Book Description

The new, third edition of the "gold standard" in the field has been completely revised and updated, reflecting large animal internal medicine as it is practiced today. In a single, comprehensive volume, it covers virtually everything the busy practitioner needs to know on the subject. Using a problem-oriented approach to the diagnosis of diseases of horses, cattle, sheep, and goats, it teaches readers how to diagnose based on what they observe and what the laboratory and diagnostic tests reveal. Complete lists of common, less common, and uncommon diseases associated with particular signs or symptoms are given in easy-to-find boxes, and the clinician is given an approach to each manifestation of disease and a method to work toward a diagnosis. Readers will also find guidance on treating problems symptomatically, a method that is commonly used in everyday practice. In addition, interpretation of abnormalities is made easier with complete lists of diseases associated with a given laboratory abnormality provided in handy boxes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable reference for large animal medicine
This textbook is, in my experience, the best single medicine reference for large animals. It is designed for the graduate veterinarian and is not easy to read, but contains an immense amount of information (plus references) in a usable format. The index is comprehensive, which is useful as some conditions are discussed by different authors in disparate sections of the text. The text is divided into body systems, then subdivided into equine and ruminant diseases. There are also useful rule-out lists for major clinical signs provided at the beginning of the book. The illustrations and photographs are black-and-white and are largely the same as the previous edition, but this edition contains well-updated text material. Detractors from this text include minimal specific treatment information for some disease processes and the lack of a formulary. It also does not cover swine or camelid species. Nonetheless, I find this book far easier to read and use (with more comprehensive information) than the similar Blood and Radostits text. If you care to invest in several texts instead of a single one, try the Current Veterinary Therapy Equine Practice and Food Animal Practice (very easy to read). However, if you choose these keep in mind that you may need more than one volume of each, as each CVT volume is not comprehensive. My copy of Smith is constantly at hand, and has seen a great deal of use since I purchased it. I recommend this book to any large animal practitioner as a necessary reference. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book!!
I have 30 bantam chickens, and I turn to this book all the time whenever I have a proplem. I highly recomend it for anyone that is or is going to raise chickens. Whenever you have a problem you just turn to the diognoses charts, match the symptoms and the age, and find out what it is. You then go the back and find the disease, and then it tells you how to treat it, prevent it, if there's any human health risk and much MUCH more!! It also tell you EVERYTHING else you need to know on how to raise them. I VERY highly recomend this book as well as Storys Guide To Raising Chickens by Gail Dammerow as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to have around !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read out of five!!!

I've read five books on chickens in the last month and this was by far the best and most informative of them all!!! It is a very easy to reference to. 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST FOR EVERY EQUINE VETERINARIAN
I am a private Equine veterinarian whom has been actively involved in Equine practice since I graduated in 1986. I have gone through this book in various places as I have not been able to own one for some unknown reason and my first impression of it was it is a must for every Equine Veterinarian. It contains alot of valuble information. Now thanks to the Distance Learning Programme in Equine Surgery, conducted by the Post-Graduate Foundation, University of Sdyney under Dr.Nick Kannegieter, I was able to get this book as it comes highly recommended in this programme. ... Book Description

People in the horse world know all too well that performance horses, like human athletes, are trained, fed and cared for so they can go faster, jump higher and run longer. Daily training and competing can result in injuries, aches and pains, which if treated by drugs alone may only mask the problem and not remedy it. This is why equine massage therapist Jean-Pierre Hourdebaigt created a program of techniques that will enable owners and riders, trainers and grooms to:

  • Alleviate soreness and pain in the horse's most vulnerable stress sites.
  • Identify and treat the injuries common to any horse sport.
  • Use relaxation and maintenance routines for the horse's mental and physical well-being.
Hourdebaigt provides step-by-step instruction and more than 150 photographs and diagrams so that everyone—including nonprofessionals—can learn to massage their horse. Equine Massage may be the key to unlocking the door to a horse's future, one that promises good health and improved performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for the Equestrian, Horse Owner, Trainer
For less than a fraction of the cost of a single massage session, utilizing the techniques in is wonderful book enables you to free up your horse from aches, pains, and holding patterns at a minimum. The charts and diagrams alone are worth the price.

In a few short sessions, I have been able to reduce swelling from a deep hematoma in a horse I work with who suffered a recent fall, just one example of improved circulation. He is more relaxed, moves more freely, is comfortable in his own skin now, and more able to learn. It also does wonders for deeper bonding and improving your relationship.

This book is well thought-out, easy to use, and the spiral binding is very useful. Mr. Hourdebaigt is one of few masters in the relatively new field of ESMT. One does well to learn from him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A marvelous book for any horse owner or lover...
This is a great book. It is filled with excellent charts and illustrations, as well as thorough explanations of techniques the average horse owner/lover can use to help create and increase wellness in their horse.

