Book Description

This one-of-a-kind resource brings together all three "gastrointestinal" organ systems into one textbook of surgical and medical disorders of the GI tract, liver, billiary tract and pancreas. With a strong foundation in morphology, it offers a comprehensive and practical guide to the interpretation of endoscopic biopsies and resection specimens of the alimentary tract and related solid organs. In addition, chapters outline the current clinical approach to management and treatment options, wherever applicable, particularly regarding screening and surveillance recommendations for preneoplastic disorders. You will also find that diseases integrate key pathologic findings with relevant cytologic and genetic information necessary in order to establish an accurate diagnosis. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars poorly organized with small photographs
I would personally not recommend this textbook for the following reasons: The chapters are organized in a confusing way with chapters organized not based on organ but on disease type. Certain chapters are certainly better than others with the liver, pancreas and extrabiliary tract being particulary better than those covering the small and large intestine. The photographs are in certain cases adequate and in others are too small and hard to interpret. Overall, I would not buy this book given the high price but may consider using it as an ancillary text ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book to relieve the residency anxiety!
I found this book greatly helpful. It saved me in the beginning of my pathology residency! It relieved my residency anxiety. I think this book is indispensible for pathology residents. It helps you to learn specimen grossing. The table of the special stains is great. You may never find such a table in another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent practical guide to pathology
This text provides an excellent practical guide to pathologic dissection and case submission. The pointers on tumor staging and important items for the final diagnosis of specimens helps one prepare the final case report. An excellent guide for pathology residents, pathology assistants, and pathologists alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely handy
This is a book that all residents should have with them for quick references in gross and microscopic surgical anatomy reporting. To my knowledge it is the most comprehensive book that caters to the needs of a young pathologist. I particularly like the very concise sample dictations and the relevant facts on tumor staging needed. I wish this book was published at the beginning of my residency, it would have made everthing more enjoyable. ... Read more

The authour has done a very good job of conveying the essentials of thoracic imaging in a easy to read and well illustrated single volume book. 4-0 out of 5 stars Surgery Resident Review
This book is designed for surgical residents. Medical students should do well with a student oriented text and the little Surgical Recall.

Residents on the other hand will find this to be a useful review especially before the ABSITE.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is what your memory needs!
This is one of the best investment in medical books that I have made. I am in 3rd year now and have accumulated heaps of COMPREHENSIVE books that I have only ever just flipped through. Since buying "Advanced Surgical Recall", I have used it every single time a topic pops up in my surgical term. It includes topics on General Surgery as well as Surgical Specialties, plus other useful background information. There is also some anatomy, with occasional drawings to emphasize. Admittedly, some of the questions are too advanced for me at this stage (I also love my "Surgical Recall" but that's another story, by the way the 2 books are complementary and in no way exclude the usefulness of the other), but the majority are just what I need! I anticipate I will find it completely relevant for my 4th year exam next year. The 2 column format with questions on the left and answers on the right is ideal for testing those neurons...and the bookmark that comes with the book is absolutely indispensable. Basically it emphasizes what you would need to know and not more. The only thing is...I wish there is a version with metric units, any references to fluid and electrolyte measurements are totally meaningless to me here is Australia. I will write them in I think. Of course you will still need a proper surgical text, admittedly I have written in a few additional points in the book that I thought were important from reading other texts. But I had my surgical exam just today and the use of this book in revision was just invaluable. Not to mention those times when you do not feel like even glancing at your big surgery text, or when you have about 10 minutes spare while waiting in the car or for the pasta to cook....just attempting a few questions will make you feel constructive! This book has started a craze in me to check out all the other books in the "Recall" series...oh dear looks like an expensive year for me! ... Read more

For the 20th edition of this classic text, Silen has expanded his discussion of the role of CT scans in diagnosing abdominal pain and cut the material on such obsolete procedures or nosologic entities as abdominal paracentesis, pyplyositis, and Bornholm's disease. The book continues to be the outstanding guide to the difficult task of diagnosing and deciding how to manage acute abdominal pain, where decisions must be made quickly and mistakes can kill patients. More generally, it remains the most venerable of all texts on the art and science of bedside diagnosis. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the first book to read on abdominal problems
One of the most influential medical texts ever. Cope's work gets only more relevant with increasing fragmentation of care. I would argue the book is especially useful for those NOT planning a career in surgery. The work is concise, accurate, and filled with memorable language. If you spend half an hour on the appendicitis section you should be equipped to make the diagnosis correctly. Other sections are equally good, as Dr. Silen has the sense not to fix what is not broken.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for every medical doctor...surgeon or not...
I readed this book the first time 26 years ago, and it gave me a "sixth" sence as a suregon. Today I, as orthopaedical surgeon still have in my mind the essentials of the Dr. Cope's master-piece. I think it must be as a duthy ("a must be read book") in every serious medical school, to teach alumnii the surgeon's mind...even if the alumnii goes to clinical areas later on.

