It seems that kids are programmed to love dinosaurs. Is the appeal thatthese wild-looking reptiles seem imaginary, like dragons and unicorns, but they are (well, were) actually real? Whatever the source ofthe extinct creature's mysterious magnetism, this pop-up,touch-and-feel, lift-the-flap dino-centric version of Scholastic's "MyFirst Jumbo Book..." series (My First Jumbo Book of Colors, My First Jumbo Book ofShapes, etc.) will only encourage young dinophiles.

The sturdy, colorful, cartoonish book has only five double-page spreadstotal, but four of the spreads illustrate and identify six-to-sevendifferent kinds of dinosaurs. Children can feel the bumpy scales of thebarapasaurus (pronunciation guide included beneath each name), lure theornitholestes out of its ferny hiding place, ease the maiasaura from itsegg, or force the coelophysis to engage in some mildly aerobic exercise. On the last spread, in the shadow of a looming pop-up T-rex, kids arechallenged to identify five dinosaurs from their skeletons and lift theflaps for the answers. Parents and educators seeking a meatierintroduction to dinosaurs might want to look to DK's A Big Book of Dinosaurs: AFirst Book for Young Children, as this interactive novelty bookhas no descriptive text at all. 5-0 out of 5 stars A lovely, quietly charming book about fatherhood
You could hardly do better than to get "The Little Green Goose" for any father, whether adoptive or biological. Adele Sansone's text is a miracle of economy, covering parenthood, adoption, geneaology, and more with a minimum of fuss and text.

The barnyard goose decides that he wants to be a father, but as he has no wife or other partner, he decides to adopt a spooky looking green egg found by the dog at the edge of a field. The goose settles himself on top of the eggs and waits and waits. When the egg finally cracks open, what emerges is some sort of lizard or dinosaur or who knows what--but it definitely is not a goose. Still, Sansone's goose dad utterly ignores the differences between himself and his new son and makes a natural (and skillful) parent. When the "green goose" decides to try to figure out what his real background is, he has little luck and ends up coming home to the goose--who, after all, is the only parent he's ever known.

The illustrations, by Alan Mark, are utterly charming. The "green goose" is splotched and splashed with color, while the goose is drawn sparingly and convincingly. This is, overall, a fun tale with subtle and valuable life lessons.

5-0 out of 5 stars a story of adoption that did not forget the story!
Wonderful book covering so many subjects in a short entertaining time. Father goose longs for a child, and adopts a very strange egg. After the little green goose is born, the baby chicks tease saying thats not really your mommy, you dont look anything alike. The little green goose goes around trying to find out who he looks like and then becomes lonely and returns home, realizing home is where you are loved. Great book for adoptive fathers. Also for those involved in transracial adoption. The story illustrates a fathers love and caring, the idea that families do not need to look alike, and all this is done with a tale that is good for its own sake. The illustrations are superb, my favorite is the final one, this great big green dinosaur-like creature (the little green goose) with the father goose laying on top of his head, one wing stretched out protectively over his child and both fast asleep. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars beautifully presented photos and drawings
The DK series of eyewitness books are all fabulous, but this has to be my favorite. Dinosaurs are always appealing to children and adults and this book is no disappointment. Superb studio-quality, well lit photographs give you close-up shots of teeth and bones so real, you'll feel like they're right there for you to touch and pick up.

Theories on how dinosaurs really looked on the outside and how they walked are explored. Every caption has a tidbit of information that is interesting to anyone who reads it. A book like this will keep a child of any reading age occupied for no less than an hour on a road trip... and it will constantly be read over and over again... it's just intriguing and beautifully presented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great DINOsaur book...
I appreciate this book because it gives you drawings and paintings of how prehistoric creatures lived millions of years ago. It gives a perfect understanding of the study and also art of Paleontology. This book is, in my opinion, 1 of 2 of my most favorite books ever published for the scientific review of more than just a few species...This concludes my review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW! Best pop-up book I have ever seen, hands down.
This book puts all other pop-up books to shame. The colors are magnificent and the pop-ups are detailed and exciting. My 2-year-old is on his 2nd one because he loved this book when he was 15 months old and got a little too excited and ripped off some heads and tails. The story is cute and we love to make up our own stories. Buy this book - new or used, you will never regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well designed (and clever) pop-up book
When I was little, pop-up books were simple, and had only one moving element per page. They were exciting, of course, but still, it seemed like more could be going on.

