5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all
I am in the Coast Guard myself and when I was in boot camp they even handed out copies of this book to us to learn what we needed to know about the USCG. It covers everything from a brief history to customs and courtesies and to Maritime Law Enforcement. It talks about the different knots we use and how to properly tie the knot. There's history on the USCG's uniforms and the different ships we use to the different jobs that we offer. It's a great book for all and I even find myself at times referring to it whenever I need to know something! So I recommend it for anyone who is entering the Coast Guard, looking to up their seamanship skills or just want a refresher!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still Excellant
I was issued one of these in boot camp back in 79. As a American Legion Commander now, I needed to know how to properly handle a weapon while marching and doing drills. Darn I wish I had of keep it. But I ordered the latest edition and see it is still the great manual it always was and still has the commands and the examples of how to do proper manual of arms.

3-0 out of 5 stars A new edition is needed
I was in the CG 20 years ago, but this book didn't really fill me in on what I've missed over the last two decades. This edtion of the Coast Guardsman's Manual is getting a bit long in the tooth, particularly in regard to the enlisted specialty ratings. Most of the aviation ratings are gone or have been consolidated and renamed yet you'll still find, for example, Aviation Structural Mechanic listed and described. It's the same with some of the other ratings also. With the demise of CW (Morse Code) 500kHz maritime distress watchkeeping the Radioman rating was changed years ago to Telecommunications Specialst. Its just a pity the CG didn't take away their "sparks" insignia and make it a cell phone instead. And one other thing... is the Coast Guard ever going to change that boring dress uniform? No wonder the vast majority of Americans have no idea that the CG is a branch of the military. The dress uniform makes them look like bus drivers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The manual for US Coast Guard history and information.
As a former Coast Guardsman, I can't say enough about this manual, which is issued to every recruit at boot camp. The information within is relied upon by members throughout their career from boot camp, where it is known as the "Blue Book", to paygrade advancements. If you need information on the roles the Coast Guard has played in history, vessel and aircraft specs and missions or even signaling, this is our basic source.

5-0 out of 5 stars The CG Manual is a sailors manual for survival!
I am a life long Coastie. My father served in the USCG, my brother serves in the USCG, and I too still serve in the USCG. The CoastGuardsman's manual is a book about survival. The CG manual is a book on sailor life. History, terminology, careers, objectives, duties, and jobs are all contained in this manual. Along with these subjects, this CG manual is a sailors survival guide to being a Coastie. Explanations how to survive the sea, how to rescue and keep alive an injured civilian. This Manual sums up the Coast Guard better than any other book published today. It gives a glimpse into the oldest military force in this nations history. Only the Coast Guard has been around since the days of Washington and Jefferson. The CG has changed in many ways in the past 200 plus years and the CG Manual describes these changes. For anyone who has either been curious about or has had family in the Coast Guard, you shall not find a more complete guide to this branch of service. The Coast Guard has a crede, and it is what every Coastie strives for, what the public needs from the Coast Guard. Whether at war or in times of peace, this nations Coast Guard shall forever be "SEMPER PARATUS" ----Always Ready ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gene Shalit's review on The Today Show 12/22
For everyone who has ever heard the siren's song of being a fireman, Firefighters from Hugh Lauter Levin, is a cavalcade of every facet, faucet, fact and artifact of firefighting; from the horse-drawn to the horse-power; the total picture of a valiant profession.

5-0 out of 5 stars Firefighters...An Exceptional Effort
"Firefighters" is by far the most interesting narrative and visual accounting of fire service history that I have ever seen. It is perfect for anyone with an interest in the fire service. Each author does a great job with their chapter...including just the right amount of text complemented by many visuals that bring their words to life. Considering the quality of the book, and that every sale benefits the families of firefighters who have died in the line of duty, I couldn't have made a better choice than to buy "Firefighters" as addition to my living room coffee table. You should buy the book...I'm glad I did...and you will be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Football violence, just crowd culture ?
It was Bill Shankly, ex Liverpool manager, who said "Football is'nt a matter of life and death, it's more important than that". This book goes someway to capture the passion and importance of Football in English culture, and the extreme lengths that some so called supporters go to feel that they belong. As a true English Football supporter, I felt somewhat annoyed that readers of the book from other countries would feel that all English Football supporters behave in this manner, this is NOT true. But this book does accurately portray the minority who caused and still cause the atrocities described. The book works on two levels, to shock with horrific stories of brutal violence, and at a much deeper level to explain crowd behaviour and how this can be manipulated. Overall this is a valiant attempt by an American to explain English Football violence, which to my suprise was successfull.

