Book Description

In this practical and entertaining guide, the top veterinarians and animal experts in the country offer more than 1,000 effective tips for treating common pet problems, such as: allergies, bad breath, ear mites, fleas, itchy skin, paw problems, teething pain, weepy eyes, and wounds. But, much more than a guide to the physical and emotional problems of pets, <The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats also provides solutions to some of the toughest behavior problems, letting pet owners know when it is necessary to visit the vet--and what they can do until they get there. Since the health needs of dogs and cats are often entirely different, there are also specific tips for both cats and dogs, along with more than 75 easy-to-follow illustrations. Having this ultimate do-it-yourself pet-care book is like having a veterinarian on call 24 hours a day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must have for pet owners
We have a couple of animals - 2 dogs and 3 cats. This book has saved us so much time and stress and money! We are able to get an idea of what is wrong with our animals while waiting for our vet appointment. This takes a lot of the worry away from us knowing that there is no immediate danger. Our neighbors are amazingly envious of this book, so we are going to get each of the a copy when we move.

3-0 out of 5 stars This book is a great reference guide for any pet owner.
I have three dogs and each is different, this book has given me lots of helpful hints. It gives you enough information to know when it's time to see a vet, or if you can handle a situation on your own. But never leads you to believe it takes the place of your vet. Loads of information for a dog or cat owner. I am very pleased with my choice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice for Pet Owners
This book is filled with good advice for pet owners. Almost every type of pet health problem is discussed in this book. Unfortunately, because the book covers both dogs and cats some of the information is brief. This is a good reference book for pet owners. I would recommend this book to people who own both a dog and a cat and need a good overview of pet health. If you have only a dog, or only a cat, you might want to get a health book that is more detailed for your type of animal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should I call the Vet?
Ever consult one of those many little medical books to find out whether or not a condition you may have is simply trivial or cause for alarm? I think we all have at one time or another and this book, The Doctors Book of Home Remedies for Dogs and Cats is similar. Why is my pet being destructive? Is a cyst a serious thing? How do I clip nails on an animal with dark nails? WHEN SHOULD I CALL THE VET?

This comprehensive volume contains over 1,000 tips including multiple suggestions on aging, barking, car chasing, drooling, fighting, hair balls, itching, meowing, noise anxiety, overweight, poisoning, ringworm, spraying, ticks, urinary tract infections, vision problems, worms, etc. It is not only a useful do-it-yourself book, but one that also clearly lays out guidelines as to when one should take a pet to the Vet. A must have reference for the dog and/or cat owner. A great "peace of mind" book to have on hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars It could have been better
This book could be an encyclopedia of home remedies for dogs and cats. Over 300 pages cover perhaps all common health problems, which are listed alphabetically thus making it easy to find something, from birthing to asthma, fears, fever, car sickness, cataracts, as well as behavior problems such as chewing, car chasing, jealousy, house-training and much much more.

The only disadvantage in my opinion, is that everything is briefly mentioned, taking only a couple of pages for each subject. The authors could have expanded, making this book the only one a pet owner would ever need.

I do recommend it though to every house with a dog or a cat because it covers almost every illness and trouble you will come across. An experienced owner will find it interesting for the house library, but if you are a beginner you may want to use this book as an addition, "supplement". For beginners I strongly recommend "What your dog is trying to tell you". ... Read more

Open the front cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual). There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital. It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning), as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory, and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics, and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about, identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to take to best insure your dog's good health.--Stephanie Gold ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for every dog lover....
Once in a while a book comes along which in the field of practical applications... is a real treasure. This is one of those books. Full of photos and easy to read text, not to mention helpful advice, "this is it"-- for the dog owner who really cares. It will not turn you completely from being independent of your vet, but it will help in determining which symptoms and cases where you would just have to run to him. For example, in the section "Intestines", it describes the most common irregularities, like diarrhea, the color, consistency, odor, frequency, condition of dog, common causes, and finally the treatment section. And it does not stop there. It will then give related problems about the intestines, from malabsorption syndromes to colitis, obstructions, constipation, voluntary retention, mechanical blockage, damaged nerves, flatulence and coprophagia (yeech!), et.al. And that is just a section, as I said, under Intestines. Whether you have one dog, or several kennels, professional breeder, backyard breeder, or no breeder at all, and just interested in the well-being of man's best friend, it will turn you from a feeling of uncertainty into a confident owner. It's the "leash" you can do.

