5-0 out of 5 stars Kotzig Clears Some of the Smoke about the Ford PCM
This book was easily read. Most of the material (85%) in the book is very easy to relate too without an engineering degree. The book is beautiful with lots of diagrams and pictures for reference. I'm looking forward to the Advanced Tuning Book and plan to purchase as soon as it is available.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ford Tuning Review
This is an information packed book. Although it does not reveal all the secrets of tuning, it does give the reader a good feel for tuning. Especially if You are new to tuning. It is a little pricey though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
Since I own a company that manufactures tuning hardware and software, I was curious to what this book was about.
After reading it, it does alot to help the reader understand what is involved in tuning the Ford PCM. It is not a "How-To" book but more of an in-depth guide on the process of tuning.
The book is full of colorful diagrams and picture that take the reader through each step in the tuning process. How the Ford EEC works, how chips work, how OBD-II scantools work and how the whole process is put together to tune a vehicle. The writing style is not dry like a technical manual, but well written and rather humorous at times.
I personally use the OBD-II code list in the book on a regular basis. The recipe section at the end is something unique.
If you want to know how the chip companies develop thier products, then this book is for you.

1-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE
I purchased this book last summer and was extremely disappointed.

From memory, here's a summary of what the book contains:

1) how engines work (2 pages or so). This is 101 material.
2) how processors work
3) how OBDII works, including signal processing (useless info for tuners)
3) anecdotal info on the Diablo chip, bordering on a sales pitch.
4) anecdotal info on Dario Orlando/Steeda.
5) lots of useless colorful pictures (PADDING) -- e.g. Dario sitting in his car tuning it (This really helps me tune mine).
6) lots of big print.
7) lots of margin space.
8) narrow columns of text.
9) a bunch of blank pages in the back for notes. PADDING.
10) a cooking (yes, COOKING) chapter on some stupid favorite recipe of the author.
11) OBDII scan codes. PADDING.

The author clearly was told to fill [n] pages so they could hardbound the thing and charge $... It reminded me of grade school when I was told to write an [n] page essay on [subject x]: Using the usual tricks, I wrote long winded sentences with no contractions, double spaced lines, and big margins. The only difference between my essays and this book is the price.

I was so mad after skimming this book that I threw it away the day I got it. I bought the book because I just purchased an EEC-Tuner and was interested in learning more about the subject. Even with my very limited knowledge on the subject, I was underwhelmed with the info presented in the book.

Don't waste your money like I did. Even thinking about this book is making me angry.

5-0 out of 5 stars how the magic works
I am an ASE Master auto technician. 25 years of factory and aftermarket training left me with no information on the magic inside the engine control module. Now I know how the magic works. Any tuner modifing a Ford engine needs this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Available!!!
This is by far the best shop manual available for the Beetle and Ghia! I have a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle Type I, and the Bently Manual has helped me more than any other book during the car's restoration. It has just about all the information you could need from a manual. And hey, it *is* the official service manual, published for Volkswagen!! There is only one downside which is not a major problem but certainly would help: there's no Index.

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Expensive, No Index, Not Good for the Average Joe
If you were to only buy one book on how to repair your Bug, DON'T buy this one. While it does contain a lot of information, it has several problems.

First, it does not have an index. Second, it does not even have a centralized table of contents. Instead, each chapter has its own table of contents.

Next, the book assumes you are working in a profesional mechanics shop, with hydraulic lifts, etc. This was made clear to me, when the section on removing the engine said to LOWER the car to 3 feet.. Shoot, I barely got the car above 2 1/2 feet with my floor jack, and that was using wood props. Also, they tell you to use lubricants that are not common, which can be substituted with a more common lubricant.