4-0 out of 5 stars The View From Inside the Mob
Bill Buford is now fiction editor for The New Yorker. But for many years he lived in Cambridge, England, where he revived the literary quarterly Granta and brought it to prominence. While residing in Britain, he became fascinated with soccer hooligans, who visited a dreadful wave of violence on cities all over Europe in the 1980s.

There's much to commend Buford's book. The portraits of the people he comes to know are pointed, vivid, and well rounded. He's particularly able as a narrator of violence, carrying the reader along for page after page of his accounts of riots forming and then "coming off."

Much of what's interesting about the book is Buford's account of his own recognition of the inner thug, so to speak. When he begins his story, Buford is full of smug generalities and facile answers. He's sure he knows who the thugs are -- young, unemployed, uneducated yobs -- and why they're wild in the streets -- social protest. Then he begins to meet some of them and enter their social sphere, and realizes he's wrong. Many of them are older than he'd thought, family men with children and decent jobs. They're not protesting anything -- they're fighting because it's fun. And as he gains acceptance among them, Buford realizes that he, too, feels an atavistic thrill when the combat begins.

English readers have suggested that Buford may have been taken in a few times by Brits having some fun with a gullible Yank. That might well be, but most of the book is an eyewitness account. Compelling reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Social Commentary
I thought this book would simply be a blow-by-blow recitation of the crimes and violence perpetrated by Britain's soccer "hooligans." I was very pleasantly surprised that it turned out to be much, much more. Mr. Buford gives a very nice discussion of the crowd mentality and explains from a first-hand perspective how quickly a large event can turn violent. He also does a nice job of explaining how the social environment in Britain led to the conditions that allowed large number of disaffected young men with few other outlets for their frustrations than Saturday games and riots.

3-0 out of 5 stars Being a Thug
Very interesting, if a little unfocused, book. I recall the 1980s when English fans seem to be the rampage when ever they leave the country. One of the benfits of football becoming more upmarket is that most of this violence is now just history.
The book starts great, but towards the end it becomes repetive and I had less and less interest in the characters.
While not the sociological explanation for the fan violence, it does at times give us a sense of atmosphere in the bars and stadioms, and especially in the streets.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer
It seems to happen every year. We are presented with stories of violence from across the Atlantic as large groups of football "supporters" clash with each other on game day, ferociously fighting each other in an apparent attempt to proclaim their team superior. But aside from what we are shown on television - young men, rioting, destroying property, beating each other senseless - we know very little about what makes it all happen.
Bill Buford has attempted to answer this question in "Among the Thugs."
What he has produced is an excellent account of what takes place on the weekends during football season. Buford has gone to great lengths to make this book as informative, detailed, and objective as possible. He touches on everything, from the semi-organized structure of each group of "supporters," to the rituals they partake in prior to the beginning of the game, and even the famed terraces of the football ground. Included among the accounts of the violence are Bill Bufords own analysis of the "lads" he encounters, the dynamic of large groups, and what causes groups to become violent in the first place. Coupled with great narration and sarcastic humor, this book makes for a great read.
There is, however, one drawback. Mr. Buford does not spend much time on why exactly these "supporters" engage in violence. He offers a few suggestions - social protest, dangerous nationalism, among others - but eventually concludes that it is simply due to boredom, a conclusion that leaves one with a sense that they haven't been told everything.
It is this reason alone that I suggest that this book as an excellent primer for those interested in football violence. It's certainly not an exploration of generalized crowd violence, but I do not think that it is meant to be. Overall, this is a good book. ... Read more

Book Description

After September 11, 2001 Las Vegas Police Sergeant Randy Sutton began soliciting writing from law enforcement officers-his goal being to bridge the gap between the police and those they serve, with a book that offers a broad and thoughtful look at the many facets of police life.Hundreds of active and former officers responded from all over the United States: men and women from big cities and small towns, some who had written professionally, but most for the first time. Sutton culled the selections into five categories: The Beat, Line of Duty, War Stories, Officer Down, and Ground Zero.

