2-0 out of 5 stars Not Helpful.
I have to disagree with the first reviewer on this book. I have never been disappointed enough by a book to write a negative review - until now. I took the GRE a few months ago. I found the best study to be actual, past GRE exams. I honestly do not recall seeing a single word from this book or the other WordSmart book (which had a GRE Hit Parade) on the actual exam. I made notecards and put alot of time into learning these words and feel that it was not a valuable use of my time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
To all students who are studying for the GRE Exam- this book is highly recommended. It definitely helped me on the GRE. Of all the practice and actual tests I took, there were only 2 or three "wierd words" I counted that were NOT in this book. Buy it- it's a great investment! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
The Pimsleur Program is great. I took German in high school and in college for about 3 years, but I learned more from this CD course in just one month. I would recommend this to anyone wishing to learn the basics of a new language. I'm halfway through the Level III edition now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for math and analytical, as well as a few chuckles...
I bought this book based on the online reviews, and I have to say, the reviews are accurate. This book teaches you a lot about the tricks and traps of the GRE--some of which you can apply and some of which you won't see on the actual test. The math review is good and easy to understand. The analytical review helped me the most--just by practicng the logic games, you will learn a lot about how to do well on this section. The verbal review is okay, but it is better, I think, to start way ahead of time and learn as much vocabulary as possible. (It is extremely difficult to do well on the verbal section if you try to cram at the last minute--unless you have a superior vocab to begin with...) The best feature of this book is the fact that it is easy and interesting to read. As for my last word of GRE advice: take a snack or something to drink, because you will be so zonked by the time you have your break, you will need a little sustenance. Good luck!

4-0 out of 5 stars A thorough, yet concise prep tool - very helpful.
I purchased this book 2-3 weeks before taking the computer-based GRE. I went through all the material and took both practice exams. I found the book to be extremely useful in terms of the many tips for doing well, even though you may not have the material totally mastered. I am 40 years old, married, two kids, and work full-time. I needed something that could help me get it done quick. This book really proved to be well worth my time and money. I will say that I found the analytical and verbal sections on the actual test more difficult than the practice exams. Nevertheless, I scored just as well on the actual test as on the practices: V-580, Q-530, A-580, for an overall score of 1690. I needed a 1600 for the masters program I am applying to. I really think the strategies I learned from the book are what helped me, because there were several questions on the exam I felt clueless about. Thanks Suzee!

3-0 out of 5 stars Math was Good but the Verbal needed some Help
Although the intentions were good, the verbal portion of this book lacked a thorough definition section. The auhor tries to infuse vocabulary words throughout the text, and is succeessful in teaching those few random words, but the book lacks a much needed extensive vocabulary list. (If you have not taken the GRE yet, the verbal portion is littered with those hardly used fifteen lettered words like "pulchritudinous") As a person who has struggled with Math and excelled in the Verbal on standardized tests, I was shocked to learn that I scored better in Math than I did Verbal (A first for me!) On a positive note, the math sections were very helpful.

3-0 out of 5 stars OK so it's been 20+ years since I last took the GREs and ...
I found this helpful as an intro to how the test has changed since I last took it in the 80's. I would have rated it higher, but the math sections really are a bit too glossed over. I would recommend a separate book that focuses specifically on the math test. I had to go back to my old college math texts for explanations. However, all BUT the math parts are VERY WELL done with no BS and just enough levity to keep me from becoming lacrimose and lugubrious about my aging brain. (See, the book successfully taught me some fancy words.) Wish me luck!! And best of luck to you too! (My advice - don't wait 20+ years before going back to school.)

