4-0 out of 5 stars A word of caution about these reviews
Be wary of these reviews, as not all of them are about thisbook. Amazon have made a mistake and the reviews shown here have beencombined with the ones for the book 'BMW 5 Series: Service Manual,1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988: 528e, 533i, 535i, 535is'. In the review from Canada, dated Oct 27 1998, Amazon state that it is from the 'Paperback edition'. In fact the book on the 1982-1988 cars concerns the E28 model 5 Series whereas the book on the 1989-1995 cars is about the E34 model 5 Series. They are completely separate books, not just different editions of the same book. END tr[17~

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK WILL SAVE YOU MAJOR BUCKS!!!!!
To make a long story short, I had 4 problems with my car, wouldn't start half the time, heater would only do maximum air push or nothing (no 1,2, or 3), back window got stuck half way, belt buckle cracked.
A supposed import specialist charged $68 just to tell me that the battery needs to be changed, and the heater's blower resistor had to be replaced. Oh and that it would cost $240 for the battery (part $100, labor $140!), resistor $370 (part $280, labor $90), belt $180 ($100 part, $80 labor).

Basically they were going to take me for a ride for a bill over $800!!! I finally set THAT IS IT! I stomached the $55 bill for a used copy of this book. AND after working on the car for a few hours a day for 3 days I REPAIRED EVERYTHING ALL BY MYSELF!

The parts purchased on my own (battery $105, resistor $22 from BMW itself (NOT $280 by a long shot!), and belt used for $60) came to only $180! I saved over $500 BUCKS in BS labor charges!!
This book paid for itself 10 fold within days of getting it! I better diagnosed my car with this book than that rip off import service station did with my $68!

The book does not really baby you, so you have to read it carefully and get a feel for your car yourself. But I tell you once you start fixing all these problems which are exaggerated by the standard con - mechanic for 1/4 the cost adn putting in the parts yourself, you can really get impowered.

I can tell you one thing I dont think I will ever use a mechanic again. Although I might call one after doing my next fix it job to see what a rip off they really are! HAHA

All I can say is get the book. If you want the repair done right you have to do it yourself. Ultimately it is cheaper, faster and easier. ( no BS waits for your car to come back, with a BS phone call stating the seriousness of the supposed malady! Your car still waiting in their shop with them hoping you can be suckered into fixing your car under their rip off conditions!)

I highly recommend the book. If you work through it and use it as you are fixing your car, you are definitely going to save big money!

The book is expensive BUT IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY TOO!

4-0 out of 5 stars 5 series manual for 7 series
i use the book for the e32 m60 built 1992 and find it the best book for the 7 series on the market.lots of hints even for the german owners, especially on the diagnostics, which is not available for the bmw s in germany.even dissmantling the m60 v8 which i never did before did not show any problems. a bit more on the electronocs in the car would be good, like the pdc system or the theft control and board computers

3-0 out of 5 stars E34 Service Manual
Pretty good with some repairs, but less than telling on others. Does not cover the M60 engine very well and it need more photos to accurately illustrate proceedures.

Erroneous info regarding the thermostat, gasket, and housing re-assembly.

No other manual is available so this is the best we have. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Classroom Textbook
This book is THE best textbook that any future Private Pilot can find. I have read many others and I find this one to be the best.

I'm a student pilot myself and this book as helped me enormously. The pictures are clearly drawn and emphasize the text. The book is filled with pictures and if you're a picture person (like me) you'll find this book easy to read.

Again, I highly recommend this book to any aspering pilot. We use this textbook here at Purdue University.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the industry's leading text for private pilots
This is such a significant upgrade from Jeppesen's previous edition. Clear, concise, and graphically superior to any other book on the market (and I have most of them). I am a commercial pilot working on my CFI and have found it even more useful the second time reading it. If you want to pass your checkride get a reliable, knowledgeable instructor and get one of these books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Preparation For Private Pilots and Students
I am a professional airline pilot, and log virtually all of my time in large, turbojet aircraft. I am also a current CFI, although I don't frequently exercise my Instructor privileges in single engine aircraft. Not long ago I was approached to assist in teaching a Private Pilot ground school and to do some tutoring on the side. I accepted more for the challenge than any other reason.

The selected text for the course was the "Private Pilot Manual" by Jeppesen Sanderson, and I must say that I was very impressed with the book. It is very complete and provides easy to comprehend explanations (normally with useful diagrams, charts, or photographs) that make learning relatively painless. It was an excellent refresher for me as well, as single engine VFR flying is not what I do on a daily basis anymore. I highly recommend this book to CFI's for their students, to any Private Pilot or Private Pilot candidate, or to any advanced pilot as a refresher of the basics.

The only complaints I have heard from students are in regard to the relatively high price of the book. My response is that this one book contains the best explanations of the most important concepts needed to pass your written, oral, and practical exams before becoming a Private Pilot, and is an excellent reference to be referred to in the days to come. Flying isn't cheap. Economy is a good thing, but you need to know when to skimp and when to spend. This book is an excellent investment.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best PPL textbook
I've had my hands on many textbooks on different subjects, but this is one of the best I've ever seen. The full color photos and illustrations are very well done and relevant. The PPL training content is thorough, but they also include little one page articles covering tidbits of aviation trivia and history that are entertaining.

It's the kind of book that you pick up to read a specific topic, but continue to read about other things that caught your eye along the way.

I think it's worth the price. You can probably resell it later, but if you pass the PPL checkride, you'll want to keep it as a reference.