If you have the money to blow, it probably is good to have this guide, as it is the "official" one, but I would recommend the Haynes guide above this one any day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, however I wish the wiring was in color.
I purchased your book from a local VW Dealership and paid a lot more than what you sale it, but the book was still worth to me what I paid for it. My only disappoint is with the wiring diagrams lines are not in color. I ordered the book because the one I saw had the wiring diagrams in color. In effect the diagrams are basically the same as those in the Haynes catelog which is about a third the cost. Understand my point here, cost is not the issue the lack of color photos is my dissatifaction. Overall you manual is EXCELLENT, easily 5 STARS. I AM WILLING TO PAY TO FOR A COPY OF THE COLORED WIRING DIAGRAM FOR A 1972 KARMANN GHIA. IS THIS SOMETHING THAT YOU HAVE??? ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Chilton does it again - Don't waste your money
As usual Chilton has produced another manual that is useless to anyone who wants to do much more than check the tire air pressure. All repairs that require a slight bit of mechanical ability are not described and instead the reader is advised to take the car to the dealer.Don't bother buying this book.Read the owner's manual that came with the car instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Book, With Some Limitations
Chilton books have been part of my automotive coping strategy for years- one of their publications once even helped me find out where a bad repair from my mechanic went off track, and I was able to give the mechanic enough info to get the repair re-done correctly. This book seems to be okay, with one exception that is usual to Chilton guides. There is not NEARLY enough information on dismantling soft trim and dash components, and what there is does not cover the different configurations you're likely to find. For instance, this guide shows how the centre console goes together- but only the extra-cost version with the stick shift in it. The standard console- found in most Tauruses- is not shown at all. Since many owners confine their do-it-yourself efforts to fixing soft trim glitches and replacing light bulbs, this is a considerable lack in Chilton's efforts. Recommended, nontheless- there's very good info on what's under the hood, and it's very specific concerning what CAN be repaired and what is factory-set, and therefore not to be messed with. That's invaluable info on today's highly computerised cars. ... Book Description

The Right Stuff of the "Brickyard"-the name given by the racers to the fabled Indianapolis Speedway-is chronicled in Against Death and Time, for one fatal season, 1955, in the post-war glory years of racecar driving. This book tells the story of the reckless, dispossessed young men who raced not for fame or money-there was none-but for "the sheer unvarnished hell of it." Brock Yates has been writing for Car and Driver for more than thirty years and is one of the best-known people in the racing world. He raced his own car for a season in a Plimpton-like adventure recorded in Sunday Driver, one of his six books. He has published widely, from Playboy to the Wall Street Journal, and has appeared on every major television network as both a racing and automotive industry commentator. An evocative writer with an absolute command of the period, Brock integrates unexpected and fascinating detail into a character-driven story of men compelled to compete against themselves, time, and death. Brock's Dutch-like strategy of a fictional narrator observing, interrogating, and reporting on his real-life protagonists imparts the immediacy of fiction to this minutely accurate account. Black-and-white photographs are featured. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Contains Very General Information Only, Not User-Friendly
For the 1995-2001 Range Rover (P38A) owner hoping to perform their own service, this book provides only cursory guidance. The P38A was intentionally designed to be serviced by Land Rover trained personnel using proprietary equipment and this book seems intended as a series of reminders for those people. As a result, the information is not presented in an explicit and detailed fashion. Illustrations are plentiful but certainly not exhaustive. This book suffers from usability problems: it lacks an index, there are numerous editing errors that fail to properly capture model year changes, and the cumbersome layout is printed two pages per sheet and rotated 90 degrees. If your goal is to learn a bit more about the features and function of your P38A and/or to have an intelligent conversation with a Land Rover Authorized mechanic, than you are less likely to be disappointed. The steep $104 price is hardly justified by the material but if you can afford to own and maintain one of these fantastic vehicles, the price is probably not an issue. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding method!
I've looked at the "Instant Immersion" approach and "Pimsleur" -- both have good and bad points. The "Learn in Your Car Japanese" series has only good points.

As an introduction to Japanese, this method is excellent on all levels: it's pacing, structure, quality and practicality of lesson material. Notice I use the word "practicality". The material that's presented, the dialogue and phrases, are applicable to daily living in Japan, and especially to the visiting foreigner.

I highly recommend this and the following two levels that make up the complete series.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great idea / product, but has a flaw
I would give this 5 star rating if it weren't the lack of grammar features in the beginning.