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated
This book was designed for people taking the GRE before October 2002. The GRE is now very different, and this book does not reflect the change in GRE format. The book is still geared towards students taking the paper based test. It doesn't provide any practical strategies for the computer bsaed test. Also, this book doesn't include any explanation of the new analytical writing section. I gave this book three stars because it does include a very helpful math review. However, if you are not strong in math, you will definately need a book with a more comprehensive math review. The verbal section is good, but you can also find good verbal tips in the Princeton Review and Kaplan books. Until this book is updated, it is probably better to choose an alternative book for your GRE prep. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best self-study book out there
As a teacher of ESL, I can wholeheartedly recommend the Murphy books as a grammar reference. The clear explanations and succint, usable exercises promote understanding and don't bog students down with less-than-useful detail. It works well for self-study and especially for homework exercises. Murphy might also be useful for the beginning teacher of ESL, who often is expected to teach grammar that he/she is unprepared to explain. Overall, the book does exactly what it sets out to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grammar in Use Intermadiate With answers.
I realy like to read this textbook. It will help me to know more new grammer from the English language.I would want to tell much thanks to the authors, for this nice textbook.I am so proud of you, thanks for everything which you write inside this book and to share to other people.I always want to study more new vocabulary and grammar too from the English, because I really liked to learn more. And it is good practise to know more new things from the English languadge too.I would want also to buy this book for me,because i need to use now here in the US.
God bless all of you!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best
This is the best English grammar textbook I know. It is very clear and concise. It is perfect to learn and useful as a reference book. The exercices are related to everyday life situations, which is very helpful. If you want to improve your English, I also recommend The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary. Good luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise, Clear, and Practical
Raymond Murphy's "Grammar in Use" series (Cambridge University Press) provides concise exercises, clear examples, a simple format, and a systematic approach to learning English grammar. It's almost ideal for self-study since each lesson (unit) can stand alone and unit answers can be easily found and understood.

Plus, the "Grammar in Use" books cost about half as much as the other "classsic" texts like Betty Azar's overrated and impractical "Fundamentals of English Grammar." Administrators and teachers, especially ones working with immigrants and refugees, should consider price and practicality when choosing texts.

Just compare "Grammar in Use" with Azar's "Fundamentals of English Grammar." Murphy's text uses 340 pages to explain esential grammar points while Azar takes almost 600 pages to overwhelm students with exceptions to rules. Murphy's book focuses on common expressions and everyday language; Azar's thick book offers the drill and kill approach to learning languages.

Granted, many ESL teachers have an almost religious faith in the Azar series. They can recycle their grammar lessons year after year. But the Azar series costs far too much, weighs too much, and contains far too many impractical exercises of limited practicality. ESL Teachers may find the Azar's grammar charts fascinating, but adult students will find Murphy's series helps them actually using English at work, school, home, and shopping. What is the goal, anyway?

Since immigrants and refugees don't need, want, or have the time to master these often silly grammar distinctions without a difference, I strongly recommend Cambridge University' "Grammar in Use" series. Don't busy adult students deserve an accessible, practical grammar text?

I don't usually like requiring grammar books for adult ESL classes. The desire to speak "correct" English can sometimes morph into a strange cult of some idealized English that one can't find spoken in American cities. Still, Murphy's clear exercises avoid this common pitfall by focusing on essential grammar points, using practical examples, and skipping over the peculiar oddities that mesmerize too many grammar fundamentalists. This affordable book lives up to its title and helps students learn English by using the language.

Finally, "Grammar In Use" stands out as the most student-friendly grammar series that I've seen in a decade of teaching English composition and ESL. Buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
So absolutely useful - not only tons of grammar stuff but good use of vocabulary in the examples. This, along with Murphy's Basic Grammar in Use, are great. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Bio E/M Reviewer, but with minor Limitations
I used the 2003-2004 edition when I was prepping for my own Bio E/M SAT. Overall, I was pretty pleased with what I got.

This is definitely a pretty solid 'workbook', runs through all of the nuts & bolts of everything from physiology to molecular bio. I had my bio teacher helping me prep back then, and it definitely worked better.

Sometimes, this book can get a little overwhelming with all the terms and functions to understand and memorize. A key example would probably be the parts on physiology. However, it does a pretty good job of breaking the material down to a summary in the end. Sure, I did get to read through the whole book, but it would not have been possible without anyone else nearby who I could have asked about confusions that may have arisen from this book.

