5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully presented photos and drawings
The DK series of eyewitness books are all fabulous, but this has to be my favorite. Dinosaurs are always appealing to children and adults and this book is no disappointment. Superb studio-quality, well lit photographs give you close-up shots of teeth and bones so real, you'll feel like they're right there for you to touch and pick up.

Theories on how dinosaurs really looked on the outside and how they walked are explored. Every caption has a tidbit of information that is interesting to anyone who reads it. A book like this will keep a child of any reading age occupied for no less than an hour on a road trip... and it will constantly be read over and over again... it's just intriguing and beautifully presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DINOsaur book...
I appreciate this book because it gives you drawings and paintings of how prehistoric creatures lived millions of years ago. It gives a perfect understanding of the study and also art of Paleontology. This book is, in my opinion, 1 of 2 of my most favorite books ever published for the scientific review of more than just a few species...This concludes my review. ... Read more

Book Description

Introduction by Dr. Paul Sereno.

Imagine a crocodile almost as long as Tyrannosaurus rex and just as fierce! That’s SuperCroc, the giant Sarcosuchus fossil discovered by Paul Sereno, a National Geographic explorer-in-residence.

Crocodiles and their ancestors are some of the most successful animals that ever lived. At the time of T. rex, crocs ranged in size from 2 feet to over 40 feet long. They lived on land, in swamps, and in the sea. Some, like SuperCroc, were fierce predators. Some were heavily armoredplant eaters. And when all of the dinosaurs (except birds) became extinct, the crocs lived on, becoming the crocodiles, alligators, and gharials of today.

Combining fantastic art and photography with vivid descriptions, Chris Sloan draws young readers into the latest discoveries about the lives of these amazing animals.

This book has beautiful pictures! My 2 year old son loves trains and what boy doesn't love dinos? The perfect combo. My boy can read the book to me without missing a beat! I have had to tape pages back in in the paperback book we have because we have read it so many times! A favorite in our house!

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite
My 2 year old son loves this book! We borrowed it one day from the library and I have to get one of his own, because he doesn't want to give the library book back. It is a little short for bedtime reading, so I read it twice and he loves it. (...) I would recommend this book very highly to other parents.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cute but not a favorite
This is a cute book but rather short. Doesn't make the cut for our nightly bedtime reading. Once in a great while my 5 year old will choose to sit down with it but definitely not one of his favorites.

"Thursday was a day much like any other for Jesse. Trains and dinosaurs. Dinosaurs and trains. Just before bed, Jesse drew one last picture. Suddenly there was a loud noise and the whole house began to shake..." Hop aboard! From the dining car, to the sky window, to the tunnel up ahead and more, join Jesse and his prehistoric friends for the ride of a lifetime on the dinosaur train..... John Steven Gurney really captures the essence of young dinosaur and train lovers in this endearing little picture book. His simple text is kept to a minimum, as he lets his vibrant and evocative artwork tell the story. Each dazzling two-page spread engages, and is filled with bold color, playful details, and marvelous facial expressions, that will captivate little ones, and send imaginations soaring. Perfect for preschoolers, Dinosaur Train is a read-aloud crowd pleaser, and is sure to become an instant favorite at your house.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia
The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia written by David Burnie and illustrated by John Sibbick is a wonderful text with plenty of well captured illustrations along with the text to captivate your imagination about what dinosaurs were like. This text vividly captures you as it attempts to recreate the lives of the different dinosaurs covered in this encyclopedia.

"The Kingfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia" is arranged in a chronological order giving copious attention to dinosaur habits and habitats. Also, there is attention to detail about information on how fossil finds can be interpreted as the information is related to the time of the dinosaurs. The writing is easily understandable and children will wonder at the pictutres along with the prose.

I found this book to be up-to-date on a lot of information and is and outstanding guide to dinosaur life and times. There is some comparative anatomy, as the book goes into detail about the Maximum Length, Time, and Fossil finds as to location as to where these animals were found. This makes the book interesting as we see contrast to different types of dinosaurs as to location on the map. Also, the interrealtion of species to one another.

"The Kinfisher Illustrated Dinosaur Encyclopedia" is a book that can be used as a reference as well when comparing different dinosaurs to one another. The contents of this book is as follows:

Life in the Distant Past
The Age of Ancient Life
The Age of Reptiles
Plant-Eating Giants
Ornithopods
The Meat Eaters
Giant Meat Eaters
Armored Dinosaurs
Reptiles in the Air
Reptiles in the Sea
The Age of Mammals

There are subcatigories in each of these major chapters and there is adequate detail making for and interesting read. Dinosaurs are a significant part of prehistory. The more we discover about dinosaurs, the more we find out about the world we live in today.

