Book Description

From the acclaimed Rick Carey ("a humanist and a journalist of considerable depth" Washington Post), a fascinating chronicle of a fast-disappearing fish-and of the people whose lives and livelihoods depend on it.

Since the days of the Persian Empire, caviar has trumpeted status, wealth, prestige, and sex appeal. Today it goes for up to one hundred dollars an ounce, and aficionados will go to extraordinary lengths to get their fill of it. According to acclaimed writer Richard Adams Carey, that's just the problem. In this spectacular jaunt, Carey immerses himself in the world of sturgeon, the fish that lays these golden eggs. What he finds is disturbing: Sturgeon populations worldwide have declined 70 percent in the last twenty years, most drastically in the Caspian Sea. The beluga sturgeon, producer of the most coveted caviar, has climbed to number four on the World Wildlife Fund's most-endangered species list.

Armed with a novelist's eye for human eccentricity and an investigator's nose for trouble, Carey takes us on an illuminating journey across the globe to uncover the secrets of the sturgeon. On that trek we meet the fascinating real-life characters both profiting from its scarcity and fighting to save it. A high-stakes cocktail of business, diplomacy, technology, and espionage, The Philosopher Fish is, at its heart, the epic story of a 250-million-year-old fish struggling to survive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all pike fisherman
As an oudoor writer myself and the host of both radio and television shows I am always looking for material to recomend.
This book not only covers fly-fishing for pike, but gets to the core of pike behavior. Barry does an excellent job of explaining what pike are doing when and why. He covers water temperture, seasonal movement, the influence of structure, cover, baitfish and other predators. I truly believe this book will make you a better all around angler.
Terry Wickstrom, Host "Mountain States Fishing" television

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Any Pike Angler
This is such an awesome book for ANY pike angler. The first few chapters explain locations and seasonal movements of pike, and the science behind the pike's environment including feeding habits, spawning, different lake types, etc. The "Presentations for Pike on the Fly" chapter is really where the fly-fishing aspect takes over (Ch 5). Many new recipies for pike flies, over 20 in total. The great thing about this book is that Barry explains how he uses each type of fly and when to use specific types of flies. If you haven't read his first book, "Pike on the Fly," read that one first and then get this book. "Mastering Pike on the Fly" is a 10-year refinement of the tactics explained in "Pike on the Fly." Barry Reynolds knows his stuff well!! ... Read more

Book Description

Goldfish were originally brought to Japan from China in 1502, to be raised exclusively by aristocrats as highly prized pets. In the 1800s, however, they became popular among the general public, and ultimately a unique culture of breeders, collectors, and connoisseurs came into being. Packed with photographs, Kingyo: The Artistry of Japanese Goldfish offers a delightful visual tour of goldfish in Japanese art and design, together with a description of the goldfish breeds that have developed in Japan over hundreds of years of meticulous cultivation.

Included in the volume is a novella written in the 1930s titled "A Riot of Goldfish" which tells of the impossible love of a breeder’s son for the daughter of a wealthy patron. As his love grows into an obsession, he attempts to create a goldfish that will capture and reflect her beauty. The story charmingly evokes life in Japan in the early twentieth century and sheds light on the aesthetics of goldfish appreciation.

The stunning visual materials presented here reveal the vast iconography of goldfish in the graphic and decorative arts of Japan, extending to textiles, ceramics, paintings, lacquer ware, toys, and even household items. This book will be an inspiration for designers, collectors, and anyone interested in Japanese art. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MIXED FEELINGS - TOUGH FOR BEGINNER
The strength of this book is the number of color photographs identifying an amazing number of fishes. The shots are clear and well taken. It is a strong, thick, well illustrated reference book. However, I believe this book is difficult to use for someone who just starts saltwater tank. First, all the fishes are listed in their scientific names (not the names given in the store). Therefore, you first have to look at an index table of "store names" which translates into scientific names, then look into the scientfic names' index table to find the page. It can take lots of time at first. Not very convenient. Second, there is absolutely no text about any fish - only symbols that give you information about food, environment... I guess that's why this work is called the "mini-atlas". The problem of using only symbols is that the information can be subjective and lack context. For example, the book does not recommend any trigger for a novice. If you have only fishes and no corals in the tank, why not? They are the least likely to die and will live long as long as you get other fishes they can get along with. In summary, this is a good reference book but do not expect to find much specific information in it.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best resources for the marine fish keeper.
This is one of my favorite books. It provides information and more importantly photos on nearly 2000 fish. The information gives you the basics about each fish, how big they get, what they eat, are they agressive, etc. But the best aspect is the photos. With over 1900 photos it is the first book I go to when I want to look up a fish. Or when I'm thinking of what to put in that empty tank I'll often browse through this book looking for neat fish.

