4-0 out of 5 stars Lot of good information, difficult to get through it all
I found this book to be inclusive of a lot of current information, but it is not for light reading. It can be difficult to get through all of the information, or dig out what you may find useful. Her emphasis on some problem behaviors being the consequence of an imbalance in neurotransmitters is not shared by everyone, as a good majority of these animals can be considered normal when evaluated in an ethological sense.

The handouts at the end of the book are very useful in getting a history from an owner, as well as handouts for the treatment of problem behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is it!
This book should be on the shelf of everyone who works with dogs and cats, especially those who work directly with pet owners. The appendix is packed with detailed protocols to help owners manage and change problem behaviors, from dominance aggression to inappropriate urination and back again to chronic leg-humping. Owner compliance is one of the biggest challenges animal care professionals face, and these detailed step-by-step protocols steer sometimes overwhelmed civilians in the right direction.

My only complaint with this book is that you will (I promise, you will,) lose a few pages due to the perforated appendices. It would be nice to see a spiral-bound, easily photocopied edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential reading for anyone serious about animals
I have consulted with Dr. Overall in the treatment of a dog we rescued who has OCD, and in addition, I have also read her book cover to cover three times. There are a lot of books on this topic -- both for veterinarians and for lay people -- out there, but this one is the best. Dr. Overall, unlike a number of vets (even veterinary behaviorists) truly understands the nature of dog behavior -- and the importance of positive reinforcement in shapingn it. She is my hero, and I recommend this book to anyone who has a serious interest in animal behavior.

4-0 out of 5 stars Finally not something made for the novice!
I have been looking for good textbooks on this subject for quite some time, as most texts don't have much to offer me. (I have a BS in Animal Science with extensive work in behavior.) The text seems clearly written and well organized. I also like the way the author talks about where we lack on each subject - where more reseach is needed. A very good book for the scholar type. But defintely not for newcomers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Quintessential Text for Behavioural Medicine!
Karen Overall, whom I affectionately call the Behaviour Goddess, has allowed her passion for her work to spill over into what could have been a dry tome on the emerging field of veterinary behavioural medicine.

Almost every topic (from epidemiology to pharmacology) is exhaustively covered and she has clearly indentified where further research is warranted.

A must read for any veterinarian, behaviourist or pet owner searching for more information about their pet's normal and abnormal behaviours.

As an accomplished doctor of veterinary medicine, Martin Goldstein is well respected for his 25 years worth of experience in the field--experience he effectively utilizes in conjunction with his expertise in holistic medicine in his new book, The Nature of Animal Healing: The Path to Your Pet's Health, Happiness, and Longevity. Goldstein begins with a broad explanation of the origins of diseases in pets, then moves on to taking action against those diseases, not only offering thorough discussions of specific ailments--including cancer, allergies, and arthritis--and the holistic medicines available to help in the healing process, but also speaking to the "dubious legacy of vaccines" as well as the questionable quality of pet food. Finally, Goldstein turns his attention to the spiritual realm, addressing both the bonds that we have with our pets--and how those bonds aid in preventing and fighting our pets' health problems--as well as dealing with the death of a beloved pet. Goldstein's expert advice, inclusion of inspiring real-life cases, and thorough resource "compendium of holistic books, newsletters, Web sites, veterinarians, and associations" make this book a valuable addition to any pet owner's library. --Julia King ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This will change your views of the veterinary profession!
I have been providing our dogs with alternative health treatments since 1995. I was fed up with conventional care--too many pills that merely masked underlying illnesses and no real treatment. Our dogs have glowing health and everyone remarks on their vigor & beautiful coats. Dr. Goldstein, because of his successes with cancer & chronic illnesses, has conventional veterinarians quaking in their boots. So much of medicine is run by the profit motive, totally denying the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors and vets. Think of the marketing of pet foods and vaccinations in the office of the vet--two of the biggest money-makers in the industry. It is no wonder those boots are quaking. I implore you to read this book for the sake of your pets' health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living Proof !
After seeing a review of Dr. Goldstein's book in a Sunday newspaper, I found it on Amazon.com. At the time, my Doberman was recently diagnosed with cancer -- I was looking for information, alternatives and additional methods of treating her disease. I bought the book, read it all the way through in 3 days, and sent an email to Dr. Goldstein asking for help. This was 2+ years ago -- my Dobie, diagnosed as having 6-8 months to live and in need of a full leg amputation, is now 10 years old and running and playing on 4 legs!