The result is True Blue, a collection of funny, charming, exciting, haunting stories about murder investigations, missing children, bungling burglars, car chases, lonely and desperate shut-ins, routine traffic stops, officers killed in the line of duty, and the life-changing events of September 11.Here, officers reveal their emotions-fear and pride, joy and disgust, shame and love-as they recount the defining moments of their careers. In these stories, the heart and soul behind the badge shines through in unexpected ways. True Blue will change the way we think about the deeply human realm of police service.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power and Truth
You may call me biased, because I'm one of the authors in True Blue. ("The Emotional Switch" Page 32.) However, the stories by my fellow author/police officers included in True Blue, beat anything I've read in terms of power, valor and truth. Randy Sutton's, "Her Name Was Jackie" is one of many such.

This book will make you laugh, upset your viewpoint and let you know what it's like to be on the gritty, and often extreme end of both cops and citizen's real life stories. All proceeds from this book go to the survivors of police officers killed in the Sept. 11th attacks.

Randy Sutton wrote in my copy of True Blue, "Thanks for being part of the True Blue Family." No Randy. I'm honored. You, Cassie Wells, St. Martin's Press, and all those who buy this book are making a positive difference by giving back to surviving police families who've all lost and given so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Very good book. A quick read because of the short stories. Gives a nice outlook on Police life, the funny, the sad and the amazing. I wished that there was more stories to read. Just the right amount of 9/11 stories which are sad to read.

Some of these stories brought tears to my eyes--a few made me laugh out loud. If you want to learn about the emotions behind the badge, this is the book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the read!
An excellent "story" book for law enforcement officers, their families, their friends, and the general public!

My family includes several generations and types of cops, including a husband who retired as a sergeant after 25 years of service and a son who is now a young patrol officer making his own way and earning his own memories.... I am blessed to count many friends within the LEO community where I served alongside them during my own career.

I grew up with them, lived with them, and worked with them.

I have always known that cops were human.

Book Description

"There's an old saying in Tennessee -- I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee -- that says, fool me once, shame on --shame on you. Fool me -- you can't get fooled again."

With signature remarks like these, it's hardly surprising that George W. Bush's malapropisms have become renowned around the world. Editions of Bushisms have become bestsellers in Germany, France, and Italy, and they remain as popular in the United States as ever. Jacob Weisberg, faithful scribe, here presents the best of the latest crop:

"There's only one person who hugs the mothers and the widows, the wives and the kids upon the death of their loved one. Othershug but having committed the troops, I've got an additionalresponsibility to hug and that's me and I know what it's like."

"I'm the master of low expectations."

"First, let me make it very clear, poor people aren't necessarily killers. Just because you happen to be not rich doesn't mean you're willing to kill." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Did he really say that???
That is the question that keeps returning. This is incredibly funny in a laugh out loud kind of way. Now if only it were illustrated like the George W. Coloring Book which had me laughing even harder. I reccommend all three.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't know whether to laugh or cry
Make no mistake about it. Apart from a few flubs, this is not a book of mere malapropisms, nor would the first-rate journalist Jacob Weisberg have compiled it if that's all it amounted to.

No, to the careful reader, this book offers insight into the frighteningly simple mind (and shallow character) now in charge of decisionmaking on vital matters of war, diplomacy, the economy and the environment.

For example, is this a man who cares to learn anything about environmental protection in the Arctic?

..."the explorationists are willing to only move equipment during the winter, which means they'll be on ice roads, and remove the equipment as the ice begins to melt, so that the fragile tundra is protected."