I would have given this book 4.5 / 5. But considering that there's no 4.5, I'd have to settle for a 4. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars practice tests help
This book has a lot of useful information in it, but I think the practice tests are the most valuable part. The one thing that was not in the practice tests was an ample supply of questions about descriptive chemistry, which were frequent when I took the actual test. Make sure you study descriptive chemistry. Even though I scored 750, below what I had hoped for, it is still a good book.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better choices
Barron's has a history of making bad test-prep books, though unarguably, REA is worse. I took the SAT II Biology last year, received an 800, but it was most certainly not the Barron's book that helped. The Barron's book was completely off key in giving difficult enough information, and falsely boosted my confidence in entering the actual test, which was much more difficult than the questions in the Barron's book. In contrast, for the SAT II Chemistry, some of the questions seem unreasonably abstruse and irrelevant (just like REA), providing information that does not help you for the test. Princeton Review has too much of a relaxed tone and misses out on some information as well, and Kaplan also has some unnecessary stuff like (Delta G = -RT ln Keq, some extra electrochemistry stuff), and doesn't have the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation etc. Though a mix of Princeton Review, Kaplan, and Barron's ultimately works. You should definitely stay away from REA though--best to borrow these books from your local library than to buy them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Goes beyond the SAT II Chemistry and AP!!
This review book was really good. I only had like a week to prepare for the test so I turned to this book as a last resort. It is better than some of the AP Chem books. I wished I had this book for AP Chem. It is so helpful. It goes over the major topics in detail and most importantly, reviews the labs, which are really stressed on the SAT II Chemistry. It's true what my teacher told me. After you take an AP class, you will forget everything. I did pretty poorly on the SAT II Chemistry. My fault for procrastinating. I get my scores back tomorrow. Hope I got like a 700. ... Read more

Book Description

The shortest route to mastering verb conjugations

One of the greatest challenges in learning a language is mastering verb conjugations. The books in the unique Language Verb Drill series make it easier than ever for learners to meet that challenge.

Drilling, whether it's for learning a musical instrument, a sport, or a language, is an essential part of a sound education because repeated, concentrated practice makes specialized skills become second nature.

Unlike most verb books, which tend to concentrate on tables of conjugations, the books in the Language Verb Drills series allow students to focus exclusively on building mastery of verbs without being distracted by other elements of grammar. Combining the features of a workbook and reference manual, they clearly and systematically explain how a verb system works while providing numerous drills for practice. These revised editions of the popular study guides now include a final review section to reinforce the reader's ability to automatically select the correct verb form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Italian Learning Guide I Have Found Yet
I am currently living in Italy. I want to be able to speak with my Italian neighbors, so I bought this book. After just doing the exercises in the first chapter (only -ar verbs), I am able to converse with them better. My Italian neighbors (who speak no English) like the book so much that they asked me to buy one for them so they can learn English. The exercises are excellent. I do them on a separate piece of paper so I can do the exercises over and over again. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn Italian.

4-0 out of 5 stars repetition repetition
As anyone knows, the key to learning is repition. The book is straightforward. THere are no cute cartoons, etc. here. Just verbs and worksheets. I even do the work on notebook paper, so I can go back and do the sheets again. After just completing one page of drills, I have learned a lot. She only introduces one skill at a time, so it is not overwhelming. And the added benefit is learning, of course, the meaning of the verbs. I would even suggest this book for teachers of Italian because of the way the book is set up.

