Book Description

Recent instances of bioinvasion, such as the emergence of the zebra mussel in the American Great Lakes, generated a demand among marine biologists and ecologists for groundbreaking new references that detail how organisms colonize hard substrates, and how to prevent damaging biomass concentrations.Marine Biofouling: Colonization Processes and Defenses is the English language version of a comprehensive work by eminent Russian scientist Alexander I. Railkin, who details the causes of vast biomass concentrations on submerged hard substrates. He also delivers a quantitative description of colonization processes and provides detailed models for preventing biofouling. This volume expounds on many topics rarely discussed in the frame of one book: types of hard substrate communities; comparison of hard and soft substrate communities; harm caused by micro- and macrofoulers; larval taxes and drift; mechanisms of settlement and attachment of microorganisms, invertebrates, ascidians and macroalgae; the impact of currents; protection from epibionts; industrial biofouling protection; successions on hard substrates; and the recovery of disturbed communities or the self-assembly of communities. The text includes much Russian-language research translated for the first time. Through a thorough examination of substrate organisms and an exploration of preventive methods, this monograph prepares those concerned with marine biology to help protect the self-purifying organisms that keep marine ecosystems healthy and productive. ... Book Description

With regional, national, and global processes affecting both the structure and function of lakes and rivers, assessment methodology must encompass many attributes to evaluate the impact of these processes on water quality. Many of the changes in biological communities correlate to resource exploitation, nonpoint pollutant interactions, and habitat alteration - factors that can be missed by routine chemical sampling. This creates the need for ecologically-based approaches to this problem.Biological monitoring is a fundamental part of an ecologically-based approach. Biological Monitoring of Aquatic Systems brings together contributions by authors recognized as leaders in the development and utilization of biological monitoring techniques for freshwater ecosystems. It provides a conceptual framework for the use of biological monitoring to assess the environmental health of freshwater resources. Biological monitoring is an important part of any water quality assessment program. Biological Monitoring of Aquatic Systems provides you with an understanding of water resources. It includes discussions concerning historical development, ecological basis, experimental design characteristics, case studies, and future concerns. As efforts to maintain and restore the world's water resources intensify, the need to develop accurate methods to assess the health of these resources becomes critical. ... Read more

Book Description

The evolution of observational instruments, simulation techniques, and computing power has given aquatic scientists a new understanding of biological and physical processes that span temporal and spatial scales. This has created a need for a single volume that addresses concepts of scale in a manner that builds bridges between experimentalists and theoreticians in aquatic ecology. Handbook of Scaling Methods in Aquatic Ecology: Measurement, Analysis, Simulation is the first comprehensive compilation of modern scaling methods used in marine and freshwater ecological research. Written by leading researchers, it presents a systematic approach to dealing with space and time in aquatic ecology. This is a compendium that analyzes themes related to the response or behavior of organisms to processes occurring over multiple spatial and temporal scales. This book covers: novel techniques for data collection, focusing on processes over a broad range of scales (from bacteria to ocean basins); newly-developed concepts and data analysis algorithms; and innovative computer models and simulations to mimic complex biological processes. The Handbook serves as a reference volume for investigators seeking insight into new experimental approaches and data analysis, as well as the sensor design required for optimal sampling. Many of the algorithms and models provided are directly applicable to your experimental data. This comprehensive treatment of scaling methods and applications can help foster a unified understanding of subject matter among the modeling, experimental, and field research communities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the world of the fisherman
As one with little experience with, but a fair amount of interest in, the sea and its denizens I found this book an engaging and enlightening introduction to the sea and the world of the fisherman, both commercial and recreational. The author hits the salient high points of many aspects of fishing: economic, biologic, philosophic and historic. I read the book while vacationing on Block Island, the scene of much of the book's action, which added to the flavor of the book. I encourage you to partake of both the book and the island.

5-0 out of 5 stars A handy intro for the uninitiated landsman
I purchased this book on the strength of a recommendation from a review in the Block Island, R.I. local paper (much of the book involves settings in the Block Island locale). As one with minimal experience with fishing and the sea, but a modest interest in both, I found the book provides a well-paced intro to all aspects of the world of the fisherman, both commercial and recreational. The author leavens the book with a number of human-interest stories, and his limited excursions into non-fishing matters (politics for example) are stimulating. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars chemical oceanography
first i think that this one is avery good book, i review in master sciences in unam mexico, is agreat helpfull, but sometimes is confuse, have some text that are not so ease to understand, your book is one of the mas important in the chemical oceanography, and have to be more easy to learn, the first time that i read this book (the first edition) was in the basic sciences, and was very dificult to my undestand this new knowledge, but anyway i guiyou thakns for this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable synthesis on marine chemistry: worth buying
This book contains a wealth of state-of-the art reference data, e.g. thermodynamic constants and other physico-chemical properties, which would otherwise be difficult to find together. It is therefore very useful as a source of data for quantitative calculations related to the chemistry of seawater.

PLUS: - detailed numbers - ion-pair and Pitzer models applied to seawater (explained with worked examples) - data on carbonate equilibria in seawater - chapter on circulation pattern - chapter on pH measurement of seawater

MINUS: - text style sometimes not concise - numbers frequently given without references - poor illustration quality ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book
Dr. Larry Nesper's 13-year journey with the Lac du Flambeau Indians becomes a thoroughly enjoyable and scholarly example of modern ethnographic work. The book meticulously details all of the issues relevant to Ojibwe spear-fishing and treaty rights as 1) native tradition, 2) cultural conflict (conflict both within the native culture, and between the native population and the State of Wisconsin), 3) inter-cultural legal conflict and controversy, and 4) an example for current dialogues regarding ethnicity and ethnic conflict, ethnic prejudice, and racism. Nesper clearly outlines all pertinent issues of the 25-year "Walleye War" from every angle, and conscientiously works his way through them, all the while carefully explaining different cultural perspectives. Even though Nesper states that he has become friends with many of the native people about whom he writes, he does not let his own feelings of friendship taint the truth. I recommend the book for enthusiasts of native culture, academics (especially those teaching cultural anthropology), and anyone interested in the history of, and current issues regarding, treaty rights and the relationship between native cultures and state or federal government entities. ... I savored every page of this wonderful book. It is the perfect book for anyone who lives in or has visited Maine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down the Shore
I just LOVED this book! The photographer captured the actual life of a Maine coast fisherman and the work is just brilliant.
If you never knew anything about fishing, you would have learned alot of information about the industry from the writer plus some very interesting and amusing tales. And the point of the book is to call some appreciation to the men and women who brave the elements to bring food to our tables....a great cause and so beautifully portrayed. I would highly recommend everyone see this book! ... Read more

Book Description

This work documents the rise and fall of Pacific American Fisheries, a salmon packing company based in Bellingham, Washington, which also had a substantial presence in Alaska. It covers the company's history from its beginnings when Roland Onffroy arrived in early 1898 and saw an opportunity to start a business and make a mint using the abundant supply of salmon in nearby Puget Sound, up until its closing in 1966. The company's story is presented chronologically as unfolding local, regional, national, and international events impacted the fortunes of the company, its employees, and the town that housed it. It also takes a close look at the entrepreneurs, developers, businessmen, and Asian labor force that were associated with the company. PAF's history can also be read as the story of how the United States was developed as people moved from the Atlantic to Pacific coasts and how the Pacific coast was targeted for development due to its natural resources that could easily be exploited for profit. ...