4-0 out of 5 stars must have for the PPL student
This is an excellent textbook to have accompany you through studies for the private pilot certificate.

Everything is well explained and backed up with very good pictures and diagrams.

It isn't cheap, but then again neither is flying. However I can guarantee that if you purchase this then you'll understand that you made a good decision soon after opening it. ... Read more

When Chapman Piloting lands on your doorstep--all 656 pages ofit--it's easy to feel daunted. Have faith, sailor. Now in its 63rd edition,Charles Frederic Chapman's masterpiece is a boater's bible. Indeed, customer raves, "if you could take a class called Boating 101, thiswould be the textbook." It's more than just a basic text, however; it's acomplete curriculum of nautical knowledge, from knots to navigation, docking todistress calls, plus etiquette, protocol, and terminology for powerboaters andsailors alike. Accessible to the beginner, Chapman Piloting is anessential reference for even the most experienced sailor. A necessary componentof any nautical library. Highly recommended. --M. Stein ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A reference to all nautical books outhere.
This book teaches you the basics, and beyond on every nautical subject you can think of. It is used as a reference for other nautical books outhere. It's fully ilustrated with pictures, diagrams, and drawings. Many people think this book is the bible of boating. Safety, rules of navigation, docking, and navigation are thoroughly covered. Although you won't find specifics as to electrical or other specialized subjects, it does give you the basics, and priciples behind it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Leave Home (or the Dock) Without It!
Our most frequently asked question: "What's the one book you'd recommend for a boater?" Our answer every time: "Chapman's."

Whether you're a new boater just getting started or an old salt needing a little refresher, this is your dependable one-volume reference. When we need material for our "Boating/PWC Basics" course, this is where we go.

The book is continuously updated and fresh, with new information on topics like GPS and how to use it and Digital Selective Calling (DSC) for your marine radio. It continues to present essential and complete information on preparing to get underway, operating and navigating your boat, the practice of good seamanship, docking or mooring your boat, and how to put it away for the winter (which some of us have to do!).

Chapman's has been a fixture in our library (and on our boats) since the 50th edition in 1972. And even though we pay a little more for it now than the $8.95 price in 1972, you'll still find it a great value at Amazon's price shown above.

Our advice: Don't leave home (or the dock) without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bible of Boating, but maybe you just need a little prayer.
If you could only buy one book on boating, this would be it, but it's overkill for a beginning recreational boater. The newcomer to boating will get lost in all the detail if he tries to use this as a practical manual. With all the books on boating, it might be better to label this as an intermediate-advanced reference book. Sure, it's got everything, but most weekenders don't need to know everything, just the basics.

5-0 out of 5 stars an absolute boater's neccessity
Chapmans is the must-have for any boater who wants to do things the right way. I regularly go to this book. Easy to read, organized and practical. A bit big to bring onboard, however.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Cannot Recommend A More Important Book About Boating
I know the cost is high, but you cannot go without this book. Go and look at it in the library if you need to in order to be convinced, but save yourself the time and just buy it.

I was taught sailing at the old age of 19 by one of my 12 year-old YMCA campers. Since my first 5 minutes on the water I have been hooked.

Since then, I have sailed, raced, motored and flated thousand of miles on all types of boats and in all kinds of conditions. My advice, buy this book and read it. Then read it again.

It is not the kind of book you can sit down and read straight through. You need to have it handy so when you are wondering about something, you can get right to it and learn. Just try not to do it when you are wondering if you have the right of way... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Aerospace Engineering Reference
This excellent book is full of examples and equations to help students relate to the fundamental concepts in an introductory aerodynamics class.

The book is especially useful for reference, as it explains the derivations and many forms of complex equations such as the continuity equation. Furthermore, there are lots of examples of real-world design situations and historical backgrounds.

Overall, one of the best books I have used in my undergraduate aerospace engineering curriculum.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!
Great book for first and second semester aerodynamics. Especially the sections on supersonics and hypersonics. Links the technical and historical aspects of aerodynamics to give a very good global perspective of the subject. Anderson also provides "roadmaps" which tend to help the reader stay on track as to where the discussion is going. Those are especially helpful for technical books such as this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Aerodynamics
This book is one of the best written books I have. This book is well-organized, clearly written and easily understood. Each chapter contains a road map to keep the reader well aware of the proper flow of ideas and concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A start for every aeonautics/aerospace engineer student
This book with the the book "Computational Fuid Dynamiscs"of the same author, is a very strong tool for every student interested ion the field of aerodynamics and CFD. Very easy to read and understand, without any doub is the best book in the field that i have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for "Basical Publications" in Aero: Found one
This book covers all the aerodynamics a basic research engineer in aerodynamics would like to know. From non viscous to viscous and from subsonic to hypersonics. boundary layer and schockwave theories all included. Every part starts clearly with a nice outline the book will follow to come to the desired theorie. We use it for our doctorate program at Delft Aerospace, Delft University of Technology. ... Book Description

"This book will save you money and grief before you can say woven roving."--Sailing

"A comprehensive and accurate work that should benefit almost any owner of a fiberglass boat."--SAIL

"This book will prove a valuable addition to the library of any boat builder or owner who is seriously interested in doing his own repairs, as well as intercepting minor problems before they become major projects."--Boatbuilder

Are there hairline cracks in your boat's deck or topsides gelcoat? Have her color and luster faded over the years? Does she have deck leaks? Has she been holed? Is her hull oilcanning in a sea? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, this book is for you. This is the definitive guide for fiberglass boat repair and beautification, covering not just cosmetic dings and scratches, but also major repairs of structural damage to hull and decks. It will show you how to:

    • replace deteriorated gelcoat, or repair the flaws in an existing gelcoat and recoat it with polyurethane or marine alkyd enamel paint;
    • strengthen a weak and overly flexible hull or deck;
    • tab in loose hull liners and joinerwork;
    • make templates from the good side of a hull to reshape large shattered or missing areas on the other side;
    • repair or replace water-saturated deck cores;
    • repair keels, rudders, and centerboards;
    • rebed and refasten underwater and on-deck hardware;
    • rebed, refasten, and strengthen hull-to-deck joints;
    • fix broken hatches, and make new ones when necessary;
    • treat the symptoms and causes of overstressed hulls.