This book gives you the most for your money!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must have reference for both beginner and advanced
This reference allowed me to find compatible species for my reef tank. Many aquarium stores have staff that aren't as informed as they should be. This reference saved me from a potential disaster in choosing the wrong species of fish.

If you are looking for a way to identify your marine fish in your aquarium look no further. Dr. Burgess Mini-Atlas of Marine Aquarium Fishes is a great reference and pictorial guide to marine aquarium fish. Do not be mistaken about this books intentions! It is an identification guide with lots of pictures and references so you can identify and classify marine aquarium fish. Book Description

With colored pencils, graphite, and painstaking attention to scientific detail, Joseph Tomelleri has created 163 magnificent illustrations that are both technically and aesthetically satisfying, capturing subtle differences among fishes that are lost to the camera lens.

More than one hundred species are illustrated in full color--some for the first time ever, some for the first time as male/female pairs and juveniles. Included are the fishes of the entire central U.S.--from the Great Lakes through the Mississippi Valley to the southern tip of Texas, and west to the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

To write the accompanying text, which focuses on the ecology and natural history of each species, Tomelleri teamed up with fellow biologist Mark Eberle. Their species-by-species accounts are informative but not technical, and interwoven with folklore and anecdotes.

Do you know, for example, what fish looks like "Mother Nature's hand-held vacuum cleaner?" Can you name a minnow that reaches five to six feet in length? Or the fish that sometimes turns up in farmers' fields--alive? What fish has a gizzard? Which one swims a victory lap after it catches its prey? Tomelleri and Eberle solve these mysteries and many more in this lavishly illustrated compendium of fish facts and lore. ... Read more

Covering tropical marine fishes of the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, Florida, the Bahamas, and Bermuda, this field guide by C. Lavett Smith (curator emeritus, Department of Ichthyology, American Museum of Natural History in New York) sets the tropical-fish standard. There are 417 truly magnificent color photographs evincing the glories of the coral reefs and full-text descriptions for more than 400 species, each with its own range map. In addition, the guide includes maps of the regions, more than 100 fish anatomy illustrations, and close to 800 more brief species descriptions. Easy to use and understand, lightweight, and sturdily constructed for travel, the field guide is a great boon for one's snorkeling or scuba-diving vacations. --Stephanie Gold ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Necessary installment.
The Audubon Guide to Tropical Marine Fishes is used for identifying brightly colored fish that are most likely to found in the open ocean or on reefs. This guide is different from its predecessor, "Audubon Guide to Fishes" in many ways. First off, the range is quite different, containing a wider variety of fish. This book also takes up where "Fishes" left off. There were so many species to cover that there needed to be more explanation in a second book, "Tropical Marine Fishes".
So, this is the correct field guide to take along on a scuba trip to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Florida, or other places that the guide covers. Since it is much smaller than "Reef Fish Identification" by Paul Humann, it is much easier to carry along in a smaller pack, and one does not have to worry about the bulkiness of other guides.
Now for the content: There are over four categories of fish, including : bass like fishes, sharks & whales, and Eels. The butterflyfish and damselfish are the most colorful part of the entire guide. There are a nice amount of frequently seen sharks talked about here, but not as many as in "Audubon Guide to Fishes, Whales, and Dolphins", which is a follow up. So, if you basically want a straightforward guide to saltwater fish, take a look at this and the original Guide to Fishes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best one out there
This is the best book I've seen for identifying fish in this region when snorkeling, diving, or tide-pooling. I own & use several, but if you're only going to buy one guide, this is the one to get.

The illustrations alone would make this better than anything else on the market. Most guides rely on artists' renderings or studio photographs of dead fish. This book illustrates each of over 400 species with a close-up color photograph of a live fish in the water. Incredible.

The lay-out is good for identification; fish are grouped together by shape. That means you don't have to know much about fish to quickly look up something you saw. You can then cross-reference it to a complete description.

