Book Description

With the depletion of wild fish stocks by factors such asoverfishing, habitat degradation, pollution, and red tides, thepressures and incentives for commercial farming of marine food andaquarium fish have increased dramatically. Concurrent with that trendhas been an increase in the experimental use of live marine fish invarious basic and applied sciences, for example, in developmental, ecological, and toxicological research. Marine Fish Culture is the first comprehensive reference andtextbook on this subject and provides information on more than 870species in 129 families. The book is the product of the author's 27years of research and teaching in fish culture and biology.Approximately 12,000 references through June 1998 were screened inwriting this work, and more than 4,000 are included in the text. Marine Fish Culture covers all the major topics necessary forraising marine fish, including overviews of commercial productionstatistics, water sources, water treatment, rearing units, energetics, health, and handling; detailed reviews of fish characteristicsrelative to rearing, the rearing environment, reproduction, nutritionof larvae, and nutrition of juveniles and adults; and reviews ofcurrent rearing knowledge for food, bait, and ornamental marine fish,by family. ... Book Description

Phosphate and nitrogen compounds control growth of vegetationin most, if not all, fresh, brackish or salt waters. This book dealswith the processes constituting the cycles of the phosphate andnitrogen compounds in sediment and the phosphate equilibria betweenthe sediment and the overlying water. Sediment, to a large extent, controls the P- and N concentrations and thus primary production. Inmost waters, too high concentrations of these compounds causeexcessive growth of algae, causing so-called eutrophication. Abatementof this can only be achieved after a complete understanding of thequantitative role of sediment in the P- and N cycle. Thus, for the phosphate cycle the following processes are evaluated: P-binding onto sediments, viz., onto ironhydroxide and calcium carbonate (limestone), Fractionation ofphosphate in relation to its bioavailability, Release processesunder anoxic and oxic conditions, and their dependence on pH changes,Further items taken into account, including the influence ofdrying of sediment and its resuspension by wind. For the nitrogen cycle, the following are discussed: Ammonification of organically bound nitrogen,Nitrification and denitrification, including DissimilatoryNitrate Reduction, Links with other chemical elements are made.Audience: This book will be of interest to students of limnologyat graduate or Ph.D. levels, environmental engineers, biologists andchemists appointed to include sediment in their work or studies, andfor water managers dealing with water quality control. The book shouldbe seen as a complement to textbooks on limnology, in that it providesan in-depth treatment of the subject. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great science, questionable english
An excellent treatise on the subject matter, covering all aspects in significant detail. It is, however, let down by its use of english. Whilst this shortfall is never appaling it can detract from the flow of the prose and cause the reader to go over certain sentences again. I feel the book would have benefited from another round of editing. But despite all that (it is a science book and not an excersise in perfect English afterall) it is truely comprehensive in a relatively short tome and I would definately reccomend it ... Read more

Book Description

Millions of people are moving from rural areas to costal cities. Meeting the basic human needs for protein foods in the future will be a difficult challenge. Fishery products are the world's most important source of animal protein, which has led to a doubling of the demand for fish since the 1950s. As we can not expect to catch more food from the sea, we must turn to farming the waters, not just hunting them. The new challenge for planners now is to accelerate aquaculture development and to plan for new production, making urban areas of production, particularly recycled urban wastewater. This book includes papers from authors in the U.S., Europe, and Asia that review these developing issues from the perspective of both developed and developing countries. ... Read more

Book Description

Transport and Transformation of Contaminants Near the Sediment-Water Interface addresses the issue of contaminated bottom sediments and their potential adverse impacts on water quality. This state-of-the-science book covers regulatory management perspectives, physical processes, chemical and biological processes, and process synthesis/modeling. Specific topics discussed include EPA's Sediment Quality Criteria program from a regulatory perspective; flocculation, deposition, and resuspension of fine-grained sediments; approaches for measuring vertical sediment flux near the sediment-water interface; equilibrium models for metal speciation in natural sediments; the partitioning of organic chemicals in bottom sediments; and the development and application of models of sediment and associated contaminant transport in surface waters. The significance of recent studies suggesting that interaction of contaminated bottom sediments with the overlying water play an important role in the long-term recovery of aquatic systems makes Transport and Transformation of Contaminants Near the Sediment-Water Interface essential for water quality engineers, environmental chemists, and environmental toxicologists. The volume provides important information for consultants, regulators, researchers, and graduate students as well. ... Read more

Book Description

This is one-of-a-kind multidisciplinary research volume on the exploitation of natural resources held in common in a cold climate, focusing on economic, social, cultural, and institutional aspects of natural resource management. The book's data come from definitive scientific studies of northern Norway's two major regional industries, coastal fisheries and reindeer pastoralism, viewed as a study in exploitation of natural resources of interest far beyond Norway as a model system. Containing nineteen chapters in three main sections, the book integrates a solid understanding of the dynamics of natural resources with an equally solid understanding of the human exploitation of these resources. The first section covers sustainable resource use and management; the second is on ecological knowledge and implications for resource management; and the third covers the co-management approach to user involvement and decision making. The volume includes bibliographic references and an index. ... Read more
