an avid weight trainer, I find this book to be the definitive source for both my academic work and recreational activity. It contains a great deal of the science of weight training. I would not recommend this book to a beginner nor to someone who just works out for the hell of it. One should have substantial knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology before reading this book, as well as possess true desire to better understand the science of resistance exercise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious Nutrition
As much as people dont think that nutrition is important to the serious athlete, they are wrong. One of the keys unlocking your potential is what you put into your body. Before i had read this book, i had a few ideas/thoeries about what i put into my body and what foods i should eat and this book backed my ideas and gave me new ones. This book is one of my favorites, and serious athletes should follow it to a T.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals for Success
Dr. Benardot's text, Nutrition for Serious Athletes, is essential for both coach and athlete. It lays out in clear and precise fashion what is required, with regard to nurtition, for athletic success. Crucial topics, for athletic success, that are comprehensively discussed include: proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, meals for anaerobic and aerobic activities, and timing of meals. What also adds to the immense value of the text is the massive index of food sources of essential nutrients located at the end of the book. If you want to achieve your best athletic results, i.e., to maximize and actualize your true athletic potential, then this text is for you. It will not only show you how to fuel your body for the particular athletic you are training for and competing in, but also help you to understand why you should be fueling your body in that particular maner. All in all, this is an excellant text for the athlete, coach, or even the individual who just wants to have a clear understanding of proper nutrition.

5-0 out of 5 stars nutrtion for serious athletes
Best book I've read for the "semi serious" athlete. Although I don't compete anymore, I'm 74, I thought the info. for nourishing food and meals very helpful to me . Also,I never realized that hydrating after exercise was also important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundametals for Sucess
Dan Benardot's book 'Nutrition for Serious Athletes' is a must for the coach or athltete who desires to cover every base when it comes to athletic performance. Fundamental topics discussed include proper nutrition, hydration, supplements, timming of meals, good diets/bad diets, and sport specific diets. But what also adds to the immense value of Dan Benardot's book is the excellant index of meal plans, and nutritional values of foods.

What is of great importance in gaining knowledge is the issue of authority. It is something that is very important to me, for there are many individuals who claim to actually know something about athletic performance, yet they lack proper training and education. It is clear that Dan Benardot is not one of those individuals. Not only does he have PhD and RD distinction, but the text is also clear, logical, insightful and based on scientific evidence.

Terrance Grant

5-0 out of 5 stars Benardot is a serious author!
I have had the distinct pleasure of reviewing the newest book by Dr. Dan Benardot. His knowledge of nutrition and sport far exceeds his peers. This book is unique in that we now have a book written by someone who not only has the education but also the experience to give us very specific insights into working with "serious" athletes. All too often, educators will write about subjects they may know something about, yet have little to no experience. This is not the case with Dan Benardot. As the Nutrition Consultant and member of the Athlete Wellness Program for USA Gymnastics during the time when gold medals were the norm, Dan gives us the kind of practical skills necessary to work with these special athletes.

I highly recommend this text to anyone who is an athlete and to those who work with athletes. It is a MUST for everyone's book shelf.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great introductory plyometric book
This book is worth the price ($14) alone just for the plyometric routines in the back of the book. The description and science behind plyometrics are excellent and easy to read. My only complaint about the book is that some of the exercises are hard to grasp from the given instructions.

I knew of several lower body plyometric moves, but the amount of upper body ones in the book are impressive. You will need a medicine ball for most of the upper body ones, as well as plyo boxes for some of the lower body ones, but in the book they show you how to make them. This is a definite plus. I also like the suggested readings in the back, which will help if I ever need to go more indepth into a certain aspect of plyometrics.