5-0 out of 5 stars great verb help
This book is great to use a few minutes a day. In no time you'll be much more aware of verb meaning and conjugation. I find verbs to now be one of my strong suits in the language. You can even do it in pencil, then erase it and start over (it's in workbook format). Combine it with a few other sources of Italian learning for the maximum effect.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grind Out Them Conjugations
I have found that there is no better way to learn a language than to write it out and that is what you do in this workbook.
This method will especially appeal to the visual learner. Read the rules and practice the execises. It's a lot like the old elementary school workbook/drill approach to learning but there's no kidding yourself. You either know it or you don't.
Three conjugations, fourteen tenses, four moods and numerous irregulars make Italian verbs a challenge to learn; however, the material is presented in a simple yet lucid format. There are some errors in the answer key which the more advanced student will easily notice. I am not sure if this book is intended for the absolute beginner; nevertheless, I highly recommend it for anyone at the basic or intermediate skill level and as quick review for the more advanced student. Don't forget your pencil and erasure. You will need them.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a bargain!
...[T]his book is a steal. It provides plenty of practice in Italian verbs and does an excellent job of preparing you for usage. The layout is straightforward and logical, and the verbs chosen are highly used and practical. The best way to learn a new language is through extensive practice and this is a fine workbook to increase one's opportunities to do so. I highly recommend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Verbum!
The Cassell's Latin-English Dictionary has a long history. First published in 1854, it has continued in publication under various editors and revisions to the present text, the work of D.P. Simpson, Head of the Classics Department at Eton during the middle of the twentieth century. This book remains for all but the most advanced scholars in Latin the principle Latin dictionary. Clerics, students and general readers of the classics use this volume more than any other. There are other editions (concise editions, etc.), but this is primary volume for standard use.

The dictionary has two sections, a Latin-English side, and an English-Latin side. The Latin-English side contains a primary vocabulary of classical Latin, most words used and found in writings between 200 BCE and 100 AD/CE. There are also proper nouns (names, places). Spelling was flexible in the ancient world; the spelling here follows the conventional modern spellings, with cross-references for significant variances. Words indicate definitions, declension or conjugation as appropriate, and some pronunciation guides. Latin authors are also indicated (in abbreviation) for almost every word.

The English-Latin side is primarily useful for prose composition into Latin of the classical type. Because of the natural growth of language due to progress of technology and ideas, many English words will not be found, as there are no Latin equivalents. Latin equivalent words are taken largely from Cicero, Caesar and Livy, with some additions from legal and ecclesiastical Latin.

There are additional sections for standard Latin abbreviations, the Roman calendar, bibliographies for word lists, atlases, general antiquities, and Latin language guides. This is the best choice for a Latin dictionary for almost any purpose. Even high-end scholars will want the Cassell's for ready and easy reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value for the Money II
Just to make a correction, the price for the Oxford Latin Dictionary edited by G.W. Glare is actually $274.00 not $150.00. My mistake.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best value for the money
I gave the Cassell's Latin Dictionary a rating of 4 stars instead of 5 only because I consider the Oxford Latin Dictionary to be the best Latin-English dictionary available. Since it costs something like $150.00 however, it's not likely to appeal to most students of Latin. Which is why the Cassell's Latin Dictionary is a better choice. It represents a nice compromise between something like the Bantam paperback Latin-English,English-Latin dictionary and OLD. For anyone who is thinking of seriously studying Latin (beyond a 1st year introductory course for example) this is a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best overall Latin dictionary....
Did you study Latin in high school or/and in college? Are you currently a Latin student at the high school or college level? If so, this is the perfect dictionary for you. All of the other Latin dictionaries are either too brief or just more than non-Latin-scholars need. (If you'd like a practical unabridged Latin dictionary, I strongly recommend "A Latin Dictionary" (Lewis and Short). I purchased the latter from Amazon and you should likewise be able to do so.)

Anyhow, this is a great reference for general and home use!

5-0 out of 5 stars By Far the Best
This is the only satisfactory "intermediate" Latin dictionary for the student who has just finished basic grammar and wants to read actual Latin authors. No other dictionary provides such a comprehensive overview of meanings at such an affordable price and attractive layout. Lewis' "Elementary Latin Dictionary" is by comparison twice as expensive and painful on the eyes. In addition, this Cassell Latin Dictionary has a more than adequate (although very brief) English to Latin dictionary for those who wish to compose in Latin themselves.