My commuting to and from work takes almost two hours a day. That's the reason why I bought this product (I have both CD and cassette tape versions as each of my two cars have CD player and tape player only). I have tried two other products for learning Japanese before, but they were absolutely useless as I had to have a book in front of me while listening. This product allows you to listen to the tape or CD in the car while driving. Every word or phrase is pronounced in English first, then in Japanese twice in pure Japanese accent - with pauses in between so you can practice pronouncing it, too. It is a simple method, but it works amazingly well. Remember the most efficient way of learning a language (at least in the entry level) is by speaking and listening, not reading from a book.

It also comes with a small book that describes meaning and pronunciation of every word / phrase used in the audio feature. One can easily review it after or before listening to the tape / CD.

So what is the flaw? This does not give you grammar review in the beginning (only have completed first CD so can't tell you for the rest) so it can be confusing for some listeners at first. Japanese and English do not have the same arrangement or order when it comes to lining up subject, verb and objective. I wish this is discussed more in the beginning.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not For Beginners
Contrary to the product description, the recorings are NOT slow and designed to simulate a child's learning process! They are normal speed, said twice and then they move on to the next one. Half the time you can't hear what they're saying well enough to mimic it. Also, it could have been organized a little better. I wanted to learn something simple like, "Hello. My name is...may I speak with...". But I never found it! I think 3 CD's are generous for under [$$$], but this is for people that already know Japanese and not for people that are just learning for the 1st time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've found to date.
If your goal is to communicate verbally while traveling and you prefer to learn from interaction and practice rather than studying a book, this is an excellent resource. This gave me enough skills to get around Japan and greatly added to the enjoyment of my trip. If you have the impression that 'everyone' speaks English in Japan, then don't leave Tokyo. My simple interactions opened a lot of doors and made folks happy to deal with me rather than ignoring the tourist. It also made folks more comfortable to try a little English, after they heard my efforts at Japanese. Between the two it worked out great.

The tapes covered all the standard phrases dealing with travel and they can take you a long way. 'Denshya no eki, a doko des ka?' or 'Where is the train station?' got me out of a lot of trouble, everytime I got lost doing walking tours in the countryside.

I've also used the German tapes and have just ordered the French. I've bought many a language book and so far these are my favourite. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Everything!
We have had this book ever since we restored a 1970 ElCamino. We are currently in the middle of a 1971 Monte Carlo, and although some of the information is different, much of it is accurate for the MC as well. Our friends borrow this book so often we have to sign it out to them. Currently it is invaluable in researching a 1975 Nova. As with the MC, most of the information is the same (paint codes, etc.). I highly recommend this book to anyone researching their car!

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST way to properly identify the validity of a car.
This book gives just the right amount of detail to provide the car owner or a buyer with what the numbers really mean. It will also tell you in a hurry whether the equipment on your car is truly "original" I have accurately identified my 71 Elky as well as many others.

It is also a great reference when buying an "original" car. As some options for some cars were not identified by the factory apart from the original build sheet, the book only tells you about the numbers that you can find on various components. As an example, a 1970 SS was not identified by any of the numbers as an SS except on the build sheet. However, as any knowledgable enthusiast knows, the build number of the car (6 digits) is also stamped on the front of the block.

All in all a great book. Excellent for the Classic Chevy enthusiast Library. ... Read more

Book Description

Electric vehicles have many advantages over their gas-powered counterparts. They're ecologically sound, much cheaper to operate, and require almost no routine maintenance. Drivers can enjoy the clean-running convenience and economy of an electric vehicle for as much as it costs to buy a new car. This illustrated guide explains step by step how to build an inexpensive EV from a kit or convert an existing internal combustion engine. Build Your Own Electric Car begins with an informative history of electric vehicles, current international advances in EV technology, and a look ahead at the future of EV development. Then, author Bob Brant gives a building-block description of each EV component-motor, drive train, controllers, power supplies, chargers, and chassis-and how to put them all together to make a working vehicle. He also gives valuable advice on where to find affordable EV components and systems, how to get the most out of EV driving and ownership, and how to make the best buy, build, and conversion tradeoffs. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Want to build an electric car ? Not real easy.
I think Bob Brant really wants to help you build an electric vehicle. I feel, however that his engineering background causes him to "talk down" to the reader, who thinks " It can't be really as complex as all this ! All these formulas , etc ! " How do we know the "flux level" for a motor we buy at a garage sale ? I am too old to get an engineering degree !
Lots of "shade tree" mechanics ( like me ) will have to look further for more practical information.Such as - a 10 HP motor in a Geo Metro will be fine for trips to the grocery store but no good for highway use. Also errors have crept in, and the schematic diagrams are incomplete and puzzling. Of course, the book was published nine years ago, and technology has advanced in the EV industry, as in everything else

