5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate field ID companion!
Micronesian Reef Fishes is the ultimate referance for experienced marine biologists. The number of species listings are mind blowing. Some uncommon and unknown species are also offered. For example: "Reptilian Snake Eel", "Lagoon Picasso Triggerfish", and "Pink Snapper." These are a few of the thousands of uncommon and typical species identified. Every single category is described to the pinpoint in the front of the book, with the beautiful photos on the right hand side. This is not any annotated version of a field guide, and it seems to cover a wider range than Micronesia. Both editions of the guide are pretty much complete, but the hardback has more listings. However, it does not matter which edition you purchase, since the difference is hardly noticeable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fish Worshipers--Look No Further!
Robert Myer's book is a wonderful tool for all snorkelers, divers, and fish enthusiasts. Robert is a wonderful diver and photographer, and he has spent much time identifying Micronesian fish in their adult and juvenile stages. His book is easy to use but also detailed. This book is much-needed, because many of the fish included are native to particular regions, rare species, or under-studied.

I have used this book numerous times in Guam and other Micronesian islands (where we became friends with Robert!). This is really a great tool for identification, and not just for Micronesia, but also for the entire Indo-Pacific region. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Differences between the hardcover and softcover editions
I would just like to comment that the differences between the softcover and hardcover editions needs to be described in the advertisement. The hardcover edition is comprehensive, covering "every known shorefish from the region" as well as a detailed descriptive (i.e. measurements and counts, line drawings, keys, synonyms, etc.) that may be of more interest to the marine biologist or fish fanatic. The softcover is an abridged version with a re-written text, suitable as a field guide for divers and aquarists. Both have the same color section (the text section is separate from the photos). The content is excellent in the softcover; however, I will be returning it for the hardcover since it contains the kind of information I am interested in attaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazingly comprehensive and detailed guide
The author (a diver/photographer/biologist living in Guam) has scoured the scientific literature and distilled the essential facts about each species into this amazingly comprehensive guide. Color plates, drawings, tables and a concise paragraph describing each fish and its behavior make it an essential reference for divers and scientists almost anywhere in the tropical Indo-Pacific, not only Micronesia. The care and love of detail that have gone into this work are unsurpassed. The only work comparing with it in scope is the massive Smith's Sea Fishes (limited to the fishes of South Africa). Of the two, this may be the better if only because of its handy size and copious underwater photographs. ... Read more

Book Description

A passionate recounting of the natural history of the rise and fall of salmon in England, New England, and the Pacific Northwest-with recommendations for bringing the salmon back.

The salmon that symbolize the Pacific Northwest's natural splendor are now threatened with extinction across much of their ancestral range. In studying the natural and human forces that shape the rivers and mountains of that region, geologist David Montgomery has learned to see the evolution and near-extinction of the salmon as a story of changing landscapes. Montgomery shows how a succession of historical experiences -first in the United Kingdom, then in New England, and now in the Pacific Northwest -repeat a disheartening story in which overfishing and sweeping changes to rivers and seas render the world inhospitable to salmon. In King of Fish, Montgomery traces the human impacts on salmon over the last thousand years and examines the implications both for salmon recovery efforts and for the more general problem of human impacts on the natural world. What does it say for the long-term prospects of the world's many endangered species if one of the most prosperous regions of the richest country on earth cannot accommodate its icon species? All too aware of the possible bleak outcome for the salmon, King of Fish concludes with provocative recommendations for reinventing the ways in which we make environmental decisions about land, water, and fish. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Capitalism can't protect the Salmon
Dr. Montgomery shows that if the toxic and human waste poured into the rivers of the industrial revolution did not poison Salmon, the incipient capitalist institution of commercial fishing would swallow most of them..Montgomery quotes records from the holder of fishing rights on a specific part of the Thames river. Therecords of this particular holder shows he caught 66 salmon in 1801, 18 in 1812 and only 2 in 1821....by the 1960's, the annual salmon catch of England and Wales was a quarter of that a century earlier. He quotes an account of MP Robert Wallace about parliament blocking effective salmon protection laws at the behest of the commercial fishing industry, dam operators, etc.

He quotes accounts from the early 19th century including from Henry David Thoreau about the severe depletion of salmon stocks in Northeast U.S. rivers caused by the disruption of salmon spawning beds by the transportion of boats and logs down the river, dams, factory poisons and so on.

Salmon stocks continued to decline to near extinction in Eastern U.S. waters. The Danish government agreed to ban its fisherman from engaging in their highly destructive open ocean fishing off the coast of Greenland, where salmon from Britain, the U.S, and Canada often converge for their sojourns in the Ocean, in 1972. However Danes continued to fish heavily near the Greenland shore, and used vessels under other nation's flags to circumvent their salmon catch quota under the 1972 agreement.