This book rates a solid five stars for imaginative illustration and a text that is easily understood giving the reader a well-rounded view of life's past. You will not be disappointed with this book as it is unbelievably rewarding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A refreshingly unique presentation of the alphabet
My son already liked alphabet books when I selected this one for his second birthday. We didn't need yet another alphabet book, but this one has become his favorite.
At 2 years and 3 months, he can recite the entire thing. It has a few "big" words like "nutritious", "quenching", and "irresistible", which is great for beginning speakers. It is a stretch for my son to pronounce those words, but that's where the learning is, and he's proud of himself.
As we talk about the bats, balls, boats, bananas, blueberries (and much more), he broadens his vocabulary, fine-tunes his pronunciation, and registers the concept of the "b" sound. He acts out this book by taking our plastic letters, quoting each page, ("A was appetizing"), and pretends to gobble the letter as the T-Rex does. The T-Rex puts the letter "R" in the refrigerator, so my son finds his "R" and wants to put it in the refrigerator too.
It is a colorful, visually appealing book, for toddlers through kindergarteners. My older son likes to help point out the items (that begin with the designated letter) on each page for his little brother. Some are obvious; some more challenging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and educational, too!
The educational content of this book is disguised by colorfulillustrations and witty passages. With each new letter comes theopportunity to name many objects that begin with that letter--C has clown, cotton candy, a carousel. And the letter that is being presented is always in bold type in every word in that particular passage. A wonderful tool to teach a little one their letters in both capital and lower case form. I chose this book because my son loves dinosaurs. However, I feel this book is wonderful for any child. So enjoyable! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Unequalled achievement
This audio version is a masterpiece and is destined to become a classic of audio drama along with Welles' "War of the Worlds" and the plays of Norman Corwin. ZBS has outdone itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary tales of whimsy for youthful readers.
I first read this book at a young age when I was still fascinated with the world of dinosaurs. Gotten over the addiction by now, being almost out of highschool, I still look back on my memories with this book, and its sister book: "The World Beneath", with great fondness. The illustrations, no less that artistry, are high above the par of your average children's picture book. And, they are only outdone by the spellbinding story; brought to life with the loving detail that could only be conjured by a true dinosaur fan. This book would be a welcome addition to any child's wish list and makes for a lasting impression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, interesting read
Although this book is considered a children's book, or something for young teens, I believe it's enjoyable for people of all ages. The artwork is gorgeous and the detail Gurney puts into creating his world is amazing. The book is written in the form of a journal, written mostly by Arthur Denison, but with a few entries written by his son, Will. Because Arthur is a scientist, Gurney can believably put in a great deal of detailed information about the world of Dinotopia. I loved reading this book and I especially loved looking at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for the Entire Family!
Years ago my husband received this book as a birthday gift and loved it. The collection grew to include the three true Gurney texts (Dinotopia, The Land Beneath, First Flight).

Over the past year we started reading them with our five-year-old daughter who has fallen in love with the beautiful illustrations, the mythical world and engaging characters. After reading them numerous times, they have been favorite bedtime reading, we purchased the two novels by Alan Dean Forrester. They continue the same Denison era plot lines with the same familiar characters and a few new ones. At first some of the vocabulary was hard for her to understand but I have to say that we made it through both books and we all enjoyed them. I have to disagree with those who felt the vocabulary in the Forrester texts was too difficult. I do have to admit that I had to consult webster's twice...but that's how we learn and I'm happy to give this example to my five-year-old emergent reader. Fun books, well written which send you imagination wondering....great for all ages!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most impossible dream comes true for a dinosaur fan!
This is the most beautiful and realistic book ever to be painted of a fabulous land where dinosaurs and people who are NOT cavepeople truly love each other and peacefully live together. In fact, this is quite different from Jurassic Park - here, dinosaurs treat you with a great respect and even speak to you in your own language! The details of everyday life in the lovely Dinotopia are quite eye-filling and breathtaking, ranging from a wooden puppet serving as a foster mother to new hatchlings to the simply stunning ariel views of those glorious castles proudly standing upon very craggy mountains as you fly by on a pterosaurus-shaped hang-guider! A hardcore dinosaur lover would just swoon at those wonderful sights no matter how old he or she is! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is holding up well with continued use
My daughters (now 3 and 2) received this book about 6 months ago. They love Barney so the book was an instant hit.

They love the fact that they can lift the flaps as I read them the story - makes for a really fun and exciting reading session (no matter how many times I've read it to them). They also enjoy looking through it themselves and love lifting all the flaps.

I can't tell you how many times this book has been read in the last 6 months but it's been ALOT. The flaps have held up well with the constant use and none look anywhere near ripping - this book is good quality.

As they are learning their ABC's and 123's this book has continued to hold their interest.

Recommended if you love Barney, love "flap books, or just want an interesting and fun way to learn your ABC's and 123's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, sturdy, colorful
Our toddler loves lift-the-flap books but often, through repetition or curiosity, tears the flaps off; however, the flaps on this book are thick and sturdy, and have withstood many viewings with no tears. The heavy laminate pages clean up easily.

The book is colorful and has a LOT of flaps: the first two-page scene features the first ten numbers; the second has the 26 letters of the alphabet; the third shows a farm scene with nine colors featured; the fourth is a busy circus, with flaps for eight shapes; the fifth is a beach scene and the flaps depict seven pairs of opposites; and the sixth shows a fairy tale scene that incorporates eleven flaps hiding characters from the show (Stella, Baby Bop) and fairy tale characters (Humpty Dumpty, Mother Goose).