The book is clearly written, offers sensible solutions for alternative care and stresses the importance of nutrition as the starting point of health. Kudos to Dr. Goldstein for writing an enlightening book that empowered me to help a beloved pet!

I've reevaluated how I feed and care for my other pet's and have watched them benefit from what I've learned. This is a great book for anyone who loves their pets and wants to use proven methods of nutrition and care.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANSTATIC
Love the book! Very good reading, Dr. Goldstein's writing is not dry and boring making it a trail to get through. Very informative, if you have ever thought about giving your dog a healthier life this is a book you need to read and keep on your shelf for reference. I have already refered back to this book numerous times. And my dogs (3 Great Danes)are already looking and felling better than they have before. It has also taught me not to take everything at face value but explore your options. Just because it has always been done that way, does not mean it is the best way!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Path" less traveled... a refreshing approach to pet care!
I have been waiting SO long for a book like this! Little did I know that Dr. Goldstein had finally granted the hopes and wishes of people across the nation begging for an alternative to the drugs, disease, and unnecessary treatments plaguing our pets. His book is one enormous exposé on the veterinary and pet food industries!

**Highlights**
The first 4 chapters; if you read nothing else, I beg you to read chapters 1-4.
- Chapter 1 & 2 make the concept of disease and infirmity completely understandable. Basically, sickness is the absence of health! Restoring health, instead of squelching the symptoms of illness, is the only way to your pet's ultimate wellness, longevity, and quality of life.
- Chapters 3 & 4 are about food and vaccines respectively. Dr. Goldstein covers all of the basics of what is wrong with that bag of kibble in the closet, and why our companions deserve the best we can give them... not to mention the numerous health benefits of feeding them a wholesome food! In chapter 4 he goes on the expose the facts about vaccinations, why the could be HARMING our pets instead of helping them, and what vaccines are really necessary (if any).

Best Points:
· Very inspiring and motivating! If you've ever had excuses for doing things "just because I've always done it this way" this book will definitely change your perspective.
· Dr. Goldstein is a real person. Not gimmicky like other authors, he actually admits his faults and explains his own reasoning. He is extremely credible (see his credentials as a vet) and believable.
· The book is very well-written and easy to read
· Back section has an "Alphabet of Ailments" from allergies to worms, and how to treat them effectively with natural remedies
· The book is "open" and very fit-to-your-lifestyle

Things some people may be uncomfortable with:
· The "evidence" for his theories is largely anecdotal... but since half of healing and medicine is mystery, there is no way to test "wellness" or a degree of healing really. The volume of evidence is enormous, yet still the extremely scientifically minded may have a problem with it.
· He does discuss topics like animal "spirituality" which some may not agree with. He also talks about animal communicators and his own qualms about such things though, so it's fairly balanced.

An entire chapter is devoted to the "big C"... Cancer. From causes to cures he sheds an interesting light on the role of veterinary medicine in cancer.

Overall, this is THE best book I have read on the subject of healing in general. I urge any pet lover to read it, especially if you are skeptical about holistic/alternative therapies. It is explanatory, helpful, and inspiring!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Excellent book. Well organized. The information on commercial pet food was eye-opening. Dr. Goldstein provides a balanced viewpoint on a natural diet that allows the reader to decide what is best for each pet. I have read quite a few "holistic" approach pet books and this is the first one I have been VERY impressed with. I know I will use this book as a reference for many years and many more pets to come. I wish I had had this book when my "boys" were still puppies. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointingly limited by format
Numbers 3 and 4 of this series were updates of specific topics, much like the "current veterinary therapy" series. This, like Editions 1 and 2, attempts to cover all of zoo medicine in one volume. As this is a rapidly expanding body of knowledge, it is no longer really possible to fit into a single volume. There are very brief overviews of each species without enough depth present- this is not due to the authors, but the format. Especially disappointing is the apparent limitation on the number of references for each section. Providing references on where to look for further information would have made this book much more useful. Hopefully future editions will either show a return to the topic oriented format of 3 and 4, be a multi-volume set containing enough information to be useful, or at least contain sufficient references to be useful as a good bibliography.

