5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful!!
I read this book to my son's first grade class and became the most popular "mom reader" around. For a group of mostly city kids who don't generally think about squishing around in the muck on purpose, this sweet, smart story opened the children's minds to the wonder and beauty of nature, and gave us all some gross (and cool!) things to ponder. The author did a wonderful job of telling a simple yet poignant story about growing up, learning from the world around us, and sharing our love and knowledge with family and friends. The illustrations are equally amazing. And the kids and I loved learning all the names of the different types of dragonflies at the end. This book makes me want to be the kind of mom who isn't afraid of anything gross!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and illustrated!
I can't say enough good things about this book. The story is compelling and well written. The information is factually correct and presented at just the right level for precocious preschoolers and young school-age children. And the art is absolutely stunning. I wish there were more children's books like this on the market--books that are able to combine good storytelling with interesting and accurate information. This is the stuff that makes kids want to read learn. I'm going to buy it for the library at my daughters' school and for everyone I know with a child between the ages of 4 and 8.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent
Magnificent! This book makes you want to get out, muck around in a pond, ask questions about the wonder of life and go "wow?" The story of a little girl that follows the transformation of a nymph into a dragonfly is not only a metaphor for her own growing up, but it is a wonderful demonstration of the natural curiosity we need to cultivate in children. Eliza learns about dragonflies, nymphs and the importance of asking questions. Philosopher Abraham Heschel wrote that "under the running sea of our theories and scientific explanations lies the aboriginal abyss of radical amazement." Author Susie Caldwell Rinehart found a way of keeping that amazement alive and making it accessible to children. The illustrations in the book are works of art. There is hardly any white space in the book as page after page come alive with color. I liked the additional information, list of further readings, and web sources at the end of the book for curious little explorers. A great book. Every child should have an "Aunt Doris" who responds with a "magnificent!" to the creatures that make most of us go "eeeww." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for learning to I.D. a few basic Dinos!
My 2 year old LOVES this book!!! We "tone down" the fact that some Dinosaurs eat others, but she loves the realistic pictures, loves hearing the names, and learned to identify and pronounce all the Dinosaurs in this book the second day we had it... this book is fantastic! The ONLY drawback is that now our daughter wants more books just like this, and we've not been able to find anything else quite like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for kids
I was a big fan of the Eyewitness books when I was a kid, and so I decided to buy this for my Dino loving cousin. He loved it. Just like all the other Eyewitness books it was filled with big interesting pictures, and was understandable for all ages and reading levels. I recomend this to anyone searching for an informational dinosaur book to give to the little ones. Worth every cent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great reference tool
This is a detailed and interesting book about dinosaursfor kids. It's very up-to-date. It has dinosaurs we've never heard of before. Who knew that there was a dinosaur for every letter of the alphabet? Now we know! In the starting of the book there are very informative sections such as How Are Dinosaurs Discovered?, How are they named?, How are they grouped?, and what is a dinosaur!

The book was very easy for children to use.Lots of kids are interested in learning more about dinosaurs and this is a great tool for them

This book would be helpful to elementary students when writing reports on Dinosaurs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informational
I know it's geared towards older kids, but we purchased this book for our then 3-year-old, who LOVES dinosaurs (Walking with Dinosaurs is one of his favorite programs). After a year and a half he stills asks me to read it to him. He loves the pictures, and enjoys learning the different facts. No matter how many times we read it, he still finds questions to ask. We chose it because it actually has the correct pronunciation for each dinosaur featured (something many other books didn't have). I would certainly recommend it to any dinosaur lover, regardless of age. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scott definitely has been a busy writer!
I have worked with scott before he became famous and know that he is a brilliant writer. I hope Scott reads this because I have been trying to get back in touch with him to no avail! Scott, if you are reading it's Steve Shepard here and I'm back in Sarasota and want to get back in touch with you. drop me a line. my e-mail is tranquil_union@yahoo.com

I'v e been to the bookstores and have seen a lot of your books and find the characters to be believable and empathetic. Young people seem to really enjoy your style and ability to create surprise, mystery and excite, all the while weaving very grounded principles and morals to the stories.

Great Work!!!!!!

Steven.