Anybody who sees patients should be familiar with this book.

This book is a source of valuable information for anyone who is searching for the facts about hip surgery. The information in this book can help to answer questions about total hip replacement, revisions, hip resurfacing, preparations for surgery as well as post surgery. It also includes information on doctors who are performing the hip resurfacing surgery.

The introduction, by Dr. Koen De Smet, along with a chapter on questions and answers can bring forth clarity to the reader.Dr. Koen De Smet is one of the pioneers of the hip resurfacing surgery, and considered by many to be one of the foremost hip surgeons in the world.

When Peggy Gabriel was told that her scheduled total hip replacement surgery would drastically change her active lifestyle, and that she would be facing future revisions, she desperately searched for another alternative. Thus, she entered a labyrinth of discovery, intertwined with medical and insurance issues that would ultimately lead her to a satisfactory solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Answer to Those in Need of Hip Replacement
A great book to give the prospect THR (total hip replacement) candidate an

concise, and very comforting to the prospective patient. A must read for
people who are facing a THR procedure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hip Resurfacing Hip Replacement
I would like to share with you an astonishing book who could transformed your life if you are in needs to have hip surgery as the author's life was transformed by a bilateral Hip Resurfacing, a promising surgical technique of the hip, but remained unknown, unaccessible and unaffordable. You will read a disturbing biographical story marked by a story of uncompromised choices.

I have a great interest in this book. I had a hip resurfacing 08/09/2003 after 10 years aching lumbar pain which radiated to my left knee, and this awsome book was released at the moment l returned home. I instantly ordered. It. l received the book around diner time 10 days later and l read it through before supper, and l have read it over and over since. Once you open the first page it is impossible to stop reading.

The author of the book reveals her ``search realty`. She was told by a specialist that she had spinal fusion. She was also told that she was in need hip surgery to both of her hips. She found out that deteroriation of her hips and the manner in which she was being forced to walk was harming her lower back. and responsible of the eminent danger of spinal fusion. She needed hip surgery quickly to avoid spinal deterioration. She was handled out an appointment for bilateral hip replacement and spinal fusion but the doctor avoided to tell her the issue that Total Hip Replacement surgery was very restrictive and invasing surgery hard to revise, which would have put an end to her career as Pilate instructor. She however determined to ask a second opinion for her spine and she was told that if she gets her hips fixed quickly her back will straight out and she will see a great improvement and the problem of her spine should be resolved.

The authour learnt about hip resurfacing by joining the Surfacehippy Discussion Board and read all she could lay her hand on. She came to the conclusion that Hip Resurfacing less invasive offers more range of motion and revision is a lot easier. It is amazing to see how she could get all the information through reading and exchange and support from this amazing discussion board. She choosed to have hip Hip Resurfacing. Her insurance refused to pay for hip resurfacing because this surgery is experimental and not approved by the DFA. Hip Replacement already approved by her insurance, but she choosed Hip Resurfacing, but had to be paid out of her pocket..

We are moved by the tragic condition of her spine, back and hips that could not be more critical. She is under the extreme urgent pressure to have her bilateral resurfacing done the most quickly to avoid definitive and irreversible degeneration of her spine, back and hips..

Two main reasons seemed to have guided her decision where she will go and to whom she will entrust for her resurfacing. The first was a financial.one. She will go to belgium because the cost in Belgium were one third of the cost in the United States. She was blessed to have been able to borrow the money. Tthe second was Dr De Smet who had the reputation of taking the tough cases with success.

The testimonies throughout the book are awsome. The skill of the author to put in words how she discovered the tragic degenerescense of her spine, back and hips is unsurpassable. The author graciously shares how she tooked the best radical heartrending decisions for her global health without compromise whatever was the cost. in a manner that the reader is chalenged to take the best decision by analizing every aspect when his health is at stake in order to be able to make the best decision.

This book is bearer of hope in midst of adversity when one has to choose the type of hip surgery he needs. Resurfacing is not magic, we are reminded that it will go up to the level we devote ourselves to do our exercises, and also our astonishing warning if we are tempted to neglect them. The reader will find in this book the necessary informations to take a rational decision. This book was written with the contribution of Dr De Smet, one of the rising star of resurfacing and gives to the book a additional credibility.

l have read this book over and over an the more l read it the more l appreciate it, though it makes me so sad to find out how much author suffered. The history of her fight will be an inspiration for many people. Thank you so much to spread out the word and l'm sure that by reading this book many people will be able to renew their normal activities they were forced to abandon. l wonder if this book could not one day be followed by true story seen on T V.

I hope the review will trigger your interest for this book which aims to spread the good news of hip resurfacing. It is also my prayer that this book encourages you to make the right choice if you are in needs of hip surgery.

Best Regards

Richard Thivierge. ... Read more