5-0 out of 5 stars similar to 1st edition
This text is basically a new, up-to-date version of the 1st edition of Zoo and Wild Animal Medicine (which is out of print and difficult to come by). For that reason I think it is wonderful.
I do think the editor's review is slightly misleading because there is very little information regarding specific diagnoses and their treatments. Instead there are lists of diseases which different species are prone to getting and formulary charts for the different species. If you want detailed information about a specific disease, diagnostics, and various treatment options, this book is not ideal.
What this book is great for: species biology, husbandry, basic zoo medicine... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Natural Remedies that Really Work!
I ran across this book when my elderly dog was diagnosed with a heart murmur and heart disease. When conventional medicine couldn't help I decided to give natural medicine a try. I used some of the remedies suggested for heart disease and was frankly astounded at his improvement. We were very happy to have him with us for 5 more years than I expected. The book is easy to understand and ailments and their remedies are listed in alphabetical order in the back of the book. This is really a must have for every dog and cat owner that wants to find out how they can improve the health of their pet naturally.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very effective and practical self-help treatments
This book is very well organized and extremely easy to understand for the layman. Using the techniques suggested in the book I was able to cure my 12 year old cat from a 2 year bout with diabetes. The book descibes a variety of natural healing techniques that can be employed to deal with a wide range of ailments that pets often contract. There's no hocus pocus about this book, it's strictly a how to do it manual. I heartily recommend this book to anyone with an open mind to the power of herbs, acupuncture, massage and good nutrition. ... Read more

Book Description

Celebrate the return of the most beloved storyteller of our time!

The waiting is finally over. For the first time in over a decade, the world's favorite veterinarian, James Herriot, returns us in a twinkle to the rural green enclave of England called Yorkshire for more irresistible tales of animals and people.

At long last, another treat from Herriot!

In stories of wonders great and small, James reintroduces many old friends like Mrs. Pumphrey, his partner Siegfried Farnon, and of course, his wife Helen. But there are wonderful new faces too, especially his children Rosie and Jimmy, and his latest assistant, Calum Buchanan.

Herriot works his magic again!

Offering readers an even more intimate view of the life and dreams of a country vet than any of his previous volumes, James Herriot's Every Living Thing is a book that will warm your heart, make you laugh out loud, and feel so good you'll never want it to end.

Herriot really does love Every Living Thing...and so will you!

5-0 out of 5 stars indescribable
As gifted a story teller as he is a veterinarian, James Herriot has the rare ability to bring out every emotion known to the human race with a single magical flick of his pen. Every Living Thing is without a doubt one of the crowning achievements of a master, and is possessed by a single, true trait that is difficult to find in many commercial books- every single tale is told straight from the heart. You will never fail to laugh at the hilarious tales and cry at the most poignant moments. If you're an animal lover, or even just have a passing interest in animals, this is a book you will hold on to and re-read until the end of your days. Kudos, James Herriot, you are very much missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another warm winner from Herriot
James Herriot has an easy-going and warm writing style that is incredibly suited to his stories. He chronicles the animals and people he helps as an active veternarian in Yorkshire, England. As such, the stories are usually more about the people and their attachment to their pets and livestock than they are about the animals themselves. Although the time period is not explicitly mentioned and he jumps around in time a great deal, this book seems to cover the period right after his preceeding book (The Lord God Made Them All), the late 50s and early 60s. Herriot's children are now 6-10 years old and play an increasing role in his practice. He also includes a touching series of stories about his and his wife's attempts to tame some farm cats. Every Living Thing was Herriot's final full-length original book, and it is an excellent end to an excellent series.

4-0 out of 5 stars More from the Yorkshire veterinarian the world loves
The late Alf Wight aka James Herriot left a legacy of books that excites readers to this day (and I presume will do so for decades more.) His gentle, self-deprecating style of humor and the portraits of the Yorkshire Dales farmers and country people are amusing and interesting.

The four books, named after a hymn "All Creatures Great and Small" are joined by this fifth volume with similar stories. James (as Alf called himself) now has his own practice in Skeldale House, is married with two kids. The stories are very similar to the first four, with goof-ups, miracles, and funny tales. Somehow, these stories are not quite as hilarious as the first set, possibly because Mr. Herriot had written up most of the good stuff, or to represent the seriousness of raising two kids and having his own practice and being a settled man rather than a raw youth just out on his own. Nonetheless, if you lapped up all the "Creature" books, as I did, and you mourn the loss of Dr. Wight, who passed away in the 90's, then you will want to read these stories and vicariously enjoy more of the daily life of a country vet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every Living Thing
Every Living Thing is one of my all time favorite books. James Herriot's stories come to life and touch you in a way that no other author can. I share this book with as many people as possible and they all give rave reviews. This is a must for an animal lover!