This revised and expanded edition is one of my prime sources of information regarding the health of my dogs. It will save the owner, as it has saved me from needless worries, (or make it worse, depending really on the personality of the owner), and a lot of expenses. Read it, you'll like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dog Owners Home Veterinary Handbook
An incredible resource. This excellent book provides dog owners with a wealth of practical, accurate information to help guide reactions to symptoms. We now go to the vet much more informed, and are also able to better appreciate the care the vet gives. The section on poisons is extremely helpful, giving the nefarious and varied symptoms good description, and offering effective home remedies which add valuable time to you getting your pet into treatment.

All dog owners should own, and read thoroughly, this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars The first aid information is almost useless
I was very disappointed with this book, but I suppose it serves a certain purpose. I went to several bookstores looking for a first aid guide for dogs, and this seems to be the standard offering. It includes information about first aid, but it isn't suitable for use in a first aid situation. Instead, it's more of a book for bathroom readers and do-it-yourselfers. I really don't know why the authors chose to include first aid in this book. It must have been for the sake of comprehensiveness -- they must have included it not so it would be useful, but so no one would ask why it was missing.

First of all, the pictures are a joke. They're small, they're in black-and-white, and if you don't read the captions, you can't even tell what you're looking at. When you have an injured dog to take care of, you don't want to make decisions based on Rorschach blobs. Clear drawings or _very_ well done color photos are standard for presenting human first aid methods.

Second, the decision flowcharts are unhelpful. After looking at several of them, I can't imagine using them in an emergency. Try to answer this question: "Is the dog in distress?" Huh? Some dogs seem to be in distress 24/7. Others will injure themselves without complaint if they think it pleases you. Can you imagine trying to translate the word "distress" into concrete terms while your dog is bleeding? The word might have a precise definition elsewhere in the book, but a good first aid guide doesn't require you to do research in the middle of an emergency.

Third, I failed in ten minutes of looking to locate information on the simple injury that brought to my attention my need for such a book. My dog's paws swelled up and started to peel after our first run in summer heat. Strangely, the index didn't send me to a central place for paw injuries. It seems that you have to have a tentative diagnosis before you can find any information. I looked up "blisters" and didn't find anything. I flipped through the book trying to pick up a sense of the organization, which led me to some first aid pages but no information about paws.

It turned out that his injuries were burns, a common paw injury that would deserve a place in a book a fifth the size of this one. The information must be in the book somewhere -- how could it be missing from a book that includes abortion, cancer, and geriatrics? -- but I could not diagnose the problem until I put this book down and sought information elsewhere.

(By human first aid standards, the authors of this book have bungled a well-understood task, but by dog first aid standards, they might be pretty good, for all I know. All the other books I found with dog first aid information suffered from similar problems, and none were half as useful as a typical human guide. Dozens of excellent first aid guides are available for humans, ranging from useful twenty-page pamphlets produced with line drawings and basic vocabulary to professional manuals larger than this book. Why can't I find a single well done, up-to-date first aid guide for dogs? If I recall correctly, _The Home Pet Vet Guide: Dogs_ was well illustrated and well organized, but it hasn't been updated in twenty years. Another book that I haven't been able to examine, but which sounds promising, is _Dog First Aid Emergency Care for the Hunting, Working, and Outdoor Dog_.)

Despite my disappointment with the first aid aspect of the book, I considered buying it anyway for the other veterinary information. I decided against it, since I already have a guide to basic care. I just couldn't imagine myself using it. It may be interesting to read about whelping, but if your dog were about to have puppies, would you really rely on this book, or would you buy a more specialized one? If your dog develops cancer, will you rely on the copy of _Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook_ that's been on your bookshelf for three years, or will you seek a newer, more focused source of information? Or will you trust your vet?

The truth is that while there's lots of information in this book, it mostly provides interesting but ultimately insufficient chunks of information. A whole page devoted to a rare disorder might seem like an impressive amount of detail, but it's pointless until your dog develops that disorder. Then that page becomes useful, but it also becomes absurdly inadequate. And it hardly needs to be said that a six hundred page book won't enable you to accurately diagnose your dog or second-guess your vet. A textbook for an undergraduate physiology course -- which most vets take before they enter veterinary school -- contains as much information as this guide (and much more lavish illustrations to boot).

If you don't want to take your dog to the vet and are too lazy to study real vet school texts and veterinary reference books, or if you enjoy trivia, or if you want to annoy your vet with half-informed theories about your dog's maladies, then this is the book for you. If you have already have plenty on your reading list and just want a guide for basic care and emergencies, I'm sorry to say I haven't yet found the right book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Reference Book

There are lots of pictures and illustrations in addition to simple, down-to-earth descriptions that give you more information about diagnoses your vet has made, common ailments your pet may have, and treatment options.