The book covers the following: Anatomy and Physiology of the Horse; The Horse and Massage Therapy; Principles and Concepts of Massage; Hydrotherapy; Massage Techniques and Routines; Kinesiology of the Horse; Stretching; Conformation Check-up Routine; Body Parts and Their Stress Points; Areas of Stress Specific to Each Discipline; Keeping Records.

This book begs to be taken to the stable with you, and the format makes it easy to use there. It is spiral bound, which makes it easy to leave open to a section from which you're working, and the cover is easily wiped off if it gets dirty (not that we ever get dirty at the barn, eh?). All in all this is a marvelous book, don't hesitate to buy it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helps your horse
It's amazing how easy it is to follow the author's instructions. I actually didn't know how to massage but I took the book with me to the barn and worked on my horse. Almost immediately, I could see the difference. He was moving more freely. His back felt much better. Later I used it on his legs to reduce swelling. Now when his leg swells or his back stiffens, I know what to do. If only I could get someone to do this for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear, well written and well illustrated
I already had a few basic massage techniques from my equine physio and this book is exactly what I wanted to further my knowledge. The beginning of the book includes clear detailed anatomical pictures.

Each technique is then described and shown and practical helpful hints such as using your bathroom scales to work out what 'X'lbs of pressure feels like abound. To make the book even better there are then sections which describe what various 'routines' might be made up of (relaxation for instance) and how long to spend etc. There are also recommendations for how to start with a new horse, body signals to look for and when you may need a helper.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Informative, easy to understand, and it actually works. My horse loves some of the techniques used in this book! I am very pleased! ... Read more

Book Description

Animal Physiology presents all the branches of modern animal physiology with a strong emphasis on integration among physiological disciplines, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The book takes an entirely fresh approach to each topic. Its full-color illustrations include many novel, visually effective features to help students learn. Each of the 28 chapters starts with a brief animal example to engage student interest and demonstrate the value of the material that will be learned. The book includes five entire chapters that apply students' newfound physiological knowledge to curiosity-provoking and important topics, including diving by marine mammals, the mechanisms of navigation, and use/disuse effects in muscle. The book is committed to a comparative approach throughout. While mammalian physiology is consistently treated in depth, emphasis is also given to the other vertebrate groups, arthropods, molluscs, and-as appropriate-additional invertebrates. Concepts and integrative themes are emphasized while giving students the specifics they need. The whole animal is the principal focus of this book. The pages are filled with information on everything from knockout mice and enzyme chemistry to traditional organ physiology, phylogenetic analysis, and applications to human affairs. Always, the central organizing principle for the array of topics presented is to understand whole animals in the environments where they live. Concepts from chemistry, physics, and mathematics are explained so the book will be accessible to science students at the sophomore or higher level. Neurophysiological and other complex principles are developed clearly and carefully, to help students understand important concepts in sufficient depth without being overwhelmed. Pedagogical aids include embedded summaries throughout chapters, study questions, partially annotated reference lists, an extensive glossary, and appendices. For all three authors, teaching physiology to undergraduate students has been a lifelong priority. The opening three chapters provide background material on physiological basics, cell-molecular concepts, transport of solutes and water, ecology, and evolutionary biology. The remaining chapters are organized into five sections:

Food, Energy, and Temperature
Integrating Systems
Muscle and Movement
Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, and Internal Transport
* Water, Salts, and Excretion ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the bible - worth every penny
As an advanced herp keeper, I held off on getting this book for a while, intimidated by the price tag. Since taking the plunge, I regret only the money I spent on other books before getting this one. Not that there isn't good information available elsewhere, but Mader's book is the standard to which it's all compared.

Once you've gotten past Iguanas for Dummies (or other appropriate species-specific husbandry information), this is the book that will take you to the next level.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Source
If you had to own ONE book as a reference in reptile medicine and surgery, this is the book to own. Compared to Frye's books, this book is extremely concise and to the point. Unlike Frye's book the pictures are black and white, and some of the anatomy diagrams are quite simplistic, but they illustrate all the things that need to be illustrated.

The book is extremely well organized and the index lets you find things quite readily. This book provides all the basic information that any general veterinarian would need to see reptiles in practice. The book is not entirely comprehensive, but it is a great general source upon which to build, and the exotic animal specialist will need other sources to be current. The reptile formulary is concise and to the point, but not exhaustive and the reader should consult other supplemental sources for drug dosages.

In the back, there is a chapter on Amphibian medicine by Dr. Kevin Wright. Although brief, it is well written and, since Dr. Wright took about 10 years (maybe longer?) to write his own book, an excellent reference on the subject.

