5-0 out of 5 stars Systemic Approach
This book has been very helpful as I begin my hobby in aquarium science. Fish will get sick and I like the systemic approach that this book takes. Many books on fish disease barely cover the surface and don't discuss anything but the most common ailments. Well done, well referenced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done....the best book I've ever seen on fish health!
This is an excellent book for fish health professionals and students alike. It contains methods for diagnosing fish diseases as well as detailed biology, life history, and the current most effective treatment regimen for each organism. The book covers environmental problems, as well as bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and nutritional deficiencies. It is well written and organized making it a good resource book for the laboratory. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
Anyone who owns, breeds or cares for horses, this is a must have book. Dr. Lose V.M.D. is a very caring veterinarian who has helped me out tremendously!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book with it's own opinions
This book focuses almost exclusively on the foal. Dr. Lose has written another book, Blessed are the Brood mares, to cover the mare half of foaling. I enjoyed this book, but found it a bit spare on the actually foaling procedure. It extensively covers diseases and illnesses ... something that occurs, but not to all of us. I would have preferred more time spent on how to keep the foal healthy and happy. I'll call the vets over if my foal gets sick and I'll trust their opinion the best. Dr. Lose covers a long length of time in the foal's life, examining vaccinations during the first year, handling the foal (limited), turning the mare and foal out (some good tips there), and feeds. She is an advocate of early weaning of the foal at 3 months of age. This is a debatable practice, but if you are interested in it, she seems to have her reasoning explained.

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed Are The Foals
Please check used book stores for this book..would appreciate any info as to its availibility

Book Description

If you breed dogs for any reason, you must own this book. Genetic diseases are among the most serious hazards on the landscape of modern dog breeding and one of the most vexing challenges facing today's dog breeders. Is it appropriate to open the gene pool to unwanted conditions in the pursuit of physical perfection, or must breeding to the Standard take a back seat to producing healthy animals?

In Control of Canine Genetic Diseases, renowned authority George A. Padgett, DVM, provides an expert road map to help dog breeders everywhere avoid the pitfalls they are almost destined to encounter. For anyone whose goal is to produce healthy, functional and beautiful dogs, this is the book they need. Dr. Padgett provides clear explanations of modes of inheritance, how to conduct and analyze test matings and how to lower the chances of producing affected animals. Numerous tables, diagrams and graphs further enhance the text to facilitate the breeder's understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
This book is well-written, practical and easy to read from cover to cover. Genetic diseases is potentially a very dry subject yet Padgett's discussion of canine genetic diseases is even humorous at times.

Do not be put off by a book that looks as if it will be difficult to understand. Only a *very basic* knowledge of genetics is needed to get through this book as it is not packed with terminology, and what it does use it explains simply and quickly.

I believe this book is a must-read for all dog breeders and those clubs associated with dog breeders - whether you are a serious registered breeder, breeding two or three litters a year, or believe you are breeding "just one litter" from your favourite pet dog. Canine genetic diseases are a potentially heartbreaking issue you should be aware of whether you are breeding just one litter or several!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mandatory Reading For Every Reputable Breeder
I have read books on genetics before, but this is the first that I was able to read through without a problem. Balances technical concepts with practicality. Also, indicates how it will take more than just OFA/CERF testing and points to the need for Breeders and National Breed Clubs to join in an open/honest atmosphere in order to more efficiently determine and solve genetic problems. This is a must read for every reputable breeder !

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any dog breeder
Without burying the reader in genetics, the author provides an outline for an effective system to control genetic diseases. If every breeder followed the recommendations set forth in this book, the quality of purebreed dogs would improve. Dr.Padgett is a proponent of open registries as a means to increase our knowledge of the genetic traits, both good and bad. In summary, a brilliant book for bring genetic diseases out of the closet.

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential book for anyone who breeds dogs.
Dr. Padgett's book is unique in the field of canine genetics. Rather than delving into Mendelian theory, he dispenses with a formal discusion and gets right to the heart of the problem. A strong proponent of Open Registries he explains the difference between closed registries such as OFA and CERF and why use of closed registries will never allow breeders to eliminate genetic disease from their lines. Dr. Padgett provides tools, techniques and tables to allow breeders to analyze their pedigrees and make informed decisions regarding prospective matings in an effort to control disease occurrence. He also outlines steps breed clubs and breeders can take towards using Open Registries as a means of gathering data needed to determine the mode of inheritance for genetic diseases affecting their breed. Finally, a text on canine genetic disease that tells the whole story. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The quintessential resource for veterinary ophthalmology
A worthy successor to the previous edition with contributions from many leaders in their respective fields and several new sections. Should be on the bookshelf of anyone serious about veterinary ophthalmology.