4-0 out of 5 stars Add this to your library
Usefull information about EV. This give you some wide idea about electric cars. It's a good book for your technical library specially if you'r going to build one EV and are a beginer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Info, lots of great tables and charts
This is really an informative book. Except for the politically-charged chapter on saving the planet from the evils of the internal-combustion engine, I really enjoyed it. One problem the reader might have is that Electric Vehicle technology advances so rapidly that some of the information is dated. All in all, it is certainly worth the price!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
This is an exceptional book for anyone looking to get the initial know-how on how to convert a gas vehicle to an electric vehicle (EV). It's full of resources to help you find the parts you are looking for to do your EV project, and it actually does a conversion in the last chapter. There are a couple things you don't hear much about in the book, such as the insidious re-wiring of the dash board, and it sort of glazes over a couple minor issues, but all in all, it's the best resource I've found yet for converting to an EV. The history buffs will enjoy the detailed history of the EV, and if you work for NASA, there are a ton of great physics problems (15, I think) to keep your brain moving. Don't let the math scare you, I discovered that "eyeballing" it works most of the time, and if it didn't work, I would just pull out the old calculator and scratch pad. My advice would be that even if you aren't planning on "Building your own EV", you should buy this book. It's full of great stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not too bad, but I don't think it is for beginners
If you can't do maths a large part of the book will be greek to you. Many things are repeated over and over. Even exact lines are repeated. It looks like the book could have been a little bit smaller if all the repetitions where taken out. If you don't know electronic stuff it might also be a problem for you. When the author gives a definition of a component he uses other components to describe it, but if you don't know what the other components are you will not understand the definition. If I didn't read the posts on the EV list I would probably not be able to understand half of the book. The book also uses the American system in the maths. If you are not American it is even more difficult to understand. I can't find the age of the book, but it looks like it is rather old. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy a Chilton's Subaru Legacy Manual
This book has errors of omission and commission. It will contradict itself from one section to the next, and doesn't portray information in a coherent format. I have learned to regard the guidance given in the book with a certain amount of skepticism. Only recommend this book if you absolutely cannot find anything else.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse than worthless
This manual is garbage. I've tried to use it for three separate jobs on my 96 Legacy and every time it has proven worthless. The latest example concerns the camshaft position sensor. The manual lists trouble codes that would confirm the diagnosis, but lacks sufficient info to get the car to display the codes. The book gives only a vague arrow in the general direction of the sensor location. It details the steps to remove the timing belt in order to change the sensor on the Legacy. As I look at it, and as my mechanic assures me, the sensor can be removed and replaced on a 96 Legacy without disassembling anything else. Worse than worthless, this book would have me spending hours on a 2 minute job!