Overall, this book is worth the money, and will help you in any sport, to become more explosive. Just make sure to study the instructions on the moves carefully, to make sure you are doing them right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Start to Plyometrics
High-Powered Plyometrics is an excellent book for those striving to achieve maximum power from their fitness program of choice. This book gives plenty of information about the human physiology, necessary to understand how the body reacts to physical conditioning. It then smoothly incorporates a detailed outline of the how's and why's that make plyometrics work. The authors of the book share their accumulation of research with the reader to grant him the ability of self-evaluation. This book is amazing, it even gives you outlines for building your own jump boxes from scratch, should you be inclined to do so.

You can learn a lot from this book, since there is a wealth of research thrown into this book. Though, I'd also recommend getting Jumping into Plyometrics, by Dr. Donald Chu, in addition to this book. Chu's book, in my opinion, is no better or worse than High-Powered Plyometrics. Both books have their advantages over the other. The main advantages: High-Powered Plyometrics has a lot more routines already outlined for specific sports; Jumping into Plyometrics has outlined routines involving complex training (basically, Plyometrics + Weight Lifting).

Good luck in your quest for power.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great supplement to power training
If you are interested in improving your performance in almost any sport, plyometrics is sure to help you. This book is a gold mine of specific information and training programs that will supercharge your workouts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous in principle and in practice
A mediocre book on a form of exercise that is unproductive and dangerous. The book is hardly comprehensive and some of the routines and ideas are downright untrue. Give this book (and plyometrics) a miss. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great fundamentals and motivational
I have just finished this book before my club season is starting and I highly recommend it. The book applies to many areas of volleyball from youth to college/national and from men to women.

If you are looking for a beginners coaching book that outlines the skills in detail with a bunch of drills, this is NOT the book for you.

The caliber of contributors is excellent and the chapters were put together nicely...it flowed from front to back. I've played and coached for many years. I learned a few new things in this book, but I also felt like the book gave me a different perspective on areas I already knew. I will probably read/review this book prior to my club seasons.

There were a few graphics/demonstrations. There were great pics illustrating Conditioning and Stretching. There were a few sketches of attacking and digging. Jim Coleman did a nice job on Statistics. ... Read more

Even if you are an experienced athlete yourself, and former power lifter (like me), this book is great for the research it presents about children and weightlifting, and for the organization of the material. I found the medicine ball portion particularly helpful. Very good pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars An OUTSTANDING book for any swimmer
This book has been extrodinarily helpful to me. I am a former beach lifeguard and thought that my freestyle was pretty good until I read the author's extremely clear, detailed descriptions of how it feels to swim correctly. I now realize that I what I used to do was really akin to stabbing through the water, rather than gliding over it as I do now. I've been using the drills and workouts in the book for only about 2 months and already I've brought my stroke count (on 25 meters) from 22 when I started to 10-11 now. I expect that this improvement will continue as I progress farther into the drill sequence. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to swim for fun, fitness, or competition, regardless of their current ability. Swimming is one of those sports where one's technique can always be improved further.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very easy to understand and put to use. I see the light!
I decided to try and swim for a regular fitness routine and since I have not swum regularly (and never competively) I thought I needed to take the opportunity to brush up/work on technique to get the most out of my workout. I swam a couple of times before I got the book and once I got the book and put just a few of the skills into effect I could not only see the logic in the technique but I could also see a difference in my swimming. It is a very worth-while investment in a routine I want to continue for a long time. I'm not crazy about all the drills (I understand they are there for a purpose and to teach you the proper techniques), but I can't get over the goober effect I feel like it would have while at the pool (I do perform some of them). I'm not reaping all the benefits as I would if I would faithfully practice all of them , but I figure I will gradually incorporate more as I continue. I think this book will also be helpful in teaching my children in case they don't get a swim coach who believes in swimming smart. I've been swimming now for 3 days a week for about 5 weeks and I'm really getting into the routine and loving the workout!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best book I've read on swimming.
instead of just work-outs and the benefits of the swimming, this book actually helps to improve technique - in a step by step guide.
It has all the workouts etc that other books have.