The physical manufacture of the book is also a plus. Its small size and flexibility make it almost unnoticable in luggage or a beach bag. It's also a little water-resistant: my copy has seen more than its fare share of dunkings, and still acts like a book instead of a soggy mess.

Of the few criticisms I have of this book, one would be that the index isn't too good (if Rainbow Runner isn't listed under "R", then where is it?). This isn't too much of a shortcoming, though, given that a field guide is usually used to identify species by appearence, not the other way around.

If you plan on observing fish in this region, I highly recommend this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book contains wonderful photographs of many tropical marine species. Some of the descriptions of the species, though, use complicated terminology and can be confusing. Other than that, all the features are excellent. After the description of each family of fish, there is a list of genera in that family and information on those genera. Also, each species has its own range map. Species that do not have a photograph are also described briefly. A pretty good book, especially since it has information on so many fish including sharks, rays, eels, and others.

4-0 out of 5 stars divingnut
I did find this book very useful, however it is slightly cumbersome to use if you are in a hurry (on the dive boat between sites) so be sure to write down your description of what you saw and look it up later in your hotel. The photos are fairly good (some are a little dark for my taste) and really useful for a beginning diver or snorkler. I would buy it again and plan on getting the campanion Coral Reefs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensible
As a diver and as a hobbyist of home reef systems, I find this book to be indispensible in identifying various reef fishes located in our Eastern waters. The book provides and focuses on distiguishing characteristics and certain behaviors that a diver or a hobbyist might see in encounters with these fish. Contains a great full-color plate section as well as basic outlines/silhouettes and of course brief yet detailed descriptions. An excellent work, now if I could just find its companion for corals.... ... Read more

Book Description

For hundreds of years, the New England cod fishery was one of the most productive in the world, with higher average annual landings than any comparable ocean area. But in the late 1980s, fish catches dropped precipitously, as the cod, flounder and other species that had long dominated the region seemed to lose their ability to recover from the massive annual harvests. Even today, with fishing sharply restricted, populations have not recovered. Largely overlooked in this disaster is the intriguing human and scientific puzzle that lies at its heart: an anguished, seemingly inexplicable conflict between government scientists and fishermen over how fish populations are assessed, which has led to bitter disputes and has crippled efforts to agree on catch restrictions. In The Great Gulf, author David Dobbs offers a fascinating and compelling look at both sides of the conflict. With great immediacy, he describes the history of the fisheries science in this most studied of oceans, and takes the reader on a series of forays over the Gulf of Maine and Georges Bank on both fishing boats and research vessels. He introduces us to the challenges facing John Galbraith, Linda Despres, and Jay Burnett, passionate and dedicated scientists with the National Marine Fisheries Service who spend countless hours working to determine how many fish there really are, and to the dilemma of Dave Goethel, a whipsmart, conscientious fisherman with 20 years's experience who struggles to understand the complex world he works in while maintaining his livelihood in an age of increasing regulation. Dobbs paints the New England fishery problem in its full human and natural complexity, vividly portraying the vitality of an uncontrollable, ultimately unknowable sea and its strange, frightening, and beautiful creatures on the one hand, and on the other, the smart, irrepressible, unpredictable people who work there with great joy and humor, refusing to surrender to the many reasons for despair or cynicism. For anyone who read Cod or The Perfect Storm, this book offers the next chapter of the story-how today's fishers and fisheries scientists are grappling with the collapse of this fishery and trying to chart, amid uncertain waters, a course towards its restoration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Full Title Says It All
The title of this book says it all. Freshwater stingrays need more care and attention than most other freshwater fishes. This book covers the precautions regarding usage of heaters (esp. submersible), pH, diet, disease, etc. and watch out for their stings (spines), breeding, etc. It's a good collection in a small book. Some readers may find information that are easily found in other beginner fish books like filtration, etc, but all information are well-presented. I have been searching information for freshwater rays and compare with the info in this book, there are some things that I had not known or realize before, for example, regarding the sensitivity of the china rays and also regarding selection---avoid rays showing "death curl" and undernourishment.... which is the first step in starting the hobby.

Anyone thinking of keeping freshwater stingrays should read this book first as these fishes needs much care and attention and also to avoid making expensive mistakes.