I'm going to buy the Haynes book, and never buy another Chilton.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This book claims to cover Subarus up through 1996. The cover shows a '95-'96 Outback, which is exactly what I have. I bought the book to help me fix a faulty power window switch. In the section on removing the door panel around the switches, the newest Legacy shown is a '91, whose door panel does not have power switches at all, and is completely clipped on and must be pried off. After two of us pried around the switch area on my own car with no success, we ditched the book and discovered that the switch area of the door is firmly screwed in, and in multiple layers. Had we followed the book and kept prying, we would have damaged the door. I understand that you can't cover every difference on every model in such a wide range of model years, but I don't think it wise for the book to imply it is complete when following the book could end up in damage to your car because of inaccuracy or incompleteness. I also couldn't find information I needed on the glove box hinge and how the front passenger seat anchors to the floor. I have used Haynes manuals on my two previous cars, and am going back to buying those. They are more model-specific and contain more relevant information.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is worth the money!
I own a '95 Legacy "L" (FWD) sedan. I purchased this book to assist me in replacing the timing belt, and performing brake work. The manual is one of the best I have used. I have had Chilton, Haynes, and Clymer repair manuals for 6 or 7 different vehicles, and this manual is the most comprehensive of any of them. A previous reader rated this book very poorly, but apparently he/she did not notice that many of the "minor" maintenance items are covered in the front section of the book, including location and replacement of the PCV valve, which is not obviously visible on most Subaru's due to its design. The manual has excellent detail drawings showing various major components (drawings look like they came directly from a Subaru factory manual or parts manual). Caution, if you are not "mechanically inclined", or cannot follow mechanical drawings, this manual may be difficult for you. This manual is worth the money for anyone who is capable of performing much of their own repair and maintenance work. The book has a nice look to it (glossy cover with a good looking Outback on front!!).

1-0 out of 5 stars very poor
This book is a waiste of money and is the worst I,ve seen in repair manuals. I have several other Chilton books on fords, chevys, vws and olds and they have been very helpful. But as for the Subaru your better off working on the car blindfolded. I wanted to check my fuel pump the book doesn't tell you where the fuel pump is I had to call the dealer. The illustrations are very generic and too general. I went to re-set the check engin light, the book wasn't even close where to find the main fuse box. The book shows it located under the dash on the left side by your ankle.....Wrong! I tried to replace the PCV valve, again It doesn't tell you where to find it. Bottom line is the book just doesn't show or tell you where to start it assumes you already know. And as for trouble-shooting forget it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Limited Electrical
The book barely mentioned the trip/mileage computer much less what to do to troubleshoot, remove and replace or what else might cause a blank screen. I was very disappointed that even the wiring diagrams showed nothing concerning this unit. Also to try and track down the circuit involved the book gave no help on basics such as the fuses involved.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money
The manual covers too many vehicles in general with little detail for specifics. It's difficult to find what your looking for. If you need a manual, try the dealer. I've had bad luck with Chilton in the past, I should have known.

2-0 out of 5 stars Easy does it...
I recently purchased a 1997 Expedition, but couldn't find the owners manual. I ordered this book with hopes of clarifying some basic information. I think this book has quite a bit of data, but it is hard to read, index, and otherwise unfriendly. For example, the fuse box section does not tell you which fuses relate to which piece of equipment, making troubleshooting tough. The section on sizes and capacities is so small and marked with footnotes, I still don't know what size fuel tank I have. Also, too many models covered in this manual that aren't important to me, and too few pictures. I'm gonna try the Haynes version.

1-0 out of 5 stars does not have fuul injection charts
cant diagnose fuul injection with out fuel injection code charts for a pickup v8

1-0 out of 5 stars What a sham

1-0 out of 5 stars Incomplete and contradictory
This is a poor manual. In many cases, the instructions given even on basic repairs are incomplete (torque specifications missing, for example). It also contradicts itself - the text will say one thing, and the captions on the pictures say the opposite. For example, the instructions for replacing the air filter say that you don't need to disconnect any hoses or wires from the housing in order to remove the housing, but the pictures show you exactly what hoses and wires to remove. Regardless, I was unable to get the air filter housing open at all with these directions; I'm by no means a mechanic, but I think I should be able to change an air filter with a well-written repair manual. Also, the information about the rear washer system isn't detailed enough - I can't find the rear washer reservoir where this book says it is. Perhaps they left out some Golf-specific details and the description of this system only applies to the more-popular Jetta? Hopefully I'll find out soon, because I've returned this book and ordered the Bentley manual, which costs three times as much but will hopefully be complete and consistent.

