5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers
In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars True Folk Magic - At Last!
Finally a book of spells that focuses on traditional and ethnic sources, rather than neo-wiccan candle magic.

If you are interested in learning about real folk magic and working with spells and recipes that have been tried and tested by generations of witches, voodoo practicioners, cunning folk, magus', shamans and witch doctors this is the book for you. Most of the spells in this book are traditional, some have never appeared in print before.

The theory section is not quite as impressive and far more neo-pagan in its outlook, that said I have seen far worse theory and the rest of the book certainly makes up for it. If you can ignore the authors frequent references to pop-fiction works you may enjoy her Spellcraft section thoroughly as well.

Be warned though, this book is very multi-cultural in its approach. There are spells that work with pagan, vodoun, christian and hermetic spirits. If you prefer to work with only one cultural strain of magic you may find only a few of these spells will agree with you. For the culturally eclectic - this book is a gold mine.

All in all I give it 4 1/2 stars. I would give the Spells section which is the majority of the book 5 but the introductiory theory failed to impress me. I am quite satisfied with Judika Illes collection and would recommend it heartily.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recomended Book of Spells. The Ultimate!!!
Destined to be a classic. The Only Book on Spells You Will Ever Need.

This Book is not a Book on "Wiccan Magick" , although Wiccans who are not fluff bunnies, and are more open mided to learning could use it, and benefit greatly from this Book. It is a book on Folk Magic, from Brujeria, Santeria, Espiritismo, From Latin America, To Egypt, and other ancient cultures, from around the world. Many of these Earth-Magico Cultures do not believe in the concept of "Karma" so many of these Spells would be shunned by Wiccans. With that said.. I Love this Book. I hope the Author does a similar book on Magical Ceremonies and Rites and Passages.

There are little books of spells, cheap book of spells, and so so book of spells, well this is the Ultimate Huge Tome of Spells. An Encyclopedia of Magical Spells from around the world, this book defiantly belongs in every Witches bookshelf. Over 1000 pages of spells, baths, infusions, the spells range from everything from Santeria, Strega, Vodou, Spiritism, Brujeria, Shamanism, and traditional Witchcraft. Unlike other spell books, this will defiantly be of great usage to its owner. One of the best Book of Shadows ever printed. The Tome, because it is Huge has everything from Banishing, Cleansings, Baths, Protection Spells. Everything from Seances, to calling on Spirits of Nature, from White Magic, to Black Magic, and everything in between. Here is a preview of the table of context.
Spell casting, - Ritual and Tools, - Animal Spells - Banishing Spells - Business Success Spells - Cleansing Spells, - Court case, Legal, Justice Spells - Death Spells (Yes there is much on Black Magic, for those weak of heart) Ghost, Necromancy, and Vampire Spells. - Divination Spells - Domination, Influence Spells - Dream, Astral, Nightmare Spells- The Evil Eye - Fertility Spells - Safety Spells - Gamblers Spells, and Charms - Happy Home Spells - Healing Spells - Hexes and Curses - Invisibility, and Transformation spells - Love and Seduction Spells - Luck Spells - Marriage and Divorcee Spells, - Money, Wealth, Prosperity and financial spells - Children Spells - Protection Spells - Psychic powers - Summoning Spirits - unblocking spells - weather spells, and trust me, so much more...
A person would have to spend allot of money, on many books and still would not get half of what this book has to offer.
I have to give much praise to Judika Illes; this book will defiantly be one I will use for many years. This is my first book by this author, and know I have to purchase her other works. But I can not recommend this TOME enough, it is defiantly a must have for all Witches, and brujos. For all that you get in this huge book, the price is excellent, and very affordable. The Spells are simple and traditional spells that were used by our ancestors and are still effective today. No where will you get a book like this. If I could give this book 10 stars, I would.

2-0 out of 5 stars Author Not Nice
This book is ok for information on past history, but many of the spells could never be used, let alone make sense. She has some mistakes in the book to. Like the word magic/magick, which she doesn't use correctly. Also I emailed her to ask why and tell her my opinion of this book, like/nolike, and she wrote back with a nasty comment. She says "I wrote a threatening letter, which is certainly not the Wiccan Way. That it breaks the Wiccan Rede, the Rule of Three. If you are not familiar with the Rule of Three, write me back and I will be happy to recommend some good easy basic Wiccan books to show you." Me threatening please, she wrote to me with a rude state of mind, doing the same thing she says I did, yet did not really do. I take that as being a not very nice, I love my fans not the money, person. The author should be proud of her work and stand by it no matter what. Taking the good and bad opinions without snaping back at someone for no reason. So I would have to say the book is really not worth the time and money. That is my opinion though. You have the freedom to make ur own. TU. BB.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and intelligent!
This encyclopedia has really impressed me! It's a far cry from lots of other spellbooks that come off as unreliable or just plain hokey. Ms. Illes has definitely done her research correctly, which shows especially in the introductory parts about the "science" of magic, ritual items, the history of magic, and so on. If you're looking for a good general spellbook with samplings of varied traditions and methods of magic, this is probably the one for you. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
The amount of work Ms Illes put into her encyclopedia is amazing and a wonderful addition to anyone's library! I am very impressed and inspired and I can easily reccomend this book! ... Read more

