5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
At our house, you never know what the kids will bring home next or the parents for that matter. This book has been a quick reference on any new species introduced to our household as far as domesticated animals---we do have a gecko and unfortuately there is no info on exotics in this book. It has become a well worn book as we thumbed through finding answers to problems and also on ways to prevent future problems. We have 3 cats, 2 dogs, a bunch of chickens(cochins and silkies), 2 pigs, a pygmy goat, a shetland sheep and an African Fat tailed Gecko so we needed a book that would cover a lot and this has answered many questions. It has more than paid for itself----if it saves just one vet visit!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE ANSWERS CAN ALL BE FOUND IN HERE
This book more than paid for itself in the first 15 minutes of reading. As the owner of 2 cows, 3 cats, 7 dogs, & 8 goats, I have been using this book as my animal bible. It's written in terms that everyone can understand and the directions are clear and precise. It's saved me many calls and visits to my vet. This is a MUST HAVE book for every pet or animal owner.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent for the lay person
I recently checked this book out from the library, and now I must have a copy of my own. I have recently started raising show pigs, and believe me this book will help alot. I have already learned some neat things, and look forward to learning more. ... Read more

Book Description

Dr. Witiak’s stories of the bond between the veterinarian, client, and pet take the reader into the exam room and on house calls to experience the laughable calamities, miscues, and surprises as well as the personal sorrows, revelations, and joys that treating animals can bring. This is a book of vignettes and personal commentary by a devoted veterinarian who is dedicated both to the science of his profession and to his personal belief in the importance of being loved and loving.

Dr. Witiak makes readers laugh when he checks a small dog’s breath and gets bitten on the nose and then makes them cry when he hugs an old man who has just lost his faithful canine friend. The stories give the reader a deeper understanding of how the unconditional love of our animals enables us to love each other better.

This is a joyous ride where readers bounce from one event to the other just like the veterinarian bounds from exam room to exam room — each with its own surprises. Readers discover just how organic caring is as Dr. Witiak works his magic, enjoying his tongue-in-cheek observations and self-deprecating humor along the way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every dog owner should have this book
"First Aid for Dogs" was one of three similar books I bought and is clearly the best, by a head and shoulders margin. It has almost 200 pages of information about a variety of conditions that can occur at home, in the neighborhood, or in the field. It makes very clear what to look for (symptoms) and then gives a helpful "decision tree" (if this is present, then do or look for ---; if that is not present, then look for or do ---). It is also very clear about what options you have in contacting a vet: Now! Same day. Within 24 hrs. Soon. Phone for advice.

It very clearly tells how to check symptoms. It covers almost every imaginable condition a dog owner would usually encounter. In the money it will save in trips to the vet that weren't needed, using this book will save its cost many times over.

The book is very well organized into sections, Part 1, What to do first, how to make splints, etc,; Part 2, What to do next, checking symptoms, what to observe; Part 3, First aid for various emergencies; Part 4, improving health, how to give/apply meds. The line drawing illustrations are simple, clear, and helpful. The index is comprehensive and useful.

By comparison, one of the other books I bought (published by a university press and written by vet school faculty), is higher priced, has about one fourth the pages, and contains much less than a twentieth the information. "Always have injuries examined by a veterinarian" is neither sufficient or particularly helpful advice. For poisoning, it recommends "veterinary advice should be sought."

The third first aid book I bought was for outdoor dogs (I have a Lab). It has a little less than half the pages that Fogle's book contains. The topics it covers are adequately treated but I've found nothing covered that is not also in Fogle's book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Literally, a life saver.
When my wife, Amy, and I bought Sparky, our pet pekinese, we picked up this book, though we hoped to never need it. It was so clearly written and easy to use that the entire family read it. When our oldest son, Ryan, used it to save Sparky from choking on peanut butter, we realized just how valuable the advice in this book is. Thank you, Bruce and Amanda, for saving our dog's life.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT TO VET.TECHNICIAN!!
I'm a freshman in veterinary medical college. And I go to my seniors' animal hospital every weekend for studying and assitanting them. Before I assitant them, I had to know about treating animals with the right way. Then my seniors gave this book to me. I think this book is very good for Vet.technician. This book is really detailed for every part of the way of treating pets. I am sure that this book will be helpful to you, veterinary technician or a student often doing assistance in hospital just like me. But i am sure it will not help any junior or senior studying veterinary medicine.

