Book Description

For the millions of animal enthusiasts in America, here’s a heartwarming collection of tales by veterinarian Robert Sharp that relate the joys and misadventures of being an animal doctor in small-town U.S.A. With humor and compassion, No Dogs in Heaven? portrays the great and not-so-great characteristics of human and animal nature, all infused by a lovable veterinarian’s belief that indeed, there are dogs in heaven.

Included is the telling of Sharp’s first day as a rookie veterinarian nervously preparing to inject a needle into a one-ton Holstein bull; finding a rash on a cute puppy whose lovely young owner bared her breasts to ask his opinion of a similar skin ailment; treating a vicious dog whose violent owner had stabbed it with a knife, only to treat the same dog two years later—now a sweet and gentle pet of an adoptive family; and caring for a kitten struck by a car who survived amputations of both right legs, somehow learned to walk, earned the name "Lefty," and was taken in by a family who loved him.

In the vein of James Herriot’s compelling stories, this charming, eccentric, and comic book is sure to strike a chord with readers everywhere. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars No Dogs in Heaven by cub writer Sharp flies high
Dr. Sharp is one lucky guy.I have no other explanantion for his obvious love of his job, love of people (even the difficult ones), and his ability to communicate these characteristics in an amusing and engaging way.I picked up this book expecting James Herriot warmth and was not disappointed. However, Dr. Sharp also displays an edge (hmmm) that keeps things from being too mushy.I can almost picture myself driving around in his work truck on the way to the next call eating the DQ dog off the bag.

This is a great read... straight through or in little chunks...by yourself or to your 5 year old.I'll be watching for more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heaven on Earth
Rob Sharp has been our veterinarian ever since we moved to Hillsboro eight years ago and I bought 8 copies of No Dogs In Heaven? without having read it first,on faith that his stories would not disappoint. Bless his heart, he signed all eight of them for me, writing a personal message in each. (I won't tell you what he wrote in my copy!) I can't tell you when I have enjoyed a book more than this one, and the recipients of the other books have echoed my feelings exactly. I laughed and cried and hated to see the book end. When I asked about a sequel, he replied, "Well, it took me 25 years to write this one...." I have to live long enough for that!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I WANT MORE BOOKS FROM THIS GUY!
A wonderful book...I couldn't put it down.I want more to read.I laughed, I cried, I learned a lot!I feel I know this man through this compassionate, wonderful book.I grew up in southern Ohio and found the book to be a wonderful read historically. It's a book I will read again and again.I have recommended this book to everyone owning a pet or not ever owning a pet. It's a good read for everyone. Please give me more!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An "I'm Glad I Read This" Book
In the interests of full disclosure, I've known the author since he was knee-high to a grasshopper. So when I learned the book he'd written about his experiences as a rural veterinarian was about to be published, I was thrilled. That is, until the thought struck: What on earth would I say to him if it was awful?

What a waste of worry that was! From the first page on, I was hooked; I didn't put it down till I'd reached the index a couple of hours later. The well-scripted vignettes are alternately funny, heart-warming and sweet -- but never saccharine. He is, after all, a working veterinarian; and dealing with the illnesses and injuries of animals (as well their often cantankerous owners) isn't always pretty.

This book, in my opinion, is a don't-miss for anyone who loves animals and learning about the foibles of human nature. Rob has said many times that he considers himself lucky to have one of the "world's great jobs" -- and perhaps above all else, that belief comes through loud and clear. Only one question remains: Hey, Doc, when will the sequel be finished? ... Read more

Book Description

This book covers all aspects of toxicology, including toxic diseases of large animals, small animals, and exotic pets. It provides key information on how poisons affect the body, how the body responds to a foreign substance, how poisonings are diagnosed, and how poisonings are treated.

Coverage includes every organ system of every species of animal with details on each body system's susceptibility to poison. Poisons affect animals differently depending on species, breed, age, gender, health status, and reproductive status. This resource addresses these differences, allowing the veterinarian to determine the class of toxicant, the mechanism of action, and the proper course of treatment. If confronted with an unknown poison, the information in this book will assist the veterinarian in formulating a list of potential poisons based on the clinical signs that the animal is exhibiting, and in choosing the appropriate tests to narrow the list to one or a few possible poisons.