Sure, you'll laugh, and laugh hard, but the question all Americans should ponder after reading this book is: how did someone of this caliber come to power in the world's greatest meritocracy? Where is the accountability of the university powers-that-be who admitted W. to Harvard and Yale? Why was much of the U.S. press and public in 2000 so oblivious to Bush's SCANDALOUS lack of preparation for the highest office in the land? Where was the examination of his character back in 2000, when Bush made it a leading campaign issue?

This is the book Kafka urges us to read: a book that "bites and stings" with implied rebuke: how did we let this calamity (this president of both breathtaking stupidity and impoverished character) happen?

4-0 out of 5 stars Bush, what a joke...
I'm only 15 years old and I've only voluntarily read one book(John Lydon's autobiography) but over the past 2 years, I'm sick of the headlines every day, soldiers and civilians being killed cause of this maniac called Bush. Specially since my cousin is over there and could probably die. I picked up this book today cause I didn't have enough money to buy a serious one, so it was a cheap, easier and funnier alternative, wich I actually read in no more than 45 minutes. It's a great book specially if you're classified by many as 'treasonous', but then again, many Bush supporters could also get a kick out of this book. The downside of this book is that it's just too short. It's alright considering this is the 3rd release, that's how dumb Bush is. I'm really intrested in politics and this book was just a starter for other books I want to buy, like "The Lies of George Bush", "The Five Biggest Lies Bush Told Us About Iraq" and "Winning Back America" by Howard Dean.
Well I hope this review sounded coherent enough. I recomend you just read the book in the store. It's that fast and easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars That Moron on Pennsylvania Avenue
This is one of the funniest books I have read! Maybe now those who support Bush will realize they are supporting the worst president ever. The election is this year, and four years of this jerk has been enough. It's time for change, and this man will destroy society to give the rich moreand the poor less.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Cheap and Easy Way to Make a Quick Buck
The only dumb people the "author" is focusing on are the ones who will actually pay money for something like this. (Someone gave me the copy I read.) This is an effortless collection of common, everyday misspeaks. Obviously, Mr. Weisberg is using this opportunity to express his frustration at his own low self-esteem, lack of success, or other poor quality. These types of "books" should never be published. They are useless, meaningless, and certainly not entertaining. It serves as much purpose as the Al Gore CD of his flubs. People need to appreciate leadership, and if they want to do something about changing it, seek the legal, formal, and most resultant ways of doing so. I'm glad I wasn't given the first two editions to read. And I certainly won't buy them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Most important book on the presidency in decades
Skworonek has written a magesterial study of the American presidency, fundamentally reinterpreting it through a novel historical framework. His writing style is very dense, and often unclear - but the hard work necessary to understand him is well worth the effort.

I first read this as an undergraduate, then twice again in graduate school. Each reading brought out new insights I missed the previous time.

No student of the presidency can afford not to read this. Quibble with him on some details, perhaps, but overall no one can doubt its lasting importance. An instant classic.

