Parents may have read or heard of Mark Kurlansky's runaway bestsellerCod: A Biography of the Fish ThatChanged the World. It's an improbably fascinating story, and here,Kurlansky has teamed up with superb illustrator S.D. Schindler to tell it allover again, this time for kids. The life history of the cod--driven by itsinsatiable hunger--is interwoven with the insatiable hunger of people, from theVikings onwards. The illustrations are both informative (a cross-section of theContinental Shelf, a map of the Atlantic) and humorous (comical New Englandersdancing for joy at the invention of frozen fish fingers). Along the way, thereader accidentally learns a great deal about the Vikings, the Basques, theAmerican Revolution, the slave trade--and the current danger, once thoughtimpossible, that the cod will be fished to extinction. Too chewy for childrenunder about 5 or 6, this is an excellent bellyful of high-protein nonfiction forall children and even their parents. (Ages 6 to 12) --Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fish that Changed the World.....
It's hard to believe that anyone could write an interesting and informative book detailing the life and history of the cod fish, or more to the point, that it could hold your interest, but that's exactly what Mark Kurlansky has done. His fascinating and engaging narrative, based on his adult book, Cod: A Biography Of The Fish That Changed The World, explores this once plentiful fish's place in history, from the Vikings, Basques, and European explorers, to Colonial America, the slave trade, American Revolution, and the technological inventions of the twentieth century that changed fishing and processing forever. Written in an easy to read, conversational style, Mr Kurlansky's intriguing story is part biology, part history, part sociology, and is chock full of interesting fun facts, trivia, humorous anecdotes, maps, recipes, and a marvelous time line that runs through the entire book and puts all this information in perspective. S.D. Schindler's bright, bold, and charming artwork is clever and entertaining, and kids will enjoy poring over the busy illustrations, and finding all the wonderful, special details. Perfect for youngsters 8 and older, The Cod's Tale takes you on a whirlwind adventure, and a very unique thousand year journey with a most unromantic, though endearing fish. This is non-fiction for kids at its very best, and a book that definitely shouldn't be missed. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars For those who keep fish as pets
The fish hobby is made up of two different types of people. Some hobbyists do not really bother to understand their fish, they simply buy replacements when the current ones die. The second type of fish-keeper wants to know as much information as he or she can on the types of fishes they keep. This book would be of most value to the second type.

Sometimes, we mistakenly assume that fish are fragile and that there is simply no way to maintain them at optimum health. But that is not the case. Most fish are quite hardy. They can easily be maintained in the home aquarium if attention is given to their particular needs. Even so, from time to time, our fishes do get sick despite of our care. This book will help you diagnose some of the more common diseases that afflict fishes, as well as some possible remedies.

Some of the procedures in the textbook are simply not feasible for the average aquarists. Most of us do not have access to a laboratory. However, there is enough solutions in the book that are easy enough to follow. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars All aspects of health care for all types of fishes
Dr. Chris Andrews, et.al.'s Manual Of Fish Health is a basic guide to providing a healthy aquarium environment and should be a part of any fish owner's home collection. It covers all aspects of health care for all types of fishes, both freshwater and marine, and cover pond as well as aquarium environments. Add plenty of charts and color photos and you have a truly comprehensive reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all fish keepers
I have dozens of books on fish and this is one I can't live without. It's an encyclopedia of fish illnesses and treatments that includes wonderful illustrations and photos. It's simple to understand and yet useful for us advanced aquarists. I answer hundreds of e-mails from my web site every year about fish illness and often refer people to this book. It's interesting enough that sometimes I look it over again!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent diagnosis
One of my gouramis fell ill and a day later pop-eye set in. After trying to diagnose the illness(es) through various fish-related web sites- with no luck- I dosed with both gram-negative and gram-positive antibiotics. Two days later the gourami died, and the other was getting worse. Then, I got this book. In less than a minute I was able to diagnose the remaining sick gourami. In fact, page 162 has a picture of him! Very cool. Now I know what to do to save him (and protect the other fish, too).

This book has excellent discussions on all the important things: water pH, hardness, temperature, the biological filtration cycle, and more. Plus, the photos are real-life, not stupid inaccurate line drawings. I just wish I had bought it two years ago when I started the hobby. It would've saved me a lot of money, both in fish and equipment! The book at first seems pricey, but considering the amount of money you'll save with the information in it, it's cheap! I suggest getting it- and reading it- before buying any fish. But if you already have fish, it's a god-send.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must have book for the fish keeper!
This was one of the first books I bought when I started keeping fish and 12 years later it's still a wonderful book. This book takes you through how to keep your fish healthy, but more importantly it helps you through the inevitable times when you have sick fish.