Book Description

This consumer-oriented textbook addresses the principles of risk management without skimping on the discussion of insurance. It summarizes the nature of pure risk on the individual and on society and illustrates how insurance can be used to deal with the problems posed by such risk. Mirroring the diverse experience of its authors, the text is equally effective in presenting the principles of insurance theory and offering how-to advice to students. Throughout, the main emphasis is on the insurance product and the use of insurance within the risk management framework. The traditional fields of life insurance, health insurance, property and liability insurance, and social insurance are treated in terms of their relationship to the wide range of insurable risks to which the individual and the business firm are exposed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Risk and Insurance
Updated to reflect changes in the field since 1999, this volume provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of insurance, with a consumer emphasis on the insurance product.

4-0 out of 5 stars How Do I Write a Review about an Insurance Book?
Well, I guess I can try to review this book from the only perspective I read it from: that of a student. I had to read it for my CFP class on Insurance, and, as an introduction to most forms of insurance, it explains the forms in a very methodical and systematic way; it was very easy to follow and tough to get completely lost.

Honestly, I was never really fascinated with insurance. My life-licensing class was 24 hours of classroom time spread out over one weekend, so maybe that has created some insurance-related intellectual scars. The sections on Life Insurance and the basic components of any insurance contract and the whole insurance process were already familiar to me, so I found those sections incredibly uninteresting. The other forms of insurance were much more interesting and gave me a great foundation for other insurance studies I've done since.

The prose of the book, too, flows extremely well. In fact, I usually just lightly read passages explaining computations and formulas because I come back later to review them in-depth; however, while reading this book, I actually felt I fully understood most of the computations even while I read (which almost never happens because most formula-explaining reads much like Kant's "Metaphysics of Morals").

Just one closing point... I guess you'd have to be either Insurance Commissioner or a professor of insurance to be really interested in this material, but the authors write in a way that allows even the average CFP or insurance student to come away from the book with a good sense of how insurance works and where it fits into an individual's financial plan. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Light and introductory with the scent of apple pie
I wasn't impressed with this book for two separate reasons. Firstly, the production standard struck me as almost 1960s' in style - black and white photos (nice 'grainy' look), big bulky monitors and a general aged format. It is peculiar I agree, but the book looks like it was written at least 30 if not 40 years ago. The second set of quibbles I have with the text is that it presume the reader is almost completely ignorant of any kind of presentation technology. This assumption may have been acceptable several decades ago but the universality of TV seriously undermines its value. Television is constantly exposting the public to new technologies. For instance, in the text there is a piece with graphic devoted to how to load a slide projector. How relevant is that to today's classroom? Moreover, any decent bit of kit comes with instructions. I accept that the authors wish to do a thorough hand holding with the reader, but the book assume too little exposure to technology which renders it advice mediocre in places. Possibly it should be retitled Instructional Media Technology for Complete Dummies. The bits on the web are small (literally bits) which is not a good sign. Overall, the book was lightweight - possibly I am being unfair as I am not looking for the technology it covers, but for review of current and future developments. In any event I regret buying the book as it doesn't fit my needs and I didn't like its presentation style. It is a tired book, more like jaded, that does not mesh well with the style culture of modern multimedia technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice update of a classic textbook
As a co-author, I can report that Instructional Media upholds the tradition established by this textbook in 1982. It is aimed primarily at those who are at the entry level in terms of using media for education or training. It helps instructors decide what media to use for different teaching/learning situations, and gives practical tips on HOW to achieve the best effect when using technology. The book began with a focus on audiovisual media; the sixth edition retains the most relevant audiovisual content, but shifts focus toward computer-based delivery. What remains constant is the conviction that effectiveness of mediated instruction depends very much on what the instructor does...how the technology is integrated into the overall learning program. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars A book for graduates--Not undergrads
After the first week of our class falling behind, my professor mentioned to our class that this book was the wrong format for undergrads. So this book is only good as the teacher and the students. It's easy to read, but hard to understand. And, the CD-ROM was not user-friendly enough, but had an awesome integration into MS Excel. I aced all of my math classes in college (undergrad), but this class...I'm not gonna to ace. But if you aced all math classes and you're using this book for a grad class, then go for it. Otherwise, find another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best book for VR preparation
I run private tutoring courses for the MCAT, and I would say that this book is arguably the best source for MCAT Verbal Reasoning questions, aside from the real exams from AAMC. (Needless to say, I use this book in my course.) The writer accurately captures most aspects of the real exam, including passage length, question wording, distribution of question types, and ambiguity of the correct answers. The only major flaw that I find with this book is that some answer choices are not well supported (even taking into account the fact that the correct answers on the MCAT are supposed to be somewhat ambiguous). In some cases, there are blatant errors in the question stem or stated correct answers, or, more rarely, two equally correct answer choices. For this reason, I would rate this book 4.5 stars, but since Amazon doesn't let me do that, I will give it 5 stars. :) On the actual MCAT, the incorrect answer choices are usually a little more differentiated from the correct answer. These mistakes and imperfections are frequent enough to be a little annoying, but not abundant or major enough to topple this book of the pedestal of being the best VR preparation book out there. Kaplan's and Princeton Review's materials do not quite compare (especially Kaplan's, which contain too many explicit detail questions). Keep in mind that the questions in this book are probably going to be slightly more difficult than the real MCAT questions, which are not quite as tricky. Have fun and good luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide for Verbal
The verbal is by far one of the most difficult passages around for MCAT test takers, and I certainly fall into this category. If you want to do well on it, you must PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! The examkrackers verbal is an excellent tool that will give you the necesary practice. Try to get your hands on a lot of verbal passages (be careful, don't buy any of the teaching solutions MCAT products, this is one of those garbage prep materials the EK author was talking about) and work through the problems. Familiarize yourself with the common questions that frequently pop up on these verbal passages, and don't fill in the obvious answers. Practice and prepare, and you will do fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars RE: Better off with AAMC practice materials!, NOT!!!!!!!!!!
The AAMC practice materials are outdated compared to the real thing. They are too easy and you will be unpleasantly surprised on the real thing if your prep materials are from AAMC. Some times I think they want you to do badly, since it's their job to weed people out. For prep use the most difficult passages possible, then you will be fine. Let me leave you with one thought in mind: every next MCAT was always more difficult then the previous one.

