Thrall's book is the standard reference for veterinary radiology. This book is extremely comprehensive and accurate, although perhaps not as detailed as some of those that focus on specific areas of radiology and radiographoc interpretation. I find it extremely useful and easy to find information.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a keeper!
I purchased the book and the video tape. It is truly an excellent reference manual and I believe is a good basis start with. It's easy to understand and you can go out and start doing it. It's nice how the book has different ailments broken down so you can refer to a specific problem without wading through a bunch of text. My horses love it and I love doing it for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars factual but floaty
As an student of acupuncture and a university instructor teaching animal anatomy, I found this book to be very informative in the background and philosphy of the chinese system of healing regarding the five elements and chinese theory, however the drawings and acpressure point illustrations are vague. The points hover and "float" on a rough skeletal drawing and the anatomy is totally absent. Some points are floating away from the skeletal landmarks and have no muscular or nerve references because they are set against a blank background. There is also a flat side view which doesn't help when understanding the deeper levels of some of the meridians and the skeletal references are weak. Therefore, especially for the layperson, the book is insufficient. Even the simplist of acupuncture and acupressure books for humans have a simple but thorough anatomy reference. This book lacks in this area, but is very good in breaking down the chinese theraputic approach in a way western practitioners can understand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Equine Accupressure A working Manual
I have read the book and veiwed the video. I also attended a workshop taught by one of the authors. I strongly recommend contacting tallgrass publications and attending a workshop. It has benefited me as well as my horses and dogs.

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the only books available on Horse Acupressure...
This book is one of the only works I could find about Acupressure with Horses. The book covers the twelve meridians, accupressure points related to each meridian, combinations of acupressure points related to different diseases or applications, etc.

Because it is the only work I found, I am very happy to have it, however, it is largely insufficient as stand-alone work. I advise to start a course on shiatsu, acupressure, acupuncture, or something similar instead of working from books alone.

The drawings in this book are relatively poor and locating the acupressure points will not be easy without help. I have the impression this is ment to be a reference for students that participated the courses they organise.

Hope this review helps.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
.

. . .And I wasn't expecting to! As a Clinical Massage Therapist, I perform accupressure every day, but I've always had a big fat Western Health Care Provider mental block about this sort of thing.

The authors have made me a believer! Great visuals, expertly written text and basic explanations of what you're doing (aside from unsubstantiated empirical evidence) make this a book to keep! I absolutely could not put it down until I had devoured it!

I strongly recomend this book! ... Read more

summation about this book

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introductory book
This text looks a little thin for $ 99 but once you look at the quality and number of its pictures you realize that it is worth every penny. I missed a more detailed description on how to take radiographs as great asthe ones the authors show, and the part on ultrasonography might be alittle more comprehensive. Or maybe it is that the part on radiology is sodarn good than nothing else can match it! If you need to learn radiology, buy it and enjoy yourself for hours by looking at the beautiful picturesand reading the excellent descriptions. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Basic Principles of Equine Massage/Muscle Therapy
Excellent book! Mike Scott communicates well with the lay person in easy to understand terms--almost as though he is speaking directly to you. His perspective is interesting--and the book is a great anotomey lesson or review as well. I highly recommend it and would look forward to a next addition.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just What I Was Looking For
Mike Scott's guide provides an ideal overview for the horse owner/enthusiast interested in learning about equine massage. The book is very well organized and surprisingly easy to read. It introduces the layperson to how muscles work and discusses the importance of learning about horse anatomy. It moves on to various massage techniques and strokes before describing a massage session. It then contains a very helpful section consisting of anatomical line drawings of "active points" to be worked accompanied by black and white photographs demonstrating the techniques. Mike also includes helpful sections on stretches for your horse and saddle fitting.

As good as the book is, I found it could have benefitted from more extensive photo selection and diligent proofreading. The photos that were included were extremely useful; however, I found it somewhat frustrating that some photos were repeated when other angles or shots would have helped. Most of the captions are also appropriately descriptive, but there are others that could have been a bit more specific (particularly when identifying which muscles were being worked). Finally, there are more than a mere handful of grammatical, typographical, and punctuation errors. While the lack of care to cure these errors certainly had me wonder if there was a similar lack of care about the substance, all in all, I do recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Basic Principle of Equine Massage and Muscle Therepy
My horse recently got a massage and it helped him a lot. When I worked him afterwards, he looked wonderful, and his canter, which is really a rocking horse canter, looked great! I really wanted to know what I could do to keep him in such great shape, especially through the winter.