1-0 out of 5 stars Haynes repair manual
This book is not up to the standards of any other Haynes book I've ever owned. It is more like the Chilton manuals-poorly illustrated- that created a market for the Haynes manuals in the beginning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does Not Cover all 1999 Models
Potential buyers should take note that this book does not really cover most VW's that were produced in 1999. It covers only those on the A3 frame, not the A4. The A3 frame was used briefly in 1999 and replaced in 1999 with the A4. VW refers to them both as 1999 models. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ...just what you need...
This manual is just what you need in order to be able to service your vintage Honda. Not only does it describe every possible repair, but also it improves your understanding of how the Honda 750 DOHC works. Here are some of the features, which I especially value in the manual:

1. The text follows systematically the actual sequence of the described repair/service.This is probably the single most important point for me and I can not stress enough how meticulously detailed the text is.I have never felt lost, or surprised, or unable to follow the guidance offered by this manual.
2. A clearly numbered photograph gives visual clarification of every stage of the repair/service. The clearly marked photos give a useful visual aid in identification of components - if you have doubts about which the primary needle jet is, after seeing a photo of the whole float bowl area with the jet in a circle, you should be able to figure it out.
3. Common practices and malpractices are described preemptively, which is very useful for the amateur mechanic.
4. The Troubleshooting and the Maintenance and Tune-Up sections give excellent information on motorcycle diagnostics and prophylactics.

In conclusion, I must say that the Clymer publications have been more that just workshop manuals - they have been great textbooks from which I learned the basics of motorcycle maintenance. They are indispensable.Of the many publications out there, they are also the best.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you own this bike, you should own this book.
Doing for motorcycles what Chilton does for cars. This book has great information, like how to give an oil change, how to check your chain, how to replace a headlight and how to rebuild your engine.Everything fromlittle to small is in this book. The index is very poort however and theTOC is also lacking, but the book does have markers on the right hand sideto easily find the chapter you are looking for. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for AutoMechanicTools.com
It is a very good book for someone who is interested in building and repairing a car from the bottom up. It gives a good techniques on repairing and building a car. It also gives points on some mistakes others have made and trys to save your priceless time. The instruction manual from the manufacturer would be much more valuable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Handbook is a bit strong, Subtitle is much better.
Easy to read, ample pictures, and clear concise language. Recommended for those who are looking at getting into kitcars/hot rods or those just starting off on a first project. It touches base on the different systems of a car, enough specifics to let you get a feel, though it's a bit too general for helping out in the tight spots of specific cars.
As mentioned, handbook is probably a bit too strong a word to use for this book. The subtitle, however, points in a much better direction. This book covers those little things that you would usually only learn after your first time. It tries to impart that little bit of wisdom and experience to the reader. My copy was published in 1997, so one or two things don't keep on the cutting edge of the industry, but then most people who would find this useful aren't going to have a state of the art garage either.
Definately a good addition to the garage library for those interested in working on cars from the ground up, and looking for a helpful guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best car book ever!
This book helped me builder my kitcar. I was a first time builder and i was having a difficult time building. I bought the book and it became a lot easier.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for one who is building a car from the ground up.
It is a very good book for someone who is interested in building a car from the chassis up. It gives a good techniques on suspension and brakes. It also gives points on some mistakes others have made and trys to steer you clear of them. I have built several kit cars and this time I am building the frame and suspension. The book does not add too much help for one who is just putting a fiberglas body on a donor car. The instruction manual from the manufacturer would be much more valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars By far the best engine book I've seen
I have rebuilt many engines of many different brands, I have read MANY books on rebuilding these engines, and this book by FAR is the best book I have seen, It gives step by step instructions and it makes doing it SOOO easy, even if you have never picked up a wrench, with this book you can rebuild a Big Block Mopar. This book actually makes doing work fun and easy. This book is a MUST for any person who wants to rebuild a BB Mopar and build it right.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for "B" Mopar engines
I have not worked on cars for 20 years but then I bought a 76 Dodge Pickup that needed engine work. I knew that I would be over my head when I removed the valve covers. That is when I decided to get a book on Mopar engines. When I received the book I started reading expecting a book for mechanics, but what I found was a how-to rebuild a big block Mopar. It is written as if the author was telling you step by step just exactly how to remove, disassemble and repair the engine. He told what to look for and how to fix it. Then step by step how to re-assemble the engine and put it back in the vehicle. All of the while passing informative tips and a few tricks. The book helped me avoid several costly mistakes. It is a must have for anyone considering rebuilding a big block Chrysler.