Fast-forward to 2002. My son got his first pop-up book, Dinosaur Stomp!, and wow, these books have undergone some changes from my childhood. The dinosaurs in this book literally leap out at you from the page. And you no longer have to do anything -- you just open each page and the pop-up action happens automatically.

When we first received this book, we were worried that it might make our son nervous. After all, he was only 17 months old at the time. What would he think of large 3-dimensional creatures baring their teeth at him from a book?

Well, we shouldn't have worried. Our son laughs as we read him the rhymes on each page, and he has already picked out a couple of dinosaurs that he enjoys seeing the most. He grabs my arm for one of the pictures (a big fat dino with really large teeth), but even then, he doesn't seem upset. Just excited.

The artwork is beautiful. Each of the dinosaurs is rendering in beautiful bright greens, yellows, purples, etc, making every page an eye-catching work of art. And the creation of each pop-up must be a talent unto itself. The creatures look like they shouldn't fit in the book, yet when you close it, they snap right back in.

Unfortunately, the book has the same problem that I remember when I was younger -- once you damage a pop-up, it's hard to get it to work correctly again. There is one page in our book that only has dinosaur bodies on it. All the heads have been ripped out. We've fixed this page numerous times, but each time, our son finds a way to rip it up again. I don't know of a really good way to avoid this, so if you have a child who likes to tear things up, take this into consideration.

So, do I recommend this book? Definitely! It's visually appealing, has great pop-up action, clever rhymes, and our son seems to love it! What more can you ask for?

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves this book, and I enjoy it too
Daughter got it for her 2nd birthday as a gift, and she could hardly put it down. The pop-up images are very cute, and she loves listing the colors and talking about what each dinosaur is doing. The verse is short but fun to read. This is definitely one or our most favorite books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Dinosaur Stomp
The pop-ups in this book are awesome! Quite detailed and intricately designed. My son (18 months) just loves this book. The story to go with it however, could use a little work. It's very brief!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun, easy reading
This book is ideal for the parents who have children that have shorter attention spans. It is fun, colorful and short. The easy to remember text is great for preschoolers who enjoy retellling the story to younger siblings, parents or other relatives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding family favorite!
This is the favorite book in my 4 year-old's library. It's a perfect combination for a child who is into dinosaurs and monsters, loves poetry, has a great sense of humor, and likes telling us which words rhyme. His step-dad, a 40-something jazz/blues/rock fan, enjoys the rhythm and the chance to "get down" with the silly rhymes. I like the hilarious illustrations, and especially appreciate the fact that doing the dinosaur stomp, shouting "boom-a-laka..." down the hallway, is an easy way to get my reluctant child into the bathroom to brush his teeth before bed

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for young dinosaur lovers!
Rhyme and rhythm tell the story and beautiful illustrations compliment the text! This book is a favorite of my three-year-old son, and also was his favorite birthday present. We read it through at least 3 times each night before bed! Janice Hart

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Rhythm and Rhyme
I love reading this book to my almost three son, and he loves hearing it. We checked it out at the library, but this is one I am going to have to add to our bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocking
My almost-4-year-old loved this so much we used it as the theme for his 4th birthday.

5-0 out of 5 stars FUN
This book is a blast to read aloud to a child. My four year old daughter loves this book, and is now reading it aloud to me. The story is based on a group of dinosaurs going to a party. And what a party it is. They dance and create an earthquake. The illustrations are as good as the story,an uptempo good-time book. If you know a child fond of dinosaurs, this should be the first dino-story you buy. Trust me, I've read and heard this story over one hundred times, and each time is as much fun as the first. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who Dung It? Getting the Real Scoop
My wife had a hard job convincing the courier man that he had just delivered dino dung to Dannemora - Dannemora being the name of our district. But deliver he did!

The publishers of Random House Children's books have just sent me an advance copy of Dino Dung - the Scoop on Fossil Feces.

This is a new book by Dr Karen Chin and Thom Holmes with illustrations by Karen Carr and another in the Step into Reading series recommended for Grades 2-4.