5-0 out of 5 stars easy to follow
This book is an easy to follow guide that has helped me with my horse immensely. The massage techniques are very informative and easy to follow but the other sections on follow up exercises and saddle fit have been a great help as well. I look forward to Mike Scotts next book!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Easy to Follow
This book shows the basics on horse massage, a topic not often written about. With the great illustrations and photos, this is a practical and easy to follow book. The spiral bound element is also great for on the location barn use. It is easy to keep the page where you want it to be. I highly recomend this book to anyone who is serious about their horses. A must have. ... Read more

Book Description

The world of veterinary medicine is changing. People are realizing that if alternative medicine is better for them, it's better for their pets, too. Dogs are visiting acupuncturists, chiropractic doctors, and homeopaths. Still, many dog owners are unaware that such simple measures as changing their pet's diet and using vitamins, herbs, and other natural cures can help prevent or heal ailments ranging from excessive scratching to depression to a host of serious diseases.

The Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Dogs is both an introduction and a guide to the vast world of natural healing methods, treatments, and foods now available for dogs. Author Martin Zucker offers advice from dozens of holistic practitioners and licensed veterinarians, who share their recipes, insights, and "prescriptions." Here dog owners will find information on everything from nutritional supplements to massage therapy, as well as how these treatments can be used alone or in conjunction with traditional medications and surgical techniques.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative yet easy to read and interpret
I found this book when I was desperate to help my dog who was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur. This book has been an incredible resource for me. I love how all the information on recommended herbs, diets, etc. are backed up with a professional's name and phone number (many times). I understand that there is a time for conventional medicine but I have always been inclined to go the "alternative or natural" way. After reading this book, I am extremely happy to say that my dog is doing incredible and has barely a trace of a heart murmur left. My vet even asked me what I had done between 6 month doctor visits for such drastic results. If anyone cares about their pet/best friend as I do, this book will hold the supreme honor on your bookshelf. Please share this information with others.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Dog's best friend!
This book is a must for anyone who is serious about giving their dogs health and longevity. This book takes you from A to Z on nutrition, diseases, vaccinations and anything else you can think of. This is written by a group of holistic vets each contributing their opinion on the different subjects covered in the book. This vast range of opinions allows the reader a multitude of choices on how to care for their dog. Happy reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-Use Holistic Reference Guide
A must have reference for every dog owner. Zucker compiles recommendations from over 30 of the top holistic veterinarians from across the country in this two part book. Part I covers the foundation of good health, diet and nutrition. In addition the basics on alternative modalities, supplements and remedies are discussed.

Part II is organized in an A to Z list of common problems -- from arthritis to yeast infections. Each section contains recommendations and information from a number of holistic vets. This format gives you the opportunity to learn about several different treatment options and decide what's best for your dog's individual situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where was this great book 10 years ago?
This wonderful book change my life and my new puppy's life for the best. I've checked other documents on this subject before but I couldn't bring myself to spend the money to buy any of them. When I went to the store to look at the book, it was so clear and easy to read. I glanced at the chapter on allergies to compare what I had seen in other books and it was so complete. A whole chapter as opposed to a paragraph or a page in the others. It's full of informations, products and phone numbers, where to find a holistic vet. in your area, etc. ect. Every pet owner in the world should read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Intro to Natural Remedies for Dogs
Martin Zucker has interviewed over thirty holistic vets for this book. They share which supplements, dietary changes, herbs, homeopathic remedies, or flower essences they have found to be effective for conditions ranging from arthritis and cancer to parasites and yeast infections. If you've been into natural rearing for a while, few of the suggestions will be new to you, but the book is nonetheless a nice resource.
In addition to the A-Z index of canine health problems and suggested natural remedies, there are brief chapters introducing various holistic therapies (herbs, nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies, flower essences, acupuncture, chiropractic, and massage techniques), plus chapters on vaccinations/titers and nutrition. However, while it's great that the holistic vets interviewed for this book are advocating fresh food diets, the information presented in the chapter on homemade meals is not sufficient to enable anyone to prepare a balanced homemade diet for their dog(s). For properly balanced fresh food diet plans, check out books by Billinghurst, Volhard, or Pitcairn. I also have to disagree with the section on feeding bones -- in my experience with natural dog rearing and as an animal nutrition consultant I have found that softer, raw bones such as chicken necks or backs that are consumed in their entirety are far safer than the big, hard beef bones recommended in the book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Learning Veterinary Terminology
This book was a great help during my Veterinary Assistant class. My Teacher, who is also a Vet Tech, told it was a must. It helped us break down terms, learn anatomy and body systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book.
I am working in a Vet clinic and for the past 5 years have wanted to learn more. This book really hepls me understand all the "doctor" words. All in all its a great book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS WONDERFUL!
I had waited to buy this book for a while and finally purchased it recently. I'm an 18 year old pre-veterinary medicine major. I found this book amazing!! It not only teaches you the terminology required to understand veterinary medicine but also teaches you anatomy of a wide variety of animals and also is somewhat of a veterinary dictionary because at the end of most chapters there is an exceptionaly good glossary of terms used. It also uses methods such as croosword puzzles and word finds along with other tools to make learning easier! If your a pre-vet major or vet student get this book!! It's a bargain for all you get.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Way to Learn Veterinary Vocabulary!
I am in my first year in a Veterinary Technician program. Although I also work in an animal hospital, there were still many terms I had never even heard before! This book has an excellent way of breaking down each word--by root word, prefixes, and suffixes. It is such an easy way to learn the terms and comprehend their true meanings. Each chapter has its own self-tests (and answers) to further your understanding of the vocabulary. There is also a section in the back of the book that includes general information of every system in the cat/dog/horse. I loved this section when reviewing for quizzes and exams!