Do not be scared, be prepared

GL

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Prep Verbal Book for the MCAT
I tought that EK Verbal 101 was the best prep book for the VR section of the MCAT. The passages were as long as the real exam, about the same level of difficulty and type of questions. I liked how the exams usually got harder half-way through, and each passages had more and more questions -- that's they way it's for me on the real MCAT. I mostly received 6's on my VR practice exams, and I ended up with a 8 on the real test -- not bad for someone who has only been using English as a formal language for 4 years, and is a Native Spanish-Speaker.
I am re-taking it, and I plan to buy the book again!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Here is the answer MCAT VR preparation.
This book has perhaps bridged the gap between me and medical school. In July I bought 101 Passages and diligently took a full length verbal section about once every three days as part of my preparation and it made the difference between medical school in the Carribean and becoming a viable candidate for some first tier U.S. medical schools. I also carefully studied Jon's advice in his Verbal Reasoning study guide and followed it religiously. It helped improve my score substantially. So why is this book so great? First, the text is identical in size and font to real thing, so you feel perfectly comfortable and familiar with the appearance of actual passages, question stems, and answers on test day. Second, the passage topics were right on the money -boring (cabinet making, charitable trust management, etc.), irrelevent to medicine, and challenging enough. Third, passage length was identical to that which you encounter on the real thing. Fourth, the answer choices are ambigious and you never really feel good about your answers -that is the essence of MCAT verbal. Dave perfectly captures that in 101 Passages. Fifth, there are 11 full length practice sections, which help you master your timing and slowly but surely improve you score. Sixth, Jon is pretty helpful on his website and will respond to most of your questions and give you that personal support that makes him kind of seem like a coach whose on your side. Lastly, there's nothing else out there that comes close to 101 Passages. Get this book to improve you verbal score. To really ace the verbal, carefully study the lectures in the thinner Examkracker's Verbal Reasoning study guide. Force yourself to adopt Jon's strategy. It will help you. If you do nothing else, remember these two points of advice: (1) finish the verbal sections no matter what you do, and (2) read for the main idea and be sure you have it in your head before you look at the questions. Jon covers that in depth in the thin Verbal Reasoning Study Guide in addition to about five or six other tips that really make the difference. Keep the faith premeds and believe in yourself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A College Need!!!!!
Since my classes require lots of in class papers I found this book to be quite helpful. It is not very large and heavy and also includes a thesaurus! I am very glade with my choice!