That beautiful craft swinging at anchor or nestled dockside, her topsides reflecting water and sky like a polished mirror, could be yours. Here's how. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I think there are better books out there . . .
This is a good book. It is complete, to be sure. For the expert fiberglass repair person, I cannot speak, but it is certainly difficult to read for an amateur. Generally, a bit much to swallow. I think that other books have similar information more elegantly stated. The fault is not with the content, but the presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Also Valuable When Buying A Used Boat!
Of the many boatbuilding and repair manuals I have seen, I would consider this to be the best reference for fiberglass boat repair. The pictures on the dust-jacket alone indicate that a serious treatise is contained within. It would appear that no matter how bad it looks, there is no problem beyond the scope of the competent fiberglass repairman. (Caution - some of the color photos of repairs-in-progress between pages 118 and 119 are not for the faint-hearted!)

Mr. Vaitses has been at this for a long time and with experience in the world of wooden boats (all boats have wood in them somewhere) as well as having been a player in the fiberglass revolution, is able to offer a well-rounded perspective. His honest, no-nonsense approach to problem-solving is refreshing.

Besides the obvious background info and how-to descriptions, this book can be an invaluable asset when examining a used boat. Mr. Vaitses is currently working as a marine surveyor (a person who inspects and evaluates the condition of boats for prospective buyers). All used boats need some kind of work and the challenge then becomes evaluating the nature and scope of needed repairs, e.g. distinguishing structural and safety issues from cosmetics and determining whether one can affect the repairs oneself vs. how much it will cost to have someone else do it.

Studying this book allows one to communicate more effectively with the surveyor and to describe problems more accurately to repair facilities in order to estimate projected costs. We recently completed the evaluation and purchase of a 1974 36-foot fiberglass cruiser. I can honestly say that the knowledge and confidence I gained from this book made the entire process a good bit less nerve-racking than it might have been! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not easy reading
I bought this book because I work with radar and would like to improve my understanding of it. This book is a good middle ground, but for a dummy like me, several chapters require re-reads. One of the most annoying things is that when the author describes related material, he doesn't compare and contrast as much as write one paragraph on the attributes of thing A and then another paragraph on thing B using all but two words that were used in the first paragraph. The reader must wade through this writing and then compare and contrast themself.
So, it's a good book and probably a great book if you have a better than average technical background, but it's not as easy as the first few pages (Amazon free preview) lead you to believe.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing book
This is a very good book. It is interesting to read although you are not an engineer in electrical or eletronics. Very informative. Recommended for all students who interested to study avionics.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good into book
Its a good introductory book. The illustrations are helpful. Its a good place to start for someone who does not have experience in signal processing or communications.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book for New Radar Systems Engrs Like Me
This book is a great reference for any radar related questions. I felt it was organized fairly well and especially geared for novices in the field like me. The illustrations aided me in understanding some of the tougher concepts and I especially enjoyed the historical sidebar descriptions that spanned the history of radar-equipped airplanes. For the next edition, I hope the authors expand their appendices to include more expansive summary set of equations and concepts as even a quicker reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A radar book for EVERYBODY!
Great Book! Generations of Radar Teachers at the Technical School of the German Airforce have been using this book as a source for information. 3-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Understanding of Cars
This book contains very basic material on the operation of the car; it appears to be a decent read for teenagers looking to grasp the basic; but the more mature readers will find this very shallow. The text contains the fundaments of auto mechanics; it is split into seven chapters; and each chapter describes a major automotive system. It has a test section at the end of each chapter to gauge how much you have learned. This book does not cover details on 2-stroke or 4-stroke engines; how the engine starts spinning after turning the ignition etc.

I must admit that it was enertaining reading this books with all the descriptive pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for the New Driver
If you or someone you know needs to learn the basics about cars, you need two books: How Cars Work and Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care. Both are great gifts for new drivers. I purchase How Cars Work and Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care for my nieces and nephews when they turn 16. Being an automobile technician, I think everyone that drives cars should know a little about them. How Cars Work does a great job using drawings to show car parts and what they do. Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care uses actual photos to show parts. Auto Upkeep also explains how to buy a car and choose automobile insurance. How Cars Work includes a worksheet for review at the end of each chapter, while Auto Upkeep: Basic Car Care has a CD with review activities and internet links.