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy effort
This book reveals a good intent that fell slightly short. The authors evidently know their stuff very well and describe many procedures with meticulousness. However, necessary details are missing on ocassion, like where to locate the vessel they recommend to inject. The illustations are satisfactory but sometimes insufficient. One wonders whether photographs could have been better in these cases. I missed some procedures that are common in veterinary clinics today like x-rays and some small surgery techniques that are common in a clinical setting. For examaple, I would have liked to find some pointers on how to operate an x-ray machine. The book is very useful and well worth buying it, but the authors could make it even better if they surveyed the needs of their colleagues before attempting the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Manual of Clinical Procedures on the Dog, Cat and Rabbit
I am a director of a veterinary technology program and this is a required text. It outlines the "how-to-do" of procedures as simple as cephalic venipuncture to complicated procedures such as gastrotomy tube placement. The value of this book lies in the fact that it lists every supply or piece of equipment you will need to perform a procedure and then walks you through it step by step. The illustrations are awesome. This book would be a valuable reference for a practitioner or technician who wants to perform a procedure for the first time or needs a refresher on the procedure. The inclusion of rabbits to this edition is a welcome addition as it outlines procedures likely performed in practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, detailed reference on dog anatomy!
I initially didn't like this book because I was intimidated by it. Quite frankly, it has A LOT of information. I was required to buy this book as a 1st year vet student taking anatomy and grew to really enjoy this book. I will say that is very tedious to read straight-through, but for reference, it is unbeatable. Every student and clinician should have a copy. The pictures are wonderful and the color-coding of the vessels and nerves make the structures very easy to visualize. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars The anatomy bible!
You will either love this book or hate it. I loved it mainly for the pictures, which it has a ton of. They are well labeled and there are usually several different views. I found them very, very helpful in identifying structures in anatomy lab. Our professor even required us to have at least one copy at every dissection table every day!
Most of the pictures are hand drawn in black & white (sometimes with red arteries, blue veins, and yellow nerves). They are some of the best anatomy drawings I have seen and are not too difficult for me to visualize three-dimensionally. There is also a section on bones and the skull in the beginning of the book that includes radiographs.
I think the reason some people use this book only as a doorstop is because the text can be overwhelmingly detailed. Additionally, its large size (1113 pages) makes it very heavy to carry around. There is a much smaller book with pictures out of Miller's, the Guide to the Dissection of the Dog, which has many fewer pictures and was therefore not my book of choice.
I would highly recommend Miller's Anatomy of the Dog to every beginning veterinary student, unless you are pretty sure you don't want to carry around such a heavy book. Use it for the pictures rather than the text and you won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indepth guide to canine anatomy
I found Miller's guide to be very helpful. It provides thorough explanations of anatomical structures, as well as wonderful diagrams/drawings that serve as a helpful guide in dissection lab. I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to fine tune their knowledge of dog anatomy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you love your cat you need to buy this book.
This book should be called Feline Nutritional Education for Dummies, because if you are feeding your pet cat food you definitely need this knowledge.

In brief, this book gives case studies of sick felines and how through nutritional healing they became well. This was achieved through feeding a diet of human grade ingredients along with nutritional supplements. The cheapest place by far to purchase supplements online is "iherb".

The holistic veterinarians that give information in this book are the finest in the United States.
Many of these veterinarians give recipes for a cooked homemade diet. However, the ultimate diet is raw, but in order for one to eventually transition their feline there, you first need to build a strong foundation, that this book gives you.

You will become motivated to change by understanding what is in pet food, then you will get the knowledge building blocks on how to make the nutritional transition to a true feline species appropriate diet.