4-0 out of 5 stars NOT "5 CDs", but one Windows CD-ROM with limits
Was looking for a good unabridged dictionary in electronic format, but few have reviews/details. Am an old DOS dog who'd like to find a working copy of RHUD-DOS, so thought WNW Dict & Thesaurus might offer multiple formats in its "five CDs" ... not so. It is a standard Win 3.x/95/98 compatible reference with several limitations, such as not working well with WordPerfect or Word6. Full installation needs 100MB, and the short-cut does NOT automatically or optionally appear on desktop (either create one, or use Program subdirectory menu). Supplemental and instructional information is very sparse, and no print "manual" or "quick teach" is included ... further the Macmillan Digital website address on box/registration card is wrong (could change again, so will not cite; use browser search to find them). Thankfully, WNW does NOT have voice-over headword pronunciations, like newer dictionaries ... it assumes you can read! I have to use it in multitasking mode, which limits its versatility, but it is otherwise a good standard reference book at a reasonable price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for students and writers- very concise but thorough.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for primary teachers!
In this book, Debbie Miller takes you inside the walls of her first grade classroom, leading you through the course of the school year where her students become independent and motivated readers. You can hear the excited buzz of the students as they discover meaning in their reading and thoughtfully discuss their findings with their peers. Her students are intrinsically motivated to learn from their reading as they simultaneously decode the text.

I highly recommend this book to any primary teacher looking for new strategies and techniques for teaching and modeling comprehension in their classroom. Debbie Miller gives fun and practical ideas that can be applied in most any grade. She supplies the reader with endless strategies for creating a collaborative and safe learning environment. Every page is packed full of inspiring stories and examples that will transform your teaching and questioning strategies. Don't let this book pass you by!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teaching comprehension strategies!
Debbie Miller is a magical teacher whom I have had the pleasure of observing. She has captured the details of what makes her such a great teacher in her book Reading with Meaning. It is the first resource I have found that truly helps me to visualize how I can teach all of the reading comprehension strategies in my first grade classroom. It also backs many of my current beliefs with Debbie's resources and well thought out rationales. I would highly recommend this book for any teacher who is ready for their primary kiddos to start interacting with and understanding what they are reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Teachers - This is the book with the answers!!
I have been an elementary teacher for over 20 years and I've spent 17 of those years working with struggling readers.
I wish this book had been written and published 20+ years ago. Debbie has detailed in this book the best way to teach children how to understand what reading is all about whether it is fiction or non-fiction.
Strategies are explained thoroughly from the beginning of the year to the end.
They are easy to follow and simple to implement.
This book is worth its weight in gold!!
You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A "MUST HAVE" for teachers who teach reading!
I teach 2nd grade and this is a wonderful resource to help teach reading comprehension. My student's comprehension skills have greatly increased and I've been teaching for 10 years. Debbie provides tons of examples and it is written in an easy to understand way. I would recommend for veteran and new teachers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Any Primary Grade Teacher
There are certain "must have" books for teachers. This is one of them. Miller takes a decade of reading research (as synthesized by Pearson, et. al., 1992), and puts it into practice in her classroom. We move through the year with her, watching as she scaffolds for us and her students explicit reading instruction that truly works.

In Chapter 1, Miller goes straight to the crux of the matter: Gradually release responsibility to students; teach a few strategies of great consequence in depth over time; give students the gifts of time, choice, response, community, and structure.

Chapter 2 tells us how-and why-we should create a sense of community in the classroom. "Real classroom communities," writes Miller, "are more than just a look. Real communities flourish when we bring together the voices, hearts, and souls of the people who inhabit them." We must be "deliberate" in September if we are to create the type of environment in which growth and authentic learning will occur.

The Reader's Workshop is the topic of Chapter 3. Wait a minute, you may be saying, how does one have a "Reader's Workshop" when most of the students are not yet reading? "Readers' workshop in September," Miller writes, "is less about teaching children how to read and more about modeling and teaching children what it is that good readers do, setting the tone for the workshop and establishing its expectations and procedures, and engaging and motivating children to want to learn to read." And so Miller shows us, in detail, how we can go about this foundation-building. She begins with "Book Selection," then "Reading Aloud, Mini-Lessons, Reading and Conferring," and finally "Sharing."

With our solid underpinning in place we are now ready to settle in---the topic of Chapter 3. Here we learn how and why to give children choices when selecting books. Miller also discusses briefly phonics and word identification---two things that she believes should be taught side-by-side with comprehension strategies.

In the next two chapters Miller delves in depth into the comprehension strategies of schema and visualizing. She then devotes a chapter to "Digging Deeper." It is now January, she notes, and "[t]he time is right for increasing the sophistication of the read-alouds, showing them how to engage in more challenging dialogue and making connections from our past experiences to more in-depth learning." Timing, as they say, is everything. It is this type of knowledge and the ability to exploit the foundation that has been so carefully laid that makes Miller a teacher extraordinaire.

Chapter 8 through 10 are devoted to the remaining reading strategies of inferring, questioning, determining importance, and synthesizing. Miller includes numerous anecdotes, vignettes, lesson models, tips, techniques, and more. A list of references and a detailed index are included.

Practical and brilliant, this is one book that is definitely required reading for primary grade teachers.