5-0 out of 5 stars how cars work
I saw this book on my friends front room table and I was so impressed with the cover I had to open the book. Wow, what a book, I was overwhelmed by all the information pictures and words that I had heard but never understood. As I read through it, I knew I had to have it. I went out and bought three of them and gave one to my friends daughter who is 15 and eager to drive. I never had a book like this when I was growing -up and I think this is important info for anyone who doesn't know anything about cars. Terrific book! Buy it and you will see how helpful it could be for everyone in the family. Thanks for writing this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is useless
I was planning to perform all the maintenance work on my 2 cars, an Audi S4 and a Honda CR-V. I have done oil changes and air filter changes in the past but I wanted to do more. I bought this book and the "Auto Repairs for Dummies" book in addition to the specific service manuals for the 2 cars. This book gives very very brief explanations with big text fonts and big pictures (not much meat) of how things work so don't hope to perform any actual work by following the book. If you just want to know how cars work and don't wish to perform any actual work then this book may be is for you. I highly recommend the dummy book and forget about this book if you do plan to perform work on your car. The dummy book has a lot more details and it actually shows you how to do the work. I often turned to the dummy book when the service manuals are not explaining things in detail.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST CAR BASICS BOOK ON THE MARKET
I consider this book is a "must have" for anyone except perhaps auto technicians. I am a novice when it comes to car parts. I heard of or knew of (or I think I knew) terms like "Front Wheel Drive", "Rear Wheel Drive", and many other common car terms but I can't tell them when I check my car. But after only a few hours reading on this book, all these common car terms in my brain and their inner relateness begin to fall into their rightful places. THIS BOOK IS THAT GOOD.

What make this book stand out are :

    1. The authur strived for clarity while not skimp on details either. The writing is in clear, concise, to the point fashion that leaves no ambiguity but contains enough details to out-content many 300+ page auto books (It must be a fashion these days. I found many such thick books wasted much of their contents on third-rate humors /jokes I found annoying while wasted rest of their contents on ambiguous, not to the point technical writing. To those authors, I will say : PLEASE, either be a stand up comedian or a technical writer, but not BOTH. If you do both, you will fail at both).

    2. Detailed illustrations. Almost 50% of this book is devoted to detailed illustrations. Each page deals with a specific car part (be it crankshaft, fuel pump, timing chain, or else) - half of that page is technical writing, another half is detailed illustration. The illustration is not just for that specific part alone. It also illustrates other related parts in the same subsystem so you understand how the part works within the group that it belongs.

The book comes in 96 pages but in generous 8.5 inches x 11 inches size. That's how such detailed illustration is able to fit into half of page. Another thing I like is that the pages are made of high grade, pure-white (not tinted, or neutral colors) paper. Very few books these days are made from such good papers. ... Read more

The rule is, I found, that females can't write. I am staying away from what my own gender writes. Beryl Markham is a wonderful exception to my rule. Ernest Hemingway felt dwarfed by the authoress.
Beryl wrote in 1936, and Africa were she grew up was obviously different than now. She describes first hand encounters with lions and elephants, very interesting observations on animal behavior. She also describes the natives, and I wished she would have even gotten more into them. I love her philosophy on life and often I got the feeling she is writing right now, not 70 years ago. A great book for people curious about Africa! Put it into your collection, because you want to read it again!
Addendum April 30, 2004: After writing the above review I have learned from the biography "The Lives of Beryl Markham" by Errol Trzebinski that Beryl did not write "West with the Night", but her third husband Raoul Schumacher, a Hollywood ghostwriter.
Addendum June 15, 2004: I read "The Splendid Outcast" and in the Introduction, Mary S. Lovell, who wrote another biography on Beryl and knew her personally, does not doubt the authorship is genuine Beryl Markham.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Great American Novel - Only Its A True Story From Africa
Life and love, hardship and adventure, romance and history - all beautifully woven into a delightful autobiography of an unlikely heroine. The daughter of a poor white farmer trying to eke out a living in untamed and uncharted Africa, Beryl Markham rose from very humble beginnings to become a successful horse trainer, bush pilot, and the first person to fly east-to-west across the Atlantic from England. Her fantastic life seems to be one adventure after another, coincidentally commingled with the lives of Isak Dinesen (the author and heroine of "Out of Africa") and Denys Finch Hatton (played by Robert Redford in the movie, OOA). On this level alone, that of an adventure-packed historical tale, this book is compelling. But the absolute poetry of the narrative makes it inescapable.

Ms. Markham's inimitable flair for description and metaphor are enchantingly powerful. One could truly open the book to any random page and find a treasure. No previous knowledge of plot or precedence would be vital to the enjoyment. That such extraordinary prose also reveals an incredible life provides a rich dividend. Savor the following corsage randomly plucked from the bouquet:

"Arab Ruta... is of the tribe that observes with equal respect the soft voice and the hardened hand, the fullness of a flower, the quick finality of death. His is the laughter of a free man happy at his work, a strong man with lust for living. He is not black. His skin holds the sheen and warmth of used copper. His eyes are dark and wide-spaced, his nose is full-boned and capable of arrogance.

"He is arrogant now, swinging the propeller, laying his lean hands on the curved wood, feeling an exultant kinship in the coiled resistance to his thrust.

"He swings hard. A splutter, a strangled cough from the engine like the premature stirring of a sleep-slugged labourer. In the cockpit I push gently on the throttle, easing it forward, rousing the motor, feeding it, soothing it."

My first encounter with this charming book was accidental but fortuitous. I found the paperback in an airport bookstore, and stayed engrossed and enchanted by the lyrical meanderings for the entirety of my three-hour flight. A few years later I discovered the audio version which springs to an even greater life in the voice of Julie Harris. Her reading of the horse race that proved to be a watershed moment for Ms. Markham, still has the capacity to choke me to tears, though I have listened to it many times.