Moreover, this book gets right to the point and may be difficult for many people to accept.
Many individuals are in denial that pet food just cannot be bad for their pet, if you are a person that is convinced through deductive argument based on scientific facts then this book is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book- a must for people who love their cat
I can not say enough good things about this book. I refer to it more times a day than I can count. It contains vital information that all pet lovers should know, from the quality of foods we feed them to the treatments for illnesses they get. I unfortunatly got this book after I lost my beautiful Ragdoll cat to fatty liver disease. Had I gotten it while he was alive I believe there could have been hope to save him. I still have three other cats though and this book is my "Bible" when it comes to their care. My other Ragdoll was on a "prescription" diet that was supposed to be good for her. After 4 months of diarrhea (that the vet kept giving pills for which did no good), I found this book. I changed her diet, gave her milk thistle, some probiotics (for one week), and she made a 100 percent turn around. This book also contains many telephone numbers where you can order herbs if you aren't lucky enough to live in an area where pet health stores (or people health stores) are available. I highly recommed this book. It is informative, thorough and will really open your eyes to your pets health.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Life-Saver
Finding this book was a Godsend. After purchasing several other "natural cat care" books, this book exceeded all expectations and made the others a waste of money. This is the only book you'll ever need to keep your cat healthy, or in my case...to save its life. After my cat was diagnosed with a life-threatening disease called Fatty Liver Syndrome, I followed the suggestions of several veterinarians in this book, as well as utilizing "conventional" medicine with my local veterinarian and her blood enzyme levels were normal after only 3 weeks! Normally, recovery takes twice as long. This book offers alternative and supplemental care that is infomative and practical. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome addition
Veterinarians' Guide to Natural Remedies for Cats is a welcome addition for those who wish to pursue natural remedies for their cats. It gives the reader a variety of choices in each section, so that one is able to select one thing, and if that does not accomplish all that one hopes, one is able to make another choice. Many modalities are mentioned including homeopathy, acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage, and herbal medicine. There is discussion of a healthy diet as well. Mr. Zucker interviewed a number of holistic vets from around the country and compiled their suggestions into this much awaited volume. I can recommend it highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good news for cats :-)
As a health writer, I know that pharmaceuticals can be very dangerous compounds. But for years, I overlooked the fact that drugs aren't good for pets either. Your cat can probably benefit from safer alternative treatments. Martin Zucker has put together a wonderful book with top veterinarians. Don't keep alternative and holistic treatments to yourself -- share them with your pet! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars An OK Parasitology teaching guide for classroom use
This book has its place as a basic general student Parasitology textbook, which I suspect may be its intent... When compared for overall content to other parasitology reference manuals, such as Georgi's Parasitology for Veterinarians (an excellent reference for professional veterinary use if looking for the parasite's background, though not for its ID) I'd give it about a "C" rating. However, I simply cannot recommend this book for use as a reference guide for specifically identifying the parasite eggs or oocysts seen on a microscope slide. Why? One reason is that many of the eggs in the book are artists' hand-drawn, stylized renditions. These cannot compete with actual photographs, wherein the nuances of fine photographic detail set one species of worm egg apart from often quite similar eggs of other species... And, there are inconsistencies in the presentation... On one page, for example, a few hand-drawn egg illustrations show the comparative size of various egg species. Actual size of egg type 'A', for example, is noted to be somewhat smaller than that of egg type 'B'. A few pages later, however, egg 'A', the smaller of the two on the comparative size page, appears in a photo to be about 4X larger than egg type 'B', shown in another photo on that same page. This is critical because often two species of eggs can be so similar in appearance that to accurately determine one species from another for proper eradication, size really DOES matter! Some of the egg photos that are available (and not all are), such as the Haemonchus contortus egg, are of poor quality, thus of no real use for reference... There has been an ongoing livestock parasite management crisis lately on an international scale, because lack of a good photo ID reference book has caused eggs from other worm species to be mis-identified as those of Haemonchus contortus. The egg of one specific and very nasty worm, a Liver fluke called Fasciola hepatica, is often misidentified as Haemonchus, but it unfortunately does NOT respond to the same wormer that wipes Haemonchus out. As a result, the Fasciola hepatica worms, treated with wormers that kill off Haemonchus, refuse to die! The host animal is then determined to be harboring a 'resistant' strain of Haemonchus, and is recommended for culling. But in this book the egg from the Liver fluke is actually found many pages away from the Haemonchus egg, and listed under another host species altogether. Sadly, as a reference to be used for accurate identification of the eggs/oocysts of internal parasites seen on a microscope slide, this book cannot take the place of the out-of-print 1st thru 5th Editions of Sloss' Veterinary Clinical Parasitology.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent addition to the veterinary literature
This is the 2001 fifth edition of a book first published in 1989. That alone tells you that veterinarians like it. To me, it is a rather surprising book. It is divided into 17 sections, the first devoted to methods of parasitological diagnosis, 14 devoted to parasites of every kind of mammals and birds (domestic, wild, and in-between) and reptiles, and 2 to artifacts and tables. The sections devoted to animals include clear drawings and excellent black and white photographs of the diagnostic elements for the common parasites (eggs, larva, spcimens, etc.), drawings of the life cycles, lists of the common antiparasitic drugs with dosis and indications, list of the zoonosis associated with the respective animal, and a very brief summary of the morphology, importance, diagnosis, treatment, and sometimes prevention of each parasite. For the abundance and quality of the photographs, one tends to consider this books as a diagnosis manual, but it is much more. It becomes closer to an encyclopedia of important practical issues of veterinary parasitology, condensed into 235 pages, at a ridiculous low price. Whom is useful for? Certainly for the veterinarian who wants to identify a parasitic infection but also for someone who needs to remember the latests treatment or some forgotten detail of a parasitic infection. I suspect that it should be quite welcome by the veterinary student who pays due attention to the lectures and then wants a condensed summary of the important points. A surprising book but very good and useful indeed