With a chapter on recognizing your sick fish, to a chapter on the most common diseases and parasites this book will help you figure out what's wrong with your fish.

Finally there is a chapter on how to treat each type of illness so you don't have to guess on what to do.

This is definitely a book that every fish keeper should have. ... Read more

Book Description

A week-by-week practical guide to setting up and maintaining a superb living environment

As fishkeeping continues to grow in popularity, hobbyists are looking for authoritative advice and more sophisticated results.

Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week-by-Week is an encyclopedic reference that takes a fresh look at setting up and maintaining a tropical freshwater aquarium. New hobbyists are quite often impatient to set up their aquarium and want to add their expensive fish as soon as possible. This common misstep can have disastrous results that may discourage beginners from ever trying again.

To curb such enthusiastic impatience, this book presents clear step-by-step practical advice in a convenient week-by-week progression. The book uses detailed photographic sequences to follow each stage of setting up a warm water freshwater tropical aquarium in real-time over a period of ten weeks.

The set-up procedure starts with the first day, when the substrate and life-support systems are installed and progresses to the point at which the first fish are added - two weeks later. The book then follows the aquarium's development during the next eight weeks as the tank turns from an artificial environment into a living eco-system.

Alongside the main aquarium set-up sequence are photographs that show how to create two different aquascape designs based on a cube and a bow-front tank.

Profile sections show fifty aquarium plants and one hundred popular warm water freshwater aquarium fish at relevant stages of the set-up process. Throughout, the book explains the natural processes that occur so that fishkeepers can ensure ongoing success.

Combining clear text and simple-to-follow illustrations, Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week-by-Week is a crucial reference for tropical freshwater fish hobbyists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read.
This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist.Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect.I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Beginners Guide
Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.

Book Description

This is a love story; an unlikely convergence of two people from different worlds who were able to make a rich and tender life together, and not only endure each other's company in alarmingly close quarters but revel in it. Edith Iglauer was born in Cleveland and lived an urban, sophisticated life in New York until she met and married John Daly, a commercial fisherman in British Columbia. She spent more than four years on his forty-one-foot troller, the Morekelp until his sudden death.John Daly was an impassioned and greatly talented fisherman who was convinced that he could "think like a fish"; an amateur philosopher who worked out, and followed, an orginal set of beliefs and principles; a mystic who, after forty years of fishing, felt himself to be at one with the sea and the mountains along the British Columbia coast; a scholarly looking, high-spirited, full-blown eccentric who covered the white walls of his pilothouse with his favorite quotations in bold black letters ("Lawyers spend their professional careers shoveling smoke. O.W. Holmes")Fishing With John established Edith Iglauer as one of BC's most popular writers. This unusual West Coast love story sold 16,000 copies in hardcover and continues to be a bestseller in paperback. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ!
Thanks Edith for one of the best books I've ever read! I've borrowed Fishing With John at least a dozen times from the public library-in the mean time tried to find it in used book stores, flea markets, and garage sales for a couple of years! Finally got lucky in a book store in Vancouver B.C. A public park in Pender Harbour B.C. is named in honour of John Daly-which says it all! You have to read it folks!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Glimpse into a Well-Charted Course
"...it was fishing with John that I loved so much." "and he appeared to remain blissfully content to have me there and trying."

What Edith Iglauer doesn't describe is as important to the texture of this book as her detailed accounts of trolling for salmon with John Daly along the coast of British Columbia. The only intimacies she reveals are the everyday tasks required to keep a commercial fishing boat afloat, John's exuberance in the life, home and friends he has made; and his many choices. The restraint Iglauer exercises in chronicling her four years fishing with John invites the reader to consider the centrality of character in any voyage one may take.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fishing With John
Wonderful story! John Daly was my husband's uncle, and we used to go to Garden Bay, BC to visit him. We have wonderful memories of John and miss seeing him, even tho' it's been probably 20 years since John died. I'm sorry I never met Edith, altho' my husband Lionel and his aunt Leslie Joslin met her when she gave a reading from the book in Seattle in 1988 or 1989. Now made-for-TV movie on Lifetime Channel, they changed the name to "Navigating the Heart" with Jacqueline Smith and Tim Matheson. Watch if you get the chance (TV characters much younger than actual story, tho'). Would LOVE to get copy of movie to keep with the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to read.
This book is a very relaxing account of a life long fisherman. As you read it, you will find yourself infinitely hungry for a fat bagel with fresh lox.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful story about a British Columbia fisherman's life.
This is a wonderful non-fiction book about the life of a British Columbia fisherman written from the point of view of his wife & assistant, Edith Iglauer. Its not a "how I caught the big one" story, but instead a story of a fisherman's daily life, his relationships, and the enjoyment he gets from his work in the great outdoors. Edith Iglauer's writing style is much like the beautiful scenery and natural lifestyle she describes - a pleasure to read ... Read more