There's also a handy First Aid Section, useful index, and glossary to help you better understand your dog's health.

I refer to this book OFTEN. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative and well-illustrated.
This book offers great insights into the structure, function and proper care of the equine foot. I am very glad that I purchased and read it, and I highly recommend it for anyone who needs to know this type of information: veterinarians and veterinary students, farriers, and horse owners should especially find this a valuable resource.

4-0 out of 5 stars WEAK IN NUTRITIONAL INFO - BUT AN IMPORTANT BOOK TO OWN
I read this little book the first night I got it, and learned a great deal. I only wish I had this info before I lost my beautiful cat friend Taura to cancer almost 5 yrs ago. Even though I thought I was well informed at the time Taura was sick, I've since learned that I really was not, and a book like this could have made a real difference. Veternarians do not always have the skills or knowledge to give thorough information and this book has an abundance of real life info and leaves one with a great deal to think about.

HOWEVER, I was very disappointed in the section on nutrition, which seemed to lack a full view of nutritional options. Even though there was info given on the importance of protein, carbohydrates, etc. the main recommendation for a cancer fighting food was Hills Diet, which felt bias. Some info was given on supplements, but none on other options for foods, such as the possiblity of homemade diets, either cooked or raw, which under the guidance of a good vet could be the answer to good health, depending on the individual needs of each animal. Also, no other quality foods were listed, of which there are many, which with proper guidance may also be appropriate. BE SURE TO CHECK OUT OTHER NUTRITIONAL OPTIONS WITH A VET WHO KNOWS NUTRITION, AS MANY DO NOT.

THIS IS A REALLY GOOD BOOK TO HAVE - I will keep it near and hope I will not need it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispendable Resource
A brilliantly written book which offers hope, comfort and compassionate advice for all pet owners whose animal companions face this horrible disease. Covers all aspects of cancer care from diagnosis to end stages of the disease. A must for the pet owner whose beloved animal companion has been stricken with cancer. Thank you, Dr. Downing for this gem of a book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Pet Owners Who Need Information
After my dog was diagnosed with cancer, I searched the internet for answers, and found this book on Amazon. It is a little book, worth it's weight in gold. It is written by a knowledgeable vet who translates clinical information into a factual, yet compassionate conversation with the reader. By using the website links in the back of the book, I was able to find a world class animal hospital in my area that correctly diagnosed the rare form of cancer my dog has. Seven months later, we are on the road to remission. I still refer to Dr. Downing's book, and am more than thanful to have found it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cancer is NOT a killer....
This book was given to me by my vet after my dog (Nikki) was diagnosed with lymphoma. I read this book in one sitting!! This book was a great resource for me in a time of great sadness. I was able to take the many questions that didn't come to me at the vet's office and get them answered. I highly recommend this book to others who may be going through this experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for all parents of pets with cancer
As an owner of the most loveable, teddy-bear Rottweiler in the world, I have found "Pets Living With Cancer" to be the ultimate resource for information and inspiration. Hampton was diagnosed with Osteo-Sarcoma (bone cancer) and I was at a loss and feeling very hopeless. Not only did this book give me renewed hope, but it described, in layman's terms, the myriad of options that are available to treat this disease. I also learned that cancer does NOT have to be a death sentance. The author, Robin Downing, has lived through this experience with her Great Dane Murphy, and is extremely compassionate and understanding while communicating the fact that we, as pet owners, do have options and can fight. This book is a definite, must-read for any pet owner, considering that cancer is the number one killer of dogs-- especially if it is left untreated. Hampton is doing great now, and I have an extremely positive attitude, thanks to Robin Downing. ... Read more

non-health problems are looked upon as a situation requiring the vets help...and I am talking the every-dog-on-the-planet-does-this kind of things such as coughs up a bit of phlegm ( or whatever it ate too fast) and the occasional sneezes, as well as dry skin.Never is a simple, try the logical, home remedy suggested. Essential preventative supplements and care are not addressed nor much of any of the truly important aspects of the average dog.Being in a business where we have hundreds of customers as well as having been a breeder, I was totally disappointed. I can not even HONESTLY sell this book in our shop. We'll use it as a give away...maybe.My heart says "NO"
it is just too "the vet is god" so go see him/her.
I suppose it can come in handy if someone just happens to have a life threatening emergency come up and they are instructed to go to the vet when they might not have. But there are so many better books out there. The one by Giffin and the UC Davis one
are excellent and for the more medical person, the Merck.