4-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT, but a tad dense
This is definitely a difficult book, and understanding certain critical passages may require several readings. In short, this is NOT a good book for an introduction to presidential politics and leadership. For a more readable and still highly regarded account, Neustadt's seminal work is a good choice. However, none of this is to say that Skowronek's book is not brilliant--it is, and reading it carefully is a very profitable experience and will enhance anyone's understanding of the presidency, agree with Professor Skowronek or not. Through all the technical references, Skowronek proposes a paradigm for assessing presidential leadership: Reconstruction, Disjunction, Articulation, and Pre-emption, all of which are based on the nature of the government and its commitments (vulnerable or resilient) and on the president's relationship to that regime (opposed or affiliated). Reconstruction results when presidents are opposed to a vulnerable regime--here are the "great" presidents: Lincoln, FDR, and Reagan, for example. Affiliation with a vulnerable regime produces Disjunction. Articulation results from affiliation with a resilient regime. And Pre-emption is the product of opposition to a resilient regime. Of course, this merely scratches the surface of Skowronek's argument, for which he argues quite well and which he approaches from a fairly historical perspective. I highly recommend this for anyone wishing to gain a deeper, fuller understanding of presidential leadership, especially in considering how much a president's skills affect what type of leader he is and how much circumstances shape his presidency.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent
I read this as part of a course (taught by the author himself) in my sophomore year of college. Skowronek is I think to be applauded for his historical approach to presidential politics, and for his style of writing: it seems more as if youre reading a story than a political science book. Time and time again, Skowronek comes back to his thesis and main themes (legitimacy and presidents ability to correctly understand and manipulate their historical moment. The book never loses focus as Skrownek discusses different presidents or as he tells stories about a particular president. And hes done his research really really well. In particular his use of presidential quotes is very very impressive. Numerous times he gives examples of Presidents who attempt to build political legitimacy using words that fit very well into Skowronek's conceptual framework ("preserving foundations", recovering old sacred truths, continuing work that has already begun). The problem with Skowronek's book is that I think, given the sort of analysis hes doing here, its not very naunced. Im sure for example, articulation presidents often distanced themselves from their predecesors in some form or another. Some may not have a problem with this: after all S. is trying to prove his point and prove it well. However I thought at times that the book could have been more nauanced. Just my thoughts....OHH BUY THE BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Presidency in Political Time
In "The Politics Presidents Make,"Stephen Skowronek presents a sweeping indictment of the Neustadtian view on presidential leadership made famous in Richard Neustadt's classic text, "Presidential Power." Skowronek challenges Neustadt's assertion that presidents after FDR represent a distinct group of incumbents, who, because of the constant challenges of modernity, cannot make due with the formal powers of the president--which is a mere "clerkship"-- and must instead utilize informal authority to "get things done," something "pre-modern" presidents did not have to do consistently. Skowronek views such a notion as a conceit of modern times, and he incorporates "pre-modern" presidents into his analytical framework, which gives the reader a better understanding of the presidency as it is weighed against the emergent structures of power and in relation to the recurrent structures of authority. Skowronek also disputes the idea that each president is at liberty to "be as big as he can be." The differences in "great" presidents and "incompetent" presidents arises not out of differences in skills-- i.e. bargaining ability-- but instead out of differing political identities vis-a-vis the current political order. Because the presidency is, in constitutional terms, an order shattering, order-affirming, and order-creating political institution, successful presidents are those-- like Jefferson, Jackson, Lincoln, FDR, and Reagan-- who are able to reconcile the order-shattering and order-affirming impulses by creating new standards for constitutional governance. This type of leadership stance-- reconstructive leadership-- is the most potent form of leadership because it allows for a reconciling of the order-shattering and order-affirming aspects of the presidency, which enables such incumbents to legitmate their actions, the key to successful leadership. Skowronek has written a superb book-- one of the best books on the presidency ever written-- and it is valuable because it correctly identifies legitimacy as the most important aspect of leadership and not skills.

4-0 out of 5 stars A seminal study of American presidency
Skowronek is a professor of political science in Yale University. This book is a seminal book on American presidents. Skowronek distinguishes four kinds of presidents: reconstruction, articulation, disjunction, and a "Clinton" kind of president. (He has a special name for it, but I think calling it "Clinton" may be more comprehensible to possible readers of this review): a president who wants to make his mark, yet still facing stiff political opposition; most likely to be impeached(prophetic!) Skowronek proposes a cyclical history, with the reconstruction kind always following a disjunctive one. The president is mainly seen from a Weberian constitutionally built-in charisma type, to upset and reform the political order. The book is long, but should worth the time. ... Read more

Book Description

The U.S.-Mexico border is the busiest in the world, the longest and most dramatic meeting point of a rich and poor country, and the site of intense confrontation between law enforcement and law evasion. Border control has changed in recent years from a low-maintenance and politically marginal activity to an intensive campaign focusing on drugs and migrant labor. Yet the unprecedented buildup of border policing has taken place in an era otherwise defined by the opening of the border, most notably through NAFTA. This contrast creates a borderless economy with a barricaded border.