As I siad - the best I've read - wish I'd had it years ago...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book on freestyle swimming
This book is excellent. I read it in three days and it is a wonderful source of information about swimming the right way. I am a beginner/intermediate level swimmer who has had some formal instruction but never was on any team. Part I of the Book explains in detail how to swim in the most efficient way. It is well written, clear and full of wonderful humor. Part II gives you plenty of workouts organized by color (green, blue, purple, yellow, orange, and the red zones) based on duration and intensity. The workouts include lots of drills which I feel will almost invariably make your freestyle stroke better. The book does focus exclusively on the freestyle stroke. Part III tells you how to set up your own year-round swimming program.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Swimmer's "Manual"
Not only did I enjoy this book,I also use it as a manual. The work-outs are simple and not confussing for a beginner swimmer.I should have bought this book when I was first forced in the pool due to an injury.I understand drills more by reading the color coded work-outs,witch are essential to great swimming techinque. Its also a coaching tool from beginners to fittness swimmers;and you never know.....a future olympician swimmer ! ... Read more

Book Description

Balance and mobility disorders resulting in falls among the elderly population pose a serious public health problem in the United States. Costs associated with falls among the elderly are estimated to range from $75 billion to $100 billion. Coupling this statistic with the fact that adults over the age of 65 represent the fastest-growing population in the United States suggests an immediate need for activity programs specifically designed to reduce physical frailty and the rising incidence of falls among the older adult population. FallProof! is the first comprehensive and structured balance and mobility training program to address these needs.

Traditionally, exercise programs designed to address physical frailty and falls have adopted one-dimensional approaches of aerobic exercise, resistance training, or flexibility training. However, research has shown that falls occur as a result of multiple risk factors, both internal and external, and the interplay of multiple body systems. FallProof! presents a multidimensional approach that systematically manipulates the individual’s internal capabilities, the goals of the task being performed, and the environment in which the task is performed. This approach has been field tested with considerable success by fitness instructors and rehabilitative specialists working in a range of instructional settings.

FallProof! offers the following benefits:
• Flexibility. Program participants can engage in group activities that take into account their individual abilities so that the program is not too easy or too difficult for them.
• Guidance. FallProof! illustrates the easiest and safest ways to present each of the program’s exercise components, addressing issues from safety concerns to the best ways to offer feedback to participants.
• Supplemental materials. Reproducible health, assessment, and safety questionnaires help program instructors gather crucial information and save time and energy.
• Results. The FallProof! program has been proven to reduce the risk of falling in participants who’ve completed one or more rotations of the program.

FallProof! is divided into three parts. Part I provides an introduction to the body systems that contribute to balance and mobility and common age-related changes occurring in each of these systems. It also identifies the multifactorial causes of falls and describes the common medical conditions (arthritis, joint replacement surgery, osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes) and medications known to adversely affect balance and mobility. Part II provides suggestions on balance assessments and details the core program. And finally, Part III describes how to incorporate contemporary motor learning principles to foster optimal learning, develop lesson plans, organize the classroom environment for optimal safety and efficiency, and communicate with program participants.

FallProof! is a practical manual that blends the latest theory into practical applications. It will prove a valuable resource for physical activity instructors and health care professionals working with older adults in physical activity settings, and it will also be helpful for assessing and designing programs to improve mobility and balance. ... While most fitness professionals recognize the benefits of exercise for individuals with chronic diseases and disabilities, many avoid prescribing exercise programs for such individuals because of a lack of practical, easy-to-apply information on the subject.

Now, thanks to ACSM’s Exercise Management for Persons With Chronic Diseases and Disabilities, clear and concise guidance is available for developing exercise programs for individuals with special health considerations. This one-of-a-kind book covers a wide range of chronic diseases and disabilities and for each condition provides the following information:

Each chapter is written by a specialist who provides both theoretical and practical information on his or his field of expertise. And while it’s not an all-encompassing reference on exercise testing and prescription, the book does provide clinical exercise personnel, health club personnel, personal trainers, and others with an excellent framework in which to guide individuals with disabilities, chronic diseases, or multiple conditions. ...
