5-0 out of 5 stars Will hold special appeal to those interested in wildlife
Karen R. Jones' very specific title, Wolf Mountains: A History Of Wolves Along the Great Divide, will hold special appeal to those interested in American and Canadian wildlife conservation in general and wolf conservation efforts throughout Canada and the United States in particular. Karen Jones provides a blended focus on Canadian and American national parks, and the wolf's place in their ecological systems, including examining interactions between wolves and people in four Rocky Mountain regional parks. The different terrains and histories of these Canadian and American parks (including the Yellowstone National Park), makes for a fine foundation for surveying the history of human/wolf encounters from early to modern times. ... Book Description

Antarctica: "...to a lonely land I know." recounts a young man's experience during the Golden Age of Antarctic exploration immediately following the end of WWII. Ken Pawson details life in the remote bases where he and his colleagues conducted surveys, explorations and gathered scientific data. Their means of transport were teams of Inuit Sled Dogs.

Ken Pawson gives a compelling narrative often laced with humor. This is not the stuff of dramatic heroism. It is the story of ordinary life in extraordinary surroundings, of men and dogs doing the jobs they were assigned to do. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for research!
I recently did a research paper on coyotes, interested in why they are increasing in the area. I had 18 sources and this book provided the most informative and comprehensive material available; it is also the most current group study available. It provides wonderful insight into the world of the coyote, such as habitat, social hierarchy, breeding, territorial patterns, general behaviors, etc. I fell in love with the coyote after reading it, and was disappointed to hear about the re-introduction of the wolf (predator to coyote) to Yellowstone National Park. The book also contains the most beautiful photographs of coyotes available. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding book and very readable
A friend recommended this book to me after I asked him why coyotes are turning up everywhere in the US. Wilkinson gets at the heart of why persecuting coyotes is a bad idea. If you love coyotes, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

Book Description

A combination of illustrated field guide, fact book, and folklore collection, "Wolves" is a new kind of wildlife book. This concise, illustrated handbook presents an accurate, informative portrait of wolves in their natural habitat, along with an examination of their relationship to man.

Admired by some and hated by others, wolves have been the focus of an astonishlingly passionate political struggle over the past few years. Endangered and all but exterminated, these predators are now returning to habitats from which they had completely disappeared. With conservationists insisting that wolves are needed to control burgeoning populations of elk and deer, and with ranchers insisting that their livestock—and livelihoods—will be in danger, an objective, comprehensive (yet comprehensible) examination of wolves is needed and timely. Fact, fiction, history, and wildlife reference, "Wolves" is the first user-friendly guide to this species. ... Read more

Book Description

With more than 43 million dog owners in the U.S. today, the connection between man and dog has transcended centuries and species, resulting in human-canine relationships that range from dependent to indulgent.

National Geographic photographer Richard Olsenius and Washington Post journalist Angus Phillips begin their search for insight into man’s relationship with dogs on a remote hillside in Northern Israel with a 12,000-year-old fossil of a man buried with his trusty companion. Continuing with heartwarming vignettes, Olsenius and Phillips visit people with hardworking dogs on ranches and in airports, sportsmen with hunting hounds, and city-dwellers with pampered pooches. They capture the restorative powers of therapy dogs with hospital patients, the protectiveness of assistance dogs with disabled people, and the lifelines dogs become in rescue missions. The also pay tribute to the unparalleled, day-to-day companionship that these much-loved pets provide their owners. Dog Stories is a unique gift book and a touching exploration of fifteen centuries of unrivaled and unconditional friendship.

4-0 out of 5 stars Warm and fuzzy
The photographs make this book special, although there is quite a bit of information about human/dog interaction on its pages too. The information isn't just facts - feelings and emotions are represented too.

From the 10,000 year old tomb of a woman who was buried with her arm around her dog to the young people in the detention centre in California who train assistance dogs this bond between humans and dogs has held firm. The writer mentions some working dogs - sheep herders, sled dogs, guide dogs and drug sniffers but he makes it clear that most dogs are companion dogs who spend most of their time eating and sleeping.

The writer did a good job of exploring the bonding and the emotional contact between people and their dogs without too much mawkish sentiment. There was even a brief mention of the darker side of the relationship - older dogs who are abandoned by their humans.