5-0 out of 5 stars the definitive text but long (1500p) and heavy (4.5kg)!
Gelatt has produced the definitive text which is without doubt a magnum opus. It is, however, very long and somewhat repetitive since the same topic is covered in several chapters rather than having one place to which all other chapters refer. This is good if you are revising from it, since it forces you to read slightly different accounts of the same material but not good if you want a quick reference which tells you all you need to know. Different chapters don't always agree and the index doesn't always lead you to each entry for a subject (take ligneous conjunctivitis for example which isn't in the index at all). There are some outright mistakes (keratin where it really means keratan in the cornea chapter for instance) which is a shame in a text that will be the definitive text for years to come. Neverthless every veterinary ophthalmologist will need to buy it - but veterinary surgeons in practice might find it a bit to much to be really useful unless they wanted to really research a topic in great detail. Having said all that this is the place to go if you want to know what's right up to date in veterinary ophthalmology, for basic science, canine ophthalmology in depth, feline, equine, exotic and lab animal, even poultry ophthalmology. If it is known at present it's in there! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A favorite
Incredible book - it is so complete and really requires re-reading numerous times. For those who have difficulties with technical terms I advise buying the Saunders Comprehensive Veterinary dictionary - probably the best of its kind and truly a good companion when reading such advanced books.

5-0 out of 5 stars well worth the time and money!
This book along with volume one are the most in depth and useful books on dogs, their behavior and training. A 'must read' for those who work with dogs and very useful for the owner who wants to know dogs better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding
For a dog behaviour professional, this book and its companion volume have to be the most useful and important resource around. Not for the casual dog owner, but then that's not the target market. A wealth of material, well presented and organised, and without bias. Now when's the one on behaviour modification coming out??!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Aye Yie Yie!
I would give this book five stars if it weren't for the level of difficulty in reading it...just had to take off a star for that reason alone. This isn't the book for the first time dog owner or casual trainer. It's a serious book for the well-versed student of dog behavior and training. Mr. Lindsay definitely knows what he's talking about but the reader must already have a fairly good grasp of the "concepts" behind his explanations in order to fully understand the material. It was a good read that I had trouble putting down, though! If you're serious about learning the more advanced concepts and principles in dog behavior and training, the book is well laid out and informative to the max! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for the new horse owner!
This is a great book for the new owner who hasn't been brought up aroung horses. It has great pictures and goes into a lot of detail about nutrition, vaccinations, illness/injury, age characteristics ect.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Guide
This is truly for a first-horse owner or someone who is leasing a horse and who wants to learn the basics of horse health care. I found several of the chapters useful for treatments that I needed to give for the first time, but there are other sections that aren't as practical and there is a lot of space devoted to black and white photographs, which are not too useful either as it's difficult to look for differences in texture or coloration that the text elaborates on. Having said this, for a true beginner it is an adequate foundation and would be appropriate for a younger rider/reader as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read and Learn
This book is full of those 'little things' that are very important - that nobody ever tells you exactly about. Another super Cherry Hill book, this is the fourth I have bought and they are all very good.

2-0 out of 5 stars Only For Beginers
In my opinion, this book is not worth buying, unless you are truly a beginner. And even then, you will quickly outgrow this book. It contains practices that you can quickly pick up at the stable where your lessons are. To learn them from others at your stable will more likely help you, because it will be in more detail and you will watch someone do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book made owning a horse a lot easier
Without Cherry Hill and her books with all the pictures I am sure I would have been panicking at every little scratch on my horses. She explains things so a non-horse person can understand without having to run to dictionaries or other horse reference books to look up her explaination. I buy all her books as I find them and enjoy her friendly way of writing. Thank you Cherry Hill for taking the time to make the explaination interesting and informative. ... Read more

The Illustrated Veterinary Guide is a brilliantly conceived and expertly rendered reference. In one succinct volume, Chris C. Pinney, D.V.M., covers just about everything you might need to know about owning and caring for dogs, cats, and countless other animals. He covers birds, rabbits, and guinea pigs; hamsters, rats, and chinchillas; prairie dogs, hedgehogs, ferrets, and miniature potbellied pigs--plus reptiles, amphibians, tropical fish, and invertebrates. Whether your menagerie is restricted to Fluffy and Fido, or extends to tarantulas, hermit crabs, newts, and snakes, Pinney provides chapters on restraint, housing, nutrition, reproduction, preventive health care, and the diseases and disorders relevant to each species.