5-0 out of 5 stars About time!
Finally, a book that addresses one of the most interesting of the freshwater aquarium fish. Richard Ross obviously loves the ray. I wish I had this book when I got my first stingray, I would have known what I was in for. Covering everything from the many types of rays and the imprecise naming system to the proper way to administer antibiotics, this book gives you the information that you just don't get at your local fish store. Stingrays aren't goldfish, they take lots of care, but they can make a great addition to your large aquarium. And talk about a conversation starter! This is a must read for anyone looking for something a little more interesting in the tank. ... Read more

Great book! Full of color photos of not only the Splenden, but other Betta's. Goes over Breeding, Foods, Care, and most everything but indepth genetics....A must have the Splenden lover.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for non-beginners
I found this book easy to understand, but as a beginner with bettas it didn't answer all my questions. It mostly covers aspects of breeding bettas with more general info interspersed. It did make me want to try breeding bettas however! I would suggest another more beginner book if you've never had bettas or are not going to breed them. I can't recommend any though, as this is the only one I have so far. I bought this one at the recommendation of the guy in the fish store.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing book
The inaccuracies in this book were too numerous to count. What's more, very little practical information is given on good fish husbandry; instead, the author seems to focus more on "bettas for profit."

At one point, Mr. Maurus remarks that bettas are short-lived, and as a result it is best "...not to get too attached." What kind of advice is this for serious pet owners?

Very poor, other than the pictures. Otherwise I would have rated it a 0.

2-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment as a "Complete Introduction"
Perhaps this book should have been titled My Life Raising Bettas to Sell to Pet Shops. It is more interesting as autobiography than a reference. There are only seven pages of basic betta care. The majority of the chapters are related to breeding and raising bettas for a pet shop market. The section on fin forms and colors and color variations would make a handy basic reference---if it had pictures to illustrate the descriptions. It does have a lot of color pictures and the captions provide some of the most concise and interesting information. If you have an interest in economical fish raising and selling, this book has information for you. Don't buy it as your basic reference, do buy it for the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good starting book, for those interested
This book has a lot of information for the beginner and possibly an upscale betta breeder. I myself have this book and am quite pleased with the information it has. If you like or own bettas, buy this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My Very Favorite Fish Book
I do a lot of fishing and own quite a few books on fish. I also keep a life-time fish list, a list of every species of fish I have ever caught that I was able to correctly ID. I have found Fishes of the Pacific Coast by Gar Goodson in particular to be very useful for ID purposes, but I also find it to be very good writing, highly interesting, and full of information that most other fish ID books usually lack. For example, he tells you here if a fish is considered good eating, or not. He tells you where they are found, in how deep of water, locals, tidbits of history about the fish, and also what they eat.
I recently bought two new books on fish, one about fish of the Gulf of Mexico and another on fish of the Atlantic Ocean and looking them over I kept finding things missing; I suddenly realized how much better this book of Goodson's is.
The many illustrations by the artist Phillip J. Weisgerber are all excellent and every single one of them is in color. I am a writer myself, author of some 5 published books now,... and I appreciate books that are put together with care, appreciate writing that is fun and interesting and highly informative. Fishes of the Pacific Coast is an inexpensive book and a darn good one. If you fish in the Pacific you'll want to own this book and will find that having it, and bringing it along on fishing trips will add a great deal to your pleasure. Also, I would certainly recommend this book as a present for anyone who is interested in nature,in fish, in fishing. A marvelous book and one of my favorites for sure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishes of the Pacific Coast by Gar Goodson
Fishes of the Pacific Coast is an excellent reference guide with beautiful full color illustrations of approximately 450 fish. I truly appreciated the inclusion of the fish of the upper Sea of Cortez. Small ecological and historical blurbs are fascinating. The handbook size makes it a must have on your diving or fishing boat.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent handbook for identifying fishes of the Pacific.
As a volunteer for the new Long Beach (CA) Aquarium of the Pacific, I needed to quickly learn about fishes of the Pacific coast and how to identify them. This book exactly suits my needs. It is interesting and informative, without being too technical. The color illustrations are beautiful. This is the perfect book for anyone who wants to learn more about Pacific coast fishes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I should get this book
This book has to be about the coral reef and I am so obsessed with Finding Nemo. This book should know all about the coral reef and the great barrier reef. (where Nemo lives)