Montgomery shows how salmon have been sacrificed since the Great Depression in favor ofthe dams which have provided water and electricity in the Eastern Pacific Northwest from the Snake and Colombia Rivers. In 1937, U.S. fisheries commissioner Franklin Belllet it be known that he wasn't going to strain himself too much on behalf of the Salmon. "Aside from blind restriction" of commercial fishing, he explained, "the protection of individual runs menaced by virtual extinction must be left to chance."

Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest thrived on salmon for subsistence, and to preserve the run, would commonly allow half of the run to pass through its nets. But with the coming of commercial fishing dominated by whites, Indian livelihood was wiped out. They could not compete in commercial fishing, lacking the wealth to purchase the sophisticated boats and nets increasingly becoming common. Indians became a racist scapegoat for the depletion of salmon stocks. He notes He notes though that state records that the entire Indian fishing catch from 1935 to 1950 was less than the total commercial catch during a typical year.

Washington State had always claimed that on traditional Indian fishing grounds based on treaties made regarding Colombian basin rivers in the 1850's, Indians merely had the same rights as whites to exploit salmon. But in 1970, federal district court judge George Boldt ruled that the treaties actually reserved for Indians half of the annual salmon supply. In 1975, the Supreme Court upheld Boldt's decision. In 1980, Federal Judge William Orrick declared that under the old treaties, maintaining decent habitat for salmon spawning fell to Washington state. Shortly thereafter a three-judge panel of the 9th circuit overturned the decision. The issue of maintaining the habitat has not been resolved. He points out that native Americans have not been given "special rights" in fishing, as white fisherman and the demagogues inflaming them have claimed but the treaties, signed as they were under pressure, were grants by the Indians to the White man on the Indian's land. Not grants by the white man to the Indian.

, Hatcheries were promoted as the catchall solution to salmon shortages. Huge investments were made in this new technology by Washington and Oregon governments beginning the late 19th century. However, writes Montgomery, in the long term, hatcheries have clearly failed. Salmon cannot simply adapt to any stream or river. They seem genetically programmed to operate in limited regions. Hatcheries salmon are selected from a very limited gene pool i.e.lack of genetic diversity and can produce defective offspring with their wild brethren. The hatchery salmon are found to be much more aggressive than their wild counterparts in eating up the food supply, thus making the wild ones lose out in the survival of the fittest. In particular hatchery fish, can introduce deadly diseases to their wild brethren. In the mid-70's a parasite from hatchery fish wiped out restored wild salmon stocks in Norwegian rivers.
By the early 1990's, while the Colombia river held an estimated 11 to 16 million salmon before the arrival of Europeans, by then it had dwindled to around 2 million wild fish. Yet the number of hatchery fish in the river was estimated at the time to be around a hundred million.

Likewise, on the East coast, salmon produced in "farms" i.e. maintained in cages at sea, sometimes accounted for the majority of spawning salmon in a river. An estimate of the National Research Council declares that 180,000 fish a year escape from their farms in Maine. They spread disease to wild salmon and mate with them, creating large numbers of genetically limited salmon. According to Montgomery, those 180,000 fish are ten times the number of wild salmon left in New England. In Europe, he notes, the amount of farm salmon being produced was 100 times the catch of wild salmon.

He advocates strictly enforced moratoriums on fishing, increased preservations of wetlands to allow for the creation of flood produced salmon-friendly side-channels, strictly enforced regulations on placing passageways for salmon in dams, regulations to prevent salmon waterways from being polluted and to make sure that salmon do not end up as carcasses on farmland after being swallowed through irrigation pumps. The economic actors involved continue to block serious efforts to protect the salmon as they always have. He notes how the Bush administration has blocked efforts to address over-fishing.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to Save Salmon - Lessons from History
Montgomery's book is centered on the notion that we are failing to learn from history when it comes to the Pacific salmon crisis. In England, eastern North America, and now the Pacific Northwest, human actions that inevitably destroy the "king of fish" have been repeated.Overfishing, blocking salmon from their spawning habitat, and causing the deterioration of habitat quality through pollution, land clearing, and simplification of the river are the culprits.Montgomery also tells why hatcheries are not the solution and never have been.He closes with a clear and, to me, indisputable analysis of what we must do to preserve and recover this most amazing of creatures. The book is quite accessible to a layperson; you don't need a scientific background, or even any knowledge of the problems facing Pacific salmon, in order to enjoy and learn from the book. ... Book Description

Here is an unflinching look at the terrifying phenomenon of shark attacks from the author of The Shark Almanac.