* Most comprehensive toxicology book available
* Written in a user-friendly style that makes it easy to master the content
* Covers poisonings in both large and small domestic animals
* The Principles of Toxicology section provides comprehensive coverage of concepts & terminology, toxicokinetics, treatments, and regulatory information

5-0 out of 5 stars It is much more inclusive than the title suggests
I met the first edition 30 years ago in the U. of Illinois library, when I was in graduate school. Now, a full fledged medical and veterinary parasitologist, I had a second chance and . . . I just had to have it! Not because it was necessary to my work but because I remembered it as a jewel of a book. I hesitated a bit because the price was kind of steep for just a memento. Boy, but what a memento! The tight text and tiny letters are rarely interrupted by illustrations, and these are usually photographs; of only average quality, they are of exceptional content. It does not cover all the comon parasitic infections (the way they treat them, it would take an encyclopedia to do so!) but only the major ones. The survey of each infection, however, goes much farther than one would expect for a book on "wild mammals." It reviews (and references) a large part of the recent literature as it applies to any host; wild, domestic, or human. I found that it quickly gained a place among my favorite references. If you are interested in Parasitology at all, you MUST get it. You can't afford to wait another 30 years for the next edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Equine Reproduction
This book covers every aspect of equine reproduction from the preperation of a stallion prior to the start of the breeding season all the way through to the care and management of the mare and foal post partum. 2-0 out of 5 stars Usefulness depends upon area studying
This book was not nearly as helpful as I expected it to be. The photographs and drawings seemed like they would be really helpful. However, I found it very confusing to try to figure out which picture corresponded to what my specimen actually looked like. It was most helpful for muscles, and least helpful for nerves and vessels. It is also very time consuming to look up the particular item and then flip through many pages looking for a picture that shows your item of interest clearly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely valuable learning tool. Highly Recommended!
I am a currently a second-year veterinary student working as a teaching assistant for the first-year anatomy class. This book has served as an invaluable source of information to me. The color photographs supplemented by explanatory diagrams make this the best reference book I have found available on canine/feline anatomy. Highly recommended for first year veterinary students.

It's every pet owner's nightmare: suddenly your four-legged friend isn't breathing. What to do? There is no 911 for pets, so it's up to you to save a life. The First Aid Companion for Dogs & Cats is a straightforward guide that covers both major problems--CPR, heat stroke, and strangulation--and minor ones, such as swollen tails, ingrown nails, and flea allergies. Beginning with simple tests and explanations of general care issues like dehydration examinations and triage, this guide then moves on to an alphabetical listing of every possible situation, from arrow wounds to worms.

The individual sections are good for both general reading and instant assistance. Each one starts with a notice of when to call the vet--immediately, the same day, or as needed. It also lists what items from your pet's medicine chest will be needed, which may include anything from corn syrup to towels and panty hose. The information that follows this simple checklist is divided into "do this now," "special situations," "follow-up care," and "the best approach." Whenever necessary, simple sketches are included to help show proper technique, such as fashioning an instant muzzle from a pair of nylons, or how to cover a dog's head in case of an ear-flap injury. Relying frequently on common household items like antihistamines, turkey basters, Gatorade, and plastic wrap, this guide assumes most of us won't have special medical training or supplies and focuses on very specific and simple methods of helping your pet achieve the best possible care. Even more importantly, many suggestions are included on prevention of accidents--isn't it easier to get that window screen repaired than to rush your kitty to the vet after a bad fall?--Jill Lightner ... What do an ironing board, clingy plastic food wrap and a condom have in common? In an emergency medical situation, all can be pressed into service to help save the life of your pet.

Surprising, innovative and definitely useful, such information makes a new book on first aid for dogs and cats an essential part of every pet lover's reference library...

"The First Aid Companion for Dogs and Cats" is the first book I've seen that makes a pet owner a full member of the team when it comes to saving the life of a pet. Along with the number of the nearest emergency clinic, this book is something every pet lover should keep on hand, just in case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Five Stars
Excellent book and good for quick reference. Has at home medicines that an animal can and cannot take. I would definately recommend this for any animal lover or owner.

5-0 out of 5 stars hero, not sicko!
This is a wonderful resource full of helpful, potentially life-saving techniques that every pet owner should know. It was especially useful in convincing my (now ex) wife Susie that yes, you can perform cpr on a cat. I can understand that the situation must have looked odd to her when she walked into the room, but she didn't have to fly off the handle and tell her mother I was "making out" with Rosco (our Russian Blue). Thank you Ms. Shojai, for helping restore some order to my house and clearing my name. This book is highly recommended (cat cpr pictures worth the price alone!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful resource every owner should have
This large and handy paperback tells any pet owner what to do in the first critical minutes after discovering an injury or other emergency. The advice is clear, specific and experience-based. The author is a popular writer on pets, and she is supported by expert advisors and the experience of some 80 veterinarians.

Cat owners, incidentally, should not be put off by the fact that the book covers both cats and dogs. This in no way distracts from the coverage of feline problems and, in fact, it broadens the scope and inclusiveness in the portrayal of many conditions and injuries.