4-0 out of 5 stars MOPAR or no car: a review of How to rebuild B-Block Mopars
How To Rebuild Big-Block Mopar Engines by Don Taylor is a very informative book. It covers everything from inspection of your old engine, removal from vehicle to disassembly and reassembly. Also includes proper cleaning techniques as well as machining recommendations. This detailed book includes casting numbers for blocks, cranks, rods, cylinder heads, intake manifolds and water pump housings for those who want an accurate restoration or those needing help with identification of parts. This book is more detailed about B/RB disassembly/reassembly and problem areas and tips to make the job easier than other general engine rebuilding books. Don gives step by step instructions on reassembly with plenty of pictures to help. This book will help the novice or experienced engine builder do a better job on his Mopar.

5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK FOR ALL ENGINE BUILDERS
HOW TO REBUILD BIG - BLOCK MOPAR ENGINES BY DON TAYLOR IS BY FAR THE BEST BOOK OF IT'S KIND I HAVE FOUND. DON MAKES IT FUN TO GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY. ANYONE CAN BUILD A "GOOD" MOTOR USING THIS BOOK.IT IS FUN AND VERY EASY TO FOLLOW. A MUST HAVE FOR ANY GEARHEAD. KEITH.

5-0 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried! A true love story!! MOPAR!!
Way better than Titanic. Makes it look like a bedtime story!! It's in a league of it's own.

This book was excellent. I read it cover to cover 3 times and it just got better each time. "Big blocks, big blocks, big blocks!!" Includes pictures of every step and engine part and is very easy to understand. Has a complete listing of casting numbers, specs on parts, etc. Great for the beginner or someone who has done it before. You always forget something, and this book reminds you to do it. My favorite part is when you put the distributor back in- you know you'll have tons of torque in no time and the suspense is exillerating! I also like all the grease and oil- I love being dirty under the hood (if you know what I mean).

Feel free to email with questions about it. Isn't this such a generic review??

1-0 out of 5 stars Wish I could give it less that 1 star
I purchased this book to find out how to repair the heater and change the fuel filter on my 1990 diesel F250. It offered no help on either. Trees have fallen in the forest for no good reason.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a lemon!
Chiltons books used to help me rebuild engines, transmissions, axles and more. They were very detailed and helpful. When I opened this one to try to troubleshoot the transmission, it says the only thing I am smart enough to do is check the fluid level. Beyond that, I need to go to a mechanic.

Somewhere along the line, Chiltons has become completely worthless. I'm not wasting my time or money on them anymore.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chilton continues to be a seething hotbed of mediocrity
I have "shade tree'd" my way through over 40 years of Haynes, Chilton and Motor repair manuals. Chilton has gone from being a moderately good reference source for technical data in the early 60's to a few hundred sheets of disposable shop rags. The offering in question has an almost complete lack of diagnostic information, and is nothing more than a list of vague instructions on how to take your truck apart.

The worst aspect of this over-priced bird cage liner is the illustrations. In an age of life-like digital imaging and computer-aided drafting; my $16 got me a pile of pictures that could well have been reproduced on a 50's vintage stencil duplicator.

3-0 out of 5 stars Has a lot of useful information, but could use improvement
Some of the illustrations are poor or hard to read and the appendix does not list items the way I like, making it harder than necessary to get to the information I am looking for. Overall the information has been there, just hard to dig out sometimes. I bought it for a 90 F250 4x4 that is a work/plow truck and it has been helpful. I wish it had a better troubleshooing section, but for the money it's not a bad deal. If you can, visually check it out before you buy to see if it covers what you need. I had a chance to look at the big "Chilton general truck manual" and it had some information that this one didn't but it also had its shortcomings. I don't know what a Ford Workshop manual costs but if its reasonable and had all the information with better illustrations that would be the best bet for the really in depth information. Again it just depends on how far and deep you want to go in doing your own repairs. Its worth the money just has some shortcomings. If you are going to keep the truck for a long time and really like it then I would probably go for the "real" Ford shop manuals. Find a friendly dealer and check the Ford manuals if can and compare. I probably will not keep this truck long term (for me that means until it dies) so thats why I didn't pursue the Ford Manuals. Sorry to ramble