The shark is so well adapted to its element that its existence on the planet actually predates trees. When people enter that element in increasing numbers, as they have in recent years, the results can be tragic and seemingly arbitrary.

Author Tom Allen has carefully researched all known shark incidents from all over the world. The result is the most thorough and informative book to date on the phenomenon. SHARK ATTACKS contains the harrowing personal stories of shark attack survivors, expert opinions from marine biologists, and the latest scientific studies of shark behavior. Allen’s fascinating analysis explains;

* Why so many attacks occur in water less than five feet deep * Which species are killers * What triggers an attack * Behavior just before an attack * Whether shark nets increase swimmer safety levels * Environmental and seasonal conditions that contribute to an increase in attacks * Why it is better to be below a shark than above it.

This is a book for everyone who wants to read about the frightening reality of shark attacks--and to understand the myths that surround this often misunderstood creature. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Perfectly titled; incorrectly sub-titled.
The title of this book is accurate; it's subtitle is not. Literally 80% of the pages in this book are near-clinical descriptions of shark attack cases around the world, separated into chapters by geography. While it's mentioned in various spots before then, the last 15 pages finally truly discuss "their causes and avoidance."

This book is not without merit. First, the descriptions and circumstances of each of the attacks avoid hype and hysteria and might be entertaining if you happen to be the type that likes to watch the scene of a car wreck. Second, it theorizes that the 'test bite' hypothesis may be incorrect, as great whites and other sharks return for a second (and more) bite.

If you'd like to hear about various reigional shark attack histories and stories about people getting getting their limbs torn off, it's all here. On the other hand, if are looking for an in-depth scientific discussion on shark biology, attack behavior, and attack prevention beyond what you can find already published on most websites, there are better books out there.

The author has provided the reader with comprehensive coverage of ship hydrodynamics with a focus on numerical methods now in use. The book provides a global overview of experimental and numerical methods for ship resistance and propulsion, manoeuvring and seakeeping. As boundary element techniques are now in standard use, these are covered in sufficient detail for independent code development.

The book is divided into seven chapters. Chapter one contains an overview of problems and approaches, including the basics of model and full scale testing. An introduction to computational fluid dynamics is given, including a discussion of applications. The next four chapters cover the subjects: propellers, resistance and propulsion, seakeeping and manoeuvring. These chapters present basic methods, such as model testing, extrapolation to full scale, and procedures for design. Substantial parts of each chapter include numerical methods and their applications. The last two chapters are devoted to boundary element methods for resistance and seakeeping.

4-0 out of 5 stars How to shrink fluid dynamics!!
This book tells you almost everything you need to know about ship hydrodynamics, but you can't really shrink this argument into 300 pages!!
The book is mainly descriptive, if you're looking for an insight in the mathematical (painful) aspect of fluid dynamics, this book is not for you.
Anyway, there are few codes, written by the author, you can download.
Mainly the boolk talks about the flow about a ship, the ship manouvering and the propeller. Per each argument the main problems are addressed. At the end of the book there is a part dedicated to the developing of a panel code.
Good book, maybe overpriced.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Ship Hydrodynamics
This book summarize all what is needed to understand the basics of ship hydrodynamics. This a good support for teaching up to PhD level. I should have liked to write this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine stuff
This book is what I would have liked to have earlier for my
lectures. In spite of being comprehensive, it gives not only
a good overview about the physics and current computational
methods of the various fields of ship-related hydrodynamics,
but contains also a host of valuable ideas which are not well
known, and it concentrates on the important aspects within
each field. Many exercises show how to apply the facts and
methods to practical problems.

A difficulty relates to viscous flow computations: Here specific
methods for naval architecture are hardly required; thus this
field is handled superficially only. For all other topics I
know of no other book of comparable quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modern ship hydrodynamics...
Quite often, in the field of ship design "practical" means oversimplification of the problem, bounding ship design to asort of empirical art. This is not the case! This book, lively written with a nice balance between the description of the relevant physics and the rigorous mathematical foundation of the problems, leads the reader to approach ship design by sophisticated, though still feasible, methods. I think is a wonderful teaching tool!

PhD students will find a large number of useful references.

Finally, not of minor importance, it can be used by well trained naval architects to get quickly a basic understanding of modern CFD tools, their importance and limits.