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saves me money!
If you want to reduce your livestock health costs by doing your own fecal exams for parasites, this book is full of information and photos that you cannot do without! Thanks to the spiral binding, it lies flat beside my microscope for easy reference and accurate identifications. I use mine monthly!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicely Done!
OK, I admit that I am just a little biased in this review - My dad is the author and I took some of the pictures that illustrate it! That doesn't change how much I think that this is a very handy (and comparatively inexpensive) book to have. It is copiously illustrated with both drawing and photos and is divided up by the host animal.

Personally, I end up referring to this book at least once a week and have heard many of the vet students that I know say about the same thing.

So, if you are a vet student or work in some field that comes into contact with parasites, I would say that you need this book. It is designed to be used, not kept on the shelf, and it deserves to be. Exceedingly streamlined and useful - especially the concise descriptions of each parasite illustrated by a photograph :).

Cheers!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parasitology
This book was very useful while studying veterinary parasitology. There are large photos of most eggs which make studying for lab praticals helpful. In addition it is divided into sections by animal so you can see the most common parasites for that particular species. Each parasite also has a discriptive life cycle diagram next to it. I would highly recomend this book as a helpful addition to the parasitology lab. ... Read more

It's a lot easier for the layperson to tell when a fellow human is feeling poorly than it is to understand the inner workings of a cat. For one thing, people use words to tell you what hurts and when it started. And for another thing, we, as fellow people, have a little insight into what's healthy human behavior and what isn't. When the toddler cries and then vomits lunch, we sense something's not right, even if the child can't verbalize the problem. But when your cat brings up a hairball, does that mean she is ill? When your cat meows, it's hard to know if it means "Hey, pet me," or "I feel rotten."

To know when cats are acting oddly, you need to know what normal is. The Veterinarians' Guide to Your Cat's Symptoms starts off describing a healthy cat body, from skin, hair, eyes, ears, and teeth to the inner workings of the cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, respiratory, and musculoskeletal systems. This picture of feline health is followed by a chapter on how to keep those systems healthy, with advice on choosing a veterinarian, plus vaccinations, spaying and neutering, nutrition, and litter boxes.

Part 2 does an excellent job of covering accidents, medical emergencies, and diseases that could threaten your cat. This section discusses broken bones, burns, and poisoning; conditions such as hypoglycemia, pneumonia, seizures, and pyometra; as well as infectious and parasitic diseases. For each, it tells you what to look for in your cat and when to dash off to the veterinary hospital for emergency treatment. There's a chapter on feline first aid, as well.

And if you suspect your kitty isn't up to snuff but aren't sure? Part 3 is where you can ensure that your cat's behavior is normal, with more than 130 common feline symptoms and flow charts explaining how to interpret them. Associated signs, possible conditions, and recommended actions are listed for each symptom. Perhaps your cat is showing signs of depressed appetite, with difficulty breathing and possibly coughing as well. These could be signs of cardiac disease, pneumonia, or even lung cancer, and a trip to the emergency clinic for x-rays is strongly suggested. On the other hand, maybe your cat is eating wool. The chart says this condition (termed Wool Eater, a form of compulsive behavior) is not unusual for Siamese cats, but could lead to vomiting or intestinal obstruction; the recommended action is to put the wool out of kitty's reach, and maybe see a veterinarian for behavior-modification medication. Symptoms such as depression and lethargy are treated in depth, as are diarrhea, gagging, lameness, nasal discharge, and various sorts of vomiting.