A few reviewers here have given less than laudatory reviews. This book is absolutely among the top five I have ever read, and I must pity those unfortunate souls who are tone-deaf to the rhapsodic music playing among its pages. Never mind my glowing endorsement. Never mind that Ernest Hemmingway said that Beryl Markham "has written so well, and marvelously well, that I was completely ashamed of myself as a writer." Just find this book and open it randomly to any page. You will quickly discover that this book is an extraordinary encounter. Don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Companion piece to Out of Africa. Should be read together
From the age of 4, Beryl Markham lived in East Africa and spent her childhood with native Maruni children as her only playmates. She was there during the same era as Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen), author of Out of Africa, and reading these two books together gives a lyrical, poetic, and heart-full-of-love picture of the Africa they both knew. But it wasn't only Africa they loved; they both shared a passion for the same men: Bror Blixen (Dinesen's husband) and Denys Finch-Hatton (Dinnesen's lover), so, inevitably their paths collided at times.
Although Dinesen is more well-known and respected as a writer compared to Markham, better known as an adventurer, Markham rises to heights of poetic imagery and her writing style was praised highly by many other writers of her era, including no less than Ernest Hemingway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Life, Well Told
I read this book when it first came out in the early 80s and have never forgotten it. I love Beryl Markham's language; and the story she has to tell is better than any fiction. She was an independent spirit, living an amazing life in an immense and beautiful land.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Special Book
I read this book on the recommendation of my husband, who had read it twice over the years, and various comments and adulations from others. I had not heard that there was controversy over the authorship of this magnificent work - but it would not have made any difference. It is a beautifully written book about a beautiful life. What more can one wish for? Whoever wrote this book had a style very little seen today. She writes with care and attention and humour, so that we can experience not only the mechanics of her exciting life, but also the self realisation she developed. The author makes me want to be alone so that I can share the silence of the soul and the environment that she describes so acutely. I have been enthusiastic with my recommendations of this work to my friends and I am sorry to read the rather sad "one star" reviews on this site. ... Read more

    Book Description

The ordeal of the whaleship Essex was an event as mythic in the nineteenth century as the sinking of the Titanic was in the twentieth. In 1819, the Essex left Nantucket for the South Pacific with twenty crew members aboard. In the middle of the South Pacific the ship was rammed and sunk by an angry sperm whale. The crew drifted for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and ultimately turning to drastic measures in the fight for survival. Nathaniel Philbrick uses little-known documents-including a long-lost account written by the ship's cabin boy-and penetrating details about whaling and the Nantucket community to reveal the chilling events surrounding this epic maritime disaster. An intense and mesmerizing read, In the Heart of the Sea is a monumental work of history forever placing the Essex tragedy in the American historical canon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Riveting account of little-known disaster
I would recommend without reservation this audio book abridgement of THE HEART OF THE SEA. Anyone who has an interest in suvival stories, or sea yarns would love this one. The tragedy of the Nantucket whaleship Essex was the inspiration for Herman Melville's MOBY DICK. The Essex was destroyed by a whale who, to the awe of the crew, seemed to have malignant intent. The crew was set adrift in the Pacific in small whaleboats with few provisions and little water---resulting in cannibalism and the drawing of lots ending in the death of one crew member.

The portraits of the Essex captain and first mate are particularly well drawn and distinctive for an abridged version, as well as the effects of starvation and dehydration. Unlike MOBY DICK, this abridgement gives just enough information on the whaling industry to be interesting, and focuses on the human dimension of the story. The listener has to wonder whether he or she could behave as well as these men did under equally desperate circumstances.

Edward Herrmann's reading of the book was excellent with one persistent mispronunciation of the name "Bowditch" being the one jarring note. I guess no one associated with the production had ever been sailing!

5-0 out of 5 stars a historian who can write...
In November 1820 the Nantucket whaleship Essex was attacked by an angry spermwhale, 1,500 miles off the coast of Peru. This is the true story that inspired Melville to write Moby Dick. After the Essex sank, the 20 crew members took to the open seas of the central Pacific in three whale boats. In the Heart of the Sea is a historian's account of the Nantucket whaling industry, the personalities of individuals, the destruction of the Essex and the three-month open-boat journey plagued by thirst, hunger, cannibalism, and bad management decisions. The book reads as smoothly as any novel yet is backed up by the authority of years of research by a historian specializing in Nanctucket Island (off the Cape Cod peninsula in Massachusetts).

1-0 out of 5 stars Sailing and Whaling Not
Given its aim to inform, not just to tell a good story (in the style of Moby Dick), the book has three fatal flaws: Philbrick's ignorance of both sailing and whaling, and his simplistic view of human psychology. Here are examples of some of the false assumptions Philbrick employs about sailing: in the 1820's a whale ship's captain would continue carrying a large, hard to reef, light-air sail with a storm approaching in the Gulf Stream while reefing other sails; an early 1800's whale ship will come back from a 90 degree knockdown; when caught over-canvassed in a storm, some captains prefer to come up head into the wind rather than falling off and running before the wind; first-time members of the crew remain "green" after months at sea; the ship's carpenter cannot build a whaleboat; the ship's carpenter can repair a whaleboat that was smashed to bits. Etc. These little mistakes about sailing go on and on. There are also numerous "little" mistakes made when describing whaling. The "killer" mistake occurs when Philbrick writes that in the 1820's so much whaling was occurring that the Pacific was dotted with the carcasses of dead whales. This, when even a brief amount of research reveals that one of the big problems faced by whalers was keeping a dead whale afloat. As these little errors mount up, the reader ceases to be able to take anything Philbrick says about either sailing or whaling seriously or, by analogy, anything he says about Nantucket, its history and its people. If the story were not presented as if to provide information about both this might not matter. But as it is, it does. Then there are the predictable one dimensional stereotypes that are Philbrick's cast of character's. Any adult who thinks this is a dose or reality probably cannot be convinced otherwise, though if you are in this group, I suggest comparing the character development in this "National Book Award" novel with, say, character development in Graham Greene's "A Burnt Out Case," for example.