The dog and cat sections are naturally the most thorough, forming more than half the book. Pinney discusses how to choose the right dog and how to housebreak, socialize, and train him, then delves into preventive health care (nail trimming, weight control, and staving off parasites), elective surgeries (tail docking and ear trimming), and breeding your dog (from puberty and birthing to the care of neonatal puppies). Next come the infectious diseases (such as distemper, paravirus, kennel cough, and ringworm) and the parasitic diseases (such as scabies, tapeworm, and demodectic mange). Pinney's veterinary guide launches into all the internal systems (cardiovascular and respiratory, immune and digestive, urinary and reproductive, musculoskeletal, nervous, and endocrine) plus the doggy anatomy of skin and coat (integumentary system), eyes, and ears. Pinney explains the workings of each system, and the diseases that afflict them. There are few symptom charts, so you can't look up "vomiting" and see the associated diseases, though you can check the chapter on first aid for a quick guide to possible causes and seriousness. You can also identify the digestive system as the likely location, read about all the conditions and symptoms, and decide if tonsillitis, intestinal obstruction, or intussusception seems most likely.

The information provided by Pinney is all sound veterinary data, and the appendix on first aid for dogs and cats is excellent. But don't underestimate the value of the illustrations. An illustration of ringworm on a cat face is worth a thousand words when it comes to assessing if that's what your cat has, and mimicking the drawing of how to hold a pet snake is worlds easier than trying to apply written instructions to a restive boa. Some illustrations, such as the one of a cat in a thicket to illustrate feline nocturnal predatory habits, provide more eye candy than useful data. But there's no replacement for a picture of where to cut a bird's talon, how to restrain a lizard, or what a dog with impacted anal sacs looks like when it's scooting. If you like animals and want all your veterinary info in one place, Pinney's guide is a great one-volume resource.--Stephanie Gold ... Read more

This book is great for veterinary students as well as anyone with animals. Very informative and easy to understand. First Aid section in back! I loved this book, it even told me the right way to hold my parakeet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable aid for caretakers and owners of small animals
This indispensable aid for caretakers and owners of small animals is a miniature encyclopedia chock full of facts, advice, and instruction on the care and feeding of dogs, cats, birds, and other pets. With chapters on everything from proper housing and daily nurturing of your pets, to emergency medicine and disease symptoms, this book has a section for just about everything you may encounter in pet ownership and animal care. The book even covers pets that many folks won't take to a vet -- rats, mice, hamsters, gerbils, and reptiles. If you learn even one thing from the book that avoids a costly veterinary visit, the book has already paid for itself. This guide is especially helpful for people with more than one type of animal -- for instance, I have cats, dogs, birds, rabbits, and rats.Instead of shelling out mega-bucks for 5 separate books, I was able to locate all the information I need in a single book. While most pet owners won't read the entire book at the time of purchase, that's one way to approach the wealth of information it offers. On the other hand, it's a terrific manual to have on hand, just in case, for the times when you'll need it.Much like a home first aid kit, this is a tool all pet owners should have in their homes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I would give all of his books more than 5 stars if I could!
If you want a book that will take you back to the country life and its people with all their foibles and admirable qualities and love animals then his books will be pure enjoyment! I love the way he tells his stories. In his stories, he doesn't ever claim to be the best veterinarian around (I think he underrated himself), but you know he is a wonderful, kind, animal and people loving person. The way he speaks about the people and animals he comes in contact with, come to life and you feel you are right there with him. You will laugh, maybe cry, and cheer him on as you read. If you have animals, or raise them, you will love his books, although you don't have to own any to appreciate them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gem!
My first experience with the late James Herriot's inspirational books took place in a bookstore in Singapore, in the 80's. I was barely 14 & had not heard of this writer/vet. But as soon as I started reading All Things Wise and Wonderful - my very first JH book, I knew I had to get the rest of the series.
Through his poignant, funny, sensitive and Yorkshire-accented writing, I relived his world as a practising vet. His was a world where decent, civic minded people lived with much love & respect for their pets and farm animals. A world where I wanted/want to be in.
It is true how one book reviewer put it: every chapter will have you either laughing out loud or shedding a quiet tear. To this day, I still remember some of his stories that touched my heart. The courtship years when a young JH was trying to impress Helen (who eventually became his very supportive wife); the timid little black stray cat, who with her last breath, would placed her one surviving kitten into the hands of a caring family; the endearing 'beggar' dog; the bored, pampered & misunderstood pet dog of a wealthy spinster...I could almost touch and see JH's characters through his vivid writing. I even felt his pride when his daughter also became a vet, & his son a doctor.
I am sorry that there were not more of his wonderful tales.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Unabridged Audio Set Is Wonderful!
The reading on the audio cassettes is done by Christopher Timothy, the actor who plays James Herriot on the BBC series "All Creatures Great And Small". He does a magnificent job of Sigfried, Tristan and all the dales farmers. It is truly a delight to listen to this series of tapes - it takes you into another world.

(Note: there appears to be an error above, listing Edmund Stoiber as the reader.)

In this set, James has joined the RAF to support the war effort, though fate has other plans for him. We follow his attempts to get in shape and become a pilot, as events and people remind him of his many experiences back in his vet practice.