A good value, entertaining and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barney's Abc, 123 and More, an absolute hit!
This book was a hit on Christmas! My 15 month old son would not let it go once he opened it. The book is a nice size (big) and has a lot of fun flaps to open so he can learn his abc's and more. 5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book
I loved this book because they had a lot of fun and had a lot of
details and it was very interest and funny to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A delightful fantasy rewrite of pre-history
In "What Happened to Patrick's Dinosaurs" the author takes us on a pleasant romp through the imagination of a dinosaur lover. Patrick tells his brother Hank of the times when Dinosaurs did all the work for their beloved humans, making them cars, roads, and houses. Although his brother Hank tries to correct and question Patrick, Patrick has an answer for everything, logical and intreguing.

The illustrations in the book are a delight as well. From cloud formations and star contellations in the shape of dinasaurs, to pictures of dinosaurs wearing clown make-up to put on a show. ... Read more

"Can you fathom a time when almost no one in the world knew what adinosaur looked like?" Barbara Kerley and Brian Selznick can--and it was a timewhen people used words like "fathom" a lot, about 150 years ago. Thisauthor-illustrator team became experts on the subject, delving deeply into thelife of Victorian artist Waterhouse Hawkins, the first person to ever summon up,sketch, mold, and fabricate these ancient giants into full-size models.

The Dinosaurs of Waterhouse Hawkins, presented in breathlessly earnestchapbook style ("A True Dinosaur Story in Three Ages"), follows the life ofHawkins from his early fossil studies to the first iguanodon that heextrapolates into existence for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The story thenfollows his subsequent victories and defeats at home and abroad: a triumphantlyunorthodox New Year's Eve dinner party with the fathers of paleontology; theunveiling of Dinosaur Island; Boss Tweed's scuttling of a planned PaleozoicMuseum in Central Park, and the destruction of years of Hawkins's work in theprocess.

And the story is all true, although this veracity does make the pacing a bitclunky in spots. Then again, Kerley and Selznick have researched their hero withmeticulous care (check out the copious endnotes), so perhaps only Hawkinshimself can be blamed for leading a life that didn't always progress in perfectdramatic form. Overshadowing the narrative, though, are Selznick's stately, ghostly illustrations--of towering megalosaurs and Hawkins shuffling about withcane and top hat--which more than make up the difference. 5-0 out of 5 stars very informative
I am a student at West Virginia State College University. I am in Mr. Samples, Children's Literature class. I chose to read this book as an honor book for a caldecott winner. I am not a huge dinosaur fan, but I loved this book. It made it even more fabulous that it is all based on a true story. The pictures were just as great as the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars You can still see the dinosaurs in person!
We were acquainted with the Crystal Palace Park dinosaurs from the Walking with Dinosaurs Discovery Channel special (my son watched it dozens of times), so this book piqued our interest immediately. The history of the man behind the models was fascinating, and is told in such a way as to keep even very young readers interested. The marvelous illustrations also keep little eyes riveted. When we traveled to England this year, we made a point of going to the Crystal Palace Park and seeing the dinosaurs first hand. You cannot get as close to the dinosaurs as I expected, but it was still very exciting to see these historic models. We impressed the park guides with our knowledge that was gained from this childrens book. I heartily recommend this book for dinosaur or history lovers, and I recommend a trip to Crystal Palace Park if you are ever in London.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Biography
There are very few biographies out there for young children that capture their interest. My 8 year old daughter chose this book for her biography book report, was entranced by it and by the subject -- Bejamin Waterhouse Hawkins.
Surprisingly I was also intigued by the book, found the illustrations magnificent and the story "stranger than fiction". Kudos!

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous
I purchased this as a gift for my four year old Grandson and found myself fasinated with the book. The story, although true, was new to me. I was entranced with not only the narrative but also the great and colorful art work. This is a book for all ages and I predict it will become a classic for those of us who marvel at the number of and various sizes of the different dinosaurs. A perfect gift for that Dinosaur-loving Child in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dinosaur Delight and Much, Much More.....
"Can you fathom a time when almost no one in the world knew what a dinosaur looked like?" Well, back in the mid-eighteen hundreds, that was just the case. Archeologists and paleontologists had found dinosaur fossils and bits and pieces of their skeletons, but no one had actually drawn or created a model of what one might have really looked like. Enter Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins. He had always had a passion for drawing and sculpting animals, and now as an adult, realized his dream project, commissioned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, of building life sized dinosaur statues for all the world to see..... Take a little biography and science, add some mystery, history, humor and suspense, and you have the makings of one intriguing and captivating story. Barbara Kerley and Brian Selznick take us from England to America and back with this thrilling and unique story about this special man of vision. Ms Kerley's detailed text is exciting, thoughtful, and inspiring, and beautifully complemented by Mr Selznick's dazzling and intricate illustrations. Together word and art create a vivid and lasting picture of a man who followed his dream through both triumph and disaster. Fascinating end notes are as entertaining as the story, enhance and augment learning and should open the door to interesting lessons and discussions. Perfect for youngsters 8-12, The Dinosaurs Of Waterhouse Hawkins is a treasure to be savored and enjoyed each and every time it's read. ... Read more