IN THE HEART OF THE SEA by Nathaniel Philbrick tells the tragic and amazing story of the Essex, a Nantucket whaler that sank after being rammed by a mammoth sperm whale in the South Pacific in November of 1820.

If the story of the whale attack and loss of the ship weren't enough, the harrowing tale of how the crew attempted to make it back to New England through the open sea in nothing more than open whaleboats, while experiencing everything from shark attacks to cannibalism, has to be one of the most gripping and inspiring tales ever recorded.

Philbrick is masterful in his treatment of the story from start to finish. Drawing upon journals and writings of survivors--used in their day to inspire Herman Melville's masterpiece, Moby Dick--Philbrick offers a concise historical narrative.

5-0 out of 5 stars superb
I really can't say anything bad about this book. Fascinating story, flawlessly written, a page turner. Philbrick's own love of Nantucket and whaling shines through. ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars It's a keeper..
As a born-again motorcyclist (22 years ago I gave up the saddle when my daughter was born, after 8 years of self-taught riding), I read everything I could find about riding technique, style, and strategy. Including the Dummy books, superbike/ego books, brandname books, and a host of others. I re-discovered some old friends from Road Rider magazine, which had morphed into the consumer-oriented Motorcycle Consumer News. There I also discovered David Hough's "Proficient Motorcycling" column, which immediately appealed to me on several levels: he's an unassuming writer with understated yet direct style; his topics were relevant to all skill levels; and, he discussed the minutiae of riding with clarity, consistency, and conciseness. Everything I'd been looking for to re-educate myself on the now unfamiliar world of motorcycling. When I learned this book--a compilation of years of articles and updates--was pending, I immediately pre-ordered it. Yes, this time around I've signed up for the MSF course--but this is the book I'll keep for reference and review.

If you are a born-again, or just starting out on a motorcycle, this book will go far toward putting everything into a natural perspective. For the cost of about four issues of Motorcycle Consumer News, I have decade's worth of words that help me intimately understand exactly what I'm doing on two wheels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for a newbie rider like me.
Until recently, I've never had the desire to ride a motorcycle, mainly because I was afraid of becoming an organ donor. However, that suddenly changed a couple of months back, probably due to turning 37 and sitting through a marathon viewing session of "American Chopper" episodes. So, I began to shop around for a bike that would fit me, and at the same time I tapped into all the informational sources I could find about motorcycling (friends, the Web, etc.). "Proficient Motorcycling" was one of the first books I read, and I bought it based on the good reviews I saw on

It was my desire to arm myself with as much knowledge and hands-on riding skills as possible before swinging a leg over the motorcycle I finally settled upon (a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy). I signed up at a local Harley-Davidson dealer for a "Rider's Edge" class, and "Proficient Motorcycling" was an excellent supplement to the MSF course materials. Indeed, Mr. Hough recommends taking an MSF course, and frankly I can't imagine a novice trying to ride without formal instruction.

The techniques that Mr. Hough advocates in "Proficient Motorcycling" have made me a better AND safer rider. I feel more confident riding my new H-D, and therefore I'm able to enjoy my road-time that much more. I've already started reading the book's sequel "More Proficient Motorcycling: Mastering the Ride" to build upon what I've learned so far. If you want to be a good motorcyclist (and not a "donor-cyclist"), then by all means dive into "Proficient Motorcycling."

1-0 out of 5 stars Can't judge a book by its cover
Great glossy cover for a useless 60's-era manual. If aren't sure that rain jackets will keep you drier or that gravel may cause a wreck, then this is the book for you. Nothing about motorcycles, just the road conditions that one may encounter. Totally useless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding wealth of motorcycling knowledge
Outstanding wealth of motorcycling knowledge. Teaches you way more than the MSF class (but not a substitute for it). Pretty easy read and entertaining too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mind over Machine
Before I bought this book I had completed an MSF motrocycling course but the paperwork required to get my license took nearly 3 months. I lacked someone to ride with and was concerned about going out on my own. The book was a gamble on a tool that might refresh what I had previously learned and help me ease out onto the road

    The gamble paid off.

This book transfers a state of mind from the author to the reader. It forces you to take safety seriously and to focus on what you are doing when you are on a bike. Beyond the compelling (and sometime humorous) stories, the clearly described techniques for avoiding danger and the excellent graphics, this book teaches you how to think when riding a motorcycle.

The author creates scenarios you might encounter on the road and transports you to those places. He puts you on the bike, he explains what you should be paying attention too and what you should be preparing to do.

Its now been several months since I read the book and got back out on the road. I've put nearly 1000 miles on the bike and will commute to work in good weather. The lessons from the book resonate in my head every time I get on the bike. I have encountered many of the situations covered in the book (railroad tracks, deer, edge traps). Rather than being surprised, confused or panicked by these situations I knew what I was seeing, knew at least some of the options available to me and could plan and react in a cool and controlled fashion.