5-0 out of 5 stars Laugh out loud
Expect to look like a lunatic if you read this book in public - I was sitting at a picnic table reading it today and kept snickering and smiling to myself at the chapter about the 'funny turns'. His books are always called 'quaint' and I agree, but they are also bold, vividly descriptive and so funnily true to life. All his books are great, this one included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for students and clinicians alike.
Dr. Tilley has again provided a helpful reference for Small Animal Cardiology that can also fit into a lab coat pocket. Not only is this a valuable source of information for students in clinics and for exam review, but also a quick reference for busy clinicians. Obviously EKG is only a part of a thorough cardiac evaluation, but it is often an important and underrated diagnostic tool. And for those of us who cannot always find a bic pen (vets will understand) when we need one, including a EKG ruler was a great touch! I strongly recommend this to any veterinarian interested in improving his/her EKG reading skills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise review of clinical behavior
This book is an extremely useful book on several levels. For the veterinary general practioner, this is a handbook that lives up to the title; the information can be found quickly and easily. For the veterinarian who has an interest in clinical behavior, the book has a large amount of useful indepth information. For the scientist who want to know more about clinical behavior, this book contains an up to date state of the field (in the year it was published). And finally for the veterinary behaviorist, this book has much to offer as well. I highly recommend this book for all graduating veterinarians. If you are a veterinarian and you are only going to have one behavior book in your library, this is it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nursing
This is an amazing text book and has been quite useful to me. It is packed full of day-to-day useful information on almost everything you need to know about veterinary nursing.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide
I was introduced to this book while volunteering at an animal clinic that had no regular veterinarian. The veterinarian would only cover emergencies and sterilizations, not any other problems. By using this easy to use volume with clear concise information, the other volunteers and I were able to help countless animals with a huge variety of illnesses. From help with signs of disease to learning how to properly bandage an ear, it was referenced time and time again. I immediately realized I needed my own copy. Although a bit pricey, it'll earn its keep rapidly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Nursing

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple and Easy to Understand
This book on equine massage therapy was very clear and easy to understand. It pinpointed specific places to do specific exercises, and gave clear pictures of the anatomy you were dealing with. How to do the exercises, and how to improve your work with the horse in general, was very well explained, and made sense for someone who is not an expert. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My veterinarian said this is the best book she uses!
I do cat rescue and needed a detailed reference book on veterinary medications. I asked my veterinarian what book she recommended and she said that this was the best book by far. She prefers it over other medical textbooks that costs hundrends of dollars. I purchased this book and use it all the time now. It has helped me resolve medication related questions in emergency situations. This book has more than paid for itself in the $$ is has saved me in veterinary bills. I highly recommend this book for anyone who needs access to information on veterinary medications, especially when it's a night or weekend and I cannot contact my veterinarian. This is a must have book for anyone who works with animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best drug handbook on the market!
I've had every edition of this drug handbook for about 10 years now, and I use it often. I've seen lots of "other" veterinary drug handbooks, but they pale in comparison to Plumb's. There's just the right amount of information here--not too much, not too little. Other handbooks seem relatively lacking in content.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't practice without it.
This is the only book that I have that I use every single day!

5-0 out of 5 stars great for vet students
I am a senior veterinary student and use this constantly on clinics. Its very helpful to look up medications that animals are already on and possible interactions with drugs you want to prescribe. Has drugs listed by generic and manufacturers names so they are quick to look up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just more of the same excellent stuff
If you are familiar with this book, this is just the latest update, so go and buy it. If you are not, you have been missing one of the best helps that a veterinary practice may have. It is simply a collection of monographs of 90% or so of the most used drugs in a veterinary hospital (YOU will have to get the other 10% and, I assure you, it will take plenty of your time). They include everything that a conciencious veterinarian wants to now, and then a little more. The language is simply enough for any professional to understand even if one's chemistry and biochemistry is a bit rusty. What are you doing reading this? Go and get it; your patients and you need it! ... Read more

Book Description

In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Nicholas Dodman does for feline psychology what he did for canines in his widely acclaimed The Dog Who Loved Too Much. Here he reveals the fascinating, and often frustrating, mind of one of our most popular--and certainly most independent--animal companions, and shows how we can coexist peacefully with even the stubbornest of cats.