But mostly this is a feel-good, happy book with wonderful photographs of people and their dogs. Read it to relax and enjoy. ... Read more

Book Description

"How much better we would be as dog
owners if we knew who dogs really are and
understood what motivates them."
--from the Foreword by Elizabeth Marshall Thomas

Why are dogs typically so devoted to their human companions? What is "pack mentality," and what does it have to do with your dog? How did breeds as different as Great Danes and dachshunds evolve? What kind of dog is best for a household with small children?

From barking to marking, wet noses to wagging tails, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Dog answers the most puzzling questions you've ever had about these most companionable animals. In the spirit of the Discovery Channel television series Wild Discovery, this book delves into the heart of dog behavior, every beat of which is, in fact, an echo of the wolf ancestors in each dog's bloodline. You'll recognize the wolf's defense of territory in your dog's wild barking at every passing postal worker, and see wolf-pack hierarchy in the domestic dog's devotion to his human master.

Written in an accessible, authoritative style, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Dog breaks through "smart dog, dumb dog" misconceptions, instead offering fascinating insights into dog learning, language, and intelligence, all factors influenced by the legacy of the wild dog within.

This book is also packed with practical tips on the fundamentals of dog care, particularly as they relate to your dog's breed, his heightened senses, and the various life stages through which he'll pass. Included is expert advice on choosing a dog to suit your lifestyle, caring responsibly for your pet, dog-proofing your home, and ensuring a smooth transition and proper bonding during the first days at home. Once the dog is a member of your family, this useful guide explains how best to play with him, keep him safe, and even train him and travel with him.

Everything you need to know to keep your dog healthy and happy is covered, including feeding and nutrition, cleaning and grooming, common health problems, fighting fleas, pregnancy and birth, caring for an aging dog, vet visits, and emergency care.

A detailed breed breviary rounds out the book. The spotlight is on each of the fifty most popular dog pedigrees: its origin, life expectancy, coat type, grooming requirements, size, activity level, and temperament. An informative dog owner's resource guide follows.

Generously illustrated with more than 225 appealing, full-color photographs showing the striking similarities between domestic and wild dogs, Wild Discovery Guide to Your Dog will strike the fancy of first-time dog owners and veteran dog lovers alike.

Wonderful photos and captions emphasize all the learning points. I especially liked the Dog Care section that showed basic health care for your dog. Book Description

Through gentle training methods learned from Ray Hunt--the original "horse whisperer"--Robert Milner shows retriever owners how to train the hunting retriever by using its own natural tendencies instead of force. Supplemented with the latest scientific research on how dogs learn, Milner's easy step-by-step training regimen uses positive reinforcement to create the perfect hunting and at-home companion. There is no better training method for the hunter who wants a calm, steady, and obedient retriever.

Milner, who has been training retrievers professionally for more than thirty years, reverses the trend of difficult dogs and difficult training methods and offers a system every hunter can easily understand and follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfection!
It is very difficult for some to "think outside the box" with regards to training their dogs.Sometimes one needs to explore the results of the most popular training methods and realize the room for significant improvement. We trained our first dog using these familiar methods. She would retreive anything, anytime, anywhere. She would bring anything she could find to anyone who would throw it to her.She was as far from a "steady" dog as you could find.
Now, using Mr. Milners techniques (which are very different than the "popluar techniques") we have an incredibly obedient and steady young lab.The difference is amazing. Both dogs came from similar lines (field trial)and they couldn't be more different. It works, and works well.Very easy to read and implement. You must buy this book! You will not regret it.
Six stars from us!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I Recommend This Training Guide
I bought this book soon after bringing home my lab six months ago.I don't hunt. But I figure that if hunting is what this dog was bred to do, I would spend some time giving him something of the experience. We do walk the forest preserves and farmer's fields frequently.

The methods are based on understanding trainer and pup's behaviors, simple obedience commands, creating a steady dog, and training in habits that you want your dog to have. The lessons are set out as self-paced exercises. They are described concisely and clearly. I have found them to be easy and fun.My pup seems to like them, too.

This book is very enjoyable to read.I have read the chapters over and over again, getting some new insight nearly every time.We still have a ways to go before we have mastered all of the skills, but we have the confidence to keep trying because Milner's book has produced successes along the way we've passed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good...BUT, "it ain't all that"
Mr. Milner's training methods are fair to the dog, will not hurt him,and stresses the importance of the dog's self-control and steadiness. But, I feel that the book is a bit overpriced for the little info. that it includes. Many, many things were covered more than once in the book.I kept thinking to myself..."didn't I just read that somewhere"...flip back a few pages..."yep, sure did"...almost verbatim.Too much "white space" on each page and between paragraphs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent approach to training your retriever...............
We have several books on the subject, all have their strenghts. Some are very technical, especially those written by/for field trialers.