Book Description

The Atlantic salmon is the king of game fish. Sleek and silvery, an astonishing leaper, paradoxical in his habits and behavior and electrifying when hooked, Salmo salar is the ultimate angling quarry. And now, at last, we have a thoroughly revised and updated version of the classic 1958 book on this great game fish by one of the world's leading anglers. It is graced by scores of new photographs, drawings by the author, and several important new chapters. Lee Wulff provides expert advice on all phases of this great sport - tackle, casting, presentation of both wet and dry flies, fly selection, wading, where fish lie and how to make them strike, and how best to land salmon. (Much of what Wulff says is applicable to all forms of fly fishing.) There are shrewd and telling observations on the biology and ecology of the salmon, and strong, measured advice on how salmon fishing can be protected and improved, so that thousands of new anglers can share the pleasures of this exciting brand of fishing. Throughout the book, there is a wealth of fascinating stories from the author's fifty years of salmon fishing throughout the world - and at the end, a stirring new account of Wulff's pioneering flights, in the thirties, in a single-engine plane, in search of salmon. Not merely for those who have fished for salmon but for the legions of fly fishermen who dream of doing so and who may eventually realize their dreams, The Atlantic Salmon is a rich, classic book not to be missed. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The book all aquatic chemists should keep on reading
Stumm and Morgan remains the best aquatic chemical book ever written.

It is fundamental in its approach to the processes that control the composition of natural waters, it is a pleasure to read and should be a must for any student and/or professional in the field.

After more than 20 years working in the field I still find it useful and up to date in many respects.

A pitty that there is no Spanish version of it, thousands of Spanish speaking chemists and geochemists are missing a classic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Reference Yes, Teaching Text, No
This book is an excellent reference text for people who already know something about aquatic chemistry. It contains more material and covers more topics than any other book in the field. As a teaching text, however, it is severely lacking.

The first problem is the often convoluted writing, which lapses at times into incomprehensibility; read this book for 5 minutes and you will find at least one confusing sentence or circular explanation. The second problem is the lack of clarity about how to actually solve equlibrium problems: there are lots of examples of tableaus used to solve problems, but the explanation of how the tableau is constructed is not good, and neither is the description of how to obtain the proton condition or what it is (and it is crucial to understand this). Finally, many so-called "examples" do very little to help clarify things. Readers who find the tableau method confusing as introduced by Stumm and Morgan will find themselves consulting the aquatic chemistry text by Morel (or the later edition by Hering and Morel) to learn how to actually use the method. When they do, they will probably find that text highly preferable: clearly written, with all the examples worked out from start to finish.

These problems really make learning from this text a monumental struggle for students not already versed in the subject. However, as previously noted, as a reference for professionals, it is unequaled.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book for chem. & physics of nat. systems
This book is an excellent reference. It presents a thorough discussion of a complex topic. The authors provide many worked examples, with all required numeric inputs and resutls, that permit the reader to quickly verify his or her understanding of the material. The consistent and proper use of units throughout the book is refreshing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference
The book is entitled American Cichlids I - Dwarf Cichlids. You won't find any African cichlids here, but you will find an in-depth useable reference for Apistos, the various dwarf acaras and checkerboard cichlids, etc. Much easier to read than the Mayland & Bork book, although that one is slightly newer and covers more Apistos, more in depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference book for dwarf cicilid lovers
This is a book to own. It has many dwarf species info. from South America. And it gives very useful care and breeding guide for people who want to take care of these fishes. Beautiful pics and printing are very readable. Try to get one !!

3-0 out of 5 stars Very thorough book, on American Cichlids only.
This is a beautifully illustrated book with great information, if you are interested in American cichlids only. It is clearly stated on the front cover and spine that this book covers American Cichlids, but that fact is not mentioned anywhere in Amazons info. The book is worthless for what I wanted. ... Book Description

In Darwin's Fishes, Daniel Pauly presents a unique encyclopedia of ichthyology, ecology, and evolution, based upon everything that Charles Darwin ever wrote about fish. Entries are arranged alphabetically and can be about, for example, a particular fish taxon, an anatomical part, a chemical substance, a scientist, a place, or an evolutionary or ecological concept. The reader can start wherever they like and are then led by a series of cross-references on a fascinating voyage of interconnected entries, each indirectly or directly connected with original writings from Darwin himself. Along the way, the reader is offered interpretation of the historical material put in the context of both Darwin's time and that of contemporary biology and ecology. This book is intended for anyone interested in fishes, the work of Charles Darwin, evolutionary biology and ecology, and natural history in general. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Don't waste your time or money on this book, there are much better books out there. I actually did purchase this book before going snorkelling or diving in Hawai'i and found that not nearly all the fish I saw were in here. If you want something that covers all Hawaiian fish pick up: Hawaii's Fishes : A Guide for Snorkelers, Divers, and Aquarists (Hoover). This book, Hawaiian Reef Fish: The Identification Book, often lacked species and had many fish incorrectly named. The pictures and ease of use are the best aspects of this book, but they don't make it worth it. ... Read more