5-0 out of 5 stars Return to the Dinoverse
In this third installment in the Dinoverse series, the time machine that caused all the chaos in the first two books flares to life once again, bringing three new teenagers and a teacher back to the time of the dinosaurs. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and highly recommend them. These books show young readers the value of friendship, as each teen must put aside their personal problems to help one another, so they can all return to the present day safely. The teens also begin to see their teacher as a trusted friend rather than just another adult authority figure. These books would be great for boys who may not be interested in reading; they contain a lot of adventure and excitement. These books also present good values associated with friendship and "fitting in" with a peer group as a teen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a good overall book
This book overall was a good book for any favorite Fanticy lover.
this book is about a young manwho is a mail diliver in the land of Dionotopia. He dilivers mail on the back of a skybax. A sky bax is a dinasaur. it can fly long distancsis.
The young man goes on a joueney to find his feonca. Along ther way he meets up with carnavorious dinasaurs, grumpy hermits, and some nomadic tribes of humans and dinosaurs.
I recomend this book to those who can read well. their is some chalanging gramer and some going frome one person to another.
For the most part the book really held my attention. i didn't want to put teh book down. i kept telling telling my self just one more chapter, but i ended up reading 3 more chapters.

You would love to read this book if you are a science fiction kind of person. It couldn't really happen but it is cool to think it could. If you have read any of the other Dinotopia books, you will love this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was an AMAZING book!
I loved this book! the writing was descriptive and this book was written in great detail. I can't wait to read the others!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alan Dean Foster adds marvelously to the world of Dinotopia
It was a great book and I have only one complaint: I really, really wish it had a map at the beginning showing all of Dinotopia and including all the place names mentioned in the story. I loved the story itself though and Alan Dean Foster's unique ability to describe fictional settings and peopleis what makes this book great. An awesome addition to the world ofDinotopia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good story line
"The Hand Of Dinotopia" has a good story line, but I did not care too much for the writing style; it was a bit too dry. The story is about two young humans, and a dinosaur, who go questing for somethingcalled the Hand of Dinotopia that supposedly points the way to a safe searoute in and out of Dinotopia, which is surrounded by deadly currents andreefs that can smash boats to pieces. The trio soon find something amazingin the middle of 'The Great Desert,' which is unexplored and unknown to allbut a very few dinotopians. Before too long the group becomes larger as thehumans and dinosaurs continue their quest in search of the Hand ofDinotopia, but the question is: do they find what they're looking for . ..? An entertaining book, good story line, and rather suspenseful, providinga mystery to curious and willing readers. ... Read more

Marrying the latest in science and dazzling, custom-designed full-color art with the irresistible die-cut Fandex format, Dinosaurs is the perfect addition to the series that now has over 3.3 million copies in print. Written by Owl Puke author Jane Hammerslough, it brings to budding paleontologists' fingertips a wealth of information about 46 fascinating dinosaur species: period, name, size, diet, lifestyle, and habitat, along with lore and the story behind the dinosaur's discovery.

Meet Stegosaurus and Stegoceras. Quetzalcoatlus, with a wingspan the size of a WWII fighter plane's. The tanklike Edmontonia, and the predators, including T-Rex, Giganotosaurus, and Allosaurus, who strode 8 feet with every step--try out-running that! Plus, why there is no longer a Brontosaurus (because it turned out to be the same animal as the Apatosaurus), how Jurassic Park got it right--and wrong (Dilophosaurus was a fierce predator, but did not spit venom), and is the Plesiosaur alive and well--as the legendary "Nessie" of Loch Ness? 4-0 out of 5 stars My dinosaur loving son gives this book an A!
I've been having the worst time trying to review the alphabet with my 4 year old son. He is a dinosaur fanatic, so I was looking for this exact book for quite some time. Now he is more open to exploring and learning letters, since he also gets to read about dinosaurs at the same time. The illustrations could be better and I can think of some of the dinosaur names that could have been substituted for some of the letters, but overall this book fits the need :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Snappy Pop-Ups are the best!
Our 2 year old son received this book as a birthday present from his Nana. We all enjoy reading it and looking at the pop up pictures of the dinosaurs. The bold colors ad cute pictures keep him busy for hours. He even tries to repeat the dino's names! And with a pop up book to go with any occasion I 100% recommend this book to everyone with children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yet another Fantastic Snappy Book!
This is a great book! Each page has a different dinosaur, rhyming text, the dinosaur's name and a pronunciation key for the names. The pop-ups are first class (as always with Snappy books)! A favorite in our house!