For any student who wants to appreciate the Latin language, and how it changed over time, Cassell is by far the best buy (short of purchasing the [more expensive]Oxford Latin Dictionary). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to say - and more
Of course, it has the obvious phrases regarding directions, hotel rooms, food, etc. It also has things you really need to say, but that aren't found in standard phrase books. For example, in the "Taxi" section, you can quickly find out how to tell the driver, "If you don't slow down, I will vomit!" There is just enough humor to keep you smiling without wasting your time, and succintly hepful comments throughout. This is the phrase book to get for your next trip to Italy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not useful
I love Rick Steves, but this book is too broken up into categories to use very well. We read all the great reviews on this prior to our trip and bought it - mistake. Any time we wanted to look up a word it wasn't in there (first example coming to mind, BLACK! - it was in the Italian to English, but you'd have to be translating that direction only). It's good for a laugh and has funny translations, like slow down the car or i will vomit, but realistically, will you really use that (OK, in Italy if not elsewhere, but it's not something you'd look up at that moment feeling that way). Impractical is the best description of this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to use, fun, and a great help
I used this phrasebook while in Florence in November 2003 and found it very easy to use and helpful. It even made me laugh: what other phrasebook would tell you how to say "I'm a pest" or how to talk with animals? I should add that I studied Italian over 40 years ago, so the language wasn't totally strange to me. The desk clerk at my hotel noticed the phrasebook and commented that it was very good. A street vendor told me I spoke pretty good Italian "for an American."

5-0 out of 5 stars The most helpful "little" Italian book
I purchased Rick Steve's Italian Phrase Book & Dictionary in preparation of my trip to Rome. Rick not only makes Italian easy, he makes it fun. This book spells out hundreds of everyday words and phrases, as well as the common phrases and words that will be used by a tourist. He gives helpful hints on how to speak with the locals and make the most of your experience. He also includes many words/phrases that many people would want to know how to say but would be embarrassed to ask someone to translate for them. His attention to detail is fantastic. Although this book will not teach you fluent Italian, it gives you a great foundational vocabulary to start you on your way. A must for anyone planning to travel to Italy! Buon viaggio!

5-0 out of 5 stars Most Useful and Entertaining!
A friend bought Rick Steves' Italian Phrase Book & Dictionary for me last summer before I embarked on my first trip abroad. My Italian speaking friend had actually lived in Italy for a few years, and after careful consideration, felt that this phrase book/guide would be useful for me. He was absolutely right.

The book proved to be invaluable. It was compact enough that I could carry it around with me in a small purse/backpack that I carried with me throughout my entire trip. I did not speak any Italian whatsoever, and found the words and phrases in the book to be exactly what I needed to get around and communicate effectively. I especially appreciated the pronunciation guide to each Italian word in the book- that was extremely helpful. The practical advice given throughout the book proved to be invaluable, as well as humorous, and the menu decoder was also of particular help. I quickly got over any "qualms" I may have had over appearing too "touristy" on my trip and used the phrase book repeatedly as it proved to be a most definate asset. Thank you Rick Steves' for so accurately predicting the needs of the average beginning traveler. The book greatly enhanced a most wonderful traveling experience. In fact, I am still studying it in anticipation of my next trip to Italy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
This book is pretty good. It has photocopiable games at the back that I use fairly often. My only complaint about this book is that it isn't organized in a way that lets me find specific activities for practicing specific grammar points. It's organized by type of game (i.e. picture games, word games, acting, etc.) But all in all, it's pretty good