4-0 out of 5 stars Those interested in Vet. Medicine will appreciate this book
This book is a very thorough dialog on veterinary terminology. Be advised that after reading this book you will DEFINITELY be able to determine what your veterinarian is talking about when he doesn't use layman terms (in other words, you will definitely learn a lot from this book). The book itself is not intimidating and it does have some very good ways of learning the information. However, it does get very technical, so you might want to forgo it if you're not up to studying. ... Read more

Rabbit medicine is a difficult subject to cover. Although our knowledge has increased greatly in the last ten years, there is still much we do not know. Harcourt-Brown does a very good job of describing medical problems that are common in rabbits, and provides information on treatment. She also provides valuable information on biological characteristics and husbandry.

The only thing that I would have liked to see more of in the book are pictures. 5-0 out of 5 stars Exotic pet owners need this book, too
I'm not a vet, nor in the veterinary field. I'm the owner of (or slave to, if you prefer) several species of exotic pets. I bought this book because I saw it in my vets' office, and thought it would be a good way to learn more. Indeed it is. I'm lucky, in that my vets happen to be extremely good exotics vets, but many people live in places where the only vets are cat-and-dog vets. If you own a guinea pig or rabbit, getting it treated by a cat-and-dog vet can be chancy.

This book will help the pet owner double-check the advice of cat-and-dog vets they've asked to try to treat their hedgehogs or ferrets. It has other uses for pet owners, as well; the chapters for each animal also contain concise summaries of dietary needs for the animals. For some species, where commercial all-in-one pellets are still hard to find, the suggestions for constructing a balanced diet out of more readily available foods will be quite useful.

Every pet mammal gets mites (sigh). (I will admit to being a mammal and bird person. I have no idea whether reptiles can get mites or lice of any sort.) It's nice to have a book available telling you whether ivermectin is safe for your pet, and which solution and dilution is most commonly used for that species. Seeing what medicines are used for which diseases and parasites also can give you an idea of what diseases to watch out for in your pet. Since almost all dosages are based on weight, the book also serves as a reminder that weighing your pet regularly is an important way to keep track of its health.

Last but not least in importance for the pet owner, this book is less expensive than many other veterinary books, so that if you only have limited resources in which to obtain more information about your pet, this book won't put as big a dent in them as, say, some of the textbooks which include photos of surgical procedures. If you want to be the best pet owner that your pet can have, and be able to comprehend the advice your vet gives you, and discuss choices with him or her in an informed manner, this book is an excellent resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Formulary
The KState crew does it again... pocket pet drugs galore from thepocket pet Gods. This nice little book took a while to come out, but it was worth waiting for.The book is extremely comprehensive and well referenced, easy to use and gives you multiple options on the different treatment regimes. However, there are some misprints on drug dosages which the acute veterinarian will pick up, so be careful... All in all, you must buy this book!! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars The Equine Arena Handbook
... [T]he book is a basic starter that someone interested in building or maintaining their own riding ring would find useful. The most important aspect of the book is to indirectly point the reader to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service in order to obtain soil survey and soil type analysis. The book lacked any information on the new footings being marketed (shredded rubber, dust free materials, etc.) citing lack of research conclusions at time of publication. But overall, it tells you what kind of soils and conditions you need to have to build a good to excellent riding ring. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent clinical reference
This title is by far the best reference on this subject on the market today. It is thoroughly referenced and has excellent pictures.Any practice dealing with pet, zoo or wild birds will benefit greatly by havingthis book on the shelf.

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid, colorful reference
This book is a handy clinical reference, and should be in every exotic or avian clinician's reference library. This is probably THE most useful technical reference on this subject, and the 2nd Edition is a slight improvement from the first. Alan Fudge's Book is similar and perhaps more affordable, but this is by far a more thorough reference. ... Read more
