Book Description

It’s been said that when the talkies came along, the only Hollywood star who wasn’t worried about how his voice would sound was Rin Tin Tin. In celebration of Rinty and those other truly indestructible stars of the cinema—the four-legged kind—writer and critic Stephen M. Silverman, with the help of his chocolate Lab, Coco, offers this lighthearted photographic treat.

Combining Tinseltown glamour and canine appeal from Hollywood’s earliest days to its latest releases, Movie Mutts is a veritable dog walk of fame. Here are Toto with Judy Garland; Scraps with Charlie Chaplin in A Dog’s Life; Lassie shoulder to shoulder with that other screen queen, Elizabeth Taylor; even the beleaguered border terrier in There’s Something About Mary. Accompanying the images is a clever, breezy commentary (part of it from the dog’s point of view) that provides a thumbnail history of dogs in the movies. This tender tribute is a one-of-a-kind gift with guaranteed appeal for film buffs and dog lovers alike. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "MOVIE MUTTS" : FOUR PAWS UP AND A LICK
Dog lovers and film enthusiasts alike will thoroughly enjoy Movie Mutts, a clever offering about the history and importance of the canine thespian to the silver screen. The book begins with some interesting background notes on how dogs were artfully incorporated into early filmmaking and sustained their roles through more sophisicated cinematic efforts, including animation. The authors (the principal writer is Coco, but her "human" gets some credit here) concentrate on the films of the 30's and 40's, many of which may be unfamiliar to readers, but the book achieves a likeable balance between the true superstars like RinTinTin and Lassie and the (shall we say) lesser known breed of Hollywood's four-legged finest. The impressive array of photographs is interspersed with interesting bits of legend and trivia (just how much did Toto get paid for The Wizard of Oz?) as well as Coco's clever reflections on her more famous brethren and even contains some helpful bits of advice on the inner workings of the canine mind. ("And make no mistake. We know when you're about to leave town.") I enjoyed the thematic organization of the pictures, which highlights some of the major social roles of dogs in film, with clever titles like "Family Friends," "Dogs in Heat" and the particularly enjoyable "Canine Cupids." (On a personal note, since I read the chilling chapter on "Bad Dogs," I haven't been able to look my own two pooches straight in the eye. But I shouldn't be doing that anyway, Coco admonishes.) You'll find yourself reflecting on your personal favorites, predictably, most of them from your childhood. Though I must say, Coco, the blatant omission of the fiercely intelligent Duke, from 1964's Dead Ringer, or Cleo, the sassy bassethound from the 50's sitcom The People's Choice (she must have had an early film career!) was surprising. But I'll be a "good sport" and toss it up to the depth and expanse of a subject matter that can't possibly covered in a hundred or so pages,. And just wait for the sequel.

Give it "four paws up and a lick." Add this one to your gift list for the dogowning movie buffs among your circle of friends. ... Read more

Book Description

The rib-thin, black-and-white rabbit hound turned up at Hal Borland's Connecticut farm one Christmas night in the middle of a nasty winter storm. Pat, as the dog came to be known, and his raffish travelling companion, a young pup, "were even more unwelcome than the weather," but after a few preliminaries both settled in as members of the Borland household. The pup eventually found his permanent home elsewhere, but Pat became Hal Borland's true companion - and a local legend, the terror of woodchucks for miles around. With his keen sensitivity to the natural world, Borland here recounts, with deep affection and wonder, how a man and his dog can form a magical and unforgettable partnership.First published in 1961, THE DOG WHO CAME TO STAY "will appeal to many sportsmen and to all people who have ever been closely attached to a dog." 5-0 out of 5 stars Coyote
In Wyman's book, Coyote, he not only captures the essence of the lifeway of the coyote, but he is giving the reader a glimpse into the psyche of himself. He is truely a naturalist, giving credit to the predator where credit is due. Knowing Wyman personally, and having received my copy of this book from him, I know first hand that he wrote this book with respect to years of hard earned knowledge of this creature. Whether Wyman is hunting the coyote, taking it's picture, or writing about this hard working animal, he is always considerate and honest. What you see in this book...well, that's exactly what you would see if you had the inclination to visit with these wild cretures in their own habitat. The photos in this book are the REAL thing...there are no rented animals in here. Read about the coyote and learn to appreciate the part this animal plays in our ecological system!

Also, I would like to suggest this book be given as a gift to others without hesitation, young and old alike. It's my mothers favorite book of Wymans...I like them all! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book!
I read this book years ago when it was first published in hardcover. It was the best book on wolves I have ever read. The fact that it is scientifically accurate actually made it more readable, not the least bit dry or dull. The wolves are complex, intelligent creatures that you come to admire even more as you read about their elaborate social rituals. I am buying this book for the second time! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
This book is a wonderful summation of one of the longest wolf studies ever. As a life-long visitor to Algonquin Park, it is a pleasure to learn about the wolves in and around the park. I never realized how many wolves were in that area. Although this is a wonderful book, I was disheartened by the hatred displayed by people towards these researchers and the beautiful wolves that they are studying.