If your new to riding ( and probably if you ridden for years) this book is worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding summary of conceptual aircraft design
Mr. Raymer has managed to explain a very complicated process in a way that is both understandable and interesting. Conceptual aircraft design (i.e., starting with nothing but a set of performance criteria to be met) is a multi-variable problem in which the value of most of the variables depend on other variables. The solution of such problems require initial approximations with subsequent iterations. Mr. Raymer explains the conceptual design process, gives historic values used for first approximations and makes good use of actual examples. Two conceptual designs, one a homebuilt aerobatic aircraft and the other a supersonic fighter, are provided in the Appendix to illustrate the procedures described in the book. I found the book interesting both in subject matter and writing style. Although written as a college textbook, the use of actual aircraft to illustrate various points and the author's obvious desire to be precise about his descriptions makes the book easy to follow and fun to those interested in the subject. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointed
The books claim to address the M52 and M62 engines. Not a word about the subassemblies of either engine(the biggest part of an engine) The same information seems to be repeated in several places in the book. Gives the impression they are trying to make up volume. I believe the hype aboute the book is misleading since the publisher claims they strived for completeness. You cannot claim to cover an engine and then leave the largest part of it unattended. Price tag quite stiff with an ommision like that. E-mailed Bentley several times no response. In comparing this to the Bentley book on the E30 - It is a shame at the price. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars You'll need more than this book.
This book is frustrating because the learning consists of taking tests. There is not enough how to information. Also, the cd is supposed to randomly search the database and give a new test each time. However, after many practice tests I found that the cd did not access all the questions. Only because I also went through the written questions did I discover this. If you don't know this, you will not see all of the questions and you may need them all. On the plus side, the diagrams are what you will see in the real tests and the rules of the road are in the back of the book. I think it is very useful for drilling, not learning. This book should be considered a supplement. I recommend The Coast Guard License by Budd Gonder along with Chapman's and Dutton's for learning, and this book for practicing

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good But Be Advised:
I used this book and CD to prepare for an inland master's exam. The CD is very helpful and allows you to rapidly practice the exam and receive a score. Two major warnings:

    1) The "master and mate inland rules of the road" practice exam on the CD doesn't really test the USCG "inland only" questions. You have to set it up to do a "custom" exam and select inland only.

    2) All the navigation problems on the CD were just course - speed - time problems not involving a real chart. On the real exam the problems were specific to an actual chart as in "Starting from a point two miles due East of Ferndorf Light plot a course......". You are therefore probably going to need some other source of training on the navigation problems besides this book and CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't be tempted by the included CD
The software not only is simplistic, but also is unstable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start
No single text is going to allow you to ace the test, but this should be one of the ones you use. This is the second edition and supposedly updated as of 2000. While much of the information is available on the Coast Guard web site, Wing does a good job of "packaging it" to make it much more readable. I found the light and signal summaries worth the price of the book. Without these two summaries, memorization of the many, many lights and signals would be much harder. Another plus is a "plain english" version as well as the original rules - much more readable and easier to learn.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truth in advertising
From the intro: "The instructional text and illustrations provide an answer to an estimated 95% of the questions". Nonsense. Maybe 65%, in sketchy outline at that. But either you're just cramming answers to the questions, (which are available online for free) and can use the somewhat awkward CD or you are a serious student of the sea and will have or want a complete reference library to back this volume up.
So, it's a valuable book, but not as valuable as they say it is or as it could be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Top notch for any Disney World fan!!!
I've seen many Disney Trivia books over the years but only a few pages are ever dedicated to the most visited resort in the world. FINALLY a book that takes this entire resort and puts it into a light even us Disney fans have to take a step back from and say, "WOW I didn't know that"! I've visited Disney for years and surf the sites on a daily basis, yet I still found myself taken back by the information/material in this book. First you can you quiz yourself on what you THINK you know. I found some things I thought were fact were just actually well accepted rumors in Disney Web Circles, but this book cuts through those and gives you an in depth answer to each question without adding extensive writting that goes no where, it just gets right to the point. This brings me to my second point and I think most valuable point. This book is not just a question answer book. The answers are not just left as " B. EPCOT or A. 17" This book gives you the answer and provides short explaintions to why its that answer. The facts that come with the answers are great at giving you a behind the scenes look at the park while using the trivia to guide you through it. I can find myself taking more time reading the answers then the question just so I can read the facts that this book touches on. If you want to test yourself on Disney World Trivia and want to take that up a notch and learn more about the resort then you ever have, buy this book. The author has a Disney World Trivia site as well that gives you an idea of what this book contains and I'll tell you it delivers. Also while reading this you'll notice that he keeps the material on a level that we can all relate to and I believe this is due to the fact that he does take the time to converse with the average person interested in the Disney Topic or with people that would find this topic as a general interest. A definate buy even if its your first visit or your 100th (for me its my 30th)to Disney World. For those visiting Disney World for the first time, a great idea would be adding this to your guide book purchase. You'll find yourself standing in those long lines reading this book and being amazed at ever turn while having fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I have enjoyed reading "The Walt Disney World Trivia Book" over and over again. Excellent lay out, easy reading and lots of interesting information. I get to live Disney every day and find this book an excellent source of information. Two thumbs up for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Fun Guide For Seasoned And New WDW Visitors
Being avid WDW fans, visting there every 3 months from Ohio, my family will find this just-published book fun to take with us when we visit, and also at home. It will be of value to newcomers and also seasoned Disney fanatics like my family. In its 224 pages there's something of interest to every member of the family, young and mature. The multiple choice questions make it a fast, easy read, and make it easy to retain the answers. We're glad to add it to our large Disney book collection. Recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good information. Tedious format.
After receiving this book, I discovered that it was not exactly what I expected. I was hoping it would be a book on Disney World facts, trivia, and history (as the title declares). What I didn't know is that the book is written in question and answer format--with the answers to all the questions at the end of each chapter. This makes the book structure somewhat unwieldy. I would have preferred it to be broken down by attraction or park element and then have all the information presented in paragraph format. This would make the book much more readable than it is in its present form.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book
This is a wonderful book that tells a lot of facts and very intersting informatin about disney. Things that you probably wouldn't think of this book will tell you. This is a great book for all disney lovers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Best Friend on Trips
This is such a great book, I have to take the time to write!