``Don't judge a book by its cover.'' They could have at least gotten the Chinese characters the right way round -- the text on the cover is flipped left-to-right. I would not express surprise if this were representative of the contents (translation.)

This is a must read for any "girl" - teenager to senior citizen.Dr. Frankel offers straight forward strategies and advice on how to play the game of getting rich. The book is like a great buffet where you can pick and chose any chapter and feel well nourished. She gives you coaching tips that assure your financial and personal growth. The book is rich in priceless words of wisdom!

4-0 out of 5 stars Everyone can get richer!
The title really could be amended to, "Seventy-five mistakes that can benefit just about anyone."

Nearly everyone has made at least one of these mistakes (okay, maybe Donald Trump never did). But I think Frankel offers more than a collection of mistakes and "if onlys." She's got some good ideas you won't find everywhere.

My favorites:

Brainstorm with big picture thinkers -- and then get advice from the nitpickers.

Get out of your safety zone (no guts, no glory).

Listen to your intuition.

Just these three could save you the price of the book -- and there are many, many more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another winner!
Once again, Dr. Frankel points out the mistakes made by "too-nice" women that limits their wealth and self-esteem, and offers common-sense solutions to help them break out of the old routines and assert and protect themselves. The advice is specific, with examples, and addresses every case scenario. Good, solid advice your mother never told you (or even knew!). ... Read more

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to sit down with the Dalai Lama and really press him about life's persistent questions? Why are so many people unhappy? How can I abjure loneliness? How can we reduce conflict? Is romantic love true love? Why do we suffer? How should we deal with unfairness and anger? How do you handle the death of a loved one? These are the conundrums that psychiatrist Howard Cutler poses to the Dalai Lama during an extended period of interviews in The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living.

At first, the Dalai Lama's answers seem simplistic, like a surface reading ofRobert Fulghum: Ask yourself if you really need something; our enemies can be our teachers; compassion brings peace of mind.Cutler pushes: But some people do seem happy with lots of possessions; but "suffering is life" is so pessimistic; but going to extremes provides the zest in life; but what if I don't believe in karma? As the Dalai Lama's responses become more involved, a coherent philosophy takes shape. Cutler then develops the Dalai Lama's answers in the context of scientific studies and cases from his own practice, substantiating and elaborating on what he finds to be a revolutionary psychology. Like any art, the art of happiness requires study and practice--and the talent for it, the Dalai Lama assures us, is in our nature. --Brian Bruya ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Counter to the negative reviews
I have noticed several reviews that blast Howard C. Cutler for the way he wrote this book.

I would like to say that I think he did a good job.

As an enthusiast of Buddhism, I am inclined to agree that I would have liked to heard more from the Dalai Lama himself, but I understand that the intent of this book was to allow non-buddhists to learn to appreciate and to implement this marvelous system of Buddhist psychology in their lives.

In some senses, Buddhism is a science of understanding and mending the human psyche. For myself, I already understood a lot of the principles in the book, but it was very nice to hear a western psychologist's viewpoint. Sometimes I get lost in the volume of material there is to read about the practice of Buddhism. There are many different approaches to Buddhist thought.

This book is perfect for any non-Buddhist who would like to get a taste of the basic psychology derived from the teacings of one of the most brilliant men in history, The Buddha. The Dalai Lama is a wonderful man in his own right, and is a very wise and worldly translator of this complex system of thought. His profound and well thought out answers to the questions posed by Cutler reflect the depth of his understanding of the human condition and the remedies prescribed by the Buddha to end the suffering that we all must endure.

The Dalai Lama does not give a full exposition of the Buddhist teachings on any of the subjects presented in the book, but his answers are profound and can be put to use in the daily life of any westerner who desires to be happy. Cutler is a reassuring figure in the book who is there to raise the questions that any westerner might raise. More importantly, he is there to compare and contrast the words of the Dalai Lama to the work of western psychologists and to confirm and even exalt the approach of the Dalai Lama.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide To Happiness And Mental Health
The Declaration of Independence asserts our self-evident right to pursue happiness, but doesn't teach us how to do so. The Dalai Lama says happiness is the goal of human existence and teaches us not just how to rid ourselves of the negative thoughts from which unhappiness springs, but also how to grow into an habitually positive frame of mind. This is not a selfish pursuit since compassion and altruism are understood as essential to personal happiness. In an age of road rage and air rage, depression and anxiety, such a guide to mental hygiene and growth is needed and welcome. I was initially disappointed that the book had two authors, but now consider this a strength. Dr. Culter not only adds western psychological information that complements "Buddhist" doctrine, but also provides good descriptions of the Dalai Lama, engages him in a running dialogue, and asks the questions that I would like to ask, particularly how a non-Buddhist would use the teaching just given. As it turns out there is very little in this book that is strictly "religious" or that would be unacceptable or impractical advice to a believer in another or in no faith at all. The Dalai Lama addresses himself specifically to such people. Obviously the book needs to be put into practice, not just read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Buddhism and Dalai Lamas thoughts
This is a good book to help you learn about the principles and ideas of Buddhism. Written for a Western audience, it takes up problems of daily life and how to be happy with the right mode of thinking. How to live a balanced, peaceful and happy life. Reading the book is easy. How to follow its teachings perhaps not that easy, but obviously worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Happiness Explained By The Dalai Lama
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that is easy and interesting to read, understand, and most of all apply to your life.
Here are a couple of quotes from this book that shed light on His Holiness The Dalai Lama's Views:

P. 173: "The ability to look at events from different perspectives can be very helpful. Then, practicing this, one can use certain experiences, certain tragedies to develop a calmness of mind. One must realize that every phenomena, every event, has different aspects."

"It seems that often when problems arise, our outlook becomes narrow. All of our attention may be focused on worrying about the problem, and we may have a sense that we're the only one that is going through such difficulties. This can lead to a kind of self-absorption that can make the problem seem very intense. When this happens, I think seeing things from a wider perspective can definitely help - realizing for instance, that there are many other people who have gone through similar experiences, and even worse experiences."

When Howard Cutler questioned about dealing with anger, his question was: "...You might think about an event...even much later, and every time you think about it you become angry all over again. How would you suggest dealing with (this.")
The Dalai Lama had this to say on P. 175: "If you look from a different angel, then surely the person who caused this anger in you will have a lot of other positive aspects, positive qualities. If you look carefully, you will also find that the act which has made you angry has also given you certain opportunities, something which otherwise would not have been possible, even from your point of view. So with effort you'll be able to see many different angles to a single event. This will help."

By reading this book, you will gain a greater understanding of HOW to transform the difficulties in your life, by transforming your views of them. It will greatly contribute to your inner peace, as well as peaceful relations with others, along with how to deal with life's constant changes with calm and assurance.
Highly Recommended! Barbara Rose, author 'If God Was Like Man'

3-0 out of 5 stars FACT: Teachings in New Testament have Buddhist roots
The book is ok .... I disagree with the retarded Christian from FL. It doesn't take a degree in rocket science to note that the Old Testament and the New Testament are of a completely different flavor. The Old Testament is full of fire and brimstone, an eye-for-an-eye kind of stuff whereas the New Testament has a distinctly Buddhist slant. Gee, I wonder if the fact that Jesus Christ spent several years in Tibet studying with the Buddhist monks had an influence on his teachings?!?!... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars ULI Guide
For its high price, you may want to seriously think about your needs. If your intention is to buy a book for a broad overview of the development process with a somewhat academic approach, then this may be right for you. If you are builder or someone with prior real estate brokerage/service experience, you may find this too ivory tower and not practical. This book was a bit theoretical for my taste.

Although this book has been reprinted recently, all the data dates back to the late-1990's. Social and economic data are perhaps presented for illustrative purposes only, however, it is a bit disheartening.

There are some interesting project data, financial models and checklists, but frankly, the reader could figure those out on his/her own with some common sense and marginal experience in the industry.

Bottom line -- my suggestion is to review the book at the public library before you buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars principles & history
Interestingly, I ended up reading this book like a fiction -- from cover-to-cover. And, it was a fun read. I particularly enjoyed some of the insightful stories of real estate development history, which is clearly a part of our American heritage.

However, I thought the real-life applications of the book's suggestions were victimized by this type of presentation. Certain "case studies" were presented along side a theoretical "how-to" processes to develop properties; these seemed entertaining and thoughtfully presented, rather than real life cookie cutter. And, in many cases, I knew a famous property and became more informed of its origins and characteristics. But it did not unfortunately go the next step to discuss mistakes made, lessons learned, or successful components to highlighted -- which good case studies should endeavor. Moreover, it did not spend much time on architectural issues or financing arrangements that may have solved problems specific to the properties.

I would suggest to any potential Amazon customer to purchase this book only in conjunction with another more hardcore building book and/or architecture book.

I had to learn this material the hard way, because when I started out, there weren't any good books on development. If you want to be a developer, start here. If you're an experienced developer, you'll learn a lot from this book. I congratulate the authors for putting in such an immense amount of work. ... Read more

Due to the timing of its publication, Unfit for Command could be dismissed as the sort of controversial, loaded book typical in a presidential election year: Either courageous and necessary, or untruthful and malicious, depending on one's political point of view. Filled with interviews of men who served in Vietnam at the same time as John Kerry, the book poses the following question: "Why do an overwhelming majority of those who commanded or served with John Kerry oppose him?" (Note that the issue of "service" has sparked investigation into its definition--in other words, just how close was the interaction between Kerry and those cited in the book during Kerry’s Vietnam tour of duty?)