5-0 out of 5 stars Colorful, Fun and Educational
My two year old son and I love reading this book together - the pop-ups are very colorful, imaginative and informative. We have some of the other SNAPPY books as well (colors, numbers, opposites, bugs, farm animals). My husband and I enjoy the books as much as my son! My son loves to point out different colors and really loves the wonderful pictures. It's a great book for the car as well - it keeps my son busy - he always seems to find something different with each turn of the page and giggles in delight .

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for kids
The best things about this book are the creative and detailed pop ups that mom and dad enjoyed as much as the kids. The text is fun and simple, perfect for young readers. My little boy looks forward to reading it every evening. It is a book that makes reading fun and interesting for beginners. I recommend it for anyone with young children and especially for kids reluctant to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars not the usaual boring pop-up book
This is one of several great pop-up books. The pages are colorful and very imaginative. The whole page comes to life. I'm very picky when it comes to pop-up books. I don't like ones that have just a face or a tail that sticks out, or things you have to pull to make it work. I just open the page and the giggles from my kids says it all. This book is fun for all ages {be mindful of little grabbing hands. } I find myself looking through it just for fun. They have one for bugs, farmland, Christmas, Halloween, opposites, numbers, and colors. I don't have them all but I will get them. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars UGHHH!
This book is good for one so out of date. However, it mentions two pioneers in the field of paleontology (Joseph Leidy, E.D. Cope), yet does not mention the fact that they worked for The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. The first dino skeleton ever displayed by Leidy (hadrosuarus foulkii) was displayed at the Academy. It is a sad day when you dicuss the history of paleontology yet neglect to mention the Academy.

3-0 out of 5 stars needs some updating
This book is 16 years old and needs some updating but it also contains a large amount of valid and valuable stuff. It is interesting to compare it with newer books about dinosaurs and see how much more we know about our reptilian predecessors than in 1984. Dino fans, give this one a chance! ... Read more

Dinosaurs are a huge subject, all right, as hundreds of huge volumes will testify. But suppose you'd like a handy little reference book on these extinct reptiles--maybe one that you could stick in your backpack or even in your pocket? This small but sturdy book from Dorling Kindersley fits the bill, with tons of information on all things relating to dinosaurs and their world. An introduction provides an overview of types of dinosaurs, discoveries, museum displays, historic periods, and dinosaur anatomy. (The anatomy section is fascinating, with comparative discussions of dinosaur heads, necks, limbs, tails, and skin. There's even a cutaway model of the insides of a dinosaur.) Information on specific types of dinosaurs follows, illustrated with drawings, fossils, skeletons, and realistic models that look like actual photos of real dinosaurs. Also included are resource and pronunciation guides, a glossary, and a complete index. Younger children who are dazzled by dinosaurs can enjoy this with an adult's help, and those in fourth grade and up will eat up these facts by themselves. A book to delight all dinosaur devotees! (With adult help, ages 5 to 8; independently, ages 9 to adult) --Marcie Bovetz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice introduction
This is a great book for a well-rounded general knowledge of dinosaurs. The only down part is that we still do not know much about dinosaurs and are improving our knowledge every day; since this book is relatively old, some things have changed in our view of dinosaurs today. I have documented the few inaccuracies, and hope that the publishers will issue a 2nd revised edition of this awesome book. At the time it was published, it was the most up-to-date compact book of its kind, a real break-through. If you want to have a good idea of what the dinosaurs were all about, then this is the book for you. It is so complete that it covers the facts that you would learn in an undergraduate 100-level course on dinosaurs. For those of you who are interested, the following are some of the things that have changed in the 2001 view of dinosaurs:

1) The Tyrannosaurs are now viewed as more closely related to the Raptors (Dromaeosaurids) instead of the Allosaurs (or Carnosaurs).

2) Its is now known that many therapods had feathers (other than the Aves), including Tyrannosaurs, a fact that was omitted from the book.

3) Oviraptors are no longer believed to be 'egg stealers' as the embryos found inside the eggs were determined to be of the same species.