From the case of the Weird White Blobs to the Telltale Tyrannosaur, this book is a real Who `Dung' It?

Dr Chin is a world renowned authority on the fecal remains of dinosaurs and her partnership with the highly regarded author of children's books, Thom Holmes, has produced a fascinating insight into the science of coprolites.

There are a lot of interesting facts and observations packed into the forty eight pages of this Junior Reader: the role of bacteria in converting dino dung into these trace fossils, how to spot a true coprolite and learning that the size of the pile doesn't necessarily equate to the size of the depositor.

As with other books in this series, the pictures in this gem are clear and concise, even when illustrating difficult subjects such as the cut-away sections of ground or sections observed under a microscope.

Readers will also enjoyed the subtle humour in the headers such as "The Scat with Nine Lives"

The publishers are on to another winner with this book and we will be recommending it to children everywhere - and no doubt a few adults!

5-0 out of 5 stars For young and old dino lovers!
I have a 5 and 7 year old. We all think this book is great! It's colorful and informative and Up-To-Date! One feature I enjoy pointing out to my kids is the little images which compare the dinosaurs size to a human child's size. That way we get an even better idea how big the creatures were.

5-0 out of 5 stars High interest and educational quality alike
Promising high interest and educational quality alike is this dinosaur 'field guide' for all ages, which packs in museum-quality dinosaur illustrations, expertise by two paleontologist authors, and details on dinosaur digs and places to see fossils in the field. Web sites, museums, and bibliographies are also included in this highly visual, appealing guide.

This is a great book, its got the most info on dino discoveries after about '95, plus interesting facts on previously known about dinos. Its also a very interesting and fun book to read, and is very educational. It has a cool fold out poster too, wich makes it even more fun. I strongly reccemend this book to any one of any age who like dinosaurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Dinosaur books up to date!
This is an awesome book for dino enthusiast and/or kids who want to be paleontologists. It has information on 87 diffirent dinosaurs and also information on some non-dinosaurs. The illustrations, done by Robert Walters, are amazingly beautiful and colorful! Another great thing about this book is that it has new information about dinosaurs; like birds are now classified as a type of dinosaur and new discoveries like Nqwebasaurus. It's a great book for new dino fans aswell.

5-0 out of 5 stars My son's favorite
My 2 year old son loves this book! We borrowed it one day from the library and I have to get one of his own, because he doesn't want to give the library book back. It is a little short for bedtime reading, so I read it twice and he loves it. (...) I would recommend this book very highly to other parents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Truth about Dinosaurs for Kids

1-0 out of 5 stars Highly biased
Sorry, but as a paleontologist, I really hate to see religious philosophy thinly veiled as "science."

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Children
I think its a shame that this book is being touted as a book for children. Especially given the supposed Christian theme. Telling a child that if they, or anyone sins God's punishment is death is really counter productive to what Christianity is all about. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

Dinosaurs of Darkness opens a doorway to a fascinating former world which existed in Australia more than 100 million years ago--when it was a polar region joined to Antarctica and plunged into darkness much of the year. The way we have come to know about this lost world--so different from any that exists on Earth today--makes for a fascinating story. The authors, who played crucial roles in this discovery, describe their efforts to collect the fossils indispensable to our knowledge of this realm and the laboratory work that unlocked their secrets. Dinosaurs of Darkness is an intriguing personal account of the way scientific research is actually conducted and how hard it is to mine the knowledge of this remarkable life of the past. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed verdict
One really has to give two reviews for this book. As a chronicle of fieldwork, it rates a 4. These folks had to face some of the most difficult excavating imaginable - tunneling through hard rock often being pounded by surf!