5-0 out of 5 stars a little treasure

Book Description

Penetration of light into aquatic ecosystems is greatly affected by the absorption and scattering processes that take place within the water. Thus within any water body, the intensity and color of the light field changes greatly with depth and this has a marked influence on both the total productivity of, and the kinds of plant that predominate in, the ecosystem. This study presents an integrated and coherent treatment of the key role of light in aquatic ecosystems. It ranges from the physics of light transmission within water, through the biochemistry and physiology of aquatic photosynthesis, to the ecological relationships that depend on the underwater light climate. ... Book Description

Quantitative Fish Stocks Assessment is the first textbook to capture the spirit of the "new fisheries management", in that it is driven by a recognition of the dynamic nature of fish populations and the application of computers and systems analysis to fisheries problems. It contains detailed numerical methods for parameter estimation, confidence bounds, and the formulation of harvesting strategies. The book builds upon the three themes in the subtitle. Choice refers to alternative management actions and alternative models.Dynamics reviews basic concepts of ecology and the interactions between fish and fishermen, as the latter respond to biological variability and to economic opportunity and regulation. Uncertainty describes the all-pervasive feature of fish stocks assessment. This text, written by two highly respected authorities in the field, should also become a standard reference in the area for professionals. It is clearly written at the level accessible to senior undergraduates and is easily understandable without advanced calculus and linear algebra. A diskette including relevant programs is also included with this book. ... Read more

Book Description

Fifteen years in the making, this updated edition raises the high standard of Bigelow and Schroeder's 1953 reference by drawing from a much larger base of information. Thirty-eight experts in fisheries biology and ichthyology clearly distill the enormous amount of knowledge gained during the past fifty years, including distribution figures from thirty years of annual trawl surveys; food habits accounts from surveys of the stomach contents of more than 30,000 fishes; and egg distribution data from a survey exceeding 10,000 samples. The contributors update Bigelow & Schroeder's 1953 material while presenting a wealth of new information, including thirty-three additional species accounts. By adding 50 percent more material and focusing the volume on data, the editors address the needs of today's biologists and commercial fishers, and ensure that Bigelow and Schroeder's Fishes of the Gulf of Maine, Third Edition will become the standard work in the field for the next fifty years. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love the ocean!
Another excellent Audubon guide focusing solely on the ocean. Since I am landlocked in the desert, this book assists me in remembering the saltwater sea and its inhabitants. The scope is not too wide at all, it covers the creatures that reside in the sea, including: mammals, fish, dolphins, Eels, and other fantastic creatures. This is the best of the three Audubon guides that cover the ocean. The reason for this is the coverage of freshwater and marine species. The photographs of these are also beautiful, showing enough of the animal for quick identification. None are dark and useless! To top it all off, the number of species listed in all categories is very impressive, coming off at 600++ entries. If you already love the ocean and its creatures, this field guide will further intrigue you!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Guide
I've been obsessed with fish for as long as I can remember. I have an entire shelf on my bookcase devoted to fish books, and this is by far the best book on that shelf. It has hundreds of pictures of every importent species in North America as well as Information on most every species. This is the definative guide on the market

2-0 out of 5 stars To wide a scope
Why not add frogs, snakes and other reptiles? Again the Audubon Society tries to market one guidebook to all of Canada and the US. For comparison Audubon's close competitor in the layperson field guide business uses three guides to cover the same area. Peterson's field guides has one for the Pacific coast, one for the Atlantic and one for freshwater. That's not even including the mammals! This guide is so broad as to be useless to the person looking at anything but the most common and conspicuous fishes. The photographs are often dark and useless, showing only the adult stages of several fishes which makes it difficult to determine what species you might have. The only plus I can give it as that it arranges fish by shape or other distinctive characteristics, this might be useful to the person unfamiliar with fish families. I made the mistake of getting it as my first field guide to fishes. From experience let me say this, get yourself a Peterson's to your local area. The color plates might be harder to learn to use, but they show a lot more.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any Fish lover... Fresh or Saltwater !

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 STARS AREN'T ENOUGH!
I'm a marine biologist wanna-be. Living in the midwest, I have no ocean to enjoy. This book helps fill that void. It is full of great pictures and information. Take my advice, get this book and impress your friends with the wealth of knowledge you are bound to learn from it. ... Read more