The charges leveled against Kerry in this book are severe and include filing false operating reports; lobbying for and receiving three Purple Hearts for minor wounds, two of which were self-inflicted; receiving a Silver Star under false pretenses; offering false confessions of bogus war crimes in both print and testimony; and recklessness in the field, including the burning of a village without cause or direct order. The book also claims that Kerry left Vietnam after serving just four months instead of the usual one year tour and that he returned home and accused his fellow soldiers of atrocities without offering any evidence, endangering POWs in the process.

It is debatable whether the book will change any minds, or votes. Instead, readers will likely reach one of two conclusions: Either John Kerry grossly misrepresented his military service or the authors are spinning the interviews that they conducted for ulterior motives. There is a third option, however; readers will further investigate both sides of the debate, and by doing so, may reach conclusions independent of partisan extremes. --Brian Neff ... Read more

The Pimsleur programs provide a method of self-practice with an expert teacher and native speakers in lessons specially designed to work with the way the mind naturally acquires language information. The various components of language -- vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar -- are all learned together without rote memorization and drills. Using a unique method of memory recall developed by renowned linguist, Dr. Paul Pimsleur, the programs teach listeners to combine words and phrases to express themselves the way native speakers do. By listening and responding to thirty minute recorded lessons, students easily and effectively achieve spoken proficiency.

No other language program or school is as quick, convenient, and effective as the Pimsleur Language Programs.

The Comprehensive Program is the ultimate in spoken language learning. For those who want to become proficient in the language of their choice, the Comprehensive programs go beyond the Basic Programs to offer spoken-language fluency. Using the same simple method of interactive self-practice with native speakers, these comprehensive programs provide a complete language learning course. The Comprehensive Program is available in a wide variety of languages and runs through three levels (thirty lessons each) in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. 5-0 out of 5 stars The best method there is
I'm married to a Taiwanese woman, and I've been trying to learn her language for ten years! According to CNN, Mandarin is number one on the list of "Ten Most Difficult Languages to Learn." Japanese is number two on the list; and English is number three (no surprise here). I salute anyone who even attempts to learn Mandarin Chinese.

Let's face it. Learning Mandarin Chinese is hard no matter what method you use, even Pimsleur's. But this is the best method there is. Believe me; I've tried them all: Transparent language, Berlitz, two semesters of Mandarin at college. With the Pimsleur method the phrases are methodically timed for the best optimal learning & recall. And you are required to put your own sentences together instead of tediously parroting back phrases like a Berlitz course.

The Chinese know how hard it is for us Westerners to learn their language. And I must say it is satisifying to see their eyes widen in surprise when I speak a little Mandarin AND be understood. Believe me, it makes a good impression.

This latest edition of Mandarin I is head over heels better than the first edition. And now Pimsleur finally released Mandarin II & III. I've just ordered Mandarin II, and I can't wait to start using it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool to facilitate further study
This was a very solid method of learning that focuses heavily on speaking and conversation. Learning characters at the same time as the speaking language can be very intimidating and most professors would agree that there should be a substantial amount of lag between the spoken and written chinese. (see Chinese Primer Ta-Tuan Ch'En - the books I use for my Georgetown University Chinese classes) The Pimsleur method does not offer character knowledge, but it does allow a student to grasp the tones and sounds which are so vital to the language. I would suggest to anyone who is listening to the audio cds to begin with the cds and then, only when comfortable with pronounciation and tones, to go pick up some character and vocabulary texts. This was definitely money well spent because it really was a great way to begin my intensive Mandarin Chinese course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even I managed to make progress....
As probably one of the worst language students in the continental US i bought this package with a certain amount of scepticism. However, i read the review by someone who claimed they listened to it in the car each day as they drove to work and ended up speaking with relative ease so it seemed it might be worth a try. After the package arrived i tried this and found myself veering into oncoming traffic and running red lights as i tried to concentrate on what the speaker was saying. i gave this up fairly quickly and finally found the best way (for me) was to go for a walk as i listened to each tape. even then i was stumbling along in an erratic manner and muttering to myself which only helped to lowering my neighbours poor opinion of me.

I had to listen to the first few tapes anywhere between 5 to 10 times before i mastered them. I followed the advice of another reviewer, picked up a copy of the Oxford English-Chinese dictionary and proceeded to write down each lesson. I am now towards the end of the set of tapes and it is definitely getting easier - I can master each tape in 2- 5 hearings, am stumbling less and speak mandarin in a clear voice, oblivious of the looks from the neighbours. I intend to get Mandarin II as soon as i am done.

and now if you will excuse me, it is time for my next lesson...