Unfortunately, they give us very little on their thoughts about the lives of the dinosaurs they found other than that their star hypsilophodont probably had unusually acute vision, and fail in that respect where "Digging Dinosaurs" and "Dinosaurs of the Flaming Cliffs" succeed so wonderfully. One gets the impression that they rushed this book out before fully completing their research, which is a shame because this could have been a very good book indeed if there had been a bit more about the dinosaurs themselves. For fans of dino behavior this really is only a 2. ... Read more

In speaking of that first supplement-"superb...the scope in phenomenal"-ARBA referred to the basic volume as "a reference legend...lavishly illustrated, cleverly written, and extraordinarily comprehensive." This continuation of what is now the standard encyclopedia provides up-to-date concepts and evidence of dinosaur paleobiology and evolution. Various competing positions are well presented and exhaustively referenced. The content is based on the latest original research of paleontologists, especially in dinosaur systematics, and genera, and covers such topics as the constant changes in technology and research methods, the Mesozoic Era in general, new theoretical ideas, the dinosaur-bird debate, dinosaur extinctions, and nomen nudum and excluded genera. ... Field Mouse leads a quiet, contented life in his burrow under an old bone. But one day he starts hearing strange scritching noises outside. Peering out, he sees people with shovels and picks digging gently in a nearby bluff. What's going on? Field Mouse scurries out to explore. Later, when he returns to his cozy home, he finds that his bone is gone! This intrepid little fellow sets out on a mission to reclaim his roof. His search leads him to a strange place called The Field Museum of Chicago, where, lonely and frightened, he scampers around, evading vacuum cleaners and scientists, and always seeking his beloved bone. Finally, one day, Field Mouse comes across the biggest Tyrannosaurus rex in the world, 67 million years old--and his bone! The determined homebody settles right in to his new quarters--right under the T-rex's toes!

A clever idea with a somewhat dull presentation, this story will certainly inspire flights of fancy and interest in the ever fascinating great dinosaurs. Based on the true story of the largest, most complete T-rex ever found, this version is given a fanciful treatment and original point of view by award-winning author Jan Wahl. Bob Doucet's illustrations utilize compelling perspectives, but are somewhat lackluster. Wahl has written more than 100 books for children, including The Singing Geese. (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Field Mouse and the Dinosaur Named Sue is 'Dino'mite!
While this is a fictional account of Sue, the story gives children a broad look at what's involved in putting together a dinosaur for a museum display. From the dig, to carefully cleaning the bones, and putting them together on display at the museum - all from a mouse's eyes. This is a delightful children's book for all ages! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A good laugh!
This is one of the most hilarious books I have read in a long time. I cannot fathom teaching this to a child. Even more so I cannot believe an adult would want a child of theirs to be taught such outrageous nonsense. The only thing this book is good for is a good laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars a real attention getter for kids with questions
The Bible and Dinosaurs is an excellent tool to help kids broaden their thoughts about science and the origin of the earth. It encourages them to challenge what is taught as the proven truth, and to search the Bible forreal evidence and truth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent - what the Bible says about Dinos (dragons)
This book is an excellent book for children ages 7 or 8-12 and gives us the Biblical perspective on what the Bible says about dinosaurs and the age of the earth - much younger than what they will hear in most schools. There are also pictures and full color and black and white drawings for thechildren to look at while you are reading to them. The book explains thatmost of the fossils of the world occurred in the world-wide flood of Noah'stime, and that Noah took dinosaurs on the ark (baby or juvenile ones of thelarge types). The book shows scientific evidence that man and dinosaurlived together at the same time: footprints found together in the samelayer, cave drawings by Indians of dinosaurs, eyewitness accounts offishermen and sailors who have seen dinosaur-like swimming creatures in theocean in this century, including an occurence in World War I.Ourattention is also pointed to the fascinating Biblical descriptions ofbehemoth and leviathan. It also gives accounts of the natives in the Congoof Africa who have seen an animal they call the "mokele mbembe." When these natives are shown pictures of a brontosaurus-like (diplodocus)creature, they become excited and say, "mokele-mbembe!"They donot do this for pictures or drawings of other animals, like the elephant orthe hippo. A good way to get kids started - "There was no death untilAdam sinned."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent book
I find it to be extremely fascinating. The ideas that are raised in this book are logical and supported.A Child can understand it but even a Biology professorcould gain from reading it.I would highly recommend it to anyone with acurious child, or a curios mind of their own.

3-0 out of 5 stars worthless debate?
I have not read this book, and i don't intend to, but i have seen a webpage that is like it.does anyone seriously think one side will listen to the other enough to write a whole book on it?my god.anyway, i give it a 5 because that's in the middle.I also seriously doubt that it's a "children's book&quot ...