In this history of the river and its anglers, acclaimed outdoor writer Jim McLennan traces the ancient, glacial origins of the river and follows it to the modern day, where the chance combination of natural and man-made elements has transformed the Bow into an exceptional fishery. From there he examines the impact of continued human activity on the river and offers guidance on how to preserve the only première trout stream in North America to flow through a major city. Along the way, he offers a veteran’s advice on tackle, technique and flies for successful angling. ... Read more

Book Description

Fisheries management today is highly contentious. The interests of fishers and fish processors, coastal communities, the government, and environmental organizations are often different and can even be mutually incompatible.

Fishing Grounds offers a comprehensive assessment of the legal, social, economic and biological context of marine fisheries management in the United States. Drawing on interviews with stakeholders from all sides of the issue, the authors seek common ground - and points of unresolved controversy - among the diversity of interests and viewpoints involved. Chapters examine:

  • history and background
  • status of marine fisheries
  • fishery productivity from biological, social, and economic perspectives
  • ownership of fishery resources
  • management structures and incentives
  • the roles of science and evaluation
Each chapter begins with legal, technical, and conceptual background to help readers understand the sets of issues involved and follows that with a balanced presentation of stakeholder views.

Fishing Grounds presents a useful overview of fisheries management options and positions regarding those options, providing valuable insight into the opinions and concerns of stakeholders and the sets of incentives to which those stakeholders respond. It is an important work for fisheries management professionals in industry, government agencies, and nongovernmental organizations, as well as for students and researchers involved with fisheries and fisheries management. ... Book Description

A significant number of the world's ocean fisheries are depleted, and some have collapsed, from overfishing. Although many of the same fishermen who are causing these declines stand to suffer the most from them, they continue to overfish. Why is this happening? What can be done to solve the problem.

The authors of Fish, Markets, and Fishermen argue that the reasons are primarily economic, and that overfishing is an inevitable consequence of the current sets of incentives facing ocean fishermen. This volume illuminates these incentives as they operate both in the aggregate and at the level of day-to-day decision-making by vessel skippers. The authors provide a primer on fish population biology and the economics of fisheries under various access regimes, and use that information in analyzing policies for managing fisheries. The book:

  • provides a concise statistical overview of the world's fisheries
  • documents the decline of fisheries worldwide
  • gives the reader a clear understanding of the economics and population biology of fish
  • examines the management issues associated with regulating fisheries
  • offers case studies of fisheries under different management regimes
  • examines and compares the consequences of various regimes and considers the implications for policy making

The decline of the world's ocean fisheries is of enormous worldwide significance, from both economic and environmental perspectives. This book clearly explains for the nonspecialist the complicated problem of overfishing. It represents a basic resource for fishery managers and others-fishers, policymakers, conservationists, the fish consuming public, students, and researchers-concerned with the dynamics of fisheries and their sustenance. ... Though journalists and other outsiders have often written about theperils and rewards of taking to the sea for a living, this is "the firstcollection written by fishermen themselves," a distinction that provessubstantial after reading Out on the Deep Blue. These first-hand accountsby men and women involved in the world's most dangerous occupation are grippingnot only because of their authenticity, but because these people represent aslim minority who willingly engage in a daily battle against nature at a timewhen "85 percent of Americans live in urban or suburban areas," far from anykind of true wilderness. These are gripping stories of quick riches and evenquicker death, of fishing seasons that last less than a day, and of jobs thatinvolve hours of tedium interrupted by bouts of frenetic effort. Set in thefrigid and unforgiving waters of remote places such as the Bering Sea and theNorth Atlantic, these 19 chapters vividly describe the realities and motivationsof those pursuing swordfish, herring, salmon, crab, urchins, and other creaturesof the deep. They also deal with the realities of dwindling resources, andsubsequent jobs, and the bitterness and loss of purpose that often results forthose whose sense of self is intrinsically tied to their occupation. This is the book -I- keep on the nightstand. Covers a broad base of contemporary population dynamics with relevant examples. Disregarding the insipid cover design, its an essential addition to any biologist's library

5-0 out of 5 stars An everyday reference for fishery managers and modelers.
This one is a keeper! A comprehensive masterpiece of the world of dynamic fish populaton modeling. Excellent examples using a multitude of fish species makes this book a must for anyone involved in fishery research or management into the new millenium. I give the books content 5 stars although I, also, would like to see the release of a new book jacket.