With appendices that list congenital defects and disorders, poisonous household products, and a glossary of veterinary medical terms, this is a remarkably useful reference for anyone who loves cats. --Stephanie Gold ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall book.
This book really helped us out because we thought our cat was not only crazy, but also sick. Sick and crazy is a bad combo. Turned out she just had allergies and typical cat spaz behavior. The book goes in depth to let you know what is going on with your pet so you don't have to shell out the big bucks to a vet. If you do have to go to a vet for something you can help them pinpoint the problem much quicker if you have done some research using the book beforehand.
Worth the money if you own cats.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST IF YOU NEED HELP FOR YOUR CAT BUDDY
.
I read everything I could find at the local library concerning diagnosis of symptoms displayed by my cat. The technical books in the library were useless because of the plethora of technical terms that the average layman like me hasn't a clue on the meaning of. Also, the organization, or should I say lack of organization, of the other books made them tedious to follow. Many references and cross-references ad infinitum. I had to tease out answers to simple questions and, even then, didn't fully understand the points they were trying to make. I've had cats for most of my life and thought I was an expert, but I was stumped and worried about my little friend's symptomatic behavior. I needed help, and fast.

Five minutes with the guide to symptoms by Garvey, et al, answered my immediate question and led to a quick solution. The book is filled with well rendered drawings that illustrate and complement the text. The people who put this book together obviously know cats intimately and understand cat behavior. The writing is easy to understand and to the point. It also explains the "whys" behind the facts. The table at the back is both comprehensive and easy for the average reader to understand. This is a book to be USED, not just read.

No book is perfect but this one comes close and gave me what I needed. ....I'm totally satisfied with it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but!
This is exactly what we expected it to be: A very helpful listing of symptoms/signs your pet could be displaying and what to make of it.
One major drawback of the volume is a political one: We are happy to live in a country decidedly more civilized where the surgical removal of a cat's claws is simply illegal. We could have well done without any advice regarding this disgusting notion: I mean if you are fonder of your furniture than of a living (pet or no) animal, then please get more furniture, not more pets...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference. Contains much valuable information.
The unique chart form in the second half of this book provides cat ownerns with an invaluable quick reference when a cat is ailing. My cats, like most, often do not complain when they are not feeling well, and I must figure out what's wrong. This is an excellent, helpful guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars From Eventing USA Magazine, April/May 2003
"One of the people out there studying horses is Dr. Waring, a professor at Southern Illinois University. He uses big words such as polyphasic, but defines them, "The daily sleep cycle of horses is polyphasic, that is, with more than one period of sleep occurring per 24-hour period." He gives the academically correct citations of studies, yet describes the results in language the rest of us can understand. I dare any horseperson of any experience level to read it and not learn something."

