Everyone should red this before going into the wilderness!
This guide is indispensible, not filled with the "man is always in the wrong" agenda, but rather documented with real stats and factual details. This book will let you know what to do in just about any scenario in which a bear attacks you. Also try Shelton's "Bear Attacks: The Dealy Truth" which goes into WHY bears attack people.

Try Shelton's "Bear Attacks: The Deadly Truth.," which goes into more detail as to WHY bears attack.

Working With Gary Shelton
I have read both of Garys's Books AND I have taken both the class roon and rifle range instruction. I have had the classroom Instruction twice , unfortunatly the range instruction is no longer available. Both of his books form the basis of his lectures. It is now compulsory training with the forestry, WCB, BC Gass and Fisheries and Oceans.His books should be concidered TEXT BOOKS. Well written easy to understand and without ANY embelishments of the facts and occurences. As presented it is the true story of the present conditions of bear behavior . For those of us who have worked in bear country and used Gary's books as a study, the knowledge immparted becomes next to instinctive when an encounter happens. Having had hundreds of encounters while counting Spawning salomn in wild rivers, I have been able to avoid any serious agressive confrontations. There have been encounters where it was necesssary to take a defencive posture. Mr. Shelton's two books are, or should be manditory reading for any person tho uses " bear country" for recreation or work. Informative and helpful
I found this book to be informative. Bear baiting & trapping is not a new or recent phenomenon. It times past many citizens felt it was an honorable calling. Who among the ranks of the outdoorsmen has not heard the stricken cry of the woeful preservationist? According to these people, all our country has left is seven cougars, two whales, one woodepecker, twenty-seven bobcats, nineteen deer, eleven foxes and a partridge in a pear tree. Just dont be so rude to ask how these figures were determined. Great content and down to earth lingo.

Good Book
This book was very helpful and I'm not suprised that the last person to comment is from the "Land down under with no guns" it 's liberal garbage like yours that caused the problems you know face.

Are you kidding me????
What a joke this book is..... I had to read it just to see what it entailed. If you are involved in wildlife management, then this is a great book for you to assist with catching problem bears. However, if you are a "hunter" then you shouldn't need this book. Baiting a bear or using dogs to track one down to tree it is not hunting. I am by no means against hunting, but you should have to stalk your own game ..... none of this ordering up a bear with honey and meat to bring him into your sights. That is downright cowardly. Do yourself a favor if you are thinking about this book for a hunting trip ..... start an exercise program and trek your own. Good luck! ... Read more

A cultural history and almanac of the bear
Grizzly Almanac (143-4... provides a cultural history and almanac of the bear, covering everything from hunting regulations and changing environments to bear encounters with humans. An excellent guide to the grizzly.

Plagued by dubious cliches
Fine writing, but the facts are suspect. As an example, the chapter on bear attacks gives the usual spin that the odds of being killed in a car accident on your way to Yellowstone Park are greater than the odds of being killed by a grizzly in Yellowstone. Yeah, there's not much chance of encountering a grizzly in the vast parking lot at Old Faithful, but if you look at the rate of injuries from bears to hikers in Yellowstone's backcountry, it's readily apparent that people hiking in the backcountry are at far greater risk than people driving through the park in their Winnebago.

I give this book 3 stars only because the author is very sincere and trys to give a balanced presentation. In terms of accuracy and relevant facts, the Grizzly Almanac gets 1 star.

Busch has done it again!

A Lumbering Book on a Lumbering Bear
Murie's book (originally a scientific monograph) on Ursus horribilis, the great brown bear, is a 242-page collection of observations of the grizzly's actions and relationships with its habitat. Murie's first-hand observations date from 1922 to the 1960s and were made around Denali (the original native name of Mount McKinley).

Murie's observations are dispassionate and objective, seemingly free of any bias for or against the great bear (although, at the conclusion, his admiration for the beast and his passionate desire that mankind refrain from "managing" wildlife do emerge). His observations include such topics as bears' range and movement, mating, mother-cub interaction, food habits, and relationship with various types of potential prey such as caribou, moose, Dall sheep, squirrels, marmots and mice.

As mentioned, Murie's observations deal only with the grizzlies of interior Alaska around McKinley National Park. He occasionally refers to but does not report on the brown bears of the Alaskan southern coastal areas, although he does accept them as a variety of grizzly (some feel that they are different species or sub-species).

Before buying this book, the reader should understand that it is not a "story book" about bears. There is no connected "story line" throughout the book, nor is it a collection of harrowing tales about grizzly attacks on hapless humans. Readers looking for entertainment or excitement should seek elsewhere. However, the book is quite illuminating as to the normal habits of normal grizzlies in their normal environment, and readers who wish to understand the actions (and, dare I say, the thought processes) of these animals will find the book a realistic, down-to-earth resource.It does not propose any encompassing scientific theories or postulate new hypotheses about grizzlies; it merely reports on how they act, where they roam, and how they live. In the end, this fairly long series of observations is quite effective in painting a very realistic and useful picture of both the grizzlies and, to a lesser extent, of the animals upon which they prey or with which they coexist.

There are a few somewhat grainy, black and white photographs reproduced in the book, indicative of the photographic technology available to Murie. Somehow, though, their quality adds to the overall impression of the book as the product of a keen observer of wildlife half a century and more ago. In brief, I found the book interesting and informative, if not exactly a "page-turner," and it should be useful to those who would become naturalists, who are curious about grizzlies, or who, like me, will always feel somewhat entranced by Alaska, the Last Frontier, and its still-wild creatures.