4-0 out of 5 stars fun and fluency building for the language learner
"Keep Talking" contains over one hundred different fluency-building activities for the language teacher to use either directly, or with modification, in her language classroom. Each activity has a well defined purpose, whether it be functional or structural, and is categorized according to language level, skill and student arrangement, stating clearly whether or not preparation is necessary, and how long the tasks typically take. The procedural instructions are lucid and relatively easy to convey to most groups of language learners, and there is also scope for variation for many of these language games, along with helpful comments on how make such activities fun and achievable. If one also includes the importance of making notes, and obtaining feedback, which Kippel suggests in the introduction, then it is clear just how useful this book is. Although I was at first confused as to why the author grouped his language learning activities under themes such as jigsaw task, interview, or story telling, rather than according to function or structure, I think his point is to focus on fluency and engendering a communicative atmosphere, rather than to actually teach anything or practice something too specific. The teacher's role, therefore, appears to be as a facilitator or classroom manager. In any case, the indexes include language structure (but not function) and level, making navigating relatively straight-forward. "Keep Talking" also contains about sixty worksheets which can be copied for use in class. Although I no longer use them in my teaching situation, I borrow ideas from them all the time. This book is not suitable for formal institutions, but otherwise, whether you are new to language teaching, or a seasoned pro, I feel fairly confident that there is something in this book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars An ESL Teacher's Best Friend
As an ESL teacher in China for the past 12 years, I have found this book a great help and, at times, a life-saver. "Keep Talking" is one of the best sources of English language games and activities for the ESL classroom. Logically arranged and with clear instructions on how to use, lanaguage level, time needed and aim of the activity, this book is a must for all ESL teachers, but especially for those teaching for a year or two overseas without strong formal ESL training. You won't be disappointed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Help where I most needed it
This book is an excellent compilation of German Grammer. I have used it extensively in the three years I have been studying the language. Its compact and easy layout are wonderful when you need to find information on any sort of grammer snafu. I heartily recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only with it
Only with this book at hand, should you dare to study German. The ultimate reference guide, especially for those using textbooks for German classes that seem more concerned about German culture and glossy pages than thorough explanation of grammar. Forget if a preposition is dative or accusative ? ... EGG is here to help. Thank you Guy Stern and E.F> Bleiler.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very clear
I bought this book with little knowledge of the German language. It's very organized and well thought out. It is for the beginner with a limited amount of time. These 120 some pages contain EVERY BASIC thing you would need to learn about German grammar. I wouldnt recommend using this book alone. I use language tapes with this book. A downfall is it doesnt show how to pronounce the words. But otherwise, there is no other book for a beginner to use to grasp a basic understanding of the German language than "Essential German Grammar" --Peace Out

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference source
Clearly written, compact and concise. This book explains all the essentials of German grammar in easy to understand terms. This is a great refresher for those who already have learned some German.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best German grammar (in English) on the market!
This is a clearly written introduction to the complexities of German grammar. It takes the language apart bit by bit (or problem by problem) so that it never becomes threatening or overwhelming. The book is targeted at English speakers who have begun to learn German by a phrase approach or by listening to tapes, and have already mastered some basic phrases and vocabulary. It is an excellent supplement to self-study by tapes or books, or a refresher for those who learned some German in school years ago and are looking to brush up on their grammar. I am an American living in Germany and attempting to learn the language, and this is the best tool I've found for grammar. It was recommended to me by a friend studying at a German university (in German!) as the best on the market. My German tutor now uses it with her other American students as well. And it is even popular among my German friends who are polishing their English grammar! ... Read more

Book Description

This second edition is an extensive revision of the first edition of this successful text. Like the first edition, the second edition surveys the major approaches and methods in language teaching, such as grammar translation, audiolingualism, communicative language teaching, and the natural approach. The text examines each approach and method in terms of its theory of language and language learning, goals, syllabus, teaching activities, teacher and learner roles, materials, and classroom techniques. In addition to the approaches and methods covered in the first edition, this edition includes new chapters, such as whole language, multiple intelligences, neurolinguistic programming, competency-based language teaching, cooperative language learning, content-based instruction, task-based language teaching, and The Post-Methods Era. Teachers and teachers-in-training will discover that this second edition is a comprehensive survey and analysis of the major and minor teaching methods used around the world. The book seeks not only to clarify the assumptions behind these methods and their similarities and differences, but also to help teachers explore their own beliefs and practices in language teaching. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Useful Supplement
This is a well-organized, easy-to-understand tool for teachers and students that will serve as a helpful supplement to broad-based classroom instruction. (This evaluation of Azar's work is from the perspective of teaching EFL.)