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-to-Read..Packed with Useful Information
This is a great source book for veterinarians, students of animal sciences, especially those interested in animal behaviour and researchers needing a reference book. Every topic has extensive references from both the recent and older literature. If you want to know some fact about normal horse behaviour such as how long a foal suckles, duration of copulation, how much an adult horse sleeps - the experimental data will most likely be in this book. There are numerous tables, illustrations and photographs and a comprehensive index and bibliography.
The first edition of this book as published in 1983 and this second edition has been updated in every section. There are new sections on ecological influences on activity patterns, habitat utilization, social behaviour and reproduction. An expanded section on applied ethology and behavioural considerations for management, horse well-being and health is a useful addition.
The book is in seven parts consisting of three to five chapters. The index in the front of the book gives a clear understanding of what subjects are covered in each part. Part I covers the ancestry, special senses and motor patterns of the horse with a useful table on horse taxonomy and related species of living equids. There are detailed line drawings and definitions of all the motor patterns. In the discussion of the special senses, the horse's use of them is put into the ecological, morphological and physiological contexts. There is also detailed descriptions, including good drawings of the different gaits. Part II includes the development of behaviour patterns: play, post- and peri-natal development, learning, memory and often difficult to find data on foal development. The section on learning covers useful information on habituation, classical conditioning and instrumental conditioning (operant conditioning). Maintenance activities (resting, sleep, ingestion, elimination, comfort behaviours) are discussed in Part III. A term used that I found in appropriate, was 'self-indulgent' to describe sunning, shelter seeking, licking, nibbling, scratching and rubbing - these are maintenance behaviours. An interesting section is included on the symbiotic relationships of horses with birds, such as cattle egre, and humans.
The section on reproductive behaviour (Part IV) is full of useful data which covers the sexual behaviours of mares and stallions and a detailed account of maternal behaviour. Both normal and abnormal behaviours are discussed. The stimuli that can affect sexual behaviour are commented on, including age, colour and sexual signals.
Social behaviour in Part V covers herd behaviour, social attachment, home range and territoriality, social dominance and agnostic behaviour. Mare-foal and foal-mare attachments are discussed and there is a small section on interspecies relationships. The excellent line drawings of facial expressions, head and ear positions add useful information. Part VI, the interaction of horses and their environment, includes an excellent section on the influence of native horses on various environments. However, the destructive effect of introduced feral horses in countries like Australia is not mentioned - this would have completed the discussion. The chapter on ecological influences and the effects on reproduction and social behaviour is a useful addition.
The expanded section (Part VII) on applied ethology provided behavioural considerations for management and insight regarding behavioural indicators of horse health and well-being. An appendix after this chapter categorizes many equine behavioural signs and possible problems they may indicate. The behavioural signs include facial expressions, posture, changes in motor co-9ordination, changes in maintenance behaviour and social behaviour.
There is no specific section devoted to behaviour problems -these are discussed in the appropriate chapters along with the normal behaviour. This arrangement works well and gives a good understanding of how the normal behaviour has changed.
This is an easy-to-read, hard-back book, packed with useful information written by an author, who not only has conducted research, but is also an educator. I am lucky to have it on my shelf - Associate Professor, Animal Behaviour and Welfare, School of Veterinary Science, The University of Queensland -- Australian Veterinary Journal April 2003

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend (to) all horse owners and horse professionals
Understanding horses' behavior is something that all people who own or work with horses want to be able to do successfully. Our own observations have taught us that horses remember their experiences and make associations that can stay with them their entire lives. George Waring, a founder of the Animal Behavior Society and an educator at Southern Illinois University, explores a horse's ability to learn and remember as well as examines all aspects of horse behavior in the wild and in the managed stable environment. Although written by an academic, Horse Behavior, 2e is an enjoyable and accessible book that takes the reader from the horse's ancestry to behavioral manipulation and everyday horse concerns.

I particularly enjoyed the sections on learning and memory and would recommend that all horse owners and horse professionals read Horse Behavior, 2e, if not in its entirety, than simply for these chapters. Waring has thoroughly researched the available data in this area (from the late 70s to the 90s), all which is beneficial to horse people working with (and building trust with) horses. Although worthwhile for all, Horse Behavior, 2e is a must for horse breeders, Waring presents a comprehensive study of sexual traits, behaviors, and anomalies in feral herds as well as at home in the barn. Horse Behavior, 2e is one of the first books that I have read that freely explores and identifies stallions' and mares' sexual behaviors and parenting patterns.

The first edition was published in 1983, the second this past fall. There are several new sections including chapters on horse management, ecology, habitation, and social behavior. I read Horse Behavior, 2e straight through, but each section stands independently and can be used easily as a reference text. The only downside to this book is that the photographs are not of the highest quality. Those photographs depicting feral herds are understandably insufficient but others illustrating animal husbandry could have been better and more numerous. That aside, I strongly encourage all horse people to give Horse Behavior. 2r a place of prominence on the bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
Horse Behavior, 2nd edition, is a very well researched book that
addresses a through review of normal horse behavior. Dr. aring brings together references from a wide variety of disciplines, often from very difficult to get sources, and integrates them with his own research into a comprehensive picture of the horse. Each chapter is well orgainzed in its contents, resulting in a book that will be an excellent reference. This is a "must have" for any serious student of horse behavior and for those who just enjoy the animal.