Despite its size, my husband and I have been bringing our 1997 edition of this book with us on road trips since we bought it.It has guided us along about twenty pleasant drives in the West, steering us to the terrific things along the road that we would have just driven by if we hadn't known, and it has saved us from wasting time on the not-so-great sites, or things that we didn't care to see.As we travel between each special place, I read the descriptions out loud so we are ready for the great adventure that is sure to come.I am now buying a copy for my parents and I am really surprised at the great price!

1-0 out of 5 stars Without a single author on the cover
I tell my writing students to not read books written by editors.Probably a rehash of previous articles and internet finds in this most scenic drives series.Nothing new, nothing from a real author.Just another let's make a quick buck with a rehash book.I'm a writing teacher, author of one travel book that is a hole lot better and freelance writer so I know a lot about writing travel.Visit my site to take my travel writing class.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great planning tool
This was one of our best planning tools on our year long trip around the USA.Once we were on the road, we actually used it less.If you are planning shorter trips -- this is a great tool. If you are thinking of a looonnnggg road trip - this helps gets your ideas flowing - then also see "Live Your Road Trip Dream" to help with all the planning details. Get moving from the dreaming to the doing in no time at all!

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring for Family Trips
This is a fun book for vacationing families, college student roadtrippers, RV campers, and motorcycle travelers.

As an Illinois resident, I was pleased to see 18 stops the authors considered scenic. Having traveled through many of them, I can attest their taste is good. Seeing the majestic Shawnee National Forest is like seeing what Adam and Even might have enjoyed had Eden been located in southern Illinois.

With all of the 120 drives, there are roughly 10-20 stops, each with a descriptive paragraph. Decorating each drive are photos of special sites or animals. Maps with insets demonstrate the context of the drive inside each state.

Not every great site has a stop. Illinois' gorgeous Starved Rock Park is missing, but only because so much of America is beautiful. To include every place of beauty would cause this 400 page book to be 40,000 pages.

While it makes a nice coffee table book, there is plenty to read. It can help inspire deeper research for your next family adventure.

I fully recommend "The Most Scenic Drives in America (Most Scenic Drives in America): 120 Spectacular Road Trips" by Readers Digest. It is as enjoyable to read as it is to look at.

1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely HORRIBLE manual
    ******One-star is NOT LOW ENOUGH*******

Received book as Christmas gift couple years ago. I have a 1998 Explorer, and I continue to be frustrated by this sorry excuse for a manual.....erroneous info, and complete lack of depth. As I found out late last night, something as simple as documenting a fuse-box is complete garbage.

I've also owned Haynes manuals, and seem to have had better luck with them.

I can't imagine anyone who would be pleased with this manual, unless you require instructions on how to top up the wiper fluid.

2-0 out of 5 stars 1991-99 Ford Explorer Repair Manual
In section 6 the information for the windshield wiper motor is not applicable to my 1996 explorer. Also, there is no information about how to remove / replace the windshield washer spray nozzles. Or how to remove the cowling along the base of the windshield.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chilton's has lost touch with reality.
I purchased this book for needed factual, accurate information of which I got neither. I wanted to replace the lower ball joints on my '99 Ranger, so I bought this book. Take note: on page 8-4 it states specifically that the 1998-99 Ranger does NOT have coil springs. This of course is hogwash as my '99 most definitely has coil springs. In addition, it states on page 8-8 that the ball joint is an integral part of the lower control arm. This, too, is complete hogwash. Please be advised that this book is RIFE with erroneous information - including any pictures contained therein. I have lost all faith in Chilton's ability to present the correct information on ANY automobile.

1-0 out of 5 stars Computer Module? This book only lists ONE!
There are several computer modules on my ford explorer. I bought this book to list them, and guess what, It lists just one. And its detailed instructions on how to access that module was "remove dash to expose computer module" and no diagrams. I dont know about you, but behind MY dash is a Buttload of stuff behind my dash, and not only that, but my dash comes apart in sections, so just what section I wonder?

Useless! Breaks it covers fairly well, good thing that the explorer, ranger, and mountaineer all use the same breaking system(cough cough)cause it lists just one way.

Good thing the electronic diagrams are the same for all the vehicle types(cough cough) for all listed vehicles from 1991 to 1999 as it onlyu lists one vehicle schematic, otherwise Id be lost.

Good thing there was a mechanic within calling distance to put back together everything I ripped out per the chiltons book, otherwise Id be walking.......

5-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough
I liked this book because I was tired of taking my Explorer to the shop. I was also very curious as to what made my Explorer tick, since there are so many computer modules inside. I reccomend this book to anyone who wants to repair their own Ford and save a bundle. ... Read more