3-0 out of 5 stars Good general reference, but lacks specific-year information.
This is a good, inexpensive general reference for those who need to familiarize themselves with the vehicles in this series and who need general information. There are some generalizations, areas which lack detail and errors due to the wide variation in models during the years covered. Expect this manual to provide general information on major systems and general procedures; don't expect detailed diagrams and specific locations of small parts. The scope of the book over many years and models prevents a high degree of specificity. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Overview of Available Aftermarket Combinations
This was a pretty good book as far as showing you how much power certain combinations make. Nothing in this book is terribly enlightening though if you're a regular reader of Hot Rod, Car Craft and other high-performance magazines. But it's fairly comprehensive. It does not get into engine theory much or the process of engine building/assembly at all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ford Windsor Small-Block Performance
Almost as good as the Mathis book. It covers a lot of performance companies, including Saleen and Vortech. The only thing I didn't like was the retrofitting chapter where the author tells you how to retro fit a 302 into an old muscle car. It should've been spent on fitting a 351W into a SN95 V6 engine bay; now that would've help me more.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Money! Don't do what I did!
I bought this book to learn how to Swap a EFI 5.0 in my old '67 Mustang, because it has a whole chapter devoted to it. It told me nothing more than what I already learned before from the Windsor-Fox. I looked over the rest of the book at its information about engine rebuilding, and found it just as worthless. If you want to learn how to Swap an EFI 5.0, you'll just be wasting your money on this book, and if you are looking to rebuild your engine, this book is a waste of your time. There are so many better books that cover performance engine rebuilding out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
If you are rebuilding your old 289, Boss 302, 5.0HO, 351W, 347 stroker or any other Windsor based motor YOU NEED THIS BOOK!

The book is filled with valuable insight for building a street or purely strip motors. Disucssions of specs, supercharging, nitrous, roller cam conversion they are all included. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great history recount
I would recommend this one to any cycle enthusiast; however I did miss:
- More mechanical facts
- A more thorough coverage of all models (e.g. the 800 sporstster is barely mentioned)
Otherwise, a must-have.

4-0 out of 5 stars A century in the life of The Hog
Clearly a grand advertisement & a fine way to take a peek at the transformation of The Hog. Along the way you'll catch glimpses of both ten decades of advertising & dressage styles.

If you're expecting to see the development of the mystique we've come to associate with The Hog, you will be disappointed for those who make The Hog are not necessarily those with whom it is associated. I don't think I've seen so many squeaky-clean, carefree people up close, sans helmets too!

Actually, a fascinating book & certainly one any lover of motorbikes, the open road & social styles will enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Willy G. - American Icon
First class work from the top-shelf Harley Davidson Guy, grandson of the founder. If you buy any Harley book in your life get this. Don't miss the chance to read the rare Harely novel "THE SECOND COMING OF AGE" by: Vedrine. These books will be collectable classics; highly treasured and read at the next centennial celebration.

5-0 out of 5 stars 100 Years of HD by Willie G.
This book is written from the heart and soul of the one and only Willie G. It has great pictures and great stories. No one can tell them like the people who experienced it from within.

Get it now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Look Past The Corporate Promotion and...
you'll find a good read. First, the pictures are sensational. They capture the simplicity which is at the heart of H-D's designs since inception. Also, this book explains many of the bike and engine nicknames, that I was always curious about, in an easily understandable way i.e. Shovelhead, Flathead etc....

It also covers most of basic history of the MoCo but does so in a corporate promotional way. The author glosses over the AMF years when the quality of their products were poor. It's a 1 or 2 sentence mention and I think deserved more specifics. This is the only major soft spot in the book in that, at times, it seems like one of their rah rah brochures. Look past that and you'll find a great coffee table book.

One question the book left me with is how much the author is genuinely involved in the design of bikes. He may just wish to support the other people involved (humbly). Otherwise, to read the book it seems his major talent is drawing logos (as it reads). The book wasn't solid on that. ... Read more