5-0 out of 5 stars Immense knowledgebase of info on K9 behavior
I got a new puppy about 6 months ago. This was just about a 2 year process that involved searching out a specific breed that fit my personality and lifestyle and reading piles (Probably $500 worth) of books about raising puppies, training, specific breed books, etc. Mainly because I have always been deathly afraid of owning that unruly dog would be a nightmare to have around the house.

Of the 20 books that I have, this book is by far the most in depth and well researched of all. Most books on the subject of dogs in general are short overviews that should take care of some specific needs, such as potty training, obedience, tricks, etc. This book has a culmination of 100+ years of scientific research and other case studies of not only dogs but of the behavior mentally and physically of other creatures and how they apply to dogs. There is so much information to soak in, its incredible. I read through it occasionally had to sit back in awe thinking about what i've just read and how many things make sense now.

I seriously think that most books will get 90% of dog owners by without a problem. This book is for those 10%, or breeders, trainers who need to have that extra level of knowledge. I'd compare it to needing a cupfull of knowledge and receiving 5 gallons instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
The author succesfully tries to offer a thorough and detailed view of what is known and what isn't known about dog behavior and learning. His approach is above all scientific, which doesn't mean he avoids phenomena like ESP etc., nor does he simply give a description of the autorities' viewpoints. Lindsay also carefully analyses everything commonly accepted by laymen and experts, without resorting to emotional arguments. His systematic and straightforward 'nothing to hide' approach as well as his concern to include all practices and opinions certainly makes this book an authoritative study which counterbalances a lot of 'extreme' books on dog training (like Jean Donaldsons controversial book 'the culture clash' or the Koehler books).

For everything said in the book, scientific research and logical reasoning serves as basis, and sentimentality doesn't get a chance. Lindsay clearly stresses the reasons behind behavioral tactics and leaves the choice to the reader, providing all scientific facts necessary to support your decision. His view on the use of aversives is the most enlightening and waterproof explication I've read on why, how and when to use it -- or not...

Lindsay concentrates a lot on theoretical models to understand all kinds of phenomena. He never annoyed by giving too much information. Monuments of psychology like Skinner and Thorndike are equally critically analyzed as less famous men and at all time Lindsay remains consistent in his application of a thorough scientific approach to clearify and explain.

It isn't a cheap book, but it certainly lived up to my (high) expectations. The reference section at the end of each chapter provides a good means of exploring more studies and Lindsay doesn't hesitate to give suggestion for further reading. He acknowledges without hesitation the accomplishments of other people without idealizing them (he criticizes Skinners and Thorndikes view on punishment etc.).

I think it will take a long time before a more open and thorough book on dog behavior will appear. Therefore, if you want a book that gives a complete and detailed account of what is known on dog behavior and that provides a solid basis to expand your knowledge (even very rare phenomena are treated in detail), I would certainly recommend this book. The only negative thing about it I could think of, is the price -- and even then...

5-0 out of 5 stars most complete book yet on training and behavior
I am a "pet dog owner" who became fascinated by training and how dogs learn. Lindsay's book is a godsend. Having read a lot of the dog literature over the last 15 years, including struggling through some of the classics like Scott and Fuller, I was left with questions about what theories and practices were valid, and which had been superceded by further research that perhaps I hadn't discovered yet.

Lindsay puts the entire science of dog training and behavior into perspective, with astonishing completeness, brilliant organization, and elegant writing. He sorts through the history of our knowledge of dogs, discriminating between that which is good science and that which is not-so-good science. He compares and contrasts the theories and experiments of every person who has had anything to say that's relevant to what we know about dogs, including those from the fields of human and other species learning.

I especially appreciated the outlines at the beginning of every chapter, and the bibliographies at the end of every chapter (as well as at the end of the book). Some of the content is of special interest to me, and he makes it easy for me to go straight to the original sources.

His discussion of aversive training is outstanding, clarifying what has been a much misunderstood area in the last few years. And in spite of the scientific approach ("what do we really know"), Lindsay is able to discuss the softer issues of animal awareness and mysticism with touching grace.

The sheer quantity of literature that Lindsay has read and digested - and summarized for our benefit - is absolutely mindboggling. This book is a must-read for anyone who has a serious interest in dogs. ... Read more