Book Description

The premier predatory animal in the Southwest, and certainly the most controversial, the wolf came to grips with European settlement, particularly the livestock industry, and lost. First in Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico, and finally in Old Mexico, the southwestern wolf was driven to extirpation; ironically, the last wolves were hunted down not long before the advent of laws—and a conservation ethic—that could have saved them. Drawing on reports of the U.S. government’s former Office of Predatory Animal and Rodent Control (PARC), and from accounts of wolf hunters themselves, David E. Brown has compiled the history of the wolf’s elimination. Included is a complete documentation of the eradication program, fascinating stories of the last few wolves that eluded hunters, and information on wolf biology from those who best knew its habits.

Since its first publication in 1983, The Wolf in the Southwest has proven itself as the single most valuable and informative reference to Canis lupus of the Mexican borderlands. Now, the descendents of the last wolves captured in Mexico once again roam portions of wilderness in New Mexico and Arizona. With reintroduction, this second edition contains a new Preface and Epilogue by David E. Brown, and a new Foreword by author and biologist Harley Shaw. Once again there are wolves in the woods, and just as in the days of the pioneers, people are taking sides. Love him or hate him, the wolf is again making history, and The Wolf in the Southwest is back in print. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A Dramatic Reminder
The distant howl of the wolf seems at home alongside campfires under a brilliant moon. The echoes of those cries ring with loneliness and pain. They are forever linked with the wildest of the wild, nature untouched and pure. The Southwestern U.S. to Mexico is a wild and natural area, but far from untouched and pristine wilderness areas. Moon-filled nights are no longer punctuated by the wolf's plaintive calls due to a century of persecution that eliminated all species of wolf from the South West. With the attempts to reintroduce wild packs and the subsequent controversy regarding this issue a new edition of the David E. Brown's brilliant 'The Wolf in the Southwest - The Making of an Endangered Species' has been released by High Lonesome Books. Originally published in 1983, 'The Wolf in the Southwest' documents the fervor to rid the wolf from the wilds of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas from the late 19th century until the late 1970's. David E. Brown has painstakingly researched his book from decades of archival records documenting the plight of the southwest cattlemen. These ranchers whose heavy losses to cattle depredation lead to a government sanctioned declaration of war on all predators. It is a grimly fascinating tale of the sad history of the wolf in the southwest. David E. Brown's 'The Wolf in the Southwest' is the definitive resource on the various species of southwestern wolf, covering their biology, territory and first hand descriptive accounts of their place within their historical environment. These coincide with various trapper reports, techniques and encounters. Thorough and complete with many historical photos and documents, David E. Brown brings this shortsighted era to life. 'The Wolf in the Southwest - The Making of an Endangered Species' is a bitter read for it eulogizes, not celebrates the wolf. A dramatic reminder of how destructive the world was and still is and how once we set foot in pristine natural areas we slowly begin to lose them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wolf In The Southwest
As always, David Brown's revised edition of The Wolf In The Southwest, meets the highest standards in wildlife writing! This updated version is the 'cornerstone' of information on the history of the Mexican Gray Wolf in the southwest, and has practical insight included for the wolf's current status in Arizona and New Mexico. It is an unbiased, factual representation of historic gray wolf management and biology, and a valuable resource on this large carnivore, which once again roams the manificently rugged Arizona-New Mexico border country. ... This book is just fine for someone who wants to crack the surface on these canines, but is lacking for anyone wanting significant information. After all, a book can cover only so much information in a mere 22 pages! The pictures, however, are very nice, and the smaller boxed text (there are five) are interesting. Nonetheless, if you are looking for a wealth of information on Coyotes, Foxes, and Wolves, keep looking - this book has little that could not be found in any decent book on the subject. ... Book Description

Not all Labrador retriever puppies become duck hunters. But this exciting, fun-loving look at the first year in the lives of those that do is sure to delight Lab owners of every kind. After all, the Little Duck Hunter's journey from cute and cuddly fur ball to loyal retriever and family friend has elements that all Lab owners have experienced. There's housebreaking (quite literally), incessant chewing, basic obedience training (who's training whom?), and an unbelievable range of surprises, twists and turns, and trials and errors. Indeed, few things are as exciting as the journey a Lab pup takes in his first year. It's a time of incredible change-not only for the dog, but for his human family as well.
Photographer Lee Thomas Kjos's brilliant color photographs capture these magic moments in the lives of little duck hunters-yellow, black, and chocolate-from the time they're brought home to the time they venture out on their first hunt. The images are so vivid and compelling that readers will run the full gamut of emotions they experienced during their own dog's puppyhood. The text, too, will elicit chuckles, laughter, sighs, coos, and even tears. Anyone who's ever brought a puppy home will findthemselves falling under the same spell all over again.

This book should really be called "The Unbearable Cuteness of Lab Puppies." Anyone who loves puppies will be charmed and beguiled by this word and picture chronicle of the first months in the life of Labrador retriever puppies. You don't have to be a duck hunter to enjoy it, either, as most of the photos capture Labs doing everyday things like playing with their littermates, chewing whatever they can get their sharp little teeth into, harrassing the family cat, and getting into one kind of mischief or another. ...