Peter Andreas argues that the sharp escalation in law enforcement provides a political mechanism for coping with the unintended consequences of past policy choices. Law enforcement is enthusiastically embraced as a remedy for the very problems state practices have helped to create. The high-profile display of force, Andreas emphasizes, has ultimately been less about deterring illegal crossings and more about re-crafting the image of the border and symbolically reaffirming the state's territorial authority.

Extending the analysis to the borders of the European Union, Andreas identifies different forms of law enforcement escalation that reflect distinct historical legacies and regional contexts. Andreas challenges the notion that borders are irrelevant in an age of globalization and stresses that, rather than eroding, some critical borders are being reinforced and remade. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes Desert Is Better Than the Meal
Ward Churchil and Jim Vander Wall have done an outstanding and meticulous job in assembling and explaining the FBI's secret war on dissent in America, no wonder America is plagued with criminals, the supposed "good guys" are all out on black bag jobs committing their own crimes!!

Since it is a well known historical fact that J. Edgar Hoover, America's semen stained supercop, was blackmailed by the mafia into silence, it stands to reason that he would need a new enemy to focus the attention of the American people. What better enemy than home grown political dissenters who would destroy the genteel American order--white men first.

The book focuses upon the FBI's most notorious episodes--the COINTELPRO efforts against the Communist Party USA, Socialist Workers Party, the New Left, the American Indian Movement and the Black Panthers as demonstrative proof of the Bureau's efforts to undermine and destroy the constitutional rights of all Americans.

It is, for me, the concluding chapter that ties everything together and offers some real life solutions to the peristent cancer that is the FBI. From 1956 to the "offical end" of COINTELPRO in 1971, the FBI committed:

* 2,218 separate actions.

*2,305 admitted warrantless telephone taps.

*697 "bugs against domestic political targets."

*57,486 CIA mail intercepts.

"During the various Congressional committee investigations, the Bureau carefully hid the facts of its involvement in the 1969 Hampton-Clark assassinations. Simultaneously, it was covering up its criminal witholding of exculpatory evidence in the murder trial of LA Panther leader Geronimo Pratt." page 303.

At the end, the authors offer the inescapable conclusion that priority number one is for the left to develop a strategy to come to grips with the FBI and the escalating power of "law enforcement" as well as the implications and consequences of the merging of the U.S. military and the domestic law enforcement appartus.

Churchill and Vander Wall have written an excellent book which recounts history and warns us of the impending scenario we face by ignoring the increased power of the FBI, the US military and law enforcement in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars If history repeats itself we are all in trouble
For readers who may have forgoten what can happen when government intelligence agencies are given free rein, legally or not, to investigate and harass American citizens who question governmental policies, this is the primary source for a reminder.Tracing the long history of political repression in this country from the 1950s through the Vietnam era and the Civil Rights movement and examining recent FBI activities, this book belongs on any reader's shelf that values political freedom.
It is not a question of which political party you belong to or whether you are considered left or right on the political spectrum. If you are anxious about the future of civil liberties given the unprecedented power given to the government as the result of the Patriot Act and other recent legislation, this book should be required reading. It is indeed a fine balance between civil liberties and national security and this book will give the reader an idea of what is at stake and what unrestrained government is capable of doing. ... This introductory book explores the fundamentals that are generic to all types of investigations — criminal and otherwise. Using real cases to illustrate how investigators actually work in a variety of situations, it provides readers with a solid background for the more specialized training they will encounter on the job. Draws upon the author's extensive training and work with the FBI, U.S. Department of State, and as an attorney and corporate security director. Acknowledges that both public and private sector investigators have occasion to conduct investigations unrelated to crimea topic largely ignored in other books. Emphasizes the investigator's objectivity in the conduct of all investigations. Devotes an entire chapter to the characteristics of a good investigator. Uses actual cases to illustrate how investigators work — showing how painstaking investigations can be, how investigators' personal traits affect their work, how in some cases luck contributes to solutions, and how some cases are never solved. This book will appeal to those preparing to be or currently are federal investigators, law enforcement officials, corporate security officials, attorneys. ... Read more