I recommend this book to everybody. Dr. Mader has followed on Dr. Frye's famous shoes quite nicely by making a general reference that is available to and easy to use by everybody. As of today, in December 2001, the fact that Dr. Mader's book may be lacking in some areas is a tribute to itself, for it is responsible for launching a rapid growth in reptile medical techniques and clinical knowledge since it became available.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reptile Medicine and Surgery
This is in my opinion the best reference available on the topic of reptile medicine and surgery. It is well organized, up-to-date and well written. Dr. Mader along with his contributors are all very well respected in this field and provide the most current knowledge on the subject. This text is a must for anyone who sees these animals in their practice or for someone wanting to add these species to their practice.

4-0 out of 5 stars BEST IN THE FIELD
Without a doubt, of all the herpetological veterinary resources, this is the best one available. Dr. Mader, having corrected many of the errors found in the Frye text, has created an easily read, easily understood reference and/or training book that should be on the shelves of any exotic animal veterinarian or student. Mader's only shortcoming is in the shortage of photographs (the ones he provides are clear and easily understood) in cases where text may be very complex, and the, at times, over-brevity of descriptions of treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The finest book available about reptile medicine.
Mader, the man whose name is synonomous with reptile medicine, has taken reptile medical texts to a new level. This book is logically laid out so information may be quickly and easily extracted. This book is far superior to Fry's texts in layout, content, and price. Reptile Medicine and Surgery is a must have for any veterinarian who treats reptiles or serious reptile keeper. ... Read more

Book Description

Updated and expanded, the new 6th edition of this popular text remains the only encyclopedic resource for veterinary internal medical problems! This internationally acclaimed "gold standard" offers unparalleled coverage of pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting dogs and cats. Focusing on the clinical manifestations of disease and approaching disease in terms of the organ system involved, this comprehensive resource presents the latest information on specialties ranging from oncology, immunology, and reproductive problems, to skeletal and joint disorders, gastroenterology, and more. This new edition also includes a companion CD-ROM with references and weblinks, and is available in an e-dition package that includes the complete text with full search capabilities, frequent updates, animations and other color graphics, client information handouts, a "case-of-the-month" feature, and links to relevant websites for further information. * It's the only complete reference for veterinary internal medical problems. * Unparalleled coverage is provided on pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases affecting dogs and cats. * The first part of the book is devoted to clinical manifestations or clinical signs of disease, because animals should be evaluated in terms of presenting sign, not on the basis of disease. * The most common signs have been chosen, presented, and discussed in a concise and logical manner, starting with the physical examination and covering system-based signs and symptoms. * Algorithms present the reader with a ready flowchart for aid in the identification and decision-making of each disease anticipated in small animal medicine. * The second part of the book adopts the usual approach to disease as understood in terms of the organ system involved. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Professional standard
Used in most veterinary schools in the world. Translated into 5 languages and generally considered the most complete general veterinary internal medicine textbook. First section is very easy to read approach to clinical medicine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Rambling Text, No Meat
Reading this book is like running in sand - much effort is expended with little progress. Generalizations and qualitative rather than quantitative facts abound. A chapter on crusting and scaling dermatoses provides vague descriptions and procedures; if you didn't know how to interpret a skin scraping or impression smear before you read this chapter you wouldn't know after reading it either. The chapters on rickettsial disease do not include the most quantitative and pivotal clinical and experimental references. Canine Rocky Mountan spotted fever for example is a fascinating, unique syndrome, but this text provides neither a clear clinical description nor an explanation of the pathophysiologic basis of this infection. The book greatly underestimates the knowledge and skill level of the graduate veterinarian.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most handy reference on the subject
This is by far the most useful text of its kind. While it is not as comprehensive as Harrison's book on avian medicine, nor as thorough as Altman's, this book is a better deal in terms of accesing practical information and cost. 5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Dyce
This a great book that gets right to the point instead of dancing around it like dyce. I highly recommend it to all of my fellow vet students. It will save you tons of time!