For learning and teaching language, linguists now largely agree that "research has failed to crown any single method as superior." At the same time, researchers assert that a multi-entry program is best, one that uses as many different and varied means as possible. Therefore, if we assume that each method and tool used inside or outside the classroom for learning language is just one small piece of a large collage of methods, we will find that nearly every kind of material and method has its place.

To shrug off Azar's 'Basic English Grammar' by claiming that "It doesn't work" is to misunderstand its place in the classroom. For teaching conversation skills, it ought not in any way to be the bread and butter of a teacher's instruction; rather, interaction and dialogue that involve the five senses and (where appropriate) the whole body ought to have foremost priority. A heavy emphasis should be first placed on raw listening comprehension alone, afterwards on speaking; after that reading and finally writing. Once basic language skills have been developed in this way, teachers can introduce more formal instruction in grammar, using various exercises to practice new concepts.

And that is the place for a volume such as Azar's. The exercises are varied (from cloze passages to fill-in-the-blanks to identifying errors to oral conversation to open-ended essays and more), and the book is thick with page after page of exercises that are extensive and repetitive - exactly as language learning should be.

Because most of the exercises are written, in my case I do save this material for use only once or twice a week, or as supplementary homework for students to practice what they have already covered and practiced orally in class. In that case Azar is an excellent reinforcement for what students already know, and need be little more.

Teachers of introductory English will need to be aware that the vocabulary in the exercises may be broader than their students are presently familiar with. Also, those teaching in non-English-speaking countries should be aware that some aspects of American culture found in the exercises may be difficult for their students to understand, and therefore the instructor will need to make adjustments accordingly.

Overall, this is a helpful and enjoyable tool for training in good grammar skills.

1-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't work
Real language is acquired through comprehensible input (see books by Krashen). All this book will do is help you take grammar tests. It will not improve real spoken or written language.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic English Grammar
I have been using Betty Azar's book Basic English Grammar for many years. I find it a perfect supplementary text for other series books that focus on themes and the functional aspect of the language, but do not offer much in the way of drill practice. The fill in the blanks exercises are perfect for homework assignments, especially in the initial stages where practice with the form of the grammar structure needs to be mastered in order to create a foundation for freer expression. The writing assignments are well developed and provide students with a chance to apply on a more personal level the grammar structures they have learned. I also have found that the ORAL:BOOKS CLOSED activities have saved me hours of inventing cues on my own because they allow me to interact with the class as a whole and require that the students process the structures from listening, not the written word. If delivered in a manner that the students don't know who will be responding next, you can engage everyone in using the targeted structures to make a response, even though you call on only a selected number each time. Because drills are necessary, but can become repetitive, I further challenge the students to give their responses to their partners by asking them to "look into their partners eyes" when they respond, instead of speaking while they are reading off the page. I call this "thinking and speaking" because they must use their short term memory instead of their eyes. Hopefully this endeavor will help to move the structures that they are practicing into their long term memory, where it will be available to them outside the classroom. I am especially grateful for all the thought that has been put into the development of this beginning level book in the Azar series, as it has provided me with a strong foundation for teaching the basic structures of grammar. If it were more thematic, however, I would possibly not use it only as a supplementary text.

4-0 out of 5 stars Azar is better than anything else I've seen
I am using Azar's Basic English Grammar in my ESL instruction, and find it to be a solid text with plenty of useful examples and student drills and assignments. The subject matter is useful and practical, designed for the mature 'teen or adult. Azar also includes many "real-world" usages that give ESL students -- and even native speakers, in many cases -- lots of trouble. Rules are often presented in an arbitrary fashion, leaving clarification up to the instructor. I don't mind this, though. Azar provides the "what" and I provide the "how" and "why."

1-0 out of 5 stars It is totally useless.
No use to buy this book it just explains very briefly and doesnt teach anything ... Read more