5-0 out of 5 stars DOG BOOK SAVE MY DOG'S LIFE!
Before diagnosing my eleven year old chihuahua with a fatal illness I used this book to troubleshoot the possible problems my dog was having. I also used this book as guide to articulate the different "signs" and "symptoms" of my dogs behavior so that my vet could help her. I recommend this book for every dog owner- treat it as a reference guide & always keep it handy for reference...who knows when you'll need to perform mouth-to mouth (YES) to your dog, or treat your dog for shock. My dog-wouldn't be here with me right now if I hadn't read this book. Sincerest thanks to the authors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dog Symptoms
This is a book every dog owner should have. It begins with a discussion of the healthy dog, including healthy behavior. Next normal "preventative maintenance" is discussed followed by chapters on injuries then diseases. The heart of the book identifies 180 typical symptoms and the significance of each. Recommendations for "what to do" accompany the symptoms, but, more often than not, the recommendation is to take the dog to a veterinarian.

The importance of this book is that reference to it should enable the dog owner to provide more complete descriptions of what symptoms exist. Simply put, the more one is aware of the various symptoms and how they interrelate the more one will be able to describe them to a veterinarian. Or, another way, if you don't know what to look for you won't see anything. UNLESS YOUR DOG CAN TALK YOU WILL HAVE TO DESCRIBE THE PROBLEM(S) FOR HIM/HER. It is axiomatic that the more relevant information you can provide a veterinarian, the better will be the diagnosis. Also included is a large section that discusses congenital problems one might expect in specific breeds. Forewarned is forearmed. The book is well written and easy to use. Charts make locating specific symptoms very easy. Veterinary/medical terminology is kept to a bare minimum. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good news for all serious fanciers
The authors of Robinsons' Genetics for Cat Breeders and veterinarains are two breeders who have written on breeding and showing (Vella and McGonagle), a geneticist (Shelton) and a practicing veterinarian (Stanglein). This book simply and directly covers the subject of genetics, incorporating the lastest scientific advances, while at the same time reflecting the practical knowledge of experienced breeders.

The whole subject of genetics is covered: principles of heredity; breeding systems and inbreeding; coat and color inheritance; color variations; breeds; and genetic anomolies. The heart of this book is the material on breeding systems and practices, and selective breeding and inbreeding. The evaluation of cats for breeding purposes and comparisons between possible mates are explored in considerable depth. The chapter on genetic anomolies is up-to-date and quite comprehensive.

The new Fourth Edition is good news for all serious fanciers. Not only does it continue Robinson's work, it actually makes the best guide to feline genetics better!

5-0 out of 5 stars Robinson's Genetics for Cat Breeders and Vererinarians
This is a very straightforward book which details every aspect of feline genetics. It is very readable and informative on the facts and also on breeding theories. The writers coming from four different disciplines is helpful, along with a glossary which explains the terminology. It would be a very good investment for an experienced person or novice breeder (me). ... Read more

Book Description

Abdominal Radiology for the Small Animal Practitioner - an addition to the Made Easy Series.

From the preface of the book - "It is the hope of this book to help the reader learn to transform a radiograph from a flat black and white picture to a 3 dimensional image with multiple shades of grey to visualization of the abdomen which it represents. This text will describe the normal appearance of the abdomen, ways in which the radiographic appearance changes to reflect disease, basic radiographic techniques, and common abdominal disorders. The text is meant to be a handy cookbook which can be quickly grabbed from the shelf rather than a comprehensive volume which would require intensive study."

This is a practical presentation of the uses and interpretations of abdominal plain film for the small animal practitioner. Among the 172 pages there are 250 radiographs, 6 black & white photos and 2 tables. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from my mistake!
Trust me -- DO NOT attempt to dissect a dog without this book! When you're up to your elbows in half-digested Snausages and Milk Bones, you'll wish you had spent just a few minutes with this medical masterpiece. Woof! Good boy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice companion for Miller's Anatomy of the Dog
Overall, I found this to be an excellent book for small animal (technically dog only) gross anatomy. I say small animal, but I find myself referring to this text even when studying large animal anatomy. Reason--I like how the text very clearly indicates proximal and distal muscle attachments for all major muscles and specific nervous and arterial supply to all major muscles.

The pictures and diagrams are decent, but all in black and white. I found it helpful to color in structures in the book as I dissected that specific part of the animal.