4) In the extinction explanations section, they mentioned that the Dinosaurs died out gradually. However there is a phenomenon known as the Signor-Lipps effect that states that a sudden extinction can resemble a gradual one due to the fact that evidence and fossils are so scarce (because rarer species have lower sampling rates). This means that we still do not know if their death was gradual or quick. They also mentioned that a volcano was a possible cause. Volcanic activity would have been one of the side-effects of an impact, others being acid rain, tsunamis, and tornadoes. However the two leading theories are now the Alvarez theory (Asteroid impact which leads to a quick wiping out of a species) and the more gradual extinction via ecological change (retreating seas and climate change due to tectonic plate movement), which they failed to mention. It should be noted that the Alvarez theory is more widely accepted than the other.

5) The Classification chart is, as they correctly stated, continually changing and is now different from the one printed in their book.Updated versions can be found on the web.

Apart from these errors (due to continually changing views in dinosaur study), this is a great book that I would recommend to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most Excellent Dino Book For Children and Adults!
DK has done it again! This book is a wonderful resource for the family and the individual that is interested in dinosaurs. Why?

First, the book is compact. This means it can fit in small areas in your school bag, hippack or even a pocket. This means you can have the book as source materialon-hand without a great deal of personal imposition. If I personally wasto use a pocket, I would prefer a trouser's cargo pocket. Why?Because Icare about how my books age and how much damage they sustain.

Second, itis a typical DK book - in other words, beautifully illustrated. There areplenty of pictures both of actual fossils and modern science reproductionsof dinosaurs.

Third, I love the silhouette comparisons between a 6ft(1.8m) tall human and the dinosaur being spoken of.I only wish that theywould have more of them in this book.Between this volume and three ofDK's other books (The DK Great Dinosaur Atlas also by William Lindsay andthe Ultimate Dinosaur Book and the DK Guide to Dinosaurs both by DavidLambert) you will get a wide variety of these silhouettes.Unfortunately,Mr. Lindsay and Mr. Lambert, despite both being from the British Museum, disagree on some of the silhouettes.Oh well, take the one you like bestas gospel, eh?I do!

Fourth, it is well organized. It is divided intofive sections:

Section 1 introduces the reader to dinosaurs. It speaksof what is a dinosaur, the world of the dinosaurs, the lifestyles of thedinosaurs, anatomy of the dinosaurs, the first dinosaurs, and of course, the extinction of the dinosaurs.

Sections II & III are the typicalFUN parts of a dinosaur book that everyone is looking for - the parts thatdirectly deal with the many types of dinosaurs. They are split into thetraditional two categories of dinosaurs: the lizard-hipped or Saurischiandinosaurs and the bird-hipped or Ornithischian dinosaurs.

Section IVdeals with the sea and air animals that many consider dinosaurs, but arenot.Despite not being the stars of the book, the section does providesome good information on these.

Section V is the reference section.Thiscan be priceless for the person who wants to know more about dinosaurs. The main value is two pages of dinosaur museums and sites in the USA andCanada with their addresses. An improvement here would have been theinclusion of WEB site addresses and phone numbers as well. The nextvaluable part of this section is the cannot-do-without pronunciation guidethat most parents find to be a lifesaver.I know my wife depends on it! The section also talks of dino-discovery history, dino records and myths, how dinosaurs are taken out of the ground after being discovered andcontains a glossary.

What is bad about the book? Not much!Only twothings come to mind, one wishful and one serious. The wishful matter isthat I just wish there was even more cool information about dinosaurs inthe book. But if that was the case, it probably would not be the smallconvenient book to carry around. On the other hand the serious matter isthat it was published in 1995.That means it is approaching six years old. That means dinosaurs like the Giganotosaurus from S. America and theCarchardontosaurus from Africa are not present.Simply, it is not going toshow the latest discoveries. Is this a problem? No!This book isdesigned to be a handy reference, not an end-all-be-all reference. As longas DK updates this book every ten years or so, this book will be an eternalhandy dino guide. If you are looking for something like an end-all-be-alldinosaur reference I would refer you to three books: The Complete Dinosaurby Farlow & Bret-Surman, The Dinosauria by Weishampel, Dodson &Osmolska and Dinosaurs: The Encyclopedia and its Supplement I by Glut &Bret-Surman.These are the ultimate books in the field. They are also notwritten for the common man.The level of writing/reading is fairly intensefor the average reader. If you are looking for what would be a goodintroductory textbook on dinosaurs for the dino-fan with a good interest inthe subject and decent reading comprehension, I would recommend Fastovskyand Weishampel's The Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs.See myreview of that book. ...