What do you do about a cat determined to tear your sofa to shreds?Or one who gorges himself on your best running shoes . . . or attacks anyone who dares to open the refrigerator door?Drawing on remarkable real-life stories from his practice at the prestigious Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Dodman shares the unique, compassionate, dramatically successful treatment programs that have given problem cats a new lease on life . . . and their perplexed owners long-term solutions to even the most intractable disorders.

As any cat owner knows, changing a cat's behavior can seem like an impossible task. But contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained and cured of irritating habits and undesirable behaviors. The Cat Who Cried for Help shows how minor adjustments in diet, exercise regimen, and environment can effect dramatic breakthroughs in resolving almost any feline problem. From cat panic attacks to eating disorders, from litterbox aversion to depression and a wide range of feline phobias, Dr. Dodman has successfully treated and resolved these and many other heretofore untreatable behaviors.

Inside, you'll meet Ashley, the boss-cat who literally bites the hand that feeds him; Jonathan, the binge-eater; Rubles, the Abyssinian Jekyll and Hyde, pussycat one minute, man-eating tiger the next; and Thomas, the cat who cried for help--a little too loudly.Dr. Dodman's techniques are based on the most up-to-date research in pharmacology and feline behaviorism.Yet the primary objective of his treatments is to respect and protect the qualities of independence and dignity fundamental to a cat's nature.

Including descriptions of symptoms, treatment options, and tips on prevention, The Cat Who Cried for Help provides everything you need to know to ensure both you and your feline friend a long, happy, and healthy relationship. If you've ever wanted to better understand the nature of this mysterious, enigmatic, and fascinating creature, Dr. Dodman's book provides a penetrating look into the intriguing and intricate world of the cat in your life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Must read for frustrated cat owners!
I have four cats, all of whom have had behavioral problems due to abuse and/or abandonment issues. Reading this book gave me great advice and step by step guides on modifying inappropriate behavior. "The Cat who Cried for Help" is an entertaining and easy read that uses the author's own cases as examples of success and sometimes failure. I use the book often as a reference since each topic is broken into chapters with a clever title and funny case story to start.

For example, the chapter "The Writing on the Wall" deals with problems of kitty "bathroom" issues such as litter boxes, spraying/marking, UTI's, ect... Understanding why a cat does what it does, and what it's trying to tell me in the process has made our home a much happier, and cleaner, place! The importance the author puts on being patient is key to making this book successful. Solving feline problems doesn't happen over night- in our case it took about 5 months, but if you follow Dr. Dodman's advice and don't expect an immediate miracle, you will end up with a happy kitty (and owner)!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most important cat book available today!
Dr. Dodson addresses the behavioural problems which cause people to get rid of their cats! He deals logically with aggression and inappropriate urination. He discusses new medications with which most Vets are not yet familiar. Dr. Dodson's book and advice are invaluable. My Vet and I are currently working with Dr. Dodson (because I read this book and contacted him) to cure a terrible urination problem with one of my kitties!

4-0 out of 5 stars A readable resource for cat behavior
This book is well-written and anyone can understand where Dodman is coming from. It lends insight into the thoughts and emotions of a cat. There are explanations for the reasons behind the behavior and how to modify your cat's behavior into a more managable situation. As a cat owner my entire life, this book helps explain some things I was always left wondering. Instead of euthanizing your pet for a behavior that is innate, why not try to help them instead? Both owner and cat can learn to coexist in the same household.

A definite read for someone trying to figure out a behavioral problem in their cat.

5-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly fun read!
I had bought this book in anticipation of moving, with a new kitten in tow, and I wanted to make sure that I familiarized her with her new surroundings and was able to catch any behavioral problems early on. I was then surprised by how much FUN this book was to read! Dr. Dodman's case stories are really enjoyable and informative--almost like reading a little mystery. "Why's the cat doing this? What can we do now? Here's the answer!" He has a genuine knack for storytelling and at the same time provides valuable insight into the minds of our cats. I've been able to put several of his theories into action with my own cat, and we're both very happy with the results! I highly recommend this book even if you *don't* think you have any behavioral issues with your cat--it's stuff worth knowing, and a great read to boot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Felines
I bought this book to learn more about agression problems in cats as one of mine has on occasion been agressive to me. The case studies presented in this book are fascinating. After reading about those crazy cats, mine seemed quite normal.

I've taken a slightly different approach toward dominance agression than in the book. But, I agree with the author that cats can express dominance agression just like dogs.

The authors use of mood-altering medications for cats is quite informative. ... Read more