I didn't find the text as boring as other reviewers have. True, the subject matter is tedious, but this book gets right to the point. Paradoxally, that is also while I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5. A lot of the detail is missing. I suggest having a copy of Miller's Anatomy of the Dog to go with this dissection guide.

Highly recommended!

2-0 out of 5 stars First Year Vet Student
This book has excellent pictures, but the text could cure insomnia. While its useful to have some guidelines as to where to cut when if this is your first time in anatomy lab, you might be better off letting your lab partners buy this one and getting a bigger and better reference book instead. I highly recommend the entertaining anatomy books from Sudz publishing by Chris Pasquini.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's okay
This book has good information, however the diagrams get confusing, and I found myself flipping through numerous pages to find references to diagrams in the text.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy layout
This book is really helpful in low to medium level of veterinary anatomy. It is easy for begniners to look and find, but professionals might want something else...
I still think it is a great book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A text found lacking
This text was purchased after seeing a colleague's earlier edition. I liked the thoroughness with which each subject was handled plus I found the illustrations and variety of techniques described invaluable. Hence I bought the book for my own library. Imagine my surprise when I used my new book for the FIRST time and found that there was NO section on eyes or eyelid surgery. There was a large chapter on this in the previous edition. How could any text on surgery leave out such an important subject? The editorial decision to drop this chapter was a serious mistake. Dogs and cats DO still have eyes and eyelids that require surgical attention! Thank goodness I had other texts to refer to. Now I have lost faith in this book. What will it be lacking the next time I go looking for information?

5-0 out of 5 stars It's the best choice for small animal surgery beginners!
Everybody knows that Slater'sTextbook of Small Animal Surgery is the best small animal surgery book of the market, but for students and veterinary surgery beginners it may be complicated to read or too expensive to buy. Thus, Current Techniques in Small Animal Surgery may be the best choice as a first surgery book. ... Read more

This fascinating book is a valuable guide for farmers and the general public concerned about the overuse of nonnatural medicine, herbicides, and insecticides in farm management and animal husbandry. The author, Juliette de Baïracli Levy, offers detailed directions for treating all farm animals with natural methods, while stating her evidence that "mechanized" farming methods have led to the demise of domesticated animals' overall health. She asserts that poor and inadequate natural habitat, unnatural feeding practices, and a reliance on medicine to fight individual symptoms of disease without addressing the whole animal have weakened farm animals' innate disease-fighting ability. Her argument for a return to reliance on the natural and away from the synthetic and artificial rearing and feeding methods of farm animals becomes more urgent and relevant given the outbreaks of "mad cow disease" and other ailments caused by these practices. This book, used in conjunction with proper consultation with a veterinarian, can help animal owners and farmers move back to natural and healthy farming practices. --Julia King ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If you own goats, own this book
I am a goat farmer for many years now. I have bought many books on goats, veterinary manuals, and so on, but this book is the first one I turn to for animal ailments. Natural rearing methods produce better and healthier kids than any other method. I bought one doe kid who was so ill with a disease that affected her brain that I was going to put her out of her misery--- it was too late for a vet to do any good. With the herbal treatments in this book, the goat recovered and lived over a year in good health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbs are the best!
I have used this book for years and it has done wonders for my animals. It difinitely saved lives of animals the vet had given up on.The information is specific, with easy to understand instructions for preparation of herbs and what/when/why of their use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much ranting
There may be some useful knowledge in here, but I was completely turned off by the author's...theories (she doesn't believe germs can cause disease, for example) and ranting against modern veterinary medicine and farming practices.

5-0 out of 5 stars Time-tested Approaches to Natural Healing for Animals.
Juliette Levy is a legend in the world of natural healing. Her courage in speaking out against the unnatural methods of raising dogs, cats and farm animals often brought her much criticism, but the practices set forth in her book have stood the tests of time and have saved many an animal that might otherwise have been lost. She offers not only an extensive list of plants and their uses, but also speific protocols for a variety of illnesses, all very clearly explained and laid out. She outlines specific dietary regimines as well, for the purpose of maintaining maximum health and supporting an ill animal through the healing process. I have personally used her methods with my own animals with great success. No serious herbalist or student of natural healing should be without it. ... Read more

This book is a must for any horse owner. It is full of information written in laymans terms. Whether you are a veterinary student or just a new horse owner, you can literally see why your horse moves the way he does, why his body works the way that it does, and why he even behaves the way that he does. There is so much information about other farm animals also...dogs, goats, cows, deer, etc. A great guide to understanding what your vet is talking about also. This book will never be out dated! ...