This book's approach is excellent. If we had a dog trained to this books standards we would be very pleased indeed.

The book is well written and easy to follow/review.

Practical...............might be a good word to describe this book.Game Dog (R Wolters) was the favorite until we read this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Steady goes it
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.I am presently training my first labrador retriever to be a hunting dog and this book gave me a different approach than many of the regular authors waterfowl hunters read in order to train their own dogs: Richard Wolters, Bill Tarant, etc.I found this book to be well written and full of examples that really hit home after I had a chance to take a step back and access my own weaknesses as an amateur trainer, as well as, the weaknesses of my retriever. It offered a means to improve not only my abilities but also a positive manner in which my dog responded well to what I was asking her to do.I felt the book was well organized and the time the author takes to hammer home the importance of training a steady dog is well worth the read.

After reading several books on the subject, I feel that the more knowledge you can arm yourself with, the better results you will achieve in your training efforts.I don't believe there is one book that is the end all be all of dog training. That said, I would recommend this book to any amateur trainer that is more concerned with producing a confident and capable dog for the hunting field than with winning ribbons at a hunt test. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good book but OLD!
I ordered this from amazon and amazon shows a cover of the book and says its date is 1998. When I got the book it was a completely different cover and the publish date inside said 1978. No other date than that one and whats with the change of the cover? This cover is blue with a puppy on the front. Looks like they may have updated the cover but nothing else.

However, the information inside is very good and covers a lot of stuff and pretty accurate still for 2002. It is worth buying even though the picture quality is very poor black and white newspaper print type, the information alone is worth the price of the book. I would however buy it used if I were to buy it over again. There are some colored photo's in the middle of the book of breeds, but also not very good quality either.

4-0 out of 5 stars extremely informative
This is a well written book, easy for the novice breeder tofollow. I have referred to this book time and again over the pastseveral years. Although easy to read, the layout of information makes it hard to find specific subjects unless you have made it a point to mark pages. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pack Training Primer
A practical and common-sense approach to dog training, from the dog's point of view. If you only read one dog-training book, this is the one you should read. Written by a professional dog trainer who has trained over 3000 dogs over the last 40 years, it is both an enjoyable and educational read that teaches people how simple it is to live in harmony with a dog. Shaping the Wolf Within Your Dog is a study of wolves and dogs. With an understanding of how wolves (the ancestor of the dog) communicate and establish social order within the pack, we can project our alpha status to our dogs. As the author states: If your dog believes you are the pack leader, he will be motivated to be an obedient and well-mannered pack member. But if your dog believes he is the alpha, he will rule as he sees fit. Mr. Childs has offered an alternative means of training dogs, one that uses neither force or food rewards. He calls his method Pack Training. By communicating your love, will, and authority in your dog's language, you will not have to resort to bribery or force or clickers. With an understanding of wolf behavior and communication, you will understand what your dog's behavior is saying, and you will also know how to respond like an alpha wolf. You will understand why your dogs jumps on you, pulls you when he walks on lead, and doesn't come when you call; you will also know why dog-bite is more common today than any other time in history, and how you can protect your family from becoming a dog-bite statistic. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Woof, woof
WOLF WARS is the short (170 pages), inside story by conservationist Hank Fischer on the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park. Curiosity inspired me to buy the book after visiting the park last October, during which time I thought I saw a wolf crossing a snow-covered clearing way off in the distance. It was definitely a large canine. Well, perhaps it was only Sergeant Preston's dog King on a mission for the RCMP.

To make a short story even shorter, WOLF WARS briefly summarizes the successful effort to eradicate the wolf from the western US at the turn of the last century, then reviews the recent, also successful, federal effort to re-establish wolves in that same region. The best chapters are the first, which describes the live capture of wolves in Alberta, Canada, and the last, which describes their subsequent release into YNP in 1995. In between, Fischer recounts ad nauseam the 20-year battle fought in the US Congress and the courts to design, popularize, legitimize and implement the plan to bring the animals back in the face of rabid opposition from the region's cattle and sheep ranchers. This relatively lengthy section focusing chiefly on government infighting was truly eye-glazing stuff, and best left to bureaucrats-in-training.

Yes, reading this book did teach me something - always a good thing in itself. But, a simple 10-page pamphlet would have sufficed. ... Read more