4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone wants Pasquini
I'm a vet student in the Philippines and even though we have anatomy books in the library, i really found it hard to study it. So I guess Pasquini has really simplified the subject, breaking it down into tables and diagrams and simple texts. it even has "clinical" boxes so you can appreciate what you're studying! if you're a first year stude, it'll help you become familiar with a lot of diseases, IM or IV sites, etc. My classmates find the pictures very cute (as w/ many others). I'm restudying it right now to prepare for surgery. it's just been a direct, miracle book. On the other hand, no colored pictures and the systemic approach can bog you down with locating some stuff. and sometimes, i get confused with the diagrams, but that's just me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have trouble memorizing? This book is for you!
I absolutely loved this book for anatomy...and still use it for more advanced classes today! The drawings are very accurate and Pasquini does a wonderful job providing alternative views. I really appreciated the little poems, etc. that he provides as a way to memorize difficult things, such as arcade formulas. And, you may just need the cute little horse on the potty, cows reproducing and being pregnant to allow a small smile during that difficult first year of vet school.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Anatomy books I've come across
Most Anatomy books will put you to sleep but this one is easier to read. The text is well spaced, summarised and there are many illustrations (in the form of sketches). As a Vet student, I find the book quite helpful and comprehensive, too bad there is no color or actual pictures. When studying bones for example, it helps to see the tuberosities, contours and general features from real photos.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book! Too bad it is only black and white
Great book as far as the content is concerned. It is full of sketches and illustrations (sorry, no real photos), packed with detail. There is reference to the anatomical features of all domestic animals (even Llamas), but less info for the pig. There is also mentioning of the clinical importance for several anatomical features, as well as species variations. Very practical indead, clear and detailed illustrations. Humorous animal characters make the material "ligher". Recommended especially for vet students like myself. It is a good reference book. ... Read more

There are many, many helpful tables and figures, and the addition of a formulary in the back is welcome. While no book can provide all the answers, I find 90% of them in here. My only complaint is the coverage of emergency care could be tweaked. In critical care situations, when I need information regarding a particular emergency in a hurry, this is not the book I turn to first.

5-0 out of 5 stars a brilliant practical manual, in depth yet reader friendly
A very handy tome of immense value in the stress situation for quick information as well as for in depth study to bone up on latest techniques and those possibly a bit rusty. I can strongly recommend this, it is excellent value. I would want a more updated model though and hope for a new edition soon--I hope the authors are reading this?

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for Veterianry students. Love it !!!
A book which explores the small animal Veterinary field, uses simple and clear explainations to many different issues in that field. As a student for Veterinary Medicine in the clinical stage, I open the book very often. the book is very readable and friendly for students which their first language is other than English (unlike many others we all know).

You must have it !!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Biology and Medicine of Rabbits and Rodents
The purpose is to provide lab professionals with the advice on the maintenance of rabbits and rodents, concerning their care and health. It covers rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, mouse and rat. Even though it is intended for *experts*, the book is relatively easy to read and is very thorough starting with the general husbandry and biology, followed by clinical procedures, sign of disease, diagnoses and listing specific diseases and conditions from A-Z. It lists the hosts for the disease, etiology, transmission, predisposing factors, clinical signs, necropsy signs, diagnosis, prevention, effect on research and public health significance. The last chapter has self test with case reports.

Even though this is not an *exotic pet rodent* book, it is a great reference book for any rabbit or rodent pet owner, since most diseases occur in pets as well as in laboratory animals. A nice middle ground between serious technical veterinary books and the common photo pet shop books. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not specific enough
I found this book to be good for novices, but it lacks in-depth information about treatment. For instance, under parasite control it says "talk to your veterinarian" No list of common wormers, their activity, safety and recommended dosing schedule. At least here in Guatemala, the vet prefers for you to participate in the possible diagnoses and treatment options to make an informed decision. This book leaves me in the cold. I recommend you check out Dr. Giffin's manual for horse owners - much more detailed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book of information for anyone
This book is quite useful with an emphasis on the health and care of the horse. Essentially, it is a collection of articles written by veterinarians and other horse oriented people from the vet school. Reproduction takes up almost 150 pages. Other large topics covered include nutrition, diseases and disorders, and care. Other topics such as vaccinations, selection, transportation, breeds, and behavior. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone, since the articles cover information that horse owners should be aware of (such as the extensive disease articles), but might not be entirely educated about.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thorough yet concise reference of horse care and ailments
This is the book I was looking for when I bought all the others. I was attracted by the fact that the authors are not only veterinarians but also faculty of a school of veterinary medicine. This book is written for horse owners, not aspiring veterinarians, but is far more detailed than any other book I have found. This one volume contains all the detail you will ever need, probably more. I bought this book in desperation when my horse's condition stumped my vet. The answer was on page 168. This book is written at a level appropriate to the intelligent but not medically trained reader. Technical terms are used extensively but are defined as they are introduced. Understanding the technical terms can facilitate discussion with one's veterinarian. There is far more information than one needs in order to own a horse but for the owner who wants to learn more than just the basics, this is the book to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for students of equine science
I teach classes in Equine Science at both high school and community college levels. The UC Davis book will become the required text for several of my classes next semester. The information is timely, complete and correct! ... Read more