Perhaps because of the War Years, some of these stories are slightly more edgy, such as a rash of dog-poisonings and an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease that is uncomfortably reminiscent of recent events. But overall there is that sweetness of tone that pervades all of Herriot's work.

I think my favorite story was the old farmer fetching two gallons of the local pub's best beer in a milk bucket in order to warm a mother pig to her new family. Of course he saved a "drop" for himself and his mates. The amazing thing about these books is that there is never a repeated story throughout the whole series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another favorite
James Harriot has that amazing ability to transport you into his world, take you into his confidence, and offer you his friendship.....all through a series of heartwarming stories taken from his life as a Yorkshire vet. It's so refreshing to read books that are not strewn with violence and sex...yet which captivate your attention. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants some good wholesome entertainment and an occasional chuckle.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful end to a fabulous series of books!
I have read each of James Herriot's books many times (including this one) and still enjoy them every time I read them! This book is one of my favorite books of the series, and is highly recommended by me. If you have read the other books you will love this one just as much if not more! If you have not read any of the other books, this book would also be a good one to start off with. After reading it I can assure you that you will want to read all the others. NOTE: I also have all five of these books on audio tape (by Christopher Timothy) and would recommend these as well! It is great to listen to them while you do hobbies since you can actually do two things at the same time, and Christopher Timothy (who played James Herriot in the BBC series) really brings the characters to life, using different voices and accents. ... Book Description

Birds are ideal subjects for holistic care. They are especially sensitive to emotional and physical stresses. Based on what we have learned from wild birds and studies completed in the last 10-20 years, this book will help you provide your bird with a longer, healthier life. Each beautifully illustrated chapter is written from two viewpoints, one from the leading holistic avian veterinarian and the other from a bird owner's viewpoint. Holistic care is defined and the value of this type of care in relation to conventional western medicine is discussed. Other interesting topics include the physical bird, the emotional bird, nutrition and special holistic therapies. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and helpful.....
In HOLISTIC CARE FOR BIRDS, authors McCluggage and Higdon address preventative care as well as spiritual and emotional healing. They begin with a brief overview of 'bird keeping' - Different birds have different needs..Not all birds like to be petted while others may become miserable without constant affection. Sometimes the difference is species specific, other times it is related to the bird's treatment by previous owners.

Obvious physical problems may send you scrambling to the vet, but there are remedies you can keep on hand to deal with life's stresses and less serious physical injuries. For example, according to the authors, mild camomile tea in the bird's water bowl offers a soothing aperitif following a bad "out-of-cage" experience with the family dog or as a palliative for feather picking. Aloe juice used to treat human skin problems as well as Vitamin E and C can also be used to address bird wounds inflicted by cage mates.

The authors address a range of treatments for ailments as diverse as sore feet and broken feathers to heart disease. They do not eschew veterinary care, indeed McCluggage is a DVM as well as a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. Higdon has written a number of books on happy, healthy pets (Lovebirds, Quaker Parrots, etc.). The book includes a section on nutrition, as the best health care involves diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great physiology reference
I would highly recommend this book. The next best thing to sitting in one of Dr. Cunningham's lectures. It is easy to understand, uses great examples and has good practice problems. I bought it for first year physiology and am constantly returning to it to brush up for other classes. Dr. C also designed the cool cover.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still an essential book for the practitioner
I was surprised at Dr.? Reith's review of this book. Contrary to what Reith affirms, the book IS divided into host sections, al least for the parasites diagnosed by fecal examination; actually, there are 28 pages and 55 photographs devoted to dogs and cats, 16 pages and 32 photographs devoted to ruminants, etc. Parasites of the urinary tract, genital tracts, or skin are in a separate chapter, as are blood parasites and arthropods. This does not bother me terribly. I wish Reith had mentioned the "very common parasites" that are not included; I have not missed any yet of the common ones in a veterinary practice. I have a fairly extensive collection of parasitology diagnosis books and, for the variety and/or quality of the photos, this is still the best. I only wish that some of the photos were in color but I am not sure I could afford it. I still recommend it very strongly to my students of Veterinary Parasitology and to veterinary practitioners.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as useful for reference as the previous edition.
The features that made the 5th edition so helpful as a reference, like separating the book into sections according to the type of host (ie: dog, sheep, horse, rodent), and showing photos of the parasites that commonly are found in or on that host, have been removed. Additionally, some very common parasites are not even included in this 6th edition! Rather than a good reference book, it has now been reduced to somewhat of a primer on parasitology, one that introduces you to 'types' of parasites, rather than one that actually enables you to recognize characteristics of one parasite that distinguish it from another, similar parasite so that you can specifically identify it. This book is no longer useful, as the previous edition was, for reference work. I do not recommend it. ... Read more