Introductory chapters set the stage for the specific remedial actions discussed in the rest of the book. The contents of a first aid kit are spelled out in full, plus there is a list of human medicines and how they should be used (or not used) for cats and dogs. Tests and vital signs for assessing the seriousness of a problem are discussed. Basic first aid techniques are explained including homemade muzzles and restraints; artificial respiration and CPR; cleaning wounds; bandages and splints; transporting an injured animal; and, giving medications. Finally, this preliminary material ends with a 12-page listing of symptoms, setting forth likely or possible causes, and the pages where they are covered.

The bulk of the book contains over 150 sections, alphabetically arranged, ranging from 'Abdominal Wounds' to 'Worms.' Each section explains when to call the vet, what supplies or medicines may be needed, what actions to take at once and what follow-up care will be necessary. These sections are direct and to the point. Good drawings illustrate some of the harder-to-describe procedures. Throughout the book, brand names are used whenever appropriate to clarify recommendations.

In many of the problem sections, the basic discussion is supplemented by sidebars or boxes on related subjects. For example, the section on 'Gunshot Wounds' contains a sidebar on shotgun wounds. The section on 'Urinary Blockage' has a sidebar on bladder stones. The section on 'Shock' has a sidebar on blood loss. The 'Birthing Problems' section contains a sidebar on the afterbirth.

All of these extras add an enormous amount of information to the basic advice on how to deal with emergencies. Numerous other recommendations of products or devices are also included, such as:

· A pillowcase to restrain an injured cat
· A soda bottle as a kitten body warmer
· Hemostats for removing foreign objects from a cat's mouth
· A Bite-Not collar instead of an Elizabethan collar
· A homemade solution to 'de-skunk' a cat
· Plastic wrap for bandaging abdominal wounds, and
· Pumpkin to prevent constipation

All are additional to the basic sections on injuries and conditions, which cover not only such items as car accidents, diarrhea, poisoning and the like, but also such subjects as clothes dryer injuries, limping and smoke inhalation.

This book is a wonderful resource that every cat owner should have at hand. It is a quick helper and is organized accordingly. To top things off, it has a very good 22-page index.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helpful info!
This book is packed with helpful information that I can really use...Rather than providing a dumbed-down, one-size-fits-all recipe for feeding, Briggs gives horse owners the facts and formulas they need to make sure their horses' nutritional needs are met.

4-0 out of 5 stars Try something else...
This book is complete and informative, albeit a little hard to read. Horses have many different dietary requirements: fiber, fat, vitamins, minerals, protein... and Karen Briggs doesn't create any charts or guides to help you figure out which elements are likely to be lacking in your particular horses diet. Instead, try "Beyond the Hay Days" which provides equally detailed and comprehensive information as well as helpful summary charts that help you understand what your equines diet might be lacking and how best to suppliment it. ... A very useful and comprehensive book that covers the needs of the field vet as well as the ones of the university researcher. Detailed sections on each subject are well organised and easy to move trough (uncommon fact for a book of this size). I bought it for practice use and is a constant source of useful informations. It always clears my doubts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Equine Repro
This book is a thorough review of current techniques in equine reproduction medicine. The level of detail is extensive, thus making this book a great reference for the equine practitioner. It includes background information as well as currently accepted treatment protocols, so is very handy for both equine vets and vet students (like myself). Highly recommended for students & practitioners specializing in equine medicine.

3-0 out of 5 stars This is a technical book on reproduction in the horse.
This book is a technical book on breeding of the horse and while it covers evertything from problems with the mare, problems with the stallion, foaling problems it is not written in a language easily understood by the average horseman. It does cover topics such as anatomy, physiology, endocrinology, the estrous cycle, reproductive examination, manipulating the reproductive cycle, reproductive surgery, pregnancy, partuition, the stallion and the foal as well as diseases and disorders affecting breeding it is not easy reading. There is a great deal of information in the book containing 1114 pages, good photographs, and a great deal of information I found that I personally was seeking a more down to earth book that laid out breeding in simpler terms. it does not go into genetic inheritance except in genes that might cause death or abnormalities. I would reccommend it for anyone who would be interested in breeding on a large scale but not for someone wanting to produce one or two foals. ... Read more

Book Description

KEEPING LIVESTOCK HEALTHY is one of the recognized classics in its field. Small Farmer's Journal called it "a major contribution to available farm veterinary literature." Modern Veterinary Practice wrote: ". . . highly recommended to all livestock owners." And Farmstead Magazine said, "So admirably organized and indexed that its information is instantly available."

Now completely revised and updated, this fourth edition draws on the very latest research from experts on each of the five animals covered - horses, cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. It presents new information on vaccines, artificial insemination, ultrasonography, disease testing, drug treatments, and diseases such as Lyme disease, Potomac fever, bluetongue, foot-and-mouth disease, and mad cow disease. This complete reference on livestock health is an invaluable guide to preventing disease through good nutrition, proper housing, and appropriate care.