5-0 out of 5 stars The best there is!
I have a Ph.D. in linguistics and taught the subject for many years. Pimsleur is absolutely the best system out there for learning foreign languages short of being dropped in another country. (In fact, I'd still take Pimsleur with me if I were going to be set down in a foreign land.) In 30 days you will have basic functionality in the language along with excellent pronunciation-- a real Pimsleur plus. Work through the entire three levels (90 lessons) and you will reach a solid intermediate speaking level-- something that might take 4 years or more of traditional study! I started the Mandarin program from scratch and could not be more pleased. The tones, which will seem impossible at first even if you understand the theory behind them, are much easier after only 7 days and almost natural in two weeks. At the end of the 30 day first course you will barely be thinking about them any more-- so automatic will they have become. Obviously, you will need to further your studies to become as fluent in your second language as you are in English-- but there is absolutely no other course that teaches you so much, so fast, and with so little pain as Pimsleur. (By the way, I have no vested interest in this company-- I just love the system.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as usual
I have used many of the Pimsleur programs before and believe they are worth every penny. However, I have found that the Mandarin language is most difficult to learn and find myself going over each lesson more than once. None-the-less, this is an excellent program and I am learning to speak and understand Mandarin. I reccomend this product and will be purchasing Mandarin 2. ... Read more

Incorporating the thinking, feeling, and behaving dimensions of human experience, Corey offers an easy-to-understand text that helps students compare and contrast the therapeutic models. This book is the center of a suite of products that include a revised student manual, a revised casebook, a companion text, and an all-new CD-ROM. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical Overview of Counseling Therapies
Chapters are:

-Counselor characteristics and practice: This was useful for me since I haven't yet practiced

- Ethics: Unfortunately, you have to get the student manual to see the ethical standards of the various prof. organizations.

- Psychoanalitic

- Adlerian

- Existential

- Person-centered

- Gestalt

- Reality

- Behavior

- Cognitive-Behavior

- Family Systems

- Last section ties it all together

Each chapter on an approach starts with a bio on its main proponent, hits key concepts, describes the theraputic process, techniques and who it applies to. A token section of its application to multiculturalism (the author obviously doesn't live in Hawaii where the White European culture is a minority! [grin]) The author then critiques the method for its positive and negative points and tells how he incorporates it. I found this last very useful. There are from 3 to 6 books suggested for furthur in depth study (very useful!) and an extensive bibliography at the end of each chapter (for you grad students like me who have to write papers!)

Advantages - Very interesting. Lots of information. I like the personal comments on real life usefulness. I would have like more exact techniques (what to do, questionaires referenced, tests etc) but some of these are found in the student manual.

Disadvantages - DENSE! This is not an easy read. I notice that most psych articles and books use such complicated language - some of it is precise jargon but some of it isn't necessary. Also, it doesn't treat Transactional Analysis.

Student Manual - You probably should get this (see my review of it)

Overall: very useful. I'm glad it was required for my class. It is a keeper.

4-0 out of 5 stars This text has become an essential counseling theory work.
Corey's text is an essential text for those wishing to enter the counseling/therapy field. It is well-written, easily accepted by students, and covers the most important psychological theories in mental health. There has been an expansion of the family therapies chapter and chapters on ethics and counselor characteristics are outstanding. This book is used throughout Counselor Education and Mental Health training. I recommend it highly as the best overview for beginning and graduate students in the helping field.

5-0 out of 5 stars Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy
Very fast delivery!! I ordered this Monday evening and it arrived Thursday! The condition of the book was better than expected. I would definitely order from here again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Resource.
This book is an outstanding resource for seasoned therapists as well as those new to the work. One of the most unique parts of this book is the way it takes one case study and uses it to illustrate how each of the different perspectives would approach the same problem. This technique is far more effective than using different case studies to illustrate different techniques. The book also gives very detailed explanations of the perspectives, a little bio of the perspective founder, and also provides information on how to use the perspective in today's world. Another unique factor is that the book provides seperate sections within the chapters to explain the the role of the client and therapist. Of all the books I own this is the most comprehensive book that illustrates how each perspective contributes to each other, how they are similar, and how they are different, while demonstrating how a therapist can use each theory.

5-0 out of 5 stars An informative and well written book
An excellent text providing a very clear introduction to the field of Counseling and Psychotherapy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Critical Information for Writing for the APA Publications
The first question you'd have to ask about this book is Why would the American Psychological Association have a style guide.

The answer is that the APA Style is the definitive guide to the style that the APA wants to see in their publications and this style is also used by a number of other publications that have adopted the APA Style.

Among the critical points of the APA Style is how to construct an error-free reference list crediting all sources properly and avoiding all charges of plagiarism. This has become extremely critical in today's world where any research seems subject to actively looking for any way they can discredit someone else rather than do their own work.

In addition the style book is an authoritative guide to how best to present the ideas and data that is so hard to gather. Being able to present data in a way that is understandable to the reader is perhaps the most difficult yet the most important part of writing a paper.

This book is the concise version. It is a small format book designed to be convenient, portable and yet complete. ... Read more
